Excuse me, Commissar, but doesn't the big red commissar hat make you an obvious target for enemies while providing literally no protection of any kind? If you're so important, shouldn't you at least have a helmet like we do?
Don't be stupid, guardsman. You should know red ones run faster. Its basic knowledge.
>>33798684Guardsman, it warms an old Commissar's heart that you're so concerned with his welfare, but I'll lay your fears to rest. The hat generates a weak power field effective in diverting most small arms fire, and a few other things.Did you really think it was cause my head's thick that I broke that big Ork's teeth earlier this week?
Well, Guardsman, it helps to know that even if I weren't to wear this hat, The foe would likely know where I am. Every race has its own means of doing this, but obviously yelling at undisciplined or weaker-willed troops tends to make one stand out. Second, this varies between Commissars. I happened to find that such a hat would draw attention to me from enemies, the better for killing them, and it draws attention from my troops, the better to let them know that there is a price for insubordination.
>>33798684Guardsman, you should know by now, that with greater rank comes greater faith. Shielding oneself with petty armor breeds weakness, and the only reason you get as much as you get is because it's in the Imperium's best interests to keep you alive long enough to realize that faith is your greatest protection. We commissars lead by example, boy, attracting attention to ourselves and braving the odds to show you grunts what to do. Do we get shot? Absolutely. Do we inspire a hundred others to do even better than we did? Definitely. Is it worth it for the divine Imperium, of which we are but a minuscule cog? Beyond question. My life is of little consequence. My example can be worth far more. Now get back to the front lines soldier, and be at ease knowing I will be right there with you. Even should you falter in your courage, I and my pistol will ensure that you do yourself no dishonor, so you may live forever at the Emperor's side. That is the only reward worth having, soldier.
>>33799775Commissar, I have been lucky enough to fight along side the Angles of the Emperor. Do they lack faith according to what you said? They are covered in some kind of armour I can't begin to understand but it looks a lot better than my flack jacket.
>>33798684TROOPER!DO YOU POSSESS A REFRACTOR FIELD GIFTED TO YOU BY THE EMPEROR'S SERVANTS THAT YOU MAY SAFELY SHOW YOUR RANK IN THE FIELD WITHOUT THE NEED FOR CUMBERSOME HELMETS?THEN MAN THE LINE, THE BUGS ARE COMING AROUND FOR A FIFTEENTH PASS.
>>33798684Historically, the Russian comissars hated the hats.
>>33799894The Angles of the Emperor are of the exact geometry to deflect bullets. Stop being obtuse.
>>33799894The Astartes wear holy gear, consecrated unto the task. It is a symbol of their faith, channeling righteousness unto the foe. I have heard stories of unarmed Astartes defeating foes you and I could not hope to match, do not doubt their faith. It is as if they wear their own Uplifting Primer, designed specifically for them by the Emperor Himself, a cathedral for each Marine to carry into battle, just as our priests carry holy icons to the front lines. Their armor lets them transcend even their flesh, amazing as it is. This is because they are holy warriors. Were you or I to put it on, it would burn and crush our sinful forms. Their armor magnifies what lies within, showing the enemy the strength of their spirit, this is why it is given only to they who can demonstrate that spirit. We are given armor of faith, that we may strengthen our faith. Astartes have lived their whole lives in the faith, so that they may wear the Emperor's own armor. If only it were possible, my faith would let me wear such gear, but I am but a man, and must make do with what I have. As must you, guardsman. Now get moving, before your curiosity leads you to heresy.
>>33799775...you know, that does explain those woad covered Guardsmen we fought alongside a couple years back. And the Custodes. I saw one once you know Commissar, when on pilgrimage. Amazing sight. So, why the Astartes wear such heavy armor then?
>>33799894If given power armor, you, the man inside, would grow reliant on it and grow weak. As would I. The Emperor's Finest are part of their armor, and begin from strength that armor may never cripple their spirit. They've earned it, soldier, and you haven't, so get back in the damned trench before I have you shot for being AWOL.
>>33798958I'm sorry sir, but well, you've absorbed an unhealthy Xeno idea.*KRAK*
>>33799174Huh, well that makes sense.
>>33800140Partly it's to let them fight in space, or in deadly atmospheres. Faith aside, we can't equip the entire Imperial Guard with enclosed suits, so we prioritize. This is but mundanities, and is largely inconsequential. The important half is that the Astartes are our holy warriors. Our monks. Our examples to aspire to for courage, tenacity, endurance, and victory. It is right and proper that their armor should be glorious and powerful beyond all others, that our enemies should fear its approach and know their doom has come beyond all doubt. They must also be visible to the masses, so that all humanity may know its saviors have come to defend them. The tip of the spear must be fearful, after all.
Man, the more I read these threads the more I begin to see the Commissar as a gruff, rough father type figure, leading the masses of Guardsmen along and answering their every question faithfully within the Emperor's belief. Unless it's something downright heretical though, that gets them shot.
>>33800267I have personally shot more than one fellow commissar for needlessly slaughtering his men. It is shameful, but sometimes the Scholas mistake bloodlust for leadership. The worst was when a young man in the battalion deployed to our rear went mad with bloodlust, shooting dozens of his own men in a frenzied desire to have them break orders and rush the front lines. By the Emperor's grace, I put him down, just as the marks of Khorne began to blaze through his skin. So eager was he to get to the fight, that he forgot WHY he was fighting in the first place. Heresy is contemptible and deserving only of death, but never, ever, ever let yourself run wild, for that will lead you into heresy far worse than a man trying to retreat when he should not.
>>33800267The more I see these threads, the more I think of a Commissar as a grumpy grandpa who is surrounded by tiny children who won't shut the fuck up while he's trying to fix something.
>>33800267Stuff like this seems to be how "better" commissars appear in most 40k fiction anyways. They're leaders, but not slaughterers of their own. In the Ciphas Cain books, it was noted that those Commissars who executed too many of their own tended to have 'accidents' behind the lines.
>>33800414Different commissars, different viewpoints.
>>33800488Heretic detected. It's not like Cain is anything more than dogshit anyway.
>>33800342Something similar happened to me on a Crusade in Segmentum Pacificus, actually. One of our most notable commissars, with a record of absolute courage and fearlessness under fire, and a record of kills and victories long enough to stretch back to Holy Terra, wound up being revealed as a servant of the Blood God, earning his victories through drawing upon the Warp for strength. It really shook up everyone from the grunts to the high command, and we dithered for almost a year slaughtering his subordinates, who had spread heresy throughout their commands. Turns out, you can kill a lot of orks, and look like heroes, by calling on demons to keep you going. Their big plan was to do so well in the Emperor's service that they might be called to Holy Terra to receive some sort of reward, and by infiltrating, attack the Emperor himself. Failing that, they'd try to strike at our high command and wreck the entire Crusade. I count my blessings every day that my commander was one of those who broke the news of the heresy, or I might have been taken in.
>>33798684Excuse me, Commissar, I am severely depressed can I volunteer to lead the next suicide charge, If I am gonna get myself killed I would like it to be for serving the Emperor to the best of my abilities.
>>33800590What heresy do you speak? Commissar Ciaphas Cain is a Hero of the Imperium!
>>33798684>Keep firing, Assholes!
>>33800698>Implying Blackadder in space is actually a good idea for 40K>Implying Sandy Mitchell has any grasp of the scale or the power ladders of 40K>Implying those books are not, in fact shit, and casualizing the BL.
And to think all I know about w40k is from this kind of threadsbasically starcraft and starship troopers with a big chunk of nonsensestill entertaining but I wouldn't play it
>>33800753Sir? At what? We're on our own base. It's the middle of the night. We're helping rebuild the planet after the Ork strike, remember sir? There isn't anything to fire at.
>>33800937>pssst, private. when he tells you what to shoot at, move forward and check his eyes. if they're red or bloodshot, we've got a problem.
>>33800937>Guardsmen doing reconstruction workWhat the hell is this? the severan Dominion?
>>33801326Sir, do I really need to cite to you The Emergency Martial Law Regulations and Provisions for the Safeguarding of Civilian Populations in Areas Under the Protection of His Divine Majesty's Imperial Guard and Allied Forces CCXXVIIth revised edition, paragraph 462, section 332Aii(b)?Imperial Guard forces, when stationed on a world with no active hostilities but structural damage in severity as laid out in paragraph 671, section 1004Aiii(f) shall, in addition to garrison duties to make up for PDF losses, engage in reconstruction work, especially those areas in which military expertise is most needed, including but not limited to, re-training the PDF survivors, building fortifications, safeguarding scattered civilian populations, and ensuring lines of communication are restored as quickly as possible.
>>33801438Is it true that it is also written that Imperial Guardsmen should breed with the natives to ensure a healthy supply of recruits for the Imperium in the next two next decades?Because I kinda already started
>>33801574It is.Thank the Emperor I'm not stationed on an Ogryn world this time.
>>33800908Eh, the game is alright, but the rulebook is dense as hell and the Models are far too pricey considering the work you have to put into them to look mediocre at best.
>>33801438*BLAM*Any trooper who has actually read the entire thing well enough to cite from it by memory is obviously corrupted by the Ruinous Powers.
>>33801914What manner of madness is this, Commisar?!Is it not the Duty of a Guardsman to know the Uplifting Primer by heart? Is it not our Duty to understand its wisdom and absorb its knowledge so that we may better fight in he name of our Holy Emperor? Thank the Emperor that you shot him right in the chest! It seems his Primer managed to stop the bullet.
>>33802984That wasn't part of the primer. He was citing from some piece of Administratum fertilizer. To quote something like that offhand, he would have had to read through it, not once, but many times. Any Guardsman who has that kind of time and attention span has been either shirking his duties, or corrupted by Chaos. Possibly both. *BLAMBLAM*
>>33803047what if the Guardsman was tasked with assisting an Administratum official during the last war jump?, maybe it the navigator didn't mess up he wouldn't have been forced to study civil law from this guy
>>33801664>Thank the Emperor I'm not stationed on an Ogryn world this time.Did you really think that would save you Guardsman!?
>>33803177Actually commissar, I think I knew that guy. He had a photographic memory. I remember because he needed to requisition some sleeping tablets to help him deal with what he'd seen on the battlefield and mid-warp.Shit at small talk though, ended up talking to my lazgun more than him.
>>33800267The more I read these threads, the harder it is for me to distinguish the Commissar from Patrick Steward.
>>33798684>same retarded picture>same retarded thread>every dayThis is why we can't have nice things.
>>33805653But Anon, this IS the nice thing.
>>33798684He needs to be seen by his troops, considering he is there to er... ensure loyalty and morale. Unless you have snipers, commissars aren't really targeted that much considering how heavy the setting battles are, very little time to search for a red hat in the midst of endless walls of enemies.
Excuse me, Commissar, but if the tau are obsessed with following their "Greater Good", and getting others to join them, why don't we tell them that the best way to fulfill the greater good is to eliminate all the orks, tyranids, and lie that if they accomplish the task, then we will all join their empire. Wouldn't the tau go extinct while attempting to complete their task, while also making a dent in our enemies?
>>33806514Because the Bluies aren't as stupid as you are, Trooper. They barely have FTL travel, they're pretty much stuck in their corner of the Galaxy. How would they even get to some of the major Orkholds in the next millenia? They know they can't, so they're not going to try. Now for wasting my time, you're on latrine duty for the next week. And *BLAM* You're going to need an augmetic kneecap.
>>33806728I've been wanting an upgrade, Commissar!
Excuse me, Commissar, the Administratum just sent us new orders. We're supposed to assist a regiment called the Emperor's Membranes in an anti-greenskin campaign in the Sarthaz sector.
>>33808315Very well. Get ready for embark. Zathras Legion, move out!
So uh, which faction would Mr. Plinkett fall under? I was thinking Slaanesh:>Gambling>Whores>Fatty foods>Detailed criticism of film art
Commissar, I literally have no idea how to fire my gun. They dragged me off of my planet and they threw me here and I have no training experience whatsoever. I have literally stood there while training was happening and no one noticed me. At all.
>>33808566Tog proud to serve Emp-Rar! Come from far village Hyannoth!
>>33808648Wait a minute... were there Abhumans in this regiment before?
>>33808648>>33808719I...I still don't know how to fight...no one taught me anything. I don't understand.
>>33808566If you had read your Uplifting Primer, you would know how. *BLAM!* Corporal, please clear away this foolish trooper's remains.
Commisar! Commisar! I ripped off my own arms and beat an Ork to death with it! It feels so fucking good! What's wrong with me? Aw fuck, I've never been so turned on!
>>33808364which group drives their officers more crazy?the Emperors powder kegs, or the guardsmen that ask too many questions?
>>33808833How'd you rip off the second arm? Also, how'd you beat an ork to death without arms to wield the severed arms?
>>33808863Definitely the Zathras Legion
>>33808878My teeth, sir. I held both arms in my mouth.I also dislocated my jaw, sir. I'm pretty sure I fired my geneseed when I did that.
>>33808928Guardsman, I'm pretty sure you're dead.As in, you've literally lost so much blood you've stopped bleeding, and you're full of bullet holes.
>>33809005See, that's the thing, Commisar. I should probably be dead, but instead I have a ragging boner and just want to skull fuck the next thing that runs at me. Is this the Emperor's will? Because it feels like the Emperor's will.
>>33808863well, on the one hand, we have the 1st Membranes, a regiment that is 97% psykers, and has 4 imperator titans. On the other hand, there is the Zathras Legion, so named because most of, if not all the guardsmen are named from the same family, in which everyone is named Zathras, and all of these guardsmen ask too many questions, involving things they should have no possible way of knowing about.I think it's a tie.
Excuse me, Commissar? I just wanted to thank you for supporting us and getting my butt into the fray when it counted. I've been transferred to a hive world where there's been some chaos activity nearby. I just wanted to say it was an minor to have met you, and if I beat you to the Emperor's side, I'll ask Him to keep an eye on you.
>>33809064Don't forget that not matter how many of them get BLAM'ed, the Zathras legion always has around the same number of guardsmen. I think that tilts it in favor of them.
>>33809064The Zathras Legion has a proud history and many of the Imperium's greatest heroes have spawned from their gene-pool, from Lord Solar Macharius Zathras, to Commisar Yarrick Zathras, to Ollanius Pius Zathras, to Malcador Zathras the Sigilite himself.
Why do the xenos hate us, sir?
>>33809216Xenos are like crustaceans son, from Ancient Terra. They feel only 3 things in life: Hate, pain, and joy in killing the innocent. Pity them soldier, for theirs is a horrid existence. Pity them, and put them out of their misery without hesitation.
>>33809041Are you sure?
>>33798684Excuse me Commissar, but since we're due to ship out tomorrow, I think this has come to a head. You see, back when we were storming the city, I came across a civilian, took her in, kept her protected at my post, and she helped keep the bedroll warm at night sir.Anyway, since we're due to ship out, should I tell her something? Or should I take her with the regiment?
Sir, there's a man standing outside the camps screaming about someone with a silly name. Something with an S. Slanish? Something like that.
>>33809322...yep, I'm am sure that the Emperor is in my head telling me to go around raping the skulls of my enemies, and maybe cut my nipples off a little.
>>33809179is this factual, myth that they have begun to believe after millennia, or just the same type of blatant falsehood as what is used by the Galactic Partridges to make themselves look superior?
