I'd like to preface this post by saying that this thread was inspired by a dream that must have only been the result of habitually browsing this board.

A lot of games have clothing as part of general equipment, whether it be your caster's fancy robes, your fighter's street attire, or your cleric's holy vestments. A lot of games don't treat this as armor, or even encumbrance, and it gives no real mechanical benefit in many games.

Because of this, some characters might be tempted to just take it off and go without, if they need to. Has anyone here ever done that in their games, and if so, to what benefit? Also, who among you has had or played a naturist/nudist character?

One moment in which a party member went au natural was during a Microlite20 Campaign. The wizard (an old fuck styling himself as The Silver Alchemist) zapped a giant spider to death, and, out of disgust for arachnid viscera, decided to go without his robe and undergarments until he pilfered a loincloth from a fallen orc.

I am not sure why exactly he did that; I just assume that the character was weird due to being an old dude, and that the player was wanting some shits and giggles

(And yes, before you ask, I am well aware of the "Bulletproof Nudity" rule from GURPS Action, and I find it hilarious. Also, the pic's from a Drawthread from a few weeks back.)
>>

My first 3.5 character was a naked 'barbarian" (as in the perceived culture type) sorcerer. Males earned adult clothes through rites of passage as a Warrior. My sorcerer linked the idea that Warriors cannot use magic, and have clothes so that if he wanted to keep his magic, he must not wear clothes.

Int/Wis dump stat ahoy.

No benefits, just RP funnies.
>>
>>34257759

I'm currently writing a story of a Fighter (with the bloodline of a famous Archmage) learning Shadow Magic. However, to properly use and internalize it, he has to practice the somatic bits of in the buff.
>>
>>34257805
Why is nudity required for somatic components?
Does he have to flex his dick in verious positions?
>>
>>34257759
3.5? There's a feat you can take were war paint is your "clothing"

You pretty much have to be naked to.
>>
>>34258291
Was it in the first 3 books? Cos this was way back.
>>
My fighter once went nude while sneaking around a fortress full of bad guys looking for us, but only because I was ripping off Brock Samson really hard with that character.
>>

>>34257696
I've considered the idea.
Maybe some kind of shaman/tribe could have magical tattoos that need to be visible to be used, so they wear minimal/no clothing.
>inb4 magical realm
>>
>>34258271
Helps open up his mana flow; makes it easier to get the motions down and be able to cast magic more effectively.
>>
>>34258380
Why did that not help any other caster then? Or does every caster run around in the buff in this world
>>
>>34258413

This case is a fighter who's very inexperienced in using magic himself, and the removal of clothing is more of an opening up for him. It's meant to help him get more comfortable with using it.

He's often wearing more restricting clothing, which kinda hinders what he can do.
>>
>>34257696
During a game of Deadlands, we had two shamans that had to get nekkid to summon the spirits. They were also old as hell, so there were some good laughs to be had at the table.
>>
>>34258497
So, is the difference between wearing undergarments and being naked THAT much a difference in generating ki/energy/man-lust? He could be wearing casual clothes and probably experience the same level of oneness with his powers.
>>
>>34257696
I played a homebrew where magic was absorbed through light. Pretty much every caster went around nude and shaved, or very close to it.
>>
>>34257696
My Fighter only wears tiny underpants while fighting because he does not want to dirty his clothes, but never full naked.
>>
>>34258528

Well, the setting he's in consists mainly of people who view clothing as a formality, rather than a necessity.

It's like practicing skyclad in witch circles. It just helps the flow.
>>
>>34258563
>who view clothing as a formality
This is getting pretty creepy. Is it at least a tropical/arid setting without significant temperature changes?
>>
>>34258563
so, a magical realm then
>>
>>34258591
Something like it.

That said, he only does it in the bare to start off with, and starts to work at varying levels of encumbrance until he's able to work at full armor without many hang-ups.
>>
>>34258591
Even in tropical and arid climates people use(d) clothes whenever possible unless textiles were at a premium. Protecting your privates is a matter of practicality, not social convention.
>>
>be druid
>lol what are clothes
>get cursed
>become a lich
>GLAMOURS HO
>what are clothes
>>
>>34258717
Haha, no. Currently living Amazoniona natives just use a piece of string to keep their dicks up, because apparently floppy dicks are unsightly.
Humans walk around jungles completely naked just fine.
>>
>>34258717

I actually have a race of aliens who managed to adapt for a lack of textiles through gaining more resilience in their dermal regions by way of a thicker skin and some denser hair.

The also lived in hive-like hexagonal structures due to the fact that the planet they lived on having very strong climates most of their calender year. What little textiles do grow, they use for things like bedding and furnishing textiles.

Their equivalent to clothing is a series of tattoos which they obtain as children following a coming of age ceremony in which they have to endure the outside world and find their spirit animal.

I took inspiration from the Beasts from Phantasy Star Universe.
>>
>>34258824
>I took inspiration from the Breasts from Phantasy Star Universe.

>>
The only time I've played as a nudist character it was a lizardfolk (or rather it equivalent). He couldn't comprehend why "softskins" are wearing clothes, as for his race it was a matter of personal pride to show off well-groomed and healthy scales, which indicated that he lived in good place and had hunting grounds so full of animals that he could slack and clean himself.
>>
I took Compulsive Skinny Dipper as a flaw, not knowing my GM set the game in fantasy-Venice.

And that is why you always ask about the setting before playing.
>>
I almost considered doing Nudist Quest.

I just don't know how it'd work outside of Kill La Kill
>>
>>34259672
Have it run for only up until the protagonist gets into their first combat encounter, or until night falls. Whichever comes first.

And, since we're talking about a game that is set in a traditional medieval society and NOT an obscure tribe in the deepest heart of the soft, warm jungle, we can assume that textile is not so much of a premium here, especially since "clothing is more of a formality".

Basically, clothing is a key part of civilization for anywhere you can step on rocks or face a cold breeze, and anywhere you will find plants you can weave together or hides you can cut from corpses.
>>
>>34260004
Still shows that it's perfectly valid for a tribe to run around ass naked.
Hell, supposedly the Celts fought naked. And that's Europe.
Just don't do what this person did. >>34259900
A friend of her gave more details in another thread. Supposedly she was trying to seduce everyone for benefits and was obnoxious in and out of game, not just about nudity.

I had fun playing a monk that was usually naked, he would only put on clothes in town. He didn't usually wear clothes so that they wouldn't get messed up in battle, and I forgot to say after battle, "I get dressed" so nudity became his thing. As far as magical realm goes I didn't bring it up because to my character it was normal, everyone else is responsible for where they look.
>>
>>34260098
>we can assume that textile is not so much of a premium here
I don't see why a society that doesn't use much clothing would make enough to keep prices low regardless of whether the reason for less clothes is climate or fiat.
>>

I'm writing a story where one of the main characters has this as part of back-story.

>Young child orphaned at the age of six, along with his older brother and younger sister.
>Adopted by an eccentric, highly-paid and extremely experienced archer/assassin, who decides to adopt the three children, hoping they will become his successor.
>Only the six year old shows talent as an archer and has an uncanny habit of accidentally sneaking up on people and hiding.
>Four years of archery, camping, hunting and weapon-making training later, boy grows to age 10.

...

>One day, after going to sleep, the boy awakens in the middle of a grassy field, completely naked and alone.
>Soon after he awakens he is attacked by wild animals/barbarians who chase the boy. He outruns and outmaneuvers his assailants, and tries to set up camp somewhere in a deep forest.
>As time passes, the boy makes his own weapons and tools for hunting and killing. As he travels around the towering forest and expansive fields that make the area, the skyclad youth realizes that he is not anywhere that could be considered his home realm. He is in another dimension. Another world. Alone and afraid. Most importantly, he is vulnerable, weak, hungry. But not stupid.
>Spend the next fives years in stealthy bloodshed and constant fear. Hunting, killing, trapping, skinning, foraging, looting, sometimes even torturing. Anything to find out more about where he is and about the people trying to kill him.
>Through the years of savagery and paranoia, the boy forgets his name, family, friends, or his past. All he knows now is survival and the look in a man's eyes when you shoot the life out of him.
>>
>>34259178
I've read in a book some indigenous tribes are like that. A Catholic missionary couldn't get to them until he ditched his cassock. Apparently the tribesmen though he was hiding some deformity under it. Only after he's shown himself naked and let them examine him they truly let him into the tribe.
>>
>>34260288
Anyway, I just want to know a few things.

I'm thinking of having this place go through four seasons. In winter, he would wear a white fur ensemble to blend with the snow, a cloak of leaves in autumn, and be completely naked in throughout the harsh summer.

What kind of psychological ramifications would this kid go through in this kind of lifestyle? I don't know if he would forget his past and his own name in five years.

Is there really a function for loincloths or fur tunics?
>>
>>34260226
>I don't understand how supply and demand work

Anon, please. The "premium" refers to the easy of production - if clothes are relatively easy to produce, then they will be produced to fulfill the basic human need of comfort and convenience.

Even in a fantasy culture where clothing is considered bad due to reasons, which by the way runs counter to every real world culture where clothing is used as a sign of wealth and status on top of its practical purposes, laborers, soldiers, athletes etc will use clothing if it'll aid them in their tasks - and only go buff in social situations.
>>
>>34260420
>if clothes are relatively easy to produce
It's not. It never was before the industrial revolution. The only thing that ate up a greater amount of man-hours in the medieval period was food, and nothing else came even remotely close. Without a need for massive amounts of clothing, all those fields of sheep wouldn't exist. All those women who learned to spin and weave from their mothers wouldn't know what they're doing. It would be an esoteric craft profession, and clothing would therefore be expensive – as it historically was, to be sure, but expensive enough that the poor would never get any rather than that they might have less outfits than days of the week.
>>
PCs being completely nude?
No, we do have a barbarian that doesn't usually wear anything that isn't useful.
But magic items, boots, and belts/backpacks are useful wherever and so are other clothes depending on the climate.

Now our current setting is basically standard fantasy nations slowly colonizing NotSouthAmerica so there is more than a bit of nudity but it's mostly a background element.
Additionally anything that can be worn can have armor enchantments so there is a bit of skimpy (cloth) armor or other stuff like body paint or jewelry that but other than the barbarian and that time where we got a jar that could create three batches of body paint with really good enchantments per day and no one bothered to ask if you could wear something over it for four sessions, most to the party is clothed for the climate
>>
>>34260526
Since this whole thread from the start is about fetish and not games, let's put it straight.

Humans wear clothes. If they don't, they have to be so fucking primitive they barely qualify as humans. It really takes to be some remote tribe on God-forsaken small island without any spare resources AND tropical climate to abandon clothing, made from fabrics or anything else, including animal hides and foilage. You can count such occasions with fingers. So please, stop insisting that humans going bare is something we barely avoided. Don't confuse porn with reality.

I had one weird instance in which a wizard had her robes destroyed by fire, my wizard's robes were covered in owlbear blood, and another wizard took off their robes to make us feel more at ease. So three of us were just chillin in our birthday suits for a while, and I forgot to have my character look for more clothes afterwards. Later that day, my wizard got promoted to a high office in the local Mage's Guild (where all this shit was going down)... completely in the buff.
>>

It's stupid and contrived as fuck. Make as well just handwave all explanations as natural talent.

And a 6 year old can't be an archer. They don't have the size or strength to use a bow.
>>
>>34260739
But it's true. You can't find a post-iron civilization that eschews wearing clothes, because clothes are excellent for all the little and big things in life. Whether it's staying comfortably warm, keeping yourself safe from minor injuries, getting yourself some more carrying capacity, or even just demonstrating that you're better than those other guys, clothes are important to civilized life.

Can you name any situations where being naked would be an improvement?

Never had a PC like that, but one of our campaigns had a recurring NPC angel who went around in the nude all the time as she assisted our party in our holy quest. It was mostly played for laughs due to her being oblivious to nudity taboos existing and our party composed of five male clerics preferring to avoid the topic altogether.

Although one of them married the angel in the epilogue

PTSD, psychopath, paranoid schizophrenic, probably multiple personality disorder (or whatever they're calling it now), extreme issues with social skills, illiterate, uneducated, probably can't speak much (if at all). >>34260936
And that's the improvement? They were practised bare, because it was a celebration of human body. It wasn't practical by any bit. Ever tried running with your penis dingling all the way around? Or jumping? Extremely not-practical
>>
I've only done this once with a character. She was a "witch" in a sense, and certain powerful rituals required going nude or "skyclad" This was the case of much hedge magics, but in her case it was to embrace the power of her "husband" who is a powerful demon. She was one of his many "wives" all of the witches of her coven were, and their bond was marked as tattoos all over the body.

This wasn't played as magical realm, she's actually cover herself up quite well, so mortal men would not covet her, and she would often speak in the stead of her "husband." to the party about certain actions.

Nobody in the party actually believed her husband to be real, more a symbol of her coven. Their faces were priceless when she summoned him to destroy the bulk on an encroaching army, and approved of them as his wife's companions granting boons to the party.

Sure, why not. Tell me please, why all kind and type of nomads inhabiting extremely hot and unhospitable steppes and deserts wear clothes, sometimes very thick and multi-layered, even if the temperature is way above 30 Celcius?
Because being naked would end with a fucking heat stroke and severe burns, that's fucking why.
>>
>>34261057
And that's exactly why this thread mixes porn with reality... Go back to /h/, please
>>
>>34260899
You are contiving the definition of civilisation to require clothing and then claiming that clothing is requisite for civilisation. That's ass backwards. You're also completely misrepresenting how people historically use clothing and how much clothing is actually used. Heavy materials weren't a thing for hundreds of years of recorded history and pockets weren't a thing for two thousand more. You're full of it.
>>
>>34261033
This. You want to wear loose cottons over your entire body when in, say, a desert or high-heat environment, because if you don't you will die of having your skin burned to a crisp. Serious problem, significant sun-burning can result in faster dehydration, heatstroke, death.
>>
>>34261098
Who said I assumed that clothed = civilised? Aside of your jumping to some very interesting conclusions. The point was that crushing vast majority of humans, regardless of region, race, creed or culture use clothing. Because it's better in many ways than running naked.

You instead spin it somehow around idea of clothes = made of fabric and clothed = civilised. From where the fuck you pulled that?!
>>

So yeah, please least those magnificent cultures that doesn't treat clothing as a way of showing your status. And please, STOP assuming that clothes = made of fabric

Feral children are autists with a shitload of medical issues from not knowing how to properly survive *as a human*.

Look, from the way you speak you sound like a kid with a concept that seems cool in your head but really, it's a trite teen power fantasy. If you want something like it that actually sounds reasonable, go for the high fantasy/myth aspect, the wild man from the uncivilized jungles, the boogeyman from the wastes, tarzan, the man raised by beasts, Romulus and Remus. That angle.

No? Christians don't keep kosher and circumcision is more an American thing than a Christian thing these days. Americans have somehow ended up with the cultural perception that the foreskin just looks gross, off with the fucking thing.
>>
>>34260934

There are some basic ones. Light-colored clothing reflects light and dissipates heat by preventing it from being absorbed as effectively. Heavy clothing traps cooler air underneath it and insulates it from the outside, allowing you to stay relatively cool.

More importantly, in the desert the main issue is preventing dehydration. Clothing prevents moisture from being drawn out of your skin as easily by the dry, hot winds.
>>
>>34262449
I'm so glad I'm from the reasonable half of North America. Canadian girls love that shit and American girls just chalk it up to "eh, he's Canadian; I'm just glad he's not introducing me to his sled dog team and expecting me to remember the names"

I ran a game a while back that took place in a fantasy bronze age desert culture inspired by ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Babylon, etc.

Clothing was more of an accessory than a means of modesty, so one character played the whole game completely naked, instead decorated with jewelry and bodypaint to establish their social status.
Since there was no real nudity taboo, there wasn't much actual reference to the nudity. Didn't really change the game.

The most memorable characteristics about her would how she would veil suggestions or her own ideas with the topic of her "husband."

Like. "My husband would suggest we try to negotiate with the rioters" or "My husband wouldn't approve of trying to steal this item from here, he'd wait till later when the item is in transit."

She was quite intelligent, but it was behind the veil of a dutiful bragging housewife. Very fun character to play.

Her magic worked on the basis of seducing her husband, so revealing the tattoos would entice it to work it's power. Basically no nookie unless you heal the fighter. It was hilarious conceptually.

>>34264763
Mentality is irrelevant; the bulk of research into the issue (and there has been a bulk of research into it) has been inconclusive regarding the effects of male circumcision, with reported effects being more situational than common to all circumcised or uncircumcised individuals.

This is also why female circumcision is hated, since you asked earlier, because the research into it has shown that it leads to an increased risk of disease and issues related to sex. The two are not comparable at all, which is why female circumcision is now more properly referred to as female genital mutilation.

You're basically not even comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to steak.

>>
>>34264881
So because there might be some very small benefit to it it's OK to cut off part of baby boys' genitals, even though no-one has actually taken the effort to fully study the health effects of doing so? Yeah, that sound toooootally reasonable.
>>
>>34263421
>>34263102
The point I think they are hamhandedly trying to make is that with no experience of uncurcumcision to compare, you don't realise just how comparatively disadvantaged you are.

Studies on individuals who have been circumcised after sexual maturity indicate that there is a *significant* loss if sensation in the glans in circumcised individuals compared to uncircumcised.

The process kills a fuckload of nerves.
>>
>>34265067
>even though no-one has actually taken the effort to fully study the health effects of doing so?
There have been a shit-ton of studies into the effects of circumcision, I literally said that in the very post you just quoted.

Personally I don't think it should happen, but it's also not that big an issue in the grand scheme of things unless those doing it completely botch it like those retarded orthodox Rabbis.

>>34265175

You still have to clean your penis, even if you're circumcised. Also cutting off part of your genitals is pretty hindering when it comes to sexual activity.

>>
>>34265583
>Unhindered

*not* having a foreskin is a hinderance - it reduces sensitivity over time and the process damages a fuckload of nerves.

Also the cleaning argument is bunk. The *only* way that it becomes an infection risk is if the individual has such a shocking disregard for personal hygiene they would have ended up with horrible infections regardless of their state of circumcision.
