You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You lean back on the edge of Peter’s bed. He and Chat stare at you in expectant silence as the audio trails off. You feel… lightheaded, and heavy-chested, and generally just sort of unreal, like you’re about to unravel, or the world is about to fall away.

“…Could you play it again?” You ask, eventually.

Peter nods, swiveling back to his computer. “Yeah, sure.”

Silence. Then the sound of coughing, and someone’s chair being pulled up. And then your father speaks to you:

“Much of my adult life has been a struggle against mental illness. My battle, however, was nothing compared to my older brother’s. I watched him go from a confident, kind young man to a paranoid wreck, spending half his time either incognisant or bitter to the point of abusiveness about his situation. My parents did not ‘believe’ in schizophrenia. They did not ‘believe’ in the study of neuroscience, or of genetics, instead choosing to believe that their son was touched by a demon. Even now, my brother’s condition, my own, and those of countless others, is pictured in my mind as something leering and demonic. The small quirks of our genetics are the tiny, persistent little devils of our nature, our own arch-enemies living inside us, part of us…”

He swallows. He’s nervous. Someone shifts in their seat, someone else coughs.

“…For me and most of my generation, treating a handicap – whether it be physical or mental – is more about learning to live with it than anything else. But that doesn’t have to be the case for our children, or their children."
>>
>(2/2)

"In 1940, Dr. Abraham Erskine demonstrated that the human form could be rewritten to its core, turning a frail, sickly boy from the Bronx into a paragon of physical and mental wellbeing. In 1962, the world discovered that nature, as usual, was one step ahead.”

“The mutant condition is unique in its ability to respond to trauma…”

He goes on for a while. Occasionally he references people you’ve never heard of, or ideas your limited time with compulsory education most definitely didn’t introduce you to, but you get the gist of it. The X-gene rebuilds the human body from the ground up. The X-gene demonstrates the capacity to heal, to adapt, and to improve.

If your dad was right, the X-gene is, like, the key to saving the human race, or something.

Funny, that. It would seem like absolutely no-one wants to get saved.

“…Stark Industries is changing our understanding of the material sciences as we know them. The Storm Foundation and their young geniuses are expanding our knowledge of the universe beyond this Earth. It’s time we looked inward, and focused on unlocking the potential with in our own DNA. Thank you for listening.”

And that’s it.

You probably need to think about this for a bit.

Posting because I don't think I'll be here at the end of the thread:

Extrapolative idea: With high levels in Photo and some Claws, JJ could make bone roots that siphon nutrients from plants for a quick boost to his own health

Is JJ's mom Viper?

How about an extrapolative with Claws, Photo and Healing making a temporary artificial arm or leg that's fully functional for 1h?

Shouldn't JJ have recognized Ricochet back at the Agency? He has heard of him in thread 12, so maybe he knows the description too

Casting ideas: Charles Dance as Magneto and Emily Watson as JJ's Mom.

Have any celebrities been outed as mutants? I just thought it'd be funny to hear something like "And in other news today, former celebrity and renegade mutant Snookie has been captured."

JJ, Jay and Doug could form a band for the Tabbycat. Or just JJ & J

JJ can earn money at the Tabbycat as a pool hustler

Has the symbiote showed up yet in HMQverse?

Are boosted attributes still a thing and we just haven't been upping them enough, or have you forgotten?

Exactly how fast can JJ fly? Specifics, 'cause "as fast as a WWII plane" is vague.
>>
>>34040349
I think planes in WWII averaged about 55 mph.

Pretty quickly, keep in mind Crusty confirmed quad wings is doable once we get level 3 for more speed/maneuverability.

>[X] Many.

You just sort of sit there and stare into space. That’s probably the appropriate thing to do, right?

This is pretty incredible. And creepy. And infuriatingly mysterious, too.

“Who was he talking to?” You ask, a little surprised at how strangely automated your voice sounds.

“Oh, uh, it was this scientific summit in Prague, back in the early 90’s.” Peter gets up, rummaging through a few of the documents stacked across the shelves above his computer. “So, probably a lot of other scientists. I found more stuff, mostly old papers he wrote during his tenure with Gentech. You know your dad worked with Curt Connors?”

“Who?”

“Uh, just a famous science guy.”

“Peter interned for him.” Inserts Chat, beaming.

Oh, right. Well, good for him and stuff?

Retrieving a small pile of freshly-printed papers (you can practically smell the ink still drying), Peter dumps them down by your side. They look very… official.

“Honestly, I don’t understand most of it. It’s not really my field…” He shrugs apologetically. “Sorry.”

“That’s… that’s okay.” You assure him, staring down at the tightly-packed wall of text that comprises the first page of whatever these things are.

If nothing else, it was good to hear his voice again. Kinda.

That's a cool idea.

No. JJ's mother was capable of projecting short range microwave bursts. She didn't really use it though, her life was pretty normal.

Hmm, maybe.

JJ lives in the MU. He can probably list a good few hundred superheroes he knows solely by name.

HMQ Magneto is full Fassneto. Dat quiet intensity.

Oh, y'know, just random people. Sir Ian McKellen. Hugh Jackman. Some others.

Heh.

He could indeed.

Yes.

Yeah, most of the things you've been using are already upped to superhuman levels by your mutations, though.

I think just telling Gabby we have a lead about our dad that we're looking into is fine.
>>
>>34040736
How would telling Gaby be bad? Honestly I'd think it just wouldn't do much because of wading through the science-speak and the fact that this is old info found online. It's just a status update on "Here's what we found out about Dad-Green, no new stuff about location though but there's lots of science".

Would it be possible to use our various body-movement/reflex reading and actions to be able to hypnotize people, to a lesser degree? Act subtly in a way that makes them assume certain things about what WE are thinking? (submissive posture so that we don't get shot immediately, etc.)
>>
>>34040899
She's not in love with our dad, she idolizes him for curing her condition but it reverted and everything around him burned down. Of course she'd want to know if anyone has info on him, and then telling her we're still looking into it.

As >>34040800 said, there's a good chance she'll run off or do other stupid things - like asking questions to the wrong people.
And even if that doesn't happen, feeding her what little info we have will probably only make her worship our father more, which will make things much more complicated if (when) we find out he was involved in something bad
>>
>>34040935
Disagree, Joshua tree could totally be a game changer. We could have a mutant army, a cure for cancer, and a way to level out the playing field against Mutant Control by throwing them a situation that they could not contain

That said, I'm cool with spending points on ourselves first, and working our way toward Joshua Tree on the side
>>
>>34040998
what, I don't even... how would providing information about our father's work make her idolize him even more?
>>
>>34041010
I think it's a pointless waste.

And I don't know why JJ would want a mutant army or anything that'd get MCA on him.
>>
>>34041010
I don't think JJ is the kind of guy that would want a mutant army. Also note that we have no way to control those new mutants and a shitload of those might hate us for fucking with them. It would bring fucking chaos.
>>
>>34041010
Joshua tree is to many points that we could be using to boost powers we have been neglecting like zap hands and adhesive touch
>>
>>34041010
Fuck, we could send runners with cases of our fruit to open farmer's market, grocery stores, etc. and have them switch them Joshua apples or oranges or other kinds of fruit.
>>
>>34041035
Alternative: He becomes the cure for cancer. Publish THAT shit in the morning news, suddenly mutants don't seem so bad. Now, so long as he's working to help people, MC can't lay a hand on him.
>>
>>34041035

the NYPD and MRD will eventually get pissy about the Scar muties when the gang war finally ends

>>34041010
It wouldn't be so much having an army as proving Dad's research and theories were right.

>>
>>34041079
Why would you EVER want to do that?
>>
>>34041010
Why would JJ want to create a mutant army?
>>
>>34041080
With the sideffect of genetic mutation that could possibly go out of control and fuck things right up. Also JJ would spends the rest of his life mutating fruit for cancer patients 24/7
>>
>>34041079
that's pretty fucked up, what if we caused someone instead of getting a cool superpower gets a third eye or an extra arm or something?
>>
>>34041124
Side-effect? The way I read it, we can control that shit.
>>
>>34041035
Well, feel free to think that, but I think it'd be a powerful weapon with the right forethought and careful planning.

>>34041067
Probably not, just throwing ideas out there, but as one anon pointed out we could be the guy who cured cancer with fucking fruit and be a damn hero and just give them fruit voluntarily.
>>
>>34041096
And if they get pissy about the scar we change hideouts.
Also we don't really like our father that much anyway. Why would we give hudnreds of people possibly unstable superpowers with no way to control them just to prove his nutjob theories.
>>
>>34041080
Yeah they can. He's an unregistered mutant.

And people won't believe he's curing it. They'll probably say he's making it hide so it'll come back when least expected.

>[X] Many Again.

So, this is all old stuff, isn’t it? Nothing from that blank streak in Joshua Green’s personal history? You didn’t really expect much in the way of that stuff, but it’s still a little disappointing. It’s starting to look like you might need to get into Roxxon Energy somehow, which is a level or two of breaking and entering above what you're comfortable with. Still, maybe there are a few other options…

“So… this Connors guy. Is he someone I could meet?”

Peter and Chat share a short glance into one another’s eyes. What was that?

“Yeah, I mean, I guess so…” Says Peter, a little cautiously. “He works at the Gentech lab up in Manhattan. I’d introduce you guys, but I think I’ve kinda outworn my welcome with him…”

That sounds like a story for another day. So you’ll save it for that day.

Sighing a little, you rock yourself to your feet. Gaby should probably know… something… about all of this. You’re not sure how much of it. You gather up your dad’s work, thanking Peter for taking the time to look into this for you, and, mostly on a whim, ask whether Chat is getting in on this thing with Mr. Kamar.

Peter’s expression falls into a frown. You notice that Chat notices.

“Nah, not… not really.” She grins broadly. “I think I’d rather leave that stuff to guys like Spider-Man.”

Hah. You’d probably think the same, were you not getting paid.

And on that point, We'd already have plant control at that point so we could just TELL the Plant to stop making fruit whenever we wanted.

After we put some distance between us and Peters house we should practice flying.

Once we get enough practice we won't need to roll to be invisible while flying unless we're doing crazy maneuvers.

it does not say anywhere that the fruit would give them instant control of their powers.

Except based on our dad's research, that's totally a thing the x-gene can do since it caused it in the first place and that's what Jack's research is based off of.

The fruit may very well fix whatever is causing the mutant to have difficulty with their powers

Their lack of control isn't genetic, it's mental.

Then why does Jack work? If it's farmed by mutants, why the fuck for? If the problem is all mental, then Jack should have no effect on how their powers work unless it interacts with the x-gene specifically

>[X] Talk about some pretty important stuff.

“So, uh…” You scratch the back of your neck. This always comes out weird. “There’s something you guys should know…”

You realize, suddenly, that this will kill the mood forever. If there was any chance that these two could recapture the spirit of love after you trampled all over it on an aunt-mandated mission, that chance will dwindle to less than nil once the Jack cat is out of the bag. Or the Jack is out of the box. That probably should have been the go-to thing coming out of another thing in this situation.

Still, you guess some things are more important than sloppy makeouts. Some things.

“Basically,” Not Soylent Green. Not Soylent Green. “Jack is mutants.”

Yep that’s some strange looks they’re giving you. Like ‘you just declared yourself a mysterious druid king’ weird.

“Literally. Jack, the drug, is mutants. All…” You grope at an imaginary ball of clay, trying to visualize your point. “…mushed up mutants.”

It takes a moment for the appropriate level of horror to sink in.

“…But that’s…” Chat visible wrestles with the concept. “…that’s insane…”

“How do you know?” Peter asks, looking… pretty serious. Surprisingly serious, actually.

You tell them about the… you guess it was a factory, sort of… sparing a few of the unnecessarily disturbing details.

“So that’s what the explosion was about…” Says Peter, his eyes far away.

“The police aren’t doing anything about this?” Asks Chat, her expression a mixture of disbelief, horror, and disgust. You guess she hasn’t really had many mutant-related run-ins with the police.

“I dunno.” You admit, shrugging. You really don't. It's all been hush-hush on that end, hasn't it?

We need to fly reliably on our own before taking passengers. So far we have successfully flown exactly once. And it was more gliding than flying.

Our max speed is 300mph. Max speed might cancel out invisibility like max strength does. But even if we keep it to a comfortable 150mph we'll be able to get anywhere in the city in no time.

“The police are being quiet about it.”

You doubt they’ll break their silence anytime soon. This seems like one of those outrages that the general populace mostly wants to ignore, and only gets infuriated over with at least a small amount of reluctance.

“I’m looking into it myself.” Yeah, maybe not mention the Hellions. Or the Corsairs. Or anyone else. The Young X-Men seem the most family friendly of the bunch, but… still.

“That could get kinda dangerous, John…” Says Peter, looking a little concerned.

You shrug.

“Peter, I live in a giant disaster zone. Most of my friends could electrocute me or turn me to dust or whatever if they’re not careful. My life is already insanely dangerous.”

Hey, you technically live in the Danger Zone, right? You’re pretty sure they used to call that Exclusion Zone that before some decided it gave the wrong impression to have, like, six ‘Danger Zones’ in New York (personally you think it gives precisely the right impression, but… eh. Politicians). Haha. Kenny Loggins.

He doesn’t look particularly convinced.

“Just… be careful, alright?” He sighs. “You don’t want to get involved with the kind of people that do this crap…”

Which he must know all about, right? Hilarious. Still, it’s cool that he gives a shit.

“I will. Thanks.”

Offering an awkward wave goodbye, you head back out.

You find yourself meandering aimlessly through the streets, mostly thinking about the strange, disembodied voice you barely recognize as your father’s. You’ve heard that the first thing you forget about a person, once they’re… gone… is their voice. You remember your mother’s. You remember Joyce’s. But your dad… his existed in your memory as a sort of impression, something viscous and intangible. Until now.

It was extra weird hearing him sounding kinda nervous.

Stopping briefly at a corner, you pick up a paper from a fellow down an’ out, his bored, slumped body-language reminding you of your time in the Bugle’s employ. That stuff was nice and simple, wasn’t it? You almost miss standing there in the cold, everyone straining not to meet your eye as they pass you by. It was a great way to be invisible without straining yourself.

Though, that’s barely a problem for you anymore, is it?

You thumb through a few interesting articles. The explosion has been pushed back by a spot of local celebrity news, which brings a slight frown to your face. A few pages in, it looks like Cap’s still catching shit over that Justice guy. Apparently he’s been ‘singularly unhelpful in aiding with the search for the mutant fugitive’, and inquiries are going ahead about other individuals he’s recommended into the Avengers.

You briefly wonder to yourself how Cap must feel when he looks at the America of today. At the camps. How does he even stomach it?

Folding the paper away, you check the time.

>12:35

You’ve been wandering for a while. Still got time, though, and you’ve been considering brushing up on that whole ‘flight’ thing for some time…

Well, first thing’s first…

You make your way out of the suburban stretch of Peter’s neighbourhood, slipping out of visibility and clawing your way up the side of the first acceptably tall building you come across (damn, man, you’re getting good at that. Vertical is becoming the new horizontal). Up there it’s just you and the pigeons – which, by the way, are way too comfortable around you.

Scavenger solidarity, you guess.

You tiptoe up on the ledge, looking down at the street below. Cars streak by, tires whining against the tarmac. People move in tiny clusters, each one beating like a heart, lighting up in your ears. If you concentrated you could probably make out conversations. This kinda height probably would’ve made you dizzy not long ago, but… you feel pretty certain about you sense of balance.

Shrugging off your hoodie, you tie it about your waist, letting your arms stretch and unhinge into wings.

Right then. Getting up and getting down is probably the most important thing. So let’s see if you can hit the ground safely from an appreciable height, and then let’s see if you can go back up from there…

You suck in your breath, rolling your shoulders, and leap…

The sky embraces you. Which is to say, you fall. Very fast.

Three or four stories of air rush by you, the ground rising the meet you. You spread your wings and lean in to one side, angling your descent. The motion catches you on a slide of rushing wind – you level out, approaching the ground from a far more favourable angle. The snow streaks in, street whirling under you, and your feet touch the floor for just a few seconds before you find it in you to push back up, heaving against the air with your wings.

You shoot straight up. Hah.

You feel like an arrow must feel. The buildings quickly vanish from your periphery as your ascent takes you higher, the wind roaring in your ears. You’re flying.

Unable to contain a frenzied, adrenaline-fuelled laugh, you swoop in for a second go, and a third, and a fourth. Each ascent rises in your chest like a symphony, an explosion of victorious energy that just refuses to be contained. A bunch of tourists explode into indecipherable chatter as you cut through the air over them, moving swiftly and invisibly upon the wind. After a short while, you force yourself to come down, bobbing down through the air to one of the nearby roofs.

You let your wings fall down by your sides. You feel…

You feel incredible.

Okay, so, you can take off. And you can get down.

Let’s see about turning. Reliably turning, that is.

You leap into the air, the roof dwindling under you. A few wingbeats later, you’ve gained some appreciable altitude, the people down below moving as tiny dots through the streets. Breathing out slowly, you sort of… shift… to one side, trying to angle your weight so as to turn you about in the air. At first you just sort of stutter downwards – you keep lowering one arm too far, you think.

Come on, come on, you can do this, you’re literally designed to do this…

You recall your father’s voice. Mutation is adaptation. Adaptation is specialization to one’s environment. You are specialized for flight. You’re a flier. Flying is one of your specialities.

You try again, and are rewarded with an effortless switch in direction, your wings sliding easily through the air. For a second you feel… weightless, like you could spin freely through the universe. You veer upwards and pull your arms back, flapping mightily. The world wheels around you and you soar into a tight loop, coming down on your own trail.

Extending your wings into a broad arch, you glide leisurely on a streamer of cool air. Everything stretches out around you.

Huh.

New York State is 330 miles long and 283 miles wide

Full speed he crosses the city in 3 minutes. 6 minutes if we're taking our time.

At full speed he crosses the state in just over 1 hour. 2 hours if we're taking our time. Flying full speed is like running full speed. I wouldn't want to bet on maintaining 300 mph for an hour.

You close your eyes. Around you, the world is ephemeral and vast, changing by the second, the wind rattling in your ears. You always imagined that flying would be like swimming, just in the air, but you couldn’t have been more wrong. It’d more than that. It’s the same freedom magnified a thousand fold. When you used to float out over the clear, bright surface of the lake, you felt like you were unfolding out through the world, slipping out of your body, becoming one with something impossibly huge. Flight isn’t being one with anything. It’s just pure being.

You’re not sure how long you stay like that, hanging there, untangling the whispers of the wind. For a while you don’t even care.

Eventually, you open your eyes, squinting a little at the light of the sun, and look out over the city. In the distance, Manhattan juts out over the waters. You feel yourself smile to yourself (who else? No-one up here but you), and you push against the air, trying to eke some speed out of your limbs.

You wonder how fast you can go. You wonder how long it’d take you to hit Manhattan.
>>
>>34045326
you don't read much do you? no where does it say it must be ingested.

and giving our allies a temporary healing factor lv 2 is actually pretty damn good.

>>
>>34045329
Too bad. I'm saying it.

JJ can't possibly die till chapter 5.
>>
>(2/2)

The wind crashes by. You feel a little awkward at first, flapping spastically in your attempts to coax out as much speed as possible, but soon you realize there’s a rhythm to it. You’ve gotta time your wingbeats, then you can just let yourself glide a while.

The city turns below you, hurtling by. You’re going fast – you don’t know how fast, exactly, but it’s faster than you thought you were capable of.

Eventually, you feel a strange, uncomfortable shiver pass down your spine, and you realize you’ve dropped out of invisibility.

Dang. Okay.

Reluctantly, you slow down, swinging your body back and killing your forward thrust. Concentrating, you pull the shroud back over you, vanishing once again, and survey the land beneath you for a fitting landing spot.

You can’t help but grin at what you see.

At precisely 2:35, PM, after your first sustained flight, you touch down atop Manhattan Bridge.

The view is pretty great.

You lie back against the concrete, letting your arms fold back into their usual, mostly human shapes. You can feel the structure of the bridge shifting minutely below you, transoms groaning, cables rattling in the breeze. Traffic plods by bit by bit, sputtering in tones of metal and rubber and slow combustion. People roll up their windows and roll them down. You catch glimmers of conversation – heres, whens, little bites of other people’s lives. Someone down there’s listening to ABC on the radio. You hum along until it fades out of earshot.

You’re breathing hard – flying may be great, but it certainly isn’t easy. At least all the exertion keeps you kinda warm, though. You’re only just now starting to feel the need for that hoodie of yours.

Pulling yourself up, you look out over the river. It stretches out forever, going on and on and on… For a second you recall Layla’s weird, anxious fantasy of mutantdom, and you kinda get it a little. It’s pretty great to be able to do these things. It’s pretty great to be able to see these things.

Flying is pretty great.

Tugging out your phone, you take a few snapshots of the view, and lean out over the edge of the suspenders, sizing up the size and sway of the long cables that run all the way down to the bridge below. Are you a bad enough dude to slide down that?

As it turns out, you are.

I'm not saying I don't want to EVER get higher levels. But genetic mimicry level 1 is super useful for only costing 1 x-point.

If you want to get level 2 or three I'd be cool with that also. But Ideally I would take our 3 x-points and buy Genetic 1 and Claws 2 right now.
>>
>>34046538

You guys don't seem to remember Genetic Mimicry very clearly Level 1 only lets him take on minor traits from someone whose genetic material we've ingested (so what, the first time JJ swaps spit with Laura he'll suddenly look vaguely like her?), and Level 2 only lets us turn into an exact copy of someone for a few minutes.

>ENHANCED KINESICS

Cost: 3
>JJ’s senses become attuned to the fine details of human locomotion. He becomes capable of accurately predicting a person’s mood and immediate actions based on the subtle flexes and tensions of their physiology. In some cases this ability can reveal more than just mood, and stops just short of reading another person’s mind.

Holy fuck, I never really looked too closely at this one but it would be a huge boon for a guy like JJ, both in fights and in social interaction.

It just seems logical. Even in P&P games, it's often hard to DM in nat 1's as anything but either extreme bad luck or true incompetence. This is okay for JJ, as he isn't a hardened adventurer, a combat specialist, etc etc, but he's already immune to botching the things he's really good at (piano), so I don't see why the same rule shouldn't apply if he gets real proficient at something else.
