Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you parleyed with the High Admiral, read a crazy man's diary, and entered Fulvia.

You cast a wary eye over your surroundings. You seem to be standing on a road of some sort, or at the very least a cleared path. In one direction it stretches on for what seems like an eternity through scorched wasteland, ominously glowing monoliths dotting the landscape. In the other direction it winds its way through the palace gate, further into the mountains. You don't see any obvious signs of corruption, merely ill-repair. It seems as though everything around you is crumbling to dust but there is no obvious reason. No horrible monstrosities ripping apart the architecture nor sickly yellow lights crawling across the slate grey sky.

A baleful red light shines down on you from the hovering sphere high above. You tense, half expecting the damned thing to rain fire down upon you. Instead a quiet voice filters in through the back of your head. {It will ignore you so long as it is repairing itself. Hurry through the palace, lest you attract undue attention. The nest should yet still lie beyond the mountain range.} You recognize it as Fulvia's voice, though she sounds distant and weary. Likely because of the massive amount of vys she just extended to pull you into her own mind. {I will eject you once your task is completed. In the event of your demise, you may lose a significant portion of your remaining sanity upon return to the outside world.}
(1/2)
>>
Well, it certainly would've been nice to know that you lose your mind if you should be overwhelmed by whatever fresh hell awaits you beyond the mountain range. You're also relatively certain Fulvia just implied you were trapped here until such a time as you die or complete your objective. You only have three days to study the portal before you and your party are either terminated or thrown into a cell and forgotten. You really hope this doesn't take too long.

>>
You start to make your way towards the palace, drawing your spear from your cloak more for piece of mind than anything else. It might just be your imagination, but the monoliths around you seem to glow brighter as you walk past. As you pass beneath the great arched entryway into the courtyard a massive chunk of one of the towers snaps off of its base and begins to hover slowly towards the sphere in the center of the yard. The closer it gets, the more it seems to warp and twist. What had once been stone seems transmuted into a dark metal, iron you think.

You try not to gawk, focusing on the path ahead. The red spotlight had followed you up to the palace but after passing beneath the entryway it vanished, and the sphere returned to inactivity. The same cannot be said of the crows that seemed to fill the air. As soon as you passed beneath the archway a handful swooped down to perch on post and stone pillars, their beady red eyes focused intently on you. You do your best to ignore them while searching for an exit, but none is forthcoming. The section of wall that blockades the mountain pass has no obvious openings, no windows or doors. It seems you'll be forced to enter one of the adjacent buildings and search for a way past.

The palace seems to be arrayed roughly in a trapezoidal shape. There are three major buildings, one to either side of you and one surrounding the gatehouse you entered through. Then there is the far wall at the entrance to the mountain pass, a twisting, haphazard construction of stone and metal. The buildings all seem to flow into one another, with the two buildings adjacent yourself seem to connect to the wall.
(1/2)
>>
The building to your left appears to be some sort of gallery, long colonnade props up the roof. The entirety of the wall sheltered within is made of clear glass, allowing you a view inside. It appears empty, but you suppose looks can be deceiving. The building to your right is a simpler affair. A squat, sturdy construction with few windows and only a single door. Large sections of the roof are missing, seemingly caved in. If you had to guess this building was some sort of barracks or armory, long since abandoned.

>Go through the gallery and look for a passage past the wall.

>>33941916
I will never admit that Prof is right. Even when he is.
>>
>>33941933
I wouldn't use it on a fight unless it is absolutely the last chance but I would like to try it for a meditation when we have some time and a nice place to meditate.
>>
>>33941933
Those are just the immediate consequences too.
There's also the the facts that we lost sanity, the dead god reached into our mind, we were on the verge of becoming addicted, and that it discoloured our eyes(maybe not super important, but who knows what prolonged use causes).
>>
>>33941829
Because we are at 5/10 on the insanity scale with a 10/10 ending the quest and using spice increases insanity.
My source of this knowledge is the ask.fm page
>If Mik ever becomes too insane to function, I'd probably do something like switch perspective to one of your party members and let you either play out killing Mik, or just letting him go on a rampage. Either way it would mean the end of the quest.

3: What addiction? Crashing is expected, Withdraw is expected, but I don't think we had the urge to spice up again

We definitely did have an urge to use the spice again. When we were talking to the Archmage we were overcome with an urge to feel like a god again.
>>
>>33942078
>how much more insane

At least one point I would guess. We were maybe at 3 after the mask and we were at 4 after the spice.

If we want to hit the spice again I would at least wait until we got metal mastered enough to protect our mental health. Or we could use very small amounts to meditate on grandmaster difficulty meditations and only.
>>
>>33942128
What?
>>
>>33942150
>Or we could use very small amounts to meditate on grandmaster difficulty meditations and only.
Soma did say that was the safer use of it.
>>
>>33942150
As much as I want Grandmaster I don't think we should risk what's left of our sanity on it considering the spice is essentially a last resort.
>>
>>33942132
Did we have to roll a willpower check? If not then its not a problem, if Mik can handle it its all good
>>33942150
If I remember right you have to know whats gonna happen for metal to help, so that might not help at all, but if you're right and it was a full sanity point that shit is tough shit, but it still works with the whole only when we need it thing
>>33942172
How much sanity we lose when we hit dat dope ass spice
>>
>>33942192
>>33942150
Well, we first need to get out of Fulvia and then get out of this world before we can meditate with spice. So, we are not doing that any time soon.
>>
>>33942192
That doesn't mean it's safe.
>>
Primarily you lost sanity after taking the spice because a fragment of the Dead God has wormed its way into your consciousness. Had you not worn the mask, you would be able to use spice without going mad.

That said, I don't really track 'sanity points' or anything of the sort. It's a thematic thing. The -/10 scale is a rough approximation at best.

Sure, if it's spice or certain death by all means let's get high, but using it in other situations is dumb. Like how people wanted to use it when we arrived at the tower when we had zero info of what was actually going to happen next.

>>33942278
>Had you not worn the mask, you would be able to use spice without going mad.

well fuck

Do we have enough mental control to use it for meditation and not increase our insanity?
>>
>>33942216
>Did we have to roll a willpower check?
After the first time we used it? no

Wil we have to once we use it a couple more times? Only Soma can say it was stated to be addictive so it's either 100% sure we will, or Soma will cut out checks and just make us sniff it when in situations of extreme stress
That spoiler part is not for you Soma, and I would like to state that unauthorized usage of ideas within will be recognized as copyright infringement
>>
>>33942316
He did not say it was safe, he said it was safer. And saying something is safer than losing control and dying doesn't mean too much.

You eye the barracks suspiciously for a moment before shaking your head. You'll take your chances with the Gallery rather than almost certainly encounter Fulvia's internal security force. That in mind, you set off towards the nearest set of glass double doors.

Much to your surprise, upon opening the door the previously empty gallery fills itself rapidly, frames materializing on the walls and canvases piecing themselves together to populate them. Seven statues dominate the center of the room, each one of them depicting the idealized form of a man performing some task. In the center, the largest statue shows this idealized man holding up the world. The statues surrounding the central statue depict him tilling a field, plunging a blade into a cowering enemy, casting a simple spell, holding a child in his arms, kissing a woman's cheek, and holding a clenched fist to his chest. You're fairly certain it's supposed to represent the values of the Rhynian Empire, but you can't exactly be certain.

You move on through the gallery, trying not to get distracted by any of the works of art surrounding you. Some of them depict pastoral scenes, some of them appear to be portraiture, one that drew your eye was an ominous image of blood-red skies, balls of fire raining from the clouds to destroy the village below. It might just be your imagination, but for a moment you could have sworn you heard the terrified screams echoing faintly through the gallery.

(1/2)
>>
As you reach the wall of the gallery that ought to abut the wall across the pass, you find it dominated by a single, massive painting, flanked on either side by a single lit torch. It's a portrait of an elf, ancient beyond measure. He is entirely bald, but has a beard that reaches down to his knees. A strange basket is strapped to his back and loaded wit hall manner of papers and miscellaneous items. A horrifying creature you can't identify flits away from his palm, and he leans heavily upon an ancient staff banded with some sort of artifact. A plaque at the bottom of the frame reads simply 'Father'.

You peer at the man for a few moments. There is obviously some human blood in him, or else his ears would be more pronounced. Only the eyes, black as coal, and the slight elongation to his skull give away his race. The gem set in near the top of his staff seems to pulse and throb with some hidden power, and the horrifying little creature flying out of his palm seems to follow you with its eyes. Perhaps the best word to describe the whole ensemble is creepy. You shake off the feeling of unease that pervades you and look around the area for some sort of doorway, but none is forth coming.

Could we vote on where to once we leave the gallery? I remember initially there was the option to climb the wall
>>
You wander towards the wall, pausing to examine some of the artwork there. There are three frames to either side of the massive portrait, each one depicting a different scene. Furthest from the massive portrait of her father is a portrait of a stern looking older gentleman you can't identify. There is no plaque to identify him, but he wears some sort of uniform and has all variety of medals pinned to his right breast. Presumably he was some sort of military leader. After that you come to an image of a large mess hall packed with people, each one of them chatting happily amongst their friends. The picture nearest the portrait of Fulvia's supposed 'father' is a simple brass key, lacking any sort of adornment.

You move on to the other side. The glass windows had ended two dozen or so feet before you reached the portrait of her father, meaning it was contained within a shadowed alcove. The pictures on this wall take a decidedly different turn than the ones on the opposite wall. The first picture is of a man with a cloth held to his mouth, subtle red tones marking blood stains on the cloth. The next is of a darkened barracks, two men with mask on loading a covered figure onto a stretcher. The third is simple, a keyhole. You could swear you can see light coming from the other end.

You glance from the still life of the key to the picture of a keyhole. This seems like some sort of obvious puzzle, but you can't for the life of you figure out the solution. It would seem silly to pick up one picture and try to put it inside the other. Perhaps the paired images are merely intended to offer some sort of symbolism, or otherwise purvey a message you're failing to grasp.

You glance from one picture to the other, and then shake your head. It's better that you don't touch anything, lest you do some sort of irreparable damage or discover something Fulvia would've rather kept secret. After all, the last thing you want to do is piss off the already half-insane AI who's head you currently reside in. You turn on your heals and march down the hall, back to the doorway just in front of the seven statues at the center of the gallery. As you step past the threshold into the courtyard, the works of art disassemble themselves behind you. By the time you've reached the center of the courtyard all that's left of the gallery is an empty room.

Above you the hovering sphere has made worrying progress on its repairs. Where once there were massive, gaping holes in its armor on every side it has now managed to seal off all but one on its left side. Even that hole has grown significantly smaller, you can only hope that it won't start trying to kill you as soon as its outer shell is mended. That would ruin your day right off.

You try to ignore the impending completion of the ominous ball's repairs, instead focusing on the barracks. You peer into a few of the windows but all you can make out are a few bunk beds and motes of dust. You do hear an odd crackling sound near one of the windows, coming from inside the building. Unfortunately you couldn't identify any source. In the end you decide to simply take the plunge into the unknown and hope that nothing tries to attack you. As you push open the rotted wooden door and step past the threshold the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end...

You raise your spear just a moment too late to catch the blade of searing blue energy currently hurtling towards your neck. You channel a burst of vys throughout your body to enhance your flexibility, allowing you to duck out of the way of the first swipe. Unfortunately as you're still recovering your opponent attacks again. This time the blade bites deeply into your calf, sending a jolt of white hot fire up your spine. Your legs give out underneath you, but fortunately only a moment later the blade is jerked out of your flesh and the pain subsides.

You manage to push yourself up onto one knee and get your spear into a ready position. Hovering a handful of feet off the ground in front of you is an ornately decorated device with a long, whip-like tail dangling beneath it. At the end of the tail is a glowing blue 'stinger', the thing that just stabbed you presumably. Energy arcs erratically off of the tip of the blade, some striking the floor and some even striking the body of the little hovering drone itself.

You try to stand, but find you can't. Your legs feel numb, like they're asleep, and your calf is bleeding profusely. It's difficult just to prevent your arms from twitching and keeping your hands clenched around your weapon, whatever that stinger did must have inhibited your movement. Before you have a moment to collect your thoughts the little hovering drone winds back its tail for another strike, you're going to have to defend yourself...

You catch the long, whip-like tail just below the stinger itself and twist, trapping it within the prongs of your spear. Unfortunately You didn't anticipate just how strong this little hovering construct was, the blade jerks the head of your spear back and continues to advance towards you. Thinking quickly, you channel vys into your legs and force them into motion, leaping out of the way just in time. Unfortunately the construct disentangles itself from the head of your spear, leaving it free to attack again.
>Vys Pool: (8/29)

>Enemies Remaining: 1x Palace Guard

>You have the Initiative!

Neither you or the drone have the advantage of reach, your spear is just as effective at striking it as its tail is at striking you. Thus you consider your options. You could try to drive the spear through a weak point in its armored shell, likely damaging something important and permanently disabling it. You could also leech vys from the construct until it can no longer power itself. However, you remind yourself this is all simply part of Fulvia's mind. You'd really be leeching Fulvia's vys. Then you could always try and run for it, and hope you can find a way into the mountain pass before it catches up...

You know, that's a good question. You probably ought to have 'Rhynian Training' or some such.

I'll get to it momentarily, or at the end of the thread. Probably once you're into the mountain pass I'll add something in.
>>
>>33945360
I'd rather you do it after the thread if possible, we haven't done much in this one yet.
>>
Your spear darts out, leaving a deep gouge in the protective shell covering the construct. It's knocked aside by the blow but quickly recovers, rearing back its tail to strike at you again. Before it gets the opportunity your spear darts out twice more, leaving a small puncture in the front of the egg-shaped drone and another long gouge in its shell. The drone retreats a few feet, allowing you the room you need to turn tail and run. You duck through the doorway deeper into the barracks and slam the door behind you, finding yourself in a large, empty room filled primarily with rotted bunkbeds.

You don't have long to take in the ambiance, just as the door slams shut that glowing blue blade buries itself in the door, leaving a large, scorched hole in the wood. You set off at a sprint down the long hall, ducking under shattered support beams and sliding around rusted bed frames. All the while that persistent little drone hacks away at the door. The old, rotten wood doesn't offer much resistance and the drone has already hacked it free of one of its hinges. At least whoever designed the damned thing didn't think to give it manipulator appendages.

You reach the opposite wall and are relieved to see a rusted, iron door set into the stone wall that ought to abut the wall across the mountain pass. You grab ahold of the handle and throw all of your weight backwards. Much to your lament, the door doesn't budge an inch. You brace a foot against the door frame and pull with all your might, but even as the rusted hinges complain and the door begins to grind open the construct finishes hacking away at the wooden door behind you. It falls to the ground with a heavy thud and the little drone comes flying towards you.

(1/3)
>>
You barely manage to get the door open a foot before the drone is upon you, tail whipping furiously back and forth. In a fit of desperation you expel as much air as you can from your lungs and try to squeeze through. Your armor very nearly dooms you, but you manage it just barely. You quickly retreat further into the passageway, the drone unable to pass through the gap you've made in the door. Its tail still strikes at you from the doorway, but you're far enough away that it can't reach.

You take a moment to heal the wound in your calf, it had sliced right through the chainmail protecting your legs, and the blood had coated your pant leg. That itself is a simple fix, you wave a hand over the garment and dark, red blood begins to drain out of the fabric. You have it evaporate into your surroundings, rather than letting it pool on the floor somewhere. Your wound attended to, you set off to find a way past the wall.

The passage is cold and dark, dark enough that you can barely see a few feet in front of you. Fortunately it isn't exactly a difficult passage to navigate, it curves gently and just by keeping your hand on the right wall you eventually find a heavy iron gate. A panel glows softly next to it, an array of symbols illuminated on its surface. You press your finger to the one corresponding to 'open' and the gate begins to recede slowly into the ceiling, machinery grinding all the while.

You begin to trek up the snow-covered mountain road. The wind howls louder the higher you climb, storm clouds massing ahead of you. It seems like in the blink of an eye the slate grey skies have turned an angry red, shot through with tinges of yellow and black. You have to wonder why on earth someone would go through all the trouble of inventing such elaborate scenery inside the mind of what is essentially a servant, and for that matter how they would go about doing so.
(2/3)
>>
As you crest the ridge at the top of the path you find yourself looking down on a valley. In the distance, an elaborately carved bridge arcs across the mountain pass and connects the two sides of the chasm. Just beyond the bridge it seems as though the world vanishes into a yellow mist, whatever may lie beyond concealed. You can only imagine that there lies your destination, however between you and the bridge lies an army at camp. Hundreds of soldiers, most of them wielding long spears, mill about aimlessly. They lack any sort of distinguishing features, and in fact sort of remind you of the figurines Demetrios made from stone when you dueled him at the Academy.

The pass, uncharacteristically, doesn't provide you with many shadows to hide in. It seems almost as if the lighting is constant no matter where you are, despite there being no obvious light source anywhere. Now that you've noticed it, it's impossible to ignore. Even the bottom of the river seems to be stuck in some kind of eternal twilight. Fortunately the properties of your cloak mean people tend to simply ignore you, their eyes sliding off the impossibly black fabric. You slip up to the riverbank unnoticed and sink into the river without a sound.

As your head becomes submerged in the water your armor seals itself off, a metal cover sliding up to protect your mouth and nose while a glass visor slides down to keep water from getting in your eyes. Not that you'd mind, you spent innumerable hours submerged in the ocean at your master's insistence. Finally an odd bag deploys from the small of your bag, quickly filling with air. It very nearly forces you to surface but before you do the bag starts to take on water. You float weightlessly in the water for a few moments, trying to figure out how you can breathe underwater. Eventually you decide your armor must keep a reserve of air just for occasions like this.

(1/2)
>>
You swim down to the riverbed and start to kick your way downstream. Really, the current does most of the work for you. It's surprisingly strong. Worryingly so, in fact... the thundering sound of rapidly flowing water isn't helping any either. The river grows shallower and shallower as you approach what appears to be a series of rapids up ahead. You barely have time to twist your body around so your feet will be going down first instead of your face before you're in the midst of the white water. You're forced to surface, but that's the least of your worries. You doubt the soldiers are either willing or capable of following you. As your arm smashes into a rock hard enough to fracture the bone you start to think this might have been a tad dangerous. You'd start clawing your way towards the coast, but you're in the thick of the yellow mist at this point and can't see the shore.

You slam roughly into a few more large rocks but eventually you get the hang of steering yourself through the rapids with your feet. You'll push off of one rock and brace yourself against another to maneuver around some obstacle or another. Just as you're getting the hang of riding the rapids the world drops out from under you and you feel your stomach lurch. Desperately you swing your hands out looking for something to hold on to. Your hand hits something and you grab on, your hand sinking in to whatever it is several inches as you struggle to haul yourself up.

Your armor unseals, visor sliding into your helmet and mask receding into your armor. It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust to the gloom but eventually you realize that you're in some sort of structure, composed mostly of a black, tar-like substance as far as you can tell. The entire place smells of sulphur and death, and some sort of yellow fungus is growing all over the place. You think you can spot a vaguely humanoid silhouette sinking into the muck, and you see something move, in the distance. Away from you, fortunately. Behind you the river turns into a waterfall, thundering down into the depths below.

This looks like corruption if you ever saw it, in fact this is probably your destination. How are you supposed to destroy this place? You doubt lighting it on fire would work, surely that would've already been tried. You're also doubtful trying to exterminate every living thing in this place would accomplish much of note. Fulvia has had an army besieging the area for days now, probably, and they've accomplished nothing.

You push yourself up, prying your hand out of the goo with some difficulty. Hesitantly, you step off of the thin ledge you're standing on and onto a thicker, adjacent strand. You're glad this gunk is sticky, rather than slick. That would've just made navigating this place impossible. You take a moment to heal the collection of bruises and fractures you accumulated on the way down the river, it hardly drains you at all. Your wounds attended to, you considered your next move.

A hellish screech interrupts your thoughts before you manage to get too far, and suddenly the place seems to come alive. To your left, a vaguely feminine figure you hadn't even noticed begins to stir, struggling to free herself from the black tar that encases her. Ahead of you an entire swarm of little insectile monstrosities begins to swarm out of a hole you hadn't noticed. Seems something knows you're here, and isn't happy about it...

>Quickly finish off the figure closest to you and then prepare to fight off the horde.

You back up several steps and brace your spear in front of you, ready to attack anything that gets too close. The spiders are swarming over the bridge towards you, and the feminine figure has gotten an arm free. The mold growing around its head seems to throb rhythmically, almost like some sort of perverse heartbeat. You reach out towards Fulvia through the communication brooch, hoping she might shed some sort of light on what your next move ought to be.

{Fulvia, can you hear me?} There is a brief delay before she responds. {I can. Do you require assistance? I may be able to seize direct control of a security squadron and send them to aid you. Normally I would be able to crush any foreign presence in my mind with impunity, but the corruption has significantly weakened my control.} Actually, that would be pretty damn great right about now, you'll need to consider that. At least Fulvia seems stronger now, she's probably been gathering vys near the portal.

{Maybe, but I was contacting you to ask just how I'm supposed to destroy the corruption. I've found a nest of some sort, and there are a bunch of spider-things running towards me. Also a lady covered in tar and fungus trying to pry herself free.} There is a long pause, during which the spiders advance further. They're starting to get uncomfortably close now, you can see black fangs, their mandibles rubbing together like little twisted hands... Finally she responds.

{I believe there ought to be a focal point of corruption somewhere in the nest. You say they take the appearance of arachnids? Perhaps there is a queen or a broodmother of some sort. would certainly require a lot of mastery to pull something like that, maybe even require making these effects some kind of sub group of magics where you can be a grandmaster in this group.

Water will likely be our cheapest attack and we are right next to a waterfall. Ice needles, GO!

Actually there was big scandal about how he struck the whore and she protected herself. Yes we learned this in character.

Can we use manipulate + pioson to remove the corruption from the security protocol in the tar you think? An ally would be nice.

As soon as they have the spiders attention they are to disengage so we don't run the risk of having them fall to corruption

I'm assuming this has a bonus for being near a large source of water, right?

Setting fire to the tar could risk lighting the security unit.

From top to bottom, 1, 1, 0. Because of the water fall and the moisture in the air you'll be getting additional bonuses to water magic.

Fire in close quarters is not the best idea.

thats why we aim for legs. asshat.
and the more "spiders" we kill the more we fuck around with fulvia's system.
>>
You brace to receive the lead spider's charge. By your count, there must be a dozen of them. You're good, but you don't know if you're good enough to face a dozen spiders made of corruption and spite all by yourself. {Fulvia, a squadron of security would be greatly appreciated. As soon as possible, in fact.} She replies after a moment. {I can keep track of ten units simultaneously in my current state. Were I at my full capacity, I could control hundreds.} That last line is delivered with no small amount of annoyance. {They will be there shortly.}

An idea occurs to you as the spiders grow ever closer. They're rather tightly bunched together, save a handful trying to flank you on either side. You begin to channel vys, finding it comes much more naturally to you here than you would've expected. You draw water from the falls and freeze it rapidly, forming a veritable cloud of jagged ice shards. You grow the cloud larger and larger, until the spider leading the charger tenses its legs to pounce. At that moment you release the spell, hurling the shards of ice at the tightest grouping of enemies.
>Vys Pool: (7/29)

The lead spider jumps, only to be impaled in a dozen places by the shards of ice you'd created. It goes flying back, tumbling off the edge of the walkway. Its comrades don't fair much better. The three in front where killed or at the very least incapacitated almost instantly, while the shrieks of those behind quickly fill the cavern. Some of the spiders trying to flank you leapt away only to fall into the depths below, and others were wounded. When all is said and done you've effectively halted the spider's charge, with the vast majority bearing some sort of injury.

(1/2)
>>
>Enemies Remaining: x6 Corruption Drones (x5 Wounded)
>Allies Remaining: Mikhael, 10x Security Drones (Arriving in 6 turns)
>They have the Initiative!

The remaining spiders hiss at you in unison, backing away slowly. For a moment, you think they're about to break and run. Then you notice their mandibles moving rapidly, spinning something together. It's with some amount of apprehension that you watch them gather black gunk between their mandibles, weaving it into a tight wad...

>Launch a piercing strike at the nearest spider before it can finish... whatever it is it's doing.
>Erect a barrier of ice in front of you and reinforce it while they work. (2 vys)
>Try to scare them off with a jet of flame channeled through your armor. (1 vys)

Alright, got that post archived. Next post in new thread.

To clarify, the corruption is not part of Fulvia's systems. In fact it's actively destroying Fulvia's systems. Killing them is a good thing.

I misread it as if the spiders where corruputed parts of her system. they she would later cleanse or some shit once we get rid of the bbeg
