Mami's like Batman, except prettier and with more lasers. And breasts. Batman's pretty flat.

You dust your hands, straighten your skirt, reposition your cute little hat, and sigh as a pack of cybernetic dinosaurs- they look an awful lot like the velociraptors in Jurassic Park, which also means they don't look very much like velociraptors.

There are only three of them, and the sun is only just beginning to set... which means the ever-bright street-lights of Academy City are beginning to be switched on, providing you with a near-limitless supply of photons to blast things with.

You are Mami Tomoe, the 'Bringer of the Light', a Level 4 Photokineticist living in and protecting the liberties of Academy City, and you're really getting tired of fighting these stupid robots.

MOP-MAN has gone too far this time, you think as your Psi-stone flashes from within, sending a beam of blinding golden light at the bionic dinosaur that was trying to sneak up on you from behind.

The beam lances straight through the metal plate covering its... forehead(?) and out the other side, where it immediately disperses (you wouldn't want any collateral damage, after all!).

You giggle softly at the thought that you just killed a cyborg-dinosaur by shooting it in the face with it's own image, reflected in the crystalline cyber-brain that is your Psi-stone.
>>
The three in front of you spread out a little more in response to your termination of their comrade- one remains in the center of the street, while the others are slightly ahead of it and on either sidewalk. It strikes you that they don't really seem THAT out of place, strangely enough- it's almost as if they blend in with the graffiti and trash that litters the Strange...

Other than their slight change in formation, however, they don't react to your attack. They simply continue stalking towards you, their augmetic eyes flashing in the light of the setting sun.

You narrow your eyes at them.

There's something... off... about this.

You take two steps back, jump, and pirouette. “Photonic Resonance Barrier!” You exclaim as you direct the light hitting your body outwards, forming it into a multitude of glowing golden rings around yourself, each one useful for both offense and defense.

They don't react to this, either.

They continue their cautious advance… you can't help but notice the claws on their toes are long and hooked and razor-sharp... and their fore-claws aren't anything to scoff at, either... their teeth are clearly made to rip and tear into skin and muscle, too...

You shake your head, sending your drills bobbing about in the process. You can't let them intimidate you! That's what they want!

You know you've still got three more flash grenades in your skirt- as well as two high-power flashlights- and the dozen or so laser-pointers you've got tucked into your hat. You've also the last few rays of the setting sun, as well as the streetlights...

What do you do?

… Whatever it is that's going on, it makes your skin crawl.

You'll deal with them quickly, you decide. They stalk closer and closer, and you smile, tilt your head a little, and lift your skirt in just the right way...

The metallic clinking as the grenade hits the ground and bounces once, its pin already pulled, is your cue to bring your foot back and kick it into their midst.

Your grenade-kick is pretty great. You hit the flashbang with the top of your foot and send it hurtling into the central raptor's snout with a not-insignificant amount of force. The cyber-dino recoils at the impact, and the grenade bounces up into the air and back in your direction.

It detonates a meter and a half off of the pavement, almost exactly in the center of the two flanking robo-reptiles. It's so loud that you're not even sure you heard it.

You don't even flinch- not that bright lights bother you or in any way impair your vision or anything. You react almost instinctively, taking the light produced and focusing and directing it to suit your will.

You bombard them with lasers non-stop for two-and-a-half seconds.

… They never stood a chance.

You click your tongue and inspect the now-very-much-perforated corpses. Your ears are ringing, and you've still got a bad feeling about all of this...

You blink a few times and scowl as your mind clears.

You must have a concussion or five, you think.

You can't imagine what that would've been like had you not had your barrier up...

You shake your head to make sure you've cleared the fog and force yourself to stand. As an afterthought, you reach up to your shoulder (which seems to have been dislocated) and shove it back into place.

Standing across the street from you is...

Blurry.

You blink your eyes a few times, then rub them, and look again.

It's a girl.

A cyborg, judging by the strangely-glowing and clearly-augmetic orange eyes, the metal tail extending from the base of her spine, the military-grade (we're talking Academy City 'military-grade, here) prosthetic arms and legs, and the GIGANTIC METAL FISTS.

She's glaring at you.

There's something wrong, here...

The two of you stare at one another for a moment, as if both of you are unsure how to proceed.

You find yourself shifting into a defensive stance, ready to fight or move as needed. She doesn't seem to take offense to this, at least, so that's a thing.

You brush your fingers over your Psi-stone and it flashes with that familiar golden light once more. You should set up a barrier...

Your ring setup is good for both offense and defense, but it only barely kept that punch of hers from outright killing or maiming you. A complete barrier, on the other hand, means you can't attack without an external light source, and, even then, you can't really do much offensively.

You set up a full barrier, naturally- you hold up your Psi-stone and enunciate, “Photonic Resonance Barrier!” (it sounds super-weird, though, 'cause you still can't hear).

Light blossoms forth from the stone and spreads open like the petals of a flower, then continues until it's folded around you, encompassing you entirely.

Sparks of electricity crackle around the outside of your barrier as errant particles have their electrons ripped off by the extremely focused light you're projecting.

Essentially, you're surrounded by a shield that turns the air it comes into contact with into plasma. In fact, you probably sound like a one-woman thunderstorm right now. Not that you can hear anything.

You provide a little more give to the barrier, and the plasma thing stops. You breathe a sigh of relief. Last time you did this, you got struck by lightning.

FOUR. MOTHERFUCKING. TIMES.

You want a drink just thinking about it.

The cyborg girl is staring at you, still. But now she seems sorta... different.

Wide-eyed, you think.

I think we'll switch perspectives, here, because writing a one-way conversation from the side that can't hear... it's bleh.

You gape at the blonde, drill-haired lady who's now glowing with a golden light, electricity crackling off of her with miniature claps of thunder accompanying each little bolt.

You... aren't entirely sure who you are. You remember being called... 'Berserker,' you think. It wasn't your name, though. You're not sure what your name was- is?- but it's not 'Berserker,' that's for sure.

More importantly, though, you're feeling a lot more calm than you were just a minute ago.
“...pretty...” you mutter into your abnormally-large collar. It's the only thing that comes to mind as you watch, transfixed, as the lady shimmers and glows.

You don't really remember why you were so angry.
How could you ever hit something so beautiful?

… Something tells you you've hit other beautiful things before, too.

Your eye twitches and you grit your teeth.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO REMEMBER?!

You clench your gloves' fists into fists (shocking, right?) and let them rest on the ground, standing on their own as you disengage from them with a pneumatic hiss and a couple of whirrs and clicks as your own hands rearrange themselves into a normal configuration.

As soon as you're free, you bring your hands up to your temples and begin massaging them.

WHY DOES YOUR HEAD HURT SO MUCH?!

IT'S PISSING YOU OFF!

YOU JUST WANT TO REMEMBER! THAT'S ALL!

SO WHY IS IT SO HARD?!

That's your name! Koutari Yuu!

They started calling you Strength after you died and they fixed you, and then...

You are Akari Takamichi, a Level 4 Pyrokineticist trying to stay sane and do what's right in Academy City, it's the morning of the 25th of July, and Mato's cuddling you extra-tightly- in fact, you're really uncomfortable, because it HURTS.

You wriggle out of her grip and head to the kitchen, where you start making breakfast foods in mass quantities.

Mato wanders in and proceeds to hug you from behind again.

“Good morning, Akari,” she yawns. You return the greeting with a giggle, and she squeezes you a little tighter.

“Is something wrong, Mato?” You wheeze as you reach over to turn the burner off.

“... Yeah.” She pauses for awhile. “I got a message from Fate. Testarossa 'perfected' her gas yesterday, I guess. I'm not even sure what it's supposed to do, if it was so close to completion before she tested it on the Skill-Ins... and I'm not sure I want to, either.”

Testarossa.

The name fouls your mood by nature of its very mention.

She's evil, willing to kill millions and millions of people for the sake of her insane fantasy world, and nobody seems to care enough to stop her.

She needs to die. That's what you decided before.

For the betterment of mankind, she has to stop breathing.

“Akari?”

“Yeah?”

“How would you feel if I said I wanted to make a contract with Kyuubey?”

Kyubey has stolen our innocence.

I still don't beliefe he is actually that trustworthy, he still uses others to work for him and keeps his cars far too close to his chest than I would call trustworthy. Also, I dsilike the general idea from spreading among the cast. Akane and Mami are already two close characters with Psi-stones, its really getting a bit much as power-update.
>>
>>34466676
How has he not been open? He's answered all the questions people ask before contracting. The only non-open thing he's done is not show Akari is form for god knows what reason.

Which was a dumb as hell move on his part, since she might trust him more if he had.

You're killing me. All of this soul stuff is unwarranted and meta, and she didn't ask if you'd hate her.

FFS, she wants to know if you're willing to overlook your own feelings on this to trust her to do what's right. She wants to know if you trust her. She wants to know why you don't want her to become stronger.
>>
>>34467987

Yes, I trust her.
No, I do not trust an alien who will not show me his face.
>>
>>34468004

Trust Mato? Yes. Trust Kyuubey? Never.
>>
>>34468004
>she wants to know if you're willing to overlook your own feelings on this to trust her to do what's righ
We literally said a hour ago that we would not hate her, which obviously implies that if she does it, we would accept it, even if begrudgingly, which is the answer to the question if we trust her. Yes we do. That doesn't mean we would give approval if she asks.
This has nothing to do with trusting Mato, because if we wouldn't trust her, we would have said in the first option don't do it. But we said we wouldn't hold it against her.
>>
>>34468004
She doesn't NEED to become stronger. She's strong enough just as she is, getting her mind shoved into a rock wont change things.
>>
>>34468004
>She wants to know why you don't want her to become stronger
Then she should ask that. Because we made it more than clear we don't want tit, but we would accept it, because we rabu rabu her anyway.
>>
Hey. I have an idea. Let's have Mato ask Kyuubey why he won't show himself to us.
>>
>>34468060
Clearly you don't, because you're not answering that way. You're telling her that you don't trust him and completely ignoring her part in this. You're treating her like a child.

She trusts the cat, you don't. And you don't trust her enough to make the right decision. That's what you're saying, here.

>>34467987
No, he'll do his best to save the universe. He doesn't much care about you personally. Countless billions of beings are more important than you.

>>34468130
It implies that you care for her enough that you wouldn't hate her even if she did something you perceive as wrong.

>>34468158
She believes she does need to be stronger. At the moment, she sees herself as a liability, rather than an asset.
>>
>>34468239
>She believes she does need to be stronger. At the moment, she sees herself as a liability, rather than an asset.
Well then let's attack that particular angle instead of going in circles about this whole psi-stone thing.
>>
>>34468239
>You're treating her like a child.
She started it by asking for permission. Don't say it's my decision and expect me to take your feelings into account, dummy.
>>
>>34468239
>And you don't trust her enough to make the right decision.
No thats not at all what we are saying. If we wouldn't trust her to make the right decision, we would have said "No don't" at the beginning. But we offered that we would not hold it against her if she would make that choice.
That means pretty strongly, that yes, if she would make that choice we would accept it. Trust never figures into it.

> You're treating her like a child.
No we aren't, we are giving her honest answers to her questions. If she were a child, we would tell her no, she isn't allowed to do it. But we didn't. We only gave her answer to her questions, we never presumed to order her not to do it, until she asked if we would give permission if it were our decision to make, which it isn't.
>>
Okay.
Let's do this more organized-like.
>Ask why she wants to contract so much.
>Ask why she'd ask for permission if she was going to do it anyways.
>You'd kill him.
>You don't know.
>Something else (Write-in)
>>
>>34468239
>At the moment, she sees herself as a liability, rather than an asset.
If she honestly thinks that as a Level 3 Esper. Than she got a issue that more superpowers and Psi-stons wouldn't solve. Insecurity. And we can help that just fine without the Aliens help.
>>
>>34468416
>Ask why she wants to contract so much.
If she's really that insecure, let's point out that she's actually one of the best assets we have, especially since Kyuubey is still rather suspect. I do hope the last few pages of discussion aren't going to be completely ignored though.
>>
>>34468428
The both of you almost died the other day, because you lost your shit when she got her shit kicked.
She's insecure because she feels like she's out of her league.
>>
>>34468416
>>Ask why she wants to contract so much.
This is the key element here, why is she so hellbent on this?
>>You'd kill him.

>>
>>34468487
Then I guess it's time for training! Proper training though, no cheating through Faustian bargain shortcuts.
>>
>>34468416
>Ask why she wants to contract so much.
>You'd make him reverse it.
>Tell her that she is a wonderful and incredibly strong girl that we could always rely on, and know we can always rely on in the future. She doesn't need power-enhancing technology to be strong enough. Her emotional strength alone keeps us from flipping out completly right now. And if she really thinks she needs more physical power, then there are other ways than shady deals. We don't want her to take a risk or challenge that we can't fight back to back, like we always can. She protects us when we stumble and we do the same, thats how it has always been.

He's an intelligent being, and he hasn't done anything wrong.

I'm sorry if I'm a bit frustrated here, but when I say something's a certain way, that's the way it is.

And the fact that you'd put all the blame on Kyuubey instead of Mato, even though she's the one wanting the contract, just makes it even worse. It implies that you don't consider her capable of making important decisions or taking care of herself. Also known as TREATING HER LIKE A CHILD.

And when you vote for multiple choices to make something that involves asking a question and then telling her things, it means you're not taking the time to consider her response to the question.
>>
Rolled 19 (1d20)

>>34468751
You sound frustrated.

Rolling to interrupt this conversation with something silly.
>>
>>34468751
First, while it happens, the order in which the options are chosen, isn't necessarily the order in which it has to happen. She can easily say these things, and then ask her. Or vice versa, depending on how the conversation goes. Thats just common practice.

Second. On guy voted for killing him.

Third. We would put not the entire blame on Kyuubey. We already said we won't hate Mato for doing this, because she is Mato and rabu rabu and all that. Not because we wouldn't have a problem with it. Kyuubey knows our stance on this, and yes, we would be very right in being mad at him if he were to do it anyway. Its not his fault, we'd still be mad. Because he is the one who offers it.
I'm not gonna pretend its completly rational, but neither is Akari.
>>
>>34468751
Mato IS a child in comparison to the alien who's probably older than any count can accurately measure, and any contract between the two would be pretty damn unfair considering he's likely spent more time on drawing up a single clause than the entire human race has by existing. Yes, she wants the benefit of the contract, but if there's a hidden cost somewhere there's not much she can do about that and she doesn't seem to be taking that into account. As far as murdering the cat goes, it's like you said earlier: he doesn't care about us, only about his "greater good", and I for one am not looking forward to seeing what kind of lesser evils he's ready to excuse and/or commit against us and ours to serve that cause. You've got me on the multiple responses though, sorry about that.
>>
>>34468911
You've all but gotten word of god that Kyuubey is on the level, and you're still suspecting him of foul play?
>>
>>34468948
Akari is, in any case.
>>
>>34468948
You're goddamn right I am, we've also gotten word of god that he doesn't care much about us personally and we have no idea what he can or will do to serve the greater good of the universe that might have negative consequences for us. He could decide to kill Mato tomorrow in order to push us over to level 5, or maybe try to hijack EXTERIOR to force us to reach level 6, and in his eyes it would be a good deed. There is no such thing as too paranoid when it comes to situations like this.
>>

>>34468698
See, this is a good idea. You could totally suggest that as an alternative!

>>34468911
See, the thing about that is, doing EVIL things tends to make people see you as EVIL. Kyuubey's not stupid. He's not going to screw Mato over. What possible benefit could he get from that? He wants to stop entropy.
You want to kill him because he's 'using' people you know to help further his goals, which involve making you the best you can possibly be, maintaining your happiness, and keeping you sane enough to not go on a crazy rampage.

You're justifying your intent to murder with 'HE MIGHT DO SOMETHING BAD LATER'.

>>34468803
Okay.
Good enough for me.
>>
I'm gonna point out that there is a second character in this story who offers free superpower-upgrades and wants to spread them for the "greater good".
Hint, its our villain.

So Akari has all reason to heavily distrust Kyuubey, even if we know he is on the level.

It even offers that "hey but we might be wrong, but lets do it different instead, yeah ?".

You slowly turn to look out the window...

There's a cow outside your window.

>Because it shows her that you don't trust her and wouldn't respect her decision.
But that's not what we mean by that, the entire point is that we're explaining that we do in fact want to help her, and that this is part of trying to help. Is pointing out that she might not have considered every facet of the situation really such a grievous insult?

I know it's not what you mean. That's why I told you what it would sound like. That's the reason for it.
I'm trying to clarify, and you keep on ignoring things and then arguing with me over them.
Mato isn't a mind reader. She doesn't know what you mean. And, in some cases, what you're trying to say is irrelevant.
>>
>>34469713
Akari isn't a mind-reader either, but with all this OOC information we're ignoring she might as well be.
>>
>>34469713
If that's not how she takes it, then we'll argue over it and eventually get our point across properly. Sure beats the hell out of standing back and potentially letting god-knows-what happen instead.
>>
>>34469713
I'm not sure why exactly you are telling us what Mato would understand, thats just not relevant, because Akari can't read Matos mind, and that response is perfectly sensible, if it gets twisted into something else in Matos mind, we have no business knowing that and it just happens.
So its pretty understandable people won't understand you mean that is what Mato think, if you never say so, and we have no reason to assume you would tell us Matos thought process here.
>>
>>34469777
>>34469812
Because Akari knows Mato very well, and has known her for years?
And you've known her for maybe ten threads?
Akari knows how Mato will respond to certain things better than you do, and by giving you that information, I'm trying to help you stay in character.

If she's just looking for validation, she's not going to get it from us. SHE asked US out of the blue what we would do if we had the authority, which we actually don't, and we gave her an honest answer. If we're going to work out her insecurities then we're going to have to argue over all this a bit, and that's ok.

You stare at the big, dopey creature. It stares back.

“Let's just ignore it,” you suggest.

“MOOOOOOOOOOOO.”

“Akari, I llllllllllllllllllllike toast.”

Mato makes a noise that tells you she's rather irritated.

“Love,” she says, “Akari.” “Mato.”

She pauses.

You merely spectate.

“If there was a word that expressed how I feel about Akari, it would be l-”

“MOOOOOOOOO.”

“IF I WERE TO SPELL OUT MY FEELINGS FOR AKARI,” Mato shouts, “THEY WOULD BE SPELLED L-O-”

“MOOOOOOOOOOO.”

Or, y'know, here in the thread until it dies.
Either's fine.

Don't you judge me.

Oh, also, before I forget...

I think we're operating under slightly different definitions of "pointless shit" QM. Regardless, things still turned out decently and I look forward to the next thread.
>>
>>34472786
Esper I like you and all. But you started arguing with us, not the other way around.
We were irritated with Mato, as in, the character, until you started a argument on it.
>>
>>34472834
In QM's defense I probably came on a bit strong with the anti-Kyuubey stance, though I don't plan to retract any of that any time soon.
>>
>>34472960
That wasn't the issue though.
He should have just let us make our choices instead of going on a rant all the time. And let us discuss these things wth Mato the character instead of with him. And if there was some special insight to be offered from Akaris perspective, he should have written it in-character instead of expecting us to act on OOC knowledge.
The whole thing was just pointless and inane, since if we would have talked it out with the character Mato, we would have still arrived here without the Cow bullshit.
>>
>>34472828
I was mostly agitated by all the 'souls' and talk of doing things Akari wouldn't do, i.e. murdering someone for forming a contract with a consenting and completely willing partner, where both parties benefit from the agreement.
That shit ain't justice, yo.
That's murder.

Except no one voted to do that, two people voted for Akari threatening she would do it. And yeah, it was a irrational idea completly shooting over the target. Which givenb how strongly we have established Akari feels about this thing, makes perfect sense. A character can make horrible choices.
>>
>>34473119
I don't know.
But this quest is weird, man.

>>34473141
Three people voted for it, it was part of the write-in. And Akari's a nice girl, and domestic arguments aren't cute or fun, they're annoying to write and they make babies cry.
>>
>>34473073

>>
>>34473173
>and domestic arguments aren't cute or fun
Then next time just tell us that youwon't allow write-in because its consequences would lead into a tone that you wouldn't enjoy, instead of flipping your shit and telling us how horrible and evil it is.
