“So how's this going to work?” You ask Ice. You and Katya are sitting in her office- partially packed up, now- across her desk from her, your travel bags by the door. You're both in civilian clothes, your leave time having officially started at 00:01 in the morning when you were asleep. Barring a massive shift on the front, it'll last until the same time next week, too.

“Ok, here's how we're going to do this. The squadron is going to be shifting forward with just personal effects to Sperenburg, a Luftwaffe base in the eastern part of Germany. We'll get theater briefings there, handle most of our admin work, then head forward to wherever it is Admiral Nixon wants us. While we do that, Merlin and your fighter will stay here with a few of Commander Laroux's witches. When your leave is over, you'll both come back here and join us in Poland.” She says. “it means we'll just have to pull you up to speed in Poland, because you won't be getting the time at Sperenburg.”

You nod- it makes more sense than trying to move the Wyvern to meet you wherever with the rest of the squadron, and Barin is secure enough, especially with Brigitte's girls here.

“We will be using civilian transport?” Katya asks, looking at the travel papers. Ice nods.

“Everywhere but to and from the castle, yes.” Ice says, nodding. “We got lucky with you leaving the castle, you can catch a ride to London with Matron O'hare, she'll be taking a helo. From there you'll have to get a ride to Heathrow, and you can take a commuter flight to Paris.”

She looks over at Katya. “Katya, I've prepared a letter of introduction for you, for when you pay your respects to the Paris coven, if you want it.”

Katya nods. “I believe I will use it. It is not everyday one can present a letter of introduction from the Romanov line of witches.”

Ice blanches. “I-”

Katya laughs, shaking her head. “I am, how you say, having fun at your expense, friend Tabitha. I will still take it, perhaps it will make it easier.”

Ice nods, color coming back to her face. “Hopefully. I don't think you'll have too much trouble, especially with Frank there, but you never know.”

She turns to you. “I've also got a letter of introduction for you, Frank. You're going to want it.”

[x] For what?

You take the envelope, turning it over to note the back of it is sealed with wax- you suspect that's some kind of tradition. “So what's this for?” You ask.

“Well, it's considered good manners for a witch visiting a city or country to introduce herself to the sisterhood there.” Ice says. “There's exceptions to that, but not here.”

“Was london an exception?” You ask. Ice shrugs.

“Kind of.” She says. “We were there as members of an allied military force, even though we were off duty. Plus, we did, remember?”

You frown. “You said you just wanted to see the house, not-”

She shakes her head. “Regardless, in this case, Katya will be expected to introduce herself to the Witches of Paris, or at least make her presence known to them. Being that she's under my command for the duration, I wrote her a letter of introduction for them, just telling them who she is, who I am, and what she's there for.”

“Ok, and me?” You ask. “I'm hardly a witch.”

1/2
>>
“No, but you're involved with witches, weather you like it or not. When Lady Dowding made you a guardian, you gained a lot of privileges in respect to witches. But you're also expected to abide by a few formalities, this is one of them. Your letter introduces you as Guardian of witches, Frank Bishop, and-”

Katya looks at Ice, somewhat sharply. “But that is incorrect, Commander. He is not guardian of witches, he is guardian of the witch Tabitha Kazinski.”

Ice shakes her head again. “His title was never specified and I'd say he rates the title, don't you?”

Katya smiles slyly. “If you are saying so. Will this be an imperial appointment?”

Ice smiles. “You can't get me twice with the same joke. You find me an imperial eagle signet and I'll make it one.”

“What are you thinking, Frank?” Katya asks. “Which would you introduce yourself as?”

[] Just keep the general title. Ice is right, and like you said, it's not everyday you can say you got the title from Imperial nobility

Can we perhaps use the "Guardian of Witches" and then list Ice (Tabitha for the actual event) as our specific charge? Otherwise, I'll go with just Ice...

...Unless we can wrangle a title as the Guardian of our squadron. That would be a decent blend perhaps of the options. Or perhaps not. I don't know.

While it does fit more accurately, we aren't a "Guardian Of Witches"... until we get an imperial eagle signet. Say wasn't most of Ice's grandmas wealth in Paris? Surely there is other objects where it's stored...

If we could specify as Guardian of Spellcaster, I'd be fine with that. But Guardian of Witches includes all the Soviet witches we could end up flying against, as well as the matrons who may or may not hold grudges over things we've done (looking at you, Longstreet). It's asking for trouble.

>>
>>33919291
Nah, she's a bitch, but a bitch with purpose. In her eyes, Merlin was just a weak witch who didn't deserve a second chance. By all metrics, she was a failure to be a proper strike witch, and she saw no reason to sugar coat it. It's a dangerous job and people's lives are on the line, so why force something that isn't working.

After the whole thing with Frank and Merlin came to light, I think she still didn't actually care all that much about Merlin as an individual. She did care about her potential when connected with Frank, so by proxy Longstreet was probably more interested in Frank's ability than anything else. Merlin's a nobody, imagine a witch with actual talent in the back seat? What if that wasn't unique to Frank and Merlin? What if you could do that for every steelwing?

I like to think that Longstreet saw the writing on the wall when it comes to witches and strikers versus the next generations of air superiority fighters and the missiles they carry. Alas, she didn't get what she wanted because she failed to address the 'human' element of the equation. To her, I think she felt the bigger picture overrides the feelings of individuals. She sends children off to fight and die, probably has kids of her own on the front line. Her perspective is different.

[x] Just keep the general title. Ice is right, and like you said, it's not everyday you can say you got the title from Imperial nobility

You shake your head, reaching over to put the letter in your carry on bag, in a book so it doesn't get smashed. “I'll just keep the general title. Ice is right, and, like you said, it's not everyday you can say you got the title from Imperial nobility.” You grin at Ice, who sighs.

“Now are you joking about that? I'm not entirely sure I want to let that whole thing into the open yet.” Ice says, looking at you.

You nod. “I'm joking. So is that it?”

Ice nods. “That's all I have for you, yeah.” She pauses, looking up at the wall-mounted clock. “You two had better get going, Matron O'hare said she was leaving around thirteen hundred.”

As you and Katya stand up, she adds “Stay out of trouble, ok?”

Katya nods, grinning. “I will make sure he is well behaved, My tzarina.”

Ice sighs.

The two of you walk quickly down to the hangar, where you're able to pat the wyvern affectionately on the underside of the nose, though neither Merlin nor Kenji are anywhere to be seen. You've already made sure to say something to Merlin- and promised to bring her back something nice- though you're not sure what, just yet.

Outside on the pad, Matron O'hare's helicopter, one of those little civilian bells, is waiting, it's pilots just beginning their pre-start checklists. They wave you onboard and the copilot reaches back, handing you a pair of headsets.

You're just getting them on when Matron O'hare joins you, her own bag- a plain, OD green sea bag- thumps to the chopper's deck. She grins at you, taking a seat across from you, next to Katya. The copilot hands her her own headset, and she plugs it in.

“Nice day for flying, isn't it?”

[x] Nice enough, though I'd be nervous about those clouds out to the west.

“Nice enough” You respond, nodding. “But if it were me, I'd be kinda nervous about those clouds out to the west.”

Matron O'hare looks outside, gazing at the darkened clouds far out to the west, and nods. “They do look kind of nasty. We'll be on the ground long before they get here though, that system isn't supposed to blow in until this evening.”

You snort. “So it'll be hitting us in Paris tomorrow.”

She nods. “It's supposed to intensify too, so tomorrow might be your day to spend in the museums. I'd suggest the Louvre, they have some amazing collections there.”

You nod. “That's probably what we'll end up doing.”

The three of you sit in silence as the blades above start turning, eventually enough so you can see the vibrations rippling through the composite windows.

“Are you anxious to be leaving, Matron?” Katya asks.

O'hare smiles and rocks her hand back and forth. “I kind of am and I'm kind of not. We're leaving a lot unfinished here, even with as much progress as we ended up making.” She says. “Tabitha's theory really helped us get a handle on what we were dealing with.”

Both you and Katya nod as she continues. “But there's plenty to do back home, too. The new generation of witches is going to have to learn to cope with the new realities of war, and we'll have to start picking some of them to come work with Spellcaster.”

“Work with- “ You look at Katya, who shares your confusion. “You don't mean sending them to the front?”

O'hare shakes her head with a laugh. “Oh, oh goodness no. I'm sorry, I just realized how that sounded. No, no. Di-” She shakes her head again, blinking. “Admiral Nixon thought, and I happened to agree, that VF-3 would make an ideal place for our more advanced students to learn from the best. But not while you're at the front, and not even for some time after, I think.”

The chopper takes off as you process the information- you'd be in a training squadron. While you're not entirely opposed to the idea, it isn't were you'd belong. “What about Ice?” You ask.

O'hare shrugs. “We haven't approached her about it, and don't plan to until the war is over anyway. Not all of us are like Matron Longstreet, Frank.”

Don't join the military if you want nice.

Realistically, I'm willing to bet the real problem is that Merlin couldn't handle being told she couldn't be a strike witch. She probably tried to get them to run the tests again, and she was told "Sorry, you just don't have the talent."

If anything I think her fellow students were probably more at fault for Merlin's problems than the Matrons. Teenagers can be remarkably cruel to eachother in social situations. Add actual magic powers to that equation, and base prestige on how "good" you are with magic, and her fellow cadets probably made life hell.

Longstreet of course doesn't help matters from Merlin's perspective, because she probably told her the truth: "You will get people killed in times when your powers would matter most." Neither one could predict what she would eventually become while flying with Frank.
>>
>>33921715
Longstreet feels when?
>>
>>33921715

How did Merlin get into the backseat of Tomcat initially, if you mind me asking?

I've always been kinda curious about that, considering that would probably entail going through the regular USN.
>>
[x] Yeah, but there's not that many matrons I've met I trust. {x}optional addition: But you're one of the few I do

“Yeah, but there's still not that many matrons I've met that I trust.” You say, looking briefly out the window to watch the ground speed by below- one thing choppers do have is they can fly much lower, so even if their airspeed is a fraction of yours, it seems a lot faster. “You're one of the few I do.”

O'hare smiles at the compliment. “Well, thank you, Frank. That means a lot to me, you know. I've tried to be on the level with you, I know not all the other matrons have.”

You shrug. “Oh, I think Longstreet was on the level. She just has a terrible way of getting things done.”

O'hare nods. “That's a common impression of her. She's not the most popular matron to ever sit as headmistress of Annapolis, but she's got connections from her time in southeast asia that make her a powerful political force.”

You nod. “Admiral Nixon told me as much.”

She smiles again. “Did he? They were friends, years ago. I've been led to believe they had a falling out, though, around the turn of the decade. Richard is far more politically savvy than she'll ever be, but he's not a witch.”

“She is lazy.” Katya says, her first spoken words since you left the castle. “There are matrons like this in Russia, too. They are witches, they can get what they want simply because of this. They do not worry about repercussions.”

>>
>>33921784
Maybe through some kind of accelerated program?
Merlin did have magic and technopathy, she just didn't have the raw magic output needed for a jet striker.
>>
O'hare nods. “Exactly. She's set back a lot of goodwill, and probably ruined any chance we had at having a navy-led united sisterhood in the US because of how badly she's alienated a lot of people. The most likley places to form one now are, I don't know.” She sighs, with a shrug. “Maybe California or Seattle, I suppose. There was a united sisterhood in the confederate states, but that's long gone, and after this we can't even try to revive that as a starting point.”

“After this?” You ask. “Barin?”

She shakes her head. “Oh, no, sorry. I mean, after her. No one will listen to her about that kind of thing, and if word got out how badly she'd handled this thing with you and Miss Wells,” She shrugs. “I'm not sure even she could survive that.”

IIRC, witches are not strictly military, and covens hold a lot of say about what witches do in a given military. There's a lot of historical reasons for that, a lot of which I am too lazy to really look up at the moment.

If witches were held entirely to the beck and call of the military or a given government, you can bet there wouldn't be things like witch privilege. They'd have a lot less say in what sorts of programs a witch could participate in.

I don't think anyone ought to 'sympathize' with Longstreet, but I like to think she's a bitch with purpose. Her purpose, as far as she's concerned, means far more than the feelings of one little girl.

From her perspective, Frank Bishop and Miss Wells are both directly responsible for setting back US covens possibly by decades, which isn't just a set back to US witches, but to the United States. She's not going to mind her career coming to an end as much as she's bothered by what she's seeing them get away with.

[x] So why don't you make a move? You've always done right by us, we'll work with you.

“So why don't you make a move?” You supply. “I mean, you've always done right by us, we'll work with you.”

O'hare looks at you for a minute, and you're about to repeat yourself when she responds with a shake of her head. “I still don't think it would work. And it might not change anything anyway, even if someone was able to force her out of active participation, she'd still be an old, and powerful matron, and could make life difficult for the witch that forced her out.”

“So it is not worth the risk?” Katya asks, and O'hare shakes her head again.

“No, it's not. We've done fine without a united sisterhood in the US, I think we'll be fine without one for a while longer yet. But,” She says, nodding. “Don't think I'll forget the vote of confidence, either. Who knows, maybe I'll get back and find out her position is much worse than I think it is.” She shrugs.

The three of you continue your conversation as you fly over London proper, a few hundred feet above the tops of the tallest buildings still. Your practiced eye makes out the flitting shapes of witches a couple miles away- who they are or what they're doing you can't tell, but they don't appear to be closing, so you put them out of your mind.

Before long, your pilots begin their descent into the helo pattern at London Heathrow. O'hare smiles. “It's been a pleasure talking with you two. Have fun in Paris!”

You both nod, removing your headsets and walking a short distance to a shuttle van waiting for you. The van takes you to the terminal, where you're able to check in, and before long you're on a twin turboprop aircraft, settling back in your seat for a short ride to Paris via Charles de Gaulle airport.

Titan you say? Get on my level heretic! I attempted to make my own Titan in my days, It failed due to accident shattering it. Pic looks close to what i was aiming for.

Katya takes a window seat, leaving you with the isle. Thankfully, there aircraft isn't too crowded, just a few passengers rattling around in an airframe clearly meant to handle more.

You end up waiting in the pattern longer than you'd have liked- as it turns out, a heavy out in front developed last-second issues on one of their powerplants, and closed the runway for an aborted takeoff. You manage to contain your irritation- better on the ground than in the air, especially in a jumbo like that. You're still a couple hours behind schedule when you do finally take off, flying south east over the channel and France.

The tires of the aircraft hardly bump when they hit the runway- not a bad showing from your pilot, though to be fair, this thing is probably lighter, and certainly slower, than the Wyvern is. Stepping into the terminal, you chance a look outside- seems you've outrun the weather, at least briefly.

With only carry on luggage to worry about, you and Katya are able to clear the gate easily, though you're surprised by the sight of a nondescript looking man holding a sign for Lt. Cdr. Bishop and Lt. Litvyak.

You'd be slightly paranoid about it, except for the pair of uniformed policemen with him.

>I like to think she's a bitch with purpose

Sadly, if that's the case, she has blinders on, and is essentially useless because she can't comprehend how to work with people. Even bitches with purpose know how to play the "game", and Longstreet clearly...doesn't. She's nothing more than a thug who is exactly what Katya said. Longstreet is a lazy matron who gets things simply because she's a witch.

Longstreet is not any sort of purposeful leader, evidenced by her alienating just about anyone that could possibly have helped her goal become a reality.

At the end of the day, regardless of anything Frank or Merlin do, Longstreet has done more longterm damage to the US witches than anyone else, and has probably "gotten away" with more horrible things than anyone suspects...

Oh, totally. Her reach far exceeds her grasp in the political arena, for any number of reasons. It isn't as though she doesn't have allies or people who look up to her though. After Frank left with the crate, the mood at the academy had gotten noticeable cooler. She's probably a better teacher to those who cut it than she is a politician.

Longstreet probably feels like she's "running out of time" to make a difference. She was a combat witch back in late 60s, a matron in recent years, and she knows she's running out of people in high places who will listen to her. What she wants is to effectively put US witches "on top", independent from the shit that goes down among UK matrons. That's a pretty big shift in policy that she feels, for whatever reason, to be extremely important to US interests.

I wouldn't say she's a "lazy" because she exercises her witch privilege to get the things she wants, they all do. She just seriously lacks the social finesse.

You indicate the small group to Katya with a quick jerk of your head, and she nods, agreeing with you- Brigitte did say she was calling in some favors to look after you, and it'd be rude, not to mention probably futile, to try and avoid them.

“Commander Bishop?” the man asks, as you walk up.

“That's me.” You respond, offering your hand. He shakes it, then nods.

“It's an honor to meet you, sir. Commander Laroux spoke very highly of you, and she is not easily impressed. Come, let us get out of here.”

“I'm afraid I must mention some news you will not like.” He says, walking down to the car. “There are some generals who would like to speak to you while you are here.” He turns back with a grin. “However, you are here with an incredibly beautiful woman, so if you wish to avoid them, we can do this.”

“Flattery will get you nowhere.” Katya says flatly, causing the man to grin wider.

“Mais non! I speak only the truth.” He says. “We will provide a car for you, with a driver, one of our best men. Do you have a hotel yet?”

You shake your head. “No, we only had travel arrangements sorted.”

He nods understandingly as you step out into the street and see a pair of cars, with a few more police around them. Damn, Brigitte wasn't kidding when she said they'd take care of you. “Do you have any preference?”

She's lazy because she doesn't learn from her mistakes. It's why I consider her nothing more than a thug.

Truthfully, I'd be surprised if she has much pull left. As it is, I would guess that the mood at the academy is more about Longstreet spreading disinformation and lies, in addition to whatever cronies she has built up over the years. After all, the academy is Longstreet's base of power, so to speak.

Considering her almost complete lack of political savvy and inability to work with others, I fully expect her to be used as a fallguy/scapegoat at some point by someone highly placed that she incorrectly assumes is backing her.

Either that, or past actions of hers (judging by her nature) may come to light that force her out. She just doesn't seem to understand the political game well enough, and has likely been lasting solely on the basis of being a witch in addition to whatever past achievements she may have had during wartime.

The British Matrons aren't much better, they more or less ran roughshod over any sort of boundaries specifically to nail down not just Longstreet, but US matrons as a whole. Oh, I agree. I just don't think Longstreet is any good at it, and worse, she doesn't know how to work with people at all.

I always think of it like what that US politician in The Hunt for Red October said - "I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies I'm stealing their lollipops. But it also means I keep my options open."

The British matrons might not be much better, but even they work with people to further their aims, unlike Longstreet.

Maybe Longstreet has been trading on past achievements so far to stay above water? I can't imagine she'll last much longer if a shift in US witch policy happens (which it should).

You don't really think the British matrons kept their options open by trying to screw over US covens? If anything, it's only going to lead to more jousting in the future as both groups continue to try and get one over on the other.

It may not be under Longstreet, but ironically her getting screwed over, by a Pilot, at the behest of a foreign matron, might be just the thing the US matrons need to get their own houses in order.

Oh, I think it kept their options open quite well. I think the US matrons getting their houses in order is EXACTLY what (some) of the British matrons were secretly hoping for, even if they would like to stay ahead of the US (obviously). Both sides need each other, and I really don't see the US covens getting screwed over by this in the long term.

Short term? Maybe.

Longstreet getting "screwed" over is more a function of her being unable to work with people and damaging US witches/covens than a singular pilot who is not even a witch.

As far as the jousting? That will always happen. Unless the US and Britain become one nation, no matter how close they are, that will always go on.

>It may not be under Longstreet

I'd be surprised if she's still involved when the playing field changes. She's hurting all sides involved, and I'd see her as perhaps an unwilling, but very acceptable sacrifice in the eyes of the higher ups.

[x] Somewhere centrally located. We'd like to do some sightseeing without driving all over.

“Somewhere centrally located.” You say, getting into the indicated car with Katya. “We'd like to do some sightseeing, and we don't want to have to drive all over if we can help it.”

He nods, and smiles again. “Oui, I have just the place. One moment, please.”

He pulls out a cell phone- this is honestly one of the first times you've seen one, and punches a few numbers in, then has a short conversation in French with whomever is on the other end. He hangs up a minute later and grins. “Excellent news! The Hotel de Crillon has a suite available!”

“I'm pretty sure I've seen that place, somewhere.” You remark, somewhat drily. You're pretty sure you saw it on lifestyles of the rich and famous.

His grin gets wider. “Even better news! The hotel has a long agreement with us about our American guests! We will consider it part of our favor to madam Laroux to cover your hotel fees.”

“Part of-” you look at him. “There's no way those aren't incredibly high.”

He shrugs. “Where is the cost when the government pays for it?” He laughs again. “I am sure they will make it back in taxes anyway!”

Ehehe, I can understand ya there. Setsuko Ohara reminds me of Katya sometimes, see.

Though a good Namco Sound Team track would fit her as well, but I can't come up with anything right now...

Hush, my good man! We must act in accordance with the atmosphere!
Now, where is my manservant? I have yet to acquire the monocle I have asked for...

Here comes the snow.
Mission 6 felt a little wrong without the Pixy fight, but getting to pull the run on Avalon and fight over B7R all weekend made me really feel the <Return of the Demon Lord>.

Ice isn't here.

Perhaps we'll be honored by one of those revolutions the French love. Also pretty sure the first treaty between France and the Untied States was signed in the building.

Would the witch covens have sided with the royalists or the republicans?

Or would it have been a point of schism, I wonder?

I didn't mean right now we're with her. In the social/relationship sense.
>>
>>33926315
Quite the question, sir.

I believe there would have been a great tear in the French covens if that were the case. Since the witches come from all backgrounds it's very plausible there were witches on both sides.

Witch Cosette anyone?

>GLA witches

Middle Eastern witches are a thing.

Fun fact, due to necessity, there are quite a few middle eastern witches out there that are Tarin-tier. Just be glad they're too dirt poor to afford decent strikers.
