Twitter: @Pokemon_Knights

You are Lilith, fourth daughter of Lord Erwin III, King of the Grand Forest.Your child hood was filled with tales of the brave Knights that rose up and fought of the evil that once ensnared your home so many years ago, and you have decided to run away from your noble upbringing to pursue your dream of being like them one day. With your faithful pet Charmander that you have raised since you were a little girl by your side, you feel anything is possible. You recently escaped a near by trading town, and are riding towards Emerald Lake on your way to Granite Castle. Let the journey continue.

Inventory:
>A steel rapier with your father's seal etched into the hilt.
>Leather armor, with his seal around the chest piece
>A small shield, with the old crest rusted over
>Dried meat and bread
>A small sum of gold
>4 bottles of Spirits
>A Girafarig mount
>>
>>34510046
The sun has risen high into the sky as you've ridden, the endless plains around you serving as the only scenery for quite some time. It seems that your father's soldiers have lost track of you, as the path behind you has been clear for miles. Alan seems to have dozed off behind you, which seems to have only steadied his position on the mount. Charmander is resting comfortably in front of you, as well. All in all, the peaceful atmosphere is a bit of a welcome break from the daring midnight escape and frantic fight for your life out of town.

You checked your map fairly recently, and from your best guess you're still a half day's ride away from Emerald Lake, and even then probably an hour or two from there to one of the surrounding villages. Meanwhile, you can feel Girafarig is beginning to feel the weight of its extra passengers, although its not displaying any outward signs of fatigue. You briefly consider finding a place to get off and rest, but realize that might make it impossible to reach your destination before nightfall.

>>34510417
You decide that a rest my be the best decision, especially given the Girafarig's ordeal this morning. Emerald Lake could wait. You ride for a few more minutes, before spotting a small grove of tress off the path a ways that would provide shade from the afternoon sun. Also, there might even be a water source for Girafarig to drink from. You nudge Alan awake and proceed off the beaten path.

The grove itself consists of several large trees surrounded by other vegetation that surround a murky, lily-pad covered pond. As you dismount, Alan promptly finds a large tree with sufficient shade and plops down next to it to continue napping. Charmander follows you with a curious glee, as you bring Girafarig to the pond's edge to drink. The pond itself seems to measure several dozen feet across, and the top is to congested to get a good read on how deep it is. You tie Girafarig up to a nearby tree to allow its longer head to graze, unsure if the smaller one even needs to eat. Charmander looks up to you in anticipation.

Your eyes fall to the orange lizard in front of you, and you kneel down to get at eye level with him. Your hand reaches up to rub his head lovingly. "I didn't say this earlier, but you really saved me back there. Thank you, Charmander."

"Char!" growled the lizard happily. You get back up to your feet, and look down at him with a broad smirk across your face. "Now, how about we take advantage of this downtime and do some training. We could both stand to get a little stronger?" "Char!"

"We need to figure out how to control that spell you discovered. If you could spew that magic on command, we could be unstoppable." Charmander beams proudly, and follows you faithfully away from the grove a few paces. You grab a stick off the ground, and plant it firmly upright in the grassy soil. On the top end, you plant a sizable chunk of grass and dirt to simulate a head. From there, you take Charmander back a distance equal to that of when you were back in town and focused him on the target.

"Okay, that's a lot smaller than a Doduo, but if you can hit that, you can hit anything. Give it your all, I'll be watching from the grove." Charmander calls his name loudly in response, excited at the prospect of impressing you. As you make your way back to the grove, you can already see it hyping itself up As you take a seat next to the possibly stilll sleeping Alan, you call back to the Pokemon. "Give it your best!"

Charmander instantly kicks into action, and begins barking, attempting to coax out the fire. A few barks later, and the same sparking flare ignites, however it goes neither as far or as wide as it did before. "Keep trying!"

Your words of encouragement are all the orange lizard to keep going, allowing you the time to turn to Alan. "Hey Alan, think you could try to teach me some magic?"

The seemingly sleeping Mage shifted slightly, before speaking up, his head not moving. "Depends on what you would want to learn?"

Since Lilith already asked, I'll just tell you. Mage is the only one that requires talent, everything else is just about learning.
>>

> "I want to be a Mage, like you."
or
> "You mentioned Channeling the other day..."

Depending on which one is most popular with others
>>
>>34511390
I'll just take the liberty of copy and pasting from the first thread:

"Magic is the energy that flows through all living things. Some beings are able to harness this energy and use it to do amazing things. Pokemon are naturally talented at this, however some humans have this gift as well. People with this gift are Mages, as we are able to harness the magical energies within ourselves, and you have to display a natural talent for it to learn it. There are numerous types of Mages, with each Mage being able to master only one or two types. However, for those not naturally gifted in Mage-dom, there are three other schools you can follow: Channeling, Faith, and Shamanism."

"Channeling is when a spiritually sensitive human allows a more powerful Pokemon to possess them, striking a bargain with the Pokemon to share their body for power. Faith is used by the religious circles, by calling on an artifact of a Legendary Pokemon, allowing them to siphon off some of its immense power to use for themselves. And finally Shamanism, is when a person takes the inherent magic found in Pokemon and turns them into Totems, that maintain some of the Pokemon's magical energies and can be utilized like that. There are also certain martial arts that display a magic-like power, but seems to be channeled solely from within their own body rather then the world around."
>>
>>34511490
Well then perhaps we should aim for mage first
>>
>>34511546
My thoughts also, I'd also rather stay away from Shamanism as it strikes me as a potentially cruel method and potentially less powerful
>>
>>34511390
Looking like:
>Mage 2
>Faith 1
>Shaman 1
>Channeling 1

I'll wait for a more definite answer.
>>
>>34511611
We do already have that Shaman totem, though. So it might be the easiest to get into.
>>
>>34511650
There were implications about negative repercussions with that totem and easiest oft means least reward. If we're going to lead our band of dragon knights, we gotta bring more than measly totems
>>
>>34511679
Here's the quote:

"I suppose, however Shaman magic normally works on a karmic scale. Like a coin, every good is an evil, every evil a good. Two sides. It seems odd that it would simply dissipate negative feelings in Pokemon without doing something else in return. I'd exercise caution using that in the future, if I were you."

"I want to be a Mage like you." The Novice Mage turns his head towards you, leaving you almost certain he was glaring at you from beneath his hood. "Not everyone can become a Mage, you need to have a talent for it." He takes a moment to pull a familiar book from within one of his sleeves, and gently hands it to you. "Pick a random page and read a few lines from it, if there's any magic in your blood it should react."

You take the book gingerly, and flick through a couple of pages, before a beautiful golden picture of a tree perks your attention. The language is foreign and unknown to you, and the letters are only barely recognizable, but it seems that shouldn't matter. You simply pick the first line you see and begin to read: "Mela... Namous... Proca-NAR-um... Carna... labolos."

And nothing happened. Alan gingerly takes his book back. "It seems you've no talent. I'd have an easier time teaching your Charmander a spell than forcing one upon you." You look dejected, but console yourself with it simply being a matter of born talent, and decide to risk another question. "Well, since being a Mage is out, how would I go about finding faith?"

Alan is silent for an oddly long time following your question, to the point that you worry he might have fallen asleep. Howver, just as you move to wake him he speaks. "Faith requires an artifact, but once you have that, all you need is strong devotion to whichever Legend it belongs to and its cause, and you can go as far as you like. Its really a personal journey, about finding what you want to stand for. Have you ever felt spiritual, or had something you believe in?"

"Ever since I was little I've always enjoyed standing on the battlements of the highest tower of the castle, feeling the rushing wind soaring through my hair. It's been my dream to fly unbounded through the skies and gaze onwards to the majesty of the heavens."

Alan stares in silence for a few seconds, clearly surprised by this new side he was seeing of you. However, he takes a moment to ponder before responding. "Sounds like Rayquaza would be a good fit for you. He's the Legend that guards the highest part of the skies, above even Ho-oh. He cares little for the affairs of man and Pokemon alike, and is the leader of the Weather Trio. He is said to be a very powerful ally, should his apathy not get in the way. Perhaps we can stop and look for a Weather Temple in the next City we visit, they might have an artifact to help you along.

You smile contentedly at your new discovery. You had heard the odd tale of the Weather Trio from your Tutors, however your father had always been partial to the Forest Spirit Celebi. However, that seemed to be one more thing to cast aside on your run from home. You turn your attention back to Charmander to see it still coughing out burst of energy, but the target still remains upright. He seems to be having trouble channeling whatever power he had done this morning. Training might need an intervention if any progress was going to be made.

Focus on Reliability in place of Distance/Power

You quickly realize that pushing Charmander further isn't going to accomplish much for the time being, and instead think it might be better to work on smaller, more reliable uses of its spell. You quickly run over to your Pokemon and give it a soft pat on the head. "Maybe we need to try this another way. How about we get closer, and you focused on just getting off a burst of magic every attempt?" The Fire-type looks a little discouraged, but chips in softly, won over by your enthusiasm. As you move closer to the target, you mention to Charmander. "Okay, just channel whatever you were feeling this morning, and let it go in short bursts?"

Charmander let off a burst loud growls, before its mouth being to spark blue again, then unleashing a short burst of blue energy. Then again, then again, then again, until finally the sparks faded from its face. The remains of the target laid splintered on the ground, let seemed to lack any sign of being burned. However, that mattered little, as the excited growling of Charmander was too loud to ignore, even prompting Alan to look up from the nap he may or may not have been taking. You could hardly contain your joy, as Charmander seemed to have reliably mastered a lesser version of the spell he had used this morning. However, your excitement was cut short by a shrill cry that even eclipsed Charmander's.

"Alan! Grab the gear! Charmander and I will go see!"

You burst into a full run in the direction of Girafarig's cries, with Charmander keeping pace right on your heels. You quickly make the turn around some trees to see the open expanse you left the pokemon tied near, only to see it right at the water's edge on its side, splashing about frantically. It looks like its leg was caught on a lillypad.

However, as you begin to rush over to untangle the Girafarig, you notice the lillypad tilt slight, revealing a savage pokemon underneath, pulling on the Normal-types back leg violently, drawing it towards the water, all why wearing a sadistic grin on its beaked face. You needed to act fast, but there was only so much you could do.

"Charmander! Attack!"

The orange lizard goes rushing forward, its mouth already giving off blues sparks, its eyes full of rage over its comrade being assaulted. You rush ahead of the tiny creature through the added bonus of your longer legs, and manage to make it Girafarig's side. You avoid the flailing pokemon just long enough to grab onto its hind leg and pull sharply, freeing it from its captor. Once free, Girafarig frantically scrambles to its feet, and runs as far away as its tether will let it.

However, your efforts have landed you sitting in the soft mud of the ponds edge, face-to-face with the strange beast that had been attacking your Pokemon. Its eyes were slanted and uncaring, but its beak was still turned in its mischievous smirk. Charmander was almost in position, but you remembered the totem kept hidden in your armor. Perhaps if you acted quickly, you could calm it down. As all this was going on, the Pokemon began shaking its hands rhythmically, chanting its own name, and for some reason the sunlight began to grow dull.

You grab the totem from within your armor, your hand running along the wood and scales, feeling a familiar weight. All you needed to do was touch it to the Pokemon before you, and it would clam down. So hopefully it would forgive you for how you had to go about it.

In one fluid motion you shot forward from the mud, and tackled the Lombre with all of your weight, firmly planting the red-specked wood directly in contact with the front of its face, sending your both hurtling deeper into the pond and under the water's surface. You saw the scales on the totem shimmer with the same glow they had the last time, only now they didn't fade away, but began to glow brighter.

The Lombre floated motionless, its eyes closed, possibly asleep, but that soon stopped mattering, as you say the undersides of the lillypads all around you, staring at you with a look of fear. Your were an invader in their home. However, the glow of the totem shined brightly, illuminating the murky depths with a dull red glow, as you could feel the wooden rod twist in your hand, seeing the serpent pattern spins around the totem, but not stopping as it reached your arm, but the scales and markings slithering their way up your arm, before reaching your face.

You frantically rose to stand in the waist deep water, however upon breaking the surface, you could see the world itself was tinged a bright red, the totem bare and lifeless in your hand. But around you, the lillypads swam towards you, from all sides. They wanted to hurt you, to kill you, and your only method of survival was to hurt them before they could hurt you back.

Somewhere deep inside your mind screams a voice telling you to "Calm down". They are clearly not aware of the mortal peril you are in right now, surrounded by enemies on all sides. You can't die now, not with your dream unfulfilled. You have no weapons, and are outnumbered six-to-one, but you will still fight, because you have no other option.

You ready your hand, nails out and ready to scratch. It feels natural, and right. You take aim at the Lotad swimming closest to you and glare through your red-eyed haze, and concentrate on its defeat. It is your prey, and you are the hunter. You fell your hand burn as it begins to sweat profusely, beads of sweat dripping off your surprisingly sharp nails into the water below. You wait for it to swim into arms reach, and the split second it does, you strike.

What now?

You hear the same voice again, pleading for your to relax, perhaps even louder than the last time, but you ignore it still. Your scratch has pained the Lotad in your way enough so you can take advantage of the gap and run to shore. Where Alan was, and more importantly your sword. These creatures wouldn't stand a chance against your blade, you just need to get a hold of it.

You burst through the opening a natural serpentine pattern forming with your steps, propelling you quickly out of the pond's waters. You saw Alan, holding the gear with a gasp on his face, but you had no time for that. You ran over to him and violently ripped your sword out of the supplies, shaking him to the ground. You could apologize later, you had your sword, and as the cold steel connected to your burning had, it felt right. As more sweat dripped down the blade's length you turned back to the water. The one you attack before seemed to be playing dead in an effort to trick you, but the other would be coming for you soon. You needed to act.

Finally, out of the water and out of danger, your mind snaps back to reason. You made it out, there's no need to continue fighting. You turn to Charmander, right by your side, and see the frightened look in his eyes. They you catch a glimpse of yourself in the reflection of the water.

Your eyes are bloodshot to the point they are more red than white, your nails have grown long and pointed, and your right arm is burned in streaks down to the nails, with a sweat dripping off the blade, and sizzling as it makes contact with the ground. And for the first time, you feel the weight of the totem in your left hand, and you let go. The world flashes back in a bright shock of light, and a sensation of burning all over your body as you feel your nails retract and whatever had been done to your arm forcibly revert in seconds. You look to see the totem laying on the ground, the serpent carvings still in tack, as if nothing had happened.

You look around again to see the Lotads acting sufficiently less malevolent then you remember, gathered around one floating on his side, a deep red gash along his side that seemed to be sizzling slightly. And behind you Alan was on the ground, covered with the remainder of your and his equipment.

You sheath your sword and turn back to Alan. You realized it might be a bad idea for you to push down your current employer, and perhaps he would have a better viewpoint on what had just happened. You offer a hand, which surprisingly he accepts, only to retract it away after contact with your skin. He gets up on his own accord and brushes himself off. "I did warn you about that totem."

You're surprised by the utter lack of malice in his voice, which actually makes you feel more guilty. He's not even mad at you, when its clear you'd done some bad things. You decide to cut to the chase and just flat-out ask him. "What did it do to me?"

He ponders a moment behind his hooded gaze. "It seems like it might have been using parts of a poisonous Pokemon to absorb the negative emotions of Pokemon, and distilling them into a literally venom. And when the totem was filled with this venom, it infected you with it, which allowed you to take on aspects of the Pokemon. It seems it was too much for you to control."

You look down in shame, but seem to take solace in the lack of anger Alan provided. Charmander hugged your leg tightly, seemingly happy that you were back to normal, kipping his name happily. Your head turns back to the totem laying on the ground.

You turn your attention to the group of Lotads floating in the pond around the injured on. You're not sure what you can do to help, but its your fault its injured in the first place. You're going to make this right.

As you enter the water, the other Lotad initially swim towards you aggressively, but as you continue to wade in their false bravado soon dissipates, causing them to flee to the other side of the pond. However, the lone Lotad is on its side, its own wound still sizzling, a closer inspection revealing a slick purple fluid. No doubt traces of your venom.

Just from looking at the Lotad, you can see you're out of your depth here. You call back to Alan to meet you at the shore, hopefully he knows more about poisons than you. As you lightly float the injured Pokemon back to shore, you notice the trail of purplish blood its leaving behind. If Alan wasn't able to help it, it might be too late to do any good.

Kneeling from the safety of the dry pond side, Alan took a close look at the wound. "It appears non-leathal by itself. But that's not accounting for the poison.... hold on..." He shifts through his robe, before procuring a small bag of green powder, and bends down even closer to lightly blow a small amount of powder onto the wound, causing it to glow softly before fading into the flesh.

"That should neutralize the poison. The wound itself should heal in time. I can cast a spell to be sure, but it might not be necessary." You give him a quizzical look, the wound looks a lot worse then you would think a non-lethal wound should. Maybe its worth it.

You shake off your concerns. Alan is an Alchemist, and you're a runaway princess whose on day two of her grand adventure. Its clear whose medical opinion was more valid. You all the Lotad to float back, its companions swimming towards it as you exited the water. Then the totem looms into your sight, standing on the ground where you dropped it. It would have to be dealt with before you left. "Alan, what do you think I should do about it."

The Novice Mage turns his gaze to the totem as well. "I would burn it. The effects aren't worth the price. There are other ways to calm Wild Pokemon without resorting to shamanism."

You hear his words, but you can't help but color them with your subconscious. It was so easy for him to say get rid of it. He hadn't felt it, the pure power, the heightened instincts, the ease of movement. It made you a better you, if only you could be the one in control when it happened. However, you're not sure if any amount of training could tame you when you were in that sate. So maybe Alan was right...

You look over to Alan, and are glad for once you can't see the disappointment in his eyes as you reach down to wrap the totem in a piece of cloth. It definitely took more than it gave, but what it gave may someday be exactly what you need. As you pack it away, you realize your time in the pond has left you soaking wet, but the off chance of the Lombre waking up is more than enough reason to pack up and head off to find a new place to set up camp for the night.

The sun is beginning to descend closer to the horizon, and you estimate you may only have a few more hours of daylight left. If you rode straight towards Emerald Lake, you could make camp along the road and still make good time by morning. However, you could also get out your map and maybe try and find a nearby village within riding distance, however that would put your further off schedule.

You decide that camping out will be your punishment for taking this detour in the first place. You needed to keep to a schedule, even if your camping gear was minimal at best. You saddle up Girafarig with little trouble, it having gotten over its earlier fright pretty well. However, you could hear the discomfort of Alan as he saddled up behind you, causing you to be even more reminded of your soaked state. You would just have to make due, as Charmander was saddled in your lap, being extra careful guarding his tail.

The road was uneventful for the most part, and good time was made on the way to Emerald Lake, however you were still a good deal away from the Lake itself by the time sunset arrived. You decided to ride some ways off the main path, on the off chance a caravan of your father's soldiers happened past in the night.

The set-up was easy enough. One of the benefits of having a walking fire-hazard was that camp fires came naturally, and without a tent or bed rolls, a sheet on the ground and a supply bad as pillow was the best you could do. Alan's side was even more minimalistic, simply laying down a sheet on the ground and propping himself against his bag. Girafarif had already laid down to rest, however its second head remained active, always watching, never blinking... kind of creepy, actually. You polish your blade, attempting to get the marks the vemon had left off.

That reminds me, we have a steel rapier - does this mean we do bonus damage to rock types etc? From a logical standpoint, no, and the quest seems to be favouring that standpoint over game mechanics, but I feel it would be good to know.
>>
>>34519782
You look over to see Alan comfortably resting, and decide you'd taken up enough of his time today. Besides, even if he was asleep Girafarig was more than alert enough for the two of them. You motion to Charmander slightly, pointing off into the distance away from their camp. He happily jumps to his feet, following you with a renewed enthusiasm.

You make your way to a clearing, a few meters in diameter, far enough from any tall grass to start a fire, just in case. You turn your attention to training. Earlier today had been about getting his breath attack down, but that was too flashy and loud for right now. Besides, you knew so little about spells and magic, Alan made a better instructor for that kind of fighting. However, your experience with the totem earlier today had taught you just how similar a blade and a claw can be. And since you knew how to use your blade with a decent bit of skill, you might be able to impart some of that useful information upon Charmander.

You turn to the orange lizard and draw your rapier, pointing it at the Pokemon as a challenge to a duel. He gives you a confused look, before realizing what you're trying to do, and takes a mimicked version of your stance, his claw outstretched in your direction. You only knew a few fighting styles, but that was still more than Charmander knew, so you might as well try.

You decide to teach what you know best: Fencing. Maybe if you had more experience with the totem, but that was a dangerous game to play. You'd rather Charmander had complete and total control over its power, and could direct it any which-way it pleased. You simply smirked at your point as you brought down your sword in an attack position, it was the best way you knew. And so you charged at Charmander and struck.

After almost and hour of the sounds of claws against metal, and the dull parts of each hitting the other, the two of you wandered back into camp. Charmander learned marvelously, mimicking your sword with his claws gave him a sense of precision he probably didn't even think he was capable of. He had always had the raw strength, you had simply refined it. His claws looked worn from your spar, but also sharper.

You were too tried to fret over the details for now, though. In fact, you were too tired to care that your bed was a single sheet of cloth over a path of grass. You barely stripped off your armor before crashing to the ground, fighting to stay awake. You felt the thud of Charmander collapsing on top of your back, his unnatural warmth too inviting in this cold open air to push away. And sleep came all too easily.

No. We're not going to do that ever. Did you miss the part that using the totem fucks us up?

Did you miss the part that using the totem gives us poison claws? How is that not worth an attempted refinement?
>>34520472
As always, thanks for running.

Thanks for running, Cleffa. One question: is there any reason for all the past-tense narration? And if there is, not to be rude or anything, can you work on not mixing it with present-tense narration?

Anyways, I like the story so far. Keep up the good work.

>implying we won't pull it out at our most dire moment
>implying we won't master its battle lust and enter a war trance of restrained destruction.

Yeah, sure. That sort of situation is fine. But pulling it out for anything else (like what people wanted to do just to train Charmander) is really not worth the shit it does to us.

I don't think the option was to pull it out when training Charmander, simply draw from the experience it gave you
>>
>>34520531
Whoops, I see where that happened. I'll try and remember to fix that in the future.
