You look around the parking lot, but don’t see Ranthix’s huge yellow hummer. But when you look inside through the windows, you have no trouble spotting him sitting with Waldric – he must be travelling in a different vehicle to be less conspicuous. They already seem to be discussing things in the nearly abandoned fast food restaurant.

As you and Isaac head into the place, you’re hit in the face by warm scents and flavors of Jack in the Box’s breakfast menu. “Okay, wherever you guys want to do secret meetings is like, your purview,” you say, pushing through the doors, “but we’d better be doing this thing over curly fries and barbeque sauce.”

“I have no problems with that,” Isaac replies, chuckling.
>>
>>34083831

A minute later, you join him, Ranthix, and Waldric, with your curly fries and barbeque sauce on a tray.

“So, Sierra, finally decided to join us?” Waldric asks, giving you a sarcastically charming smile.

Ranthix, who is wearing a Hawaiian shirt with the top few buttons undone, steals about half your fries without so much as a sideways glance and stuffs them in his mouth. “I thought you said you needed to work on yourself before you assumed the barony,” he says, through a mouthful of half-chewn French fries. Ew. “Are we deposing Waldric now?”

“Uh,” you reply.

“Nobody’s deposing anybody,” Isaac says, his tone serious.

You can feel Waldric’s annoyance with this tangent. “Oh what a shame,” he says.

"Bah!" Ranthix shouts. "You should be honored at what time the Imperiate has allowed you, court-rat!"

>Yeah, man. Preach it.
>So how are you guys liking Earth Christmas and stuff?
>Hey Ranthix, you look good today. Flowers are you, man.
>If you weren’t such an ass all the time, Waldric, I wouldn’t regret you being baron like, every day of my life.

To the Anon who mentioned Sierra looked like a bug-girl in the pic where she's giving the finger: I think you're right. Her eyes were too big there. Also weird horns.

I saw you updating the pastebin yesterday. I saw the preliminary versions where you'd only changed some stuff and ended up doing more later.
You're a good guy.

Just a couple things, though.

The way you have this listed
>Max Power Points: 32 (15 from landwells)
Could be confusing to some people. You have other things, like hellblaze, list the base damage and then the bonus after it. Going by the precedent notation, this could make some people think that we actually have 47PP. Normally I wouldn't bother saying stuff like this since it's pretty obvious we just have 32 if you've actually read the whole quest, but there's probably going to be a few people who only read the summary and get mixed up since there aren't any stat numbers in there to see or think about.

And does Sierra know whether or not landwell charges recharge? I was mostly just wondering if Well Tap was something she's actually tried before or if it's just something she knows she can theoretically do. If she done it before, does it affect the PP from the landwell?(If we Tap the Muir well, would we go down to 22 max PP?)

Part of it is that you made her irises+pupils solid white, so they just look like a light shimmer on a solid black thing. Her pupils are black, her sclera are black, but her irises are light blue. Make them a ring instead of a dot and that should make things better.

You have experimented with well tapping in your pursuit of landmaster mastery. It doesn't effect your passives from the well. It takes a few days for a well to recharge after its charge is used up, although you suspect you can improve your efficiency with how you siphon power off of them.

> It doesn't effect your passives from the well. It takes a few days for a well to recharge after its charge is used u
Ok, cool. Might wanna put that as a note after the well charges thing on the sheet, but I'll bookmark this either way. I can just tell that this is one of those things that will spark arguments and have people voting to not tap when we need to do it based on incorrect assumptions because the info wasn't readily available.

About the character sheet, Zelathis: stinging strike doesn't have a charge cost listed. Is that power really free to use?
>>
>>34083831
>>34084107
>-Zelathis-
>10 Charge Capacity
>Standard Use: 2d4 Slashing damage.
>Stinging Strike: 2d4 Slashing damage, 1d4 Electrical damage. On hit, target is electrocuted.
>Electric Blast: 1d5 Concussive damage. On hit, target is blasted backward. Cost: 2 charges
>Lightning Bolt: 2d5 Electrical damage. On hit, target is electrocuted. Range: 20 m. Cost: 3 charges.
>Absorb Electricity: Zelathis functions as a powerful capacitor, and will charge itself from any electrical force that comes into contact with the blade.

Stinging Strike is supposed to not use charges, right?
Can Electric Blast or Lightning Bolt be combo'd with a Stinging Strike or can they only be combo'd with a Standard Use or can they not be combo'd at all?
Absorb Electricity made me giggle about the thought of Sierra jamming her sword into an outlet and grumbling about how magic swords need better battery life.

Oh, and Predatory Reserves is listed as a stress sensitive power. Was that intentional, 'cause I'm not really seeing how that works.

>>
>>34085168
Not that anon I think the WALDO THE BETRAYER shit is getting old, but Waldric and Ranthix really aren't very comparable here.

Waldric turned on Meckor because he was put in a position where he thought not turning was certain death.
Ranthix didn't even really turn. His loyalty was to the Imperiate. Meckor was a general, but he turned on Sierra, who outranks him. Big R probably doesn't even see his actions as a betrayal, he sees Meckor's actions as a betrayal.

Basically, Waldric protected himself, Ranthix protected Sierra.

“Yeah. Preach it, Rax,” you say, laughing to yourself. “Seriously Waldric, if you weren’t such an ass all the time, nobody’d have a problem with you being baron.” You pause. “Seriously though, what the hell do you even do?”

“Me?” Waldric asks, feigning shyness. “Why, I just waste away in indolence, doing nothing but reveling in my own conceit from dawn till dusk. Why do you ask?”

Ranthix swallows his fries and answers your question. “The baron governs his fief, and commands what holdings he mas managed to accrue,” he says.

You try to piece together some meaning from that. “So. You’re responsible for a bunch of drug dealers and mercenaries?”

“I’m responsible for the peaceable existence of what few demons live in this little gem of a city,” says Waldric, scowling at you. “Which, to put it lightly, is difficult. Humans despise our kind with a passion, and not all that fall under my domain desire to live peaceably.”

“Which makes his business my business,” says Isaac, leaning back and folding his arms. “If a demon wants to live in San Fransisco, that’s fine. But there are a lot of things out there – maybe human, maybe demon, or other things – that are a threat to the public. Waldric, notwithstanding where he’s from or what he is, has been a great asset in my line of work.”

Waldric gives a politician’s smile. “It’s the least I can do. Without Isaac’s condescension, none of this would be possible.”

“So what you do in the meetings is basically…?”

Comparing the two.
>>
>>34085382
“We discuss the issues that face our communities and what measures are appropriate to respond to them,” says Waldric, in a matter-of-fact tone. “And of course, I coordinate my dealings with the Marshall. We wouldn’t want anyone being surprised by anything, would we.”

Isaac says nothing, but the weight of his presence speaks volumes.

“He is a shrewd leader,” Ranthix says to you, as an aside.

“A baron with an active conclave of three, where one refuses to uphold her share of responsiblity,” Waldric says, making a point of sounding overly tired. “Working with so little is difficult, and yet somehow I manage.”

You heave a heavy sigh. “Okay, fine. I get that maybe I haven’t really been a good conclave person.”

Isaac glances over at you. “You owe Waldric nothing.”

“Isaac the demonbane speaks truth,” Ranthix says.

You snap your fingers. “Oh yeah, that’s right,” you say. You dip some of your neglected fries into their accompanying sauce and snack on them. “I was meaning to say, Ranthix. I like your shirt. Flowers are totally you,” you tell him, smirking.

Well, it’s not exactly like you can’t like it. Ever since you saw him wearing Wolfgang’s hawaiian shirt, you knew he needed one of his own because reasons. So you got him a couple for Christmas.

Ranthix takes a second to reevaluate his appearance. “Truly a gift befitting a king, Sierra,” he agrees. “It shall forevermore be amongst my most prized possessions.”
>>
>>34085404
“And in the dollar bin at thrift stores everywhere,” Waldric adds, with poetic flourish.

“Somebody doesn’t know the meaning of Christmas,” you say, kind of put out at having your gift choice slandered. “Or maybe,” you say, smiling a little, “you’re just grumpy you got crappy presents. Actually, what’d you get? Or should I ask what Maviel got you?”

“Please,” Waldric says, holding up a hand. “Let’s not get sidetracked.”

Ranthix though has no problem being sidetracked. “His betrothed Hellion forged a comforting mantle for him, with needles of iron and threads of yard.”

Isaac nods undestandingly and gives Waldric one solid pat on the back.

“Oh man,” you say, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. “She knit you a sweater? You gotta show it to me.”

That actually manages to fluster him. “No,” says Waldric, gritting his teeth. He looks around impatiently. “Where is Mr. Crowther?”

“Unfortunately, Deletrius won’t be joining us today,” says Isaac. “He’s away on business.”

“And… why didn’t you mention this sooner?” he asks, sounding irritated.

“I was having fun,” Isaac says with a shrug. “We can get to business.”

“So business,” you say. “These helborn guys, are they’re not like, Nabuth’s kids or anything, right?”
>>
>>34085418
“Anything’s possible. They were Nabuth’s assets,” Waldric says, probably trying to pull your leg. “There’s a Nyphican that’s recently come back into the fold. He’s had some dealings with the hellborn in the past, and informed me as to their area of operation.”

Ranthix shifts in his seat. “From the tale of the Nyphican,” he says, both to you and Isaac, “they have become unwise and headstrong without the guiding influence of their master, and use their ability with abandon. They are likely to attract the attention of forces greater than their own if they continue on their present course.”

“They last thing we need are more demon hunters scourging the city,” Waldric says, seriously. “We need to reign them in. Failing that, we need to be rid of them.”

“So, do we have and leads on how to find them?” asks Isaac, all business. “It sounds like what these boys need is someone to explain the situation to them.”

“They have a fence. Simon Icart,” Waldric says, producing a manila envelope from the folds of his jacket. He opens it and throws a couple photographs on the table of an incredibly shifty looking dude with oily hair. “They launder at least a part of the money they’ve been stealing through him.”

Isaac takes the photo, takes a second to examine it, and lays it back down. “I’ve talked to him before,” he says, shaking his head. “I warned him to stay away from Meckor’s people but… looks like cheap gain won out yet again.” He reaches for his cellphone. “I’ll have my contacts with the police pick him up. They’ll be able to find something to charge him with, and I’ll go down to the department and have a chat. He’ll know how to find the hellborn.”

Well, looks like these guys know how to handle a problem. But it seems kind of like a blunt approach, to you.

We'd be having the cops pick up some randomass human lowlife named Simon and then interrogating him about the hellborn. We're not arresting the hellborn because we don't even know where they are.

And demons don't give a flying fuck about stuff like that anyway. If you get shit done and can keep people from killing you, what you do is always the right thing.

What the fuck?
>>
>>34086172
That is not what happened at all.
>>
I don't get it. Why do people think that having the cops pick up a mundane known criminal is going to go badly?

Why do they think that it's a bad idea to get the guy isolated in a police station so that we can question him without people seeing?

If someone sees him get picked up by the cops, they'll think that it's probably just normal criminal shit. If Isaac and all of the rest of us roll up and start questioning the dude out there, then if someone sees then they'll know something more is happening. On top of that, Simon could just call the hellborn up afterwards and tell them that Isaac is looking for them. If we throw Simon in jail for a little bit, then we have a window of time where he can't warn them.

Going ourself isn't even the precautionary choice. It opens us up to getting found out far more.

“You have this all narrowed down to a science, don’t you,” you observe.

“I’m good at my job,” Isaac replies.

“Though, one question. Speaking from experience, when somebody you know gets arrested, you tend to be a little more cautious,” you say. “If you get Simon all arrested and stuff, what if these dudes… what’re their names?”

“Alan and Scott,” Waldric says. “Their last names are unknown.”

“Okay, what if Scott and Alan like, hear about it and decide to go to ground?”

The idea doesn’t seem to bother Isaac. “Then in the mean time, they’re not making trouble. And if they don’t keep quiet we’ll hear about them sooner or later. That’s what always happens. And if they do get scared and skip town, then hopefully they change their ways so someone else doesn’t have to deal with them,” he says. “But the odds are just as good that we catch them by surprise.”

“I guess this is kind of your thing, then,” you say. Isaac is, after all, like, eighty years old and has probably done this dance more than a couple times. “Man, it’s cool that you’re way good at everything.”

Isaac laughs. “You know, I’ve been waiting my whole life to hear one of my kids to say something like that to me,” he says. “You want to come down to the station when I interrogate him?”

You smile. “Well duh,” you say. “I’ve never been on the other side of the glass before. You know, if this station isn’t a station I’ve been booked into before.”
>>
>>34086611

“We’ll have to cross our fingers about which one picks him up,” Isaac replies, smiling back.

“As heartwarming as this is,” Waldric says, “there’s another piece of business I’d like to discuss with you, Isaac.”

Your dad the Marshal gets serious again. “Yes?”

“As talented and helpful as Ranthix and Mr. Crowther are, both of them have other obligations that keep them from participating fully in my conclave,” he says. “And Sierra… you know Sierra.” He gives you a sideways look. “I’m a lord without a council.”

“But somehow you manage,” Isaac answers, firmly.

Waldric proceeds carefully. “I know your views on the subject, but there are none in the city eligible to assist me with management of the fief. Confidence in my rule is waning. I need councilors.”

Isaac doesn’t waver. “I’m not letting you import another Meckor, Waldric,” he says.

“The Baron’s concern is not an idle one,” says Ranthix, coming back into the conversation. “But at Sierra’s request, it is your concern which concerns me more, demonbane.” He scowls at Waldric. “One court-rat is more than enough. But put two court-rats in a kingdom, and through some inexplicable alchemy, you will have five factions vying for power.”

Waldric’s expression is disdainful. “Or leave everything to one court-rat,” he says, saying the derogatory term with great scorn, “and government collapses, and you have anarchy on your hands – not your fairytale chaos, Ranthix, but the kind that opportunists flock to like flies to rotting meat.” He looks back at Isaac. “You may have been just fine without a baron before the Conclave made your city a fief of Halth, but there’s no going back now. I need a conclave. A real conclave.”

Isaac is not pleased with Waldric’s demand.

>>
>>34087805
Honestly I'm conflicted if I even want to watch the next season. I don't want to risk the books being spoiled by the series and some storylines have practically caught up to the end of ADWD. But the showfags are a lot more likely to spoil stuff than the bookfags.
>>
You speak before Isaac has a chance to, trying to put off an argument. “Well, what if I started taking conclave stuff more seriously? I mean, I guess I’m not the best at stuff, but I can walk through walls so that has to count for something, right?”

Waldric looks like he has something to say to you, but after glancing at Isaac, says something else instead. “Your recklessness would hardly be better than you continuing to do nothing at all,” he says, off handedly. He delivers the line with perfect disregard for your offer, but the feelings you taste from him speak quite another story.

And although Isaac remains stoic, you can sense a little relief from him at your offer being turned down. He’s not so hot on the whole idea of you doing demon conclave things, and you get the feeling it’s something he’s discussed with Waldric previously.

If you spoke with Waldric without Isaac being around, he’d probably tell you something else entirely.

“Well,” you say, filing away the information for later, “how many demons do you need anyway? There really aren’t that many people you need to look out for here. Or is it like, some rule you need to have seven?”

“Preferably I’d have seven,” Waldric answers, “especially since who I have right now don’t have the time. But I’m prepared to work with less, if necessary. Two is the minimum.”

“What about Maviel?” you ask. “She’s a demon. She’s cool. Why don’t you ask her to help you out? She’s your most trusted advisor anyway, probably, right?”
>>
>>34087936

“I’d rather not involve Maviel with politics,” Waldric responds. You feel he’s not likely to budge on that front.

Isaac leans forward. “So who exactly are you thinking of bringing over, Waldric?” he asks.

“Kin,” Waldric answers. “People you can expect not to jeopardize the situation here.”

“If you expect me to give my permission, you’ll need to be more concrete than that,” Isaac says.

“One’s a cousin. Orias,” Waldric says. “He’s of House Vincain, a highblood of Belphegoran and Infernus lineage. He’s temperate and cunning, which work well for my needs. Some time ago he fell from the graces of his father’s court. He’ll be eager for an opportunity to like this, and he’ll know his place when he comes. There will be no intrigue or plot from him.”

Isaac remains impassive. “Who else?”

“The other is a Stygian named Ulam’uberatu. If he’s still alive, his loyalty is assured,” Waldric says, narrowing his eyes at some memory.

He starts to bring up another name, but you stop him. “Hold on a second,” you say. “I get that you’ve got a lot going on. But what I’m worried about isn’t that you’re getting help, it’s that I don’t know the people you’re bringing over.” Seriously, even if Waldric thinks someone is trustworthy, he might have a very different definition of what that means compared to you. “So yeah,” you allow, “you’re the Baron and it’s your conclave, but I think Ranthix and me should get a say on who gets to be on our team.”
>>
>>34087956

“She’s right,” Isaac says. “I don’t distrust your motives, but if you get your four demons, that puts our influence in the minority compared to your yes men. There needs to be a balancing force.”

“This is stupid,” Ranthix tells everybody. He points at Waldric. “Especially you. Balance and counterbalance, all of which goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing.”

You look up at Ranthix. If there’s anybody who can balance out Waldric or his ideas, it’s him. “Actually, if it was your conclave, who would you bring over?” you ask.

“I wouldn’t bring over anyone,” says Ranthix, stubbornly. “Conclaves are not for me! It would be unseemly.”

“Just – let’s say you have one anyway,” you explain. “Who’d you put on it?”

Ranthix doesn’t really want to go along with the idea. “I would be a conclave of one, scourging the land of cowardice with spear in hand and fiery indignation in the other,” he says. Wait. Is he actually trying to squirm out of giving you a serious answer?

“C’mon,” you say, elbowing him in the arm.

“Fine!” he yells, glowering at you. Some of the employees behind the counter jump at the sound of his shout. “For the purposes of this discussion - not your theoretical conclave,” he elaborates, “but the court-rat’s real conclave – I have two in mind who would have indisputable loyalty to you,” he admits begrudgingly.
>>
>>34087971

“And who would those two be?” Isaac prompts.

Ranthix scowls at Isaac. “Don’t mollycoddle me, demonbane!” he says. “I was merely pausing to lend emphasis to the individuals I was about to introduce to the Imperiate, so she would have greater understanding of just how indisputable their promised loyalty was to be!” he says angrily. He turns to you and ignores Isaac. “Their names are Xanissil and Xathix,” he says, with great pride. He pronounces the names Zanissil and Zathix, but you’re pretty sure if you spelled them they’d be with X’s. Ranthix watches you, his fiery eyes burning through his human glamor. “If it is your will, I will summon them to your cause,” he vows.

I have to admit, I kinda want to see what Orias looks like. I'm really curious about what a [BE]-[IN] hybrid looks like without [VE] thrown into the mix.

Probably because Sierra previously expressed a desire to not have more demons showing up.

Maybe we should change the asking about why he didn't summon them already to why he didn't mention them?

I'm pretty sure >>34088093 is right that Sierra said she didn't want more demons coming over. That and the whole wanting to get stronger before ruling meant that there really wasn't a reason to bring them over.

Give Wally an illusion of fairness, when we will still retain the majority in the conclave. Also remember that if he is actually plotting against us (which he might not be) he will use what little power we grant him with his best finesse.

“Cool,” you say, grinning. Friends of Ranthix are probably cool. Maybe? “I thought you said you didn’t know who I could trust though,” you say, recalling your prior conversations with him. “Why didn’t you mention these guys?”

Your simple question makes Ranthix struggle to answer. After a brief delay, though, he speaks. “Because they lack judgment,” he decides. “However, I find current circumstances render their inadequacies irrelevant.”

“So how do you know them?” you ask, curious. “They Thultal like you?”

Ranthix growls. “No,” he says. “Not yet. Initiates still – they have not yet undergone the Trial of the Sages. Summoning them here would ruin their training, but such is again irrelevant if it is your will.”

If getting them to come here will mean they never get to be gun Samurai, you’re not sure you want to interfere. “Maybe there’s somebody else?” you ask, feeling unsure.

“No,” Ranthix says. Then a thought occurs to him. “Perhaps basking in your enlightening presence will make better substitute for tradition,” muses Ranthix. “It has been too long since an Imperiate graced the thousand hells.”

Waldirc looks annoyed with the topic. “Don’t put too much stock in Ranthix’s undying philosophical devotion, Sierra. It’s not you he cares for, it’s a metaphysical dream. Don’t let it go to your head.”

“You,” Ranthix says, standing from his chair to his towering height so he can point dangerously at Waldric.

“Cease your slanderous insinuations, court-rat, or I’ll shove them down your throat.” From his posture and the hatred radiating from him like a burning fire, you’re not sure if he’s being completely serious right now or if it’s just another rhetorical threat.

Waldric keeps an even expression, and looks Ranthix in the eye, a dangerous gleam in his eye.

“Gentlemen,” Isaac says calmly, interrupting the quarrel. “We’re in a public venue.” He nods toward the front counter, where a couple Jack in the Box staff stand and watch the threatening spectacle.

Ranthix glares at the spectators, and resumes his seat. “No sacrifice is too great for the Imperiate,” he says in a low, threatening tone.

You clear your throat, trying not to be too awkward. It doesn’t work. “Well, if we don’t have to sacrifice anything, that’d be what I’d prefer,” you say. “Did Crowther have any suggestions?”

“He deferred to my judgment as Baron,” Waldric replies, straightening his jacket. “It’s refreshing that there’s at least one person in this city that respects the weight that accompanies my office. So what is it, Isaac?” he asks, looking to the Marshal. “Are you still adamantly no-demons allowed, or is this tit for tat deal enough compromise for you?”

Isaac considers it for a moment.

“Well if Ranthix says they’re good, they’re good,” you tell Isaac. You pick up your empty fry holder and shake it. “You guys have fun and stuff. I’m going to get more fries.”

You walk over to the counter and leave the men to stew over their deep intrigue. The cashier steps up, and you order more fries, a shake, and also something to distract Ranthix from your fries and shake, just in case.” As you’re paying, the cashier, a girl around your age, looks to the rapier at your hip. “Is that a sword?” she asks as your receipt prints out.

“Yep,” you say as she gives you your change.

“Do you do fencing or…?” she asks.

“No,” you say, shrugging. “Not really. But all the times I need a sword, I never have mine. I figured I’d start carrying it around when I can just in case.” You nod at the empty store. “How’s work?”

She seems distracted by you switching the conversation around, but she answers, and you chat a little as she gets your shake put together and gathers up your order as the guy in the back finishes making it.

“Awesome, thanks,” you say, taking your bagged items and heading back to the table. You find your people getting up and coming toward you and the exit, though.

You suck down your chocolate shake. “What’s the word?” you ask Isaac.

“Waldric and I are going to talk about this with the Magister, but I believe we can make it work,” Isaac replies.

“Cool,” you say.
>>
>>34090409

“Is me being here necessary any longer, or do I have leave to go do whatever I want?” Ranthix asks impatiently, looking back at Waldric and Isaac.

“Don’t contact your people until I give the green light,” Isaac tells him. “This isn’t the finalized plan yet.”

“You can go, Ranthix,” says Waldric.

“No he can’t,” you say.

Ranthix looks over at you angrily, as Waldric walks by and leaves the store.

You pull the Meat Lovers Burrito out of your bag and offer it to him. “I thought we’d be here longer so… you know. I got you something to keep you away from my fries,” you say, feeling really self-conscious for some reason. Maybe because you kind of put yourself on the spot. (+2 Stress: 3/100)

Ranthix looks from the burrito then you with a enquiring expression. He then snatches it from your hand. “Clever of you to have planned around my voracious appetite, spawnling,” he says, a note of satisfiaction his voice. “Your training begins to bear fruit - you are less stupid than you used to be.”

It’s not easy to elicit praise from the Thultal, and even then it’s usually in the form of backhanded compliments, but you’ll take it. (-2 Stress: 1/100)

You, Isaac, and Ranthix head outside and into the frigid fifty-five degree weather. You fight off the urge to shudder at the temperature change.

Isaac pulls out his keys, as Ranthix starts walking off at a slight angle to you, probably heading back to wherever he hid his car.

“I’ll have to make some calls, but we’ll probably find him in the next couple days,” he says. “Your day isn’t ruined yet.”

You laugh a little at the comment, and brush your hair out of your eyes.

“Do you and Rowan have any plans today?” Isaac asks.
