Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

The time for the assault finally came and was a success, all things considered. You acquired all the crates, delivered them with the trackers unnoticed, and even managed to keep one, albeit damage. However, it wasn't without problems. Dominic is dead, with Gabriel and Vincent's man Grover stuck in the infirmary. Now it's over and the familiar, bitter taste of a lost man is still fresh on your mind needs to be taken care of. Violently.

The drill yard already has a number of armsmen already present as you enter, and after a moment's inspection you consider your options. The shooting lane still has open slots, with several men using the sparing rings and similar equipment. Taking down a few targets sounds fine, but you don’t doubt you could rope in one or two of the armsmen into trying you.

After contemplating a moment, you decide to…

>Hit something.
>Hit someone.
>Shoot something.

You step up to a shooting lane and take your place, shouldering your rifle and slamming a fist onto the starting key. With the blare of a horn the targets spring up from their place and you begin a familiar dance.

Perhaps too familiar.

Every shot seems a second too short, an inch off-base. For every one you manage to wing you miss two. By the time it's all said and done your mood, if anything, has only soured.

Taking a step back, you put away your weapon and take a breath. Maybe you need to stop while you're behind. Or maybe you need to get a bit more physical.

Since you're aiming skills seem to have taken a nosedive you decide to try your hand with the armsmen. Removing your armor with just your basic fatigues, tattoo in place, none of them seem to recognize you and vice-versa. Maybe for the best.

You approach a ring with four men, two fighting with the other two watching from the sidelines. You give a nod to the latter, joining them while the fight continues.

"Howdy," One of them greets with a smile, while the other simply stares in curiosity.

"Hello," You answer, signaling to the fight. "Either of you looking to get some sparing time in?"

"Thought I'd kick the ass of whichever of them won, but I bet you'd be more of a challenge," The man chuckles, extending his hand. "Name's Gerab. You a new guy?"

"Michael," You accept the hand. "And... something like that."

The current fight ends shortly after with a close win for the smaller of the two, and after a few moments of gloating and grumbling they clear away for you.

The man Gerab is larger than you and more muscled, but you're not too daunted by it. You both take a stance and begin circling while the other look on.

"I tend to know most new people," Gerab says as he watches you. "What platoon are you with?"

"Don't have one," You answer. "Anymore, at least."

Before he can think that over you're on the offensive, moving quick and moving under the big man's defenses to land a solid one-two punch to the gut. While he lets out a grunt he doesn't falter, countering with a swing that you narrowly side-step. A quick right hook to the face does the trick, causing him to reel back a step and getting a rise from the meager crowd.

"Alright," Gerab says, rubbing his jaw. "Not bad, new guy."

Bouncing on your heels, you signal him to make a move and he politely obliges , charging at you headlong.

Despite his size, the man moves faster than you expected. He's on you in moments, and you narrowly avoid being trampled by his charge. However, it turns out to be a feint as he drops down to swipe your feet out from under you as you moved.

You're not quick enough to outright dodge it, but you roll away and manage to recover. Seemingly impressed, Gareb takes on a more cautious stance as you stand.

About this time you see that a few more people have gathered to watch, though out of interest or sheer boredom you're not quite sure.

Looking back to your opponent, it's obvious he's decided to play defensive for now.

"Scared?" You taunt.

"Come over here and find out," Gerab answers with a grin.

You approach quickly but erratically, rather than the blunt charge he used. You land several quick blows against his raised arms, causing little damage but obviously grinding his nerves and forcing him backwards. The crowd quickly grows tired of his effective, but boring, defense and begins throwing out taunts and jeers.

Finally, his patience runs out.

He strikes out with a fist intent to knock the wind out of you, but you're no longer there. You're already on the attack moving to his exposed side, connecting a heavy blow against the side of his head, and before he can try to recover you deliver another. His head goes sailing with a small steam of blood and the crowd cheers. Gerab retreats, still dazed from the blow, and finds himself against the boundary of the ring with nowhere to go.

You've seen several people who like to make their fighting look pretty. You get the overwhelming urge to throttle them whenever you see it occur.

Not wasting time, you send the bigger man to the ground with a quick kick that knocks his legs out from under him. You're on him in an instant, wrapping your legs around one of his arm. You grab hold and pull just enough to be a problem. Gerab lets out a pained grunt...

...and slaps the mat three times, signaling his surrender.

You release him immediately, taking a moment before standing to dust yourself off. After he gives his shoulder a few testing movements you offer Gerab a hand, and though he nearly drags you down with him he accepts and give you a heavy slap on the back.

"Damn fine moves, Michael," he said, and after a moment of staring something seems to click. "Hang on a minute..."

"Lieutenant Dunkin," You give him a salute, sporting an amused grin yourself at his expression. "Inquisitional Bodyguard, at your service. Thanks for the fight."

His mouth hangs open a few seconds before he seems to catch himself and returning the salute with his own.

"Sergeant-at-Arms Thax," He stops to think. "Armsman, and no problem. I was wanting to fight you ever since I heard you have the Commander a good what-for."

With that you turn to the crowd and, no worse for wear, Gerab raises your arm as a sign of victory. The result is cheering, and as you dismount from the ring several other armsmen seem to want to try themselves against you.

After that fight you're actually feeling a lot better. Besides, being popular with the armsmen never hurt. Seeing no reason not to, you accept the challenge, to everyone's cheer.

You take on several men and a pair of women, most armsmen and one f the former actual crew. You manage to take down nearly all of them, though some come closer than you would like. However, by the time the final challenger comes you're bone tired. You manage to reach a tie, but even that left you needing several minutes before you could stand.

Battered, bloodied, but grinning, a few pats on the back and a crowd cheering your name keeps you on your feet. With your track of time shot to hell you gather your gear and head for your room. The elevator ride is thankfully a long and cooled one, the doors opening-

-to reveal a rather shocked Roxy staring at you, with Jeeves floating nearby.

"My word," Your servant comments.

"Ho-Wh-" Roxy scowls. "What the hell happened to you?!"

All you reply with is a grin, no doubt bloodstained from a few unlucky hits. At least you still have all your teeth. Wordlessly, you move past them and they part to let you.

"He's going to get himself killed," Roxy mutters.

"He's a Guardsman my dear," Jeeves replies. "They have a nasty habit of sticking around once they've settled. Think of a loyal pet, or a bad rash."

You find your room and place your gear aside before falling into bed. You're exhausted, but it's a welcome feeling. With the days toll finally catching up with you, you fall asleep in moments.

You thought you'd manage to make yourself so tired you wouldn't have the strength to dream.

Sadly, it looks like that plan failed.

This time, though, things are different. The hallway your in is well lit, the windows on the right side showing nothing but blinding white light outside. Despite this, you can hear the faint sounds of a city. The hall itself reminds you of the Brice office, but the design isn't quite right.

Most concerning of all, you lack a weapon. You always dream with a weapon in hand or nearby.

A voice comes from farther ahead, but oddly it doesn't make you're heart freeze up. It's almost familiar, and definitely female. Looking behind you, you only see more of the same hallway. For now you suppose you can play this game.

With heavy reservations you start forward, ready for something to come tearing through the serene setting and bring you back to reality of your current psyche. However, all the monsters that usually torment you remain absent.

After a time the hallway ends at an odd looking door seemingly made of paper and strips of wood. Pushing it aside, you find a large courtyard covered in exotic plants of various colors, shapes, and sizes. Grass pokes up through most of the tiles, with no tile at all around the fountain at the center, which sits in the shade of a massive tree.

There, the woman from before sits on the edge of the fountain with a bare foot lazily moving in the water as she reads something. Though she seems a ways away, you can hear her humming a tune you vaguely know but can't place.

This isn't right. Where's the horror? The darkness? This isn't right at all.

Your paranoia gnaws at you, but you decide to persist. You've made it this far.

As you walk forward your hands twitch, feeling naked without your rifle or even knife in hand. As you get closer, you're uncertain grow.

She's a young woman, of maybe just a girl. You always had a hard time knowing when childhood ended and adulthood began with civilians. Her hair is dark and long, with green eyes that seem glued to the book in her hand. At least until you politely clear your throat to get her attention, well away.

Her gaze flashes from the book to you as soon as you make the noise, eyes going wide.

"W-who are you?" She asks, more curious than anything else.

"I was about to ask you the same thing," You reply.

"What are you doing here?"

"I have no clue."

Her brow furrows.

"You're not very aware for a soldier," She notes. "You ARE a soldier, right?"

While your subconscious refused you a weapon, it was nice enough to allow you your armor.

"I am," You nod. "Or was."

"Was?" She asks, tilting her head. "What happened?"

"I died," You answer.

"You died?" She echoes, more confused than before.

"Boo."

At that her eyes narrow, and you hold in a chuckle.

"It's... complicated," You tell her. "How about we restart with names? I'm Michael."

"Naomi," She replies, smiling. "Nice to meet you."

"Considering that you've not turned into a daemon and tried to eat me, I'd say the feelings mutual."

This seems to cause her trouble, as she seems ready to answer several times before looking down at her book. You try to make out what it is, but at this angle it's impossible. Then she looks back up at you with something resembling humor.

"Wouldn't that make me a deamonette?"

"I... suppose so," You admit. "I never take the time to check which it is."

"Sounds reasonable," Naomi laughs. "But why would I do that?"

"I've not got the best head on my shoulders," You admit, perhaps a bit too easily.

"Well, there's plenty of room," She says, scooting over. "If you want to talk-"

An electronic ringing sounds across the courtyard and you both pause in surprise. Then it rings again and your vision begins to fade. You fall into darkness, but only for a time.

You wake and feel like... well... you went several rounds in the ring with nearly a dozen people. Damn.

Your hand reaches out for the source of the noise, expecting Jeeves, but instead you realize it's coming from the vox still stuck in your ear. Hoping your grogginess isn't too obvious, you answer.

"Go ahead," You say.

"Just thought I'd make a confirmation call," Noregia's voice makes your skin crawl, shaking any remaining sleep from your system. "Everything checks out. All things considered, you did better than I expected. Anticipate more work soon."

Instead you grab a shower and a quick breakfast you throw together yourself, pull on a fresh set of fatigues, and decide to...

"Keep up the good work, Jeeves," You chuckle.

"O'coursh!"

While the sound strikes several interesting images in your mind, you shake them off.

"Ma'am?" You call out.

"Yes?" Comes the answer, sounding rather underwhelmed at your barging in.

"I... uh... thought I'd stop by. I'll be outside until you're ready."

"Thank you, Lieutenant."

With that done you close the door and wait patiently. Though, near the end, you feel as if she's taking her time just because of you. Finally, a faint 'Come in!' sounds from inside. Back through, you find the Inquisitor freshly dressed, still attempting to get her damp hair under control with towel to mixed results.

"I didn't think I'd see you this..." She pauses when she finally catches a serious glimpse of you. Something resembling a good mood almost immediately vanishes, giving way to the type look of weariness and annoyance that you're used to. "What did Vincent drag you into?"

Oddly enough, that does little to improve her mood.

"So explain to me why you decided to fight ALL of my armsmen when I wasn't looking?" She asks, crossing her arms.

"Bonding?" You offer, and at her look quickly add. "They didn't act like the people before me did that kind of stuff."

"Some did, and some didn't," She says, signaling you to a seat. "I chose each of my bodyguards for different reasons, even if their basic goal was the same. They had their way of performing their duties, and you have yours."

"Fair enough, I guess," You shrug.

"Moving on," She says, leaning back in her chair. "I suppose now is as good a time as any for your report. The Commander has already sent his, and I don't doubt Sergeant Kelleher will do the same soon enough. Speaking of her..."

It's true, and we know that shit just happens sometimes. A shame that it's some irrelevant gangers on the edge of the hive that ended up doing them in, but nobody made the wrong call.
>>
(Sorry about that, friends. Grabbed a bite to eat.)

"What can I say?" You shrug. "We had a good plan and a better team. Our luck just ran out."

"So you say," She nodded, accepting your answer. "Just try not to justify every mishap as 'bad luck.'"

"Sorry, ma'am. Guess I've been a follower of Murphy a bit too long."

"Who?"

"It's a Guard thing."

"I... see. Or maybe it's best I don't. Well, best we start from the beginning."

You recall the assault as best as you can, simply stating things as they happened. Aside from the occasional question the Inquisitor gives you her complete attention. When you're done she seems to contemplate what she says next rather heavily.

"You were there," She begins. "You know soldiers better than I do. Should I keep Kelleher as squad leader of Alpha?"

"Ma'am, you know the first loss is always the hardest," You tell her. "We should wait and see if she can recover."

"I suppose I do," The Inquisitor sighs. "And I suppose you're right. We'll give her time. For now."

"But while we're on the subject," You continue. "Will there be a service for the Corporal?

"Of course," She answers, almost sounding offended. "I may be heartless, but I'm not cruel. Father Mikel will see it done for all that attend."

"Will you?"

"I... will see what I can do," She hesitantly replies. "Things to do, people to purge and all that."

"Yes, ma'am," You say, though you're not so convinced.

"While I question your motives, your results keep me from saying too much," She smirks. "If that's all?"

We are looking after her health because we know she puts off and skips meals due to work.
>>
>>34019881

"You've been remembering to eat more, haven't you?"

The look of surprise that comes over her is oddly satisfying, and the attempt at covering her embarrassment borderline cute.

"Yes, well," She shrugs. "Things to do, people to purge?"

"That's not quite going to cut it," You deadpan.

"Oh, hush," She huffs. "You're my bodyguard, not my personal chef and certainly not my mother."

"But since I'm your bodyguard, all aspects of your health are important to watch over," You explain. "What kind of bodyguard would I be if I let you go hungry? On that note, what about your sleeping patterns?"

Perhaps you're enjoying getting an inquisitor flustered a bit too much. Sadly, you don't particularly care.

"...nevermind," She grumbles, resting her chin in her hand. "You're WORSE than my mother. Are you done scolding me? Some of us have important work to do."

"Only if you'll let me feed you, ma'am," You say.

Her face goes through several interesting changes at that; first confused at the punchline she's missed, then confused at the mockery gone unheard, and finally just confused. Her mouth opens and closes several times, and you're not quite sure if she's ready to start laughing or shouting.

"And... why would I do that?' She asks.

"Because I asked nicely?" You answer, though it only seems to annoy her further.

"If it were anyone else I'd think you were mocking me," She sighs. "Sadly, we're talking about you."

Your only response is to smile, which only widens when it causes her to laugh.

"How many times, exactly, did you get hit in the head last night?" She asks.

"I could tell you, but I'd have to take off my boots to count that high."

"Lovely," She rolls her eyes. "Alright, fine, you've convinced me. What did you have in mind?"

"I've cooked you dinner," You muse. "Why not breakfast?"

"Well... perhaps if it's as good as it was last time," She answers in a challenging tone.

You return to your room with the Inquisitor in tow, and much like before she takes a seat at the table while you begin to move about in the kitchen. While you don't know anything fancy for this early, you know what's good. To you, at least.

"You and Jeeves have been getting along rather well," The Inquisitor says, making conversation as she waits.

"He's an interesting man," You say. "Well, interesting skull, at least."

"You're not the least bit unnerved by him?"

"In the Guard you get a pretty good 'creepy' threshold for the enemy. Why be worried about a friend?"

She chuckles.

"Few in your position were so easy to accept one of our more... unique members. Though, seeing this, I'm wondering if the list should be changed."

Turning, you find the Inquisitor leaned against one of the counter, amusement shining clearly in her eyes as she watches you. Clad in your apron with egg beater in hand, you don't have a clue what she's talking about.

"No one badmouths the apron," You warn, shaking your culinary weapon at her.

"Perish the thought," She chuckles, waving your words off. "I think it's rather... fitting, to be honest."

"I'm going to act like that's a compliment."

Her laughter does little to bolster your confidence on the matter.

Soon enough her food is done, but the lack of your own makes her curious.

"Already done," You explain as you set down her plate, patting your stomach.

"Still, I feel bad just eating in front of you," She says, hesitant about starting. "Are you sure you're not just saying that?"

>"Are you offering to share?"
>"The longer you wait, the colder it'll get."
>Try to feed her yourself.

"Do you want your brain scrambled or fried?" She asks in an equally sweet tone.

"...you're a psyker?" You asked, actually surprised.

"Do you REALLY want to find out the answer to that?"

"How about you eat, I talk?"

"Sounds doable."

Scratching your ear to confirm no loss of brain matter, you decide to find something else to talk about. Quickly.

Do you still dream, like about better times? With everything I've seen in the Guard, it seems that the dark beasts don't simply vanish when I close my eyes...

I can only imagine what it just be like for you, with what you've seen.

Sorry to bring the mood down, it's just something that's been on my mind.
>>
>>34022006

>>
>>34021895
>>"Our friend Noriega called."
>>
>>34021895

"Our friend Noriega called," You say, and quickly grab her attention. "Sounds like we did a good job. Not just with the drop-off, either."

The Inquisitor pauses in her meal, eyeing you warily.

"Vincent and his people clapped a few trackers on the crates, and considering his typical 'better than you' persona, I'd say Noriega's none the wiser."

"And who decided this? Vincent?" She asks, wiping at her mouth with a napkin.

"I did, actually," You admit, and she wears a hesitant look of approval. Though it dampens at your next words. "Vincent came up with it initially, though."

"With hope, they'll point us somewhere a bit more important than an underhive stronghold."

A silence lapses into place, and as it stretches on your thoughts again drift back to the dream, and dreaming in general.

"Do you still dream?" You ask her, getting only an uncertain look. "Like, about better times?"

At this, the Inquisitor's gaze softens and she gives you an uncertain smile.

"More often that I'd like," She admits. "Why?"

"I dunno, it's just... with everything I've seen in the Guard, it seems like the monsters I've fought don't just vanish whenever I close my eyes."

Talking about this isn't easy, but when you meet her eyes and see pity it only makes your stomach churn more. The last thing you wanted was pity.

"I can only imagine what it must be like for you," You continue, wanting to move the subject away from you. "What what all you've seen."

"I've seen... quite a bit. Perhaps more than a bit," She answers, once more allowing her wariness to peek through her professional mask. "We've all got our monsters, Lieutenant."

When she reaches across the table and takes your hand in her own, squeezing, you're too surprised to act.

"What matters is keeping them out of sight," She continues in a soft, comforting tone.

(Cont.)
>>
>>34022950

You stay there, holding her hand and meeting her gaze, until you realize what you're doing and snap out of it. You retract your hand as if it had been burned, but the Inquisitor only smiles. A sad smile, but a smile all the same.

"I'm sorry," You say. "Didn't mean to bring down the mood. It's just... something that's been on my mind."

"Nothing to apologize about, Lieutenant," The Inquisitor replies. "The only thing missing is a good bottle of amasec. However, I'm afraid it's a bit early for that."

At that she stands, and you follow, but as you turn to start cleaning up the Inquisitor gently takes you by the arm.

"If you ever want to talk, about anything, I'm always here to listen," She says, and before you can respond she takes her leave.

You watch her go, not moving until after the door clicks shut. It's a simple thing, but even so you find yourself thinking over the Inquisitor's words. Even so, with it being this early you can't just sit around and mope.

Instead, you decide to...

Having not been in the best condition last you saw of her, you decide to seek out Roxy. As it turns out, it's not as difficult as you thought it would be.

You find her with the other two remaining members of Alpha in their barracks. Jami is still sleeping soundly away on his bunk while Jonah seems to be drawing something on a notepad. Roxy sits at the foot of her own bunk, hellgun half-constructed around her.

As you enter, both of the awake members turn to face you, though neither makes a sound. For Jonah this isn't a change, while Roxy has the look of someone seeing trouble ahead.
