Ask Languid anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

“You’re going to tell me where I can find Scott and Alan Gracie,” says Isaac.

Simon is all cool in response. “Who?” he asks. Though you can feel that he’s feeling more confident now that he knows who Isaac’s after. He’s also a little more mad, probably because his arrest was because of someone else.

“He’s getting pumped up,” you warn Isaac over the phone, taking careful note of the particular flavors of emotions you can feel from outside the interrogation room. “Like. He thinks he’s got something you need, probably. He’s rallying around that.”

Isaac doesn’t give any indication that he heard you. “’I’ve been watching you for some time,” says Isaac. That’s a lie, but there’s no way Simon can know that for sure. “I decided I would give you a chance to make this a little worse on yourself, before they lock you up. You see, I can find them anytime I need to. But doing that would deprive you of the chance of helping me.”
>>
>>34317601

“And why’d I want to help some lunatic who sees monsters under the bed?” asks Simon, smiling cockily. “You can’t do anything for me.” He gestures around himself to the walls of the police station. “I’m done. It’s finished. I’ve accepted my fate.”

You can feel though that he’s beginning to doubt his resistance, perhaps on a thin ray of hope. “That’s it,” you tell Isaac. “He wants to believe you, a little.”

Isaac sighs. “I thought you might say that, son,” he says. He points to the one way mirror, and you. “There’s nobody out there Simon. This is just you and me. You’re right – I’m not a police officer. But I managed to set up this meeting in a police station without a single soul around to see it. I even had you arrested to begin with.”

Simon scowls. “You tipped them off? You wait until you see me speeding or something so you could get me thrown in jail?”

“The only person I needed to convince was myself,” says Isaac. “I knew the only way to get you away from the things that would one day kill you was to give you some time away to think. So if I have the power to get you into this situation, do you really think I can’t reduce your sentence?”

Simon is impassive. You know, however, that he is torn within himself about whether or not he should keep being obstinate.

“Just a little more,” you tell Isaac. “He’s doubting himself.”

Isaac shakes his head and stands up. “I understand you don’t want to help me, and I respect that. I didn’t think you would.”
>>
>>34317610

He gives Simon a long, steady look. “Before I walk out that door,” he says, pointing at the exit, “is there anything you want to tell me? Anything at all. I want to help you, but I can’t unless you tell me something.” He smiles meaningfully. “Let me help you, son.”

Suddenly, Simon breaks down crying. “So you’re going to get me out of this, right?” he asks.

“I can make it better. I can’t make it go away,” Isaac replies. He waits for Simon to speak.

It’s enough for Simon. He talks. “They gave me a package once,” he says. “They must have just got it in the mail – it had shipping label – Pan Pacific Apartments. I thought… I think that’s where they live.”

Isaac gives him a respectful nod. “That’s all I needed,” he says. “I’ll do what I can for you.”

He leaves, allowing Simon to sit alone and cry by himself.

Coming out of the door, Isaac closes and locks it behind him. “I feel like if there was a referee, I’d be disqualified for cheating,” he says, grinning at you. “That was the most I’ve ever heard that boy talk in one go. Nicely done, Sierra.”

You smile back.

“Yeah, I’m awesome and cool and stuff,” you say humbly, as you and Isaac walk back toward the exit. “I thought I was going to have to be all scary or whatever, but we were in and out of there in the time it takes most people to make a sandwich.”

“I know this isn’t in your life plan, but you would make a great police officer if you decided to get into law enforcement,” Isaac informs you.

You briefly imagine yourself as a lady cop with those high cropped pants and hokey sunglasses and the whole shebang. You shiver in disgust. “Yeah, no,” you say firmly. “Anyway. What’s so bad about the Gracie brothers anyway? What’ve they been doing that makes them public enemy number five or whatever?”

“They’ve been robbing banks with magic,” Isaac answers. “They do it so there’s no evidence of them being there, but the lack of evidence is evidence all its own. Once the media gets a hold of the story, you can be sure there’s going to be a few people out there who will understand what’s happening and take action to stop it.”
>>
>>34318001

You make your way out of the station and back to the jeep. You get the feeling from the way Isaac’s holding himself that he’s not planning on rushing directly to the place Simon told you about. In fact, he’s probably going to drop you back off at home first.

“So uh. We going back to the house?” you ask, climbing into the jeep along with him. Isaac’s driving.

“You’ve been a great help,” Isaac says. “I can handle everything from here.”

Well, not really. I have no interest in these guys beyond their Hellborn status and I want to see how they are.

Killing them would be really bad for Sierra's mental health, I think.
>>
>>34318098
>Killing them would be really bad for Sierra's mental health, I think.
Maybe if we just decide to kill them out of nowhere while they beg for their lives or something, but I don't think there's going to be all that much muh trauma if they decide to be assholes and attack us/Isaac.

Let's just, uh, leave. Yeah. We can totally go back to the Hallow's warded-out-the-ass house and play guitar or something.

I hope so! Reason why I'm worried about mental damage from killing them is because they're Hellborn. Fingers crossed, I guess?

Didn't get no mental damage from Trevon and he was Hellborn. Whether or not they act like massive assholes has more to do with it than race.

“You bringing anybody else? I mean, I don’t really know if you’re the type of guy a couple hellborn will listen to,” you say.

“I’ll give Waldric a call,” Isaac says. “He can be persuasive in the right circumstances.”

“I was actually kind of hinting that I could come along,” you say. “I mean. I used to be a lot like these guys, you know? Maybe I can help. Maybe if they see somebody like them they won’t like, freak out and stuff.”

Isaac considers your offer for a minute, and then starts the car. “You can come along on one condition,” he says, holding up a finger. “You do everything I say, when I say it. Understand?”

You buckle Zelathis onto your belt. “Got it,” you say.

--

You park by a nondescript white sedan, a street down from the place. Waldric leans on the wall nearby, wearing a pair of designer jeans, sunglasses, and leather jacket. He puts his smartphone away when you and Isaac come over. “You brought Sierra?” he asks Isaac.

“I brought myself,” you say.

“This is well within her capabilities,” Isaac replies. “What have you found out?”

Waldric jerks his head in the direction of Pan Pacific Apartments. It’s a mostly ghetto looking place, and certainly not somewhere you’d want to park your Ferrari around.
>>
>>34318997

“I called management. They don’t have anyone under the name Gracie living there, but that’s hardly surprising,” says Waldric. “Luckily I came across this.” He brings up his phone and shows a picture he has up on the screen of a couple heavy-looking guys maybe a little older than you. “We can get someone to tell us where they live, go in, and have a nice, civil discussion.”

“Probably need to have somebody watch the back,” you say. “They could bolt if somebody warns them.”

“True,” says Isaac. He looks at Waldric.

“It might be wiser for you to take up that duty,” Waldric replies. “I doubt the appearance of Isaac the Demonbane will inspire confidence in someone who worked closely with Nabuth.”

>Whatever. I’ll watch the back. They see a demon they know and a demonbane knocking on their door, they’ll probably get they’re not in for a smiting.
>Waldric’s right. I mean, they’ve probably heard all kinds of horror stories about you, Isaac. I don’t know if it’s a good idea for you to be the most visible thing. They’re more likely to chat if they’re just doing it with a couple demon-ish people.
>Well all I know about these guys is they rob banks and nobody can stop them. I don’t think now’s the time to take chances, just to seem nice. I can flash my horns if they’re iffy, and Isaac can be a tank if they try anything.

Isaac told us to let him call the shots, so let's be a nice girl once in a while and let him decide. Or them. But Isaac should be the top tactical authority, so yeah.
>>
>>34319282
Thirding since I personally don't really have an opinion.
>>
“He does make a good point,” you say.

Isaac doesn’t want to agree with the argument, but in the end he has to. “If you going with Waldirc gives us the best chance of a peaceful resolution, then that’s what we’ll do,” he says hesitantly. “The second anything happens though, I’m not going to hold back. If they run or try to fight, that’s it. I’m not risking anything more by having them running wild through the city.”

You don’t doubt him for a second, and you can tell Waldric doesn’t either.

“Then we’ll be sure to see that doesn’t happen,” Waldric says.

“Okay, so now your minds are all made up and stuff, let’s go,” you say, edging toward the apartment complex.

“Sierra?” says Isaac.

You turn around, briefly. “What?”

“Be careful,” he says. He eyes Waldric. “I’m holding you accountable.”

Waldric laughs lightly, though there’s a rockiness beneath. “Don’t I know it. Let’s go, champ,” he says, following after you.
>>
>>34319733

A few minutes later, you and Waldric walk into the complex. The lobby is mostly crap, with well-worn chairs and outdated magazines strewn about. The place smells like cigarette butts, and a couple of the overhead lights are burned out. A bored looking guy in his thirties sits in the office behind the counter, openly playing solitaire on the computer. He gives you no notice.

It strikes you that if the office guy is friends with either of the Gracies, he might give them a call if he thinks something fishy is going down. Waldric walks over and pulls up his phone, you not far behind. “Hey, you know where I can find either of these guys?” he asks, leaning over the counter and showing his phone-photo.

The office guy doesn’t even look away from his solitaire. “Nope,” he says.

Waldric’s expression goes flat. Getting brushed off is probably his number one pet peeve. You can feel the smoky anger bubbling beneath the surface.

You step out of the blast zone.

Waldric narrows his eyes, and an overpressure of magical force fills the room. The lights flicker overhead, a few light bulbs dying in the process. A cold chill creeps into the room out of nowhere, and you barely keep yourself from shivering, though you don’t keep yourself from getting goosebumps. The computer the guy’s screwing around on flickers, and then the monitor pops and shuts off.

“What the?” asks the guy, hitting the power button. It seems, however, that the computer has died. He rubs his arms against the sudden cold, and looks over at Waldric. “D-did you just feel that?”

The Belphegoran by your side frowns, and his voice has a dark tone it in when he speaks. “As a matter of fact I didn’t,” he replies dispassionately. “Now if you’re not too busy, I was wondering if you could tell me in which apartment these gentlemen live.” Waldric shows the guy his phone.

You see a look of recognition on the guy’s face, but he doesn’t answer immediately. He looks up at the tall, dark, and handsome guy standing before him. “Who are you?” he asks suspiciously.

“Let me show you,” says Waldric. He extends a hand and taps him on the forehead.

There’s a flash of shock and confusion from the manager, and then he suddenly goes completely limp and slumps out of his chair. He collapses to the floor in a disjointed heap. He lets out a shuddering groan from where his face is smashed into the floor.
>>
>>34320940

Waldirc peers over the counter at him, a sharp smile on his face. “If you want to get up, tell me an apartment number,” he says.

The deliciously sweet feeling of fear is thick in the air. “What’d you do to me?” asks floor guy, his voice coming out slurred.

“That doesn’t sound like an apartment number,” Waldric berates him. “Do I need to remind you who I am?”

“N-no, no no,” he stammers, managing to roll onto his side. “It’s – they’re in 225,” he says, almost wimpering.

Waldric relaxes the muscles in his neck for a moment, and tilts his head to the side a degree. You feel a snap of energy, like a high-tension wire breaking. The disempowered manager lets out a sigh of relief and seems to melt into a pile of jelly, clearly out of breath.

>Sierra will probably have trouble keeping her tentacles to herself
Stop being so lewd.

“Thanks,” says Waldric, walking on toward the stairs.

Kind of creeped out but also intrigued, you follow.

Waldric’s anger is turned to a sharp sense of satisfaction. “They always come around in the end,” he says. “Now, when we get to their apartment, they’re likely to have some type of defense in place. Don’t make any sudden moves until we can see what we’re up against.”

As you head up the stairs, you can’t stop what just happened from bouncing around your head. “Okay, let me just like, take a second to say that was like, all badass and cool as hell,” you tell Waldric. “Like. When are you going to show me that kind of stuff? Is it hard? Because I bet I could do it.”

You totally could though. You can do all kinds of other stuff already.

Waldric pauses at the doorway into the second story and gives you a calculating look. “With a little push in the right direction, I don’t doubt that you could,” he says.

Looking for the apartment, you start feeling kind of on the edge. You have only a fuzzy idea of what you’re up against. (+3 Stress: 6/100) “So about the defenses, what kind of defenses are we talking about? Like, walking statues, or like, magical fire traps and like, three challenges and a riddle or what?”

Waldric pauses by a corridor junction and peeks around cautiously before proceeding. He moves with the grace of a panther or something – his steps are light and premeditated, and he looks as if he could go any direction at any time without warning. You carefully follow him, feeling kind of clumsy by comparison.

“Illusions, likely,” he answers quietly. “But I’m more worried about explosives.”
>>
>>34321555

Right. Explosions are bad. Unless they’re your explosions. Then they’re bad for everyone else.

You pass apartments. 222. 223. 224. 226.

“Now just one minute,” you say, stopping and looking back down the hall. There’s something vaguely wrong about the space, now that you’re concentrating on it.

Waldric walks over to the wall and runs his hands along it, closing his eyes and concentrating. “It should be around here somewhere,” he whispers. “If I can find the enchantment I can destroy it.”

First thing to do is check if our sense of hearing or our sense of smell pick up anything interesting and give us any useful information for finding them or breaking this illusion. We might smell any explosives they have set up as well. Turn on Shadow Sight and see if it perceives the Illusion differently. Also, use our Landmaster Life Sense. We're pretty close so we might be able to ping them that way.

>Assist.

And if we don't make some headway with us helping Waldric then try for busting in with shadow bullshit.

You start feeling along the walls, half hoping you bump into the door that way. “What do I do?” you ask.

“Try to feel for the edges of the illusion,” Waldirc tells you. “It won’t blend perfectly with the wall. Or just focus on the ambient energy. There has to be some power holding it up.”

You try to do as Waldric directed for about half a minute before you give up. “You know what, this is dumb,” you say under your breath. You sit down and cross your legs and close your eyes.

You can hear Waldric cease his search. “What are you doing?” he asks.

“I’m the landmaster, dammit,” you say, your voice peaceful. “I can just feel where they are if they’re inside.”

For the next few minutes. You gradually extend your senses outward, focusing on the life within you and the life around you. You pick up Waldric – he has some sensation of belonging here, but it’s faint at best – and then focus past him. You feel people milling around in their apartments. Everybody fits in. Like, they’re a part of the city.

But then you ping something that doesn’t feel quite right. Or rather someone. You open your eyes and point toward the disturbance. “Bingo,” you say.

Waldric goes to the point indicated, and touches it.
>>
>>34322157

Suddenly, the hall seems to snap like a rubber band before your eyes. And then, quite inexplicably, you’ve moved a few feet to the left, and right across the hall from 226 is apartment 225. The paint on the door has big scratches along the front of it, and big red letters reading ‘FUCK OFF’ have been stenciled onto the front.

“I feel like they don’t take many visitors,” Waldric observes.

>So what, now we knock? I mean, somebody’s home.

Obviously, before we do anything make sure we aren't smelling anything out of place, or sensing any weird magicky things on the other side. It might give us some idea of if there's a trap waiting.

You get up and consider the situation. “Okay, I’ll like, unlock the door, and then go to the other side to make sure there’s no traps, and come back and let you know what’s up,” you say.

“Or,” Waldric replies, “you could go to the other side, check for any defenses, and then let me in.”

That may be more efficient than what you’d been planning. “Or that,” you say. “Just a second.”

You go to the wall about six feet to the left of the door and get on your stomach. Then you execute a commando roll through the edge of where the wall meets the floor. (-2 PP: 31/33) You come rolling out onto a grungy rug in a lightless bathroom. Somewhat grossed out, you quickly get back on your feet.

You make a little bit of noise on accident when you bump the counter and knock a bottle of deodorant onto the floor, but you don’t have any indication anyone heard you.

The smell of wet towels and Listerine struggle for dominance in the enclosed space. Also, you can hear voices in the apartment.

“-knows. What matters now is that we have the money,” says the first guy. He sounds big and thick-skulled, but not necessarily stupid.

“If the rat would pick up his phone, we’d already be in business. We just need one more day.” The second guy also sounds big, but he speaks with more fire than the first.”
>>
>>34323011

You open the bathroom door a crack and peer out. You can’t really see into the main room where the party’s going on, but then again they can’t really see you, either. You look to the front door, on your right. There’s like, five padlocks and bolts set upon the door. Somebody’s paranoid. But then again, they’ve just been infiltrated by a shadow demon that can walk through walls, so maybe it’s justified.

You look up and see a shotgun carefully mounted on the wall is rigged to fire on anyone who opens the door.

You try not to chuckle at the grittiness of the idea of the shotgun trap, and carefully unhook the little pulley-fishing-line assembly that’s hooked to the gun’s trigger. You could probably procure it if you wanted, but you’d have to cut it out of the tape holding it in position with your claws or something.

You ignore it for the time being – you’re not really here to shoot people anyway. This is an intervention. You focus on the door, trying to pay attention to what you’re doing rather than listening to the details of the people talking.

You move down the locks one at a time, feeling increasingly panicked as the seconds tick by. First off, it’s hard to unlock the things. Second off, it’s hard to unlock them without jostling them around and making a bunch of noise. (+4 Stress: 10/100) (-2 PP: 29/33) You get down to the second to last lock – a big fat padlock – but you can’t seem to make the tumblers budge. They’re too damn big. You scowl with impatience, grab the tumblers with the darkness, and force it open. (-1 PP: 28/100)

It clicks and pops open with a notable snap.

You hold your breath. (+2 Stress: 13/100)

The lock? That works?

I had been working under the assumption that SoS didn't actually tear through material, it just imparted some kind of anti-life energy into the thing the SoS'd weapon hit.

If we can SoS rip the lock, then let's just do that.
