You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After making plans to hang out with Emilio later rtoday, you made your way down to the dining hall to meet up with Marianne. And as expected, she's all dolled up in what passes for her "casual" attire.

What you -weren't- expecting was that Luciana would be showing up for breakfast, much less with her fiery hair dyed jet black (or maybe it's been magiced black?). You almost didn't recognize her when you first saw her... which is the entire point of her doing so, so you guess that it was a success.

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

"I'd have thought you'd have noticed that Marianne's middle is every bit as flowery as mine is the first time you heard it," Luciana says, shrugging.
"Maybe he's not into flowers, Luciana," Marianne replies.
"Umm, that's not it," you reply.
"Hm?" Luciana turns to you.
"I don't think I've ever actually heard her full name before."

Upon hearing that, both Luciana and Marianne stare at you as if you've gone crazy.

"You mean to tell me that you've been serving as Marianne's bodyguard for an entire month now but you don't even know her full name?" Luciana gasps. "I mean, she's the Crown Princess of the entire kingdom!"
"Then again, I doubt he's had much reason to get to know him before he took on this job," Marianne sighs. "And I don't think I properly introduced myself back when we first met, either."
"Ah, I see," Luciana says, crossing her arms and nodding her head. "It's because of your poor manners."
"Shut up."

"Umm, I really don't think it's -that- big a deal," you say with a nervous smile. "So how about we just wait for our food to get here, and-"
"No no no no," Luciana shakes her head. "That won't do at all. There's like... protocol reasons and that sort of thing, you really should know."

With much grandeur, Luciana clears her throat.

"My dear Reinhold, you are under the employ of the Crown Princess of Granache, Marianne Primevère Granache," Luciana declares.
"Yes, yes," Marianne sighs. "And now you know my horrible secret."
"Oh, but there -is- a secret behind her name!" she giggles.

As Marianne realizes what her best friend is implying, she starts to sink down into her chair.

"Not this again..."

"What secret?" you ask. "Is it something bad?"
"It's not bad," Luciana replies with a wide grin. "in fact I think it's rather cute!"
"Please ignore her," Marianne groans, completely slumped into her chair. You've never seen her like this before, it kind of makes you forget that she's a Princess at all.
"C'mon, don't be like that!" Luciana nudges her friend with her elbow, but she doesn't move from her inactive state. "Maybe one day me and Reinhold will have a story like that! I mean, I wish I had a story for my name past the light and flower themes..." she sighs.

"Whatever, I don't even care anymore," Marianne mumbles.
"Very well!" Luciana claps her hands. "Since we no longer have any opposition to me doing so..."

Once again, Luciana clears her throat in an exaggerated manner.

"According to what my mother told me, the King used to give Marianne's mother all kinds of different flowers when they were courting," Luciana says. "And after they finally got married and had her, there was a big fuss over what her middle name would be. Sir Vincent said that it should be some kind of rose, but Uncle Gregory said that it should be something that matched her hair color..."

"...they tried asking her mother, but she didn't really care what the middle name was since she got to pick Marianne's first name," Luciana continues. "But Uncle Gregory's suggestion gave the King an idea, and he declared that Marianne's middle name would be 'Primevère' after the primrose. But not just -any- primrose, you see... his favorite of that type."
"Oh God," Marianne groans, covering her face with her hands.
"The -Francisca- Primrose," Luciana points her finger in the air. "You know... named for the axe," she says with a wicked grin.

.........now you understand why Marianne finds this story so embarrassing.

"I mean, isn't that just ADORABLE?" Luciana giggles. "Her father even found a way to fit his love of axes into the naming tradition of his daughter!"
"You're not going to find it so funny when Reinhold decides to name all of -your- children after swords," Marianne grumbles.

You decide not to say anything in response, instead just giving a nervous chuckle while Luciana teases and prods and taunts her best friend until the servants finally come out with your food. It seems that Marianne's maids must have told the cooking staff that Luciana and Takamaru were here as well, as enough trays were brought out for everyone.

And of course, today's breakfast is pancakes. Truly a wonderful way to start out the day.

Catching up on this quest, just read #120 where Rein kisses Luci

Rein and Luci are perfect for each other because they both seem like assholes at this point.

While you concentrate on your delicious delicious food, the girls go on about Marianne's poor diet, the prospect of playing with Citrine's baby once she gives birth, how many children Luciana wants, and many many other things that neither you nor Takamaru really want to be privy to. You actually end up needing to get a second helping of pancakes in order to have something to keep your attention off of what they're talking about.

Luckily, the girl talk eventually comes to an end and the four of you begin the not-too-long trek to the front gate of the castle.

>Considering that Nico could probably be a very good mage and swordie if she tried I say it's a fair trade.

I can see Nico coming round to her senses on those things given enough time, maybe not swording but probably magic. I mean, knighthood, Grandpa's Lance and some knighted-grandpa's-lance adventures can only be her end-game goal for so long and Nico doesn't seem the type who can be too content when not working towards something.
Her Mom's a mage, her Dad's a swordmage her grandpa probably used magic (I think), seems like with her "I can get a knighthood on lance alone" out of the way, she might reconsider taking up magic again after some time.

Speaking of Karel, I think a good way for her to strengthen her relationship with Emelio would be to reveal her identity to him. It's one hell of a secret, so telling him would show how much trust she's willing to place in Emelio. Of course, this would (somewhat) change how Emelio sees her. Marianne and Luciana continue to chat about nothing in particular as your little group continues down the hallways... until a bunch of guards goes running by, at least.

This really makes me question how profitable being a bandit can really be when you have super-badasses running around.

Plus how can a country this size with that many knights have ANY bandits?

"Whoa, far be it from me to edge into someone else's turf," Sir Anatole says, backing away from Luciana in a most cautious manner. "Congrats on that, I guess."
"Er..." Luciana mumbles, blushing profusely, "...thank you, I guess..."
"Anyways," Arnaud says, clearing his throat, "I was actually looking for you, Princess."
"Eh?" Marianne turns to him. "What for?"
"The subject of the messenger's letter appears to be of a great deal of importance, so your father felt that it would be good for you to have you along for when he actually speaks to him..."
"Wha-" Marianne stammers. "But we were just about to go out into the city, and-" she turns to you and Luciana with a look that makes you feel absolutely HORRIBLE. "Y... yes, I understand..." she says, now completely drained of all her prior energy.
"Er, I'm sure that your father would understand if you had prior plans," Arnaud says, immediately taking pity on her. "It was just an idea."
"No," she shakes her head. "I'm the Princess and I have responsibilities..."

Then she turns to you and Luciana.

"You can go on ahead to the carriage and tell Nicolette and Melanie that I won't be coming along," Marianne says.
"But you were-" Luciana stammers.
"It's okay, we can always go out some other time."

I always imagined Granache being the size of the united kingdom of the netherlands since that broke up into the modern kingdom of the netherlands and the kingdom of the Belgium

modern Netherlands = Granache
Belgium = Marconetti

>>

It's not as though this doesn't concern Luciana (and sort of us) as well, so staying behind wouldn't be so bad.

If it doesn't take long, we can head out slightly later, and if it does, it means we're not going to have to hear the whole long story a second time later on.

And besides, even if we end up leaving slightly later and meeting up with them in town, Melanie and Nicolette are going to be glad to have a bit of time to themselves.

>>33813096
Change "Luciana" with "Violette" and I'll support this

Wasn't a word-for-word dialogue suggestion, but sure, making sure not to slip up and blow her cover is probably worth keeping in mind.

Marianne decided it would be worth using Luciana's alias in front of this guy, so we might as well respect that choice. She wouldn't've done it for absolutely no reason.

And Marianne was really looking forward to this, too...

"I -am- your bodyguard and all, would you like it if I stayed here with you?" you ask. "I mean, this was your trip to begin with."
"Yes," Luciana nods. "We can always go out some other day, it's not like I have anything resembling a schedule to keep to..."
"No," Marianne shakes her head. "You two go on ahead with Melanie and Nicolette. Things like this can easily take half a day or more depending on what they need to talk about, and I'll be with Father so I won't need you to be right there with me."
"But still, I wouldn't feel right if-"
"I mean it," she closes her eyes. "Have fun in my place, and say hi to your sister for me. Okay?"

Here is an interesting quandary, thread.

See, to get a rank-up, we need to be pushy about this. We need to insist that she is the biggest concern of our day. Running off with our girlfriend is the easy thing to do, and therefore hurts her the most.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, running off with our girlfriend offers girlfriend points. She is what we'll be spending our life with, and she's a princess too

This entire decision is duty vs friendship. Also the option to walking her to her father's place is just going to bring up the same decision again in a few story posts.

Consider it.

Rank-ups still matter though, she's still our friend and we probably won't be able to help her any more if she doesn't open up to us.

Unless dying alone and distant from the world is how you want her ending to be. Is that what you want?
>>
>>33813380

Accompanying her to Thierri is a nice compromize. We could also get her something nice for when we come back, as morale support.
>>
>yfw it's all keikaku so that Marianne doesn't get to be third wheel and we get our foursome
>>
>>33813326
>at least me walk you to where your father is
At least a little bit of dignity as a guard.

That, and >>33813357

>>33813363
Given
>"And also buy up a bunch of their pastries," you say, giving her a thumbs-up.
>"And especially buy up a bunch of their pastries," she nods.
we're at least bringing back something from the Wilhelms'.

Not sure about picking up everything from the book store as well; it's efficient, sure, but doing everything she would've done in town like we're running errands for her removes a lot of what she goes into town for to begin with.

There's nothing keeping her from stopping in even if there isn't an order she's expecting to get in, but those are the sorts of little things that people tend to look forward to.
>>
>>33813420
Accompanying her to Thierri also leaves her alone when we leave. She doesn't consider him to be good company, at least not someone who can understand the problems she has.

I'm not saying we HAVE to do it, it is a good compromise considering that we're not on her route anymore, but at the same time I'm still thinking that it's important to build bridges with her.

I didn't vote on this one because I don't know which one is the 'best' option.
>>
>>33813409
Third option is more likely to annoy her than to get us a rank-up.
>>
>>33813447

There's important matter to discuss, why would she want someone who "understands her issues" right now? She's not going to talk about them.
>>
>>33813485
Sometimes have the OPTION to talk about something can be a huge help, even if not used or taken.
>>
>>33813485
It's about support and not actually because she's going to use it.
>>
As I said on the twitters, I'm going to have to end this one early.
I have to say, your reactions to Anatole were really amusing, as was your reaction to the latest happenings.

Next thread will be on Friday night, i was going to say that I was going to try and start it early but then I remembered that Guardians of the Galaxy is out tomorrow and yeah.

Now is question time if you had any.

Because nobody can resist the appeal of a gun-toting raccoon. That, and Blue Suede.
>>
>>33813500

But she doesn't have the option, Thierri will be there and she doesn't want to talk about her problems in front of him.

>>33813520

If she wanted our support she can get it any other time of the day.

All I'm saying is she doesn't want or needour support while she's talking politics with her father. She's not a baby and would feel shitty for us sacrificing our trip out of pity.

Reviews are good and I love the comic run that it's based on, so I have hope.
The next thread will be Princess Guard.
