You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

While you and the others were at the art supply store, you ran into Citrine! Always happy to see you, she invited you and the others to visit her and Marius's home.

Though you did have a bit if a detour thanks to a certain person who was spouting a bunch of lies about Marconetti (and Celestino in particular), but you made it to your destination safely.

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

>"Umm, is your husband home?" Melanie asks. "I don't hear anyone else in the apartment..."
>"Yeah, that's because he's a weirdo," Citrine sighs. "Let me go and get him..."

As Citrine disappears through a doorway, the rest of you make yourselves comfortable.

"I gotta say," Nicolette begins, "this place is a lot more normal than I was expecting."
"...normal?" Luciana turns to her.
"Nicolette, that's rude!" Melanie scowls at her girlfriend.
"H- hey, I didn't mean it in a mean way," Nicolette says, holding her hands up in the air, "I just meant that this isn't what I'd expect when I think of 'an artist's home,' you know?"
"...oh," Melanie sighs.
"Seriously, I'm not so crass as to go to someone's home and start insulting it," she says, rolling her eyes.

Nicolette does have a point though... though you've only seen this dining room and the slightly obstructed view of the adjacent rooms from the open doorways, this doesn't really seem like what you'd expect a master artist's place to look like.

Then again, Citrine's probably the one in charge of the decorating and she's a pretty normal girl.

"I see what you mean," Luciana nods, "but the atelier's probably in a different part of the apartment. I very much doubt that Citrine would appreciate getting paint and the like all over the furniture and everything else."
"That makes sense," you nod.

Though now you're kind of curious as to what his atelier looks like...

At least wait for him to come out and say hi so we can get a proper tour of the place.

That, and it'd be so unbelievably awkward for everyone to walk in only to be confronted with hundreds of sketches of Citrine in various stages of undress strung up all over the walls of his studio.

Sure, it's nothing Reinhold hasn't seen before, but it'll make the next hour or so of small talk pretty rough on the rest of our group.

Citrine would probably forgive you snooping around a bit. After all, this is your first time visiting and you'd really like to explore...

...but doing that would be really really REALLY rude. Nope, you opt not to indulge your curiosity and instead stick around here with the girls.

"The happy family life, huh..." you say, smiling to yourself as you pace around the table.
"Hm?" Luciana turns to you. "Reinhold, did you say something?"
"Just thinking out loud," you reply. "It's nice to see that Citrine's doing so well nowadays, that's all."

Especially considering how bad things were just a few years ago.

"Feeling jealous?" Nicolette says, grinning at you.

"What you're not thinking about ditching the bodyguard life and shacking up with Luciana in a cute little place like this?" Nicolette laughs.
"I'll have you know that I am far more high-maintenance than that," Luciana smirks. "I couldn't accept living in anything smaller than your father's mansion, Nicolette."

And then her lips twist into a devilish grin.

"I suppose that Melanie's going to do just fine in that area, though..." Luciana laughs.
"W- what?" Melanie's gaze darts to the Princess.
"Well we -all- know that you're going to be moving in with Nicolette at -some- point," she says, slowly approaching the maid. "Surely Nicolette doesn't expect her special someone to be forced to work as a maid forever, yes?"

"C'mon, Luciana..." Nicolette says as she pulls Melanie away from her cousin, "leave her alone."
"What, I'm just curious..." Luciana pouts.

A chill runs down your spine as Luciana turns to you... of COURSE she'd try to drag you into this. But luckily, Citrine picks that exact moment to return with her husband in tow.

"Hurry up, Marius!" Citrine moans as she pulls him into the dining room where the rest of you are waiting.
"C'mon," Marius sighs, "you know I don't like it when clients are actually in the hou..." and then he actually looks at who it is that his wife wanted him to see.

"Holy crap!" Marius says with a wide smile. "Reinhold!"
"Hey," you say, waving to him.
"And you brought your friends, too!" he says, bowing slightly to the ladies. "King Celestino's niece... the Princess's friend... and Princess Luciana?" he stares at her.
"Uh." Luciana blinks a few times. "You both saw through my disguise kind of quickly..." she says, laughing nervously.

You can definitely understand why Luciana's more than a little bit concerned about that.

"A little change in hair won't throw me off that easily," Citrine shrugs. "I mean, you do look different like that, but I'm used to that kind of thing."

Then she turns to you.

"Reinhold, you remember Emeraude, right?" Citrine asks.
"Oh yeah..." you sigh. "She'd completely change her hair like every week."

Emeraude was one of the girls back at the brothel who never seemed to be happy with her appearance for very long. You kind of wonder if she's still constantly switching hairstyles even now...

"And I like to pride myself on never forgetting a face," Marius laughs. "Not to mention that her bodyguard's right over there... hello again, Mr. Takamaru," he says, waving to him.
"And hello to you," Takamaru replies with a nod.

None. Leaving aside that Granache currently has two of Celestino's children at their disposal, turning on your closest ally like that would be a bad fucking move for diplomatic matter. Especially since Celestino can just wait another century or two to marry his descendants to Marie's and achieve unification.

Well, Celestino wants to unite the two kingdoms, but it seems like Thierri is making it difficult, what with the only child who he isn't to keen on forcing to marry and the fact that he won't remarry himself. Y'know when Monique first got almost-assassinated by that devil child?
They said something like "You're too dangerous to let live" or something, did they a) already know he had a Sealed King and b) already know that there was a good chance Celestino would offer him Luci's hand.

Because if they did, that would point towards whoever hired the assassins being somebody trying to limit the number of strong connections that Marconetti can make by offing his unwed kids and the powerful people they may potentially marry and thus bring to Celestino's aid.
>>
>>34382319

I assumed it was just that Monique is a capable swordsman on his own and letting him witness the shady men running around town might come bit them in the ass but option a) is plausible.

Maybe Devil Children are among those who can sense a Sealed King, like the kitsune chick did?

I thought it was the other way around: The "You're too dangerous to let live" line only came out AFTER Monique used his player-character spideysense to notice the lurking assassin who the fuck actually uses rooftops for stealth, just stay at street level you retards, it's actually HARDER to spot you that way and proceeded to wreck his shit.

What I took from it was that the assassins were just doing their thing keeping tabs on persons of interest, then Monique drew attention to himself by way of stabbing them to death.

Volker's. Though it's worth noting that arch made a mistake about that: One of his explanations had Agnes as Volker's great-grandmother instead of grandmother.

>>34383059

That's the part that bother me the most. The guy who's behind this seem to have wasted a lot of resources with this total disaster of a kidnapping. Is he incompetent, insane, desperate (and thus picking a bunch of idiots to do his biding), or were all these deaths just according to keikaku?

>>34383102

1. I really doubt Karel can be considered a Princess when she's a bastard. Thierri (or Raoul if he come back) might have the power to make her one officially, but I doubt it.

3. Why the hell would Thierri give Karel a Sealed King? They choose their own master and it's not something that can just be given away as a gift.

Aquaman: "By royal decree, this random crossdressing girl from the next country over is now officially second in line for the throne, and also girls can marry girls."

And then he abdicated to Marianne and promptly fled the country in search of adventure.

"Sorry if I seem kind of out of it, I was up all night," Marius sighs. "It's really great to see you guys again, though!" he smiles.
"Likewise," Luciana replies.
"Yeah," you nod. "How've you two been since the last time I saw you?"
"Eh, pretty alright," Marius shrugs. "just getting settled back home and all after being away for so long."
"Yeah, I get how that is," Nicolette sighs.
"My morning sickness seems to finally be less bad, though!" Citrine says proudly. "Maybe the baby just didn't like Marconetti..."
"Citrine..." Marius slaps himself on the forehead.

Yeah, maybe she shouldn't have said that.

I do wonder what Emilio actually thinks of Karel's appearance. I mean, what with her/him being near identical to the girl he crushes on hard.

I realize it was never specified which King they were after, but there is writing on the wall. Two men, one of whom is from Marconetti, decide to go out to the ass end of nowhere, Granache, for a legendary sword.

Monique, a border guard based out of, and born and raised in Granache, goes off wondering because of his eternal asstrauma to losing his precious sword. He wonders around, but needs to stay relatively close to the country border he was meant to guard. He just HAPPENS to find a Sealed King.

I;m not saying that he went searching for the sealed king, nor am I saying that Volker and Adrien were specifically searching for Setsuranka. I'm saying that they were searching for Legendary Artifact, and didn't succeed. Meanwhile, Monikers finds Legendary Artifact.
The odds are too long for there to be two Sealed Kings in the same general area, both unclaimed.
>>
>>34383269

Official line of succession is

1. Marianne.
2. Raoul.
3. Angelique.
4. Sylvie.
5. Valerie.
6. Racquel.
7. Gregory.
8. Nicolette.
9. Guillaume.
10. Bernard.

>>34383305

I doubt Karel would try to get Emilio to pretend "he"'s a girl unless it's a Freudian slip thing.

Man it sucks to be Karel. Hanging out most of the day with the guy you crush on and desperately trying to help him win the heart of a girl who looks just like you.

Do really think Thierri or Raoul cares about shit like that?

>3. Why the hell would Thierri give Karel a Sealed King? They choose their own master and it's not something that can just be given away as a gift.

Exactly. Who is more worthy than Karel? She is his descendent / royal princess / badass swordsgirl. Has affinity with water. Shares same ideals of wanting to protect Marconetti/Granache, which was the land that belonged to Silvarios. If he's going to bond with or choose anyone, she's perfect.

"Don't worry, I don't take offense," Luciana laughs. "I remember back when Mother was pregnant with Elena, it seemed like the strangest things would set her off..."

>>34383517

"Well..." Citrine looks at Luciana, "...the King seems to have rooted out all of the traitors from the castle at least."
"Yeah," Marius nods. "It looks like there were a few guards from the traitor division that were transferred to other ones because of clerical stuff... Prince Alberto took it upon himself to go through the entire Guard roster from the past decade and investigate every single person."

Whoa, so the infiltration went that deep?

"Father actually told you about this?" Luciana asks, her expression deadly serious.

"...Grandma wasn't involved in any of that stuff, was she?" you ask, decidedly more worried than you were a few seconds ago.
"Nope," Citrine shakes her head. "Marius got a first-hand look at King Celestino's fighting skills but us ladies were safely away in Grandma's mansion when all that went down."
"Thank God," you sigh.

As long as those two are as far from danger as possible.

"I got to see waaaay more than I bargained for," Marius says with a wistful smile. "Reinhold, you ought to be really careful with how you treat Celestino's daughter there... he's a close friend and all, but not even -I- felt safe around him when he was set off," he sighs. "Same goes for the Prince, too."
"Yeah, Alberto's not the only one who takes after him," Nicolette says, slapping you on the back. "Be careful, buddy."
"Sure..." you say with a nervous chuckle.

You really want to ask Marius more specifics about what he saw back in Marconetti... but Luciana's visibly distressed over hearing about her father and brother fighting, and the others don't look much happier than she is about it.

Time to change the subject!

"So, uh..." you begin, "have you been up to any art stuff since getting back?"
"Art?" Marius looks at you. "Well I got a TON of potential clients during the party and afterwards..." he sighs.
"...and I'm in charge of managing his time since he's a total flake when left to his own devices," Citrine says, grinning as she elbows her husband.
"I'd be nothing without her, I must admit," he laughs.

Seeing them like this is really reassuring. Marius is a nice guy and Citrine's obviously super happy just to be around him and they work together in order for him to do his art... yeah, you're definitely sure that she picked the right guy.

"But yeah," Marius claps his hands. "Art!"
"Art!" Citrine says, laughing as she imitates her husband.
"Citrine's been working out rates and scheduling and all that while I take in inspiration," he shrugs. "Some folks want specific things painted or sculpted or whatever while others are just happy getting anything as long as I'm the one who made it..."
"That's what he prefers, actually," she nods.
"Yup," he says, kissing her on the cheek. "And Prince Randolf of Krassato wants a portrait of his wife done, too... I was actually willing to start on that first, but that seems to be on hold until the mess in Marconetti is settled."
"I think it'd be nice if he did a personal work next, though," Citrine says, closing her eyes and nodding to herself. "Get the artistic gears moving, you know?"
"Did you have anything specific in mind?" Luciana asks.
"Yes, I'm interested in knowing that too," Melanie joins in.
"I'm still just messing around, but I have a couple of things that I've been sketching..."

>Did you read just the story posts or the whole threads?

Started off reading everything, it was brilliant at first but then later on when everyone went full retard, I just read the story posts.

>And did you have issues with the pacing?

Nope, pacing was perfect. A little slow at times, but I like it that way. In fact there was so much more that could have happened but the pace would've probably slowed down to a crawl. The time skip sucked, I wanted to see Reinhold training with Arnaud. Also going off to Marconetti happened too soon, it doesn't feel like everyone should've known known each other that well and gotten along with each other to that extent after only a week of knowing each other.

>Because it gets brought up time and again but for me, going through the archives, the pacing honestly doesn't seem that bad. Yeah, it's long-winded but that's just how some stories are. I guess it's just a completely different experience when you're actually waiting for the individual story posts to be made but when I had a big backlog of threads to go to, I actually appreciated the detail and minutia Arch included.

Yep, completely agree. Slow pacing really suits this type of story. In fact should've been slower and more in depth but then everyone would probably want to kill me if I had my way :) And I don't mind the slow live experience too, it's been fun.

The princess has a sort of animal-based ranking system for the people around her.
Llama is her favourite animal.
>>
>>34384568
Oh God, I felt like punching my screen reading that and honestly, I don't think lashing out was justified. Rein needed to be called out on that bullshit and Marianne wasn't in the room when we told Elena that she could come along for the ride.
Which in itself was dumb because the players seemed to merge Luci and Elena's desires to join Reinhold to Agnes'. Luci was just angling to spend time with Rein, she didn't really care about Agnes and was happy enough with the ride, Elena didn't give two shits about spending time with Rein and just wanted to go see Old Swordie Lady, but then there were voices among the player saying "we need to treat both princesses equally", despite the fact that they both wanted very different things and that just bringing Elena over for the ride was like dangling something shiny in front of her face and then snatching it away.

>The way we handled Elena's expectations about Agnes was also pretty poor, though I think lashing at Marianne was passably justified.

Actually I didn't have a problem with that. It wasn't really that out of character for Reinhold, it's just that things didn't go the way we wanted. He wanted to help Elena, but didn't think things through. Yeah, he could have handled it better, but it wasn't that jarring or out of character like the previously mentioned Sylve and Luciana incidents.
>>
>>34384643
It's probably what I suspected when catching up. As a quest, when you're waiting for each individual post it might seem slow but when archive diving, where the story's already prepared, it reads fine.

>>34384633

You're adorable.

Marianne is kind of a misanthrope and has a ranking system for people, with animals illustrating how high you are.

Llama is pretty high up, but they're still not considered people.

Basically to Marianne we're a friend but still NPC.

>>34384651

Don't get me wrong, Rein was retarded, but Marianne just smirking when he was clearly out of his depth and then giving him a sermon was a shitty thing for a friend to do. Plus Rein needed to show he has emotions too and she can't just treat him as a prop for her own entertainment.

"Nah, it's fine," Marius laughs. "Giving my brother-in-law and his friends a tour of the place actually sounds like fun!"
"Umm, Marius...?" Citrine looks at him with a nervous expression.
"No, I put all of those away," he replies with an embarrassed smile.
"Thank goodness."

Not going to think about what they're talking about. Not worth it.

That's something else about reading it from the archives. Obviously, when you're helping to make decisions for Rein, there's a desire to do everything perfectly but when you don't have any agency over the character, it's fun to see him fuck up The peach-grab dance was when I first got really invested in the characters.
And as for Marianne smirking and then lecturing, she assumed Rein had told Elena that she could come along for the whole trip and if she was in the room at the time, might have told him that bringing her along for the just the ride wasn't a good idea, but she wasn't there. She didn't have any inkling that Reinhold wasn't going to let Elena in the house until he did it.
Plus, if biting back at Mari was a way of Rein showing her he had a backbone, maybe he should have done that when dealing with Elena in the first place, rather than immediately going to Marianne for help.

"Follow me, ladies and gentlemen!" Marius says as he spins around with a flourish and makes his way to the doorway.
"Now I'm getting kind of excited..." Luciana giggles. "I'll have to write to Father about this when we get back."
"Maybe we can convince him to do a portrait of Nicolette..." Melanie giggles.
"Ooh, that would be perfect!" Luciana laughs. "In a nice pretty dress..."
"Not funny," Nicolette sighs as she walks ahead of the other girls, following Marius through the door. You follow close behind, passing through the kitchen and a few other rooms before stopping in a large open area that seems like it consists of maybe half of the apartment's total area.
"Welcome to Atelier Lanzmann!" Marius says, extending his arms to either side as he shows off his studio.

Moss, please.
It's Marius' billions (literally billions) of lewd drawings of Citrine.
>>
>>34384919

This place... in a word, it's impressive. There are easels strewn about, all with half-finished paintings on them... the occasional sculpture, stacks upon stacks of used art supplies, and the walls are COVERED with sketches and full-color drawings of what seems like every thing under the sun.

And one wall is dedicated to nothing but portraits and (clothed) sketches of Citrine. You can practically feel the love coming from them, and it's extremely embarrassing.

"Sorry if it's a mess," Citrine says with an embarrassed smile. "I haven't gotten the chance to clean it since we got back..."
"You don't need to apologize," Luciana says as she migrates over to the Citrine wall. "This is the true state of an artist's workshop, so to speak..."
"Yes, it's very interesting to see in person," Melanie says as she and Nicolette try to make sense of an abstract sculpture.

While the others examine whatever it is that interests them, you (and Takamaru, surprisingly enough) follow Marius over to a table where he picks up a thick sketchbook.

"This is what I've been doodling in since we got back home," Marius says as he flips through it. "Dunno if I'll actually paint anything that I sketched in here, but it's the closest thing to 'what I've been working on' that I have."

He then flips through the book, passing through a few things that you...

...whoa, that's kind of morbid.

"Alright, here we go," Marius says, going past the picture that you got a short glimpse of and a few others until stopping at what looks like flowers or something.

I stopped working on that after Archelon told us that Luciana really isn't into sharing. There's only so much disbelief I am allowed to have while writing smut. "Uh..." you look at the sketchbook, "what was the picture that you just passed by?"
"Hm?" Marius turns to you. "What, you saw something that you thought was interesting?"
"Maybe," you shrug. "Umm, do you mind?"
"No, not at all!" he laughs as he hands you his sketchbook. "There's nothing questionable in there, so go ahead and take a look."
"Cool," you nod, flipping back a few pages until you stop at the drawing that caught your eye.

Yup. This is definitely morbid. Extremely so. A picture of a man... well, the upper half of one, anyways. He's suspended in the air by two chains connected to manacles on his wrists, and his lower half seems to be made of...

...is that stone?

"Clemens Daimler," Takamaru growls from behind you.

"Daimler..." Luciana scowls. "Mr. Lanzmann, where did you see this?"
"During that whole thing where they flushed out the leftover traitorous guards," Marius says, backing away from her, "your father had me stick with him and your brother since it wasn't safe for me to be by myself."
"Yes, you mentioned that earlier," she replies.
"So, umm... word got out that their over was blown so they ran to the dungeon and tried to bust out the Captain here," he points to the picture, "while they still had the chance. "So they killed the guy maintaining some kind of limiter spell, I guess that Captain was some kind of Contractor?" Marius shrugs. "He busted out after that and ran amok for a little while until we got there and Celestino took him out with some kind of light shard spell... cut him clean in half and that's how the scene in the picture happened."
"And then they chained him back up?" you ask. "How's he even still alive?"
"Stone body," he replies. "I guess it can maintain life functions as long as the person using it keeps the spell up, and that guy was a Contractor so yeah."
"At least they recaptured him," Takamaru says.
"Yeah," Marius nods. "I'd heard stories about how strong Celestino was, but seeing him do that stuff in person is an entirely different thing. He took care of that entire situation without any of the guards' help, too..."
