Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

You managed to work out the tension built up from everything... by taking on several dozen armsmen. And winning. More or less. Despite being exhausted after this, your night was spent dreaming of a girl, Naomi, which created more questions than answers. While uncertain, you started your day off by visiting the Inquisitor, and now moved onto checking on Roxy.

You and Roxy depart Alpha’s barracks, leaving behind the two remaining still able members. While you didn’t specifically come down for it, the Sergeant seems to be prepared for a lecture of some sort. So much for hoping she would be the one to start things. You key the elevator, but as always there’s going to be a wait.

>”How are you holding up?”
>”Take your time. I’ve got all day.”
>”He's not going to be dead anymore than he was yesterday, Sergeant.”

Despite what Roxy may be thinking your intentions for coming down here weren't vindictive. Remaining casual, you patiently wait for the elevator to meet you.

"Take your time," You tell her. "I've got all day."

You don't turn to look but you can guess at her reaction. However, even after the elevator heralds it's arrival with a chime she remains silent. It isn't until you're both in and ascending that Roxy lets out a weary sigh.

"He believed in me," She says, sounding more like she's talking to herself than to you. "Even back when I had just made Corporal, he said he knew I'd make it farther. He..."

Her voice falters and her jaw clenches, as if willing any tears away. None fall. You don't say a word and let her grieve. After a few moments she collects herself and finally looks up at you.

"How do you do it?" She asks. "How do you keep it all from getting to you?"

>"I don't."
>"It takes time, but the pain dulls."

"I don't."

Two simple words, but they seem to completely shock the Sergeant, and for the longest time she's speechless. Then, as if seeing you in a new light, snaps out of it.

"But, you..." She starts.

"You think that I've got it all together?" You chuckle dryly. "I've got more problems than I'm willing to admit, Sergeant, but that's not why we're here. I can't pat you on the back and tell you it'll all be okay, because it won't be. People you care about, those under your command, are going to die. You just have to learn ways to cope."

To your approval this seems to make Roxy straighten, at least some of her melancholy falling away. For the moment, at least. Seemingly embarrassed about her previous behavior, she clears her throat and gives you a bemused smile.

"You might have problems, LT, but at least you've got a system," She says.

The elevator chimes and comes to a halt, opening to reveal a hall you've not seen in some time.

"Of course I do," You tell her, stepping through. "I don't pick a fight with several dozen armsmen for my own amusement."

"Yeah, I guess... wha-so that's what happened last night?" She stumbles over her words at first, coming to a bewildered stop by your casual mention of last night's events.

"You missed a damn good fight," Is your only explanation without halting, and the Sergeant struggles to catch up with you.

"The hell, LT? Details!" She demands, a portion of her typical energy back in place.

As you recount your fight to her she fails to pay attention to her surroundings. Though you were rather counting on it. By the time you stop in front of a particular door Roxy seems to finally realize this walk wasn't so random. Too bad for her it's too late.

The entrance to the infirmary you awoke in opens to reveal a slightly busier version of the one you remember. A handful of men and women wearing the robes of the Medicae are present, talking among themselves or attending to a fairly healthy looking Grover. Sitting on the edge of a bed next to him, Melodi spots the two of you almost instantly and waves you in with a smile.

"You son of a bitch," Roxy quietly says through a smile, returning the wave.

"It was either this or drag you here," You reply in a similar fashion.

You both approach the pair, and as you grow closer you almost think the tech-priest looks tired, judging from the faint bags under her eyes. Even so, she seems as chipper as ever while her less social colleagues hover away.

"Good morning," Melodi greets, then gets a good look at you and arches a curious brow. "Last time it was just the leg. What the hell happened NOW?"

"Oh, you know. Just entertaining the local men-at-arms." You shrug. "How's my favorite lobotomist today?"

"Suffering from a severe lack of lobotomites," Melodi huffs. "No one's volunteered in ages. Or, well, ever."

"And I don't plan on changin' the fact," Grover adds, nodding to you and Roxy.

"Glad to see you're okay," You tell the man.

While far from back to fighting shape, Grover seems to have taken the injury with surprising resistance and grace.

"He SHOULD still be unconscious," Melodi chips in, almost sounding annoyed. "Makes me wonder how he's still awake with both the bump on the noggin and the meds in his system."

"My mother always said I was stubborn," Grover answers with a grin. "Guess I never grew out of it."

"How's your other patient?" Roxy asks, her previous bout of confidence withering. For her part, Melodi gives her an encouraging smile.

"The exciting part ended about two hours ago," She explains. "By now I can safely say Private Ely will remain among the living for a while longer."

The relief on the Sergeant's face is obvious, and even you fail to suppress a smile at the good news.

"Can I see him?" Roxy asks.

"Well..." Melodi feigns giving the question serious thought. "For a minute, I think. Just be quick about it. Don't want to get yelled at this early in the morning."

"Thank you," Roxy says.

"Don't tell anyone about this. A ladies gotta keep a reputation, ya know."

Roxy takes a hesitant step forward, uncertain of herself. Then you give her a gentle pat on the shoulder and smile, the latter which she returns. Melodi points her toward the private room Gabriel is being roomed in and leaves the two of you alone. Somewhat. The crowd of Medicae personnel busy themselves doing inventory, or at least give off the illusion of being busy doing inventory.

You and Melodi take a short walk down the row of beds to allow Grover some rest, each taking a seat on an empty bed.

"So, how have you been?" You ask. "Working on anything interesting?"

"I have, actually." Melodi replies. "Thanks to you and the others I've been tinkering with a pair of pulse carbines and a few other pieces of Tau hardware."

"I was going to get you a battlesuit as a present, but I had to settle," You sigh.

"It's no bouquet of roses, but I suppose they'll suffice," She says, smirking. "I hear you've been out and about, yourself."

"It's different, working for the Inquisition. A lot slower pace than the Guard, to be sure. Well, for the most part."

"Met any new people?"

"Plenty. I got kidnapped by two. They were nice enough, though."

"Well, if you HAVE to get kidnapped..."

You both share a chuckle before you remember something and cringe, looking away.

"What?" Melodi asks, curious.

"I never apologized. About, you know. Before."

It takes her a moment to figure out your meaning, and even then she just shrugs, seemingly more amused than anything.

"No scrap off my mechy," She says, and the appendage in question comes to rest on her shoulder, nuzzling her neck like a cat as she pets it. "I've heard worse. That, and, well... I was having a bit of a bad day. A bad combination all around, really."

"Heh. Glad to hear," You say, rubbing your neck.

"But since you didn't try anything after that, I take it you've found somebody else to chase after," She teases. "So, who is it?"

"What? I dunno what you're talking about."

"Come on now, Mikkey, don't play coy. I know people, remember? Now, who's caught your eye?"

You’d rather not have this conversation, but maybe you can humor her?

"Well, there is this one girl... in my head..." You shrug.

Of all the answers she expected you to give, you feel this one came out of left field. Even for you.

"In your... what?" Melodi asks, brow furrowing in obvious confusion.

"Granted we've only met recently, I think we managed to hit it off well enough," You continue as if it's the most normal thing in the world. "She seems interested in me, which is new. A good new."

"Mikkey," She says, more than a little concern in her tone. "Just how hard did you get smacked around?"

"Hard enough."

The sound of her palm slapping against her forehead is clearly audible in the silence that follows.

"Don't make me psyche-eval your ass," She threatens, poking a finger at you. "Or better yet, finally get a candidate for my lobotomy program."

"Satisfied?" You ask in a similarly teasing tone.

"Sure," She rolls her eyes. "Now I've got a dozen more questions to go with the one answer."

"I try my best."

"Well, keep me in check if this girl of your starts showing up around the ship. Might have to talk to Chrissy about this one."

Even joking, getting her wrath aimed at you isn't a prospect you enjoy. It isn't long after that Roxy reappears. The time she spent with Gabriel seems to have done a great deal to help her shrug off some of the weight on her shoulder. Or at least, that's what you're hoping.

"How was he?" You ask.

"Weak, but alive," Roxy answers. "We talked for a minute, then I thought I'd let him rest. Thanks again, Ma'am."

"Ma'am?" Melodi snorts. "No need for that, Sergeant."

"Right," Roxy smiles sheepishly. "Will you be attending the memorial?"

"I will," Melodi nods. "I didn't know him well, but I'd patched the Corporal up enough to know enough."

"Good, good," Roxy nods, looking between the two of you. "I... think I'll go get some things settled before then. Thanks, LT. Melodi."

The Sergeant explains the details of the memorial to you both before she takes her leave before you can muster an argument. You think of stopping her, but rather than running she seems to actually have something to do.

"Keep up the good work, doc," You tell Melodi, making your own way toward the door.

"You too, Mikkey. Doing... whatever it is you do."

Leaving, you find that you still have time before the memorial starts. The only major thing that comes to mind is checking in with Vincent about the trackers, but given the circumstances you don't doubt he would be okay with you waiting a few hours.

You set out to find Vincent. Lucky for you, he's a difficult man to miss. When he isn't trying to hide, at least.

You find the Commander in a crowded hangar bay, with crewmen loading and unloading various civilian transports loaded with goods. The man in question stands atop a pile of crates, seemingly directing traffic with his knife in hand.

When he sees you though, he grins and signals for another of his men to take over, tossing the blade to the man and nearly giving him a heart attack and a stab wound in the process.

"Mikkey!" He calls, descending the pile at an impressive pace. He lands with flourish, making a show of dusting himself off before looking up at you. "Good to see you. You look like shit."

"I heard enough," Vincent grunts. "I don't take kindly to you kickin' around my people."

"They're the ones that challenged me."

"Still, I don-"

"They put money on the table."

"-'t see why I have to put up with a bunch of damn idiots. Give me ten of you and we can actually get shit done around here. Or maybe just another me," He shakes his head. "Anyways, what's up?"

"I was just checking in to see if those trackers gave any results."

"Right, them," He nods, looking over his shoulder despite the fact that the bay is completely packed with people. Still, no one seems to pay you any mind. "One's gone dark, but they're not the sturdiest things to begin with. I've got two somewhere in the middle hive, with the remaining three spread out in the upper hive."

"Brice?"

"Maybe," He shrugs. "I leave the detective work to the Lady. I just do the shooting, stabbing, and drinking."

"Here, here," You chuckle, then make a somber turn. "Think you'll be joining us later?"

"Yep," Vincent nods, immediately catching your meaning. "I may give'em shit, but Alpha's got its uses. Dom was a good man. The Sergeant, though..."

"I talked to her."

"Good. She might actually listen to you. Whatever you said. Now, let me get back before the dipshit up there causes a traffic jam."

With a farewell you and Vincent part ways, and you consider your options. Attending isn't a question, but how you go about handling a certain someone is. Specifically, a hard headed woman who, for some reason, isn't keen on attending today.

Before long the time comes and you set out to retrieve the Inquisitor. You find her, unsurprisingly, in her room.

"Ma'am," You greet.

"Lieutenant," She replies.

You pause, and for a moment you both stare expectantly at the other. Deciding to be nice, you don't draw it out.

"Are you doing something?"

"I am."

"Could you spare a few minutes from it?"

"Perhaps. For what?"

"To attend Corporal Beaudoin's memorial."

The Inquisitor sighs, sliding off her reading glasses and rubbing her temples. Again you wonder about her sleeping habits, but decide not to push the subject. For now, at least.

"Alright," She says, slowly getting to her feet. "I suppose I could."

"How long have you been sitting there, anyway?"

"Somewhere between too long and not long enough."

Your only response is to laugh, and with that you both head out. It's not a along trip to the chapel, and you still have a basic memory of where it was. There, a crowd of various crewmen, armsmen, and the remains of Alpha are present. At the end of the room, next to the pulpit where Father Mikel stands, sits a closed coffin. It's a plain, metal thing with the Imperial Aquila spread wide and proud. In front of it sits a pair of boots, housing a hellgun and a helmet.

Almost as soon as you step through the doors a hush goes over the room as people see the Inquisitor. Even Vincent, Melodi, and Roxy appear surprised at the new arrival. The Inquisitor, however, takes it in stride and greets them with a cordial smile.

"As you were," She urges, and after a few hesitant moments the buzz of conversation begins again. Albeit much slower and softer than before.

All four of the Inquisitor's companions close fairly quickly, curiosity clear on all their faces.

"Ma'am," Roxy snaps off a crisp salute. "Thank you for coming."

"A rare pleasure," Mikel nods.

"It was the least I could do," Christina replies.

"Better late than never," Vincent adds, though he actually means well for once.

"I saved you both a spot," Melodi says, signaling you both to follow. Though obviously holding reservations, the Inquisitor follows and so do you.

"How did you manage this?" The Tech-priests asks you as you sit, putting the Inquisitor between the two of you to prevent any possible escape.

"You'd be surprised what a nice word can get you," You shrug.

"You're both acting like this is a serious event," Christina complains, then realizes her wording. "I, well, I mean..."

"We get you," You assure her, fighting back a smile at her bashfulness.

"It's just a surprise, is all," Melodi nods. "A good surprise."

"So you say," Christina mutters, sinking ever so slightly into her seat.

Soon Father Mikel raises a hand, and as one the room goes silent. He looks over the crowd before his eyes fall on the casket. When he speaks, his deep voice fills the entire room.

"We are assembled here today to give respects and say goodbye to a good soldier, and a better man," He begins. "Corporal Beaudoin was as stout a servant of the Emperor as could be asked for. He had his faults, but so do we all. It is what makes us human. Even so, Corporal Beaudoin never shirked from his duty. Never complained... within earshot of those that mattered, at least."

A brief laugh went over the room before the Father continued on about the honor of dying in the Emperor's service. He also spoke of how he would be laid to rest on his homeworld of Cadia, forever written in the halls of heroes. He then deferred to Roxy, who spoke without too much trouble. Several other people, friends of Dominic, spoke as well about the man and their experience with him. When it was all over an honor-guard carried the casket away as a somber, patriotic tune played, and after the Father said a final prayer the crowd began to file out.

The hour grows late, and everyone begins to say their goodbyes. Roxy is quick to depart, thanking you and the Inquisitor one last time before vanishing. After all that, you decide to let her be. Now that you think about it, even the Inquisitor looks both physically and mentally drained by the entire thing. Perhaps she's not quite as distant as she liked to think.

"If it's quite alright with you, Lieutenant," She murmurs, looking over the thinning crowd. "I'll be heading back now."

"Actually, ma'am," You stop her just as she's about to leave. "I thought I'd take you up on your offer."

You expect her to make an excuse or try to talk you out of it. Instead, she merely smiles.

"I'd like that," She says, and signals for you to follow.

The trip back is a short one going rather than coming, and before long you're back to her room. She signals you inside.

"Take a seat," She says. "I'll get us a drink. Always wash down the bad with something good."

"Sounds like something I can get behind," You chuckle, easing into a chair.

Before long the Inquisitor returns with a glass of amasec and two glasses. With expert swiftness she fills both before taking her own seat behind the desk. Taking your drink, you raise it in a toast.

"To Dominic," You say.

"To Dominic," Christina echoes.

You down the glass a bit too quckly, considering the quality of its contents. However, the Inquisitor does the same, so you don't feel too bad. You stare down at the bottom of your glass before speaking again.

"We never recovered Dom's body."

"That's correct," Christina answers.

"Those weren't his boots, or his helmet, or his gun."

"Indeed."

"And his name won't make it back to Cadia either."

"That, at least, I can manage."

"Until it fades away and gets scraped for the next group of dead heroes, at least."

Her laughter takes you off-guard, but it's welcome sound. It almost degrades into a giggle, but she calms herself. Somewhat.

"What?" You ask, smirking at her behavior.

"God, but you Cadians are a bleak bunch!" She says, and after a moment's consideration you laugh too.

"No disagreement there," You say. "Cadian's always carry two things with them: a rifle, and cynicism."

"Trade the rifle for a rosette and the same goes for an Inquisitor. Fancy another drink?"

"Gladly."

Perhaps the punishment you put yourself through and Christina's typical workload has finally caught up with you both. Maybe it's just nice to finally take a step back from the grim, dark world and share a laugh. All you know is that it's a nice feeling.

Time goes on and the bottle drains, transforming into two. Then three. And so on. However, before long the affects become rather obvious. To both of you. Jokes are oddly funnier, and your eyes continue to grow heavier. Still, it's a rare sight to see Christina as anything resembling care-free.

You should probably head back... but it's a jo...jor... LONG ways away.

"Ma'am?" You ask.

"Yes?" Christina hiccups.

"I... uh... I'm..." You search for the right word.

"Shitfaced?" She offers.

"Yeah! That."

"Sounds like a personal problem, Leftenant," She giggles.

"Left who?" You shake your head. "A-anyways... could I stay the night?"

"My, my. You're forward, aren't you?" She teases.

"Wha-no, ma'am! I just-"

"Yes, yes, you can stay," She sighs. "Don't want you vomiting on the... Captain's! carpets. Or something. BUT! I have a condition."

You both clamber to your feet and she latches onto your arm and whispers into your ear. When you hear her condition a flush creeps up your neck. Noticing this, Christina again breaks into giggling fits.

"Not too lewd for you, is it?" She asks, the challenge in her tone clear.

"No... ma'am," You sigh.

"Good. Now... move. That way. March."

Through a combined effort you both make it over to the bed, climbing on top but not quite managing to get under the blanket. Before you can try (and probably fail) to remove your boots you find yourself pinned to the bed.

Oddly, you're not complaining.

Letting out a pleased hum Christina cuddles closer, nuzzling your chest. She's asleep before you can manage a complaint, and seeing her now you forget what you were going to complain about.

Too weary to do anything else, you wrap an arm around her waist and let your eyes drift shut.

That night, you sleep peacefully.
