Right, so. We've been having 'fun' with the breakers in the house, if i disappear for a little while, we probably popped one and I'm struggling to reset the modem and router. Thank maus and his monster power supply.

“Commander Bishop.”

The voice causes you to look up sharply- you were just adjusting the straps on your thighboard, leaving the support shop after gearing up for your last flight here at barin- You'll have one more takeoff afterwards, of course, but this will be the last landing you'll make on this godforsaken runway.

You can't say you'll miss it.

You won't miss this kind of thing either- as rare as it is to be ambushed like this by four or five matrons, it's still unnerving.

“Ladies.” You greet, nodding respectfully. “Something I can help with?”

Matron Knight- standing next to O'hare- nods. “Yes, luv. There is. We need you to push as hard as you can today. We think your Tabitha may have been on something when she suggested your talent is tied to your health.”

1/2
>>
O'hare speaks up next. “We know she's probably asked you by now to not- maybe she's asked you to throw the match, or maybe even skip it entirely. She knows we can't make you fly, and Di- Admiral Nixon would make sure nothing happened for it if you didn't. We're glad you've decided to fly anyway.”

You get the feeling you're supposed to respond, so you shrug. “I'm not real big on not finishing jobs.” You say, simply.

O'hare nods. “Well, dear, either way we appreciate it. Now, today, Natalya is under the same instructions- give it her absolute best. We're hoping this flight will really shed some light on just what's going on with you and little Samantha.”

You shrug again. “Guess we'll see.”

She nods. “We certainly hope so. Tabitha is very skilled to come to the solution she did so fast- she'd have a bright future as a matron if she could just step back and look at the big picture more often.”

[x] She looks out for her people, that's all.

You shrug, working to keep your face a study in neutrality. “She looks out for her people, that's all.” You say. “And I can't say I've got a problem with that.”

O'hare shakes her head. “No, no, of course she does, we know. It's just that if she could take a look at the bigger picture, how allowing her people to face some danger could benefit everyone, including you. “

“Think about it luv.” Matron Knight says, joining back in the conversation. “You push yourself hard now, and it gives us what we need to understand your talent and it's connection with the young miss Wells. Not only would we be able to help you, we'd be able to help other young men like you, we'd be able to help every witch like miss Wells.”

You shake your head. “Either way, it's above my paygrade. Now, if you ladies will excuse me, I have a flight.”

“Of course, commander Bishop. Good luck up there.” O'hare says, walking with Matron Knight into the support shop- they'll be in the hawks today.

You head down to the hangar, interrupting Merlin halfway through her walkaround with Kenji. She notices you and greets you from beneath they Wyvern's fuselage and open centerline bay. “H-hi Frank!”

“Heya kiddo. Hey Kenji. How's she looking?”

“Good afternoon, Commander. The wyvern is in perfect condition.” Kenji responds- one of the few times he's spoken before Merlin.

Merlin nods, agreeing. “N-No visible faults, a-and the boxes for the bay e-expansion are in place. W-we did some work r-right before they started packing o-our workshop, so we c-can swap them if we need t-to.”

1/2
>>
“Why would we need to?” You ask, peering into your port intake, making sure it's clear of any loose debris. While the turbine discs are hardened in the wyvern, mostly as a measure against you flying the jet apart, that doesn't mean you want to chance FOD you can avoid.

Merlin frowns. “W-we never g-got it to work with b-bigger systems, like the t-tesla cannon o-or the all directional m-missiles. B-but now we can remove it o-or just not power it up a-and use those systems i-if we need to.”

You nod. “Sounds good, kiddo. And we're looking good, time to plane up?”

She nods. “Y-yeah.”

She starts up the ladder first, with Kenji standing what seems to you a carefully selected distance away- far enough that you can't accuse him of anything, close enough that he could help her if she needed it.

She won't, of course, but it's good to see he's behaving.

“Hey Frank, wait up.” You're about to climb up when Ice catches you.

[x] “What's up boss?”

You turn, one hand on the ladder. “What's up boss?”

She's already dressed for flight- her new helmet unit held under one arm. Merlin and Kenji, along with the factory crew, must have worked nonstop to get the pair of Merlin's superstrikers up to their full capability before her workshop was dismantled and sent home.

“Just, take it easy, ok?” She says, clearly uncomfortable. “I don't want to lecture you, but remember we're headed to the front soon, and last thing we need is you to put yourself in a coma again.”

You nod. “The matrons were saying-”

She interrupts you. “They were probably saying exactly what they thought it would take to get you to put forward maximum effort. They've been hinting that I could be a matron myself in a few years if I cooperated. I'm not going to play games with this squadron's effectiveness to do it, especially not now, ok? Just- just do the same.”

I don't really like either, this fight could be like Young's or it could be the easiest yet. We don't know how hard we'll need to push but there's the nagging feeling that Natalya is a Stalin faction mole who will pull shit. We can always make the call in the fight.

How are we in fault for a ship sinking, I mean sure we could have helped or something might have been done but we're not at fought
>>
>>33757330

The USS Saratoga's Captain. She was a witch and flew strikers in Vietnam I think.
>>
>>33757365
Who?
>>
>>33757365

Captain Blackwell. The whole why would a pilot be a ship captain thing came up, and someone mentioned her.
>>
>>33757330
>artillery were the dominant unit
Which is why I brought out the comparison. Naval aviation is THE best means of power projection.
>>
>>33757381
You can't play that game, she isn't Goose.
>>
>>33757259
Get the fuck over it anon. The ship was destroyed by the enemy and we could have done something instead of following our orders? Guess what? That's war.
>>
>>33757381
Our commanding officer, Mack and Georgette's daughter? We crashed her homecoming about 2-months back in-quest.
>>
>>33757330
An Admiral isn't necesarially sitting on a boat ordering a fleet around all Nelsonian. Like Nixon they have a much wider variety of roles in the overall command structure that aren't all telling boats what to do.
>>
>>33757415
True. She gets even less mentions than Goose.

Wait. What are we talking about again?

>>33757428
Who?
>>
>>33757437
Then who tells the boat... Nah. I can't keep this up.
>>
>>33757409
Now. It took a while for that to happen in this 'verse. The battleship proved itself very useful during the Martian War; much more useful than it did during WW2.
>>
>>33757415
Who?
>>
>>33757409
>>33757330
It wasn't artillery guns that held lines and shattered Napoleon's columns at Talavera, Salamenca,or carried steel and hate into breaches in city walls.

It was men with big brass balls willing stand while their buddies were shredded by musket fire around them and return it threefold.
>>
>>33757507
willing to stand*

And even then, the focus on aircraft carriers shows that the aircraft carrier still remained the best even in the SWQ universe. Stop trying to pussyfoot around it, it's just simple fact.

Then how was artillery the dominant unit if it requires infantry to take the field, hold it to secure the guns, and keep it held even during the thickest of fighting so the guns can work?

[x] I think the best course here is to help out- you never know when you'll need friends.

You think long and hard about it- coming close to offering to throw the match, or cancel it totally- still well within your right to do so. Finally, you shrug. “I think the best course here is to help out. Never know when we'll need the friends.”

“Frank-” She starts, but you cut her off.

“But I won't push it. I didn't have to against Young, I don't plan to here, deal?” You say.

She chews her lower lip, then nods. “Alright. I'm going to hold you to that.” She hesitates a second before half-turning away, looking back as you turn. “Good luck up there.”

You don't respond- who needs luck?- as you head up the ladder, swinging your legs into the cockpit and thumping down in your seat. You're still buckling in while Merlin hits the canopy retract and begins firing up the wyvern's systems.

“So what do we know about this one?” You ask, the same you've asked every time you've gone up. Kenji's guys, below, are removing the chock blocks, and Kenji flashes you a thumbs up when you're ready to move. That's one thing you'll miss, Barin is amazingly informal, especially with so few aircraft to worry about. It's almost like your own private airbase.

1/2
>>
>>33757714
Force multiplication. Just how naval aviation works. An aircraft carrier should not be the majority of your force, but it provides much longer ranged and more effective fires. Even still, you don't want it to get into a close fight with a destroyer. It's the exact same thing.
>>
“Not much.” Merlin admits. “Only that she's supposedly from the same programs that put out Konstantina, and almost everyone is creeped out by her.”

“Almost everyone?”

“Konstantina isn't.” Merlin says. “She won't talk to me much about Natalya though.”

“So she's an unknown. Great. Guns only?”

“Of course.” Merlin says, sighing. “Loaded, but both of them are safed and have no ammunition in the chambers. We’re in test mode, but we can defend ourselves if we need to.”

“Good.”

You line up, pausing for a second before pushing the throttles forward until the A/B lights illuminate on both. Releasing the wheel brakes with your toes, the acceleration is at least smooth, even if it is sudden and fast. Lightly loaded, the wyvern leaps into the air with hundreds of feet of runway to spare.

Once in the air, you turn north for the familiar Grampian mountain range.

[x] We’ll go in high- altitude is our friend.

You decide to stay at height- you'd rather have maneuver room and energy than try to play with a witch down around the ground.

The range is cloudy, though it's scattered, not solid overcast. You stay above them- they must be bottoming out below the peaks of the largest ranges, and you don't feel like trusting your luck against a mountain. Still, the pillars of clouds rise up at least a good fifteen thousand feet above even you, topping out high enough up to look like thunderheads.

“We tied on with AWACS?” You ask, suddenly thinking of the RAF Nimrod that's been controlling these exercises the entire time.

“Of course.” Merlin responds, placidly. “Warlock is on GUARD, he's also relaying to Admiral Nixon and the meeting in London.”

“He what?” You respond.

“The Admiral asked for updates, so they're narrating.” Merlin says. “I'm bringing up the sensors, hang on.”

The world around you lights up with data tracks- the projectors mounted on the reinforcing bar of the canopy displaying tracks for every target in radar range. The number quickly begins to pare down as Merlin squelches non-targets- civilian aircraft miles out of the range, birds, observer aircraft you only need to be aware of, not actively tracking.

“Frank I-” she pauses. “Frank! She's at our six! Six low and closing in fast!”

You grunt, acknowledging the warning. At least it saves you the trouble of having to look for her.

[] Dive! She's already in a climb, she's burning energy, there's no way she'll catch you.
[] Disengage! Get some distance between you and her, come back in when you're not being ambushed

[x] Disengage! Get some distance between you and her, come back in when you're not being ambushed

You react by opening the throttles to full, counting on your jet's powerful turbines to carry you away from the young witch- how the hell did she get there without you seeing her anyway? Either way, you quickly realise she's still closing, though much more slowly now- still, she's damn fast, and it limits your options significantly.

Merlin, in the back, is doing everything she can, and has Natalya locked up- regardless of anything else, you'll know where she is, so at least you don't have to worry about that. Why she didn't tell you Natalya was still closing makes you wonder for a second- how did she know you knew? You put it out of your mind and focus on defeating the witch.

She's marginally faster than you, so running is out, but she's still not in gun range. You're approaching your maximum clean speed, screaming along at a couple times the speed of sound.

[x] Dive away! Physics is in your favor here!

Looking back, you push the stick forward, nosing the wyvern towards the ground and toggling on the terrain following systems as you do so. The little witch behind you confidently follows you down, though she's no longer closing, at least.

Unfortunately, you're out of altitude before she's far enough away to allow for anything to turn the tables- at least, not without going back on your words to Ice. Natalya, meanwhile, is closing again, and down among the mountaintops, now, you're at a disadvantage- if not as major one as you were afraid of, the solid rock providing you at least some cover.

“What kinda strikers is this girl in?” You grunt, hauling the wyvern around another peak and shooting a glance over your shoulder. “No way she should have kept with us through that dive!”

“Mig-29s.” Merlin responds, quietly. “Watch the mountains!”

You hop over the mountain- you'd have cleared it with room to spare anyway, but there's no need for you to say anything about it.

“How the hell is she able to keep up with us!” You ask, half to yourself, cranking around another mountain. “I can't get away from her, Sam.”

“Want me to call it?” Merlin asks. “Just chop one throttle to idle and I can call it in. Kenji will cover, I know he will.”

[x] Hell no. Now I'm interested, let's see what this girl can do.

“Hell no.” You respond, looking around and finding Natalya again- she's coming around two other mountains to try and cut you off. Shame for her you won't be there. “Now I'm interested, let's see what this girl can do.”

Merlin, for her part, doesn't respond. Hard to tell sometimes if she approves or not, but even if she doesn't you're pretty sure she won't complain.

Natalya comes around the mountain, clearly expecting to be abeam of you and in good firing position- instead, she's almost dead ahead of you and in immediate danger of running afoul of your cannons. Hit the trigger as she changes direction in an almost perfect nintey degree angle straight up, rocketing out of your gunsight and into the clear air over the mountains.

You've seen witches pull stunts like that before- kind of, though her change of direction was a lot more sudden and pronounced than you're used to. Witches being ultramanuverable isn't new, but you're wondering if this girl is going to put a new definition to it.

You pull the fighter into a climb behind her- only to watch her jerk to the side, like a puppet being yanked on it's string. She's still climbing, though you can't work around to get a shot, and plow into a cloud bank a second later. She stands out clear as day on Merlin's sensors though, the magic she's pumping out lighting her up like a flare to the suite.

Breaking into the clear amongst the towering columns of clouds, You catch Natalya looping around one- she doesn't know you can track her.

You people, we were offer the YF-23 right after we were healed by Georgette! You know that super striker Merlin made? That's a Black Widow II.
>>
[x] Ice will just have to deal. See how the matrons like this one!

This- well, it's both interesting and challenging, and you've never been one to walk away from a challenge. Even newer model Mig-29s shouldn't be able to match you, not even strikers, which tells you either they're heavily modified, or that Natalya is, to paraphrase more than one witch 'highly unnatural'.

Still, she uses magic and that means you'll always have the advantage of knowing where she is, now.

You go arrowing in at her, plowing through a pillar of cloud. She doesn't know you're there- even the roar of your jets being miles behind you- yet, she still manages to jerk completely out of your gun sight when you close to within gun range, dropping almost vertically to below you, her weapon coming around.

You roll away, fouling her shot, though she instantly shifts from her lazy fall to latching onto your tail- accelerating in an eyeblink to start closing into gun range.

There's no way she should have been able to do that- acceleration like that should have pulped her, you were better than the speed of sound and she was near-motionless. She didn't make any effort to convert her fall into forward momentum, either, not that you saw.

We need merlin to recite this against Natalya:
I am the warhead of my Sidewinder
Wyvern is my body and witch magic is my blood
I have created over a thousand modifications
Unknown to matrons, Nor known to frank
Have withstood hunger to attach many Agiles
Yet, these hands will never hold anything lewd
So as I get tone, unlimited missile locks.
>>
>>33764318
Only to find another pair missing.
>>
[x] Is this girl breaking physics? Oh no, I want no part of this.

“Call it, Merlin.” You order, watching Natalya closing the range.

“Done.” She says, calling “knock it off” on the GUARD channel, causing Warlock to order all participants to stop maneuvering, slow down to subsonic speed, and exit the range.

Natalya forms up on you, and you see her looking over at your canopy- at you, specifically- on the flight back, at least before Ice and Slider join on the pair of you, bracketing her.

They'll later tell you they were in no way nervous about her. You don't believe it when they say it.

Your landing at Barin is the best you've ever had- you're almost sad you'll be leaving the place, but you won't miss this runway, not at all. The hangar doors stand open, and you notice the slate-gray sea hawk sitting on the pad, off on the side 'dedicated' to choppers- they can put utility birds there, though the bigger cargo and heavy lift choppers need the whole tarmac, practically, and part of the runway to boot.

You're first down, and you taxi into your spot on the hangar floor by memory practically, stopping and shutting down the jet along with Merlin, waiting for a minute before popping the canopy and greeting Admiral Nixon, who's standing next to Kenji on the hangar floor.

“Afternoon Sir.” You greet, hopping off the ladder and saluting before turning to help Merlin down.

“Afternoon son. How'd it go?”

“Not bad. Decided that pushing myself and my crew wasn't worth it in light of our orders.”

>>
Nixon nods. “Good work, son. Glad to hear it, we're going to need you up there. The reds have some bomber unit that's giving the air force hippies absolute fits. Come in supersonic on the deck at night, they're gone before CAP can get there, practically.”

You frown. “Sounds like we should be headed there now, not after Paris.”

He shakes his head. “I don't have a base for you right now, even if I did send you. The reds are wrecking everything as they're pulling back, we've got army engineers working on a base near Lodz, but it's not ready yet. Give it a week, son, and enjoy Paris for me.”

“Now!” He claps his hands and rubs them together. “Where's Commander Kazinski? I need to talk with her.”

“Here, sir.” Ice says, walking up to join you- her helmet held in the crook of her arm. You grin slightly at the sight.

“Good. Let's head up to your office, we've got some things to discuss.” Nixon says, then snaps his fingers. “Before I forget, son, here.”

He hands you a roll of bills- military payment currency, or MPC, though they're all current and fresh. “Won that off some boys in London playing poker. Use it in Paris.” He grins. “Spread the wealth, that's what I say.”
