Who are the Conservators? They're a brand new /tg/ custom chapter of space marines. Tasked with defending a series of medieval tech agriworlds, the Conservators are perhaps the poorest, most badly equipped marines in the Imperium who haven't been declared traitors. It happens when you suffer more than 75% casualties early on and manage to so completely piss off the Mechanicum that they refuse to even give you ammo shipments.

http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Conservators

For those who were in the previous thread I'll be continuing to write fluff and some storytime as well, as well as continue to flesh the chapter out and answer questions for anybody who's interested.
>>
Scout Marcus Killian breathed deeply of the forest air as he traveled along, the clip clopping of his steed's hooves on the dirt road the only sound besides birdsong and the wind in the trees as he made his way along the path. To his right of him stretched a great green field, cattle grazing here and there. To his left lay a great green wood, a thick and untamed forest of tall oaks, teeming with life. He turned his gaze to the road ahead, thinking on the long path which had lead him here.

It had been twenty years ago that he had been first inducted into the ranks of the scouts of the Conservators. This followed four years of training and education at the hands of more senior battle brothers, and their approved aides. He learned the art of sword and bow, of stealth and infiltration, of dramatic assaults and mounted combat. He learned mathematics, philosophy, metalworking, weapons maintenance, medicine, a host of skills which would aid him in his long life to come.

He had yet to leave his homeworld of Gallorn, or Gallorn III as it was officially known. He chuckled, in his great grandfather's time nobody would ever have thought that, because the idea of leaving one's world simply would never occur to anyone. So much had changed over the past two hundred years.
>>
>>34152452
It had been almost two centuries ago that the Conservators first came to the world of the Asharn March, a young chapter looking forwards to a glorious history of service in the Imperium's name. Unfortunately a series of disasters robbed them of that destiny before they had even set the foundations for their fortress monastery. The Ork Waaagh, the embargo of the Mechanicus, the total cutoff of all supplies and support beyond direct military intervention from other chapters or the Imperial Guard, all of it had left the young chapter destitute.

But as much had been lost, much had since been rebuilt. New members had been inducted, remaining weapons had been cared for with utmost care, even replicated where possible by tech priests and skilled artisans working with hand tools by firelight. Now, almost two hundred years later, the Conservators were a true fighting force to be reckoned with.

Marcus had spent two decades in the service of the chapter, as a scout marine. He had received all of the implants successfully, making him in body a full Astartes, a superhuman beyond the ken of ordinary men. Clad in masterfully crafted steel plate, sword at his side and bow in hand he had spent years fighting the feral greenskins who still sometimes arose to plague his world's beautiful green fields and peaceful folk.

It had been an eventful twenty years. He had built a home with his own hands, inherited his father's tavern, taken a wife who was currently with child. And now he was about to take the greatest step of his life, to becoming a full battle brother. He turned his horse down a cobbled path deeper into the woods, towards the sound of rushing water.
>>
>>34152546
Before the mounted marine sat a solid wooden building with a stone chimney gently issuing smoke. It sat beside a coursing river which turned a large waterwheel connected to he structure, which looked to be both home and workshop. Marcus dismounted, walking his horse to the stable and penning her there, patting the animal before he walked back to the building. It seemed he had been noticed, as a stout man in an apron was waiting for him, his arms crossed over his chest. "So, you are the latest scout they have sent to me, Killian was it?" He asked.

The marine nodded. "Yes sir, Marcus Killian." He said politely, standing before the man. Despite how the marine towered over the human, the smaller mortal was in no way intimidated. The Conservators had long since become part of the general population of the worlds they oversaw. While there were still few of them, seeing one about the village in their daily life was nothing too extraordinary. Almost two centuries of constant casual contact had worn out any awe left at the sight of the superhumans. Marcus could tell when someone in his tavern was new by the moment of surprise in their eyes when they saw an Astartes serving mead at the bar, everyone in town had known him for years.

"Very well, scout Killian, come with me and let us begin." The man said, leading the Astartes into the building behind his solid little home. Inside it was clearly a smith's forge, large stone furnace set up in the back wall, the waterwheel cranking a small generator, neat wires hanging from wooden rafters as they powered some of the more exotic devices in the smithy. "Tell me, marine, what blade do you envision yourself wielding?" He asked, leaning slightly against a large table.
>>
>>34152354
As much as I hate to shit on your writefaggotry - because by all means, continue, it's nice to have creative discourse that isn't a quest thread - Space Marines are in and of themselves incredibly expensive and valuable tools. Their role is such that even the most egregiously under supplied can expect basic support, otherwise their founding would be considered a wash, and the Minotaurs will shortly show up to claim their "gently used" power armor after spraywashing the corpse bits out of it.

After they murder them, I mean.
>>
>>34152658

Yeah, that's the main problem. I'm liking this, but I'll point out that Space Marines are so ridiculously valuable, they're worth MORE than the power armor and bolters and all the equipment they usually get.

A Chapter that's entirely underequipped and otherwise unable to carry out it's duties is a chapter that isn't going to be around for much longer.

Like, power armour and bolters cost the equivalent of millions. Gene-seed and the process which creates Marines are literally beyond price.
>>
>>34152625
The Astartes nodded, having thought long and hard on this subject, testing various blades out in the chapter armory in the nearby city. "A hand and a half sword, small enough to wield one handed but with a large grip for two handed fighting, sharpened on both edges and with a straight blade until the point." He said, picturing it clearly.

"Draw it." The smith said, putting out a piece of charcoal and pointing to a hide on the table. The marine nodded, taking the stylus and marking out the image he saw in his head, a simple, sturdy two sided blade, sized for his armored hands. The smith nodded. "Elegant but powerful, versatile and strong. I approve." He said, thinking over the image for a few moments. "Then let us not waste time, I have the forge prepared already." He said, going over to a set of shelves. He got out a strange looking device, some form of exoskeleton which he fit over his right arm, powered by cables dangling from the rafters.

He pointed to the forge. "You work the bellows." He instructed, getting a steel bar and working some arcane looking controls on the side of the forge. The marine worked the bellows as the forge as they heated the metal. When it was red hot the smith removed it, setting it upon the great anvil and swinging his servo assisted arm, the deafening crash of hammer on glowing steel echoing around the forge.
>>
>>34152354
So basically melee weapon focused marines, right? Do they use non-power armor too?
>>
>>34152658
>>34152690
The reason they don't get proper support is because they pissed off the Mechanicus by allowing the only real forge world in the immediate area to be destroyed. Not failed to protect it, but rather chose not to protect it in order to save some dirt farming peasants instead.

So while they get the support of other chapters and the Imperial Guard when they need backup, the mechanicus refuses to offer them any aid and the massive labyrinth of paperwork that is the administratum seems to have largely forgotten they exist, or at the very least sees that they are regaining strength and defending their space and if they're doing that how much help do they really need? They have other chapters who are actually seeing major action who need the supplies a lot more than a chapter that barely ever leaves their own space and has few actual major conflicts to their name.
>>
>>34152706
The scouts wear high-quality steel plate armor instead of carapace and use bows instead of bolters.

Granted, the bows are recurve bows, six feet long at least, and made of steel rather than wood, and fire explosive tipped arrows.

All marines have swords, regardless of specialty. As for power armor, it's explained in the 1d4chan page. Their primary armor is ancient suits of Mk V armor, as well as a few hundred suits of Mk VI
>>
>>34152691
Time faded away as the two worked the forge, hours and days ceased to matter when time was measured by the pounding of hammer on steel, the fiery breath of the bellows and brief moments caught in breaks when food and drink was shared between smith and marine. The steel was heated, beaten, folded upon itself and hammered flat again. Twisted and turned, folded and bent, slowly the sword took shape over days and nights of constant working.

Steam rose from the quenching bucket as the blade was plunged into it, tempered as it cooled. The smith smiled as he drew out the cold blade, laying it down as he took a cloth to polish it. "Almost done." He said with satisfaction. Marcus was impressed, his enhanced body had carried the exertions easily enough, but the smith was an unaugmented human, yet somehow he had been able to shoulder the burden of such an intensive labor with little rest.

The sword blade was polished until it shone, and sharpened until each side carried a deadly edge. It was fitted with a solid cross guard and a slightly pointed pommel that could shatter a skull easily enough. The hilt was wrapped in rich brown leather, thick enough to withstand the wear of power armored fingers for some time before needing to be replaced.

At long last the smith and marine looked at the sword laying on the table. "It is finished, and a fine blade it is." The master craftsman said with pride. Marcus nodded.

"I will be honored to carry it forth, you have my thanks master smith, I only wish that I could have your skills." He said truthfully, never having been one for forging.

The man nodded. "Aye, we each have our talents that's for sure." He said, sheathing the blade and handing the sword to Marcus, resting in its sturdy leather scabbard. He longed to draw the sword, but knew he could not, hanging it on his swordbelt.

"My thanks again, I should be returning home now, it has been a privilege." He said with a bow of his head.
>>
>>34152816
Is there going to be sex in this soon?
>>
>>34152712
The Mechanicus as an enemy can certainly ruin their advanced weaponry and armor capabilities, but completely clogging a Chapters supply line is a bridge too far even for them. The other Highlords would see this as a power play and rain shit fury over them for it.

To say nothing of the fact that the Mechanicus doesn't handle the bulk of Imperial logistics, the Administratum does
>>
>>34152816
"Fare thee well marine." The smith said with a bow of his own head. "That is a fine blade you have helped to forge. I am honored to know you will carry it forward, beyond this world to your battles amongst the stars."

Marcus smiled, the prospect was as exciting to him as it was to the man before him. Giving his thanks once more, Marcus mounted his horse and rode back down the path towards his home.

Three days later, the hour of ascension was nearly upon him. He stood before a full length mirror, looking himself over. He wore his steel plate armor, his scout gear, polished until it shone like a mirror. He looked himself over, checking every bit of his armor and adjusting it slightly, trying to make sure that everything was perfect.

"Oh stop your fidgeting, you look perfect." A voice beside him said.

He looked over, seeing his wife standing there, a brown haired beauty who had stolen his heart one day. He had returned home, fresh from a scouting expedition in which he had slain a number of greenskins in the high fells, back to tending his tavern when in she had walked, into his bar and into his life.

"You know me, I have to make sure everything is perfect, today of all days." He said, adjusting his swordbelt, the blade he had helped to forge hanging from it in its scabbard.

She shook her head, reaching up to make some minor adjustments. "Hush now, this is just a ceremony, to think that someone who slays orks by the dozen would be nervous over a little public display like this." She tisked at him. He tried to find something to object at, but her adjustments seemed to have made his armor truly perfect. He nodded.

"I have been working towards this day for the pasty twenty four years, I think I'm entitled to a bit of nerves." He said, making her chuckle.
>>
>>34152890
Perhaps it should be tweaked so that the Conservators lost contact with the Admin so there's no official supply line because they're registered as lost or killed?
It's only local IG and the like that they manage to contact and prove their identity to that they get support from.
And they STILL managed to piss off the local AdMech faction.
>>
>>34152893
He looked at himself in the mirror, armored bulk dwarfing the woman next to him. "My love... do you have any regrets?" He asked, looking to her. "About us... I truly have been blessed to have you in my life but... I do worry that a Conservator may not make the best husband. My duties to the Imperium may well take me far from home for Emperor alone knows how long. I may leave for years at a time, or simply never return. I fear that my duty to my Imperium will prevent me from doing my duty to my wife." He said, holding her hand gently in his armored gauntlet.

She smiled. "My only regret, is that you did not give me this child sooner." she said, placing his massive hand on her swollen belly. "So that our son could see his father on his knighting day."

"Son?" He asked, nervously.

She nodded. "The medicae confirmed it." She said with a smile.

The corners of Marcus' mouth quirked up in a somewhat goofy grin. "That's... that's nice to know." He said, holding her close. A few moments later he heard the trumpet outside. "Time to go." He said, his wife nodding before she slipped away out of the room. A few minutes later a second horn sounded. Marcus nodded to his reflection one last time, before he stepped out of the door.
>>
>>34152931
That's entirely possible. The Administratum has lost entire star systems before due to filing errors. The Conservators were brand new when they got so badly mauled they barely survived, so it's possible the administratum just doesn't know they exist beyond the local office.
>>
>>34152973
Before him was a cobbled street, packed on each side with people. He was in the city of Arcarun, capitol of Gallorn and naturally the seat of power for the Conservators on the planet. The crowds were quiet, only excited murmurs heard on either side of him. He walked alone down the street, colorful banners flying from rooftops and off of walls, flower petals strewn on the street before him.

He walked up to the temple at the end of the street, a great majestic building of stone. On the front steps stood seven hulking figures, battle brothers in full power armor. Six stood upon the steps, three to a side, clad head to toe in Mk V armor, their impassive helmets betraying nothing. At the top of the steps stood an elder brother in his Mk VI armor, his helmet off to show his weathered features.

The crowd grew totally silent as he slowly ascended the steps of the temple, passing the unmoving battle brothers on each side. He reached the top and stood before the elder marine. The sergeant looked him over.

"Scout Marcus, you stand before us today a marine who has proven your worth. In the service of your world you have shown bravery, in the service of your Imperium you have shown duty, in the service of your Emperor you have shown loyalty. For all of these you have been noted, and for all of them you have been judged." He said, reaching out his hand. "Give me your sword." He said.

Marcus unclipped the blade from his belt and handed the sheathed sword to the veteran marine, who drew it from its scabbard, examining it.
>>
>>34153048
The sergeant examined the sword, setting the scabbard down and taking it in both hands, moving it around his body in a fluid form, feeling the weight, watching the steel shimmer in the summer sunlight. "This is a fine sword." He said, holding it up so the crowd could see. "It has been forged with skill and patience. The proper time and tools were used to forge it. So too is a marine forged, with time and care and skill." He said, as he began to pace, Marcus standing in place.

"Training, dedication, experience. Over decades is a marine forged into a weapon which can be taken into battle. And over the decades and centuries to come he is honed and sharpened and refined into a blade which can pierce any defense, fell any foe." He looked to the sword again. "This is a fine sword." He repeated. "It is simple, and it is plain. It is not weighed down with decoration or adornment. No unneeded pieces mar its perfect lines, nothing upon it keeps it from performing its task to the utmost."

"So too must a marine avoid the trappings of glory, the distractions of medals and honors. It is not for these things he fights, it is for the people of the Imperium, for his battle brothers, for the cause in which he has dedicated his life. He must not allow himself to become weighed down with desire for glory and renown, it is humility and service which make a marine great, not the trappings of fame."
>>
>>34153100
"This is a fine sword." He said again, holding the tip in his gauntleted hand. He flexed it, making the steel bend. "It knows how to bend, to change, to let the forces of the world move about it without compromising what it is. Where a more brittle blade would snap, it can change, and return to what it must be to perform its duty." He said, releasing the blade so it snapped back to its original shape. "So too must a marine know how to bed, how to adapt to the changing world around him. Where others are set in their ways, he must know how to change. It is not blind obedience to ancient custom which shows his worth, but the ability to perform his duty under any circumstance. While the ocean may part around a great stone, that stone is worn down over centuries. It is the leaf on the wind, which can flow and move with the world around it, that soars unimpeded." He said, walking back to where Marcus stood.

"This... is a fine sword." He said for the final time. "It is worthy of a fine marine to carry it forward. Tell me, Marcus Killian of Gallorn, are you worthy of this sword?" He asked with an expectant gaze.

Marcus thought. "Brother sergeant." He said after some thought. "I do not know."

The marine thought for a long moment, nodding his head. "An honest answer." He said, looking to the sword again. "Strive to be worthy with all your heart and soul, and you will be. Now, kneel." He said, raising the sword to the sky. Marcus went down on one knee, bowing his head. "By that authority which hath been entrusted in me, by the chapter master, by the Imperium, by the Emperor himself by the action of his servants, do I induct thee, Marcus Killian, into the orders of the Conservators." He said, placing the sword tip on Marcus' shoulder. "Arise, battle brother."
>>
>>34153163
He allowed himself a small swell of pride as he rose to his feet, the crowd bursting into noise and energy as he rose. Several more figures emerged from the temple, artisans in their work clothes overseen by a wizened tech priest in his rust red robes. A small curtain was set up around the new battle brother as his plate armor was stripped off and neatly stacked to the side. The artisans helped him into his undersuit for power armor, and then began affixing the armor around him. Piece by piece the suit was built about his body, until at last the helmet lowered onto his head, the marine blinking as he looked at the HUD for the first time.

The ancient suit of armor felt like it had been made for him, the Mk V suit, made during the Horus Heresy itself, lost for centuries and rediscovered in the chapter's hour of greatest need, and now his to wield. He stood tall and proud on the steps of the temple as the brother sergeant held out his sword, hilt first.

Marcus reached out, and grasped the blade, holding it unsheathed for the first time. The sword gleamed before him as he took it in both hands, turning to the assembled crowd. He held the bastard sword before him, the crowd cheering as the temple bells rang. Behind his impassive helm, Marcus allowed himself a private smile. At long last he was truly one of the Astartes. Soon he would leave his world behind for the first time in his life, he would feel the heat of distant stars upon his skin, walk the surface of alien worlds.
>>
>>34153230

He searched the crowd, after a moment his eyes falling on his wife's face, one hand on her pregnant belly. He gave her a little nod to let her know he saw her. No matter how far from home his duty took him, no matter what wonders or horrors he saw, he knew that one small corner of the universe would always hold a meaning for him that none other could.

But such thoughts could wait. Today he was a newly inducted battle brother. Today he had his whole life ahead of him, and the stars awaited his arrival. Today, life was good.

Okay, done writing for now. Cranking that out was more tiring than I had thought.

Anybody like it? I'm planning on continuing with various other short scenes and stories from his life and career.

This is /tg/. Story time is always welcome.
>>
>>34152354
I read their fluff. Quite the socialized marines they are.
>>
M-marines have dicks?
>>
>>34153381
Still going through it, but they're pretty reasonable marines aren't they?

Do they have a battlecry? "All debts shall be paid" is their motto, but you can't shout that in the face of a warboss to spite him.
>>
>>34153421
Duh. But they're 200% asexual.

>>34153438
Reasonably reasonable than another /tg/ product that was supposed to be a serious attempt at making Reasonable Marines.

Conservators are nice.
>>
>>34153438
Eh, I can imaging a marine shouting ALL DEBTS ARE PAID and smashing a warbosses head in with a power fist personally.
>>
>>34153456
I giggled.
>>
>>34153456
If by debts one means all the Emperor's enemies's crimes against humanity, then I'd say they are debt collectors. And collecting say debts by smashing skulls with powerfists is fun.
>>
Turns out these guys have shit like actual wood in the grips of their weapons to save on the metal and plastic, unaugmented psyker auxilleries and a Titan stone relic that they meditate at that may or may not be blessing their swords. That's fucking neato.

Also, seems "For Home and Hearth!" is an unofficial battlecry for them alongside "All debts shall be paid"/" All debts are paid".
>>
How do you think the Conservators would get on with the other Chapters? Say another Chapter decides to stop by at Dekara to remind each other they exist, stop for a shit and a look in their gift shop before heading on to where ever the fuck they're going, how well do they get on?
>>
If Conservator bolters are hand made with care and due attention, are they actually better than the mass produced machine stamped variety due to how emotions, warp and machine spirits work in 40k? Their swords definitely do.
>>
>>34153910
Not to mention that they chill out with people in the local Taverns.

>>34154180
I think they and Salamanders would get along well. The same with Blood Angels (when they are not thirsty).

>>34154363
See Vostroya. They make everything with care and high quality. Even their mass produced stuff is way higher quality than that in other regiments.

Maybe I should make rules for them as I did for the Knights Repentant...
>>
Do they call their fortress monastery the Conservatory?

Diffrent Annon working on a codex thingamy...
They have so much different stuff, that just a chapter tactic wouldn't be enough.
Going to put it up on 1d4chan, so it will be open to anyone elses comentary.

Also... so thought for a bit on Dakar university, the school for psykers in the system.
Chief librarian serves as "Headmaster"
All librarians have the solemn duty of scanning their students regularly for weak will or taint. Burning out the ones who do. Still, the population is growing... humans breed like rabbits with sufficient food stuffs.

Also, the university has produced a special kind of force staff out of necessity. The focus rod is much cheaper to produce, but requires attuning to it to use. They really act like a set of psychic blinkers, but also boost the psykers effective power. They allow a psyker to cast one power without chance of perils... but they can't really use any other benifit of the powers. The attunement process is long, and detuning from a rod is just as time consuming. This allows psykers in large numbers to be fielded without fear of Suddenly Deamons.

Looking at the original thread, the Chapter Master has a shit ton of patchwork cybernetics and a walking stick half the time. Though he does ha e a powered armor suit to still kick butt.
Any more damage though and he'd be eligible for dreadnought status. And they don't have any walking coffins.
There is an Aegis suit that their "champion" wears, the winner of a tournament held every so often. Granted by the GK.

Certainly room for more, though even with their general lack of wargear. The Chapter Master certainly needs a weapon.
>>
>>34156973
So the Ancestral Zweihander would be a possibility?
>>
>>34153438
Battlecry: "For Hearth and Home!"

Motto is all debts shall be paid. It's more of a pre/mid battle oath than something you shout as you charge to rally the troops.

It's also a more non-combat vow, as the chapter takes the concept of honor debts very very seriously.

>>34153452
I admit, I like the Reasonable Marines, but I don't want to just make another one of them. So yes, they're not super overamped on being levelheaded and negotiating, they're just nice people who behave largely like normal humans.

>>34154363
That could certainly be a thing. Then again instead of being mass produced with precision tools they're being made with very primitive tools. Like a part that would normally be machine milled is often made by a solid piece of metal being whittled by a techpriest until it's the right shape.

>>34156833
All of this pleases me. Psykers will basically be pressed into fulfilling the role of heavy support and squad level support/special weapons. So while you may not have a meltagun in your squad you do have someone who can shoot lightening out of their fingers when annoyed.

>>34156856
Why thank you, I'll try to write some more if I have the time/my creative spark reignites.
>>
>>34156990
Certainly. The champion could use it, though the usual loadout for him is a one handed power sword and a storm shield.

>>34156973
Yeah, their current chapter master has to use a walking stick most of the time and is bedridden for long stretches after all the punishment he's soaked up. He is slowly healing on his own however, which is important to note, just at the moment he's really not up to much besides leading from afar and being a reassuring and inspiring figurehead for the people.
>>
>>34157057
Maybe the sweihander is the CM's, but he lends it out to his Questor? Someone to act on his behalf in matters he can't directly be there to make snap judgements upon?
>>
>>34156939
I mean... they are going to lose the vast, vast majority of their mechanization. And have psykers everywhere...

And crossbows, don't forget the shaped charge shooting crossbows.

Hell, they don't really have bikers. They have particularly brave scouts on horses, aided by again more psykers.

Note on psykers... there is probably going to be 1-2 per squad, and generally at least 1 attached to any viechical. Worry this may be to many psykers.
>>
>>34157090
I... really like that.

Questor would probably use CM crunch if anyone ever played this as he would use the master's wargear and be one of the finest warriors in the chapter. Not officially in command, but he's in charge during combat.

Emperor's Conservators.

>Those who reclaim, preserve, and build something better upon what was there before. The humble architects of a better tomorrow, who take the dregs that have been given to them, and through tireless effort and dedication have built something noble out of the shattered pieces they were left with.

They were forged with the shattered remains of a dozen Chapters, but they WERE forged. Now a single blade, they echo that first forging by taking the shards of the Imperium and remaking them into swords and shields of the Imperium again.
They take worlds and slowly raise them as befitting the dream of the Emperor. They conserve. They grow. They build.
They can take the bare minimum and build with it. Build with honour and conviction to create something more than the materials they had to use.

Seems to me, black templar chapter tactics and IG allies for human psykers should be enough to represent these guys, at least when things are serious enough to bring out the bolters.
>>
>>34157735
Hell, you could probably just play Fantasy with the scouts and orks.

Wait that sounds awesome.
>>
>>34152706
Its not that they're intentionally melee based so much as they make every shot count. They get a trickle of ammunition coming in from the wider Imperium, they scavenge a bit from the dead world but most of it has to be hand crafted in workshops, slowly and using primitive tools.

>>34152890
The area of space they live in consisted of one very minor forge world, insofar as you can have a minor forgeworld, and the agriworlds who fed it. In every direction for hundreds of light-years its nothing but uninhabited space, orks and more space. Its a very small island of civilization in a great big sea of fuck all. There were plans to develop it massively and make it the up and coming area for sectors around. Sadly these plans all hinged on having a working forgeworld at its heart to power the transformation.

The mechanicus won't supply them now, the Administratum can't get their collective head around the idea that a chapter can be rebuilding and still need help because thry lost the correct forms for that and they are too far away to easily get supplies any other way. The only help they can get is from their own people and they don't have the industrial capabilities.

>>34154180
Most would look down on them. Most would just restrain themselves to snide comments (Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Dark Angels). More assholeish ones might go so far as direct insults (Iron Hands, Marines Malevolent, Genesis Chapter). Some would get along with them just fine (Salamanders, Crimson Fists, Space Wolves).
>>34156621

>>34154363
No. If they had access to better tools, materials and tech-adepts then that level of attention to quality would have them all with master-crafted, pimped out combi-weapons. Sadly they don't. They have hand powered tools, locally produced materials and half of it is done by the local blacksmith who's main job is making horseshoes.
>>
>>34157297
I dropped 'Emperor's' from the name. More humble with just Conservators, not even declaring themselves the Emperor's own chosen warriors or something, simply those who fight in the name of the Imperium and its people.

And yes, all of that is a perfect explanation of who they are and what they do.
>>
>>34157798
Yeah, in the far future I see them having a lot of really nice master crafted gear from having such a long tradition of carefully handcrafted weapons. But right now they're just replicating the existing common quality weapons, making up for poor tools with time and skill.

>Space Wolves.

They would get along great with the SWs. After battle feasting is a tradition for both chapters, even if the Conservators parties are somewhat more restrained. Less loud raucous partying but more something you'd find in a high fantasy story.

A great hall lit by the cheery glow of candles, torches and roaring fireplaces, filled with hearty laughs and the clinking of ale mugs, trays of roast boar, roasted beef and big kegs of ale and mead set up as people mingle and talk, stories are told and a good time is had by all.

A bit more reserved than a space viking pub crawl but I think they'd like it just fine.
>>
>>34156973
Chapter Master was almost poured around some 2nd hand cybernetics. His Black Carapace is fucked, as was the skin above it and much of what was beneath it. He can't use astartes power armour again unless they get him a new Carapace and repair enough of his body to graft it to. The old suit he had was dismantled as even their most optimistic adepts pronounced it to be dead. They waited until he was capable of walking a bit before they performed the rites of termination dismantled it for spares. He watched. He was glad he no longer had tear ducts.

>>34157098
That's too many psykers. There are a fair few thousand spread across all the worlds they own. That's way above the Imperial Average, way above. But most of these are going to be used for basic shit on the home worlds. Acting as communication between communities because they don't have radios, predicting the weather, early warning systems, ork detection. Most of these aren't going to be of the right temperament to see/feel a battlefield. Those that are are going to be the heavy weapons guys because they lost almost all their heavy weapons over the centuries. Most of these are going to be in the PDF because they are most desperately needed there. They might have a dozen or so per company at the very most. That's still way more psykers than any other chapter bar the Grey Knights.

>>34157112
>>34157090
FUCKING AWESOME!
>>
>>34158028
Well, remember that there's plenty of low level psykers, depending on what population source it is. I don't think he's saying the chapter has dozens of Alphas and Betas, but it sounds more like there's a generally high level of Epsilons or whatever a weak psyker is, in their recruitment pool.
>>
>>34157867
I figured that on old contracts and treaties they're the Emperor's Conservators. But in general they're the Conservators.

>>34157798
Suggest we treat ammunition like it's treated in the Metro series. The home made stuff isn't very good but made in bulk. Scavenged Imperial rounds are far superior and thus a de facto currency. Marines will cheerfully do some heavy lifting for a handful of bolter shells, even if they don't typically have access to actual bolters. They can then trade them to marines that do or going on a Scav Run, as the better ammunition you have, the more likely you'll live and accomplish your goals all the better. But at the same time it's shooting money.

Also we can assume that despite the far happier machine spirits and warp presences, it's balanced out by the shit tier components and lack of precision tools to equal about a standard weapon?
Although maybe keep their melee about the average and into power/chain territory, hinted at emprah-style blessings.
>>
>>34156973
>Aegis

Drop the Aegis, that sounds a bit too special snowflake and that kind of relic would take away from their impoverished status.
>>
>>34158153
It was in the original thread. And it was a shit one that had been patched up, but it was still a goddamn Aegis suit gift and their champion could wear it with pride.

But maybe that is a little over the top? What should their champion wear and the GK have gotten them?
>>
>>34158028
I'd imagine their Chapter Master being a crippled old man that would barely walk. However when he goes to battle and the Chapter Champion meets a enemy that is actually overpowering, then the old guy stands up, asks the Champion for the Ancestral Zweihander and...HOLY SHIT!!! DID HE JUST ONE HIT KILLED THAT HIVE TYRANT CLEAVING IT HORIZONTALLY!!!?

And then he gives it back, sits back on his wheel chair and goes minding his business.
>>
>>34158189
The thing is the Aegis being gifted seems strange. A relic suit from another Chapter, maybe, but the Aegis suits are "mindwipe to keep hidden" levels of state secret used by a chapter that likes to try and make it so they officially don't exist except in the minds of a few. Plus, ancient, arcane tech.

Maybe make it a suit of relic power armor from another Chapter? Ultrasmurfs? Imperial Fists? By any other chapter's standards, it'd be a master-crafted suit of Mk IV or VI power armor, but it's a one of a kind relic for them.
>>
>>34158228
He does have a suit to fuck shit up, its almost a dreadnaught, slow as molasses and can't compare to most power suits but FUCK HE JUST HEADBUTTED A WARBOSS.
>>
>>34158284
Old guys are the most lethal beings in the universe.
>>
>>34158264
Master crafted Mk IV would be acceptable, but the Titan Stone seems to be a much beloved part of their fluff and I personally am very fond of it.

So there would have to be another explanation for how they got it. Perhaps instead of returning a dead Knight all the way to Titan they undertake a still very harrowing voyage to get him back to an Inquisitorial safehouse? And then upon learning of what brought their fallen brother home the Knights send the Stone via Inquisitorial courier?
>>
Their old Fortress was leveled. The orks overran it and started looting all of the things, desecrating the corpses, mounting heads on spikes and helmets as trophies.

One of the tech-adepts gave them the middle finger in the shape of the mushroom cloud (that by some trick of the wind looked like a middle finger from the right vantage point) and detonated the fusion reactor.

After the war was won the Astartes had to spend ~20 years living in spare rooms of the local lords and ladies of the lands.

Now they have a sort of Fortress. Its an extension to the castle of Kworum, capital city of the prosperous kingdom of South Thurnston on the planet Dekara.

Its nowhere near big enough to house the entire chapter. Its more sort of the place the mail gets sent. The Chapter Master and his advisers are, with the exception of the serfs, the only members of the chapter that can be considered permanent residents. It also houses the Chapters astropath. They have one and only one because the Mechanicus put pressure on the adeptus astra telepathica to only send them the bare minimum they had to.

As most of the chapter is spread out over the vastness of their domain and further they are safe from being wrecked in one fell swoop ever again.

Dun Kworum is only constructed out of natural stone and mortar, to the highest of skill, but still not comparable to ferrocrete and adamantium. One day, when the people have been taught how, they will have the home they need. But not now.

Medical equipment of the apothecarium is housed on the remaining ships of the fleet for the simple reason that they need reliable electricity.
>>
>>34158264
Hmm... perhaps a squad running with hose Makantire joined a group of Salamanders in holding out against a host of Eldar pirates.

The ship they were in was just leaving a system when a dozen eldar vessals dropped in on a few other merchanters also about to leave the system. The pirates took out the ships warp drives... the lot was to far out for the salamanders ship to get there in time.

The ccaptain of the rogue traider vessel was already heading for the conflict before the salamanders hail even reached them.

With a daring boarding action(the ship lacked drop pods, so they rode missile striped of warheads) and some lucky salvos, the Mackantire ship managed to force the eldar raiders off their prey.

All but one of the marines died in the fighting, but only none of the Eldar managed to break system before the Salamander battle barge reached firing range.

The merchants suffered minimal casualties, and the Conservators geneseed was recovered. In recognition of their valor, and drive to save the innocent, the Salamanders gifted the remaining Conservator with a fine set of mark V power armor.

Something like that. The Titan run only got them the Titan Stone and a general pass by the inquisition.
>>
>>34158356
The Techmarines may have gotten a little to into upgrading the chapter master. Did we really need to add the second micro reactor just to power the arms? I mean, how many tanks does he really need to be able to bench press.
>>
>>34152354

I fucking love this new chapter, they just need a symbol, and a little redesign of the colors to make them stand out a bit more,

perhaps they meet up with another chapter and the other chapter give them their remaining ammo/bolters as they are on their way to to their base anyway, what about dreds? one from before the shit with the admech went down?
>>
>>34158516
Mark V and fine don't work in the same sentence, but Salamander gifted power armor sounds perfect and the snippet's pretty fluffy.

Boarding torpedoes are a thing though, so the missile thing's a bit odd.
>>
>>34158568
The CM needs back mounted Grenade Launchers.
>>
>>34158516
Hmm, perhaps not wiped out to a man but some great act of valor would be a good choice. Riding missiles is... well awesome but also improbable even by 40k standards, the chance of being shot down or just plain missing seems a bit insane. Perhaps a groundside combat action under similar circumstances? With the Conservators bravery saving a bunch of civilians before the Salamanders could have gotten there in time?

The Conservators were just a single squad aboard the merchant ships, but by being there in the right place at the right time were able to save countless defenseless innocents at great personal risk, and suffered some losses as well.
>>
>>34158580
They're unadorned as a point of pride though. They believe that there should be little to obstruct the meaning behind an item or otherwise. And they're brown to evoke old monks as I recall. Maybe they need hoods for their tabard things to complete the look.

That said, a symbol to put on banners and flags is good.
>>
>>34158595
And yeah, maybe a suit of Mk IV armor would be better, an ancient relic given to a chapter who laid down their lives in defense of the innocent when they weren't even supposed to be fighting on that planet, simply because they couldn't stand by and watch as Imperial citizens were killed if there was anything they could do about it, even if it was just a forlorn hope defense.

As the Anon who wrote the Aegis shit in the previous fluff I have to say it now sounds a little far fetched.

The addition another Anon made about the Apothecary making pilgrimage to Titan, stitching the progenoid into his own flesh to preserve it, taking copious amounts of anti-rejection drugs despite it almost killing him, traveling the breadth of the galaxy, hitching rides on transports, ferries, courier ships and bulk haulage barges in a trek that must have taken decades all the way to Sol.

Sol, light that birthed humanity and shone upon the Emperor as he walked as a mortal. Holy space. And in its far orbits a place of darkness where Grey Knights dwell.

Much of the meeting was scrubbed from the Apothecary's mind. He was left in an escape pod just inside the Neptune Exclusion Zone and was picked up by a courier ship just outside the Neptune Exclusion Zone. In his pod was a masterfully constructed suit of Mk VIII power armour upon a basalt alter hewn from the crust of Titan.
>>
>>34158756
Now that is literally, in every sense of the word, epic.
Seriously, the "Epic of (name) the Seedbearer" sounds like something that the Conservators would legitimately write.
They probably have bardic serfs that help them the Rememberence anyway that could recite it.
>>
>>34158756
>>34158837
I like this, this is now cannon as far as I am concerned.

Personally I'd prefer a suit of Mk IV Maximus armor but just because I think it looks really cool and would be visually distinctive, rather than just being like every other chapter's armor with a big collar guard.

But I like this, one apothecary and perhaps a handful of battle brothers, if that, making a long and perilous journey to Titan to return the fallen brother home, the voyage there and back a tale of heroism and glory in its own right, let alone the actual cause it was undertaken in.

I like very much, really feels like a knightly epic.
>>
>>34158837
Garanius. Garanius the Seedbearer.
>>
Thinking on their emblem now.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is a sword, aligned vertically with the tip pointing up. Along the blade are a number of obvious cracks, running up and over and across in multiple places. This shows that while the sword has been shattered into many pieces, it has since been reforged and is as strong, or stronger, than it ever was.

Not sure about the rest of the emblem however.
>>
>>34158682

I was just thinking a black, white or red shoulder pad to give it a little oomph, on the table they might look a little boring, even though that is the point
>>
>>34159041
Made it like those Bretonnia ones from 40K. If they are like Knights, then make it heraldic.
>>
>>34159041
Don't forget guys, that unless they changed their logo to represent their new situation, which marines really don't do, they didn't START as a busted ass chapter with no tech. Don't have their logo imply that they've always been that way.
>>
>>34159103
Probably started with a full sword, but they altered it slightly to fit their new situation. Such a major event so soon after their founding would probably be reflected in their iconography.

>>34159084
Sounds good to me.

>>34159077

So something like this to start? To show that even if something is broken, pieces can be salvaged and a weapon forged anew?

I can keep making this sort of rough mockup, but I feel like the sword should be set onto some sort of backing.

Once we get something chiseled out I or someone who is probably much better at this sort of thing can make a better version.
>>
>>34159704
That... is awesome. I'm thinking less 'still broken' and more 'cracks in the blade' to show that it was broken but is now reforged into a new, stronger whole.

Not that I want to sound ungrateful, that's way better than anything I could make, just saying that the emblem of a proud space marine chapter shouldn't be a broken weapon in my eyes, it's one with the scars of being broken in the past. So I'd say join the sword together along those cracked lines but leave the lines and some weathering along them to show where it was broken but put back together.
>>
>>34159752
That's helpful. I'm also thinking there should probably be something in the heraldry to reflect what happened on Chiron IV, seeing as its the focal point of why the chapter is the way it is right now.
>>
>>34159704
Probably on a green field or something.

Also, perhaps have the sword coming out of the titan stone? That is a big enough relic it might get featured in the heraldry...
>>
>>34159795
Piercing a servo-skull perhaps?
>>
>>34159808
For some companies yes. Perhaps the company which Garanius the Seedbearer belonged to, but not the chapter as a whole I would think, seeing as the event with the stone was over a hundred years after the founding of the chapter.

>>34159795
Yeah, that would be good. Maybe a cracked or broken gear in one corner of the banner? The sword itself would probably make a good symbol, a banner of battle standard would likely have a lot more iconography on it.

I mean even the Grey Knights just have a book and sword, and the Ultramarines have a simple omega symbol, so the reforged sword would probably do just fine as the chapter emblem.

>>
>>34160044
A massive stone penis. They Grey Knights don't get out much and they found it funny.

In all honesty, not sure. But I want to get a "sword in the stone" reference in. Maybe standard altar, with a slot for a sword. So when new marines pray/meditate/think at it they leave the sword inside while they do so. It's said if Terra disapproves of the new marine in some way, the stone will refuse to relinquish the sword back. Doesn't happen, but y'know, superstition.

>>34160158
It's ah... Fallout. The Brotherhood of Steel from Fallout.

I can definitely see the March turning into Ultramar II: Salamanders Boogaloo if the Conservators can hold their shit together and keep upping the tech levels.

One thing I can also see happening is the March developing a technological base without AdMech support. They won't be able to replicate more advanced Imperial technologies without going full Heretek, because it's really fucking hard to build giant plasma reactors without eye augments, brain implants, and a small machine shop built into a spare arm, but they might wind up like a dozen versions of Daysimir from the late Planetary Governor Quest: civilian engineers that can deal with basic technology so you don't have to have Mechanicus personnel fixing everything from engines to toasters. Tolerated by the Mechanicus because, realistsically, almost every world that has some tech before it joins the Imperium or is cut off by warp Storms or invasion for a long time is going to have these people, and they cannot threaten the AdMech monopoly on building fucking Titans and Cruisers without practically waving signs saying "Shoot me, I'm a Filthy Tech Heretic".

Also, dem beakies man. Dem fucking beakies.

Nah man, speaking as someone who works with metallurgy, a "reforged" blade that's worth even half a damn is an actual, new blade.

Any blade with cracks in it has never been reforged, because that's only a partial, halfassed reforging, not remixing the molecular structure into a crystalline whole.

It should be either broken, or fully forged. Leaving it partially cracked implies only that is worn down, damaged, and likely to break in the future.

Yeah, it'd be far easier to hunt down some sort of wild xenos beast that's large enough to A: Not die instantly in battle, and B: Be tough enough to carry an armored marine into battle to begin with.

And once they've gotten such an animal, you still probably need to give it barding.

Overall, such a beast would probably be about half the size of a Rhino, all on its lonesome. Easily doable in 40k, of course.
>>
>>34160331
It's symbolic. I think the Conservators know weaponsmithing pretty well by now, but it's hard to show a blade made of shards without depicting the shards making up the blade.

>>34160361
I can see one of the agriworlds having such an animal. They have horses as well I believe, that serfs and scouts ride when not expecting to be shot at or with nothing else available.
Horses can turn corn and grass into food, and create more horses who are faster than walking. Wargear vehicles can't be made yet at all.
>>
>>34160384
What does the inscription read?

I will say that this is the emblem of the third company, among who's ranks is the apothecary who carried the gene seed to Titan and brought back the stone as his reward.

A chapter emblem should be more simple, like the original image, something to put on a pauldron, this is something more worthy of being on a banner, it's more complicated and dramatic looking.

I love them both. And thus will use them both.
>>
I cannot WAIT for a company of Salamanders to show up. Seriously, these guys are going to wind up with "Adopted Successor Chapter" status in about three seconds if they aren't secretly Salamanders successors already. Bros that Smith together, stay together.
>>
>>34160399
I think the standard marines would probably have my broken version on their shoulderpads, but the one I made with the sword in the stone would be more along the lines of what's on the chapter banners and such.

Sort of an every day reminder to the foot soldiers that they come from a humble start, but when displaying their pride to everyone else on a banner it'd be more about what they've accomplished since.

For what its worth I don't see them carrying banner or painting things on their armour.

The armour is brown because its the colour of the natural preservative they paint their armour with.

Thy have wall tapestries. Lots of them. Making them is a meditative exercise that many of the older brothers find relieves stress. They also act as insulation for the stone walls. I can see all this imagery on tapestries and painted over doorways but not on banners. They don't give a shit if the enemy recognize them or not.

The worlds of the March don't have native xeno-derived life forms.

The worlds were terraformed during the Dark Age. This has lead to a bit of a problem with the accelerated technological advancement of the locals as they have no fossil fuels. Charcoal, wood and alcohol fuel their industries. Its also why the chapter is always promoting efficiency as they can't just dig it out of the ground and don't want to start suffering deforestation.
>>
>>34160720
So how about they drop initiates into one of the worlds that has those xenos and they have to best one or tame it, whilst painted red

So would this picture be good as an emblem? It's just something I threw together in a minute in MS Pain.

Painting one shoulderpad black and a simple white symbol on it seems like a fairly plain way to identify themselves.
>>
>>34160786
That seems fine to me.
>>
>>34160720
What if the main city mentioned in the (excellent) write-faggotry was made up of the ruins of the crashed O'Neill cylinder when the planet eventually finished terraformed
>>
>>34160767
Their worlds still have the monster-rhinos.

They seem to be some sort of gene-spliced thing. Its mostly rhino in there but it has been modified. Easier/possible to tame and train for one thing. Almost supernaturally resilient. So long as you don't threaten its offspring, if you do that it will get upset and reduce even an astartes to a damp depression in the ground.

There was some attempt to breed them as cattle. It was abandoned. They don't breed quickly enough, are difficult to kill without high-tech equipment due to armour plated hide, thick bones and sheer size. Also had the taste and texture of old boots marinated in piss.

In the end they just got used as pack animals and battle mounts.
>>
>>34160720

That's why the above anon said "Nearby uninhabited Deathworld". As in, a place fairly nearby they can make trips to to collect murderbeasts when they need new breeding stock.
>>
>>34160908
Also they kept licking people to death as cattle. They're not the brightest beasts, just happy to see the human that brings them hay.
There's a reason Astartes are the only ones that keep them.

The conservators can't gene-splice. They can preform necessary surgery for inducting aspirants but genemods are not something they can do.
>>
>>34160999
It is an old, DAoT Gene mod that has just sorta... been left alone? The "Rhino"s were an idea somebody thought was clever a really long time ago. The actual use of them was lost in one of several universal apocalypses. Now they just let fully armored astates ride them into battle.

Because Space marines on rhinos.
>>
>>34160999
I never said they could.

I said the Dark Age humans could. The big rhino creatures are descendants of their old work.
>>
Okay, new fluff added.

As for bestial mounts, I have no real problem with it, up to you people.
>>
>>34161115
Look man...We can put that in the background that the origin of these rhinos was DAoT, but the conservators found them on a death world if they ever found them at all, and things from death worlds are already supposed to kill fucking marines. Read stuff on catachan and you'd understand
>>
>>34161115
>>34161125

I still support the "Nearby Deathworld" version, because it doesn't change established fluff as much, and provides a new planet to flesh out and possible future sources of combat animals.

Pic of a future Conservator Apothecary and gifted tank.

Also, in Rogue Trader the Marines that dealt closely with Traders incorporated his symbol on their armor or with their own chapter symbol. Maybe the ones serving or have served with the Rogue Trader have his mark somewhere as a point of pride.

Oh. I didn't see the point where DAoT was referenced in the post>>34160908 I'm fine with it. Just ignore>>34161201!

Problem is, we don't know much of Mackyntire before his involvement with the Conservators, which he has since acted as a sort of patron.
He must trade an awful lot of food, to consistently buy March-souced shipments.. And at least now keeps an eye out for astartes-level weaponry.
What kind of symbol would a mid-level Trader of food and basic weaponry even have?
>>
I really like the part about the Scout Company using intensely huge and powerful recurve bows so I figured I'd keep messing around in paint.net and made a 10th company insignia.
>>
>>34161338
I also made a version that's more likely to appear as heraldry on a shoulderpad or section of a banner or something.
>>
>>34161319
Stalk of wheat crossed over a las-rifle.

Or whatever his family crest was before.
>>
>>34161319
An onion.

More seriously, macantire means "son of the carpenter" acording to wikipidia... so he started off in the wood buisness. They never got rich, but they made enough to get by... until Brenden broadened their focus and found them true wealth.

The food trading started as a sideline to excuse exploring and finding new markets. It developed into their main focus after aligning with the Conservators.

His symbol is a crossed saw and hammer, with some cool Latin phrase on scroll work underneath.
>>
If the Conservators is that badly equipped and supplied, what is Gallorn's Imperial guard regiment like
>>
>>34161319
They don't need to be fancy or super meaningful. Some old school Trader symbols where similar to the Ultramarines in terms of simplicity.
>>
Are you guys gonna incorporate House McIntyre's coat of arms into the chapter symbol? Given their close relationship that would be fitting.
>>
>>34161455
Maybe a sheaf of wheat on a tree background? Relates to both timber trading of the past and the food trading today.
>>
>>34161493
...naaah. They're marines first, friends to a Rogue Trader second. Those marines serving as honour guard may wear a mixed symbol though. And a small badge of his crest worn afterwards to show they served aboard a ship for a time.

Broken sword thrust through the wheat sheaf as I suggested in >>34161512 ?
>>
>>34161161
So the Scouts would have normal horses?

Then lets make the actual Brothers have not-Cold Ones, while Veterans ride one pseudo Dragons (their breathe attacks count as Heavy Flamers).
>>

>>34161357
I really like these. Seriously, I'm honored that you're all spending so much time and energy on this idea I've had kicking around in my head for a while.

I don't think I'll be adding anything more for a while, it's almost dinner time and then time to go to work, but I'll be back later.
>>
>>34161571
Not familiar with either of those creatures, but dragon riding vets certainly fits the knightly, high fantasy feel we're developing.
>>
>>34161571
I think this is going over the top now. We don't want this turning into wolf wolfity wolfing wolf yiff wolves.

Scouts have monster-rhinos. Everyone else has feet.

A battle-brother in full power armour is about a tonne.

They do have salvaged chimeras that run on alcohol.

Maybe their much repaired land to space craft are nicknamed dragons.
>>
Wasn't too sure about these guys at the start, seemed a bit too "anti-sue" for me. Not saying its bad, but it seems you're really going out of your way to make these guys shit-tier, which isn't as cool as it sounds (to me, personally.)

Read the 1d4chan wiki page, seems you've put a lot of effort into it. Not too sure about the looting armour and weapons for Space Marine Chapters, especially considering that'd probably be a reason to go to war with them.

All in all, not bad, just personally not my cup of tea.
>>
>>34161626
Cold Ones are those Velociraptors from Warhammer Fantasy.

>>34161643
There are creatures that can toss Terminators like rag dolls. Very large creatures...or Dougie McIsaac.
>>
>>34161696
I'm not exactly ecstatic about these guys either. And I fucking love dragonriders.
Like the idea more they use beasts of burden for war, like even here they're just scrounging around for weaponry. The rhinos were originally made ages ago to endure above all even on deathworlds, and provide strength for humans to use while settling in. Big dumb brutes who can haul a downed battle brother all day and night by dangling a carrot in front of and a serf saying its "Good rhino! Yes you are! Yes oh yes you are!".

So they're not really supposed to be jumped on and rode into battle, but they work alright for it and so Emperor damn it they're going to use what they have!
>>
>>34161643
I like the exploration of mounts, but I agree with this anon. Let's not go overboard in giving them all kinds of warbeasts because if you replace tanks with giant fire breathing wingless dragons then they're not really that under strength are they? And the fact that they don't have all the best things seems to be what is being a big draw for a lot of people here, so let's try to avoid the urge to give them every awesome thing we can think of.
>>
>>34161809

I would love to see some more. I'll try to write more after I get back from work.

Though I may mention if I see something I consider a glaring inconsistency in fluff, but I try not to be a jerk about such things so if you feel like writing I'd be flattered if you did so.
>>
>>34161809
Then lets make the pseudo Dragons a extreme rarity where only the most strong willed of veterans can ride them. In order to even get something like that, a Veteran has to forcefully mount it and break its will (which can even take days). If the marine survives the experience (and not always does one survive), then he and the mount become best friends (or at least the mount acknowledges him).

Just like Empire Demigryphs.

So, there's at least three unusual figures in this Chapter as I see itnthat have been hammered out so far.
The Chapter Master himself, filled to the gills with salvaged and borderline prototype tech to keep him mobile as he slowly recovers, largely stuck to an administerial and figurehead role. Likely campaigns for more support with local factions but runs against walls of red tape. Give him an our or two to get in his battle armor though and he's a small slow, slightly weaker dreadnaught with fists. Who will punch you.

Then we have his as yet unnamed Questor, who wields one of the VERY few relics the Chapter has to it's name. The position was created after the Master was hospitalised, he represents the CM off world and in the fray, using that Relic Zweihander. Chosen by the CM as being one to balance zeal and restraint, knowledge and power. Likely to accused the role of CM too. Unknown if the position will remain a thing once the Chapter regains a mobile Master.

And then there's the unnamed current Champion, chosen by a tournament of some kind within the Chapter, he wears an exceptional set of high quality armor, and faces the battlefields the Chapter fights on daily. The Chapter Master may decide overall strategy, the Questor implements it and deals with on-site problems but the Champion rides out and inspires all to do their duty once the course is set.

This Chapter is pretty fucking rad.

>>34161936
There was that one Anon who wanted them to paint themselves red and punch a beastie to death..

I guess maybe they also rarely ride whatever predates on the rhinos? Not 100% on this idea though. Feel it's missing something.

do the Conservators get on well with the Inquisition, and the rogue trader's?
>>
>>34162198
Their linage could look like this

Ultramarines > Eagle Warriors > Marines Errant > Conservators

They are some late founding 4th generation marines.

Also the Marines Errant have a long standing alliance with a 'Trader so its possible the Conservators used it as the precedant for startign their own.
>>
do they even have a Battle barge or did they pawn it off?
>>
>>34162198
In the 1d4chan page, they're mentioned to be made of several broken chapters.

You know what I just thought up while making a sandwich? Imagine the scene. Some Space Wolves have landed to say hi on their way to or fro from a battleground, maybe do some praying and stretch their legs.
So there's one in a field, talking to a Conservator about wolves this and the way of wolves and the wolf spirit, isn't that right battle brother? Hahaha!!
And the Conservator stands there, nodding and chewing a strand of grass while the Yiff's wolf sniffs him a bit, and then... There's this "SNORT" right behind the wolfskin clad marine. Who barely has time to turn around before a rhino "gently" pushes him aside and knocks him over before sniffing his keeper carefully in case he's manifested any treats, worrying this piss out of the now barking wolf before plodding off sadly, treatless.
So the Conservator takes the grass out of his mouth and says "Yeah. Wolves sound neat. Prefer our rhinos though.", pulls the wolfmarine up and acts entirely normally.

I just thought the idea of a proud marine being caught off guard by the peaceable Conservator's pissing massive mounts was amusing.

>>
>>34162316
They get on well with one Rogue Trader. He is so far the only one to visit their patch of the sky.

The Inquisition ignore them. They live a long way away from anything, their planets are of little to no value, their influence is minimal/non-existent and hardly any one will notice or care if they live or die. Except the Mechanicus. They will be happy. On the list of things to worry about the Conservators fell off the bottom a long time ago.
>>
>>34162443
Considering they incorporate recovered geneseeds when there is no feasible way to return or store them, if they didn't they sure as fuck do now.
Their return of the Grey Knight's geneseed spawned an actual Epic and gained them a holy relic. It isn't often possible for them to return geneseeds, though they do then have a gene-debt to pay.
Way I figure it, the existence of geneseed recovery and usage is kept within the chapter, and who has who's geneseed is kept strictly with the Chapter Master. Other Chapters just know sometimes, for no discernable reason the Conservators will pull out all the stops to help them.
That way they know that they are citizens of the Imperium as a whole, not a scion of the Salamanders or the Ultramarines but Conservators with a Conservator geneseed. It might not have been before, but it is now. And the Conservators are of all the Imperium.

What they REALLY should do is gather what few official Techpriests they have left and send them with more mechanically-inclined colonists to Chiron to start rebuilding. Send out a casting call for Techpriests that have some humanity left in their artificial hearts and are being held back on their advancement for having weak, fleshy emotions. Build your own fucking Forge World.
>>
>>34162916
> that have some humanity left in their artificial hearts
>>
>>34162916
Chiron has a significant ork infestation though. And they're not the weak ones with wooden clubs and stone axes, but the ones who have been looting the ruins and have guns and mega armor and all the usual toys. So the scav runs generally only last long enough to get in and get what they need before pulling out fast enough that the main horde can't come down on their heads.
>>
>>34162038
Well, this IS 40k. You're gonna have to be a big boy to survive against Gauss Rifles, Railguns, and Heldrakes, after all.

And to carry a space marine.
>>
>>34162916
Maybe that call is going out? Chapter Master has to do something all day.
Problem is, that Forge World real estate has some squatters.. And going to Chrion is sort of a black mark on an AdMech's record.
I can sort of see the occasional lone techpriest grudgingly accepting an escort on the planet surface if he wants a poke around though, say if he thinks there's something of worth at these coordinates, that he could then show off back at Mars to make up for the whole... being nice to the Conservator thing.
>>
>>34162916
There is a distinct possibility that they are working towards this.

Sadly its not going to happen soon. The Chiron forgeworld is crawling with orks and no one but the Conservators give a shit. They need a lot of reinforcements to to clear it and nobody will send any.

So its not going to happen.

Not yet.

Maybe when they have got to the point where their soldiers are holding locally made automatic weapons, driving their own tanks, wearing their own carapace armour. Maybe then.

Maybe then they will retake the Forge World, call the tech-priests back to their holy ground and build an empire to put Ultramar to shame.

But they will have to do it without help from the Imperium.

One day.

It could be a thousand and more years in the future but one day.
>>
>>34162916
>>34162954
Also I like this.

Not a loud call, just a quiet understanding that they'll welcome the priests who otherwise might be sidelined.

Not that they have too much fancy stuff to interest the priests, but there would be those out there who would be content building dams and aqueducts and such to help the common people out, I'm sure.
>>
>>34162964

Put it on the to-do list, or just fortify the shit out of an extremely defensible Hive Spire and fight to reclaim it from there. That way, the future Forge World has a population that will make EXCELLENT Skitarii.

Besides, you can't just leave a ruined Forge World infested with advanced Orks lying around. You're just asking for a gigantic Evil Sunz/Kult of Speed WAAAGH!!! with heaps of looted weaponry a metric fuckton of Gargents and Stompas to come knock knockin' on yoyr door.
>>
>>34163076
Yes, they're certainly planning on it, but it's a long term goal that they know they can't pull off now.

It's like >>34163056 says. One day, far from now, the Conservators will have a magnificent kingdom.

But that day is far from today. At 'present' they are small and weak, but they are the seed from which something truly amazing will one day emerge. Comparisons to a second Ultrimar could very well be accurate if they survive long enough to build it.
>>
>>34163076
The Forge world is probably on several Chapter's "to-do" list. But it's not quite about to go critical, and the Conservators keep a close eye on it, send reports on the current situation, disrupt potential focuses for the WAAAGH!! and stuff like that. So everyone else is still busy clearing more dangerous situations and will get around to it when they have a minute.
>>
>>34163076
Most of whats left of the fleet (not much) is in permanent orbit of Chiron.

If it looks like they are building anything that might possibly be something that could leave the surface they drop a nuke on it.

They would level the whole world into a glowing ball of radioactive glass but for the fact that they need the junk down there.
>>
I guess Tzeentch would have the greatest success in corrupting them.
Wouldn't you like to change the situation you're in? Improve your lot? Make Dekara a holy planet as if it orbited Ssol itself! Change things so YOU controlled Chiron, not leaving it to some Orks? Had the power to demand your fellow Chapters showed you some respect? Even the AdMech and their precious machines?
So much to change, so much that you have to face. With only hope pulling you through these trials... Maybe you would like some assistance changing things?

Honestly they've been pretty lucky there's no real chaos presence in the region. That's the nature of the Imperium though, some worlds never experience war at all, some know only war. And some get off with only Orks.

Maybe they get on OK with the eldar.

At least some of them.

Maybe their little star-kingdom is keeping the orks nicely bottled up on that forgeworld. orks that would otherwise have come out of that scrap heap with an armada that could blot out the sun.

In all of their visions the Farseers saw the chapter deploying onto the forgeworld and dying alongside the tech-priests.

This did not happen. It freaked them the fuck out.

Those orks should have stomped a number of exodite worlds completely flat. It did not happen.

They are grateful that it didn't happen, of course, but it still freaks them out a little. They would like it to carry on not happening.

Sometimes eldar rangers start taking out orkish leaders when the marines go on a scav run. Sometimes a squad of aspect warriors appear out of nowhere and fight alongside a squad of marines.

Often after a battle the captain in charge will offer them a meal at their home, as is tradition. God-Emperor alone knows he doesn't like the pointy eared bastards but if they don't maintain politeness then it makes the chapter look bad. Every time the eldar have looked down their noses at the marines and turned away.

Up until the last time.

A squad of rangers followed them home, sat in their great hall, ate and drank with them, said their goodbyes and left. It was a quiet affair with nobody sure what to say.

The Chapter Master is still pondering why they accepted the invitation now or at all. Possibly they did it just to fuck with their heads, possibly they wanted a free meal or maybe they were just being friendly. Or maybe as they were outcasts and felt no bond to honour old grudges.

Is this good fluff or bad fluff?
Elves sort of fit with the semi-fantasy world or maybe not.

>>
>>34163915
They have the rank still.

Its mostly those with extraordinary oratory skills.

Their view is that the Emperor was a God, then He became a man and united humanity against the darkness and now Hes a God again. As a man He was a human and so was flawed but now Hes a God again.

Chaplains lead ceremonies, deal with ecclesiarchy missionaries and help the other marines with what ever psycological problems they have. They also, with the apothecarium, deal with the recruitment.

Unlike many chapters they don't push their beliefs on their resident populations. Its just been spreading slowly and calmly.
>>
>>34164026
I'd still say they still have a Chaplain. He might not spend much time shouting "Venerate the immortal Emperor!" at the top of his lungs like some other Chaplains, but his duty is still to look after the mental state of his battle-brothers and ensure their loyalty.

The Mechanicus sidelines any and all members that are not ruled purely by cold logic. Fleshy emotional responses like compassion, empathy, or hanging onto the simple pleasures of a walk through the woods and time with family are all serious black marks. Techpriests in the nearby Sector sidelined for these reason could hitch rides on the Rogue Trader cargo vessels bearing grain from the March and help lay the foundations for something great. And if some of them have odd ideas about the legitimacy of standard Machine Cult dogma or a fascination with Xenotech, they won't have the resources or secrecy to do anything serious, much less the spare time, and the only available Xenotech is Orkish, making about as useful to a Heretek Cult as a paycheck is to a Servitor.
>>
>>34166105
Yup. Remember that this chapter is building itself up slooooooooowly. And it kind of fits with the desperate choices motif of the chapter
>>
I get the feeling this is the kind of chapter that if they got buttfucked from all sides, like half of the Imperium would bro-op to aid them because out of all the hearts they've touched and people they've left impressions on forged unbreakable anime tier friendship bonds

Like, if the most dickedheaded chapter ever got a Psychic phonecall saying these dudes were under attack in the worst way possible, the collective reaction would ammount to AW HELL NAW and then they proceed to utterly obliterate the opposition in unison.

Like, this is the general area in Warhammer 40k where you could host holiday specials, thanksgiving, retirement, bedtime stories, cookies and milk, wholesome family values, and the only place in the universe where you can place Mephiston in and no one wet themselves causing him to make the exact opposite of that grimace of his which is actually even creepier to behold, because it's like when Batman smiles.
>>
>>34167081
I can see the mechanium putting preasure on those chapters though... but yeah, if a tyranid hive fleet came rorring down on them, they might get a full crusade fleet running to save them.

Though... it would be really cool to just add a squad of brown marines to a normal SM army, representing a few Conservators showing up to help. No special rules... just a flavor choice.
>>
Do they use autoguns or do they just reload bolt shells?

Or do they literally use bow and arrows?
>>
>>34167081
...You don't know much about the Marines Malevolent, do you?
>>
Hey, has anybody thought of what this chapter does for Assault Marines or Devastators?
>>
>>34153244
OP, I love this Chapter. And I think I love you. Forget all the canon inconsistencies, this is amazing.

Eagerly looking forward to the next installments of Battle Brother Marcus Killian.
>>
>>34167081
I've been struggling to place that exact kind of feeling but you've put a good description of it, but too bad that this can't happen. One reason is the Marines Malevolent are a thing.
Also I get the idea that these guys still aren't perfect. They can lose people on their scavruns, it just so happens that their battle brothers would fight like hell to recover that gear and geneseed because HOLY SHIT ITS SO IMPORTANT AND THAT MAKES YOU CARE SOOOO MUUUUUCH FOR THE PRECIOUS LITTLE BUGGERs.
>>
>>34167382
Yes? Bows are generally limited to scouts against the native low tech orks. Though they are explosive tipped...

Auto guns might be used by the PDF, but they use las rifels more friquently.

Though some of their heavy weapons are effectively scorpions loaded with massive explosive quarels.
>>
>>34167445
They probably have more assault marines than codex standard and far fewer devastators. Devs would probably mainly field lascannons and and missile launchers, since one doesn't require ammo and the other has fairly simple ammo. Plasma cannons don't require ammo per se, but probably need some hard-to-get spare parts for when they break down and bolter ammo for heavy bolters is scarce as it is.
>>
>>34167964
Both break down though... and their techs are busy making bolters/bolter ammo.

Devistators also compete with psykers with focus rods. Magic might not be free, but it takes another resource.
>>
>>34167658
In addition, it makes my homebrew chapter seem bland as fuck.

Inspiring stuff OP.
>>
>>34168150
Missile launchers aren't exactly complicated though, and lascannons are based on the same rugged technology as the lasgun, right? Not too difficult to fix and it's got loads of firepower.
>>
>>34167805
I speak of the Conservators themselves, not their subjects.
>>
I'd like to see the people of the March developing as well, both becoming more civilized as the Conservators and some immigrant Techpriests introduce simple technology, and at the same time becoming more warlike as they take up arms to defend themselves against the feral Orks instead of relying totally upon the Conservators for protection.
>>
>>34169527
Issue of setting versus stroyline... yes that evolution is starting, but there has been so little time. Given time yeah, this is prime grounds for a new ultramar... in a couple centuries, maybe half a millennia. Not in any short amount of time.
>>
>>34170006

I was thinking more along the lines of pike-and-bow formations supporting the Scouts against feral Orks, or fighting alone if there's no help.
>>
>>34163723
I give this my official seal of 'I like it'

Also I'm back and my feet hurt.
>>
I'm a little tired tonight so I'm not sure how much more I'm going to get written, just bumping for right now.
>>
>>34169467
Auto guns just don't have the punch to drop an orc easily. Those are the chapters most common enemy, so it is more an issue of always needing something poerful enough to drop one.

Also, about las cannons... perhapce they were often deemed to heavy? When the chapter was losing troops left and right, and carrying out the las cannon meant not carrying out a wounded brother.

So the chapters las cannons were mostly lost, what few remain generally being equipped to what few tanks they have.

/co/mrade here, looking into this stuff and wiki delving, are the relations 'completely' blocked between them and the Mechanicus?
Wiki I'm looking at says a 5% gene-seed tithe is required of all chapters to check for purity. Unchecked and from all manner of sourcess this could go awry in time. Not sure what it means by purity, but looking at other gene-seeds I suppose it implies stuff like Red Thirst or bursting into flames.

This is some pretty awesome stuff. Might get into 40k if I can find a local get together/shop not coated in doujins.
>>
>>34175006
Conservators aren't daft, a corrupted geneseed isn't recoverable. So if they are examined, hopefully they just come up as chimeric, but individually stable.
And officially blocked by the AdMech seems to be the decision of the day, coupled with a bureaucratic mess that leads to the majority of the Admin not even knowing they're alive or uncaring to bother sending shipments if they're supposedly self sufficient and HOLY SHIT EYE OF TERROR GUYS, THROW TERMINATORS AT IT. Oh and the High Lords need a new hot tub.
The Conservators were a last minute decision to grab all the chapter-less marines, throw a coat of paint on them and send them to guard a couple agri worlds instead of moping around Terra. It's hardly surprising they're forgotten about except locally.

Hey, there's a thought. What were the Conservator's colours before they went full poverty monks?
Oh and we should think of a nice name for their Chapter's flagship orbiting Chiron to keep a handle on the Ork situation. Whatever kind of ship that may be.

They can't really build autoguns on any real or useful scale yet so they have to import them and if your going to do that you might as well import a las-rifle.

>>34170105
Half the time it's pike and how formations and no marines fighting orks. The works are an epidemic and the brothers can't be everywhere at once. If they wait for the brothers to turn up, and they will turn up as soon as they can, the orks disappear back into the wilderness an the problem grows.

Also those pikemen and archers are part of the PDF so they have been trained for this sort of thing.

excellent. I really like this idea, and that's not only because I really like elfdar interacting with space marines on any other level than *they shoot at each other until everyone is dead*

So they're cordial with each other. Not fully trusting on either side but the elfdar are keeping a close eye on every prophecy involving the the Conservators and the Space Marines could actually tentatively consider the elfdar allies in battle from time to time.
>>
>>34179445
I'm guessing this is mostly because the Eldar have... pretty.. pretty good tech. And the Conservators are fully aware there the bare minimum for their league.
So they HAVE to play nice with the neighbouring xenos, because they can't afford to have them angry as well as the Orks AND the threat of Chaos. But at the same time, that necessity has resulted in some tentative respect.

Well last time I bumped this thread tripled in size.

Can Astartes have children?
>>
>>34185128
Apparently the Conservators can.

Even if not, its wonderful regardless.
>>
>>34185128
>>34185160
But Spess Mahreens are totally uninterested in sex. Though if they may have adopted them, then it would work.

On the other hand I'm asking myself...If Space Marines did conceive children, then would the offspring have some of his father's capabilities (minus the implants).

Of course that would only be passed from father to son. Girls can't due to Marine stuff being compatible with males only and that girls have cooties.
>>
>>34185274
The Conservators seem to be very socialized Marines. Have normal jobs, wives, being apart of the community. Basically taking the Salamander's thing of being apart of society one step further.

And maybe their indoctrination is a little different. So they aren't non-sexual as other Astartes.
>>
>>34185274
If the Wolves aren't trying to stick their genetically enhanced dicks in SOMETHING I'll eat a grot.

>>34185128
Don't see why not... The Emperor wanted shining examples of humanity, not numbered sterile automatons. Though the kids'd just be default humans. Good genes on the dad's side though.

Maybe usually they're supposed to give that up but the veterans in the Conservatory forgot to mention it to the recruits until it would have been awkward.
>>
>>34185128
Maybe the Conservators pick from heads of families, since they want the population to grow.

The end kind of petered off, I blame the alcohol. Anyway.

The greenskin was bellowing something to his underlings. His voice echoed out over the plains as they scurried to carry out whatever foul orders he had given. A'lendo adjusted his sights slightly, a miniscule movement of his lefthand fingers over the crystal inlay on his oculars that never the less made a crucial difference in accounting for the softly changing weather phenomena. His view went from mostly unobstructed to absolute clarity.
Some distance away from his position, a small squad of the large human warriors slowly made their way towards the orc encampment. Well, slowly from an eldars point of view anyway. The orcs hadn't noticed them, but it was just a matter of time.

The landscape was flat and mostly barren. Heavy human industrialization had left the planet ruined and sickly, and the following near-constant battles hadn't really done anything to improve the situation: pockmarks from missed heavy weapon shots and holes after artillery strikes littered the area. Discarded and ruined equipment poked up from the dirt and grime here and there and bleached bones, human or otherwise, still clad in slowly decomposing apparel added to the grim atmosphere.
>>
>>34187395

It would probably be one of the small ones that saw, Al'lendo mused. They always seemed to be more alert than their bigger counterparts. Or, if not more alert, hyperactive. He sighted one of the wretched little beings and trailed it as it jumped down from a wooden platform and dashed over the crude courtyard, waving a small metal object excitedly.

He returned his focus to the leader. The creature was big and carried several scars across his body. He was clad in some kind of makeshift metal armor and wielded a crude claw of some kind. He was certainly menacing, but then again that wasn't uncommon amongst orcs in general. The barbaric creatures thrived on combat and it seemed to be the singular crux of their existence.

"Do we move in?"
Silently, one of the striking scorpions in his retinue had appeared beside him. "They'll spot the mon'keighs soon if we don't" she said, echoing his own thoughts. Al'lendo sighed and lowered his oculars. "You know as well as I what the farseer told us about this assignment. It's crucial that the leader of the
mon'keigh warriors survive this battle, and they'll be hard-pressed to do so if the orcs can come and meet them on the open field. Look at them, they're wielding over-sized *bows*"
"Very well. Signal the others, we'll move up, take out the big orc, cause some ruckus and fade away as quickly as we can" he said. "I know that you're want to display your affinity for stealth but there's not enough time for you to sneak up there by yourself-"
>>
>>34187421
"And whose fault is that?" she broke off, snidely.

"-If you'd let me finish. I'll keep an invisibility field up, and we'll speed along the open grounds. You do your work, and we'll leave as quickly as we can"
In truth, Al'lendo didn't want to be here. He didn't care for the lost human world, he didn't care for the orcs, he didn't care for the grime that stuck to his robes and he didn't care for the human's foolish quest to retrieve the munitions that the orcs had looted and stockpiled.
Thus, he had dragged his feet every step of the way.

But this assignment was a direct request from the farseer.
"Make sure that the human warrior leader survives. The optimal course to ensuring this is to kill the orc leader."
Technically, the farseer wasn't *his* mentor, but to deny a direct request from someone on the council was a surefire way to ensure that his education would take 50, maybe even 60 years longer than it should and quite frankly, Al'lendo didn't want to become stuck on the path of the warlock. He hadn't told anyone yet, but he had become enamoured with the bonesingers as of late and he had seen a vision of himself with one of their bellowing instruments. He had liked what he saw.
>>
>>34187451
He also had to admit to himself that he held a grudging smeck of respect for the the human warriors. The way they had, unwittingly or not, ensured the survival of the eldar maiden worlds was a feat in and of itself, but the real reason that he held them in any kind of high regard was that they were so tenacious, and if nothing else enigmatic. The way they defied their prophecies. There was something special about these human warriors, these 'Conservators' as they had labeled themselves. He couldn't deny that.

"Let's be on our way" he said, replacing his helmet. The scorpion nodded and went to tell her companions. Al'lendo put away his oculars and gingerly took a couple of bone-white runestones from his pouch at his side. He threw them into the air and on their way down, they began to hover as if they had a life of their own and slowly began to circle him. He closed his eyes and opened his mind. The runes appeared as brightly glowing symbols in the air around him, and he slowly relayed his thoughts through them into the great ocean beyond.

The pending conflict was plainly visible on the waves that he saw, and he had to mumble a calming mantra under his breath. With a slow exhalation, he plucked at the strings of possibility and guided some of the writhing power from beyond into the realspace that made up the world around him. Transfixed, he wove them into a pattern that formed a softly pulsing field, using his sharp mind as a needle and a pillar. Satisfied with his work, he opened his eyes and looked at his companions. They shimmered softly to his witch-sight, and he knew that the spell worked for now. He motioned with his sword, and they were off.
>>
>>34187479
"Brother Riel, are you sure that the intel is sound?" Panar asked. They slogged through the muddied ground at a good pace. Far ahead, the wooden orc encampment loomed. Already they could see the greenskins scurry about, oblivious to the impending hazard that was the squad of Conservators that were heading their way. "Quite sure brother Panar. The ships readings were accurate. The orcs have accumulated quite the store of munitions. Bolter shells, lasgun packs, Even prometheum, strange as it sounds. It's likely that they've stumbled upon an old imperial cache. Do you see the palisade?" he motioned with his sword. "The tree's are newly hewn. The orcs wouldn't bother to raise such a construction if they weren't keen to keep their competition out. It's crude, even by their standards."

"If you say so" Panar said uncertainly. "Oh come now Panar, don't be such a pessimist. This is a great boon for us. Imagine, in just a short span of time you will be able to wield your bolter again" Riel responded, his grin obscured by his helmet. "Aye" a dark voice tuned in behind them both. "It's been too long since I heard the bark of my gun. It will be nice hold it in my hand again, and let it spit death at our enemies" brother Livia murmured. "The bow is a fine weapon, I won't deny it. But there's just something special about the weight of the bolter in your hands. How it kicks in your hands. It's the way it should be" he concluded. "It's all well and good to have a bolter that you can fire with, but a complete set of armor is even better still" Brother Agripina intoned. "A full set, with interlocking seals that enable you to work in any environment. Now THAT'S happiness."
>>
>>34187506
"WE KNOW that you're displeased with your metal shoulderpad brother Agripina, but you'll just have to burden it a while longer. You know as well as I do that they're working on repairing it best they can back on the ship. In the mean time, could you PLEASE shut up about it? It's the fourth time today, and it was as many times yesterday, and the day before that" brother Hostias cut in. "I'm just saying..." Agripina replied sulkily, if a great hulking beast of a man like him could sulk. Agripina was the largest of them all, standing a full head and a half taller than their leader, brother Riel.
"To think that the greenskins would do our work for us. If it weren't for the way they're mishandling the material, we should almost thank them" Riel said, defusing the situation with his ever-jovial attitude. "Imagine, soon we'll be bringing the fury to our enemies with the roar of a bolt instead of the whisper of an arrow"
Inaudibly behind their helmets, they all sighed almost simultaneously.

A sharp crack of lightning echoed across the plains.
"Look brothers!" Panar said, pointing ahead. A few paces ahead of them, the orcs shouted among themselves. Brief, guttural and angry cries. "Are they fighting?" "If so, whom?" Hostias asked. "Lets find out!" Riel said. "Brothers, to arms!" He shouted. They broke into a run and covered the last distance in the span of a few breaths. "For home and hearth!" they intoned in unison as Riel thundered into the crude wooden palisade with his shoulder, reducing it to splinters.
>>
>>34187537
Inside the encampment, it was chaos. Orcs were battering each other with sticks and fist and shots crisscrossed in the air bolt or otherwise. On top of a wooden gantry a huge orc laid crumpled, it's head missing and a large blackened hole in it's chest, a wisp of black smoke trailing upwards from it. "What on Terra..." Panar begun. "Worry about that later" Riel broke in. "Let's not waste this opportunity". As if to underscore the sentence one of the orcs hollered loudly in surprise. "Look, 'umies! Come on boyz, let's crump 'em before we continue crumpin' each other!". The creature hefted a large improvised axe and charged the marines, but Agripina had put a solid metal arrow between it's eyes before it had managed to take even two steps. "I don't get why you're so against the bow brothers" he laughed as he let loose another arrow. "It works well enough against the orcs!"
Livia joined him and added a score of arrows to the fire, piercing orcs and pinning them to the walls of the crude buildings surrounding them. "It's a fair point" he admitted. "But it's just not the *same* brother." "Worry about that later!" Panar said as he swept aside a small gathering of the smaller creatures with a broad sweep of his sword, orc blood flying in the air. "They may be disorganized, but they're still dangerous! Be on your guard!"
>>
>>34187568
As the battle quieted with the death of the last few orcs, Al'lendo sighed in relief. He and his retinue of striking scorpions had withdrawn from the encampment when it became clear that the human warriors were handling the situation, but it had been a close thing. The orc chief hadn't gone quietly as they'd hoped, and the whole camp had been on alert before long. The human warriors had been frightening in their effectiveness but the sheer brunt of the orcs had been too much even for them, and the eldar had been forced to stay longer than planned to assist them. The striking scorpions, while deadly, were not front line fighters and the battle had been confusing.

They were now watching them mop up from afar. He was exhausted from the strain put on his mind and the stones set in his armor were glowing white-hot from the chaotic energies they had shielded him from as he had pulled deeply from the great ocean during the battle.
One of the scorpions were nursing a wound on his chest, a lucky strike.
>>
>>34187600
"I still don't understand why we didn't send in the rangers for this" one of the scorpions said. "I relish the opportunity to lay waste to these barbaric creatures, but this is not the kind of operation we excel at" he said.
Al'lendo agreed with him, though he held his tongue. The farseer had been very specific in what kind of warriors they sent out, but he hadn't seen fit to share his reasoning. "Perhaps they're otherwise occupied." he offered. "Or the farseer predicted that the battle would require prolonged engagement. What does matter is, no one died and our mission was a success" "It was a near thing" grumbled the wounded scorpion. "Warlock, watch" one of them said and motioned towards the camp. Al'lendo turned and frowned at what he saw. The human warriors had gathered in the middle of the encampment. One of them held some kind of flag on a pole, it was painted with orc blood. He squinted his eyes, and his frown deepened. On the flag was painted the eldar symbol for peace. "Do we join them?" asked one of the scorpions.
Al'lendo pondered for a moment, hesitated, and then shook his head. "I'm done with this planet. Let's leave the co-mingling with the humans to our more xenophilic friends" he said.
"Warlock" the scorpion replied, slightly scornfully. "You use their word for themselves". Al'lendo stared at him blankly.
>>
>>34187626
"This is a waste of time. Why do you even know these runes?" Panar asked, cleaning his sword of blood with a piece of cloth. "Knowledge is power brother" Riel replied. "And besides, you saw how many orcs there were. Someone obviously made a mistake calculating their presence in this camp". "We could'ave taken them by ourselves" Livia said, lowering the pole with the flag. "They're not coming. Let's gather up what we can carry and leave the rest to the clean up". "I'm reminded of a saying, from my time before the initiation. Something about enemies and friends" Agrippa murmured as he examined a bolt pistol. The device was battered and scratched, and should by all rights not have been able to work, yet the orc that had held it had fired it with impunity.
Riel looked at the flag. If he felt anything about the fact that their allies let their call of truce and communion go unheeded, he didn't show it. "All debts should be paid" he said. "I'd very much like to speak to our mysterious allies. But I guess that'll have to wait until another day. Let us be off brothers, there's other places where we are needed"
>>
>>34187651
Aaaand that's it. Will Brother Agrippa ever have his pauldron replaced? Will Panar ever stop being a whiny bitch? Will Al'lendo come to terms with his respect for the disgusting monk'eights? Will the striking scorpions ever have names? Will I ever learn how to come up with good Eldar names? Who knows! only the future will tell
>>

That was nice, I quite liked it. I don't see any major errors here and it was quite well written, I enjoyed it. Thanks for writing.

I really hope you continue sometime so we can see them actually interacting, I think you've set that up quite nicely and I'm eager to see more!

One minor thing that a lot of people seem to get mixed up, their cry is "For hearth and home" Not home and hearth, that's the usual way it's said irl, at least in my experience.

Good read.

>>
>>34187850
Like the ones in Warhammer Fantasy amigo.
>>
>>34187968
Thanks! I really liked this, it fits in with the lore pretty well. Power armored brothers using bows would be pretty deadly because they could draw the bows in an instant with their enhanced strength, where scouts still have to put some heft into it.

Overall I quite enjoyed and hope you continue.
>>
>>34188417
That's kinda what I thought. Also imagine the poundage of those bows, the strings'd be like, metal wires. With the right arrow they could probably punch clean through a rock wall.
>>
>>34189265
I wonder how well Conservators do at stealth operations now. A camouflage cloak over their brown armor and bows could make for some highly unpredictable attacks during the night or against unprepared opponents.
They're basically low-tech Raptors. Imagine they'd get along fairly well too, Raptors being unlikely to turn away any help, and request maybe a half dozen battle brothers when in the area in exchange for them returning with as much ammunition as they can carry home. One of the more positive relations the Chapter has.
Though I think the Conservators are less combat driven and more relaxed than their Raptor brothers too. A Raptor will receive a harsher and more comprehensive training, though will not quite have the grounded worldview of their undersupplied brothers.
>>
>>34189758
>Riel, why are you collecting so many xeno suits in this battle? You can not use them.
>My Raptor brother, nothing goes to waste. They are useless to us, but the missiles and grenades make excellent mines. If they try to reclaim any of them they will be in for a surprise.
>>
>>34190188
Later that week, a Blood Raven battle brother sustained serious injuries while attempting to reclaim possible wargear left at the site.
He refused to give further details, but merely muttered about "Stupid earth-tones.."

haha oh that is glorious. The bloody magpies have finally has more than a match for their 'aquisitorial' skills.
>>
>>34189265
Why not crossbows instead of bows?

Are easier to master and if strong enough can pack a non indifferent punch. better than most bows of the same size
>>
>>34190273
"brother-Captain Angelos, look at this item that the Conservators 'bequeathed' to us!"
"It looks like a broken bolt pistol"
"Well it IS from the Conservators..."
"*sigh* hand it back to them"
"but brother-captain"
"Look at it, it's a broken bolt pistol. Just hand it back. We've got other items that we can have 'gifted' to us from other, more affluent chapters"

...

"Brother Riel, I found your bolt pistol"
"Ah, excellent, thank you brother Agripina. I was beginning to wonder where I had put it. I was just about to replace the housing with the new one that I finished restoring from the scav run last week when I lost it. With this, it'll be as effective as any pistol of the other chapters. I dare say, with the long life it has had it's pretty much a relic in it's own right. Ah, I've spent many hours calibrating and repairing the internal mechanics of this pistol. It doesn't look like much, but this pistol is a venerable old piece of wargear"
"Brother Riel, what is that insignia stamped onto the side? It looks fresh"
"It's... a raven with a drop of blood? How odd. No matter, here, hand this old shell back to the master-of-recycling would you?"
>>
>>34191341
Well we *are* talking about space marines here. They're quick to master any weapon, so I don't think that the 'learn-how-to-use-it' aspect is much to worry about.

Mind, I have no idea how bows and crossbows work, but wouldn't a high-poundage compound bow be stronger- and quicker to fire than any crossbow?
>>
Looks like we're autosaging. Good thread everyone, I'm glad that I decided to browse /tg/ when I did.
>>
>>34191645
Crossbows were made because they're easy to train people on quickly and en mass.

A Longbow is better in the hands of a skilled archer.
>>
>>34191695
Same here, first time in a year since I visited.
I'm going to try to save up money and make this chapter if feasible. Seems like getting a medley of second hand figures would be cheap and in line with lore. This hobby couldn't be too expensive, right?

Plus crossbows generally have shorter range than a bow the same weight and material.

Precisely, hence the marines using them.

Only issue I see is normal arrows versus explosive. An orc can walk of anything but a head shot... then agin, with full power armor, a calibrated autosense, and the even heavier draw bow... fuck full brothers just use massivly overbuilt bows. Head shots aren't a chalange...

Gotta size up the bow as well. Instead of a normal arrow, they're probably shooting things closer to javelins.

Even if it doesn't kill it might pin the Ork to another or some object in the environment.
