About four years ago, my mother's car got attacked by some kind of superpowered freak. It put my mother in a coma for a good while, and she's been hospitalized ever since.

Now you'd THINK that the cops would be interested in pursuing someone who would and CAN punch cars into oblivion, but pretty everyone I told about what happened laughed in my face.

The only person who actually DID believe me is a girl I met in the park the night after the accident... and thanks to her, now I have my own powers.

>"Don't worry," I say. I'll find whoever has the book and get rid of it before it can fall into the wrong hands. That's what a hero would do, right?"
>"I suppose so," she laughs. "But while you may have an experience advantage over whoever gains a Branch by reading the book, you should still be careful, okay? Watch out for the new Branch users, and also the people who were sent to weed them out."
>"Got it," I nod.
>"Especially the Tree of Life," Lorelei says. "They and I have a lot of bad blood between us... it's best that you not mention my name to anyone you meet who's with them."

>The Tree of Life, huh... I'd expect something more along the lines of "Yggdrasil" for the name of an evil organization.

"It looks like I'm going to have my work cut for me," I say with a long sigh. I mean, it's true that I used to dream of fighting against an evil organization when I was little, but the past four years of tough battles against Branch holders has made me kind of wary of things like that.
"Well it's not like it's -your- responsibility to take care of this," Lorelei shrugs. "I mean, you could always step back and let the others fight over the book, all I wanted to do was warn you that you might be mistaken for the person who has it."

"No," I shake my head. "I'm going to find the book before those organizations can get their hands on it, and then I'm going to give it to you."
"Wha?"

For the first time in all the years that I've known her, the steady rhythm of Lorelei's heartbeat speeds up a bit.

"Joshua, are you sure?" Lorelei says with a nervous smile that I've never seen on her face before. "I don't have any use for such a thing myself, and it's not your duty to go after the thing to begin with..."
"No, this is what I want to do," I reply.
"...but I just don't see why..." her voice trails off.

Slipping free of my grasp, Lorelei takes a few steps back and pulls her hat down so that the brim's hiding her face from view.

It doesn't hide the fact that her heartbeat is starting to speed up even more, though.

"...and here I thought this would be another of our usual meetings," Lorelei mumbles. "Just a nice way for me to relax after my usual running around."
"Eh?" her words hit me like a punch to the face. "I- If I'm making you uncomfortable or something, I really didn't mean to!" I stammer.
"No," she shakes her head, "I suppose you've gotten a little bit of courage since the last time I saw you and it's kind of surprising, that's all."

Courage, huh.

Nobledark is when the world suck but has plenty of heroes and good guys. Think Silmarillion.

Grimbright is when the world would be wonderful if not for the overwhelming majority being assholes. Something like a Fae Court.

Grimdark is when both the world and most of the people suck. So 40k.

Noblebright is when the world is pretty awesome and most of the people are good. The villains are mostly ineffective. Think saturday morning cartoons.

As Lorelei backs away from me, I stare at her in shock. I mean, I didn't expect her to-

"You know, it's no good if you lose your drive halfway through," Lorelei says, licking her lips. "Still though, it wasn't bad for what I assume was your first kiss."
"Uh-" I gulp. "Y- yeah, it was-"
"Wonderful!" she laughs. "I think that a first kiss is the perfect thing for us to part ways with!"

Turning her back to me, Lorelei pulls the brim of her hat down with either hand as she looks up at the moon.

"...and perhaps we'll greet each other next time with a second kiss."

I- I don't even- does that mean that she likes me back? Or maybe she's just playing around with me again... but she said that thing about a second kiss and I don't know why she'd do that if she didn't intend to...

My brain is just a pile of mush right now, I swear.

thumpthumpthumpthump

thumpthumpthumpthump

Is that me? No, it's coming from the direction where-

"Eheheh... eheheheheh..." I start laughing with a big goofy grin on my face. Lorelei's heart is beating just as fast as mine! It wouldn't be doing that if she was just playing around, so-

Raising my fists to the air in victory, I take a good long while to calm down before I start on the long walk home.

Grampa would be so proud of me... I mean, I kissed a girl! I kissed the BEST girl! And then she kissed me back!

My emotional high lasts the rest of the night, and I end up going to sleep in a better mood than I've been in years.

After taking a quick shower, I turn my TV to the news so I'll have something to listen to as I get dressed. Besides, there's always a chance that they'll talk about something suspicious that ends up being Branch-related.

That's probably my best bet to find that book.

Weather report...

Fluff piece about baby bunnies...

...ooh, here's something interesting.

"Yesterday, police were called to an abandoned building downtown where they found several young men who were brutally beaten," the reporter lady says. Haha, I made the news again! And it looks like those ladies will get their stuff back, so all's well that ends well.

I wonder if Mom's watching this...

We'll bring you more information as it comes."

I don't really feel like going all the way out there, but there's no sense in passing up a potential lead. Not to mention that a Branch holder out there with the power to blow buildings up would be pretty awful to have running around here.

With my immediate plans now set, I throw on my jacket, put my goggles in my pocket, and make my way out into the big wide world.

"Hmm..." I mumble as I look at the map that I pulled up on my phone. "If my house is here and this is North, I just need to keep on going in this direction..."

Since I actually had a Synapse, that means that whoever this is has already been in contact with another Branch holder before... shit.

Basically, I have two possibilities here. One is that I'm dealing with evil organization types, and the other is that whoever has the book shared it with a friend, and I'm going to have to deal with multiple Branch users.

And I don't want to have to put up with either one, to be honest.

two

two humans

not moving

"...shit," I grit my teeth. Two people, at least one of them's a Branch holder and neither one is moving which means that either they have garbage Synapse range or they're waiting for me to make the first move.

Still, though... even if they happen to know that I'm in the area, it's not like they know -where- I am. And on the other hand, I happen to know -exactly- where they happen to be.

Alright, let's go Joshua. This is a sneaking mission, and I happen to be the best at sneaking!

Cancelling any and all noise produced by my footsteps, the change in my pockets, and even my breathing, I slowly approach the rubble site where my two targets are (maybe) waiting for me.

There's someone standing with their back to me wearing a puffy jacket with a hood that's covering up anything that I could use as a distinguishing feature, and a guy with orange hair and sunglasses.

"We've been here for a while..." the jacketed person says. Sounds like a girl from the voice. "Are you sure you felt something?"
"No doubt about it," the orange-haired guy replies. "I felt the Synapse about ten minutes ago."
"Want me to go flush them out?" she asks.
"No, I have this," he shakes his head. "If it's the person who bought the book, they've most likely shared it with a friend," he sighs. "And if it's someone from an opposing organization, I'm more suited to face them than you are."
"You think it's the same one who did this?"
"Well they -do- say that a criminal always returns to the scene of the crime... though I have no idea how true that saying actually is," he laughs.

After giving a parting wave to his associate, the guy slowly walks away from her and around a corner...

I should probably try to avoid fights when I can, especially when I don't know what I'm going up against. But at the same time, I -would- like to know what these two are up to...

"Don't worry, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you," I say. "If I was, I wouldn't have bothered to give away my presence by talking to you."
"Your presence was already given away by the Synapse," Lloyd says, looking around to try and see if he can find me. "I know you're somewhere in here."
"And that's where I'll stay," I reply. "And now I have a few questions for the to of you, if you don't mind..."

"Who did what?" Lloyd scoffs.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about," I reply. "The pile of rubble that you're standing on used to be a building up until yesterday. And the next day, two suspicious types start loitering around he area?"
"It wasn't us, you jackass," Lloyd replies. "We're trying to find the culprit ourselves."

Regular heartbeat, not to mention that he said more or less the same thing back before I made my presence known. Good.

"C'mon, cut it out," the girl sighs. "We don't have anything to hide, we're working for an organization called the Tree of Life."

"Calm down already, dammit!" the girl punches Lloyd in the shoulder. "Mr. Mystery Ground Person, we're looking for the Book of the Gardener. We think that the person who destroyed this building is a Branch holder who came about through reading it, and we'd like to get to him before we have a population explosion of Branch users on our hands."
"For all we know, THIS guy's the one who has the book and he's just toying with us," Lloyd mutters under his breath.
"Anyways," the girl continues, ignoring her associate, "you seem to be interested in the public's safety... how about we team up?"
"What!?" he stares at her. "You've got to be kidding-"

And then she punches him again, decidedly harder than the first time. He only seems to feel it for a second, though...

"We help you find the person who did this, you help us retrieve the book!" she says. "It's win-win, right?"
"I don't know," I reply. "I have no idea what you people plan on doing with the book once you get it, after all..."
