I think we're going to run late next Friday, after I get in from work, and go until sometime Saturday morning, can't say for sure. Other than that, keep an eye on the Twitter! If you need the Twitter or archive links, ask in thread and I'll get 'em to you.

Work decided to bugger me on when I'd be working next week, so hopefully I'm not feeling dead next Friday. (If I am I'll probably stop and buy an energy drink on the way home for the run.)

~
Getting shot hurts. Getting shot in the side hurts. Sneaking into a bathroom to stitch the hole in your side by yourself hurts. You start when a hand lands on your shoulder, so intent on your stitching. You look up and come face to face with Captain Katsuragi. Her eyes are filled with emotion- warmth, anger, and a hint of sadness. You wonder how she managed to get here from the Lawson's so fast and whether or not the cops are pissed. Probably, a dim part of you notes, but then it's a company town and the cops are company paid. They won't ask too many questions.

“What happened?” She asks quietly, watching your hands as you resume trying to put your side back together. The wound was nothing serious (serious being loss of limb or consciousness, you think grimly), and you managed to fish the bullet out fairly easily- it had gotten stuck between your Kevlar and subdermal armor.

“Got into a gunfight with some fellows. Problem's solved. No need to worry.”

“What about the Children?”
>>
“Kids're fine,” you say shortly. Then you hiss with a sharp intake of breath as you finish the stitching and knot it off.

“What about you?” That's an odd question. You glance up at her, and now her eyes are unreadable.

“'m fine,” you don't shrug the question aside- shrugging would hurt, because you got shot, because some dumbfuck thought he could take you, and because Lily's playing games with your head. You need to have a serious talk with her, you think.

“What keeps you going?” That's an odd question for a superior to be asking you, you think. She elaborates, then, when you don't look up. “Why are you still in the- field? The field, you're in? You're one of the oldest field Agents Section Two's got, Cryan. Average age is twenty-three. You're a good five years older than that.”

“Don't remind me,” you joke.

“Be serious, for once,” she snaps. “Everything's a joke to you, isn't it?” If only she knew. If only she fucking knew, you want to laugh.

“Something's gotta be a joke,” you grin up at her from the bathroom counter. “'sides, this business is serious. Gotta laugh sometime, right?”

“But the way you find your laughs-” You cut her off swiftly, before she can begin questioning you. You don't want anyone inside your other than you and Lily, and Lily's only allowed because she's already there.

“You talk to the kids?” You question Misato. She looks at you, eyes inscrutable. You avert your own gaze, to stare at yourself in the mirror.

“Yeah,” she says quietly. “Shinji's being quiet, but then he's always quiet. Asuka is- she knows you got hit, but she hasn't told the others. She doesn't know how to take the fact you killed men to protect them. I don't, either, really.” You let that slide. Instead you try to look yourself in the eyes. For some reason, you can't, and deep in your gut, that bothers you.

“Mari is- She's locked in her room, listening to music. I think you should talk to them.” Probably, you silently agree.

“Has the pizza I promised 'em been ordered?”

“W-what are you talking about?” She asks, startled by your sudden change of subject.

“I promised the kids pizza. Has it been ordered yet?”

“No,” she says. “I don't think so. Your man Michael is on his way back, as well. He's finished with the police.”

“Good,” you say quietly, and begin dabbing blood off your side with a washcloth. You glance at the gray t-shirt lying on a pair of jeans on a toilet, then at Misato. She hasn't asked about any of your scars. That's good, you think. That means

“Can uh, can I get a few minutes, here? I'm sure my scars offer a fascinating and discerning insight into my past and who I am as a person and man, but I don't quite think you want to see all of them.”

She blushes and offers an excuse, before turning and leaving, closing the door behind her. You toss your now ruined shirt onto the floor, to be taken and thrown away later. She asked what kept you going. Lots and lots of coffee, alcohol, and a burning desire to- to what? You come up short. A burning desire to succeed? God and Lily know you've failed at that.

So what, then? What keeps you going? Is it a desire to protect the kids? That would make sense, but they're not even your kids. Is it all you know, now? All you know is the struggle, the fight to survive? No, you think. That's not it. It's from deeper than that instinctual hatred of failure, it's deeper than that loathing of not being on top, of not being the winner.

You struggle into the clean shirt, careful not to pop open your stitches, and then pull your pants on. Why do you keep getting up even after you've been shot, stabbed, burned, beaten?

Because you're Declan fucking Cryan, and there is either victory and success or there is a slow descent into nothingness as you scrabble to live. You need a fucking drink, you decide.

Stepping out of the bathroom, you're confronted with Misato looking at the only personal article you own, other than clothing- a picture of you with your mother, dated when you were thirteen and there was enough money to bake a cake.

“You were happy, weren't you?” She asks, and you wonder why she's trying to care, you're just supposed to be a faceless, nameless soldier, a rook to try and die for the goals of those above you. But you're not, really. You chose, when no one else would or could- you made a decision, didn't you?

“I was, yes,” you say quietly. You step behind her, take the picture from her hand, and place it face down on the dresser beside the bunk you were assigned.

“Are you happy now? Is there something you want to do with yourself?” Ha. Oh good God, the questions. Is she- is she trying to be a good leader?

“As long as the kids are fine” you say quietly, and then you step away, the moment- if there ever was one, gone. “Which one first?”

“Asuka. I'm worried about her more than the others- I've never seen her like this.”

“Okay,” you say, and after clipping your pistol to your belt, you head for the Second's room. You knock lightly, and when she grants access, you step inside quietly. She takes in your appearance, and instead of asking if you'd been to see Shinji first, she pulls her knees up to her chin and looks at you.

“What are you?” She asks quietly, hair hiding her eyes. “Yo- you killed those men like it was nothing.”

“I'm a- Well,” you try again. “Hmmm. Y'know, that's a good question. What am I? Science says I'm an adult human male, twenty-eight years of age, approximately one-hundred eighty-five centimeters, and ninety-two kilog-”

“Not that,” she interrupts coldly, some of the fire back. “I know you're a human male. When I arrived included in the welcome package was your file- heavily redacted, so I know you've got a general military background, but nothing beyond that and your physical characteristics, including scars. That means you were heavily combat-oriented, weren't you?”

You forgot she was a fucking college graduate. You forgot she helped with the fucking development of her own Evangelion unit, something about metaphysics and souls. Or something. What she's probably asking is how you were able to kill like it was ingrained instinct. (It was it is) you're assaulted by a sudden headache and the urge to hug her seizes you but you fight it off and force it back.

“It's my job,” you say simply, after a steadying breath. “Are you going to be okay or do you need a shoulder to cry on or something?” It comes out harsher than intended, and perhaps Asuka senses it, because instead of attacking you or yelling, she shrugs.

“I think I'll be okay,” she says noncommittally.

“That's good. If you do want to talk, man to man or whatever you think you need, my door will be open.” You stand, pat her on the knee gently, and leave her room, carefully stretching, mindful of your new stitches. You wonder what painkillers you could get a prescription for.

Speaking of training I think it would be a good idea if we spent some time training asuka in leadership skills so that she can become the teamleader of sorts among the children. It would help them to work together as a team.

I think Lily mentioned that we could take the lance out of her and use that but we would suffer for doing so. I think the Declan we watched getting killed didn't have the lance and thus had no real way of harming the evas/angels.

See what someone proposed earlier.

We go to NERV, ask them about the effects of romance on Pilot performance if they inquire as to why, then we tell them about trying to get Shinji a girlfriend.
If they decline, we use that as an excuse to shut off the relationship with Mari, if they accept, then we bring up the possibility of a relationship with Mari if she goes and files the paperwork.

This way we cut out the waifufagging and make it something professional.

>Shinji next

You figure Shinji probably needs the most help. When you get to his room, you're right. He's lying curled up on his side, facing a window, music player in his ears. You sit on the bed, next to him, and your weight shifting the mattress brings him back to the real world. He sits up and looks at you.

And then you wrap him up in the biggest fucking hug you can manage, trying to squeeze the life out of him. And that's when Shinji realizes while you're a big man, at least in Japan, and while you're not the biggest man out there, you're fucking /strong/. He starts trying to hit you on the back, to get you off of him, but you've seen him die too many fucking times you've killed him, some of them, gunned down not in cold blood but with love in a misguided attempt to save the world you're

You let him go, then, and he looks at you. “Are you okay?” He asks warily.

“Of course,” you give him an easy grin. “I'm great.” You don't tell him he landed a fist on your stitches and now they hurt worse than ever. “Anything on your mind you wanna talk about?”

“Yes,” Shinji says. “Girls.” Oh. Ohohoho, he's skipping over your escapades and wants to talk women.

“What's there to talk about, then, man?” He's killed giant monsters that make you want to curl into a ball and blubber for your mother, he's as much a man as you.

“Asuka,” he says. “She's confusing. One minute she's trying to cling to me, the next she's yelling at me about something stupid. And she says I apologize too much.” You toss an arm around his shoulder, and pull him close.

“You gotta look at it from her point of view- where she comes from, men are big and strong and not afraid to yell at people. Sort of like me. But you- you're quiet and unassuming and not willing to make waves. And then the Angels come along, and you're suddenly kicking all sorts of ass. She can't make heads or tails of you, so she's trying to bait you into reacting, so she can judge.” You think. Your subconscious seems to be telling you that that's the most common and correct read of the situation.

“You think?” You nod, and stand.

“Yeah,” you grin at him. “I think so. There's pizza on the way- why don't you go claim the television before either of the girls can?”

He grins back up at you, and after giving you a swift hug, heads for the living room. Mari's last. And that's a problem. How to approach her?

>Matter of fact and upfront

Mari's room is across the hall from Shinji's. It's a simple matter to follow him out the door, take two steps, knock once, and listen. No answer comes. She's seen you almost kill, before. Smith, in Nevada. She saw you at your worst, then. The brutality of desperate hand to hand, scrabbling for a gun or knife in close quarters, no friend to come up and shoot the bastard in the back for you.

She saw you at your best, then, too, as you threw yourself against a man more rested, more awake, more aware than you. She saw you come out on top, then, as your fury and hate spat defiance, as you did not go quietly into the night.

You knock again when there's no answer. So you try the doorknob. It doesn't open. You're glad you went with a Western style house for the Children, even if now it means you've got to pick Mari's lock. So you do. Do you feel guilt, about it? Some. But it's got to be done.

You step inside, and she's curled up on her bed, much like Shinji. Instead of classical music, however, she's listening to something metal and angry and ugly. You tap her shoulder. She looks up at you, startled, and then she glances at the door. You're blocking it, by keeping her on the bed simply by standing where you are.

“Declan,” she greets neutrally.

“Mari,” you greet as well. “How you holding up?”

“It's different,” she says. “It's different when it's right in front of you and then you get shot, you bastard.”

(1/2)
>>
Well, technically,” you start, “my parents were married when I was born, but I never knew my father, so I suppose it's applicable,” you grin at her easily.

“I don't mean that, you prick,” she says in that easy almost-London accent of hers.

“What did you mean, then?”

“It's different, seeing the reality of your job up close. I don't like it,” she tries. “With the Evangelion, at least it's not people.” You don't tell her that as soon as the Angels are killed (if it happens will it happen or will they all die trying just like you) the children will probably be used as tools of war.

The funny thing is that security continues to be rather unrealistic as seen with this latest shoot out. Only Declan was acting as security for the 3 pilots while the rest of section 2 was god knows where. They should have at least had some guys in unmarked vehicles following around Declan for backup or something, especially since this isn't the first attack on them.

We should just say fuck realism and just move Rei in with the rest so she gets some screen time with the rest of the pilots.

On a semi-related note we should take the kids out to learn how to operate. We promised Rei interrogation techniques and promised both Shinji and Mari shooting lessons.

“I don't like it either, truthfully.” Sometimes you wonder if that is the truth. You're good at it. Why not enjoy what you do? Because down that path lies psychopathy, homicidal tendencies, and dark, dark parts of one's psyche best left buried.

“It's rough, sometimes. But someone's gotta do it. It's my reason for being here- that's the tall and the short of it.” Isn't it, though? Best inside joke you've ever told, and you can't even tell anyone. Joke's on you, Dec. Joke's on you.

“Okay,” she says. “While you're here and not running from whatever it is you're running from, let's talk.” That's ominous. How does she know you're running? (baby you were born to run and the highway's jammed with broken heroes just like you)

“What do you want to talk about?” You ask tentatively, worried about the answer. You were right to worry.

“Us,” she says. “I understand why you're worried about a relationship with me- you're twenty-eight and you've seen the world and you know how unfair life can be,” don't you just, though? “And I'm fourteen and a school-girl and I want the basis of our relationship to be the fact you were there for me and I must seem incredibly naive to you, don't I?” Yes, you don't answer. Instead you shrug.

“But I can't keep waiting- Shinji is- interesting,” Mari tries. “Besides, that Suzuhara fellow in class is kind of handsome,” she grins at you. “More than you, anyway.” You ponder that, then shrug again.

Y'know they're eternal and unaging now that they've piloted the things, right? Assuming they live through this, they'll outlast all of us.

Plus, they're really the only ones that can relate to each other. They're the only ones that have the experience of climbing into biomechanical war machines powered by souls and despair, and going forth to do battle.

They're the only ones who have tasted their own blood mixing with the LCL in their entry plug, as something unearthly tries to kill them, and put an end to all that they love.

Who the hell else are they going to pair up with?

And that's a re-build only thing isn't it?
>>
To all of you arguing about whether you should pair off pilots or not, remember this: They are teenagers with all kinds of fucking things going around in their heads. Not to mention all of their complexes. Just remember, they are all kinds of fucked up, and you should only let their interactions happen naturally, no shepherding them to be couples. So, would you kindly shut the fuck up.

“Cool it for now, Fourth. You've got time. 'sides, you need to rethink throwing yourself at a man over a decade older than you. If you like Shinji, you might have to fight Asuka for him. Or at least work out a schedule,” you grin at her. She smiles back, and punches your shoulder.

“I don't think I'll be able to talk to her about that kind of thing,” she says. You shrug in response.

“I understand you're related, and I understand you've got issues, or your families do, at least, but for the sake of the mission, put 'em aside. Next time I talk to the Second, I'll be telling her the same. Got it?”

“Got it, chief,” she says.

“Sides,” you say again. “I wouldn't suggest getting involved with anyone in Tokyo-3. Angel attacks are too random and deadly to try a romantic relationship. Be friends, live, laugh, have fun. Make the most of it,” you echo your subconscious' words to you. “It's not every day you get to drive a giant cyborg that's humanity's hatred and fury given form, with which to do battle against that which threatens us all.”

“You're right,” she says, giving you a slow smile. “I've got more Angel kills than you do.” You stiffen ever so slightly as the memories try to overwhelm you, but you force them back down and force a grin yourself.

“You're right,” you repeat. “There's pizza on the way. Get out of here and go find something to drink and tell Shinji I said to share the TV, but he's got final say on what's to be watched.” Mari bounds off the bed and leaves her music player behind. You turn and look out her window, and wonder why. Shrugging once more, you turn and head for the kitchen/dining room, where your Laphroig is hidden.

On one hand, you want, need, long for a drink. On the other, you ARE a role model, however bad at it you are, to the kids. Plus, the Laphroig doesn't deserve to be taken with pizza, especially Japanese pizza. So you compromise. You'll drink the whisky after you eat some pizza. The delivery boy finally shows up (he's the son of a Section Two agent and there's designated marksmen watching him from the roofs of the buildings across the street)

After the kids sit down with their pizza and Rei shows up, invited by Shinji, you call a man about another man.

“Dick,” you say, and there's no playing now. “I need you to do me a favor. Can you track the hit that was put on a Section Two Agent earlier and fumbled?”

“Declan, my boy, your tab's all paid up.” You won't be having any really good whisky, like the thirty or forty year stuff for a while, but it was worth it to get Tricky Dicky off your back. “Of course I can, for such a fantastic patron of my establishment as you.”

“Thanks, Dick,” you say. “Listen, I'll meet you for the information. Just call me when you've got it and we'll set it up then, all right?”

“Can do, Dec. Can do.” You hang up almost simultaneously, and once your phone's slipped into your pocket, you lean back against the wall of the living room while the kids watch their movie. That's taken care of. Now you need to see if you can find what Smith had to say to his interrogators, see what the Hell the Russians are doing, and try to come up with a way for the Supreme Commander to approve letting the kids learn at least hand to hand, if not how to shoot.

The pizza is Pizza Hut in Japan. It's acceptable, if not as good as true Italian pizza baked for you by a grateful grandmother in her brick oven, but it'll do. It'll do. The movie on TV is some sort of action romance, and while not entirely applicable to your life, you wonder if one of the kids is playing a joke on you.

Let 'em, you figure. It'll be good for them to have some fun every one in a while.

It's a bit like Apples to Apples, with one card that has a blank to fill, and cards you play to fill in the blank.

Except people can get a prompt like:

"What ended my last relationship?"

And they'll answer

"An Oedepus Complex."

Or, y'know "A Big Black Dick"

Or "Pac-Man uncontrollably guzzling cum."
>>
>none of these answers are Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder or Shadowrun or World of Darkness

>>
>>34197442
Why not DMSO and herione?
>>
>>34197472

Because grinding up heroines to put in your squirtguns will offend their fans.

Efficiency? LD50 for arsenic or maybe nicotine is pretty low. And DMSO makes the onset time for the drugs almost immediate, IIRC. That means just a little sprinkling of arsenic translates to instant death from heavy metal toxicity. And drug filters or whatever implants won't help against it.

>Talk to Captain Katsuragi about a boardgame

“Captain,” you say. “May I speak with you?” Misato looks up at you from her beer, and shrugs.

“Sure,” she says. She stands and follows you into the kitchen, where you snag your bottle of Laphroig. Pouring yourself a drink, you lean against a counter and look at her. She looks at you, and then you smile.

“Kids need to learn to work as a team, don't they?”

“Yes... What does this have to do with anything?” She looks at you questioningly. You grin.

“Well, obviously we can't force them into a live-fire exercise. That would be stupid,” despite that you've participated in several over the years and only been harmed twice. “So I was thinking, why not a tabletop role-playing game? It won't hurt, they'll be able to work together, and build trust in each other.”

“Is that what you did in the SAS?”

“No,” you grin wolfishly. “We ran live fire exercises against other regiments in the service.” She looks decidedly uneasy at that, but shrugs.

“I'll... Consider it.” She looks around, twice, then leans in closer to you and takes another sip from her beer. “Can you tell me if you've ever met a man named Kaji Ryoji?”

You wonder why she'd ask that. But you shrug. “Yeah, I ran into him on the carrier, bringing Mari over. Why?”

“What was your opinion of him?” Eying Misato closer, you realize she's more drunk than she appears- she must have been at it since as soon as she cornered you in the bathroom.

“Man to man? A decent enough sort, I suppose. I only met the man once. The stubble was annoying, though. Looked like it'd chafe, y'know?”

She nods at that, in apparent agreement. “But from the viewpoint of the professional I know you CAN be when you want to?”

“He seemed well-versed in investigation, however, that's not my field and he may have been intentionally misleading,” you begin. “That said, as a threat? He's good with his gun of choice- I could read it in his eyes. Always the eyes,” you add thoughtfully. “I could probably take him in hand to hand- not just the height and weight advantage, but I've got more aggression than he does, and in a fight, anger is as good as courage. With firearms, I'd attempt to take him from behind. I wouldn't want to risk him getting a piece of me, but I suppose I could risk a frontal assault if I had to.”

“Other than that stubble, really, he seemed like an alright chap to me,” you finish. “Why?”

“We were... We knew each other, once,” Misato says quietly. “I was wondering if he'd changed any. I can't tell from what you've said, though.”

“How many years was it? It's a good chance he has. Unless you were dating and it ended badly. In my experience resuming those generally doesn't lead anywhere good,” you tell her. Granted your experience isn't all that much recently, considering EVENTS, but it's still the thought that counts, right?

“It was... An odd situation,” she explains. You shrug. You could probably pry, and she might answer, but she might not.

Dwarf Fortress requires ACTIVE sadism and disregard for the values of life, effort, and safety.
PASSIVE disregard will not suffice.

Though we should get her into Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. If scient and kryub survived second impact, their AI patches make the game a lot more playable.

You dense or something? The whole "Rei won't do anything unless ordered" is getting old, she's a downbeat stoic who doesn't think fun things are fun, not a goddamned robot.

Difference is that she can be introduced to the concept of such a game, and we can see if it plays on her sensibilities, helping others. The game gives her a systematic way to act out this.

The game isn't necessarily about killing or murder, it's also about diplomacy, establishing relations and controlling. No Rei doesn't like the idea of killing people, and let me tell you, few people do.

However, some time it's necessary, and you bet that Rei sees that easily.

(If she has some kind of controlling instinct over humanity as Lilith, let's see how this plays out)

>>34198626

“If you wanna talk about it,” you begin slowly. You're not used to talking to girls about their bad break ups. Generally you would find them at bars before they got all the way-drunk, smooth talk 'em, and let them take you home. “I'm right here. If not, I reckon I'll go check on the kids.”

“We can talk about it,” she says. “I just need a minute. Go ahead and check on the kids.” You sketch a salute with your drink glass and slalom your way back to the living room. Mari is passed out on the floor, Rei is sitting next to her, still watching the movie, Shinji is asleep on the couch, and Asuka is sprawled across the rest of it and Shinji. Rei glances up at you, you nod at each other, and she goes back to the movie. Good girl, that. Never in trouble. Not like you, you're always in trouble of one sort or another.

When you make it back to the kitchen, Misato is sitting on a counter, petting her penguin. He glances at you, you exchange looks with him, and then he nods slowly. You lean against a wall, and pour yourself another drink.

“We... Dated in college,” she begins, around some blockage in her throat. Probably a sob. “It was great- it was the best time of my life. But we broke up because he wouldn't say three words,” she chokes, and you take a drink.

“He was like you are. Kind, always with a nice word for someone looking down-” but you're not, not really you're one of the most selfish bastards out there, forcing the kids to relive this over and over and over- “And he didn't hesitate to get into scraps on my behalf or a total stranger's. But he couldn't say the words-”

(1/2)
>>
“I can guess which words,” you say dryly, hiding your frown behind your glass.

“I told him there was another man-” Ouch. “There wasn't, of course.” Figures. He was afraid of commitment so instead of trying to work it out she ran. Shit sucks, but shit happens, you figure. You take another drink.

Misato pulls the penguin (he's a total bro, you decide) to her chest and hugs him tightly, and you pour yourself your third drink of the night.

>Pour a drink for the penguin.

Moving to a cabinet, you pour yourself one last drink, then put the rest of the bottle into a second and third tumbler. You hand one to Misato, and she looks up at you gratefully, and hand the other to the penguin, which manages to grasp hold with both flippers.

“So what's up with the penguin?” You change the subject, hoping it'll get her mind off her former man.

“I rescued him from a laboratory dedicated to genetic experimentation that had been shut down,” Misato responds. “Penpen is one of my closest friends.”

“I had a dog, once.” You don't elaborate on what happened to the dog. “I liked him and he liked me, and we got along pretty decent.”

“That's good. Animals are good for kids,” she comments idly. “Do you think I should get the kids a dog or a cat?”

“Not really,” you say from behind your tumbler. You finish your drink, and then take an ice cube and put it into your mouth, crunching it between your teeth. “If you do, though. Get a cat, they're more independent and likely to survive if something happens to me.”

“Do you think something will happen to you?” You shrug.

(1/2)
>>
“Probably,” you say uneasily. You don't want to remember, and God, Lily, you try to say to her silently, if she ever loved you (does she love you you don't want to think about that that would be ten kinds of fucked up) she had best be keeping those memories at bay. “I'm expendable- doubly more so than you, and ten times more than those Children, in there. Those kids are priceless, in every sense of the word. I'd sell my soul to keep them safe.” You don't tell her that in all likelihood you have. After all, what's a few potential psyche-shattering secrets between friends?

“I understand,” Misato says. Does she? Does she really understand? You don't react. “Do you ever wonder what kind of legacy you're leaving behind?”

>>
>>34199365
[X]”Not really. The future is the future- all I can do now is try to protect those kids.”
The best legacy is the one that pisses off the things trying to kill you.
>>
>

“Not really,” you say grimly. “People with pasts like mine- we generally don't leave behind anything good, but the future is the future- all I can do now is try to protect those kids from the men that would be monsters.” You don't tell her that your life is for them- they deserve better than the hand they've been dealt.

“I see,” she says quietly. Then she stands with care, and walks over to you, where she leans up and pecks you on the cheek. “Good night, Declan. Thank you,” she says with a smile, and then she's gone, smelling of honeysuckle and pure femininity, and you long to touch a woman that's real.

Shaking your head to clear your nose and your thoughts, you toss the rest of the ice in your tumbler into your mouth, crunching it. Filling the tumbler with tap water, you down it, and repeat a few more times, hoping you won't wake up with a headache. In the living room, Rei is sitting quietly, and the movie's gone off.

“Go to sleep, Rei,” you tell her. “I'll be up for a while more. You're safe here.”

“Yes Agent Cryan,” she says, and leans back against the couch. Trotting to a linen closet, you fetch extra blankets and drape all the Children with them, turning off the television and the lights. Then you retreat to upstairs, devoid of life save Misato and the Section Two agents, and find a window to stare out.

(1/2)
>>
You wonder what kind of legacy you could have left behind if you hadn't been a soldier. A Nobel Peace Prize? Professional rugby awards? A legacy of learning and healing? Surely not the blood-spattered hallway that's simply a circle you dare not tread at night, lest you go mad. But sanity never worked before? Would going mad be the answer?

No, you finally decide. Down the path of madness lies fear and shattered dreams and hate and fury, and you can harness your hate and fury, hate at the situation in general, fury at what you've done. You're not a happy person, you realize there in the dark room Shinji calls his own, as you stare out a window, watching a cat prowl across the street. But nor are you hateful- you simply are what you are. And that, you decide, might be what the kids need to protect them.
