You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

The isle of Manhattan roars in your ears. It was a little disorientating, at first – the collective screech of thousands of tires and hundreds of impatient horns snapped and popped back and forth through your skull, like fireworks. But eventually you learned to mediate the din, resolving one sound from another, and keep your attention from spiralling in a million directions at once.

You buy a cheap hotdog at a street corner, delighted to find that the guy running the stall seemed to have a policy of sparing no mustard. It’s 15%, maybe a full 20%, less stringy that Queens hotdogs, and if you’re not mistaken, you can taste WAY less sweat, hair, and other miscellaneous filth (once you think you tasted a hint of rat, a few years back. You stopped eating from that stall). Score.

Munching happily on your processed meat and mostly-bread, you fish your phone from your back pocket, juggling thoughts to and fro through your brain. You’ve been meaning to give Victoria a call, you’re just not entirely sure what to say. The Soylent Green approach seems a little inappropriate in her case. Victoria was never an addict – she liked people to think she was, it made her fit in – but she did used to steal trace amounts of Jack, to take before you guys would… you know… do stuff.

Whatever. You punch the number in and wait. Normally you’d take seat, but the curbs in this part of the city are kinda busy, so you’ll just have to walk and talk.

Eventually, the ringing stops, and you hear someone fumbling with the receiver.

“…JJ?” She sounds kinda out of breath.

Oh very true, I have though to that, but I think JJ would worry about that anyway.

Plus it'd be funny to have JJ go from fear-stricken paranoia to red faced imagining his ex getting railed by some else and maybe add a little bit of character development about his current opinion of Victoria.

I fucked that up.

I meant that I did think of that, but I believe JJ would get paranoid about Creeper or her running from somebody anyway.

“Um, hey, Victoria.” Your throat is lumps. Man, you used to be good at talking to this person. “Out for a run?”

“Yeah…?” She’s silent for a moment, the instance beginning to drag, before you realize that that was one of those yeahs with a question mark at the end. She swoops in to keep things going just as you’re about to respond. “What’s up?” You can hear the frown in her voice. “Is this going to be another talk about the dangerous direction my life is headed in?”

“Uh, no, it's not…” Wait. “…Yeah. Kinda.” You hear her sigh, and hurriedly add: “But it’s different, I mean, this is stuff that’s actually happening.”

A door clicks open in the background. You think you hear her kicking off her sneakers.

“Okay, sure.” She doesn’t sound all too convinced. Hopefully that will change.

“Look, there’s this… thing…” You dodge around the subject of the Jack for now. “…going on, and it’s about to bring a lot of shit down on everyone in the game. There’s going to be a lot of angry mutants going after anyone remotely involved in Jack production pretty damn soon, and I don’t think you want to be in the middle of that.” You swallow. “…And, I guess, I don’t want you in the middle of that.”

“…This has something to do with Creeper’s place, doesn’t it?” She asks, eventually, a jaundiced tone creeping into her voice. “The one of the news? The one I…” And you get the impression that she’s chiding herself inwardly here. “…told you about. Right?”

“Yeah.” You respond. What else is there to say? “Look… I know… this probably sounds like I’m about to mess up your life again, or something… but I wouldn’t be doing any of this stuff if it wasn’t really important.”

Quiet.

“…You didn’t mess up my life, JJ. You broke up with me. It happens.” She clears her throat, and you hear her running jacket sloughing off her shoulders. “You did it without saying anything, just upped and left, and that was pretty shitty”– haha yes you suppose that was but hey let’s not dwell on the past yeah? –“but it wasn’t the worst. Do I really need to keep my head down a while?”

“Yes.” You say, nodding for some reason. “You really do.”

“Alright. Stay safe, JJ.” She pauses, and adds: “You know, if you ever need a place to hunker down, I have somewhere now…”

You do that thing, that thing where you sort of hiss a breath in through your teeth.

“Tempting…” It’d be like old times. Sort of. Minus Creeper, of course, and some other stuff. “…But that could get us both in a lot of trouble. Maybe when this whole thing blows over.”

It’s not going to blow over. It’s going to explode and fill your ass with shrapnel. You think she can probably tell it, too, maybe from the tone of your voice. Maybe from the general weirdness of the call.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” She chuckles, as if that’s sort of funny. “See you.”

“See you, Victoria. Stay safe.”

She hangs up. The phone feels kind of warm and prickly in your hands, and you just stare at it for a while, before checking the time and getting on your way.

You’ve got an hour and three quarters before you need to be at the Tabbycat. Time to spare, time to waste…

>[X] Get there early to talk to Ms. Hardy.

You sigh to yourself, the noise lost amid the bustle of Manhattan. You guess it’s time to bite the Hardy bullet, isn’t it? Or the... riding crop, probably. Something like that.

Finding a discreet alley (much harder than you’d like in this part of the city), you take flight, making a bounding leap up the side of some big grey office block. You shoot up into the sky and spread your wings, coasting on the breeze. You don’t hurry, making sure to keep yourself cloaked from skyward eyes (though, really, who looks up anyway?), but you find yourself making good time, Brooklyn soon spreading out beneath you like… honestly kinda like a big brown stain.

You swoop down onto the roof of a squat apartment block and shift your form back into that of a land-animal. Taking a moment to shrug on your hoodie, you descend to the streets via a nearby fire escape and make your way on foot from there.

The evening is deepening as you approach the Tabbycat, the shadows of the two, sphinx-like statues at its front sprawling out across the road, as if basking in the falling light. You approach the broad shouldered bouncer (a different guy from last time, you think) with no small amount of trepidation, briefly entertaining the thought that Hardy, in a fit of vindictiveness, could have issued the order to drop you on your ass on sight.

He doesn’t hit you, however. Just regards you with a big, looming scowl.

“Um…” It’s weird. Big people never stop being intimidating. You could probably throw this guy across the street, then roll him up into a ball and juggle his ass up and down town, but he’s big and that makes you nervous. It just hits some gibbering, animal aspect of you. “…I’m here to see Ms. Hardy. I had a… a meeting with her… a while back…”

He doesn’t stop scowling. Instead he sort of… smiles and scowls at the same time. Which is good but confusing.

“A’right.” He steps minutely aside. “In you go. I’ll be checkin’ up, makin’ sure you ain’t lying your ass off.”

You nod lots and lots and head in, through the dim, musky red entranceway, into the dark of the club. It’s quieter than you remember it being, just one attendant at the bar, customers smattered sparingly throughout the tables off to the right. Rolling a bit of awkwardness off your shoulders (a bit, not all of it), you approach the bar. The young blonde behind the counter raises an eyebrow at your sunglasses in doors and general state of attire, but doesn’t say anything.

Not as unlikely as you think. They probably went about dissecting mutants that had control over their powers looking for a means to harness it and from their they created a synthetic compound that can curb unstable mutations.

“Uh… hey.” You swallow. “I’m looking for Ms. Hardy.”

She pauses, a little taken aback, and looks you over once more. “Are you sure?”

Oh for Christ’s… “Yeah. I’m sure.”

You actually felt your claws popping out a little there. Down, boys, not now…

“I… I guess I’ll go get her for you, Mr…?”

“Green.”

She scurries off, leaving you feeling about the right amount of insulted and out-of-place. The minutes tick by, you doing little else but shuffling nervously from one foot to the other, before you spy Ms. Hardy, her heels picking at the floor as she goes, descending the spiral stairs leading up to the raised veranda above. She’s not glaring at you, but her expression is not happy. In fact, you can’t tell at all what she’s thinking – she’s a blank.

“Mr. Green.” She states, as she saunters toward you. “How strange. First you vanish, and your friend comes to explain your absence. Then she begins to miss shifts, and you turn up. I don’t suppose she’ll be here tonight?”

Oh man you kinda forgot that Laura held down a job here for a while.

“Well…”

Hold up. IS she going to turn up tonight? You kinda assumed she’d gone into, like, deep shadow mode after the incident at Creeper’s compound. Deepest shadow.

“…She’s dealing with these really… these really persistent stalkers.” You’re grinning. Why are you grinning? It’s technically the truth, after all. It’s not all of the truth, but you can’t exactly tell Ms. Hardy that you’ve been sucked into an action movie and the finale is yet to play. “So, yeah, she’s having to take a few days off…”

You can tell that Ms. Hardy believes absolutely none of that. 0%. Maybe less than zero, like negative twelve or something. She leans against the bar, watching you carefully.

“Interesting.” She says, in the most dismissive fashion possible. “I don’t suppose you came all the way here to tell me that?”

Uh…

“No… not exactly…” You slow down to stop yourself from gibbering. It’s not easy. “I was supposed to meet someone here… and I thought I’d take the chance to apologize to you myself. For being a no-show.”

She nods in silence, looking you up and down with narrowed eyes.

“Well.” She smiles thinly. “I suppose that’s something. I thought I’d seen the last of you.” Her smile broadens, filling out her expression in a wry, predatory fashion. “Seeing as you have business here, I assume you paid the entrance fee?”

“Uh…”

You squirm. She watches, a perverse sort of enjoyment evident in her eyes.

“Um… Well… y-yeah that…” Oh, man, no, you can’t lie. She knows. She knows.

You hang your head a little. “Nope. How much is it?”

She laughs under her breath. “A significant amount. My clientele generally have a great deal of spending money. I could waive it for tonight, however…” You brighten up a little. That’s pretty cool of her. “…assuming you can pay some other way.”

She winks. Which is not something you thought you’d ever see.

“Uh… I guess I could…” You think. You think. You’ve got lots of superpowers, right? Surely one of them has some kind of use here… “I could…”

After a moment, she furrows her brow, her icy tone slipping in to cut you free from your internal debate:

“Mr. Green, I’m asking you to play. Tonight.”

Oh. Right. Yeah, that makes much more sense.

“Oh.” Oh, yeah. You feel a little sheepish now. A little more sheepish. “Yeah, I can…” You feel your fingers flex experimentally. “…I can do that.”

“Wonderful.” She says, smirking. “If you’ll follow me, then…”

She directs you not up the stairs, as you were expecting, but down to the side of the club, near the padded alcoves set along the walls. The piano set under the shadow of the veranda is not quite the specimen as the one upstairs, a little less tutored in years and stately in fashion, but it still has the dominating presence of an old instrument. You feel that strange, sacred sense of calm upon it, radiating off its panelling, like cool, sweet tea, like the view from the dunes…

“My benefactor”– Silvermane. The super-duper criminal. –“isn’t here tonight, so there’d no need to put on airs.”

You flinch uncomfortably as she steps behind you, laying her fingers across your shoulders. The feeling lingers for a moment, but ebbs gradually away, the warmth of her hands transforming into something vaguely reassuring. You feel almost like a child.

“Okay…” You say. You don’t know what else to.

Sending a text to Remy informing him of where you’ll be, you sit down before the altar of the piano, the holy warmth suffusing you. You breathe in its aged scent, slipping off your gloves and slowly, respectfully, running your fingers along the keys. You feel it awaken.

You take a deep breath.

You hold the breath in your lungs, your thoughts clearing, the misshapen clutter of the world retracting. There are no footsteps outside, there is no breath in Ms. Hardy’s lungs, there is no laughter upstairs, no skitter of dice, nothing between you and greatness. You are nervous, but composed, your fingers settling into place, shoulders straightening – you feel the change rush through you, climbing the arch of your being, righting you.

You step into your true shape.

The first note ignites in your breath. You feel yourself fall into it. You don’t even know what you’re playing until you’ve begun, you construct the piece around its base components, the intrinsic shards of hope and passion that hold it together. Rachmaninoff dips into your soul and courses through you, like lightning through a storm rod, galvanising, bringing life, converting wonder from the raw bones of silence – it’s alive, it’s alive!

You play.

What is JJ's darkest secret?

>17

It tugs you up, it tugs you down, it tugs you to and fro and storms about you. You don’t control it, only ease its passage into the world, unfurling-creating it, giving it purchase on the existence of solid things. Eventually it perishes from the world in the closing of the final notes, but you keep going. You invoke Schubert, ignoring the table on the far side of the club, where a man in a ridiculous costume rises to drunkenly request that you “play Free Bird.”

He doesn’t exist. They don’t exist.

You don’t realize it until you’re a parade of notes in, but your two hands are doing the work of four, skipping between keys with incredible celerity. The feeling swelling in your chest, you let it roar in you, let it tread sharply-softly from your fingertips. You don’t know how long you keep going – you play anything that comes to mind, anything at all, often before you even know you're summoning it. You recall the spirit of Liszt, and of Horowitz, and Rubinstein – you even dredge up a bit of that bad jazz that comprised the entirety of your adolescent rebellion.

It flows and flows, and comes and goes, and rises and falls…

“Gotta say, mon ami…” You blink. Part of the world, the substance world, intrudes into your universe of beauty. “…I never took you for the type.”

Remy leans against the side of the instrument, grinning down at you.

You… you guess you’ve been playing for a while.

>[ ] Explain that you were roped into it.

JJ was already pretty good pianist, but with all his powers combined his music could be considered supernatural.

Just imagine how he'll play at Agility 4 and with that muscle memory ability... he could copy pieces on youtube, and play them expertly without ever having to look at a sheet.
>>
>>34168296
Nah. Slower and less formal. Basically JJ stops thinking or caring about what he's playing. He just keeps his hands moving while talking and this comes out.

Was going to say we should reserve that for any JJ-Laura spawn, then realized just how broken a mutant that could manifest any power their subconscious tacked on to their self image would be. I now suspect JJ is going to turn out to be sterile, or already have a kid somewhere.

>>
>[X] Keep going, you can easily talk while you play.

You’re smiling. You can’t seem to tuck it away, either.

“Yeah.” You admit. “I guess I’m not the spitting image of the great composer.”

You don’t stop, of course. You’re enjoying yourself. You shift your posture to face Remy, letting one hand idle while your other continues to crackle to and fro across the piano, bespelling it with the erratic energy of that old jazz that enchanted you in your youth. The older man tips his shades – revealing bright, searing red irises mired in solid black sclera – as if to say “well, you’re just showing off, now.”

He’s somewhat right. Somewhat. Showing off would be Liszt. You think, with your newfound dexterity, you might even be able to pull a duet off one-handed. It wouldn’t be easy, but it might be possible.

“Well, we all a lil’ rough round the edges.” Says Remy, fishing through his long coat. Eventually he draws a long, thin slip of laminated paper – one of the tickets, you presume – and sets it down in the piano.

“That’s yours, homme. Best look after it.” He stuffs his hands back in his pockets, possibly a little furtively, and regards your piano-playing hand once gain. “Where’d you learn this stuff?”

You smile secretively, the dunes whispering in your ears.

“In a house overlooking a lake.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------

>HMQ84: END

>Congratulations! X-Point!

>>34169842
I don't think so. Didn't CJ say that small animals accept JJ eating other animals as just nature?

There's no reason why he would. His instincts tell him that meat is fucking delicious and there's an easy way to acquire meat without killing them yourself.

>>
>>34169899

So?

21 fucking points.
>>
>>34169896
GENETIC MIMICRY
JJ may consume the genetic material of others to take on aspects of their appearance, and even mannerisms.
>Level 1: After consuming a small amount of blood, saliva, or another genetic sample of a being, JJ may temporarily take on some of their minor aesthetic traits. He cannot become them, but he can take on their hair color and type/ethnicity/eye color/etc.
>Level 2: JJ may now shift fully into an exact copy of a human being whose DNA he has recently sampled. This change only lasts for a matter of minutes.
>Level 3: JJ may now maintain the change for an hour.
NOTE: Crusty said that level 1 lasts longer than Levels 2 & 3.
>>
>>34169876
>have a conversation with a pig about how nice weather is

>>
>>34169771
me too me too
>>
>>34169863

This. Too many points for too little immediate payoff, and right now JJ is in a position where he needs as much personal power as he can get.

>>34169899

If there ever came a time where JJ actually managed to hold onto some measure of stability and wasn't leaping into the deep end of the pool, then maybe I could support focusing more on passive/support abilities. Trying to convince people to get better at growing vegetables while Creeper is out there somewhere turning mutants into drugs and the organization that made Laura is on the prowl is an uphill battle you're not likely to win.
>>
>>34169906
Then why does anyone want to talk to animals. Animals are fucking stupid and wouldn't be able to help us at all.
>>
>>34169745
Just because animals can communicate, that doesn't mean that the meat in the store shelves can.

Especially considering JJ's carnivorous urges, it's HIGHLY unlikely that he'd quit meat completely.
>>
>people bringing in pol tier logical fallacies

I'm just glad all this sperging, bullshit, and bile waited till the end of the thread
>>
>>34169943
ELECTROSTATIC CLOUD GENERATION
JJ’s pores may emit a thick cloud of charged particles that visibly obfuscate him, interfere with electronic detection, and can eventually be used offensively.
>Level 1: JJ may slowly emit roughly three square meters of charged particulates. This area essentially acts as chaff, disrupting electronic signals and targeting.
>Level 2: JJ may more quickly emit roughly six square meters of charged particles. They become more strongly ionized, making it even more difficult for electronics to be of use within that radius.
>Level 3: JJ may direct the cloud as a stream or a gust, allowing him to selectively dampen or short electronics on a specific target. Additionally, the charge can be focused on objects within the cloud, causing them to explosively short out.
NOTE: Even level 1 would stop the signals from tracking devices or cell phones near JJ. (Invisibility level 5 does not)
>>
>>34169827
I was talking genetic mimicry, and I think most anons assumed Healing Vitae wouldn't need to be ingested to heal a wound, the ingestion just boosts healing of the natural body altogether, otherwise how the fuck would we know it heals anyone? Other then if some came loose and spilled on someone?
>>
>>34169906
humans already empathize with animals, how bad would it get if we could actually hold a conversation with one?
>>
>>34169943
but it seams that power would manifest if we were ashamed of being a mutie. but jj thinks its great, just the world sucks. it just doesn't seam like something he would develop its out of chater like dragon breath

>>34169986

Rat swarms.

There's a lot of shit you can do with animal affinity.
>>
>>34170016

I trust that Crusty could come up with a non-contrived way to reveal to JJ that his blood has healing properties, but I sure as hell can't.
>>
>>34170014
this is actually one dam cool utility
>>
>>34169986
To use as scouts? As spies? Information gathering? To get Green Finger? Just because they aren't anymore intelligent doesn't mean there wouldn't be a benefit or control over them.
>>
>>34170014
It's an activated ability and not a passive one, so it's not a very good one.
Not to mention when it's activated, you can't use the phone to call.
>>
>>34170022

Talking to animals does NOT make them loyal to us. It says it right in the power description that it we can't make an animal do something it doesn't want to do.

And if we need an information network we could just call Chat.
>>
>>34170153

because TOTALLY Chat is available 24/7 and TOTALLY is down for dangerous shit
>>
>>34170014
To finish it off.

ANIMAL AFFINITY
JJ develops the ability to communicate with and command fauna.
>Level 1: JJ may understand the basic gist of what an animal is conveying. He may suggest actions but not compel them.
>Level 2: JJ may entirely understand ‘animal-speak’. Smaller land bound animals almost automatically trust him and are more suggestible.
>Level 3: JJ may sense nearby wildlife. Airborne animals and large land bound animals almost automatically trust him and are more suggestible. JJ may emit a loud noise that acts as a ‘beacon’ to chosen creatures.
NOTE: This is not mind control. Animals choose whether or not to help JJ.
>>
>>34170153
>And if we need an information network we could just call Chat.

She's not available 24/7.

She's also not around New York City a lot, but animals are.
>>
>>34170153
Of course you'd need to convince to do that for you. Everytime.
>>
>>34170097
we would have to make friends with the animals to get them to do shit for us, and since friends don't eat other friends it would force us to at least try and go vegan.

and being vegan is for faggots.
>>
>>34170199

You would also need to convince animals to do shit for you every time.
>>
>>34170153
It does make them trust you.
Which, as you said, since animals are pretty fucking stupid, means you can tell them that a guy hunts on their young and they'll be inclined to believe you.

>>
>>34170153
>>34170222
It makes animals trust you, akin to something like charm person I'm sure. Shit, just so long as we ask them to do something they'd likely do already it shouldn't be a problem

For instance, having a bird shit on a person. Oh no, that's so wildly out of character for a bird!
>>
It's been getting popular recently, and I haven't got a decent answer yet.
Why do people like healing vitae?
Seriously.
It grants level 2 healing. For a matter of hours. To people who ingest enough of our blood.

Any situation where people are hurt enough to consider drinking lizardelf hoboblood? They're too hurt for it to be enough.

It has some decent extrapolatives, yes, but they're really expensive, and there are better things to be getting.
>>
>>34170189
>>34170196
You do realize that we would need to talk to every rat squirrel or bird in that "survalence network" and convince each of them individually to help us.

And since it wont let us contact those animals over a long distance we would need to physically go find them to get whatever information that they gathered.

Not to mention we have beeter senses than any animal in New York. Animal Affinity is a shit power.
>>
>>34170237
>eating turkey at thanksgiving

People have become increasingly paranoid that other members of our motley mutant menagerie are going to be lethally wounded and die unless we have some kind of healing ability.

I actually wouldn't mind getting it eventually, but I have no interest in its extrapolatives and I'm still looking to get sequencing/muscle memory first.

Not to mention that we have better senses than any animal in New York. We don't need to ask them what they can see. We can see it ourself.
>>

>>34170314
They already trust us, so I doubt we'd need to do much convincing to let us know what they saw.

As for our senses, sure, yeah but an animal is less obvious spy and depending on the animal could have valuable insight on people we're investigating. How easy would it be to ask the cat of the victim to tell us what happened? Or to ask a dog to tell him where his master keeps his drugs?

Our senses are good, but we're not omnipotent. There's going to be a point where something is a witness to something

Also, your forgetting people are animals. I bet you guys Animal Affinity will allow us extrapolatives to manipulate humans

It's accelerated healing, but nothing beyond human means. It's the same as if you don't have enhanced healing. Only faster.

Same thing.
I mean there's Icarus with the Guthries, but we're not in very good terms with them, considering how his sister is essentially decided that JJ is out to get them.

Not to mention their family is not necessarily the most reliable bunch.

I agree. I hope she makes a appearance.

How did she show up in the photo if she is a vampire?

And we're going in circles again.
Okay. Say someone has a wound. That can be healed by way of our blood.
You know how else that can be healed. Use bandages, and wait a little longer. Fucking magic.

Now say someone is hurt enough that drinking our blood actually seems like a viable route. They drink our blood. How much difference do you imagine will be made? In this dire scenario?

I- it- screw it. I'm getting too frustrated, I'm making the same arguments, and getting the same responses that keep ignoring the same points.
I shall retire from the debate while I have sense left.

Healing factor>>>medicine

stop trying to get our muggas killed

BECAUSE YOUR ARGUMENT IS RETARDED!

"Oh gee, look at this bullet wound, put some pressure on it and you'll be good in one to two weeks, if we can get you stitches and you don't bleed out.

Sure would be useful if we had some power that could help rapidly grow soft tissue (that it would naturally at a snail's pace) to close the bullet hole in an hour instead. OH WELL

don't forget infection and removing the slug
>>
>>34171920
Right, the risk of infection that would occur if we tried to let it heal naturally. Not that there's any risk for that, being hobos right?
>>
>>34171811
I agree with you. I'm supporting it now while it's got people pushing for it, because I don't know if the support will wane or not. If a push for increasing photosynthetic biology was happening now I'd be supporting that, but it's not.

>What healing vitae does not do
Regrow limbs
Regrow organs

>What healing vitae does do
Repair damaged organs and limbs
Boost immune system
Accelerate the natural healing

>What does this mean?
It means that healing vitae will save a person from bleeding to death almost every time, but it won't save them from organ failure if the organ is dead.

but it would give us more time to get them to medical treatment

More then likely
