Welcome to the Kidpunk thread!

7th thread. 6th didn't make it to sup/tg/. Shamefur dispray.

Kidpunk is a genre in which children perform great feats of imagination while outside the supervision of adults. Think of Kids Next Door or Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

Kidpunk broadly encompasses those series featuring children protagonists who accomplish amazing feats of engineering, science, technology, or so on through childlike architecture or techniques that wouldn't really work for adults.

A common element is the unstated assumption that everything happening in the setting might just be the childrens' imaginations - so the KND tree fort is just an ordinary treehouse, Dexter's Lab might just be a science kit and an overactive imagination, EE&E's jawbreakers aren't actually twice the size of their heads, et cetera. On the other hand, perhaps children tap into a kind of magic that they eventually grow out of, magic powered by imagination that actually makes their thoughts become real.

The Kidpunk RPG system is a d20-based system that aims to capture the feel of this style; you play a kid with an incredible imagination, taking part in fantastic battles with weapons real and imaginary. Imagination is a valuable resource, and a careful balance must be struck between how cool your friends think you are, and how much your parents dote on you.

Welcome back lurkers!

We provide you with a fresh update!

We've gotten Equipments, Items and Crafting fleshed out. We've got a small array of Items that will grow bigger but for now it is only sample items for you to look at!

I don't believe we mentioned this but there's been an improvement in the navigation of the document, allowing you to use the links up top to travel all across the pages.

The Tinkerer also got a lot more love as we finished up Crafting. They look like they'll be ready to make all your laser-rifles and umbrella swords for the future!

Pets and Companions seems to be the next thing on the list, giving crunch to both Friendmaker and possibly the Tinkerer as well!

Stay tuned for more updates or join us in the IRC to share your ideas! You might even get to make a request to our own drawfriend as soon as said friend wakes up from his everlasting sleep.

Time in Kidpunk works as the Chaperone(GM) decides it does. My personal recommendation would be to simply ask people if they have any plans to do anything during down-times like school, etc. You could easily have classes be instantaneous, or you could play out special scenarios in them. You could also have recess only be a brief time giving you enough to do things you've decided before or give them a lot of time to do what they'd like.

It's all up to your own personal preference. Time-skips could be fluffed as the kids not remembering that time.

We've made the headings in to something that we feel is more user friendly.

There's now icons for all the three ranges and they will be used to help define the actions you can take.

Companions are on their way, but the mechanics are yet to be done. Currently we're making a list on animals one would have as a pet and brainstorming about what other kind of companions a kid could have.

It also makes me want to rewatch Recess.

But yeah, if we're talking about genre, I think the whole oppressive adults thing is a very common theme, but not a necessary theme. Because a work without that can still give off the same sort of vibe and feeling.

Just had an idea, maybe for a campaign or something: the end of the school year is coming, thus the kids have to get ready for the Ordeals of the Mind or else face the burning classrooms of Summertime School with Mrs. [name of that old lady in the Badman's section picture]. The games play around with the kids doing stuff that awards them "total studying time" for a subject, and have to work around quests to fill out enough to pass the school year. There are also fights against the perils of procastination, and a quest at the last moment to help a friend who has not studied at all.

Actually I was thinking more like the kids picked up their books to read them, and they are so boring even staring at the wall is more interesting than studying them. So they start spending IP (perhaps not actually spending IP, just the GM going with a minor imaginary treat from the list) to make stuff fun, and thus end up procastinating.

There could also be quests like going around in the park in order to do "field study" (obviously an excuse to go to the park and collect bugs and lizards).

I've gotta say out of the many things I've seen on 4chan /tg/ this is one of the more intriguing and fascinating ideas.

This extends way beyond Ed, Edd, And Eddy along with KND. Earthbound has some 'kidpunk'/'kidtech'. Brushing your teeth to blind your foes? Check. Eating Hamburgers for health and using condiments for extra health? Yeah! Though that's just more the wacky nature.

Costume Quest (Made by the same person who made Pyschonaugts) has you playing a children on halloween and your transform into amazing being when you don costumes, such as putting on a boxy robot outfit to become a giant mech during the combat scenes, to wearing a french fry costume and turning into spider french fry crab.

Plus I love the idea of how the world could work, making recess last longer to span a quest (Speaking of which, Recess is another great source for this). I also like the idea that the imagination of the world could merge with the real world at some farther point.

You could have a lot of grimdark things, like fighting the monster under your bed, dealing with a real life influence that effects them in character. (Your pet dies or something)

Actually as I keep typing a few more things come to mind. The Binding of Isaac has a lot of those elements in the game, in the most horribly way possible though. That deals with the fact that all his drawings is what he faces and that your dealing with his dark imagination.

Bridge to Tarabithia is a live action film if you want something real for a source. OH! We can't forget rugrats either!

Yeah! That works great actually!

I know they have a good amount of classes, bt I'm curious if there could be more.

One that came to mind was the idea of "The Goody-Two-Shoes". This the kid that listens to there parents, is well behaved, does well in class and tries to be nice and does the right thing. When they pretend they don't care much for 'blowing up there enemies' but rather they like to pretend they are doctor and are fixing you up, or they are chef to feed you.

I'm guessing this might just be the Buddy in the end.

There really is a lot of cool stuff they could add over time. One thing that came to mine is more severe disadvantages. It's interesting to think that kid in a wheelchair could have it be his great asset, becoming a robot or tank of some sort. They could also have lower chance of getting in trouble, stuff like that.

Oh, I just thought of a class! There has to be either a class or branching path that "The Catcher" who skills are based around kids who hunt around for bugs and lizards. I know when I was kid I spent a bunch of time collecting them.

Plus what you could do with the bugs could range from "Wasp Jar Bombs" to "Battle Snail"

I don't know, I'm gonna need to get some sleep and think about it.

Currently we're focusing more on making an array of "base" classes and get this thing test worthy. If this becomes a thing we'll definitely be adding to it.

Goody-Two-Shoes sounds a lot like a fluff for Buddy, or an alternate option.

So, we're not adding more Types right now. There's already 4 classes to pick from and 16 Types.

Rather, there's still mechanics to be worked on. Mental and Social have no practical uses right now outside of combat situations.

Kids Imagination=the Technological Flavor. (ramshackle things that shouldn't work, duct tape, nails, and stuff lying around the house are resources)
Kids are the central to conflicts (be it rebellion against rules set up by school, parents, or hell Other kids being in charge)

KND and Ed Edd Eddy are the principal influences for the thing though. So that should speak volumes.

Real Life is getting ready to hit me too frankly... and hard. Don't worry about it... i'm not that much better in terms of productivity... its mostly thanks to the expectations of the people in these threads that I've been making any output.

Looks well done though so far. Loving the art, it really pulls it together. You guys should hammer the setting out and do like a 10 page comic. Just a straight up KND plot rip would work. That'd draw in a lot of people.

I don't want to spoil a novel that inspired the whole setting... so writing a story AND a game in the same setting. I will fail I guess...but I gotta try.

Hey, Same guy who posted about the Good-Two-Shoes.

Goody Two Shoes, now that I'm awake and have thought about it, are in the weirdo class. They aren't regular Buddies who are willing to fight, but strongly morale for a kid. As mentioned before they don't get in trouble as often, study hard, are nice to people. They are the kids that parents say "Oh, they are just a little angel~".
They're unique thing would be they get +1 to all stats as long as they are not attacking someone. They don't like hurting other, due to there "Carebear" nature. I would imagine if they ever had "Prestige Cliques" They could become a white knight later on!

A few others came to mind while I thought of it, First off for the Jock type they're should be the Daredevil. That kid who always doing stunts to show off, knows the cool tricks, and most likely takes a karate class. I would imagine half the time it's not there raw strength in effect but there "Rad" factor which wows others.

For the Nerds, I thought of the Artist. They are one of the few who can make there ideas concrete, and show what they are thinking. This helps them create new ideas and really reinforce it's presence.

Finally for the popular is the Singer or Possibly a Class Clown.

I also thought of another idea for a source, Chuuyubi (I most likely messed up the spelling) Is this anime about kids suffering "Middle Schooler Syndrome". It's a perfect example of imagination powers at works, as well the reaction from real world to fantasy.

I hope this threat keeps going, I love this idea.
