/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are Special Agent Declan M. Cryan of NERV's Section Two. You are living with two fourteen year olds, a thirteen year old, a smoking hot twenty-nine year old that happens to be a superior officer, and seven varying aged Section Two Agents armed to the teeth and more than willing to die in a stupid last stand to defend the children in the house. You are also willing to die doing the same but you would prefer not to. Living has so much more appeal than death, you've always mostly always after all no one except Mari knows about that incident on the carrier thought.

The scar underneath your eye itches, slightly, and that puzzles you. It wasn't there when you went to sleep last night. Shrugging it aside, you eye the Children lined up in front of you in the living room of the house Commander Ikari had you purchase. The Children, excepting the First, try not to fidget under your cold gaze.

“Some ground rules,” you tell them, while two of the other Agents patrol the outside perimeter. “I am not your father. I am not your mother. Don't start trouble. Do the chores listed on your bedroom doors. You get pregnant or get someone else pregnant, take responsibility. You're young adults. If you get into a fight, finish it. If you start it, you're in trouble here. I have no problems with you defending yourself. If someone fucks with you, fuck them right back. If you can't, see me immediately - I have armory access. Any questions?”

To your disappointment, there are no questions. Mari is snickering quietly behind her hand, Asuka is telling Shinji to not get any ideas, and Shinji's sprawled forward on his face, a foot from Asuka on his back. The First, Rei, is simply staring at you as though you're speaking tongues.

>>
“Right,” you mutter. “No questions. Get to breakfast,” you order with finality, and they all take off, leaving you to follow at a more sedate pace. Your presence behind them keeps the Second from harassing the Third too much, so she goes after the Fourth, instead, leaving you to wonder why the Commander thought this was a good idea. You'd have preferred to bury them all in a bunker and never let them out, but frankly that wouldn't have gone over real well.

Breakfast consists of one of the Section Two men you picked, a Gunnar Rambo, cooking pancakes. They turn out to be fucking AMAZING. Asuka glances you, and then whispers to Mari. Mari snickers, and you scowl.

“Declan,” Mari begins conspiratorially. “Can YOU cook like this?”

[]Yes, you can cook pretty good food.

“I was... Not the best at cooking in a kitchen,” you allow her slowly. Mari giggles while Asuka seems more concerned with the pancakes and drowning syrup on them. “When we weren't in the field I was either eating at a friend's, eating take-out, or in a pub.”

“So,” she says with some kind of grin on her face. “You're good at cooking in the field?”

“Sure,” you say. “Stew, kebabs, boiling grass. That kind of thing.” Mari snickers even harder at 'kebab', and you look at her with one eyebrow raised. “We used our bayonets as cooking utensils and to eat stuff like squirrel and kebabs. Grass was finger food, really, if it was winter grass.”

“No one cares about what you ate in some third world hell-hole,” Asuka breaks in. “What I want to know is how you're going to guard us while we're at school.” You consider the issue, then shrug.

“That's classified,” you tell her. “Need-to-know basis only. Just trust that we'll be there.” Shinji nods confirmation of this, and then the Tactical Commander stumbles into the kitchen. Gunnar hands her a beer with the ease of a man that's been practicing a while. You turn your back on the kids and reach into a cabinet, where a bottle of Laphroig, aged ten years, awaits you. You pull a Makarov from the back of your waistband. You rack the slide back, and use it to open the bottle of Laphroig.

Retrieving a shot glass from a different cupboard, you add a couple of ice cubes from the freezer, and then pour yourself a drink. Gunnar, Misato, and the Children all look at you.

“What?” You say, reflexively on the defensive.

“Isn't it a little early for the hard liquor, sir?” Rambo asks, and you look at him. You shrug, and down the whisky. You pour yourself another, and look back at the kids, who are now staring awkwardly their plates.

“But your stomach isn't full,” Mari points out. You shrug.

“I've been drinking longer than you've been alive. I'm fine.” You knock back the second drink, and then take the ice into your mouth. You crunch it, and put the bottle of Laphroig back, then wash out the tumbler.

“But for the sake of the kids,” you allow, “I'll refrain from drinking in the common rooms.” Misato doesn't exactly seem pleased by your gracious allowance. Doesn't matter to you.

“How are we getting to school? We're too far to walk,” Shinji interjects quietly.

“Someone will drive you,” you tell him idly, while you peruse the contents on the refrigerator. You finally settle on cold pizza, taking four slices and forming a sort of pizza sandwich. You take a bite of it and move to lean against the sink.

“I certainly hope it isn't Misato,” Asuka says, and you cock an eyebrow.

“Something wrong with my driving?” Misato asks with a grin.

“N-no! Not at all,” the Second says, and you raise the other eyebrow.

“Yeah, one of us will be driving the Children, ma'am,” you tell Misato.

“Who gets to ride shotgun?” That's Mari. Your blood runs cold at the question.

“I do,” you tell them. “I'll be able to shoot and take the wheel if I need to. It's a nice, gentle drive into town. Besides, one of you needs to be able to drive something other than giant walking death cyborgs. That one of you is Shinji.”

“Ugh,” Asuka groans. “The Great and Invincible Shinji! Why not me?” She whines at you, and you turn to look at her.

“None of that shit,” you tell her. “You're teammates. I don't give a shit if you like him or dislike him, love him or hate him. Put up with him, watch his back, be ready to knock someone's teeth in for him. He'll do the same for you, won't you, lad?”

“Y-yes,” he says, staring at the table.

“Besides,” you say offhandedly as you take another bite of pizza, chew, and swallow it. “You've got to be mature to be able to drive a fucking car, Second.”

“Then why have you got a license?” She snipes at you, and you take another bite of pizza. Mari is trying to hold laughter back from behind her hand, and Shinji is- being Shinji, sitting there quietly and staring at the table. Misato is on her second beer, and Gunnar has disappeared, leaving you with the dishes. Cunt.

Turning the sink's faucet on, you roll your sleeves up and start washing. “I don't,” you say cheerfully. “My Northern Ireland license expired four years ago, and I haven't gotten one from Japan. Although... my NERV ID functions as one when I'm pulled over,” you trail off.

“How often does that happen?” That's Mari. You wonder why God hates you. Probably the deal with something not exactly human, you reflect.

"When I feel like taking time out of my busy fucking schedule to entertain motor cops. More often than I'd like,” you admit to the brats. “Anyway,” you finish, “that's mostly Misato.”

She looks at you, offended, and finishes her beer. She stands, and you determinedly ignore her glare. “I'm off to work,” she says. “Don't get the kids killed,” she tells you. Grinning, you wink at her.

“I'm going to be letting Shinji drive the Aston Martin, I should think. Not enough room on the Indian.”

“I- I just- You are going to die horribly one day,” Misato tells you over her shoulder as she leaves. It hits closer to home than it should have, the dream with Lily fresh in your mind. One hand unconsciously tightens into a fist, to deny your death with all your might but then you unclench it. It's a moot point, isn't it? After all, you've died so many times-

-so, so many times- blood and death and fire and you're shoving a fist into a gaping hole in your chest, struggling to stay alive long enough to make a deal with something beyond your ken, you don't want to die you want to kiss your girlfriend when you wake up and make love to her in the sunlight of morning and then drowse until noon and then kiss her slowly and make love aga-

You swallow heavily. “Right,” you say. “Right. Don't get the kids killed. Can do.”

“Good,” she says, and leaves for good. You turn to stare out the window, above the sink, and fix yourself a cup of black coffee. You swallow the bitter drink down, and revel in the bitterness and scent.

“Everyone finished with breakfast?” You ask. Two mutters of confirmation and one nod greet your quest. “Good. Go brush your teeth and saddle up.” They file out of the room, leaving you alone with your coffee and memories of deaths that haven't- had happened?

You take another sip of coffee, and think hard. While the kids are at school you can catch up on paperwork, but it's not too bad, you're sure. You could instead read intelligence reports regarding the Russia situation, as well as what the UN is doing. The Americans are probably blustering, your own native UK is probably trying to keep its head down while Russia, America, and the UN continue to wrangle over sovereignty issues and the UN's continuing mission.

That's boring, but necessary. As well, you could cultivate some of the ex-pats that frequent the Tricky Dicky and try to pick up a few contacts. Someone might be in a vital industry or position with access to information you'd need- for what, you don't know. But knowing is half the battle, and violence is always the other half.

You've heard scattered reports of some more cultist activity cropping up in Southeast China, but that's more than a simple boat ride over. Then there's the usual superstitions of Section Two being infiltrated as fuck by Reds and worse. All in all, just another day at the office. The question is, though, what to do?

You take another sip of coffee as the Children troop back into the kitchen, and hand Shinji your key-ring.

“Everyone out to the garage,” you grin. As soon as all their backs are turned, you cross yourself smoothly. You don't know if someone out there is looking out for you or not, but it can't hurt to have them on your side.

The drive to the school is, thankfully, not dangerous. It's still early enough there's not a lot of traffic, and Shinji is a careful driver. There's no conversation, so you listen to the news on the radio. It's boring.

“Declan?” Shinji begins after Asuka and Mari leave. He's still sitting in the driver's seat, so you turn to look at him and not at Mari trying to sway her hips.

“Yeah?”

We must also apologize to the poor Aston's clutch for any transgressions Shinji may have committed against it.

“I'm honored you thought of me,” you begin slowly, unsure of how to do this without being too sappy. “It would be my pleasure to attend,” you assure Shinji. “I've got to clear it with my superior, and I might be delayed, but even if I have to abseil through the window to make it, I will,” you tell him.

He smiles up at you and thanks you, then takes off. You feel as though you should have hugged Asuka before she went into the building. And then it's Mari, and even Rei, and then your head suddenly begins pounding as though a chain-gang is doing road-work in Louisiana in your head. Wincing, you take a breath, and lean back for a moment.

It eases after a moment, and you take another breath, before stepping out of the car. You move around to the driver's side and take your rightful place. “I'm sorry, baby,” you tell the car as you turn it back on. “He's gotta learn sometime, and you were a project car. Where's the fun in project cars if you can't turn 'em over to teenagers to let loose with, sometimes? Besides, I can always fix you up if he hurts you too badly.”

The car doesn't say anything. You pat the console a couple of times, and begin your drive to the office. Somehow, though, you get the feeling the car is sweating audibly. Shrugging it aside, you ponder the headache. Is Lily failing in keeping your subconscious with his horrible- mostly horrible there was some good she said but on the whole horrible horrible terrible-

Is Lily failing in keeping your subconscious pinned? Is he bleeding through? Are you going nuts? (More nuts than usual, that is?) Why is there nothing good on the radio, EVER? These questions, and more, devil your drive to the GeoFront.

[]Why is there a report about the USA in your fucking inbox?

Shouldn't we go to Gendo and just explain what the fuck we've got going on in our head? This is pretty much the only way I can think to get off of the lilith train. Either that or he'll get us a robot and the spear at that point
>>
>>34073288

NOPE

THAT IS A HORRIBLE IDEA

Unless we're seducing Gendo, or reporting in the normal course of duty, we should stay the fuck away.

Now, if you were in favor of helping the man get over his undead wife through vigorous application of liquor and irish dickings...

Why should we be on the dream monster's train? What good will it give us? None. I'm not even convinced anything she's told us has been the truth so far.

Also we spent the first three quarters of this game giving our hallucination the finger and playing tableflip to suddenly go all gaga over this bitch who has ripped our subconscious apart.

Why?

“Why is there a report about the ruddy Americans in my fucking inbox?” You ask the empty cubicle. No one answers. Sighing, you pull that one and toss it onto the empty space on your desk, and then stand. You're going to need coffee and notepads and pencils for this. You find the pencils and notebooks in a supply closet, which also contains several rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition for them.

The notebook and pencils go on your desk, next to the file. When you find the coffeepot, you look at it slowly. Then you look around. Then you take the entire fucking pot back to your cubicle with you, and you light up a cigarette.

“REPORT CONCERNING RECENT EVENTS IN NEVADA'S NERV BRANCH AND OTHER LOCALES ACROSS THE US,” reads the big block red letters on the outside of the file, including, “EYES ONLY,” and, “TOP SECRET,” and your personal favorite, “IF FOUND OFF-SITE WILL BE EXECUTED IMMEDIATELY.”

Shit, guys, it's not like you're a fucking traitor. NERV is fighting the good fight- that's what helps you sleep at night. Well, the quite large amounts of alcohol help with that, too, but you're digressing. Sighing, you open the file. It was probably prepared by some nameless sod in Section Three trying to pretend he was James Bond. You do the same, sometimes. It doesn't help.

The introduction is bland- it provides a background of events concerning your mission in Nevada, as well as America's reaction to the Russian issue you may have sort have forced. Whistling, you skip ahead. “...of extreme concern, however, is the reaction of the religious of the United States- some view the Angels as enemies of God to be exterminated, some view them as literal angels- messengers of God to be allowed to rampage freely, and some view them as alien life forms.”

(1/2)
>>
“All view points are concerning- the concern stems from the religious writing their UN, Congressional, and Senatorial representatives expressing concern over recent developments in Nevada, including the killing of a US national by [REDACTED], an agent of Section Two sent to ensure the safety of [REDACTED] and [REDACTED].” You're the one that filed the original fucking report and they give you the redacted intelligence version?

The incompetence astounds you. Sighing, you skim through the rest of the report- basically the US doesn't know what to do regarding NERV, so their politicians are feeding everyone a load of horseshit. Par for the course, you decide. Lighting another cigarette, you ponder the remaining three intelligence files.

The UN, the Russians, the Chinese. What to look at, what to look at... That's when an Agent you don't know, eyes shielded by sunglasses, steps inside your cubicle and takes the seat across from your desk.

“Special Agent,” he greets. “I've been sent by our mutual friends to make sure you're doing okay.”

Carefully, you quietly open the drawer to your desk, where another CZ-85 waits, along with three spare magazines. Silently, you pick it up and flip the safety off. Aiming it beneath your desk, you smile at the man.

“Which friends? I've got lots of friends, y'know.”

“I know,” he says. “These friends are in Vauxhall Cross.” That's when you place his slight accent- it's definitely middle class Wales. Leaning back in your seat, your slowly replace the pistol in the drawer.

“And what can Vauxhall Cross be wanting with me?”

“You're uniquely placed to protect a national interest,” he tells you slowly as well. “We understand your obligations to NERV are, right now, greater than your obligations to the United Kingdom. The King himself has expressed a desire to see the national interest you're protecting safe at all costs, and has intimated you might be pardoned for what they drummed you out for.”

Ah. The carrot, first, then. What's the stick to be, you wonder? “Or,” he says just as quietly, “we can be convinced to bring you back home. The realm needs men like you, Cryan. The Wars hurt us, badly, and we've recovered, and we're an Empire again, but there are still threats out there, threats that need men like yourself to take care of them.” Oho. It's TWO carrots. For some reason, you feel strangely pleased.

“I need time to think about it,” you tell him. “But rest assured I shall continue to protect the national interest with as much vigor as I possess.”

“There is no time, Cryan. I need your answer, now.” Ah. What game could be afoot that requires MI6 to need another gun in country and in place already?

“Ave Caeser.” He looks at you like you're speaking Latin, which you are.

“What?”

“Please exit my cubicle,” you tell the Welshman quietly. “I am trying to work.” He makes a face at you.

“I understand,” he says. “However, if you had read the Russian report on your desk first, you'd know that there are still several dozen nuclear weapons unaccounted for from between the fall of the Soviet Union and the invention of N2 weapons.”

“Bugger,” you say. “Best of luck, though. If this harms the Children, I will be finding you, and I will be introducing you to my friends, Left and Right Fist.”

“Quite,” he agrees. “Best of luck, Special Agent. And remember- if you ever want to go home, you can call the Consulate and tell them Agent Blue had a talk with you.”

“I'll remember that,” you tell him as you shut the drawer in your desk. He stands and leaves, and you lean back in the chair. Nuclear devices wouldn't require MI6 contacting you in person with their man in NERV. It's got to be something bigger than that. You don't think you'll blow his cover, and you'll help if he desperately needs it, but he's a big boy. He should be able to operate entirely on his own.

You light up your third cigarette of the morning, and spin the chair around, to face the wall of your cubicle. “Got to be more to the game than just nukes,” you tell yourself. “Got to be.” On a whim, you check the Russian report in your inbox on the desk- it's entirely speculation regarding why the Russians would have a thirteen year old looking twenty-four year old dressed as a secretary and in their Embassy in Tokyo-2, and why they could possibly want an Evangelion.

(1/2)
>>
Damnation and bugger, you think. Someone is keeping the nations of the world at the Great Game, at each other's throats. There hasn't been a new Permanent Security Council of the UN member since Germany and Japan were both granted the status in 2002. China and Russia have been sniping at each other about border incidents for months now, you recall. Why would Russia start a mess with the UK and US over Japan? Why would Russia need an Evangelion unit? Their stockpile of N2 weapons is half as large as the United States is, and they had to run their economy into the ground to build them.

You need a fucking drink, you think. But goddamn if this isn't interesting thought-food.

The Russians want an Evangelion, citing national defense issues. The Chinese want one, citing national defense issues. The Germans, Japanese, and Brits and Americans have one, each. Well, in Japan's case, they have two, but one is the prototype which has been pressed into service. Four active Evangelions. You know that facilities in China, still 'communist', and Russia, produced at least some of the equipment needed for them, with other places around the world, like Brazil, France, and South Africa doing the same.

The possibility for proliferation exists- but what country truly had the budget for it? Not Russia, with their heavy investment into N2 weaponry. Brazil was still struggling with internal difficulties, with France and South Africa not having the income to be able to build an entire Evangelion. China could be doing it, but that would require they break about four different treaties and be hiding the facilities from UN inspectors-

The only logical conclusion, you realize, is that someone or several someones, are directing things, forcing the powers to play the Great Game and so be blinded by the 'big' issues they don't realize something is going on. And hadn't Lily told you that Third Impact had been orchestrated by man? But man is flawed, you know this, you're one of the most flawed men out there, and man's works are flawed, inherently, by being shaped by the hands of flawed men. So Third Impact was flawed when it kicked off that very first time- and you were caught in the middle.

It's fait accompli that shit's fucked up. The new scar under your eye, the headache this morning, Second Impact- shit's fucked up. Things went tits up, as it were, when Second Impact happened. So. You take your cell phone and dial one of two men you can trust to always have your back. The first is Tricky Dicky.

“It's you,” he says flatly, obviously unenthused to be hearing from you.

“Yes, it's me,” you respond quickly. “Listen, I need a favor, since you didn't fucking follow through with the bottle of booze for Katsuragi.”

“Pay your fucking tab, you cunt, and then we'll talk about favors to get you into a girl's panties.”

“That wasn't a favor for that, you dirty fucker. The fate of the world might rest on this shit.”

“Sure, sure. I'll listen.”

“Good. I need you to keep an ear open for anything to do with a secret organization that isn't a national- so nothing about the KGB, that kind of thing- this needs to be about shit like the Illuminati or whatever.”

“Sure,” he says again. “Anyway, how'd the girl take it next time she saw you?”

“She was pretty pissed at me, you fuckin' wanker. I'll remember this.”

“Maybe if you'd pay your fu-” you hang up on him. Cunt. That's about all you can do about the secret group running the world (if there really is such a thing,) a small voice in the back of your mind chimes in doubtfully. Ignoring it, you stand. Then you promptly sit back down and type up an email to Commander Ikari. The phrasing puzzles you for a moment, before you seize upon what you think will ensure success.

You can go pick up the Kids, you think. Be there by the time class lets out. Maybe have time to get to the house and cook something, prove you can cook. It's still awkward, trying to figure out how to live with three teenagers, eight other men, and an adult woman that's as drop-dead gorgeous as she is. You've managed it, and managed to not cut your own throat shaving yet, too.

You'll be able to cook and drink, you think. As soon as everyone's eating you can retreat to the bedroom you've taken over as an office space/library and go to sleep on the floor. But you should pay your tab at Dick's place, too. You can write him a check. You get paid day after tomorrow. If you put the check in the mail today, he'll get it three days from now. Yeah, that'll work. God, you wish you could just drink for free, but that stopped when you set the place on fire.

You leave the office and head for the motor pool, where the Aston Martin awaits. But the kids are growing. Maybe you should get one of NERV's black SUVs? You shake your head abruptly. God, what are you doing? Thinking about getting a vehicle that's bigger and not as fast or smooth as your Aston Martin simply because you're driving /children/ to and from school? Next thing you know you'll be enrolling them all in football.

“God save Ireland,” you say quietly as you slip into the car. “I'm being domesticated. What a horrible thought.” But is that so bad? You are twenty-eight. Might be time to think about finding a woman, settling down. Buy a farm, even.

Then you burst out laughing. “That'll be the fucking day,” you say. “Me, Declan Cryan, farming and with a wife and kids. That ain't for me,” you tell the empty air beside you.

“No, dearie, it's not. It never was.” You look to your side and see Lily, sitting next to you. Jerking your eyes back to the road, you cross yourself.

(1/2)
>>
“This is new,” you say to her.

“Yes, it is. You've stumbled upon a truth that's important. I can't stay out here for long, and it hurts, but you need to know you're on the right track.”

“What, cooking dinner for the Children?”

“No- well, yes, that will help them adjust to having you around and not killing people,” she admits. “But the track from earlier- what train was the Welshman discussing?”

“The Great Game? Although really that hasn't been relevant since the Great War, back in 1914-”

“Declan, honey,” she interrupts you. “You're getting side-tracked.”

You decide to try again. “There's some rich old bastard running everything?”

“Rich old bastards,” she corrects. “But yes. Don't bother trying to go after them, though. They have too many resources to throw against you and I'd rather you not die again.”

“I'd rather that, too, thanks. So what do you suggest?”

“You're doing well, this time. You're not crippled or dead in a gutter, which was more common than you might beli-” You look to the side again as soon as she's cut off, and she's gone as suddenly as she was there.

“Well fuck,” you tell the empty car, as you pull up to Tokyo-3 Middle. You motor into a parking slot and unfold yourself from the car. There's an exodus of students heading for transportation home, and heading home, when you suddenly find yourself being assaulted- well, assaulted isn't really the word, more like aggressively hugged, by a fourteen year old boy.

Patting him on the head, you ease Shinji back.

“What's the matter, sport?”

“I got locked in a closet during lunch,” he sniffles into your shirt, “and Asuka just laughed when she found me and didn't let me out.” Yeah, you think. To a fourteen year old, that's probably a big issue.

(2/3)
>>
“Come along, then,” you tell him. “We'll find out who locked you in the closet, and then I'll find them and lock 'em in a cell with a friend of mine. As for the Asuka issue, I'll talk to her later, okay?”

We must enact proper vengeance by teaching Shinji to do the same to his attackers.
>>
Need to teach Shinji how to smack a bitch. Christ.

Also, Lilith's apparent reason for helping us thus far. Since she already has us for good once this is all over, assuming she's not destroyed, is it just because she genuinely doesn't want us to keep dying?

Man Asuka is a cunt. She needs a facial of paintballs.
>>
>>34077532
I assumed it was that she wanted us faster, since if we win its over we are hers as apposed to waiting until she can't throw us back anymore

Mari fapfic when?
>>
>>34077906
Yes I know. We really laid some groundwork for things to happen next couple of threads, though. So don't be to disappointed.
>>
>>34077925
Please write that Mari smut scene
I'd even pay you
>>
>>34077953
How much are we talking, here?
>>
>>34078012
Like Its 6AM, I'll talk to you on IRC tomorrow
>>
>>34077923
Never.
>>
>>34078101
Please no.
>>
>>34077437
Huh. Asuka really doesn't seem the type to actually leave Shinji in the locker and not let him out.
>>
>>34077532
Maybe she wants to prevent nukes going off because they destroy the soul?
Or was that Planetary?
>>
>>34078240
Do you know Asuka?
>>
>>34082101
Not him but, from what I remember, I figure she'd laugh at him, mock him a bit, and then let him out making sure to mention something about the 'Invincible Shinji' needing to be rescued from a closet.
>>
>>34083962
In this continuity she probably feels threatened since Shinji is actually becoming competent.
>>
>>34084621
Like......she did in the original?
>>
>>34083962
Yeah, she's never been this outright terrible before.
>>
>>34086284
Asukafags butt blasted that their bitch is revealed to be a bitch
>>
>>34086361
But I like Misato more. I'm just sayin' it's kinda outta character for her. Though you're probably just joking.
