The smell of food is heavenly, many of the scents completely new to me. Gods, but I hope they have beef stew.

Something simple, something NORMAL after this completely abnormal day. Hey, maybe I could cook it for all of us. That would be nice, and maybe Eriadne would like it! Mama said that people that you don't really know a person until you've cooked for them. Pa said the same about fighting, but that's so not happening with her!

Sora's already seated in a corner somewhere sipping a strange green liquid from a tall glass. That won't do.

With a hurried "Excuse me, I'll be right back" I leave my companions behind and quickly begin to push two of the worn tables not built into the walls together. Oof, but make a lot of noise. Thankfully few are staring and it turns out I'm just strong enough to move them with ease.

That done, I wave the redhead over before turning to Eriadne and the twins.

"We'll all sit together!"

"Yer a strange one" Sora says, but nevertheless puts her tray down. Hey, there's nothing strange about wanting to spend time with friends!

"Who is being strange?" I don't jump. That would be silly, and against what I've learned. No, I didn't just shiver, I'm not that easily startled.

Reading a quest by Hexer is like having a deadbeat alcoholic for a dad. Every weekend he promises to play with you, and every weekend it's the same. On Saturday you try to rouse him at 3 PM after hours of fruitlessly waiting for him to get up on his own. All you ask is go out back and play catch. You just want to spend some time with him. "In a minute," he grumbles, his face half-smooshed into the couch cushions where he passed out the night prior surrounded by empty bottles, "I'll be out in a minute. Go and wait for me."

So you go outside with your catcher's mitt and your ball and you sit on the swing in the backyard -- the swing that's too rickety to actually swing on because dad half-assed assembling it in a drunken stupor two weeks after he gave it to you for a Christmas present -- you sit on the swing with your catcher's mitt and your ball and you wait. And you wait. And you wait. And the sun starts to droop low in the sky and your hopes start to droop with it. From neighboring backyards you can hear the joyous concord of other children playing with their fathers, fathers who love them. You hear peals of laughter and conversation. You smell barbecuing meat and freshly mown grass, so different from the dead brown weeds in your yard.

Finally you go back inside to check on him. He's asleep, of course. You shake him. "Dad, you promised," you say. "You promised!"

"Ugh," he groans, rising. He stumbles toward the patio door, knocking over beer bottles in his wake. Twice he nearly falls down.

Bleary eyed and ashen he stands in the backyard. He listlessly chucks the ball to you a couple times. It's clear that he doesn't even want to be here. After five minutes he turns to go back in.

"That's it?" you ask.

"Daddy's tired," he says. "We'll have to finish next week."

You sit back on the swing and watch him through the pane glass door as he sits on the couch again and cracks open another beer. A you watch him drink, your tears finally come. Then the swing collapses.

Reading a quest by Hexer is like having a hikkikomori for a dad. All day he sits at his computer drafting up crazy plans and scenarios for the adventures you'll have together, but he never actually wants to go on those adventures.

At 3PM on a Saturday you try to grab his attention as he works on a blueprint for a mechanized waterslide that he wants to erect in the backyard. "Dad," you say, "you promised to play catch with me today."

"This waterslide is gonna be great!" he says, ignoring your plea. "It'll have three different sliding modes, a turbo gear, two tiers... and of course robotic maids to clean up..."

You cut him off. "Dad, you're never gonna build that stupid slide or any of those other inventions. We have two mitts and a ball, can't we just play catch? I just want to play catch. That's all."

He looks nervously out the window and gulps. "S-son, you know it's... hard... for me..."

You fold your arms. "You said you'd do it. Why can't you be like the other dads? Why can't you play with me?"

He stands. He hugs himself as he paces back and forth in his dingy bedroom, trying to work up the courage to leave the house. All for your sake. After an hour of muttering to himself, he finally gets the nerve to step out. Even though he's trembling and clearly scared shitless, he has the catcher's mitt on and he's willing to do his best.

Because of his crippling anxiety at being outside, the game of catch takes forever. Every time he has the ball, he takes what feels like hours to toss it to you. He keeps glancing this way and that like he's waiting for some impending doom, and can't hold up his end of the conversation. After five minutes he scuttles back inside, apologizing under his breath, promising to do more next week.

Five minutes later you see him drafting plans for a steam-powered battlesuit. "It's gonna be great!" he insists. "You'll love it, it's going to have a turbo mode, and dynamic power... and of course a robotic maid to clean it..."
