Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you forcefully inserted yourself into another's conversation, betrayed a spirit, told a friend to stop being weird, fed your captors, and found a witch.

“We've come to apprehend you, Witch!” You declare boldly, spear planted firmly in the ground before you. The witch replies nonplussed. “My name is Mortia, not witch, and on what grounds do you apprehend me? As far as I was aware the City's reach barely stretched beyond their own walls. Not even that far, in certain areas.” The commander of your guard replies before you have a chance to. “Watch your tongue, Witch-” She cuts him off. “I thought we'd gone over this. Mortia. My name is Mortia. It marks me as the descendant of a god and I'll not have you discard it in favor of some meaningless label you pinned upon me.” The guard sneers. “There is only one god and you're no child of his, I can tell you that.”

You decide to step in before this turns into some sort of theological debate. “I do not care who or what you worship, nor do I care whether or not one of your ancestors screwed a divine being. I ask that you come peacefully so we might avoid unnecessary bloodshed.” She strokes her pointed chin absentmindedly, humming in a carefree sort of why while she thinks. It's an awfully casual attitude to have towards an impending battle, but you suppose she knows as well as you do that all of this is fake.

While she considers your words, you channel water magic into your armor to activate your magic sight. The world seems to melt away, leaving only bright points of light residing in an empty void surrounded by a impassable barrier of magic. Your companions, their armor, and their weapons all for the most part glow brightly. The broad blade of Darzi's spear glows particularly bright, tendrils of energy writhing through the air around it. Curious. Chrys seems to have expanded her magical reserves since last you saw her through the haze of your magic sight, as has Profectus. Fulvia appears dimmer than usual but that's likely due to the fact she just expended a large amount of vys to drag you into her Core.

The Witch is the only one of the natives that seems to have any magical power at all, and most of it seems to stem from artifacts. A long object is tucked into her pant leg, the hilt extending just past her hip. You hadn't noticed it at first, but you think it's a sword of some sort. The slim necklace around her neck glows brightly, though you can't divine its purpose. Perhaps most concerning of all is the slim glowing outline obscuring her face. Likely the mask you saw when you tapped into that strange connection, though in the real world she doesn't seem to be wearing a mask at all. She has other enchanted items on her person but you can't seem to identify them, a handful of small beads, a small box tucked into her sleeve, and a few others. None of them seem particularly powerful. There are far more artifacts, powerful ones too, residing in her hut, which stretches far deeper into the ground than you would've guessed. In fact it seems to be at least three times larger underground than it is above.

Your focus is broken when Mortia speaks, and your vision returns once more to normal. “You know what? I believe I will go with you after all. I wouldn't mind getting a peak at what you've hidden in that tower of yours~” Her voice is airy and light, almost lyrical really. The commander of your guard folds his arms in front of his chest. “And why do you think you'll see anything but a cold, grey cell?” When she grins, her face seems to split unnaturally. “Why, I'm the only one who knows how to operate that little doorway of yours! I've got the key inside, after all~”

(2/3 or 4, I lied.)
>>
Fluttering her eyelashes at the commander seemed entirely unnecessary, more of a mocking gesture than a flirtatious one given the circumstances. The commander scowls and gestures to two of his soldiers, then to the hut. Without a word they jog towards it. The wolf curled up by Mortia's feet cracks an eye open briefly to wash them pass but closes it again promptly, apparently deciding they're not worth his trouble. They slip beyond the doorway of the hut and after a few minutes the commander nods, though the soldiers still haven't emerged. He presses that button on his collar and speaks. “You'll come with us, Witch. A transport will be sent later to confiscate your things. Consider this a mercy.” She rolls her eyes in a rather elaborate fashion but complies nonetheless. The raven takes flight as soon as she steps forward, vanishing as soon as it passes beyond the magic bubble that seems to conceal her home. The wolf simply rolls onto its back, unconcerned that its presumed master is leaving it behind.

Mortia surrenders her hands to you, pointedly ignoring the commander even as he jerks her hands behind her back and seals the strange manacles they use here around her wrist. You hear her whisper in your ear, despite the fact she's standing directly in front of you and her lips do not move. “You better not be misleading me, elf. I can be rather spiteful towards those who betray me.” Nobody else seems to have noticed, even though to you the words sounded clear and distinct. A curious trick, that. You'll need to find out how she did it.

Four hours late, but all is forgiven.

As you exit the dome her abode is hidden beneath the swamp fades back into sharp focus. You hadn't noticed it at the time, but the world beyond her hut seemed hazy and indistinct. Something to look out for in the future, certainly. You fall into a steady pace at the back of the column of guards, Skull Kid walking just behind you. He taps you gently on the shoulder and leans forward, asking quietly. “Mik, are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, if she is a witch... stabbing her in the back here and now would save us a lot of trouble and spare a lot of innocent lives.”

>Tell him you've come to an arrangement, it will all work out.
>Ask him why witches are so feared in the first place, she doesn't seem all too dangerous.

Yeah well, healing takes a shit-ton of vys. Did you forget about how hard it was and how much it cost when we just began even with Journeyman Water? Plus, our companions are primarily specced for using Vys to augment assault and DPS at this point. Darzi is much better choice as healer since she has our memories as well as our training, if not our reserves, and no particular use for her Vys pool.
>>
>>34048514
I am surprised no one thhought to do this?
Can't we ran sack her home? Take all her goodies before the soldiers get to it.

I see your point that Darzi is a more effective healer than the others right now, and I'm not advocating that everyone focus on learning water magic until ther're GM in it, just that they at least hit novice in it while we are at the Water temple. Not to mention group meditating on water magic wwill help us further our own.

What leverage do we have? We're a prisoner Anon.

“Lets just say I have a good feeling about her. You've no need to worry.” You cock your head to the side, a thought occurring to you. “Why are witches so feared in the first place? She did not seem particularly powerful, magically speaking that is.” A voice calls out from further up, Mortia's. “I heard that!” You smirk, raising your voice to insure that she hears the rest of what you say as well. “In fact, I'm quite certain that if it came to a duel I could crush her without so much as breaking a sweat.” She calls back more fervently this time. “You want to take this outside? I'll fight you right now, swear on my mother's grave!” You pointedly continue to ignore her. “So why be afraid of her when you've treated me and my companions with such kindness?”

Skull Kid shoves his hands into his pockets, shrugging his shoulders. “Man, I don't know. It's an ingrained thing. I was brought up real religious and all the children's stories are about brave warriors hunting down witches and defeating them in honorable combat to retrieve whatever it is they've stolen. A kid, or a valuable item of some sort. Plus, I mean. You should hear the sort of stuff they're supposed to be capable of. Back in the olden days it was said witch covens would seize control of vast swathes of territory, forcing the peasantry to participate in whatever cruel experiments they conceived. Turning them into twisted animal monsters, infusing them with magic and causing them to mutate. Only the Church's rise in power stopped them.”

(1/?)
>>
>>34049701
We're Master. I doubt we'd be able to learn shit from novice level Water Vatis.
>>
hopefully we'll have a few days to unwind once we leave Namek and the mines, we'll have enough time to get them at least a basic understanding of water magic so they can heal minor wounds.
>>
Mortia calls from up ahead. “Lies and slander! The Church merely uses those stories to cover up the genocide they waged against my people!” Skull Kid shouts back. “Be that as it may, lady, living in an invisible hut in the middle of a swamp filled with horrible mutants doesn't exactly scream 'good guy', does it?” You cut in before the argument can escalate any further. “That's all well and good, but is there any actual mention of their capabilities?” Skull Kid shakes his head slowly. “Not really, it would depend on whatever Magi they swore themselves to. Some could bend the hearts of men to do their bidding, others kill with a touch.” He shrugs. He does that a lot, come to think of it. “I don't know man, it was never really my area of interest and I had a falling out with the Church years ago.”

The rest of the walk passes mostly in silence. Those ominous whispers and rustles in the bushes are markedly absent. There even seems to be more sun shining down through the forest canopy, giving the forest floor a pleasing sun-dappled appearance. The walk out certainly proves to be a much more pleasant experience at the very least, though what you find as you approach the armored transport spoils your good mood somewhat.

>>34049785
wrong. We're the key to their years of research.
>>
Namely, the road is blocked off by a stack of three felled trees and a handful of disfigured corpses lay strewn atop the makeshift barricade. The forest to either side of the road is much to thick to be navigated by the bulky armored vehicle, so for all intents and purposes you're trapped here unless either the guards can drag the trees away, you can clear the trees using a touch of magic, or the driver knows a detour. Mortia laments with obviously fake panic. “Oooh no~ What's happened here? Looks like you'll have to take a detour... Unless, of course, you uncuff me. I could have this barricade removed in an instant.”

>Stay out of it, she seems to have some sort of plan in place.
>Mention that you could probably clear the barricade just as easily, using either manipulate or water magic. Fulvia could likely do it too, using Earth magic.
>Recommend that they try to find a detour. The road you've been driving on is paved, surely it will connect to another road at some point and you can use that to find your way back.

Not saying she has forgiven us but a chance to speak counts for something compared to her not hearing us out at all.
"I'll listen" vs "Fuck off" means quite a bit

We spent minor chump change even compared to our poorest moments. For the oud I'd hate to have it break but wouldn't lose two vys that may be the difference between losing an ally or keeping one.

You decide to stay out of it, though you do reach into your cloak and pull out that oud you bought so long ago in Khmedi. Chrys raises an eyebrow curiously, as does Profectus. The latter ask with a hint of suspicion. “You can play? Why haven't you ever used that damn thing to alleviate some of the boredom on long trips?” You smirk, replying confidently. “Because I can't play, of course!” This seems to confuse Profectus further, though he doesn't ask any further questions. You pluck a few of the strings absentmindedly and twist a handful of weird knobs at the top of the instrument's neck. You're not actually sure what they do, but you've seen other musicians do this so you figure it's some ritual of some sort.

The guard commander glances at you, then does a double take. He glares at the instrument in your hands for a few moments before deciding to pointedly ignore whatever you're doing. Instead he turns to Mortia. “How do we know you're not going to run off as soon as I remove those cuffs, witch?” She smiles beatifically. “Why would I run off after surrendering peacefully? That would just be silly! Now come on, we both know you're going to remove these cuffs.” He hmphs, but eventually does withdraw a key from a compartment on his armor and turn Mortia around to remove the manacles, or 'cuffs' as they seem to call them here, from her wrist.

(1/?)
>>
She pauses to rub her wrist and then takes a few steps towards the barricade, eyeing it for a moment. You switch to your magic sight just to better time what you plan on doing. Vys begins to pool in her abdomen, slowly at first. She begins to wave her arms around in the air in an entirely unnecessary manner. You start to play what you hope is a low, ominous tune but it comes out... wrong. You move your fingers across the strings on the neck like you've seen musicians do in the past and pluck a few of the strings, but a hellish cacophony rings out when you'd really only intended to provide background music. Mortia curses and cast her spell prematurely, a burst of vys emitting from her body and sending one of the trees flying off into the woods until it slams into the trunk of another, causing it to topple over.

She whips around to shoot you a glare, and you smile apologetically. You fiddle with those knobs a little more while she gathers more vys to try again. This time when she begins to cast you just start plucking away at the strings at random without any sort of grace. You figure if you don't try to manipulate the sound, it won't be awful! Unfortunately you were wrong. If anything, it sounds worse this time. Louder. A flock of birds takes flight a short distance away. The commander winces. Mortia miscast once again and uproots an entire stand of trees. Fortunately when she releases her hold on them they collapse away from the road rather than onto it.

(2/3)
>>
She whips around once again. “I swear to the Gods themselves, new and old, that if you don't stop playing that accursed instrument I'll cut its strings and sodomize you with the neck!” She's red in the face by the time she finishes her little tirade. Profectus whistles lowly before commenting. “Damn, you usually have to pay for that sort of service.” She cast him a disgusted look before turning back to the two trees still blocking the road and waving her hand unceremoniously. The trees are swept aside, crashing into the trunks of the trees encroaching on the road. The blockage isn't completely cleared but it's good enough, the driver can navigate around.

You tuck the oud back into your cloak. Well, that didn't go as planned but it had other, more amusing results. You were going to just sort of drift around in the background making funny faces and playing ominous music to lighten the mood. Instead you made the witch embarrass herself twice, well, embarrass herself to you and your companions at least. That was probably still quite impressive by the soldier's standards.

(3/4, I lied.)

You all pile into the back of the transport, finding Rodge and... you think the other soldier's name was Eli waiting for you. Rodge has a tourniquet and a bandage on his leg, and the bleeding seems to have mostly stopped. Still, he'll need to either replace that foot with a prosthetic or retire from the guard. You feel a little bad, because you know you could help. You end up seated opposite the witch in the very middle of the transport, and as the vehicle jerks into motion that oppressive silence descends on the compartment once again. Mainly because Mortia is sitting with her arms crossed quietly fuming. You'd made so much progress too...

You know, this Magic Mik and the gang/band roving group got me thinking it could kind of work.
Have Mik play some song that there's no better place for you than your country, while he's got banished of his own would be kind of bittersweet and would certainly fit well with all the Aghtaki that aren't asshole.
With Prof and to a certain extent Chryssa too since they don't have a country anymore.

Hmmm, Mik got banished from his country never to return(for now?).
Chryssa can't go back to her town or she'd get executed(or banished).
Prof Fulvia and Mortia's coutry doesn't exist anymore.
SK if he comes with us might never return to his world.

That'd leave us with Darzi as the only party member with a country to call home. It might fit.

You let the silence stretch a little longer, and then as abruptly as possible blurt out. “So why do you know the price of being sodomized with a musical instrument? That not only seems oddly specific but incredibly unpleasant.” Profectus responds without missing a beat. “Look, Mik. You do some weird things in the army. I mean... sometimes you get a few drinks in you, someone pitches an idea that just seems fantastic at the time. Then the next thing you know you're bent over table-” Chrys interrupts tersely. “Could we not talk about this, please?” Profectus pokes her in the ribs teasingly. “Making you a little curious, eh? That your thing? Musical sodomy?” Chrys narrows her eyes, and the next thing you know she has Profectus in a head lock. Seriously, you're not even sure you saw her hands move.

While he's busy crying out for mercy you turn to the rest of the compartment, most of whom are looking on either amused, scared, or confused. “So! What did everyone think of my performance? I'd be happy to give an encore for anyone interested.” Your hand is already reaching into your cloak. One of the guards raises his hands desperately, waving them back and forth. He has his helmet up, so you can't hear anything he's presumably saying. Mortia snaps angrily. “If you pull it out I'll break it.” You frown, but she continues to ignore you. Moody lady, isn't she?

Chrys has released Profectus from her headlock, though he's still grinning like an idiot. You turn your attention to Darzi. “Well since I can't play my chosen instrument to pass the time, how about we perform miracles instead? You know some healing magic, right?” Darzi quirks an eyebrow, nodding her head. “Yes, learned from you. What of it?” You nod towards Rodge, who's passed out either from blood loss, shock, or pain. “There is a method I learned from a journal, it involves two or more Vatis lending their power to the same task. I'd like to heal this young man's leg and I'd like you to help.” She looks from you to Rodge, wary. “Very well, but I do not think I'll be much help. Regrowing limbs is usually the realm of Grandmasters. I could hardly be more than a novice.” You wave her off. “I will shoulder most of the burden, simply slip into a meditative trance and begin channeling water magic into his leg when you see me doing the same. Focus on what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, I hope you'll learn something.”

You fold your legs beneath you and center yourself, slipping into your meditative trance easily. The world fades away, save for Mortia and your companions of course. It turns out to be intensely difficult to figure out which one of the vaguely defined silhouettes is Rodge but eventually you manage. You gather your vys in your core, preparing the spell. This will be the first time you've actually attempted to heal damage this extensive...

>ROOLL 3d10+14 vs DC 35! You get a +10 bonus due to your method of meditation, +2 from previous unsuccessful attempts, and +2 from Darzi's aid!

Don't rattle me bones!
>>
You slowly channel vys into the man's injured leg, careful to avoid over-exerting yourself. You tear power away from the drifting motes of vys high above and use it to replenish your reserves as you go. Gradually, the man's leg begins to emerge from the shredded ribbons of flesh that remain below his knee. At first you find yourself trying to sculpt the man a new leg in the shape of what you think his leg ought to look like, but then something seems to click. It comes much easier than it had been before, but you can't really pick out what you're doing differently.

Slowly the ribbons that remain of his leg are consolidated into the upper half of his calf. It takes a lot of effort to regrow the bone, but you manage it at length. You slip deeper into your trance as you work, doing your best to spawn the various bones that make up the foot and lashing them together with tendons and cartilage. Then comes the blood vessels and the nervous system. Finally a layer of muscle spreads down from what remnants remain, followed by a thin layer of fat. It occurs to you suddenly that you're not actually constructing his leg as you would think his leg needs to be constructed, but just providing the energy his body needs to repair the damage. The body knows how it ought to look and function. You're simply going with the flow.

Finally skin stretches itself over the fresh layer of muscle and fat. It is red and raw, but with time the wound shouldn't even leave a scar, and if it does it won't leave a particular large scar. You put in a few finishing touches, repairing some minor fractures in the bone that hadn't been torn off, shoring up a few weaknesses you accidentally left behind, but by and large you're proud of your work. You even feel more energized than when you set off on your task.
>Vys Pool: 30/30
>Congratulations! You gained an Insight towards Grandmaster!

Your eyes snap open, and you find the entire compartment staring at you. Mortia's mouth is actually hanging slightly open. Chrys looks vaguely impressed, high praise from her. Profectus whistles in a low tone, while Fulvia merely nods her head in approval. You can't see Skull Kid's face, but he's on the edge of his seat. Darzi, like you, has only just awoken from her trance and is taking in the crowd of watchers. Rodge is still blissfully asleep, unaware of the favor he now owes you.

Perhaps more pressing than the men and women in the compartment is the crowd gathered outside the vehicle's hatch. It seems you've returned to the hanger, and there must be several dozen people jostling to catch a glimpse of what you've done. This... may or may not be a good thing. You've probably just outed yourself as a magic user, though it's not like that's too big a deal at this point...

Atleast we know she has never seen anything like that. And in all likelihood sucks if she even is a water vatis.
which is good. And thinking of the future alone. she spent atleast two casts trying to move the logs because of us. so she has less vys.

honeslty even when people wanted to kill her.
I was thinking it'd be cool to have her as a sleeper agent. Gaining power doing shit for the military* calling for our help* or just politics. So we have a friend with power. + We will have no scar.
Should be pretty good for us.

Guess it would, but I think we may say that we're acting that way because the time for going home is near IC. And we got an insight bringing us closer to grandmaster, that's a thing gone right for once in this shithole of a world.
>>
>>34052819
Wow Anon, you have all the answers. Why are we even voting? It'd be easier if Soma just wrote what you say. Better yet, you should run this quest

well she won't be lying. SO she can hope to her people trust her. Of course this is if she wants to go back.
anyway. we still need our last insight into grand master healing I think that'll be it. so we may leave a few "marks" but get rid of the obvious signs/ focusing on certain parts she wants hidden.

+ Thinking about it hoesntly when we get back to the lake I really want to grand master manipulate more ice soldiers and create another small war underwater and possibly kill the thing in the water.

Son, you're gonna get throttled.
>>
You stand up, bowing low to Darzi. “Thank you, Darzi. I couldn't of done it without your help.” As you straighten, you transmit to her privately via the brooches. {When we return home I intend to heal your scars. The procedure will be painful, as the scar tissue will need to be removed first, but I believe by our combined efforts any outward signs of the torment you suffered through could be erased.} There is a pause before she answers, her eyes studying your face as if looking for any sign of deception. When she does eventually respond it almost seems like she doesn't want to get her hopes up. {I would owe you... I would owe you more than you can imagine. You've already saved my life, twice over. Healed my wounds to begin with...} She trails off, but breaks the growing silence by clearing her throat, standing, and returning your bow. “It was nothing, the least I could do for a brave soldier who was injured defending us.”

You whip around, all eyes seem to be focused on you. Frankly, it makes you uncomfortable. Granted most of them look to be in awe, but knowing how these people fear magic you wouldn't be surprised if they turned into an angry mob out for your blood in the blink of an eye, even if you were helping someone. You take a step forward, towards the crowd, and then reach down to grab Chrys under the arm and pull her up in front of you. You grab onto her shoulders to steady her, while she protest via the brooches. {What are you doing? Why are you grabbing me? Let go! Don't think I won't hit you!} You cut her off abruptly mid-rant. {Stand in front of me, I don't trust this crowd and if they slip into a murderous rage I want you between me and certain death.} Shouting in the back of your head ceases, and after a short pause Chrys responds. {Fine, but I'm still going to hit you for this later. You could of just asked, or at least given me a warning before you jerked me out of my seat to be your human shield.}
>>
>>34053322
Samjan don't resemble elves at all you retard.
>>
You keep her between you and the crowd, arm draped around her shoulders in what you hope the crowd will mistake for affection, and not an attempt to hide a growing sense of panic and paranoia. On second thought, why would you want to show that you're affectionate towards this woman when you're afraid they're going to lynch you? That would probably just make them more inclined to lynch her as well. This was poorly thought out. This entire situation was poorly thought out. As panic takes hold you do the first thing that comes to mind and wave to the crowd. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now they're muttering amongst themselves. Maybe waving is some kind of offensive gesture to these people-

You're increasingly scatterbrained internal monologue is interrupted when one of the crowd steps forward. She's an older woman, sturdily built, and covered in black stains of a substance you don't recognize. “How... how did you do that? Because... my husband's been sick lately. The doctor's say it's cancer...”

>Crap, this isn't good. You really can't get roped into healing the sick and mending the wounded. You're not some savior. Try to disengage. Tell her your time on this world is short and you must return to your home soon!

>>34053372
Cancer, at the moment, is beyond you. Lost limbs you would need to remove the stubs that have healed over in their place to regrow the limb. A tumor would need to be cut out completely for you to properly regrow the cells, and if you didn't completely remove the tumor the cancer would return. Illness you can pretty much handle.

Guys, lets look at this calmly and logically.

>If we agree, we'll need modern medical technology to actually remove the tumor safely, so we'll need to convince a doctor to work pro-bono. Given what Soma said here: >>34053704 I doubt that will be easy.

>If we agree, and succeed, we'll not only have regrown a man's limb but also cured cancer and done a shit ton of other stuff for other people. We'll probably become some kind of savior or prophet, which will piss off the High Admiral. He might think we're preparing to move against him, which could lose us access to the portal.

>If we agree, and fail, we would've just killed this woman's husband. We'll be thought of as a fraud, a sham, or at best as incompetent. The crowd currently in awe of us will quickly come to hate us.

>If we decline, we'll engender the anger of the crowd. Possibly to a violent degree. However, at present we're surrounded by presumably highly trained guards and we just regrew their comrades leg. They're endeared towards us.

Honestly don't think we should do it.

That... that doesn't even look edited in.
>>
You open your mouth to speak, but indecision rages in your head. You don't want to stay any longer than you have to, but to leave so many to suffer or die when you might be able to help... you can't bring yourself to actually say no to these people. An idea occurs to you, a way out that excuses you from responsibility. You turn to the commander of your guard and find when you finally force the words out of your mouth your voice sounds haggard and weary. “Tell them the High Admirals orders.”

He scowls with unexpected ferocity as what you're asking him to do sinks in, but he stands nonetheless. He and your contingent of guards stride out, pushing the crowd back forcefully. The commander's voice booms out over the growing mutters of discontent and surprised yelling. “The High Admiral has commanded the elf be contained. He is a convict, arrested on counts of associating with political dissidents and infiltrating the city illegally. For your own good, I order you to disperse.” You feel a hand pressing on your back as you're escorted quickly forward, a gun-toting armored guard flanking you and Chrys on either side. Two more bring up the rear, herding along the rest of your party towards the nearest lift.
(1/2)
>>
Some of the crowd disperses as the guards start to shove their way through, forming a corridor for you to pass through. Others grow more insistent. You hear a man demanding a reason, asking why you're not being forced to heal those who need it most. Another voice begs between sobs just to please heal her son, he's been bedridden for weeks. You keep your eyes firmly on the ground in front of you, even as the guards shove you forcefully into the lift, one of them slamming a button labeled 'HAO', and take up position in front of it to prevent any of the crowd from getting on with you. As the doors slide closed, you see the flash of metal and hear glass breaking. You look up to see someone in the crowd wielding a wrench and using it to great effect on one of your guard's helmets. The last thing you hear before the lift jolts into motion is the sound of a gunshot.

Skull Kid breaks the growing silence as the lift slides ever upwards. “I told you, man. I warned you. Don't use magic unless it's an emergency.” He sighs, wearily. “You either end up feared, hunted, or you end up in situations like that. You're forced to disappoint someone and shit spirals out of control... do you know what happens if that turns into a riot, Mik? It means everyone involved is arrested and probably locked away for the rest of their natural born lives.” He doesn't even necessarily sound angry, just disappointed.

The lift grinds to a halt and the doors slide open. You find yourself standing in the familiar foyer in front of the High Admiral's office. Two guards stand passively on either side, they don't pay you any mind. At the very least the panic has allowed you to escape with skull kid, and you could probably remove that collar with a touch of Earth magic...

You make your way confidently towards the doorway up to the lab. It slides open as you approach, a relief. You weren't really looking forward to asking the guards politely to open the door for you. Especially considering you're trying to sneak a convict and a witch up there so you can finally escape this shithole. As soon as the doors close, you reach out towards Fulvia via the brooches. {Do you think you can get Skull Kid's collar off?} She doesn't respond, but rather there is a burst of vys and then the weighty metal collar falls to the floor. Skull Kid reaches up to his neck, and then one of the lenses in his helmet zooms in towards the collar on the floor. “Impressive.” Is all he has to say about the matter.

“Mortia, do you have what you need or will we have to wait for the rest of those artifacts you had in your home to get here?” She looks taken aback. “How did-nevermind. Those were either useless or too large to move, I have all of my important heirlooms with me.” You nod, and a moment later reach the top of the stairwell. You expect to be met with a contingent of guards there to wipe all of you out or imprison you, but instead as you step into the lab foyer you find it abandoned. Everything is more or less as you left it. Darzi, who had the presence of mind to grab your egg off of the trolley on the transport before fleeing through the crowd, carries it over to one of the cots and sets it down. You turn your attention to Skull Kid.

(1/2)
>>
“We're escaping tonight. Mortia can control the portal and the gatekeeper that resides inside. You may come with us, if you wish.” You pause, thinking about how to phrase what you need to say next. “I'm not going to lie, it's dangerous. You're not of Rhynian ancestry as far as I know and you're heavily modded. The portal will strip you of any material goods that originated in this world, so essentially all of them. It would probably kill you if you stepped through unprotected. Fortunately, there is a solution. If you can tolerate being trapped in an airless void for an indeterminate amount of time with a monstrosity from another dimension that may attempt to eat you, my cloak ought to be able to transport you safely through the portal.”

Skull Kid shoves his hands into his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels briefly before responding. “So, my options are to leave behind everything I've ever known, everyone I've ever known, and the only home I've ever had for a land where I'll almost certainly be ostracized and magic like yours is common.” He holds up a finger. “Or, rot in a prison cell for the rest of my life, or at least until the Admiral has a guard shoot me in the dead of night to finally put an end to the trouble I've caused him.” Skull Kid sighs wearily. “God... damn I've made some shitty life decisions. I mean, is there any chance I might be able to learn the sort of magic you do?”

You're not going to outright lie to him and tell him that yes, he'll absolutely be able to learn magic with hard work and determination. If he comes with you to your own world, he probably won't be coming back. You want to make sure he makes the right choice. “I'm going to be honest with you, you're about as completely magically inert as they come. A lot of vatis probably won't even consider you alive, let alone sentient. However, there is a slim chance that the magically rich environment might alter you. A very, very slim chance, granted. There are also enchanted artifacts to be found, items imbued with magical power.”

Skull Kid reaches up to rub his temples but seems to realize halfway that they're hidden behind the thick metal casing that supports his helmet. He seems fidgety, nervous. You can't recall ever seeing him like this. “I gotta be honest, Mik. You're not making this sound too tempting. I mean, you're saying I'd basically be looked at as some subhuman monster, and just for the pleasure I'd have to get crammed inside that weird transdimensional garment of yours.” He glances over his shoulder, wringing his hands briefly before stuffing them back into his pockets. “I think I'll take my chances, Mik. I feel like... something big is gonna go down. I want to be part of it.”

Mortia interrupts your conversation, a stack of strange clay blocks with metal bits and wires shoved into them stacked in her hand. “Well you better get going then because once we're out of here I'm blowing the place sky high.” Skull Kid chuckles. “God damn, woman. That's a lot of plastic explosive. Where did you even get that much?” She grins. “Stockpiled for just an occasion such as this! Now wrap up your sappy good-byes and get going, you might be able to get out of here if you hurry.”

That's part of being a man, you can decide your fate, stick to your ideals even if there are easier choices.
>>
“I'm not saying it's going to be pleasant. You're going to have a hell of a time adapting, that's for sure, and you're not going to be very popular with the ladies. At least... probably not.” You smile apologetically, shrugging. “But none of us fit in. I was cast out of my home, expected to die in the desert. If I return, they'll kill me. Profectus and Fulvia's homeland doesn't even exist anymore, and hasn't for a millennium. If Chrys returns home they'll either run her off or kill her.” Chrys chooses then to interrupt. “Kill me, most likely. My people are not known for mercy.” She extricates herself from under your arm, making for the doorway. “I'll be waiting by the portal, when you've finished here. Do not delay long, they're sure to send someone to check on us sooner rather than later.” You wave her off. “What I'm getting at is, you'll fit in with us because you don't really fit in anywhere else, and living amongst friends seems a fair bit better than rotting in prison for the rest of your life.”

He thinks for a moment, a very brief moment really, and then nods his head. “Alright, I'll give it a shot. If anything I can use my vast knowledge of technology to get rich, yeah? I mean you folks ought to eat up electricity.” You nod your head seriously. “I have no idea what that is, but sure.” He snatches the stack of explosives from Mortia. “I'll handle the explosives, I've had far too much experience handling them. You folk focus on setting up the portal to wherever the hell you're taking me.”
(1/2)
>>
With that he stomps off towards the doorway to the portal room, explosives in hand. Mortia huffs. “Rude. Anyway, where did you leave from? Most of the gates are in the heartland, or what used to be the heartland, but you don't look Rhynian. If I had to guess you came through the Atacan gate in the Hiacian provinces.” You wave her off. “The Hiacian Empire has fallen as well, due to infighting. The Shahdom of El-Amin and Samrajya of Kulkarni have succeeded it. What you incorrectly dubbed Ataca has been renamed to El-Amin, after the dynasty of its rightful rulers.” You perhaps said that with a little more fervor than you'd intended, especially considering you hate the current Shah and his heir. She seems to shrink, if ever so slightly. “So... I suppose that's where you'd like to go?”

You nod your head. “Yes, to the city of El-Amin. I can only hope the portal is not the centerpiece of the Shah's throneroom.” She nods brusquely, withdrawing a strange baton from a pocket in her cloak. She squeezes it tightly, and something clicks. Light extends from the top of the baton displaying a map with lands you've never seen nor heard of. It seems as if there might be a whole other continent, far across a vast expanse of water. She taps on a region your recognize, mainly due to the coastline, and the map focuses on it. She presses again on a dot on the map, and the name 'Atacan Gate' appears. She taps it again, and a friendly green box appears. Written across it are the words 'Destination Locked: Portal Opened'.

You nod, and make for the doorway. As you step into the portal room your eyes are immediately drawn to the vast pane of utter black sitting in the gateway. No imperfections, just empty void. It wasn't like this on the recording you saw of the doctor stepping through. Skull Kid, Profectus, Fulvia, Chrys, and Darzi are waiting for you. Profectus nods. “Explosives are set to go off in thirty minutes. Lets get out of here.” You pull aside your cloak, holding up a finger to indicate you need a moment before shoving your head inside.

Ricky is sitting at a table, one leg folded neatly over the other. He's eating a stick of jerky and a few sausages. You consider scolding him for eating your supplies, but you suppose you haven't exactly been feeding him. An ethereal tentacles reaches out and touches you gently on the forehead, an odd gesture. He hasn't done that before. You try to think in his general direction a question about Skull Kid's safety, to which Ricky merely nods. Is it just your imagination, or is he getting smarter?

You withdraw your head. “Alright, Ricky says it's safe. Come on then Skull Kid.” He looks at you warily, but proceeds forward. As soon as he's close enough you pounce, shoving him head first into the cloak. He struggles, but Ricky's tentacles slide out to drag him inside. You faintly hear a muffled scream, and his legs kick desperately before he vanishes inside... you really hope that nod meant 'He'll be safe' and not 'Yeah, I'll totally eat him'.

No time to back out now! With the horrified looks of your companions at your back, you stride for the portal. You hesitate only for a moment at the entrance, staring into the blackness before you. Into the abyss. It may just be in your head, but you could swear two faint pinpricks of blue light stare back at you, as if from a great distance. You stride through, and the world fades away. You feel your body shifting, warping, and then all that remains is black...

You permit it entrance, and for a brief moment the veil of reality is torn asunder. You are offered a glimpse into the world beyond yours, into that twisted realm of magic where only ones own power determines the methods and processes by which the world works. Stepping through the tear is a figure from a nightmare. A four armed, winged skeleton with the skull of a stag. The image of death itself.

It descends towards you from on high, or perhaps ascends. Up and down are irrelevant within this realm of nothing. This in-between place. You do not hear it speak so much as you feel its words worming their way into your mind, permeating through you rather than carrying to you.

>>
>>34056204
That means he isn't going to cause us eternal agony just because we didn't kill one of the most powerful people in the world after a dream. He didn't even tell us "kill him or else", he was just informing us that we will. If he's wrong, then that's them breaks.
