Civ thread everybody! Get in here!

Okay, we're gonna be some thing a little different today. I'm sure that people are getting tired of the same old games, so we're not gonna be in the middle ages. Saddle up, it's time to go west young man.

There are three different types of people in the west:
>Natives: These people have been here since the beginning. Sadly, they never really progressed past the bronze age. They are however adapt at living here. (Penalty to tech, bonuses to farming, hunting and gathering)

>Mountain men: Some of the first people to journey to the west, these are hardy men and women that abandoned civilized life to search for their fortune. The years in wilderness has worn down their social skills a bit though.(Bonus to survival, penalty to diplomacy)

>Settlers: The newest wave of people, they brought all the comforts of home with them. As the newest members of the west, they are still trying to adapt to their new lives.(bonus to tech, penalty to survival)

Post race and location along with your choice of people ie

Ahh the promise land is finally in sight. After a grueling six months of hardtack, pickled veggies, and walking(made worse by your short statue), end is near. The land was dry, swampy, mountainous, and hostile but gnomes never quit. The wagon train stops are the bottom of the island, forming a protective circle around the camp.

You are (insert name), the wagon master and leader of the group. The vines trailing down root the island in place seem sturdy enough to hold your weight. However the wagons and their steam engines would be hard to get up. Maybe a pulley system, attached at three load bearing points and a... never mind, it can wait. The wagons have enough food to last three months, four with some rationing. The air already rings out with the sounds of children playing and the women preparing the evening meal.

You call a meeting, and announce that tomorrow and for the rest of the month that the town will focus on

"Our supplies wont last us long, we need to gather as much food as possible" you say(still need a name, unless you want to be milhouse) to the assembled gnomes. The prospect of running out of food hits the men, steeling them for the coming hunts.

The month passes quickly as hunting parties are sent out and return, often with the bloody carcass of a buffalo or an ostrich horse set upon an open wagon. the women and children cast off lines made from the vines above them in hopes of catching a fish. Several are landed and thrown into the stew pot. The women also gather plants, some of which look familiar. The new land has it's surprises and leads to a case of food poisoning. Everyone recovers, but this is a warning of the dangers of the new land.

A strange figure is spotted in the distance, but when hailed ran off into the nearby forest

Unrealistic in the sense that it'd take way too much time to build the steam pressure to launch a cannon ball.
And gunpowder is a lot harder to get than steam. Especially when we already have steam engines.
>>
Rolled 100: holy shit

The recent scare with the figure has the blacksmith working overtime. A common sight on the east, airguns are fighting it out with black powder. Like any rational person, Victor sets about making a slightly larger one. All through the night and day for a week, Victor and his apprentices work. The unveiling in the center of the camp is the highlight of the month, where the steam cannon is set up facing a gap in the wagons. The cannon boiler is fed wood and seawater, while the top of the great brass barrel has a funnel attached. A ball the size of a gnomeling(whats the child form of gnome?) is lifted up be a small conveyor belt and settled in the barrel. Using a small instrument, the cannon is aimed a large tree near the forest. The anticipation build along with the steam as the crowd waits.

WHOOOOSHH!!
The wagon rocks back as the cannon launches a 20 pound ball into the air. the crowd cheers as the tree is reduced to kindling. Any pansy elves in the party would have cried, while the secondary effect takes place. The ball, which had been hollowed out, was filled with a combination of high proof alcohol, flint, and a fungus that stuck to objects as it burns, combine to form a natural napalm and a blazing inferno around the tree.

Happy for the new weapon, Milto still orders the men to increase the watch and to carry extra rounds. No one would be getting through the wagon circle without a few holes in them

The giant floating island looks nice this time of year.up until recently, climbers have been the only way to collect vines. Not any more. A collection of blankets and sheets is waxed over and sewn together into a curving triangle. A collection of scrub trees and grasses provide a basket strong enough to hold 5 people. The hot air supplied by a fire in a steel bowl lifts the men into the air. Clipping the balloon to vines still attached, the basket rises. 100...200...300..400 yards up and the balloon passes through the low clouds. 500 yards up, the balloon is battered by water, pressing to get into the envelope. The wax holds, but the men must scramble to protect the fire. 600 yards and the lip of the island appears, covered in ivy and vines.

The men steer towards the lip, extinguishing the fire with sand from the beaches. That first gnome steps out, carrying his carbine into the new world. Covered by giant pines that stretch up two, three hundred more feet. Dragonflies flit by, carrying away rabbits for their meal. A stream gushes over the lip, coming from a large lake. The air feels more dense, against all reason. To the right a hill rises up bare of trees, excluding the giant on the top. 500 feet tall and 75 wide. The land seems to let things grow much larger, either from the soil or the air.

The men climb back into the basket and lower down to sea level to report.

The hunter who spotted the figure has been worrying about the possibility of an attack. Working as a watchman almost every night and glancing towards the horizon during work. Finally, Milto allows Spurdo to explore the forest, but only after a night off from the watch. Spurdo and his friends, 5 in total, arm themselves with carbines and hatchets and set off in the morning.

Six hours in and no sight of the figure. A snapping branch alerts the party, causing them to scramble with practiced ease into the leafy ceiling. Crashing through the undergrowth and low branches is the figure from before. Long limbs, a stocky torso, and a massive rocky jaw with crystals imbedded in the skin. Following the creature in the branches, the expedition sees a cave with three other creatures arrayed in and around it. Getting away, the party escapes alerting the monsters

The news of the creatures causes the inventors in the town to work overtime with ballon advances. The design of the balloon is looked over and prototyped, with a new shape like a teardrop with a port at the top controlled by the men in the basket. It will allow the rise and fall to be more controlled and happen more quickly. The basket is redesigned to hold up to 10 people and 150 pounds of armaments. The original balloon is scraped to build the new ship.

Those trolls are trouble. The logical thing to do is to kill them with fire, as the resident pyro Victor advises. The trees around the area are chopped down at night and carefully lowered with pulleys to create a fire break. the area not to burn is watered overnight. The last of the napalm is loaded up into the balloon, along with three men and the remaining cargo are is loaded with rocks for bombarding the trolls' cave. Milto himself arms up, loading his bandolier with special rounds made for this. The rounds, with a small dose of napalm located in the center of the round with a copper cover over the tip. The balloon is attached to a steam wagon, which speeds around the cave making a U shape before coming to rest behind the cannon wagon.

The fire rages for what seems to be forever, before the raging cries are heard. The men and women shoulder their rifles, aiming into the hole in the flames. The steam cannon is loaded and prepared to fire a napalm round. The first troll bursts out, carrying a gleaming golden ax. The camouflaged riflemen take aim, sweeping the rocky creature with small doses of fire.

The waves of fire stagger the beast, slumping over as a final round pierces it's stony hide. The axemen swarm in before another troll appears. They set on it with hatchets and torches, burning the flesh as it struggles to regrow. Finally, all the limbs are severed along with the head. The body pieces are loaded onto a sled, and thrown into the still blazing woods. The Golden ax was carried of the field and handed to Milto.

Three more creatures come running out of the woods, the steam cannon powers us and launches a series of cannon balls. The fire splatters on the creature, as they continue to run screaming at the riflemen. One flaming and carrying a gnome sized bundle makes it 30 feet from the front row of spears, before falling. The ax crews make short work of the thing, as two carry the bundle between them.

The child, already the size of a full grown gnome, is tied up and attached to a large rock.

The battle continued, remaining one-sided until a troll was able to reach the spearmen. With no regard for the bullets and blades piercing his body, the troll swatted aside the men, only to come face to face with Milto. With the gun hang at his side, Milto swung desperately with the ax. The blade sparked against the rocky skin of the creature, before becoming imbedded in the skull of the troll. Ignoring the fatal blow it received, the troll reached for the blade stick in it. The crystalline claws of the creature grasped the blade, before screaming in terror. The wagon master, still clinging to the handle of the giant weapon, saw the blade glowing white and waves of heat coming off it. The blade slid down the troll skull, melting through it like a hot knife through butter. The troll, cut in two, stopped and fell before the mayor.

The struggle over, the fires burning low, and the surgeons at their work. The gnomes had weathered their first fight in their new land. Sending the injured back to camp, Milto rallied the uninjured gnomes(2 dead, 7 wounded).
"Men, look what we have done. The trolls, hated by all civilized races, are finished. But we are not done. There is much and more to do. For we do not stand here by the quickness of our feet or the magic gifted by gods, but by our own hard work and dedication. We have come here to get away from the ones who wish us harm, alas there are those who will follow us or stand in our way to life. We are gnomes and have come here to be peaceful but will be fierce. We are here to be with our loved ones and will not let them be taken from us!"

The ore in the troll cave turns out to be a gold/zinc alloy, which let Victor refine the ore very quickly. Melting the ore, skimming off the rock, letting metal cool and allowing the gold to settle to the bottom of the container.

The refined gold is stored in one of the forge wagon chests, while the zinc is cut into the needed disks and stacked with copper. The battery holds all the electricity created by a day of work. Shocking a deer carcass, Colin is happy to see it dance a dwarven jig for a few minutes.

Long-term goals: I believe we will eventually have two encampments, one on the ground and one on the floating island. We should work now on choosing a location to build the settlement on the ground. Perhaps it should be a mining camp by the cave. As for the battery, it will eventually be used to string telegraph wire between the two encampments. There was a case of mistaken identity, which led to a steam engine being shot. Thankfully there were only a few minor steam burns. A plant in the forest is found, named goosefoot, which was taken to camp. It doesn't take very well, wilting in a week. There is still wild specimens of course.

Tired of living in tents this whole time, the town sets to work on small houses, ten by ten by six feet. These houses are then covered over with sod to keep the chill out. When finished, the camp looks less like a camp and more like a series of small hills. The houses are completed just in time to hold off the sea breeze and first snow of the year.

The trolls, which had grown into four and a half tall are put in a much larger stable, eight feet tall and covered in sod as well. The eldest, a female, was used for heavy labor on the building of the stables and houses.

The troll cave mine is expanded, digging deeper into the gold and zinc. The steel picks make quick work of the soft metal, with the extra muscle from both trolls. They seem to recognize the cave, be it from smell or sight, it cant be said. The picks slow down as the metal mixes into iron.

The steam cannon is pointed at a stack of logs and fired at with scattershot. The wood chips are sorted out and wet down and put in the mined out parts of the cave. The napalm mushroom's last spores are sprinkled in the wet wood chips. Later in the month, more mushrooms are sproutng in the cave. The mining team has taken to putting wastes in that section of the mine. Hopefully there doesn't prove to be a vein there.

We should start on the bessemer process, so we can mass produce steel for the steel gods

The smiths, tired of working out of small wagons, enlist the help of the now towering trolls to set up a more permanent smithy. The frames are put up, tall enough to let the soon to be fully grown trolls move freely. Standing fourteen feet tall, the long smithy building is well ventilated and fireproofed. The smiths, happy at last, set to work making finer tools. This will allow jewelry and gears to be made. A friend of Milto, Barsim uses the magic axe to create an easy way to melt metals. Mounted on a wagon axle, the molten metal can be poured into custom made molds.

The largest snowstorm anyone has seen blows in from the north. Next turn, many actions will have a penalty applied.

The ease at which the axe melted anything it touched astounded the whole village. The axe is removed from it's stand as a smelter and the runes etched in the metal are examined. Much to finely wrought and in an alien language, the symbols them selves make no sense and change as you look at it. one woman, after staring at the runes through the night falls asleep. The next morning, the village awakes to the sounds of joy. The woman, (name here), had found a way to convert the runes to elvish, which were translated into english, then finally into Gnommish. The words translated into "WHITE HEAT BLADE HEAL" or meaning heat the blade when it is in healing flesh. The blade was custom made to fight off trolls. Funny how it was carried by a troll. The woman believes that with time, she could learn more of the strange language.

Nice thread, well detailed writing gives a vivid image of what's happening. More details and branches always help flesh a story, much like the one we opened now with magic and that woman.

So I recommend next thread to help flesh out the culture and add religion, even if that religion is based on logic and secularism, like the Father of Understanding or something like that, though perhaps we should be able to choose between 3 gods, each giving perks. That along with enough fanart of gnomes and the west at the time can really set the mood.

Here's an image not for ants.

Ever played the PC game civilization? It's basically this. The game master creates a world, a map, and a people with input the players give him. Myceanea living underground, undead in a necropolis, elves in city ruins.

You start with a small band of people and begin a civilization to stand the test of time. Some stop once they got their city established and are recognized in that world as a faction, other set out to conquer it.

Generally you play with rolls (dice+1d100 in the email field) to decide oucome, to help remove GM bias as much as possible and suffer failures.

Sadly though they almost don't exist in the European time zone (from this hour and until 12 hours from now more or less)

You should definitely try to extend the map, and consider future events. Like, if another race of natives decides to attack us, it should give the feeling that we're not the center of the world, always acting, always on the attack, never anyone else making a move on us.

Like, explorers could find a new tribe of natives that are being supplied by competitors from back in the east and used as proxy against us. If we wait X amount of turns which you decided before hand in your notes, they'll come at us with eastern gear eventually. They'll have their own tech progression and attack plans and it would feel like we're just one player out of several in the world. Act or react instead of just being the only ones to move the story.

There are a couple variants of the image with more /fewer races and other misc changes, such as more environments. But it's usually just a couple races and a few new areas, so that's pretty much the only image.
