The soft and clear voice of the songstress can be heard over the rolling murmur of the crowd, and plumes of smoke waft over the heads of the patrons. The afternoon sun filters through the few windows in the beige stone walls, and lights up the myriad bottles of alcohol that line the far wall. Men and women of all shapes and sizes sit around plain wooden tables and on simple steel benches, all waiting for their turn to meet with Fortune.Fortune, short for Soldier of Fortune...There's not a single man in the world that hasn't at least heard the name on the wind. A fixer beyond compare, the mediator between mercenary and client, Fortune has been helping killers put food on the table for hundreds of years and they show no sign of stopping. Across hundreds of settlements, spanning the breadth of the continent, Fortune is the number one place to go for honest work. You find yourself in one of Fortune's offices, in the port town of Arkosa, gulping down a glass of water. You look across the room at the others. Most are low-rank mercenaries, C or B-Rank at best, just trying to make a living. They're common, everyday soldiers, usually those that have been discharged from their nation due to misconduct or the dissolution of their state. They're plentiful, and as such their work comes cheap. Most need to take a new job every week just to make ends meet. Every now and again, though, you catch a flash of something more. A young girl hiding under billowy robes. A steel hand holding onto a mug. Pointed ears, twitching at every errant sound. You can even recognize the uniform of your peers, the Hound. You are Wolf, an elite mercenary in bloodstained world. Like everyone else here, you're looking for work. You look at the number on the ticket in your hand. 273...it's going to be a while.>Pass the time by chatting with a fellow Hound.>Pass the time with a snack and a drink by yourself.>Pass the time by talking with a different mercenary group.

Looks like you want to find someone else in the Company to talk to. Let's see who you find.

Little girls?Pointed ears?As in what bub?Are these mutants accepted?
Also, I wanna meet crazy paladin musclegirl will we?
You decide it would be best to find someone from your own Company to pass the time with. You think your experience with the witches last time might have soured you a bit on outside relations for a while. You get up from your seat and scan the room for your Company's distinctive uniform. While nobody wears it correctly, the Company's jacket is usually the one article that is not skipped. Your eyes dart through the grey masses and you find a few of your comrades. One is a tall, lanky man with his hair slicked back. He is knocking back drinks like there's no tomorrow and chatting up a storm at any woman who passes by. You look down to see his foot hammering away at the floor. A nervous habit, maybe?Next is the small redhead you met the other day. She's not a combatant, as you understand it, so you're confused as to why she is here. What was her name again? Baying Gazelle? Lying Hare? Finally, the last member here needs no introduction. It's Quicksilver Fox, your least favorite person on the planet. You're not sure what you'd say to him, or why you'd even bother talking to him at all, so you put him out of your mind for now.>Talk to the young man.>Talk to the redhead.>Talk to Fox.>Nevermind, you'll speak with someone outside the Hound.

The redheaded lady it is, then.>writing
You approach the redheaded girl and take a seat. It takes her a moment to notice you, as she had been occupying herself with loudly humming an odd tune. Her eyes perk up, and she slaps you on the shoulder."Wolf! Don't sneak up!"But you didn't..."I'm just playing. I saw you the moment I walked in here. How did that last job go? Did you have fun with the twins? Were they your type?"No. Not at all. You prop your head up with your hand and ask what she's doing here. Isn't she just an operations director? She doesn't need to go pick up jobs from fortune. The redhead grins."Good question, good question. I'm here for my sister. She isn't that good with people, so I usually have to come pick out her jobs for her."Sister? Where is she now?"Oh, she's still back at base. Probably sitting by herself or something. I don't know how she just lays around all day. Wouldn't that just drive you crazy?"You imagine it would. You don't think you've ever seen her sister before, though. You think you'd recognize the resemblance."Oh naw," the girl giggles, then she points to her scalp,"The only thing we share is our red hair. She definitely got the sexy genes, but I feel like I'm like a thousand percent more cute, wouldn't you agree?"Um."Oh come on! I know everyone says that Crying Harrier is the cutest operator on base!"Oh, so that's what her name is."You forgot!!?"She frowns deeply and turns scarlet. >This is probably a good time to excuse yourself.>Apologize.>Take it like a man.
>>34257271>Apologize.>Take it like a man.

Alright, now I don't really support doublevoting, so we're going to count this as "Take it like a man"
>>34257569Still wouldn't hurt to say sorriez
There's nothing to be done about it but grin and bear it like a man. Yeah, you forgot her name. She fumes and proceeds to chew your ear off for the better part of an hour for your transgression. She goes on about never letting you date her sister, you being a disgrace to the Hound, and how it's unfair that all handsome men are such jerks. You believe her to be just a little bit drunk, so you don't take all of her comments seriously. As her raving goes off topic, you start to wonder if she just wanted someone to vent at for a while without being all friendly and perky. The job of an operator must be tough...Fortunately, her incessant complaints passed the time relatively quickly and you are quickly ushered into the back room to meet with Fortune. You've never met with Fortune personally, always having been given your jobs by Panther or someone else higher up the food chain. The smell of sweet incense and tobacco fills your nose, and the room suddenly goes dark. The attendants who had shown you inside suddenly leave, and the room seems to grow larger in the impenetrable blackness. And then, out of nowhere..."Hi!! I'm Fortune!"With an explosion of pyrotechnics, a middle aged woman appears a few feet in front of you. Her elegant ball-gown and large, perfectly curled ringlets seem out of place for the desert town you're in. The dark-skinned woman takes a seat in front of you, audibly humming and hawing as she inspects you. You try to introduce yourself, but she brushes you off."Yes, yes, I know you're Wolf. You look a lot different from the last time I saw you. What was that...three, no four hundred years ago?">400 years? Question her.>You just want a job... Stick to business only.
>>34257818>400 years? Question her. Also, point out that we're a different Wolf, the name gets passed down every once in a while.

Your jaw drops. How can someone be around for four hundred years, let alone remember someone from that long ago? That just doesn't add up. Even the oldest people alive, using ancient technology, have only lived to about one hundred and fifty years. And those people are practically vegetables, hooked up to bizarre machines. Fortune produces a paper fan and begins to cool herself. She pulls on a ringlet and eyes you carefully."Wolf, I was around when you were just a skinny boy who crawled out of the desert, begging for work. I remember those desperate eyes, and those shaky hands. You were a lot darker, though. Have you been spending too much time inside, lately? Where's that lovely tan?", you try to interrupt her, but she continues on unabated,"Well, you took a long enough vacation anyway. You must have decided to go to some-place cool. A three-hundred year skiing trip is a little weird, but you're the boss, Wolf. You'll find that my network has only gotten stronger since you've been away."With a wave of her hand, hundreds of projection screens appear, floating in mid-air. There is no panel, no source of light. Simply page upon page of information, drifting around the room, softly pulsing with amber and green lights. "Soldier of Fortune, strategic coordinator and private military contractor manager at your service. What kind of job are you looking for today?"Kind of job?"You know...Infiltration, Extermination, Demolition, Transportation, Evacuation, and, finally, Diplomatic."You're feeling a bit overwhelmed here. How about instead she just gives you...>Something that seems easy.>Something that seems challenging.>Something unusual and exciting.

Something unusual and exciting, huh? >writing>deciding on the roster
Then...you want something unusual and exciting. "Oh?" Fortune smiles at you, snapping her fan shut. The countless datascreens line up behind her, and they begin to flash with information."Searching for a request. Keywords: unusual, exciting, with a wildcard of exotic."Hey, you never asked for exotic...Fortune's eyes flicker, and she stands up."Two missions found! Reviewing the data now. First entry: Operation Bident. To the south likes the Betowin tribes. They are a clannish, warlike people who venerate a god of the sky. In their religion, women who are to be wed undergo a ritual to purify them for the ceremony. By religious law, any man of the tribes can claim them for his own during this time. A certain sultan has two such daughters undergoing this rite in the coming weeks. His enemies are known to have multiple S-Rank Mercenaries at their disposal, and will likely attempt to kidnap his daughters during this time. Should they succeed, they will become legitimate heirs to his kingdom and its assets. You must protect the sultan's daughters until the ritual is complete.""Second entry: Operation Elixer. The Republic of Varan has a Senator Merchant that they suspect has been dealing in a certain illicit substance. This substance, when applied to human beings, causes incredible mutation, but also madness. He has employed two known S-Rank Mercenaries as well as a full Regiment of B-Rank Mercenaries. In Varan the Right To Quarter Men at Arms prevents any officials from passing by his troops. Such protection does not extend to Mercenaries, however, and it is his fellow Senators that are offering this job. Your mission is to eliminate the Senator through an overdose of his own drug.">Take Operation Bident.>Take Operation Elixer.

"Oh, you're doing bodyguard work, then? Or do you just want to see some princesses?"You refuse to answer that question."Very well then. Since you are Wolf, and I still owe you that favor, let me bring up the database to see which mercenaries are available to help you for this task."Fortune brings up several slides with fuzzy photos and full files. You recognize these as being the mercenary data files from before. One seems familiar, but the others...Name: Knight Errant Lyonette Eliane AubertAffiliation: TRAAge: 22Height: 173Eyes: GreenHair: BlondeA traveling knight bearing sword and shield, Lyonette is a picture of a bygone age. Using the Sycra arms of her ancestors, Lyonette can unleash the power of her Noble Blood to slash with beams of light and block attacks witha field of force. Even though she works as a mercenary, Lyonette is dedicated to the idea of Noblesse Oblige; she has abandoned missions which have clashed with her sense of ethics. Despite her willful nature, she continues to be hired due to her sheer destructive power. When she isn't doing mercenary work, Lyonette travels the land on a self-appointed task to discover true chivalry and valor.Name:"Silent" AquilaAffiliation: HoundAge: 25Height: 167Eyes: GreyHair: RedSilent Aquila is an infiltration expert, capable of slipping in and out of territories unseen and unheard. While her title hints at her skill, it was actually given because she is all but mute, and typically only communicates through nonverbal means. She is a master of free running and scaling walls, so much so that her enemies have said that she can fly. In combat, she relies on a silenced machine pistol to do her dirty work. Aquila is a mystery to most of her companions, as she merely sits quietly at the cafeteria between missions.
>>34259769Name: Dame Seretta ElvinarostrAffiliation: TRAAge: 17Height: 170Eyes: RedHair: WhiteSeretta was not actually trained as a medic within her own organization, but her first aid has been described as nothing more than miraculous. While it seems she does nothing more than simply dress a wound according to fairly standard doctrine, there are rumors abound that her touch can dull pain and her blood can even heal wounds. But, those rumors can't possibly be true, can they...? For her part, Seretta seems to be displeased with her relegation to combat medic, especially as she is averse to touching blood. She relies on a rifle to fight and prefers as much distance as she can get.>Choose the Knight Errant>Choose Silent Aquila>Choose the bloody Dame.

"I have been waiting for you, Master Wolf."After agreeing to the contract, you've been given several days to prepare. Today, you were to meet up with the Knight from the True Royal Army. "When you declined my aid against the dragon, I must admit I was shamed. Being denied a chance to fight against the serpent was surely because of my own inability. You must have sensed that and sought to protect me. Nevertheless, I volunteered myself once more, and it seems that fate as smiled upon me."Down upon one knee, her mailed hand crossed over her breast, the Knight keeps her head bowed as she speaks. She's not at all what you expected. Tall for a woman, but lithe with elegant lines and curves. What strikes you the most are her long, tapered ears, which flick back and forth as you move, tracking you across the hotel lobby. A long sword and large shield lay on the ground beside her, constructed from a radiant metal that glitters in every color with the shifting of the light. The woman stands and gives a small curtsey, pulling at the hem of her skirt."I am Lyonette Eliane Aubert, Master Wolf. I am pleased beyond measure to finally work with you."That name is a bit of a mouthful..."I-I see," her ears droop, "Such a uselessly elaborate name is of no use on the battlefield, is it? T-Then Lyon will be fine."She turns a way for a few moments, then produces a basket and sets it on the ground in front of you, backing up a few steps before continuing."I have brought you a small gift, as a token of appreciation for burdening you."You hesitate at first, but then you pick up the basket, pushing aside the cloth. It's...raw meat?"Yes! This is choice cattle from my lands back on the Floating Spires! When I heard you had accepted me, I slaughtered the fattest calf and had it prepared for you! I hope it is to your liking.">...Thanks...>What is this, some kind of joke?

...Thanks..."I'm so glad that you like it! I was worried that I would not know how to appease a man of the wilds such as yourself, but it seems I had overthought the issue. My maids had told me that it would have been best to simply give you gold or silver, or perhaps gift one of them to you, but I knew you to be as the highlanders of old, only interested in the meat needed to fill your gut to fight another day.""Are you going to eat it here? Are you going to eat now? I can have a table prepared for you. Oh, forgive my rudeness. You do not need any such things as tables or silverware, or even a fire, yes? On the battlefield, there is no time for such things. You must eat or be eaten, kill or be killed. The peerless, masterless wolf...to see you eat would be such a rewarding and informative experience. Please, do not mind me, eat. Eat! Show me your fangs!"Does this pointy-eared woman ever stop talking? From the moment you've met her, all she does is blabber on and on. You put the meat down and tell her you're not hungry now. You only eat certain things raw anyway..."Raw? Certain things...?" Her eyes grow wide and she steps back, "N-no! I must insist that this hunger be placated elsewhere! Let me fetch one of my maids, at least. They are not much to look at, but I'm told that every one of them is wise in these ways and..."You rub your temples in frustration. This isn't going anywhere good. What's with those ears? Is everyone like that in the Royal Army? She blinks, confused, then puts her hands to her ears."Oh, is this your first time seeing a member of the Sky Clan, Master Wolf? You are surprisingly sheltered for being the peerless mercenary."Out with it. She coughs and puts a hand to her chest, closing her eyes as if reciting a poem."A long, long time ago, when the star fell from the sky, a certain kingdom was struck by its fragments. The kingdom was thrown into the air, but did not fall. The people upon this land survived and grew, changing with its mysterious power. These people are the Sky Clan. With long ears and all colors of the rainbow, they swore themselves to the old Empire as its vassals and princes. We have the power to use the Sycra that rests within our bodies to heal our wounds and act with unparalleled grace. I do not mean to imply clumsiness on your part, Master Wolf, but you appear slow and stiff as compared to even an average member of the Sky Clan," She opens her eyes and beams at you, "Well, what do you think of my story!?"So basically she's a mutant."As expected of Master Wolf, you are rough and without restraint in all things," she grows stiff, "Yes...yes one could certainly draw such a conclusion based on that story. I would beg of you to be more delicate when dealing with me in the future, however. My heart is not yet prepared for a man of your particular cultivation."Right.>The mission?>You need to prepare.
