You ride your bike into the park, Reeber trailing behind. It’s pretty cold outside and nobody’s around anywhere, especially the park. All the trees have a skeletal look to them, being devoid of leaves. You spot the man of the hour sitting on a park bench, having a starting contest with seagulls.

You pedal up to Waldric and put on the brakes, and climb off your bike. “Heyo,” you say. You glare at the assembled seagulls and frighten them away because you can. (-2 PP: 30/32) (+2 Stress: 5/100)

Waldric looks up at you. His long, silky hair is pulled back into a pony tail, and his drawn, distinguished face bears an annoyed expression. You can feel a hint of approval at your arrival, though. “And what exactly is the point of our meeting here?” he says.

>I was holding out for the off chance you’d wear a certain sweater. I’m disappointed.
>I don’t know. You tell me.
>You’re the one that wanted to meet. Or at least hinted you wanted to with all your touchy feelingness.
>To talk about me helping you out, I guess. Or working together.

You sit down by Waldric. “You hinted me here with all your touchy feelingness,” you say, a little annoyed that he won’t just come out and say what he wants. “You did want to have a talk without Isaac being all, oh yeah, I’m the big man in town, right? You know, about me and you working together better and stuff.”

“I think for the purposes of our conversation, you’re the one that wants to talk about this,” Waldric tells you. “Isaac has made it abundantly clear that I’m not to attempt to influence you. He doesn’t want me dragging you into dangerous situations.”

“Yeah. He’s kind of a protective kind of guy,” you say, absently. “Anyway, I kind of do want to talk to you. I mean, I wouldn’t be here otherwise.” You pause for a moment. “Are things really that bad? You know, that you really need help and stuff? I thought you wanted to settle down and have adorable skeleton kids, not be all politicky and power grabbing.”

Waldric leans back and looks at the white sky. “Influence has a big appeal for someone like me,” he says. “I won’t shy away from it.”
>>
>>34240796

You can understand that frame of mind. On the streets, if you’re not in charge or the friends of somebody in charge, you’re in trouble. “I get it,” you say. “But now that you’re the one calling shots and stuff, why’re you suddenly going for all these new people to help out? You didn’t seem so keen a month ago.”

“I didn’t realize how much Meckor was dealing with here,” says Waldric. “He kept me in the dark about a lot of things. Meckor had a big name, and he had a big footprint. People were afraid of him. Word went around in hell that he was taking this seriously, and no one dared bother him.” His expression is flat. “I’m being more low profile, which is safer, but it has its costs. Compared to the last baron, I’m a lightweight, even if my alliance with the Magister and the Marshal lend me a stable platform. And I can’t necessarily show that fact off without jeopardizing them.”

You piece together what he’s saying. “So basically, nobody’s scared of you,” you say.

“In hell, the scariest thing in town runs the show,” Waldric explains. “There’s a lot of immigration right now into the city. It’s somewhere new. A Terran colony. And they’re bringing old world influences along with them,” he says. “Agents of various courts are coming over to have a look around, and they’re staking claims. They’re testing the waters to see how I respond, if I respond at all.”

Yeah that's more or less it. All three options would have to have the conclave get more members, though. It's a bad move to attack members of another court if our own is already so sparse that they think they can poke around in our business.

“So, have you sat down with Isaac and talked to him about all this stuff?” you ask. “Because if you’re just being all cagey all the time, he’s not going to know when to help you.”

“Isaac knows the situation,” says Waldric. “It’s why I could get him to agree to me filling the conclave. Like I said though. If I throw all of my problems at him, before long word will get around that I’m working with a demonbane. The best case scenario is that I get branded a blood traitor.”

“And the worst case?” you ask, not really wanting to know.

“The federal government finds out he’s been working with demons and they decide to investigate. They find out about you, me, the Crowthers – everybody. They add us to the registry so all the demon hunters in the country know where to find us if they squint hard enough.”

That would suck. “Okay, so that’s bad,” you say.

“Yes. That’s bad,” Waldric replies sarcastically. “That’s why Isaac and I aren’t arm in arm in this. We both need plausible deniability.”

You think you understand the idea he’s describing. “So some of your business needs to stay your business,” you say.

He nods. “That’s the essence of it,” he says. “That brings me to what I hope you could volunteer to do for me. I’m a well known face in the region. My adversaries do their homework, and they’re not impressed. They see a clear picture. No one fears what they understand.”
>>
>>34241858

You mull this over. You’re not sure if you’re too enthusiastic about the idea. “What. You want me to be like, your secret weapon or something?”

“I just need people to think I have a secret weapon,” says Waldric. “You’re not all that powerful compared to some of the things that are lurking about nowadays, but nobody knows anything about you. You can be something they don’t understand, and that’s far better.”

>It sounds like I’m actually just going to be a secret weapon. You can just come out and say it.
>So, this doesn’t require me namedropping at all, right? I don’t really want to go public with the whole

I dunno. Those hired goons from when we killed Nabuth and then later Cordeliate seemed pretty damn spooked at the prospect of a Verwelken working for the other side. I think that doing some spooky scary shadowshit would probably go a bit further than just having Ranthix scream at them. Just gotta make sure to keep it spooky.
>>
>>34242047
Agreed. In keeping with our Verwelken heritage, by the time they see us it should be too damn late. The only knowledge the other courts should have of us is that anyone who sticks their nose into Wally's fief turn up missing or a corpse. No witnesses allowed, only rumors. The unknown is much more intimidating than the truth.
>>
>>34241878
>>Let me get this straight. You need me… to scare demons… into being scared of you?
>>
>>34241992
They already know about Ranthix being scary and able to rip and tear with the best of them. We won't really get that much out of trying to scare them with Ranthix, he's a known quantity who they are already going to tread cautiously around. But he's not exactly the subtle type.

We should try to embody the fear of the unknown, we want as few details about us to be released. Mysterious disappearances, leaving messages and threats inside someone's domicile while they're sleeping, poison, explosives, that sort of thing. If none of our victims see our face that's a good thing, and if they do see our face we should make sure they're dead. Because the less they know about us, the more cautious they will be, the more powerful a Verwelken they will assume we are, and they'll always be worried that we'll go after them next, or that we're watching them right that moment.

Hopefully our enemies will focus so much on defending themselves against a Verwelken that they aren't prepared to deal with Belphegoran or Infernus.

“Let me get this straight. You need me… to scare demons… into being scared of you,” you say slowly.

“Nicely done, Sierra,” says Waldric. “Was that you just listening to what I was saying right now?”

“Hey,” you tell him warningly. “If I’m going to be your secret weapon, don’t go giving me that kind of sass. And seriously, just say it. Sop dancing around the issue.”

“You’re going to be my secret weapon,” he says plainly. “But the important thing about that concept is that you stay a secret. That’s the only reason it works. If anyone finds out about you, they’ll know they don’t really have that much to be afraid of.”

“So this is more like me being some ninja assassin,” you say. You make your voice all gruff and tough and sound kind of like Sattler. “Who do you need dead?”

Waldric smirks at you. “It’s not who I need dead. It’s how we need to make them dead. Killing isn’t what I need your help with, it’s the presentation. The reason I was afraid of you when we first met was Stirn’s report after he tried to track you down. He was an excellent tracker with his hellhounds, and the night you killed Nabuth, he was on your .”

He continues. “And he lost the trail. I’d been considering how to betray Meckor for some time, but that’s the point at which I thought there might be something that could do him in. That’s the side I need from you. The part that makes people question their superiors when they come up against you.”
>>
>>34242717

“I don’t know,” you say. “I have a life and stuff. I can’t be doing this kind of thing full time.”

“You only need to do it a few times,” says Waldric. “Just to get the idea into their minds. Once it’s there it will fester and spread. Fear is contagious. Before long they’ll be wondering if Isaac really was the one that killed everyone in Meckor’s conclave, or if I had more a hand in it than they thought.”

>I guess I’ll start sharpening my sword then.
>If there’s really that many parties out to do you in, is it really a good idea to be meeting in the park right now? I mean, I thought it was convenient, but if it’s not safe it’s not really that convenient.

>Soul Drinker: Sierra rips the power out of a target with physical contact. Concentration must be on the contact itself, not on physical attacks, and it must be maintained for a brief duration. If the target has less PP than what should be drained, the remainder of the drain instead deals partial damage to the target.

Yep. Drain their PP, keep draining until they're out of HP.
>>
>>34243162

That doesn't deal full damage. It'd take a while of standing there grappling them.
>>
>>34243162
That sounds like a really, really damn bad way to assassinate someone. Opens Sierra up to so much retaliation and they aren't just going to stand there and let us fondle them for however long it would take.
>>
>>34243192
Would it serve to stun them?
>>
>>34243215

No.
>>
>>34243114
Soul Drinker should be able to do it. It might take a bit if they have a large health pool, but it's possible.

We restrain them with our shadow and tendrils, reinforce it with Shadow Grasp, drain their PP, and once that's gone we can Soul Drinker them until they run out of health.

It's time consuming, and generally an impractical way to kill someone, but if we're assassinating someone physically weak in their sleep it should be doable.

The only physically weak are Tartarans and Hellions, but they have massive PP pools and all kinds of tricks. Belphegorans are about human-tier strong but they could soul drinker us right back when we grapple them or they could smack us with Inflict Pain or something when we try to pull this bullshit. Every other type of demon would skullfuck us if we tried this and even those three that it might work on would probably thrash around and make a mess of things, defeating the entire point of this.

“Well, if everybody’s really that paranoid, it’ll be no sweat to scam them into the idea that you have some ultra shadow monster at your command,” you say.

“It helps that you are part a shadow monster,” says Waldric. “A few controlled demonstrations of your abilities should do enough.”

“So questions,” you say, counting off on your fingers. “On a scale of one to dangerous, how dangerous is this really?”

“With what you can do?” asks Waldric. “Not very, with proper preparation. You won’t be alone, either. Ranthix can arrange support for when we decide to make our move. Even when rumor spreads that there’s a Verwelken about, you don’t have the same vulnerabilities that a full-blooded Verwelken does.”

You’re sold. After all, you are pretty damn awesome. “All right. I’m convinced I think. But you know, if I’m going to be doing like, even possibly dangerous stuff, I don’t think it’s out of place to get paid like, lots of money,” you inform Waldric. “Like a contract killer or something, you know? More money would be preferably to less money.”

Waldric’s eyes brighten. “We’ll discuss the exact terms of the agreement later,” he says. You can tell that he’s amused by the demand. So long as you don’t ask for something crazy, probably.

You laugh, kind of excited at the idea of going out and scaring the hell out of beings of darkness and evil and stuff while maybe possibly also ripping them apart.
>>
>>34243569

You snap out of the glee. Man, you really need to like, snap something’s neck right now. (Bloodlist: Rising) “Seriously though,” you say, “I’ll sharpen the lightning sword.”

He smiles and glances over at you. “I appreciate the enthusiasm.” He really does, too. You think maybe he’s been having a hard couple of weeks for you to actually be able to get through past his snarky, kind of snide demeanor. He looks a little contemplative, but you think he’s probably gearing up to leave soon.

Reeber suddenly comes back over from wherever he’s been adventuring and jumps up onto the bench beside you, and lays down. You pat his head appreciatively. “There’s a boy,” you coo at him. You then look back at Waldric. He has a royal kind of aura to him. Maybe being baron is doing things for him. He seems more responsible a person than when you met him.

I kinda wanna hear about what people in Halth say about Verwelkens. We've heard the Hallow's "they killed grandpappy" thing, and we've probably gotten some trivia from books, but we haven't really gotten any word on things from a demon somewhat fresh out of Halth, unless you count Cordeliate's surprise.

I just wanna know what exactly the reputation is that makes people practically shit themselves every time shadows start squiggling in their direction.

Here's a clinical summary from the Q&A thread. I still wanna scare the fuck out of some demons once we get more verwelken-y, though.
>>
>>34243686
>Stepping the Corner into a hellborn's apartment
>Satt's there wiping brains off a pair of her fists
>Sierra: "Uh."
>Satt: "Waitaminute... Sierra?"
>Sierra: "Boy, these landmaster powers sure are kooky, right?"
>Satt: [flicks safety off]
>>
>>34244020
I read that, but it sounds like the kind of thing that you'd see in a textbook.
>>
>>34244028
Thankfully, I don't think that's going to happen.

We have our Life Sense from Landmastering, and I'm pretty sure we can recognize Satt's robo-scent. And Satt doesn't seem like the subtle kind when it comes to hunting Demons so we should be able to hear her before she sees us.

So we should be able to merrily run the fuck away instead of engaging.
>>
So power displays right?

>Sneak into targets house, briefly shut their lights off, leave a cute little crayon drawing of a shadow monster biting the head off of that particular target on their fridge.
>>
The landmaster life sense thing isn't like a radar at the lower left-hand corner of your screen. Now, if you were in the same room as Sattler, you could pick up the feeling that she didn't really belong on your land, or even this plane if you happened to roll pretty well.

“When you first saw me on Haight Street, did you know I was part Belphegoran?”

“I assumed so,” says Waldric. “You don’t have much of a glamor on you. If you were a demon, that would mean either you looked like a human to begin with, or you were incredibly good with glamors. Or that you were a shape shifter, but I try not to jump to unlikely conclusions.”

“You thought I could pick up on your emotional vibes, didn’t you,” you say. “I mean, you came off as kind of an ass.”

He smiles wryly. “I’m not the only one. I thought you were intentionally making me spell it all out for you out of spite,” he says. “Now I know not to ever overestimate you.”

You shrug off the jab. Because maybe it’s banter? “You know, I have Ranthix showing me all about being Infernus and whatever,” you say, “but I was kind of wondering about being Belphegoran too. I mean. You know what I mean. You know all this stuff and I don’t know any of the stuff.” It makes you feel lame in some ways.

“If this is you asking me to help you,” Waldric says, “then I wouldn’t be against it. I could find the time to show you a few things.”

“Cool,” you say, smiling a bit. “So how soon do we want to initiate conniving plan Charlie?” you ask.

“Not for another week at least,” he says. “I need to find out the details first.”

“Just let me know when the thing is,” you reply. “So uh. Not to sound greedy and stuff, but is there like, anything else I can get out of this whole scare specialist besides, you know, good vibes and dollar signs?” you say. Maybe something with magic? You haven’t really thought about it.

Waldric raises an eyebrow and gives you an inquiring look. “Such as?” he asks, playing dumb.

Doesn't hurt to ask, conceivable that Meckor had some kind of tomes along with all of his other assests, remember of course that includes the stuff that his dead generals owned. What I mean is that Philo might have owned a book or something related to landwells, either way it's worth asking about
>>
“I don’t know,” you say. “You know where any landwells are?”

Waldric gives you a flat look. “I didn’t know what a landwell was until a few months ago,” he says.

“So…?”

“So no, I don’t know where any landwells are,” he answers clearly.

“Do you have any books or like, maps or anything you can find?”

“From what I can gather,” says Waldric, “landmasters are incredibly powerful. Knowing that, and knowing that the only thing that can compete with them are other landmasters stealing their wells, I would assume they destroy or hoard any texts that fall into their possession. So again, no. I don’t have any convenient treasure map for you.”

You’re kind of disappointed, but you also feel kind of dumb for asking. But there’s no such thing as a stupid question, right? That’s the theory anyway. “Well. I guess some kind of protection would be cool instead,” you say. “Like. In the dark I can be kind of tough, but I’m not really immune to bullets or dying.”

“I’m glad you learned that so early in life,” Waldric says. “I’ll see if I can’t find something to keep you a little bit safer. My old dead ‘friends’ left a lot of trinkets to sort through.”

“Something as awesome as Meckor’s trident would be best, but I guess it’s not likely something like that’s just lying around,” you say.
>>
>>34245474

“No it isn’t.”

You stand up and Reeber leaps off the bench. “Well, thanks for having a look I guess,” you say, picking up your bike. “I’ll see you later. Enjoy… park-ing and chilling and stuff. I’m going to go home.”

“Have a safe ride,” says Waldric. “Don’t die.”

Dude’s stealing your lines. “Man, just… stop being lame,” you say, suppressing a smile. You mount your bike and ride off, hellhound on your heels.
