Unable to contain a frenzied, adrenaline-fuelled laugh, you swoop in for a second go, and a third, and a fourth. Each ascent rises in your chest like a symphony, an explosion of victorious energy that just refuses to be contained. A bunch of tourists explode into indecipherable chatter as you cut through the air over them, moving swiftly and invisibly upon the wind. After a short while, you force yourself to come down, bobbing down through the air to one of the nearby roofs.

Okay, so, you can take off. And you can get down.

Let’s see about turning. Reliably turning, that is.

You leap into the air, the roof dwindling under you. A few wingbeats later, you’ve gained some appreciable altitude, the people down below moving as tiny dots through the streets. Breathing out slowly, you sort of… shift… to one side, trying to angle your weight so as to turn you about in the air. At first you just sort of stutter downwards – you keep lowering one arm too far, you think.

Come on, come on, you can do this, you’re literally designed to do this…

You recall your father’s voice. Mutation is adaptation. Adaptation is specialization to one’s environment. You are specialized for flight. You’re a flier. Flying is one of your specialities.

You try again, and are rewarded with an effortless switch in direction, your wings sliding easily through the air. For a second you feel… weightless, like you could spin freely through the universe. You veer upwards and pull your arms back, flapping mightily. The world wheels around you and you soar into a tight loop, coming down on your own trail.

Extending your wings into a broad arch, you glide leisurely on a streamer of cool air. Everything stretches out around you.

Huh.
