I am Itsukuma Masami, and I'm currently watching two of my best friends stare each other down. The tension is thick in the air, along with the smell of cooked food and the sound of people chattering outside the booth that the Cooking Club has set up to recruit more members.

I finish eating the rest of my food and throw away the paper plate,
"Okay Aiko! Let's go check out some other clubs. It's kind of stuffy in here."

She's caught off guard by me dragging her away, her resolve falters
"Fine, fine. Maeda, I'll talk to you later." Aiko says, gaining her balance.
"Hmph, fine. Take care Masami!" Maeda doesn't seem very happy, but she can at least put on a good face when she wants to.

We make our way past the crowd in front of the gymnasium, where the various club booths were setup. Aiko tugs on my shirt to stop me.

"Masami, wait, I was thinking about what Mae said, I should probably go apologise for what I did." Guilt drips from her voice
"Oh, you're going to apologize to Mae?"
She snaps back, "No! Of course not! She would hold that over my head forever. I was actually thinking about the Theatre club. I said something kind of mean to someone I know in there. I'll catch up with you later." She turns and walks back into the Gymnasium.

Wow, she's actually showing some remorse for being mean! That's improvement, I think.

Well, I'm alone now, I should probably check out the rest of the clubs quickly while she's not around. I think they might be soured by her presence.

Gazing around the various crowds, I'm not really seeing anyone I know around. Certainly not anyone else who isn't busy with club stuff of their own. I should probably head to the clubs that I was-

Wait. There's someone standing in the crowd who CLEARLY does not belong. He practically towers over the other school students. They keep walking by and chatting like he isn't even there.

Plus, he's staring right at me.

Aww, I didn't want to deal with weirdos today...

At least he's out here in public, I don't have to worry about him trying anything here. Cautiously, I walk up to him.

A high-pitched, almost girly voice greets me as I approach.
"Ooh, Good day Priestess. How lovely it is to see you here. I was almost thinking that you wouldn't notice little ol' me."
I'm not in the mood for this,
"Sock it, who are you supposed to be and why are you watching me? Going to try and kidnap me like yesterday?"

He puts one hand over his heart in an exaggerated manner
"Priestess, your words hurt me so. I'm not some kind of ill-mannered brute that would force a little girl to go with him if they didn't want to."

"Then why are you here? You should know that I don't have any business to discuss with you." Arms cross, Glare.

He polishes his hand a bit on his coat,
"I just thought we could maybe talk about things. Yesterday, I don't think, that guy that said he would bring you back, um." He's studdering.
He stops and thinks for a moment, "er, 'ar', um, 'Arget', I think that's his name? I can't pronounce his name. The point is! I don't think he gave you a very fair impression of us or why we wanted to speak with you. I just came by to show you that we're actually a big, happy family that would love to meet their newest member."

"Sorry, but I already have a family. A family that wouldn't try to kidnap me during school hours."
He laughs, "Oh? Then you think about how we feel, then. Our precious Priestess taken away from us in broad daylight with no word or warning from the person who did it. And now we simply get told that we can't see you. Have you ever considered how we feel for a moment?"

My voice becomes dry, "No. No I really haven't considered that. I'm not even sure if you things can actually feel."
"Oh, that's a low blow, Priestess."

"Maybe if you, whatever you are, had introduced yourselves back when I was born, like Mom did, none of this would have happened. Maybe you should ask your boss to come see me in person if it's so important to him."

He's quick to respond, "I'm sure he would love to do that. But, he's a very busy man."

I'm not taking that for an answer,
"If he's too busy to come see me, then he's too busy for me to go visit him."

I pick up my bag and start walking.
He shouts from behind me, "I'll be around if you change your mind."
"DON'T COUNT ON IT! AND DON'T FOLLOW ME, EITHER!" I shout back.

But he's already gone.

I should probably just go home after I check out these last two clubs.

Walking back in the direction I came from earlier, I pass by the theatre, with a very angry looking girl inside, sweeping the stage and ranting to herself. There's no one else in here.

I should at least go in, I'm partially responsible for the mess after all.

"Hello?" I ask
The girl on stage nearly jumps out of her skin, "OH Oh. Hi. Here to join the Theatre club?"

Then she recognizes me.

"Hey, weren't you that girl that was with Aiko earlier?"
"Well. Um. Yes."
"Humph!"

She goes back to sweeping.

I need to know something, "What is the deal between you and Aiko? What happened?"
She adjusts her glasses and sets the broom down,
"Aiko was one of the best stagehands we ever had. She told me she would be signing up for Theatre next semester. Then I find out that she tells that to EVERYONE. And it's just. not. fair!"

She sits on the edge of the stage with her head buried in her lap.
"Was it something I did? Was I not a good enough club leader for her? I asked if she wanted to be leader instead but she always said she liked what she was doing..."

Wasn't Aiko going to do something about this?
"Aiko didn't apologize to you?"

"What do you mean? After she acted like a jerk to me earlier, I came in here and tried to sweep the anger away..."

That means Aiko is wandering around the Gymnasium searching for a girl that's already back in the theatre to apologise to.

"Um.. Excuse me, Err."
"Otaka. Aina Otaka." She says through a muffled voice.
"Right, Otaka, What does the theatre club actually to?"

She sighs, "Exactly what you think, we do theatre and plays. We have some who are designated as actors, some who are stagehands, sometimes the professional actors come in and coach us. We even have our own costume designers."

"Wow, really?"

"Yeah..." she doesn't sound much happier about all of this.
"We used to have a sewing club, but all of their projects was just making costumes for theatre, so eventually they merged with us. If you're interested in something, you'll probably find it in this club."

She lays back onto the stage, "If only Aiko could have found something she was interested in."
I grab her hand, "Don't give up hope yet! Aiko was looking for you earlier!"
Her face perks up, "Oh, she was?"

"Yes! She said that she felt terrible for how she treated you and wanted to apologize! Now is a good time to go say all those things you wanted to tell her!"

Her face is beaming, her expression turns from sad, to thoughtful, to completely estatic.
She leaps up from the stage and blissfully skips over to the door, spinning around briefly before leaving,
"Thank you, Thank you so much, mysterious stranger!"
"It's Masami, and if you want to thank me, then save that attitude for Aiko!"

She giggles and hops through the doorway. My work here is done.

I leave the theatre and shut the door behind me, I notice that there are students walking with pieces and parts of the cooking set that I saw earlier in the Gym.

I think I've seen most of the places I want to see, except the cooking club, but I can always ask Mae about that later. I don't want to hang around school any longer than I have to when-

That's when I notice, out of the corner of my eye.
Him.
He's laying on the roof of a building, seemingly bathing in the Noon-day sunlight. I'm not sure if they can even sunbathe, but he's certainly trying.

He lazily tilts his head and looks over in my direction, and waves.

I thought I told him not to follow me.

"Excuse me?" a voice from in front of me rings out.

A girl with brown hair, wearing the same Chef's outfit that I saw her in before, is standing before me.

"Are you lost?" She asks, head tilting slightly.
"No I-"

Wait, he's still watching me.

"Yes, I got kind of turned around, can you show me to the cooking club?"
"Oh! I would love to! Come on, right this way."

He rolls his head back over as I walk away.

"So.."

"So what is the cooking club? I got a taste of your work back in the gym, and it was very good!"

She laughs, "Thank you, it's a special recipe I have."

She wistfully looks upward, "The cooking club is the largest club in the school. It's easy to guess why that is, everyone needs to eat. Plus the club seems to grow every time we have a cooking contest like the one we had back in the gym."

That was a cooking contest? It looked more like they were giving away food so people would join the club.

"Um, what kind of cooking do you do?"
"Almost everying."

I'm not sure that answers my question, but okay!

We arrive to a room with the door propped open, people in chef's clothing mull around inside.

"We're still cleaning things up, so I can't exactly let you in at the moment. Especially if any of the surfaces are hot."

She reaches into her pocket and takes out a pamphlet.

"Fill out the back and turn it in if you're interested. I hope to see you around!"

You stop her, "Oh wait, before you go, is Maeda in this club, too?"

"She most certainly is, she has her own club activities to look after, so she isn't in here right now. You can probably find her in the inner courts, that's where they practice Kendo."

"Oh, well thank you, What was your name again?"
"Sawai, Itsuko Sawai." She says.

"Oh, I'm Masami Itsukuma, it's been a real-"

She hears someone shout something from the back of the room and walks away from me. Merely waving as she disappears from sight.

That was kind of short, I was hoping to find out more about the club, but it seems to be really busy.

Well, Onward to Kendo. I don't see that guy following me, and I'm sure Maeda would have some advice as to what I should do next about him.

Walking to the indoor courts, I start hearing the sound of students sparring and wooden sticks clashing as I approach.

Opening one of the doors, I notice Maeda sitting on the side of a marked-off area. Two boys inside the area spar with wooden sticks.

I walk up to Maeda and sit down next to her. Just in time for one of the boys to knock the other out of the marked-off area.

Maeda jumps to her feet, "Score! nicely done"

She shakes hands with one of the boys and walks back up to me.

"Aiko didn't follow you, did she?"

"What? No."
"Oh thank god." she sighs.

She slumps back down onto the mat we were sitting on.
"I sometimes wish I could just do recruitment tomorrow and leave the door locked, but as you can tell, this club doesn't get many members to begin with."

There's a shout that sounds like it came from down the hall, followed by a chorus of applauding and cheers.

"Unlike my BROTHER'S CLUB which gets new people all the time." She sighs again.

"Um, so what is the Kendo club?" I ask
"Oh, you know what Kendo is, right?"
"Well, yes."
"Then, it's a Kendo Club."
"That's not- what I meant was 'What is it that the Kendo club does at the school?'"
She looks, confused?
"..Kendo?" she meekly responds, is she expecting me to ask something different?

"You don't get many members here? How come?"
"People don't like it very much, it's not as 'interesting' compared to the punching clubs for meatheads and-"
She cuts herself off, laughing lightly.

"So, were you thinking of joining?" She says, loosening her posture
"Maybe. I want to see all the clubs first, before I do."
"Just remember, Masami. Don't do what Aiko does."

Those are words to live by.

"No, but there was something I wanted to talk to you about in private."
Everyone else had already left the room, so I guess this is as private as it's going to get.

I sigh, "There's another soldier following me. This one doesn't seem as aggressive as the last one, but it still wants me to come with him all the same."

Mae suddenly tenses up, and looks mad.
"..I'm going to kill it."

"I would love for you to, but I don't want you getting hurt either."

I then proceed to tell her what happened after she had left. The black stain on the card coming off and attacking. The new form I received from that card, and how this new soldier says the last one was merely a 'brute'.

She looks lost in thought for a moment,
"That's serious. But I'm not going to turn my back on you just because it could be dangerous."
"Thanks, Mae."
"Listen, after school is probably when he's going to try and attack. Come and get me, Aiko and I will walk you home, okay?"
"Thank you, Maeda."

She PULLS ME INTO A HUG for some reason,

"Uh? Maeda?"
"Hmm? I thought you were scared by that guy."

Now that she mentions it, I don't feel that scared by him or his presence. Definitely not as scared as yesterday.

"..Anyways, I'll come get you after class when I'm ready to go home."
We both stand up and walk to the door.

Parting ways, I head to the room where all the noise is coming from. There's another chorus of cheers being emitted from a door as I approach.

Sliding it open, I see two areas on the inside, One of them has only a half-dozen students sitting around a small perimeter drawn with white tape, talking.
But the other side of hte room is dominated by a large boxing ring. There are currently two people in right now, exchanging blows.

Ryouta is standing outside of the boxing ring. With Ken'ichi being one of the people sitting around the small perimeter, talking.

I walk up to Ryouta. He responds the second he sees me,

"Does it look like she's with me?" I ask, it should be pretty clear right now that I don't.
"Oh, Hah! I should have noticed. Welcome to the dojo, Masami. Were you thinking of joining one of our esteemed martial arts clubs?"

Okay, now is time to ask.
"Well, actually, I was thinking about what happened yesterday, and how you were able to fight, like you do."
"'Like I do-', Oh."

It suddenly clicks for him, that I'm referring to the magic fisticuffs that he can do.

"I noticed that everyone can do that, except for me. And I'm kind of worried about 'them' coming back. So, um. Could you teach me how to defend myself like that, too?"
This is so embarrassing.

"That would be great! I was just thinking that you probably weren't here to become a boxer. But, er."

He leans in closer,
"Let's talk more about this later, I can't really teach you that sort of thing right now."

"Okay! Great!"

Really, just having a LITTLE bit of his punching ability would be enough.

"Anything else?"
"Yeah, what does Ken'ichi do?"
"Judo." He replies, looking a little disgusted. "It would be a great club too if the leader of it spent any time at all recruiting, or doing anything really."
"Oh, he's not the leader of it?"
I look over to Ken'ichi, he gives a very lazy wave in my direction.
"Ken? Pfft, no. Him and the actual leader have been having a race to see who can be the most useless member possible. The leader of the Judo club is that guy sleeping on the chairs in the corner."

Sure enough, there's a guy with jet-black hair stretched across three folding chairs.

"Now that you've talked to me, you've basically seen the only real club in this room. Is there anything else?"

"Oh wait, I just remembered something!"
"What?" Ryouta asks

"I was going to go visit Kaori, but I don't think I have the time to do it now."
"It's probably just as well, most of her club members are night students. Probably because they can use her voodoo club as a chance to sleep and still earn credit."

"Wait, I thought it was the occult club?" I ask
"Occult, Voodoo, same difference. She is able to do that stuff because that's her ability, but I don't think anyone in that room is actually suddenly able to use magic like she does just because they're in a club. "

That's a good point, her club may only work for her. I didn't think of that.

"Besides, you got weeks to decide, get back to class and think all this over."

He turns away from me, "Okay! Wrap it up everyone!"
The students in and around the ring file out. The delinquents slowly start to stand up and stretch.

Ken'ichi walks past me on his way out the door, now is a good time to at least be thankful for his help.
"Oh, Ken'ichi, Thanks for your help the other day."

He looks taken off guard by this, but quickly recovers.
"The name is just 'Ken'. And don't think too much of it."

He walks out the door with several others following behind him. Looking at my phone, it's time for me to get to class as well.

The courtyard is clear of him, he's not resting on top of any roof. He's seemingly no where. He seemed bold enough last time to where if he wanted to talk, he would have no problems just walking up and striking up a conversation.

Maybe he just got bored of waiting and went home. I hope.

I go through the courtyard to the gazebo where the student council usually hangs out. Sure enough, Aiko is sitting at the booth with her bag in hand.

"Oh good, Masami, I was getting kind of tired of listening to Mae over here getting angry about me having fun today. So dear Maeda, I'll see you tomo-"
"Um. Actually Aiko, she's coming with us." I say to her

Her face goes from cheerful to kind of frightened, Mae only puts a sinister grin on as she grabs her bag and we begin walking the way to my home.

Aiko and Mae are arguing, mostly Mae telling Aiko that she needs to stop this because she keeps hurting people's feelings every semester when she acts like she owns the whole world. Aiko simply laughs it off, like it's all in good fun.

Though, I'm not too sure if it actually is.

We get to the corner of the street outside the school, when suddenly.

Him.

"Hello Priestess, and Priestess' friends. How was class today?"

Aiko and Maeda drop their bags, both immediately assume a combat stance.

"Now, now, I'm not here to fight. Besides, there are three of you and only one of me."
He polishes his hand on his coat again,
"I'm just here to see that my dearest niece makes it home okay."

That bring my blood to a boil.
"I am NOT your niece!"

"Your words, like daggers to my heart. I was wanting to ask Priestess again which family she wished to go home to."
"I'M NOT GOING HOME WITH YOU. FULL. STOP."
"Okay, then I shall make my leave."

Aiko and Mae look confused, rightfully so.

Mae is the one that responds first, "Wait, you're not going to try and take her?"
"Of course not!" the beast responds, "Where would my manners be if I tried something like that."

Mae's posture loosens, but Aiko isn't convinced,
"Why would you come all the way here and then not even try to take what you came here for?"

He laughs, "Because respecting someone's wishes is what family does for one another."

For the last time, "I AM NOT YOUR FAMILY!"

"Oh, but priestess, what I was saying wasn't metaphorical."
What is he talking about.

"You are, quite literally, my family. You and I, we are born from one in the same."

Aiko and Mae stop what they are doing, and only stare blankly at him.

"Oh? Did she never tell you two? That's not a nice thing to do to your friends, Priestess."

There's a tear rolling down my cheek.

News to me. Mom never told me and I never asked.
>>
>>33833473
This, since I can't think of anything.
>>
>>33833416
>I don't even know if what you are saying is true! And even if we are, that doesn't make you my family, Mom is my only family because she gave me a home and her care and love! *cry*

Actually how about this, discuss this for a bit, I think that will be my last post for the night. I'm beginning to feel tired.

Thanks for the thread everyone. I'll open up next thread with your responses.

So

How was it this time?
>>
>>33833416
How am I supposed to know what I am if everyone avoids explaining the past?
>>
>>33833519
it was good, it definitely felt faster and we got the plot rolling a bit more it seems. Or at least something is happening.
>>
>>33833519
Considering the amount of posts needed to get to this point. Pretty good.
Of course the thread itself is rather short, but if you're tired thats how it must be.

Thanks for running in either case, definitly made progress on the pacing and focusing on the relevant bits.

And
the plot thickens!
>>
>>33833519
Pretty good. We went at a nice pace and ended with some plot, yay.

>>33833416
Might as well mention being born [three?] days ago. Full disclosure time, you know?

Good, good.

That is a massive relief to me. I was ready to drastically re-structure the quest if I couldn't manage to pick up the pace. Going as far as maybe even ending it if it was just going to be one big chore for everyone to read.

>>33833563
Ah, good. Yeah it's a short thread because of a late start time. I'll try to start earlier next time.

>>33833582
>Pretty good. We went at a nice pace and ended with some plot, yay.

I'm really relieved that I was actually able to do it.

Whew. Thanks everyone. Your input last thread really helped me out. I'll keep trying to improve with pacing and runtime. I just hope it isn't too late with how far into the quest we are right now.
>>
>>33833632
When do you plan to run next thread, if I may ask?
>>
As for next runtime, I'm thinking of either Tomorrow (No super hero time to distract me tomorrow. So I may be bored out of my mind) or Sunday. I got to see how things play out.

Anyway, I'm archiving the thread, thanks for playing everyone!
>>
>>33833697
Start date will be listed on twitter, I think I need to list start times more often.
>>

>Mom is my only family because she gave me a home and her care and love!
This is just asking it to reply that their side never got a chance to show what a great home they ahve and how much care and love they can lavish.
>>
>>33833697
You'll have to count me out for the entire weekend, unless you start later again. Good luck though.
>>
Thanks for running.
>>
>>33833758
Ah, too bad. Best of luck over the weekend.

Also, archived
>>
>>33833757
But they didn't. If mom wouldn't have been there, they certainly hadn't been ther either. They can say all they want about how they totally would have, they didn't.
>>
>>33833823
Only because Mom didn't let them. Weren't they doing a good thing by respecting her wishes at the time?

even if they did disrespect them a day later
