Your eyes narrow. You draw a breath. Your pulse quickens. Your fingers squeeze the trigger. Holes burst open on the targets in rapid succession, spreading paper all over the firing range. Though ordinary soldiers would have been hard pressed to make even one of your shots, you consider this to be an excellent morning routine-as do the dozens of other mercenaries training here.

You are Wolf: an elite mercenary even among the elites of Hound Company. In this fallen age of strife and bloodshed, you are among the hottest commodities on the market. Though you haven't much need for practice any more, you still find yourself called to the firing range in your downtime. You know the pistol in your hand by heart: high caliber rounds, seven shots, a simple but reliable action, carefully carved wood and gunmetal polished to a mirror sheen...it might be getting time for you to find yourself a hobby.

"Wolf", it's the PA system, "Please come to the Strategic Deck."

The Strategic Deck? In this colossal tank you call a home, that is the one place you've never been allowed. You bid farewell to the others training and make your way to the central lift, which connects all the floors on the Mobile Fortress Astrea. From there, it will only be a simple crank on the lever to send you to the Strategic Deck...

A harsh departure from the dull greys and browns that fill the other decks, the Strategic Deck almost blinds you with its sheer multitude of colors. Even disregarding the hundreds of monitors that constantly flicker between images, the entire deck is a verdant garden. Not even the survival training decks feature such a wide variety of flora. You step out onto plush grass and unmarred steel panels. Trees grow up from the ground, connecting ceiling to floor, and information stations are seemingly embedded into their trunks. Vines and wires mix freely, and flowers are in full bloom.

"Yo. Welcome to the jungle, baby."
>>
>>33780124
Baby...?

You glance downward to see a young woman sporting the Hound uniform. Her bright red hair and freckles contrast with her unusually pale skin. She gives you a mocking salute before continuing.

"How's it going, Wolf? I'm Crying Harrier, I'll be your primary Support Operator from here on out. Nice to meet ya, baby."

Is she going to call you that every time?

"Yes!"

You rub your forehead. Okay then.

>What's with this place? It's so...green.
>Crying Harrier? You've never heard of her before.
>Straight to business then. What are you here for?

What's with this bizarre place? It's so green. You thought you were in a tank, not a greenhouse. Harrier plants her hands on her hips and puffs up.

"I thought you'd ask that! Everyone does!"

Does that mean she has an answer? The redhead looks to the side and avoids eye contact.

"Wweell...from what we can tell, Old Wolf had his preferences. Seems he was more at home in nature than in a tank, so he spruced the place up a bit to put him at ease."

...

"It's a guess, okay," She rolls her eyes at you, "That was a long time ago. It's just like this now, and you'll just have to get used to it if you don't like it."

Well, it's not a bad thing. You think you rather like the atmosphere here as well. It's very soothing. You feel like you could just curl up on the grass right now and have a little nap.

"That's the spirit," Harrier beams, "You're just like the Old Wolf. Probably."

Harrier leads you over to a console and has you take a seat. Several files and lists flash over the screen before she pulls up your profile. Hm..there's a little more information than you'd like on there.

"So, Panther told me to make sure you take your first contract 'as your own man' or whatever that means. You've never chosen your own contract before, right?"

Yeah, you were always just assigned to jobs. You never had a choice in what you did or who you worked with. Come to think of it, Panther took most of your money too.

"Oh yeah, we're gonna change that. Panther told me to let you have your pick of two contracts here. Just to warm you up to the idea. What I have for you is...an Extermination Contract," a fuzzy photograph of what looks like a large beast flashes on the screen, "And a Demolition Contract," the picture quickly flashes over to an overhead view of a military base.

"I can explain them a bit more if you want, or you can just dive in!"

Kickass.
>>
You want to know more about what you're getting into before you agree to it. Harrier sighs and opens up her files, displaying an assortment of information on the computer. I hope she doesn't expect you to actually read all of that...

"The Extermination job was funded by a confederation of villages in the Astolian Highlands. Looks like their usual watering hole got invaded by a an angry, River King Dragon. As you know, they have the ability to produce an electric shock when in danger. The villagers are afraid to go anywhere near the water by themselves, and so they pooled together all their money and came to us," Harrier shakes her head, "Frankly, it's not enough. But sometimes we take charity cases. If you're willing to take a hit for these dirt farmers, go ahead. I'm sure the hunt will be fun enough."

You scratch your chin. So what about the other job?

"The Demolition contract has been ordered by Colonel Vici of the Varani Republic Forces. He's found a whole base full of old royal loyalists, and wants it razed to the ground. He doesn't much mind that they're still occupying it and he doesn't quite care how you do it. He's also been a bit stingy on his offer, but we figure that having a Colonel as a happy client is a good enough bargain. Besides," she leans over,"he was SUPER handsome!"

Good for her.

>>
Okay, by a narrow margin, it looks like you're monster hunting.
>>
>>33781783
Fuck yeah. Gonna need some anti-electric stuff.
Being covered in water works oddly well enough for that, since the water will A. conduct the electricity away from our squishyparts, and B. boil off, so we don't get immediately rekt by searing hot metal.
>>
Vote to wherever leads us to bang our one legged instructor.
>>
Harrier bats her eyelashes at you, "What's this? A Hound doing charity work? Wow, you are, like, sooo cool and dreamy. Can I get your autograph?"

What is she..

"Oh, you took that seriously? My bad. Anyway, you're not getting paid much for this, but you'll still need to divide your cut with a partner. Wolf designation mercenaries have the right to hire a partner from outside the Company. Panther told me to make sure you do that for this first mission, get a taste of it."

You really don't need a partner, especially not one that's unfamiliar with you and your tactics. They would just slow you down. Harrier's face falls, and disgust creeps into her voice.

"I thought I said I was kidding. You're not that cool, kid."

You zip your mouth.

"So, anyway, you don't have to worry about that. All of these mercenaries are specifically people who know about your past work and have volunteered to work with you...for a cut, that is. So let me go down the list of options, yeah? This is who is available now..."

Name: Knight Errant Lyonette Eliane Aubert
Affiliation: True Royal Army
Age: 22
Height: 173
Eyes: Green
Hair: Blonde
A traveling knight bearing sword and shield, Lyonette is a picture of a bygone age. Even though she works as a mercenary, Lyonette is dedicated to the idea of Noblesse Oblige; she has abandoned missions which have clashed with her sense of ethics. Despite her willful nature, she continues to be hired due to her sheer destructive power.

Name: Ursa Major and Minor (EVA and LILY)
Affiliation: The Coven of Sidika
Age: 18
Height: 160
Eyes: Heterochromatic, Blue and Brown
Hair: Grey
The twin witches of Ursa are only known by the names Eva and Lily; the two are perfectly identical, save for their mirrored heterochromia. As far as their combat abilities are concerned, both twins are very powerful energy users. Eva, the "Major", manifests the power of fire and Lily, the "Minor", displays the opposite power of ice. Ursa always fetch a high price, and are valued any time that collateral damage is not an issue.

"So that's what you go for, huh? Don't blame me if you can't control them. You'll want to get your gear ready tonight, because tomorrow you're shipping out to the Highlands. You might want to consider something a little bigger than your knife..."

You look down to your standard arms. She's right. If you're going to be fighting a river dragon, you'll want something a little more substantial to give you that edge. You take your leave of the Strategic Deck and head back to your personal quarters. Your room is sparse, with no decoration, no personal touches, no color...but it does have a weapons locker.

You know that when fighting Monsters, it's generally best to use close quarters tactics. The superlative hide and reflexes of most Monsters make most ranged attacks nothing more than a distraction. You'll want to cut, and you'll want to cut well.

"I knew you'd pick the Hunting job."

Panther. You give a slight nod to your mentor, but don't turn away from your work. You throw away a defective Sonic Cutter. Those things aren't worth shit without their battery.

"I also knew you'd be back here in minutes to go find yourself a big enough toothpick. Blades were never really your style, but you certainly do have a lot here."

You don't hate blades, nor do you particularly like guns. To you, they're all the same. Just a means to an end, and you want to have as many 'means' as possible. Panther laughs and steps inside, sitting down on your bed.

"Never thought I'd hear that from the guy who took my eye and my leg with a fruit knife."

...You'd rather not talk about that. It's been a long time, and you're a different person now. Panther shrugs her shoulders and lights up a cigarette, blowing the smoke in your face.

"Hey, why are you being so uptight? It ain't like you got crippled..."

You continue digging through your weapons, not offering Panther a single glance. You'll talk about that when you want to, and not a moment sooner. Besides, you think you've found what you're looking for. You stand up and display your weapon, and Panther's eye grows wide.

"It's a shame I won't get to go with you. That looks like a lot of fun."

Yeah. 'Fun.'

...

You've been sitting on this cold, damp rock almost all day now. You arrived at the rendezvous point at the crack of dawn, like you agreed, but Ursa Major and Minor still haven't arrived. You pull at your jacket, burying your face into the pelt lining.

You hate the cold. You'd rather be in the desert than sitting out here, waiting on a couple of no-good mercs. You grab the long, heavy case carrying your hunting weapon and get up. Maybe it's time you ditched them and went solo? It doesn't look like they're going to show up any time soon.

No! You can't abandon your task! You hired these witches, and you will wait here until they show up. You plant yourself on the rock and look out across the gently rolling hills with a stern expression. The grey sky begins to dim, but you do not falter. You maintain your vigil until, finally, weariness and fatigue overtake you. You decide that it's no skin off their nose if you take a nap. They're taking their sweet time anyway.

You sit down next to the rock and curl up, letting the warmth of your coat lull you into a deep sleep.

...

Everything is burning. The screams fill your ears, and you can't get the taste of ash out of your mouth. Your skin is seared and blackened, but the pain doesn't match the sting from your muscles as you keep running away. It's all you can do. There's no way you can hope to do anything against this. You've just got to run as far away as you can, and find your mother and father.

You've got to keep running.

Just keep running.

...

You feel a presence. In a moment, you're on your feet, and your pistol is leveled at someone's face.

"How scary."

"How frightening."

Your sense returns to you, and you clearly look at the pair in front of you. Red and blue robes, long and flowing, drape over their shoulders. Covered in white and black lace, they open up down the front to reveal simple pleated skirts and blouses. They look young, but salt-and-pepper hair adorns their heads, and that's when you notice their eyes. One brown and blue eye on each, mirrored across each other's faces. These must be...

"Yes, I'm Ursa Major," the girl in the red robes says, winking at you with her brown eye.

"Yes, I'm Ursa Minor," the other twin follows the same movements, blinking with her blue eye instead.

"You can call us Eva..."

"...and Lily, if you want. Can we call you Mr. Wolf?"

Why the hell were they so late? You were supposed to meet at sunrise, and it's now dark! The girls look at each other, then back to you. They blink for a few moments, then Eva speaks up.

"We forgot."

Oh, that makes sense. They just forgot is all, perfectly understandable. You give them both a knock on the top of their head and storm off towards the village. These are supposed to be S-Rank Mercenaries?

...

The village chief looks you over, running a hand through his thick, white beard as he sizes you up. You're pretty sure he's trying to figure out if he's getting his money's worth. You're in the village center, a large manor that used to contain the feudal lord of this area. Since he got the smart idea to get up and go, now the chief or mayor or whatever they're calling themselves this year has taken up residence. Bear pelts and beads hang from doorways and ceilings, and there is a large fire cooking a pot of stew. It smells pretty good.

"So...you're the young Wolf, huh? I expected a much more...imposing figure."

"Don't be so quick to judge, " says Eva.

"He's a real killer," finishes Lily.

You don't need their help. You're doing a job like this out of the good of your heart. If he has a problem with the way you look, you can just give him his chump change back.

"Fine, fine. I'll accept that you're the new Wolf. For now."

The chief takes a seat and motions for you to come beside him. He gives you a bowl of stew and lights up his pipe.

"So tell me, Wolf, what do you know of River Dragons?"

River Dragons, huh?

They generally grow to be 20 meters long, and about 10 meters tall. They're almost all muscle, except for an extremly thin layer of special fat that immunizes them against their own electric shocks. Speaking of their shocks, it seems like their power comes from special glands in their...

You notice Eva and Lily staring at you.

"Mr. Wolf is a nerd."

"Such a loser."

Do they have a problem with you being knowledgeable or something? This much is required for every Hound soldier! Knowledge is power, and if you know your enemy, you've already won. Eva and Lily look at each other, then back to you.

"Super loser."

"Probably still a virgin."

You hate these girls. You hate them with a passion. The chief taps you on the shoulder and asks what you do to counter the beast. Of course, you already have your answer. You pick up your case and open it. Inside is a long handled blade, with a strange phial embedded into the hilt. The weapon is sectioned into three distinct parts, and there are odd mechanisms connecting these pieces. You withdraw the weapon and brandish it in front of your peers.

This is your Hunter's Double Edge. Well, it's not really yours. You killed the previous owner. But it's a great weapon for taking down these myth beasts. Made from monster bone and sinew, it's more than tough enough to sheer through their hide and scales.

"So...you just plan to hit it with a sword," the chief looks at you quizzically.

Yes, you were planning on something like that. Eva and Lily begin to giggle wildly, pointing their fingers at you and hiding their faces. Is there something funny going on?

"Mr. Wolf is silly."

"Mr. Wolf is clearly compensating."

You're not compensating. Definitely not.

You kneel down and dip your hands into the cool stream. Cupping a bit of the water, you first carefully smell it, then take a sip. There is a slight coppery taste to it, almost like blood. The texture is a little sandy as well, suggesting higher than normal activity disturbing the bed. What's more, you don't see any fish in this otherwise calm and clear body of water. You know that fishing is part of these people's way of life, and there's no indication of overfishing. That means-

"What are you doing, Mr. Wolf?"

"Were you thirsty, Mr. Wolf? I thought you packed water."

Of course you packed water!

You're a day out from the village, a couple miles away from the lake that's supposed to hold the River Dragon that's been causing so much trouble. The rolling hills and grey rock of the highlands can prove more troublesome to traverse than you originally thought. Especially when you have two dunderhead witches constantly second-guessing your every move. Was hiring them really a smart idea?

You grit your teeth and try to explain it carefully to them. You're doing some scouting right now. You know that thing where you try to get some information on your target before you kill them. Eva and Lily raise their eyebrows at you.

"Wow, you do that?"

"So uncool."

"Lily and I always just show up and go BANG," Lily cuts in, "and WHOOSH!"

...Really? They don't ave any sort of strategy, or tactics, or even a simple idea. Is a witch's power really so great that they don't need to do any sort of planning?

"We let Libra plan for us," Eva yawns.

"Libra can do the boring stuff," Lily rests her head in her hand,"Do you like to do boring stuff, Mr. Wolf?"

You'd like to do your damn job.

You've had it up to here with their nonsense. You march over to the girls, with as stern of an expression as you can muster. You glare at them, and tell them that they'd better shape up or you'll shape them up. Eva and Lily giggle and feign fear.

"Big Bad Wolf is going to eat us!"

"He'll huff and puff on us!"

You growl and yank each girl up off the ground by their robes, holding them at eye level. You reiterate your point: they need to straighten up or you will straighten them out. The twin witches just continue to titter, swinging around in your grip.

"Oh no, he's going to beat us, Lily!"

"He's going to abuse us, Eva!"

Your eyebrow twitches. Without warning, you knock the two girls heads together, savoring the dense, rich sound of their impact. They squeal, and you drop the two to the ground. They rub their heads and backsides, looking up at you with misty eyes.

"A savage dog!"

"A brutal mongrel!"

You're a person, damn it, and you're tired of their shenanigans. You're in charge here. You're their boss! They better respect you! The young women stand up, looking down at the ground.

"Yes, Wolf," they mumble in unison. That's better...

...

You peer at the lake with your binoculars. Despite the relative lack of wildlife in the area, things seem completely normal. You know that there's *something* big here, but you just can't see it. Eva and Lily sit on the ground behind you, nursing the fresh lumps on their heads. Every now and again, you can hear one sniff. They sure are milking this little punishment.

"Wolf," Eva begins, "Aren't you going to kill it yet?"

"Yes, Wolf," Lily continues, "We came to kill it, right?"

That you did, but you don't feel safe just charging in without a plan, do you?

>Screw it, you want to get out of here as fast as you can. Attack!
>You want to get closer first. Observation is key.
>You dread the answer, but you want to know their...strategy.

No, a plan is necessary! Knowledge is key! The Old Wolf taught your Company that every battle is won before the first shot is fired. It's won in the mind!

...Thinking back on that, he was a little cliche with that bit of advice, huh? Nevermind. You tell Eva and Lily that you're going for a crawl.

"A crawl?"

Exactly.

...

You pull yourself forward, sliding across the ground on your belly. Your elbows and knees are skinned and throbbing, but you'll maintain this posture for days if you have to. Inch by inch, you draw closer to the lake, never taking your eyes off the azure body. Through the binoculars, you can see some disturbance in the waters, but without any sort of advanced optics, that's all you can tell at this distance. You'll need to get even closer.

Behind you, Eva and Lily continue to whine. They fret over their soiled robes and wrinkled blouses as they clumsily trail behind you. What's with these girls? Aren't they soldiers? Are they just that unfamiliar with the methods of drawing close to an enemy?

"We've never done this! It's so dirty!"

"Do you like dirtying us that much!"

These girls need to watch what they say better....Wait! There, by the shore, you can see it...something surfacing. A long, pale blue snout pokes out from under the lake, its scales shimmering. Golden teeth line its maw, and its scales are shimmering like sapphires in the afternoon sun. A large, bulbous body slinks out afterwards, propelled by four plain flippers.

It's certainly a River Dragon but...it's a child. You continue to keep watch, and you see a dozen more surface and flop themselves onto the beach.

"How can you tell it's a child?"

"Does it really matter if it's a child?"

>Explain the situation to Eva and Lily.
>Silently observe for a bit longer.
>Attack now!

There are at least two adults dragons, that means more unpayed work.

So it looks like the unanimous consensus is to try to reason for compassion with evil witch twins.
>>
>>33803703
Compassion?
No, I want them to realize why we won't charge headlong, fuck baby dragons, they'll be adults on no time.
But I only speak for myself
>>
>>33803703
uh not compassion i am more concrened about a pair of pissed off adult water dragons on our ass

>>33803703

>>
>>33803431
>it's a child
Mom and Dad are nearby.
>>
"So if we kill the babies..."

"The target will be mad?"

Eva and Lily share a puzzled expression.

"Isn't that good?"

No! It's not good! You'd like to kill this thing with as little risk to yourself as possible. Sure, you might be able to take it while it is angry. Heaven knows that you've pissed off more than your share of monsters during your missions. That's not the problem here. The problem is that a pissed off River Dragon has the capability to completely ruin this lake forever, killing all the fish, all the wildlife, and turning over the lakebed completely. Even if you manage to kill the beast like this, you won't get any pay if you can't keep these people's water source protected. It's like these girls have never done a protect and escort mission.

"We haven't."

"We sometimes get asked if we're escorts."

You rub your temples. You need a plan. You've got to lure out the mother dragon without killing one of her children. Fighting that monster in the water is suicide. You've got a couple options to play around with. First of all, you can just spook her clutch. A well placed shot or some kind of magic from the twins should make the mother dragon surface. You could also nab a child and leave it someplace for the mother to find. As soon as the dragon lets her guard down, you'll strike. Third, you could give her some kind of bait...but River Dragons only like large prey. Where are you going to find something like that around here?

You find your eyes drifting back to the twins. They look about the right size...but what are you thinking? They're sure to mess it up somehow.

>Frighten the dragons
>Kidnap a juvenile dragon.
>Use the twins as bait.
>>
>>33804136
>Kidnap a juvenile dragon.
Most danger for us, but least chance of it going nuts and ruining the lake (and our paycheck).

Also, tell Ursa Major and Ursa Minor not to boil or freeze the lake. Because they totally fucking will if we don't stop them.

You'll just have to take a dragon hostage. No small feat here, as even the children are the size of horses. You'll need to be fast, strong, agile, and most of all, you'll need these two rank amateurs to pull their weight for a change. If you're going to steal one of these dragons, you'll need an appropriate distraction. There's no way you'll be able to grab one and drag it away on your own.

"Leave it to us, Mr. Wolf!" Eva and Lily salute.

You sort of have a bad feeling, but you know that whatever fireworks they make will do the job.

...

You're in position on the opposite side of the lake. A young dragon lies just a short hundred meters away. Through your binoculars, you can see Eva and Lily preparing for their distraction. You just hope that whatever magic they conjure is enough to get the mother dragon to stop looking at your target for just one instant. You hesitate for a moment. Is this really the right thing to do?

You shake your head. There's no helping it now. You give the signal. You see the two girls acknowledge, then they close their eyes and look towards the sky. Their mouths are moving, but from this distance, there's no way you'd be able to tell what they're saying...and then, from nowhere, a hailstone smacks you on the back of the head.

You look up to see the sky darken, and then sheets of ice and rain fall from the sky. Moments later, flashes of light race through the clouds, and burning embers join the hailstones as they pound the earth. The surrounding area lights up in flame and then is instantly doused, over and over again.

From beneath the surface, a towering form bursts forth. Easily the size of the very village that employed you, the mother dragon's form is of terror incarnate. Similar in form to the juveniles, her flippers have since grown into wicked talons, and her snout sports two distinct layers of teeth. Electricity crackles around her as she begins to scoop up her children and lay them on her back, one by one.

Now's your chance. You bolt for the young dragon and leap forward, taking its neck in your arms. You twist in the air, lifting the entire beast over your shoulders, and you slam it into the ground. It doesn't even have a chance to cry out for help before it passes out. Now the only question is where to take it.

>Take it upstream as far as you can.
>Take it to the tallest hill you can find.
>Take it to a flat, grassy plane.
>>
>>33804978
>Take it to the tallest hill you can find.
We need cover and no other option gives us any. It's not like we can lose track of the dragon anyway.

You drag the unconscious dragon several kilometers away under the cover of the unnatural weather. Placing the beast at the top of the tallest hill you can find, you look out to the lake to see the mother dragon enter her panic. River Dragons aren't very smart creatures, but they can count to thirty. She's obviously noticed one of her young is missing by now. All you have to do is wait for this little one to wake up. But wait...there's something else moving, just below the surface.

...

"I don't understand why we didn't just kill it then, Mr. Wolf," Eva lets out a big sigh.

"I don't get it either, Mr. Wolf. We had the perfect chance," Lily shrugs her shoulders.

Would those two kindly shut up? You're desperately trying to keep the captured dragon quiet as you assess the new situation. There wasn't just the mother dragon at the lake. The father was still there. Usually, River King Dragons mate only once and go their separate ways. Have these two formed a pair bond due to the lack of available habitats? Or perhaps they've just grown attached over the years? Is it a partnership or-

"I'm bored."

Shut up!

As you snap at the girls, your hand on the dragon's muzzle slips. Before you can do anything, it lets out an ear piercing scream. Reflexively, you reach out and bash the dragon on the back of the head, knocking it back out. But it's too late. You can see the dragons on the horizon heading for you, both the mother and the father, as well as all of their other children.

You ready your hunting blade, adjusting the phial in the hilt. The gears whir, and the weapon reconfigures itself. Wires pull taught, the blade splits down the middle, a magazine in the guard pushes up a single bolt. The Hunter's Double Edge was never just a sword...it was a sword with a monster hunting crossbow built within. A little gimmicky, but you can't argue with the results.

The Dragons arrive, looming over the three of you. Lightning dances in the air, and you can hear the rush of their brood approaching behind them. This is getting a little heavy. A hand reaches up and taps you on the shoulder. You turn to see Eva and Lily stepping forward.

"We will handle Papa dragon. Do you think you can take Mama by yourself?"

Looks like you don't have a choice...

NEXT TIME!
