Your drones file out of the corvette as it comes to rest in the outstretched arms of its dock. On one side is your scout corvette, its skin peeled back by the docking pylon’s spindly construction arms to better reach its shattered bones and torn tendons within. On the other is the half-finished skeleton of a new corvette, its hull sleek and pulsing from the grafting of sinew bulkheads and muscular hull plating. A shuttle is quick to pick up your new guests and send them to the growing prison built around the remains of the Angel. The few rooms you have are quickly filled and your workers begin efforts to expand the complex without delay.
Your throne room is filled to the brim with eggs, clustered on top of each other in neat little heaps to give your drones room to move in the maze of unborn drones. Despite your busy day you keep a close eye on the new arrivals, twenty five in total, most with varying minor injuries.

Meanwhile your drones listen in on the transmissions of the Union search party on Raligha, your pods silently watch the traffic of traders and settlers drift about the orbit of Calpamos, and you sit in silence as the crew of Gibson station beams re-runs of some human sport to the small colony of Kaltara.

Finished Research

>Extended nature study
Fast
Using your new drones you should be able to quickly cover the remaining areas of jungle and study the rest of the local life, especially the various forms of worm that seem to fill the soft soil of the area.

Current Research

>Union culture research
Medium
Designate several thinkers to read through and disseminate the information within the samples of human literature found within the Clarke. With the wide range of topics covered this should reveal some bits of interesting information on all manner of subjects.

>Carbon liquid
Medium
This strange substance appears to be alive, and reshapes itself by assembling itself into various crystalline structures as needed. You're still not sure if it was trying to attack your ship or if it was simply reacting automatically in some fashion. An extensive battery of tests should reveal more regarding the substance.

You watch through the dim lighting of the hive as the humans sit or pace about in the large holding area your drones had carved out for them. Most are in good health, although several suffered various injuries during your attack. They appear to have made a makeshift medical area near the back wall, collecting what supplies their suits provide to tend to those most injured. The human you had briefly spoken to still lies unconscious, along with the captain she had been arguing with.

>Isolate Dr Vaughn
>Leave her for now

In the jungle of Raligha you listen as the search team continues to find little.
"Move to the next grid line."
"I can't see anything under the treeline. You'll need to search the area on foot."

You can still hear the occasional drumming of the natives in the distance.

>>

Yea and you know what
I bet QD hasnt really thought of what half those things mean for us in upgrades or story purposes
so right now we can shift resources on to more pressing things like ships and units
The 2 limit gives the man time to plan
no amount of thinkers is gonna change that
>>
>>34373355
Seconding isolating and interogating the good doctor.
>>
>>34373374
Too many.

Also, we need more troops, and more guns for those troops. I suggest we lay 100 warriors. This will cost us 800 nutrients, and bump our upkeep up by 400.
>>
>>34373570
It's really not.

A more balanced mix of normal Thinkers and Quantum Thinkers in more modest amounts would be more sensible.

Because Quantum Thinkers are creative, which helps with innovations like bioweapons an cryogenic weapons, but doesn't help with dissection and reverse engineering other people's tech. And we do more of the latter really. So half and half is good.

Maybe 50 normal and 50 quantum.
>>
>>34373570
Add in more workers and farms to compensate for their upkeep and you have my vote

>>34373428
>Isolate Dr Vaughn
QD, Since we already have eyes in the Raligha system in the form of the pod, would it be possible to have a stealth corvette jump in to a location in the system where the Union wouldn't be able to detect the radiation burst, like behind a planet? Or does it not work like that?
>>

However Thinkers can be used to boost rolls which is one of the reasons I want some.
>>
>>34373597
Sounds like a good plan, Raligha really showed how understrength the hive is compared to other forces in the galaxy. Perhaps we should consider laying more collusi as well?

I think early on it was said they could boost production as well? Probably only at a large scale, but even a 5% boost is significant.
>>
>>34373692
Just make more shock troopers, and either make 1 shock trooper for every 5/10/20(depends on what you guys want)
>>
>>34373695
Our issue was that nades fucked us up, and we didn't know how to fight a siege.

We need anti-grenade methods (getting warriors to jump on a nade, anyone?), and more flame throwers and grenade launchers in our warrior's hands.

>>34373742
I think QD said 1 shock trooper can boost the rolls of 20 warriors.
>>
Guys I think we should use the Slip Drive when we head to Raligha again.
>>
>>34373690

>Isolate the doctor

The door flexes open and several warriors march into the room surrounding a pair of workers. The humans give your drones a wide berth as they move to the back of the room. One of the humans stands nervously at attention. A look of confusion crosses his face as your drones march by.
"Hey, what are you doing?" He asks as turns to watch your drones. "I'm the senior officer of this expedition and I-" Your warrior quickly turns to face him with its blades held up. The man jumps back slightly before continuing more slowly as your workers move towards the doctor.
"I am Major Michael Randolph. I'm the ranking officer of this expedition and I would like to request an audience with whoever is in charge here."
As your workers start to pick up the doctor several of the other humans move in.
"Wait! she's still in critical condition, you can't move her!"
Your warrior unsheathes its blades as it chitters its massive mandibles. You can hear a growing commotion in the room as your drones move back to the door.

>>34373576

One, granted, though starting early is usually a good idea.
Two, no reason we have to answer questions. Just send a speaker to speak a sentence or two and leave.
Three, that depends on both how we treat them and how diplomacy with the Union unfolds over the next while. I don't like limiting our options.
>>
Swarm (50 fighters) – A hangar filled to the brim with dormant drones, which are awoken and released when needed for combat. They are linked directly to the parent ship, and cannot function away from it. The fighter drones themselves are each a cheap and disposable craft designed to pose a threat with sheer numbers, and can each be equipped with a single weapon. Together, they can form complex maneuvers to intercept attacks with themselves, attack hostile targets, ram into targets and perform patrols in close proximity to the ship. When not in use they are kept in hibernation, reducing their cost to a bare minimum. Cost represents the cost of a single hangar bay and its associated swarm. (600N 300M)

Your drones quickly take a small sample and you call in Huey and Dewey. Their understanding of the devices is more from rote memory than any understanding of human biology, but they quickly set the tank to perform a full battery of tests before a warrior escorts them back to their maintenance duties.

Please roll 1d100, best of 3

You watch from the small sensors of the cell walls as the disgruntled Union officer beats the chitinous door in frustration. He quickly gives up and returns to pacing near the center of the room between several others.
"How long until you think we can expect a rescue party?"
The Major chews his thumb for a moment before responding. "Until someone comes looking for us? A fleet should be on the case already. If you mean when someone will find us, that's harder to say."

>Leave them alone

Your preliminary findings don't seem to show anything unusual, although you are still not very well versed in human biology. The current extent of your knowledge has been the charred and half-eaten corpses and a single, highly modified individual who is still held deep within your hive.

A blip in your mind calls your attention to Theseus. "I have received additional information requests for the monitor satellite directing it to enter a geostationary orbit." You watch as the satellite slowly drifts into a new position above your hive. "The satellite has also received a new security code, valid through the next three days."
>>
>>34374439
>>Send a speaker to dismiss their concerns and attempt to calm them
>>
>>34374842
Why?
>>
>>34374902
>"I have received additional information requests for the monitor satellite directing it to enter a geostationary orbit.
The humans are getting pretty suspicious.
>>
>>34374902
huh we got their attention then
best prepare a welcoming party
>>
>>34374902
We should have cloaked the docking pylons.
>>
>>34374902
>"The satellite has also received a new security code, valid through the next three days."
Oh dear.

We're gonna get an audit.

This is the worst time to be building anti-orbital weaponry. Even if it shoots them down, they'll have working FTLComm and that alone will raise suspicions.

3 days is enough time to tear down the docking pylon and hide fucking everything though.

The docking pylon should only be built in a 1km ravine somewhere on the other side of the planet.
>>
>>34374902
Damn, may want to start construction of more ships and defenses.
A question, would it be more effective at this point for a wolf-pack of stealth frigates or a pair of highly visible cruisers? and is it possible to put ships into a state of hibernation like normal drones to save on upkeep?
>>
>>34374966
Firstly no one has seen them yet, secondly wasn't it said that would just end up being a giant weird blurry thing instead of being cloaked?
>>
>>34374977
a wolf pack along with the fireships that were described earlier
right now we need numbers and we aint got the time to build up
>>
>>34375007
But wouldn't that be good enough for them not to be spotted from spaceships?
>>
>>34375015
How long does it take us to build ships anyway?
>>
>>34374966
You can't cloak structures that attach to the ground like that. It has to be a seamless discrete object, otherwise you get that blur where it touches the ground.

Also it's goddamn 10 times the size of the Corvette or something, too expensive.

The answer is to build a different docking pylon on the far end of the planet. There is no reason to have the pylon for building ships next to the *known* location of the hive.

Go build one somewhere very far away, deep between two mountains or something.
>>
>>34374967
Wait wait wait. I have two ideas:

We hide our shit in the docking pylon, and we fill it to the brim with flying drones. The drones fly around and shit, and just plain act like they're doing important shit.
They see it and think "Oh, they just have a flier nest." Bam. No suspicions.

And the other thing is we need to build some grenade launchers for our troops.
>>
Hi, recently discovered Hive Quest, and I've been lurking waiting for this iteration. Anyways.

I say we grant his request for an Audience, and see what information we can wring out of him, and maybe if we reassure him it will calm the humans in the area.

Also, what about Lyle? He's been reduced to a head and a torso and stuck to a wall, and he hasn't changed from that position for 7 or so threads. Perhaps we should do something with him? A highly skilled human merc with a reputation for professionalism and discreet operations will be useful should we ever feel the need.
>>
>>34375024
No.
>>
We do hit and run on the first wave
we beat them back and can replace our losses a hell lot faster
just need to buy time and entrench our system so yeah some orbital weapons on our moon base to
>>
>>34375028
Corvettes have been in a day. The bigger issue is that we need to build more pylons to properly house the ships.
>>
>>34375024
It can't be 'spotted' from space ships through the planet's thick cloud cover already.

The problem is if they're actually *coming* here, they will definitely coming surface-side. If they only needed to see what they could see from orbit, they wouldn't need to come --- they could use the monitor satellite.
>>
>>34375046
Alternatively, we setup the pylon so that it shoots flame everywhere. And then we have small things everywhere that also shoot out fire.

When/if they land and check it out, we praise them as fire gods, and ask if they like our tribute to their power.

As you contemplate the news your pod in the Koenig system detects the arrival of a single union ship. The voice of a woman barks through the radio to the Calpamos station.
"Calpamos, this is the Dauntless requesting resupply, on mission to G-426 for satellite maintenance."
"Roger that, we have your acquisition requests and your supplies are ready for loading in berth five. We are sending tugs to pull you in."

The ship drifts slowly towards the station and is met with a number of small, plump shuttles that dock to the bulky vessel and slowly guide it into dock.

>>34375217
Yes, that Clarke. It may still be recognized as the Clarke, but it would apear damaged and worn due to the ways you repaired it. It looks much worse then it is.

Good idea, though they may freak out when they notice the fuck-huge docking pylon on the ground before they dock with the satellite.

>>34375703
To add: it could be hidden as a malfunction and the detonation of nuclear weaponry in orbit would give us reason to have been /aware/ of the satellites armament and therefore capable of using it as political leverage should negotiations open with the Union. They'd look like idiots for accidentally exploding themselves too.

Wait.

Waaait.

The nukes!

We took away the nukes they had onboard.

They will notice they're missing unless we make some fake ones and stick em in their place!

There's also the possibility their "maintenance" was code for coming with a code from parliament to authorize the launcing of them, but that seems extremely unlikely. They have no evidence to motivate such extreme measures yet.
>>
>>34375293
You quickly respond to Theseus.
"What traces have you left in the satellite?"
"I would be able to leave it in the exact state I found it in, leaving hardly a trace."
"What about the areas you have obscured from the transmissions?"
"They would still be obscured by the atmosphere, which may be blamed for some of the discrepancies, but certainly not all of them."

As you discuss the situation you take a look at the status of the Clarke. It has no weapons or shields, but it is fast and maneuverable. It has room for six point defense mounts and a spinal mount, as well as a number of missile launchers, although all of its ammunition has been expended.

Plasma Lance for the spinal mount and the point defense will be autoguns

75 warriors. 15 equipped with fire sprays, rest with thorn launchers.

>>34375862
We don't have shields, but our ships are less delicate and don't implode. Also, the latter.
>>
>>34375862
No, but your ships are able to be easily repaired, and are much cheaper to replace. Union ships rely more on shields to mitigate damage due to their relatively light armor and high costs to replace and repair.

You do not currently have shield technology, although you could gain it if you were to acquire a Union ship intact, or purchase it from the Unity.

It looks, for lack of a better term, like shit. That has nothing to do with the quality of the repair work, just that your metallurgy techniques and construction methods don't have the same focus on a fine coat of paint and coat of wax. A human would likely look at it and wonder how it's still functioning, but not think it was altered by aliens.

I propose an idea combining these. We trojan horse it, fill the Clarke with warriors but also arm it, and have the corvettes standing by. We lure the enemy ship in somehow, then either board it or cripple it instantaneously with all three ships. Then we plunder.

I don't wanna fight if we can get away without it but... it's probably going to end up as a fight. Not great chances of being able to take em out before they get off an FTLcomm message either. Ah well.

>>
>>34376261
I don't know what the point is of the Clarke ghost ship MASTER RUSE QUEEN plan.

We can afford basic cloaked Corvettes--without psionic relays, they can rely on the scout ship nearby to control them.

All with the plasma lance on their Auxiliary mount.

We can make 12 of them, at 4 a day.

They can all launch their plasma lance at once and cook the enemy ship before they have a chance to do anything at all.

That's the only feasible way to silence them I can see.

Attacking them with warriors will just ensure an SOS gets off over FTLComm.
>>
>>34376261
We need to fill the Clarke with our sedative pheromone. Let them wander the ship for a time and see if we can take them as quietly as possible.
>>
>>34376439
I would rather maintain the ruse.

If they find evidence of Unity here, ok.

But the hive should remain hidden entirely.

Tear down the docking pylon, go full Madagascar, shut. down. everything.
>>
>>34376442
What is gonna be believable about this at all?

Why is capturing this ship worth giving up all attempts at stealth, we can capture one of the Union ships that are at some of those uncharted systems like M-199 later.

Capturing one at our home system instead of deceiving them is way too risky though.
>>
>>34376471
If we want to stealth insta-kill them we can just use our corvettes. The issue is that if we start shooting them, they might explode instead of us getting our hands on their tech. Because unions ships are silly and explode when damaged.

The other issue is that if we kill it, a bigger fleet will get sent to investigate later anyway. it'd just be attacking them for no gain and the same consequences, effectively.
>>
>>34376439
I'd rather keep the ruse for as long as possible .
>>
>>34376622

so again shut it and prepare for war
>>
>>34376592
Peeps are preparing because it doesn't look like our ruse is actually going to be sustainable.
>>
>>34376439

Maintain the ruse, install cloaking field on the Clarke and conceal its presence entirely.

Construct fake nukes with the same weight and appearance and stick them into the satellite.

Tear down the docking pylon and construct a new one on a different continent.

We turtle up, and try the Clarke plan only if they won't leave. If they are trouble, THEN we uncloak it and try the ghost ship plan.
>>
>>34376724
Yes, but preparations that spoil the ruse just by doing them are counterproductive.

Shit's like in the cartoons, "How did you know?" "YOU JUST TOLD ME!"

You can both prepare for war *and* maintain the deception until it's clear the other party is gonna be trouble, at which point we can do the plan.

Just cloak everything.

>>
>>34376776
Just cloaking everything doesn't seem sufficient to me though. It's the damn satellite. I'm tired of it.
>>
>>34376592

It only has to be believable until they dock with the Clarke and open our tin full of murder bugs.

And at this point I think our cover as stone smashers is as good as blown. All they have to do is compare the images they have from the satellite with what they're actually seeing, and it won't matter anymore if the docking pylon has been hidden our not. They will know at that point that the satellite has been tampered with even if we replace the nukes we pulled from it. If they are allowed to leave the system, our cover is as good as blown. Best take em down now and look for some way for to distract the Union from the disappearance of one of their ships or blame it on the Unity somehow.

As you make early preparations for the eventual arrival of the Union ship you take a quick note of the level of activity. You manage to pick up a short transmission to the Dauntless scheduling its launch for the following day. You have noted a steady increase in local traffic as shuttles move in and out of the station, cluttering the space around the massive floating city as they move in or out to the fledgling colonies.

Meanwhile, on Raligha your drones have been slowly exploring the alien structure, being very careful to not trigger any potential traps or unknown technology. The entire mountain seems to be hollow; a massive honeycomb of alien metalwork and hexagonal tunnels intertwined in seemingly random patterns. The tunnels are interspaced with the occasional chamber, most of them empty or nearly so. The rooms clearly once served a purpose, but whatever equipment granted it that purpose has long since withered away or been looted by some other party.
Outside the drumming has become louder and more frequent. The small village at the mouth of the cave entrance has swollen to a far greater population than before, and it loud howling and bellowing from the hollow trees echo through the valley.

"Hey, did you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
"That howl, almost like a didgeridoo."
"Who the hell knows, man? We've been looking all night and all day for survivors and have nothing to show for it. I somehow doubt they would be having a cookout."

Meanwhile Theseus continues to adjust the orbit of the satellite, coming to rest in the southern sky with its gaze on the hive. Theseus sends the requested data by you to ensure it is properly modified to remove the heat signatures of the Clarke and your corvettes as they continue their construction.
>>
>>34377042
"With the dramatic increase in ground activity, the tampering may be obvious even from orbit, if they bother to look close enough." Theseus says. "However, a malfunction in the satellite's payload may not give them the time to perform such a scan."
You wonder for a moment. You should still have time to prepare.

>Launch a surprise attack and attempt to destroy the Dauntless, framing the Unity or satellite malfunction.

What? Theseus OS is the reason it wasn't blown earlier. It's the reason the satellite hasn't tattled that the USV Clarke is still alive and not nothing more than a crater, prompting an investigation last week.

It sounds like Theseus can cover up his presence entirely just fine, according to him.

>Attempt to deceive the Union and maintain your cover.

Your corvettes are still not ready, although soon their repairs and refits will be complete. You schedule them to launch as they are ready and cloak within the asteroid field and wait for instructions. Theseus appears slightly disappointed. "I had hoped to get some more action. Exhibiting the inherent flaws in Union political procedures and watching the results are always entertaining. Still, if they move along with no issue then no sense in forcing a conflict. Will you be reloading the satellite, or will we just hope they don't bother looking for it. I could claim they are still loaded if they only use the exterior access terminal, but otherwise..."

We should be able to intercede should they attempt to launch them and as the Clarke demonstrates, our productions methods produce fundamentally off-looking materials compared to human-made junk. I doubt we can make any fakes.
>>
>>34377748
"How effective would fake warheads be in tricking them?"
Theseus thinks on it for a moment. "Any lack of radiation would cause immediate suspicion, and the casings are highly particular. It would be quite difficult to construct a decoy payload, especially on such short notice."
"What about a diversion. A warning of danger or radiation?"
"No." Theseus is rather clear this time. "Radiation shielding would let them ignore such a warning, and a warning of critical damage would likely result in more attention, or result in an extended schedule for repairs. Even worse, once they had opened it they would be even more concerned over the false reports."
"And what if they were to be reloaded and be used?"
"I would be able to intercept any such command, or return fire with them. The possibility of them unloading the warheads themselves may be a potential danger, however."

Totally can. We can ambush a warship later on, board it, and steal their nukes. Which would be lower risk than not putting the nukes back in the satellite in this instance.

The chance that they take the nukes is lower than the chance that they notice something is wrong if we don't put them back. Even if that weren't true, the stakes are way way higher for not putting them back. If the nukes' absence are noticed by them, further scrutiny that we can't dodge will come at us. Losing nukes is barely a pinprick compared to union attention.

Ambushing a ship in another system would be far preferable to having a ship mysteriously disappear, or worse broadcast an SOS, in our system.
>>
>>34378392

I assume he means opening wireless communications to rehack the satellite/give it commands. But we have a FTL psionic relay hooked and wired directly into the Clarke, so Theseus and the Queen can talk via that interface freely even while they're here, right?

You would need to remove it for your current plan to work, as it looks like a space slug with a USB port jammed into the radio. Theseus has embedded a copy of himself in the satellite, although he usually maintains continuous contact between the Clarke and the monitor so they are essentially the same.
>>
>>34379083
Current plan? We don't have a psionic relay inside the satellite, just the Clarke.

Also what ground activity does Theseus determine is detectable from orbit? Just the hive's docking pylon and the ships (corvettes, the Clarke) docked there?

The Dauntless embarks in schedule from Calpamos station and begins to accelerate out of system. After several hours of steady acceleration it vanishes with a wink of radiation as it wraps itself in a bubble of twisted spacetime.
You suspect the Dauntless will arrive in mere hours, and only one issue remains. What to do with the Clarke.

Theseus takes the clarke and quickly accelerates out of the system and envelops itself in a blanket of twisted gravity as it passes the light barrier.

Not long after the Clarke vanishes from space, your cloaked corvettes detect the distinct burst of radiation from the Union ship. You note that Union vessels seem to emit much more radiation than your own when exiting FTL.
The Dauntless is slow to move, accelerating at a crawl as it drags itself across the system. It transmits the security code almost immediately, but it takes long hours to finally reach the planet. As it nudges itself into orbit with the grace of an Excavator in a pit of grease you see a small ship emerge from a hangar bay near the bottom of the hull.
"This is gunship two-zero. Dauntless, do you read?"
"Loud and clear two-zero. Atmo is thick down there. Hot-drops will offer landing guidance."
"Roger that, Dauntless. Will await the go ahead. Moving to holding pattern."
The small craft fires a number of small jets and nudges itself down and to the side. Shortly after four small metal pods erupt from the belly of the ship and streak down towards the hive.
"Dauntless to two-zero, you are clear for approach. Report any sightings and avoid contact if at all possible. Just stop by and say hi, fellas. We shouldn't take too long on our end."
"Copy." Another voice can be heard over the mic from the gunship. "You don't need to tell us twice. Place is a shithole, what I hear."
"Don't go saying that to any locals, private. In fact, just don't talk for the rest of the trip."
The mic cuts out and the ship descends.

Bellow, from the surface of your hive you watch as four red hot canisters break through the cloud cover, each one streaking a small chute behind it and shaking from the force of a set of retro rockets. They burst open shortly before impact, release a set of bulky humanoids that each impact the ground at a force you would expect to kill a human. Your patrolling sniffers hide in the trees not far from them as they quickly move to a clearing.
"Landing beacon is set. LZ clear."

The gunship drops down and in moments releases a large rectangular vehicle that quickly spins its wheels in the mud before starting to move across the plains. It comes to a stop not far from the site of the original camp where you first found the Clarke's crew.
"Dammit, somebody wake up Scotch." You hear over the radio as the vehicle's door swings open and a number of humans clad in dark armor rush out with weapons at the ready. Their uniforms shift in hue until they match the mossy plains and they quickly assemble a perimeter around the vehicle as the gunship ascends back into the air.
"Camp is clear, sir."
"You don't need to call me sir. It feels weird." You recognize the voice. It's difficult to tell at first, but as your sniffers watch from the treeline you see Lee stumble out of the vehicle, bumping his helmet visor against the roof. He is followed by another man you don't recognize, although both of them are wearing similar uniforms, more ornate than the soldiers.
"We should be careful out here. The airborne predators are a real issue."
"No worrying about animals, man. Some dino-bird can't stop a marine!"
"I thought I told you no talking for the mission."
"Yes, Sarg."

You watch from your corvettes as the Dauntless creeps to the satellite and swallows it into the hangar bay.
"Two-zero, we have the monitor. Don't drag your ass down there."

The Union marines are far more impressively equipped then the soldiers you have seen so far, especially the drop troopers. Lee looks to the other human, both of them appear to be unarmed and their suits are far more smooth and sleek then you have seen before.

>>34380850
Of course. I had assumed you did not intend to use them when you sent the Clarke out of system. They are in the hive. A small yellow bar is emblazoned on Lee's chest plate, while the other is unranked.
"So what now, sir?" Lee asks.
"You tell me. We're in uncharted waters here. The only reason we are even here is because you and your crew mates bumped into these people by accident, and you know them better than anyone. I'm here as an observer, as a Second Lieutenant you are the ranking officer here, no offense to the Sergeant."
A man steps forward and removes his helmet to the shock of Lee and several others. He takes a deep breath before responding in a raspy voice straining from the spores, "None taken. Any excuse to add one more to the collection."
"Collection?" Lee asks. A private leans in and whispers as the sergeant places his helmet back on.
"Sarg wants to taste the air of every world known to man. If it has air that is. We don't think even he's crazy enough to try out vacuum."

The marines quickly assemble a small set of dishes and fence poles, which you note they do not turn on.

Your drones embark towards the landing zone It takes some time to reach the camp and as your drones move in your sniffers and flies observe from the edge of the jungle.
"The receiver is online, sir." One of the marines says. The unranked man claps his hands at the news. "Excellent! Keep it recording, who knows what complexity could be found in the noises of the local life here. What about the gravitational scan?"
"Nothing, sir. The Dauntless says the planet is clean."
"Disappointing, but expected. Just keep recording those astounding flyers for now."

The marines spot your drones as they hike down to the camp site. Lee quickly dusts a thin layer of spores from his suit and moves away from the marines awkwardly. "Ah, hello. Long time no see. I... guess."

Okay, while we wait.

It might be worthwhile to start designing drones while we still have life in the thread.

First, we want a drone design with seeker pods. Seekers are good for firing at enemies without losing cover, and for hitting enemies hiding behind their own cover--it would have been good with the cave standoff. As would flooding the cave with poison gas, but never mind that.

Does anyone else want some decent stealthy attackers, which we lack? A cheap one and an even cheaper one.

"Hello." Your drone chirps in response. It seems to startle him slightly. "You said you would not return. Why have you come back?"
"Ah, well. It's a bit of a long story."
"You are here with warriors. Big weapons. Why?"
"Whoa whoa hold on. You have some really nasty predators here, ok? We just came too... Stop by and say hello. You know?"
"No."
"Ah, jeez. Well um."
You see the unranked human walk up behind lee, a beaming grin shows through his visor and he places a hand on Lee's shoulder as he interrupts, shoving him to the side. "Greetings, I am Jhon Smith. What my associate here is trying to say is that we have been noticing an increase in the dangers of this area of space, and we wanted to stop by and make sure it wasn't effecting you. You haven't noticed anything... odd, have you? Floating spheres, big cylinders in the sky, big explosions or things like that?"
Your drone continues to watch Lee in silence. Smith exchanges an awkward glance with Lee as and he speaks up again. "Uh, this is... my friend. Smith."

Yeah this.

If they really, really press us, we could say that a drone was captured and killed by a human, who then disappeared.

But only if they really extract that info, like they were told to expect there was a specimen capture mission here two weeks ago.
>>
>>34382246
it wouldn't be useful for large scale things, but it might be useful in dealing with scouting parties. Your speaker simply stairs at Lee as several long seconds pass in silence.
"Uh, we have seen a lot more dangerous stuff around lately and wanted to make sure you were ok. Have you seen anything like big cylinders or floating spheres that shoot things?"
"Only when humans are here."
Smith's smile quickly disappears as Lee gives him a slight shrug. Smith takes several steps back and crosses his arms as Lee continues. "Well that's good... I guess. Look, normally we would never intrude like this, or at all, but since we already met once we figured we might as well try to get to know each other."
You can see the frustration slowly growing on Smith's face as he spins his pointing finger in a small circle as Lee slowly speaks. Lee continues. "So... I mean if it's ok, maybe we could discuss some things like, what it's like here, or how you survive? You know, basic stuff. Cultural exchange."

"Oh, right. Well like I said, we already met you by accident, so we figured the damage was done. Technically waste isn't just from the parts of food that we can't digest. Much of physical waste is cellular byproducts that the body can't use anymore/things that become toxic if they remain. A lot of your shit is the unusable parts of broken down dead blood cells for example. A cellular system which produces no harmless internal byproducts that require excretion would be fantastically advantageous. lifespan. We could pretend drones die off after about two summers, instead of being functionally immortal. (The planet has two summers a year with that elliptic orbit.)

We collect flora and fauna from the jungle, hiding from predators. Who we have hopefully *fully cataloged* now with the recent ecological survey, so we won't be caught in ignorance of something we should know exists.

What dangerous predators exist, what poisonous spore plants exist besides the ocean walker, etc.

And we can't even risk doing anything that will show large heat signatures from the activity like constructing new corvettes.

We might as well shut down everything that might give us away, as long as the teardown process itself isn't detectable by heat radiation or sound.

We really should do that. Maybe during the hottest part of the day so heat signatures are really washed out.

>>34382734
"Acceptable."
Lee leads your small group of drones back to the perimeter of marines as they unfold the thick plating of the vehicle into an impressively sturdy looking shelter, all things considered. The door swivels open and half of the marines file inside.
The marine sergeant bellows out as they gather into the shelter "Alright, ladies! You're about to be treated to some of the best damn stew this side of the Antonine Wall! My own recipe." You can hear grumbles from the rest of the marines.
"Sarg, can I just go eat some of that mushroom tree?"
"Can it!"

The shelter extends out one of the walls and creates an enclosed space of thin plastic just beyond the entrance. Two of the four drop troopers move their massive bulks into the awning and their suits unfold from them. Each one is covered in small metal ports along their arms and down their spine, with reinforcing across their shoulders, much like Lyle.

Your workers stand watch outside with several marines. They pass your drones awkward glances from time to time, but otherwise maintain their vigil.
"I swear it's looking at me."
"It's looking at everything you moron. Compound eyes."

As the day comes to a close you look over your drone population and think of what else you need. You have boosted your population tremendously, but you still have room to grow.

I see it the other way around. Hypodermic claws have low penetrating power, so they're *only* worth putting on small drones really, for stealthy sneak attacks rather than raw power.

Since small drones with combat claws aren't as good as chopping someone's head off, best to give them something that's just as effective big or small.
>>
>>34383374
Thats the entire idea. These things will be equipped with the strongest toxins and bioweapons the hive can produce.
>>
>>34383393
The 3N upkeep version is acceptable.

I'll add them to the official list for production then

General consensus for new drones appears to be
>90 Thinkers
>90 Quantum thinkers
>100 Warriors
>15 Shock troops

There is also some support for additional flies. You currently have 10

Listing to two designs because this drone can work without having improved senses, but it would work better with them. It could be teamed up with a fly for the better senses, but the design is really suited for being abandoned in enemy territory.

I believe during the Raligha raid, or at least around that time. They were included in a bulk order along with a bunch of other drones.

I was being conservative.

I wanted a Large carrier drone originally, too.

They have poor penetrating power, which is even worse on small drones. On a medium drone, they could be expected to pierce "soft" armor with decent reliability. Small variants, I wouldn't expect even that much.

Yea, it feels like running a cattle auction.

I think that's all for tonight. At your current rate of research you should be done by next thread.
I'll try to stick around until we 404 as always for any questions or comments, but feel free to leave feedback on the Ask.fm or twitter any time.

We're really overdue for researching human diets and adding the ravenous prisoners to our hive upkeep.

Could we please lay a few more collusi? We only have two and they really are a huge advantage on an open battlefield.

I was wondering earlier why hydrogen refueling was a thing in the Union colony since they don't require fuel for FTL, and have an infinite energy engine...but, duh. It's for the fighter craft that are non FTL, and that are aboard and deployed from FTL ships, right?
>>
>>34383557
>>34383578
We do need to diversify our farming crops. Not just for us, but our prisoners as well.
>>
>>34383593
>Mandible: ??? (construction maybe)
No, Combat. I think earlier in the thread it was mentioned the queen has combat mandibles.

As is sensible, with the dangers of finding a place to lay.
>>
>>34383557
We really need more heavy artillery though. 4 more collossi should to the trick but oh well

Thanks for the thread anyway QD, you make Sundays/Mondays fun.
>>
>>34383576
I only see one thread on it and it has seemed to be a little fickle to me.

>>34383585
That they are. It didn't seem to have that much support at the time, but a quick vote wound't hurt while we are all still here.

>Add Colossi to order
>Don't
>Postpone vote for start of next thread

>>34383623
Always a pleasure.
>>
>>34383603
No we don't. We're just gonna synthesize the calories, amino acids and minerals they require from our current food stock.

We aren't about to start farming native human photosynthetic life here on Planet Silent Hill, so we're obviously gonna have to derive it synthetically.
>>
>>34383593
Queens don't have advanced psionic.
>>
>>34383613
But, the queen stopped that thinker from bleeding to death with her saliva. Sounds more like the construction to me.

>Add Colossi to order
>>
>>34383648
I think they know that. That's why it's a fake queen.

The advanced relay is there so it doubles as the single point of failure through which we control that planet's hive.

Personally I'd hide that relay somewhere else and just stick the giant headdress on the fake.
>>
>>34383640
>>Add Colossi to order (5)
Thanks for the vote, Quest, 'preciate it.
>>
>>34383684
We can do both. That way if they kill the "queen" we can still control the hive.
>>
>>34383640
>Add colossi to order

>90 Thinkers
>90 Quantum thinkers
>100 Warriors
>15 Shock troops
>4 Colossi

>>34383645
It isn't that hard actually, since you process all of your food into a nutrient paste anyways. It would just be a change in the ingredients.
>>
>>34383716
That's the point of not having a relay on the queen at all. There's no purpose to having it on her.
>>
>>34382946
You're right, I'm getting hungry too.
>>
>>34383640
Add them to the order.
>>
>34379408
>After several hours of steady acceleration it vanishes with a wink of radiation
Wait, it takes that long to go to warp?

I guess the USV Hope really wasn't in any danger of escaping us.

>34380378
>You note that Union vessels seem to emit much more radiation than your own when exiting FTL.
Subtly reminding us that we can't bring the Clarke back into the system without drawing a lot of attention.

Also, the satellite is still transmitting even though it's in their hangar now, right?
>>
We're going to need a second speaker soon, might as well just lay it now
>>
>>34383783
The Dauntless appears to be very slow. By far the worst rate of acceleration you have seen in a Union ship so far. By comparison the Hope was comparable to the Clarke, which was impressive in speed even the Theseus.
>>
>>34383797
agreed
>>
>>34383797
Oh yea, we do don't we.

>>34383720
I've noticed that the Linear Particle Beam appears to be better in every way than the Autocannon as a point defense weapon.

It has higher range, higher accuracy, and higher damage. So it's even better at detonating a nuclear warhead before it gets anywhere near the ship.

Is there any disadvantage I'm missing here?
>>
>>34383783
And no, the satellite has stopped transmitting shortly after being taken into the Dauntless.
>>
>>34383873
They're hella bulky and don't miniaturize well. The listed stats assume a certain size of mounting.

Autocannons also get that accuracy bonus against small stuff.
>>
>>34383873
Technically yes, but autocannons receive a bonus to targeting smaller craft or missiles, especially with explosive ammunition, while Particle beams suffer a large penalty if used in a such a small weapon mount. It would still be effective, though.
>>
>>34383912
How many plasma lances does it take to cook a Union corvette in a few seconds if fired all at once?
>>
>>34383593
fake queens should probably be explosive. like, crater blasting explosive.
>>
>>34383731
I think having the relays in space on clocked pods is good But, I'd like to have a back up just in case. Though with the way we've been making are ship's that isn't a problem.
>>
>>34383934
Of course it would depend on the situation, but assuming decent rolls and a surprise attack, probably around three or four corvettes with Lances would be able to take out a Union Corvette without giving it enough time to react.
>>
>>34383989
You didn't answer last week, but.

You say the Taidarens are experts on all the things inside and around the Angel.

Does that include Lyle's cybernetics?
>>
>>34383950
once we have nuclear tech down, we could give them an implanted thermonuclear warhead that detonates upon death/command.
>>
>>34383989

So what did the completed research open up?
>>
>>34384106
Oh yeah, the local ecology thing.
>Extended nature study

We at least have a catalog of the local species.

Did we find another apex predator, or is its reproductive cycle still in the spore budding stage?
>>
>>34384027
Ah, I think we dropped off the board as I was trying to type that.
They understand the engineering aspect, but not the medical aspect. They can take care of the machine part, but don't understand how it attaches to the body, how to implant them, or how to maintain the implants themselves, all of which would technically fall under personal hygiene, which Taidarens also know little about.
Same with the tanks. They know how to work them and which buttons to press for what, but have no idea what exactly it does or how it works beyond which wires go where. They are crafty electricians and great engineers, capable of jury rigging something from just about any pile of junk, but they don't know anything about medical technology beyond the very basics.

>>34384106
3 new potential toxins, which I will add for next thread, the worm samples, which I will also try to have ready by next thread.

>>34384136
Locally the centipede is the apex predator of the jungle, while the flyer rules the open plains, plucking up anything it can fit in its gaping maw that is unlucky enough to be out in the open. They usually prey on berry birds and other flying creatures from the jungle, but will also follow the herd beetles and prey on the animals that inhabit their backs and feed on the moss and fungi that tend to grow from the beetles' carapaces.
>>
I was thinking, if we do explore the ocean, we could create an underground tunnel to the bay so the eventual drones-with-fins-for-swimming we get don't have to flop over land to the beach.
>>
>>34384264
Kinda like a moon pool?
>>
>>34384183
I don't remember where we came across the centipede. What are it's defining attributes again?

Hey could you take the drone designs proposed this thread and place them in the unofficial design portion of the drone sheet?

How feasible and useful for stealth is it to dismantle the docking pylon and everything else noticeable?
>>
>>34384402
You can always feel free to contact me on twitter or leave questions or feedback in the ask.fm any time.
>>
>>34384433
You may want to remove Crab dissection from the research list.
>>
>>34384431
Depends on the time frame you are looking for. It would certainly take more than a day to tear down the pylon, cover the foundation and make it look like natural landscape again, as well as covering the hangar doors in the side of the hive.
>>
>34381721
>What about the gravitational scan?"
>"Nothing, sir. The Dauntless says the planet is clean."
Looking for the Clarke and the gravity of its quantum power tap? Or a Unity ship somehow within the atmosphere.

>Outside the drumming has become louder and more frequent. The small village at the mouth of the cave entrance has swollen to a far greater population than before, and it loud howling and bellowing from the hollow trees echo through the valley.
Heh, it's like someone saw the Virgin Mary and the rumor spread and brought pilgrims looking for another glimpse.

Or like seeing an alien or UFO. Which I guess is also literal in this case.

Yeah basically. Though I imagined it as a sloping cave at first, with half of it above water.
