Welcome back to the old west Gnome Civilization!. Previously, a group of 60 gnome settlers arrived on the western coast. Settling into a town located under a floating island attached by vines. A primitive steam tank is invented and used to eradicate some totally peaceful, you guys are monsterstrolls. The children are taken and put to work in the mines and as heavy labor. Improved hot air balloons are built and used to reach the island. A land of giants, insects carry away rabbits and sequoias break the sky. Batteries are made, and used for nothing really. A new, better forge is build in the camp, making use of the bessemer process. The golden axe taken from the trolls is researched and a female gnome starts to learn the magic rune language. We start up a farm, which held many precious metals. We learn some necromatic enchanting and lose our trolls. They left a troll baby though.

It's lame just having one roller, but hopefully more people will join. I'll give them a civilization to work with.

What is the condition of our town? Are we just living in sod dugouts? I think we should chop wood and build a proper town. The location should be on top of the cave mine I think.

Improve living conditions: 82

In preparation for the upcoming festival, the gnomes set about making the town a better place to live. Wooden slats are placed on rails, making a clean walkway. The houses are expanded, both out and downwards. By the end of the month, most houses are twenty feet long and contain a pantry/basement. The troll stables are also repaired, then improved. Steel bars and spikes are made to entrap the subject in a complex matrix of metal. Due to the regenerative powers of trolls, the spikes are made to pierce and contain the beasts. A small temple to Garl Glittergold is made, a redwood sapling is flown down from the edge of the island. While small in comparison, the sapling is large enough to panel the whole temple. Gold is painted on in ancient Gnommish letters, while gold nuggets are formed into a bust of the great god.

The gnomes celebrate their new lives in this new land. The wine and beer flow from their casks like gushing waterfalls. On the seventh day of the festival the first feast is held. Massive bison are cooked whole, the fat sizzling as the flames jump up for a bite of the tender meat. Ostrich-horses are quartered and the drumsticks given to the children. Giant pies, raspberry, blueberry, smurfberry, and cherries are mixed in the gnome fashion. The children and newly-weds stomp the berries to a fine jam(after washing their feet) then roll it into pastries. After the feast, the children are sent off to pray, while the adults set on making more. Through the month, feasts are held, contests of strength and wits pick out the best men and women. Two childhood sweethearts are wed and seen sneaking off to their new home. By the end of the month, the gnomes are fatter and happier then they have been since they traveled to the new land. But all must things must end, and with the farms beginning to yield food need work.

Explore the island: 68

A hot air balloon is sent up and down the vines to the island, ferrying all the needed items to start a town. First a small contingent of rifle men are sent to set up a perimeter. Next the tents are sent, with women to set up the out post. The food and water containers are sent up as well. A basic tent town is quickly set up along the river. A blacksmith and his tools are soon to follow. Now somewhat self-sefficent, the outpost can set to exploring.

The rifle men file out of the township, into the wilderness. Splitting into groups, the men scout the land of giant trees. One group treks up the river, trying to find the source. After six hours, they come upon a great lake. In the center of the lake, a steady stream of bubbles rise up from the water. Another group, scouting the sides of the island, find open grassy land, with strange beasts on them. Six feet tall, grey brown leathery skin, and spikes jutting out of the beast's face. Stranger, it has a fifth limb on it's head. The last group, composed of the best shots, is sent into the forest of giant insects. Three dead dragonflies later, the forest is mapped out. One thick stand of trees and brambles remain untouched, no man being able to find a way through the spiky vines. The teams meet back at the town, and compile the maps they made.

temple on the island: 90

The island town sets to work cutting down one of the many redwood trees. Felling the giant, then cutting it to gnome size take over a week. The main byproduct is a large supply of fire wood made from the resin soaked limbs. The temple construction begins, first with the cutting of the ground to the bedrock. The floor is made with golden heartwood from the sequoia. Some of the lower branches, the size of other full grown trees, are cut into the supporting beams for the temple. The walls are made from the strong outer wood, polished to glow with the setting sun. The interior is covered in gold leaf, the glyphs in praise to the Lord left without gold. The walls are golden, with red polished wood poking through the metal. A quartz crystal is found in the mines and cut into thin rectangles with gold symbols of prayer carved into the crystal. The panes are set in the roof, forming a glass ceiling and filtering the light. The local enchanter (insert name), carves bizarre runes into the alter and pours more gold onto the marble. The runes glow for a second, before the whole alter glows with an otherworldly light. Our god is here.

Test the Gas: 31

The lake gas is strange, meriting testing. A dingy is slapped together by a carpenter and flouted out into the lake. A gnome with two waxed cloth bags is sent to get samples of the gas. Quickly getting a sample from each stream of bubbles(there are two), he paddles his way back to land. There, two rabbits had been caught and put in cages. One rabbit is put in each bag and sealed up. Ten minutes later, the bags are opened. One rabbit lives and kicks out at the bag, while another has stopped moving.

Telegraph to the Island: 78

The speed at which word can get from the base camp and the outpost is seen as much to slow for safety. The copper nodes drawn to the gnomes are collected and melted into long thin wire. The wire is wrapped and made into one single long cable, long enough to reach the island town. A small wooden building is set up with a receiver, two copper needles that spark together. The wire, covered over with small glass tubes, is ferried down to the ground and set up to a a new invention. The invention, a lever that connects a voltaic pile to the wire, can be used to spell out simple codes. The codes, series of long and short sparks, can mean anything from the gnommish alphabet. A team of two gnomes on each town maintain that no messages are lost.

Test the Gas: 23
Still more testing is done on the gasses from the lake. Both samples are exposed to flame. One is extremely flammable, exploding out the top of the bag. The second gas reacts similarly, but at a much slower rate. The gas is able to relight a coal, burning extremely hot. It should be noted that the air on the island is denser and gnomes are able to keep working for much longer without breaks in physical activities.

It seems we are encountering Hydrogen and Oxygen. That's strange. Usually, they don't occur in nature in this way. I speculate that the floating island is a man-made object. Develop Balloons: 98

The new gases are realized to be hydrogen and oxygen. The gnomes set up a small collection balloon, attached to a funnel above the hydrogen bubbles. The balloon fills through the day, only staying down from the weights added to the bag. The balloon is attached to an alumiron basket, and set off to the ground town. The basket holds a propeller attached to the basket. With no engine, the propeller is enchanted to change the amount it spins depending on a small lever. The balloon shape is changed and reinforced with more alumiron.

A small stone wall, 10 feet tall, is set up around the lower town. A landing pad with iron loops for mooring is set outside the walls. A voltaic pile and generator is also set up there, to resupply the airship with hydrogen

Explore Island: 97

The unexplored area on the island is circled by brambles and vines, making passage nearly impossible. A steam wagon is drawn up to the island, and retro-fitted. Covered in an alumiron shell with small gun ports pointing out at the forest. After a small time forcing through the vines, the wagon breaks through the brambles. A jungle of small tropical and swamp plants are found. The quiet of the wagon is shattered by a shriek and a crash of bone on metal. The view ports are covered by feathers and scale as the animal claws at the metal to get at the juicy meat inside.

The rifles fire off in unison, blasting the creature backwards. The demonic creature rears back, a giant bird with a beak the size of a child and flesh ripping claws are the ends of it's two scaly legs. Another blast rocks it back, a round tearing into the animal's beak. The bird sways and crashes to the ground. The group ties the terrific bird to a sled and drags it back to the upper town.

The winds are growing colder and the water in the town freezes at the edges

Improving Rifles: 99

The recent episode with the animals on the island and the invention of the new balloons, has inventors making new weapons for taking down beasts and natives. One gunsmith comes up with the idea of external magazines, compared to tube magazines in the stock. The inventor makes metal cases to hold the rounds, and a new gas based system to eject the used shell casings. The rifle is able to fire 400 yards with accuracy, and 600 for round saturation. The drawbacks of the rifle being that it is rather heavy and the recoil is impressive. The wood stock and body help to cut down on the weight of the rifle. The riflemen are able to start drilling with the new rifle and learn the ins and outs of the new weapon.

Look into the island: 25

The islands ability float and preform electrolysis is new and potential dangerous. The airship is loaded up and flown down to the sides of the island. Spiraling downward, the ship searches to a door or entrance to the island. A small hole is seen in the side, sheltered by an outcropping of rock. Releasing gas, the balloon drifts down towards the opening. The ship crew prepare to dock when spots appear. The crew is forced to descend to escape hydrogen. With no way of regaining altitude, the balloon flies down to the landing platform in Downtown. One crew member was able to get a look inside before blacking out though.(see pic)

Second the vote for breathing apparatus. The island generates oxygen, so all we need to do is make containers and hoses.

The caves present a new frontier, and they must be explored. The amount of hydrogen in the air block out oxygen, meaning that any explorer would need to have to have oxygen taken in. A tube is formed of deer hide and attached to a a helmet. The helmet's face is covered in glass and sealed with pine resin and stone flakes. the tube is attached to a bellows worked by two gnomes. The helmet and tube are tested out in the lake before being taken to the cave.

A short balloon ride up to the cave, and the explorer is ready to embark. The explorer jumps and lands on the outcropping, before lowering himself to cave entrance. Walking through into the cave, a blue glow comes from the bubbling water. A series of crystals are randomly growing in the water and making the water twist and change with the energy of the crystals.

Breathing Apparatus: 79

The explorer exits the cave and returns to Downtown. An elephant is slaughtered and skinned then the skin is treated. A full body suit is formed to the measurements of the explorer. The leather clad man is ferried up to the cave, and the breathing tube hooked up to his helmet. The explorer climbs into the cave, slipping into the water. The crystals are broken off with a few strong kicks from the steel boots. Inserting the crystals into an elephant skin bag, a slight shock travels through the leather.

Traveling out and back to Downtown, the crystals are examined by the rune mage and the inventors. There seems to be no magic runes on the crystals, they seem to be totally natural. The inventors are happy to have the crystals for their strange ability to produce energy

we have no idea how many enemies we will go up against, if we had some sort of electrical charge blaster or some shit with energy from the crystal we'd have a weapon that can be used an unlimited amount of times.

bullets can miss, and when they fire the crystal will likely be damaged or fragmented and destroyed.

One crystal(out of ten) is broken up and given to the inventors, along with a pair of elephant leather gloves. One gunsmith breaks off a smaller portion off his shard and solders the fragment into a napalm bullet hollow. He then fires the round at a deer, causing the creature to fall to the ground in small seizures as it bleeds out. The rest of the makers work on other uses for the crystal. One finds that with placing the shard in water and attaching it to a turbine can drive a steam wagon for a hour before needing more water. Another attaches a water bladder and a fragment of her crystal to a small balloon. The balloon stayed aloft from the hydrogen, while the oxygen spilled out a hole near the water. Finally, a fragment of crystal is used to electrify a knife blade.

The ideas form the inventors would require a large amount of crystal, causing the chemists to look into their chemical properties. The crystals smell slightly of rotten eggs and when a grain of the crystal was exposed to flame, it lit into ghostly blue flames. Deducing that the material contains sulfur, the chemist puts a shard in a copper pot and baths the crystal in sulfuric liquid. The crystal grows slightly over a fortnight, from the size of mouse to a rabbit. More chemicals will be needed to grow more crystals

A great shadow slides over the forest, long and round. Circling the island, the zeppelin slows and throws down it's anchors. The Wells Fargo blimp has come, and carries with them a large store to shop in. But what can you trade?
