A woman's hand trails down your face, gently, lovingly, and you wonder what the Hell's going on. Opening your eyes, you see the woman from your dreams, twenty-something, dark hair, almost like a younger version of your mother- you blink.

Now you've got your back pressed against a metal wall as someone in the distance is firing a Type 89 at you. Your hands tighten around an M4A1, and for a moment you almost know what's going on. You close your eyes and take a breath, and open them again.

The woman is curled up on you, now, running a finger down your neck.

“Declan, love,” she says against your chest. “You've come so close, so, so many times, Dec. This isn't the last roll of the dice or the last draw of your cards, darling, but it's so near.” You take a breath to respond, but she lays a finger on your lips, and then you're suddenly elsewhere.

Something's ripped into your stomach and you can feel the life draining out of you. You look down and you're holding your guts in your hands, desperately trying to shove them back inside where they belong and it's pointless it's all so pointless you don't know why you keep trying if you're just going to end up failing and-

“Shush now, dearest one, shush,” she quiets your harsh gasps with a kiss, soft and slow and warm and she's delightful and heavenly and then she pulls away and gives you one long look. “Things might work out for the better, here and now, and then we'll always be together.”

You jerk awake, sweating bullets and wishing you could just stop having dreams altogether. After that delightfully insane experience, you don't want breakfast. Your morning routine sees you slowly manage to reassemble some grasp of the here and now, and you manage to remember what day it is and what's going on-

The carrier groups of the Taffy Three and Over the Rainbow are supposed to link up later today, as they made radio contact sometime in the night. You've been avoiding Mari after the debacle in front of her Evangelion, and you should probably do something to at least let her know you're not always a self-loathing twat.

Also, I had this thought some time ago, but what kind of triple idiot actually TOLD Shinji we died? Shit, nobody tells Shinji ANYTHING, but they tell him our fate? That ain't right. The only ways this makes sense is if Misato let it slip (in which case it is her own damn fault Shinji was all depressed and shit) or if Gendo outright told Shinji, in which case the man's got a plan, and Misato should be glad that at least her fate isn't being manipulated with bullets and a smothering.

>>33726048
Additionally, Shinji could stand to learn a few lessons from this:
1. Anyone you even remotely care about can end up dead. Make the best use of your time with them.
2. The angels are not the only things that can kill people: people also kill people. Accidents and bricks-falling-from-the-sky kill people too. Many have already died. It's no use to dwell on them, but if you are able to, you should at least try to prevent more from dying.

I dunno. Sometimes plane explosions can be used to distract from other issues, and the news will spam the shit out of the plane explosion rather than anything else.

Just look at that Malaysian flight shot down in Ukraine, and how it masks the Gaza bombings.

If Misato does decide to kill you, you figure, there's nothing you can do about it. Your only hope would be appeal to a higher law, and there is no God. That you know of. You haven't seen Him or His works recently, or ever, for that matter.

You're pretty sure if you went to confession like you're supposed to you wouldn't basically be in a constant crisis of faith. While a priest could also probably help talk you through your Mari issues, that would also lead to a discussion you didn't want- namely, why you'd been leading a fourteen year old girl along. In your defense, you hadn't been TRYING to.

Shuddering silently, you turn to the small desk in the room some poor midshipman was kicked out of to make room for you, and go over the chain of events that lead to Smith trying to smother you.

You talked to Captain Karling, the Internal Affairs prick now in charge of Section Two. He made some thinly veiled threats, you did too, you exited his office, someone calls NERV-Nevada with a bomb-threat. You bought Shinji and Rei ice cream before boarding a C-141 to Nevada. The plane you were on was taxiing for takeoff when a C-130 that you were supposed to be on exploded on the ground, leading you to suspect someone was gunning for you.

You attempted to evade said someone by parachuting onto Iwo Jima, where you called a German mercenary friend of yours from your days in the Zerberus Battalion, and he flew you to outside San Diego, where you and Smith went to meet with the Commander in Chief of US Forces in the Pacific, an Admiral Jackson. He loaned you a car to take to Nevada, and after letting Johann know what was up, you headed for NERV-Nevada.

Once there, you tried to begin to investigate after meeting with the Base Commander and the Fourth, Mari.

From the loose psychological profile you've been able to form, she might have an Electra complex, but really you're a shitty psychologist and that degree was basically something to do while in the various hospitals you wound up in, and the best you've done is self-medicate with alcohol, so you don't fucking know.

Turning your attention from your issues and back to the coherent story you're trying to assemble, you ponder the investigation which really was basically a dead end and you only managed to keep things from going tits up because you got lucky and managed to shoot the right guys at the right time in the right place.

But then Smith tried to smother you while Mari slept on the bed across the room from yours and you nearly killed Smith in front of her.

Summed up, Nevada was a clusterfuck that didn't end with everyone horribly dead because you got lucky a couple of times.

That can't happen again, you decide. And then an Able Seaman or something knocks on your door. You let him in, and he salutes. Resisting the urge to tell him you work for a living, he looks spooked.

“Sir, we've made contact with the Over the Rainbow. The Second Child and her handler have requested to meet you and the Fourth at your earliest possible convenience. “

“Can you let the Fourth know I'll meet her on the flight deck? The Second and her handler can come to us.”

“Of course, sir,” the young man tells you affirmatively, and then he's off. You rise slowly from the chair at the desk, look over the report you penned one last time, and hope that will satisfy Misato. She won't be arriving until later, thankfully. You've got some time to kill until the Second and her handler arrive, so you head for a hangar bay. A damage control team is practicing fire fighting. You nod at them, and they nod at you. Out of respect, you don't light up a cigarette.

You stare out at the open ocean, and wonder what the Second's like. Her profile reported a highly intelligent, physically capable pilot. Reading between the lines, everyone likes her. You wonder if that's an act or if she's genuinely likeable. Shrugging, you start wandering up to the flight deck, taking your time.

Mari's up there waiting for you. Struggling to figure out what to do, you settle for ignoring her for now from behind your sunglasses, safe in her inability to see your eyes. She eyes you out of the corner of her eye. She looks like she wants to say something, but gives up in favor of shooting you one last look, then turning back to stare at the approaching helicopter.

The backwash from the rotors is annoying, but since the pilot landed as far away as possible, it's not so bad. From the rear, two people emerge- an adult male, and a thirteen or fourteen year old girl. You can almost smell the tension between Mari and the Second, and then realize why they resemble each other- they're probably distantly related. Huh.

[]Ask Mari about it.

For a moment, you admire the smooth lines of the rocket pods, the jutting hardness of the chain guns, and the deadliness of the helicopter. And then you turn to the man standing next to the Second, and exchange handshakes.

“I'm Kaji Ryoji, and this is Asuka Langley Soryhu, the Second Child.”

“Declan Cryan, Section Two. This is the Fourth, Mari Illustrious Makinami.” While you and Ryoji exchange pleasantries, the two Children begin some sort of tense stand off, both standing like they're ready to kill the other.

“QRF, asset protection, or investigations?” He asks you. Fool, did he not study your file? For some reason, he looks familiar.

“All three,” you tell him. “My background left me with top-tier skills in the first two, but not so much the third.”

“Excellent. It's nice to be working with another professional. Scientists don't always make the best conversation.”

“Understandable. So what's the Second like?”

“She's intelligent, but she can be annoying. She's not the best with personal space, and she tries too hard to be a grown up. She'll never be a teenager again, she should enjoy it. How's the Fourth?”

“I know what that's like. The Fourth is intelligent, too. Probably smarter than me,” you add, then go on. “She seems to think I'm some kind of hero, and frankly I don't like it. I've never been a hero.”

Further conversation is interrupted by the two Children moving from the spot they had been in to you and your possibly new friend. They appear to have come to some sort of truce regarding pecking order. Mari goes to greet Ryoji, and the Second moves to greet you.

“I'm Asuka,” she tells you with a self-confident smile.

She stares at you. You wonder how you're keeping a straight face. Struggling internally not to giggle like an inane cunt, you watch as she goes from struggling to accept it to struggling to figure out how to tell you you're lying.

“I would have heard something if Ireland was creating soldiers from beef and dirt,” she finally says with a disdainful sniff.

“You didn't because nothing like that ever happened. I'm joking, Miss Soryhu. Cryan. Declan M. Cryan, at your service.”

“Well,” she says doubtfully. “You're tall, but I doubt you're a better shot than my Kaji. What's the M. stand for?”

“Absolutely nothing,” you tell her firmly, and gracefully let Kaji being a better shot than you slide. “Are you getting along with Mari?”

“The Fourth,” Asuka tells you, and something like anger flashes across her face, “might be technically better trained than I am, but I am a college graduate and the better pilot, and once we get to Tokyo-3, you shall see!”

“I'm sure I will,” you tell her, and pat her on the head. Your stomach alerts you to its existence again, and you're glad Misato isn't here yet to chew your head off in front of God and everybody.

>See if you can't get everyone herded down to the galley.

“Is anyone hungry?” You ask. Ryoji shoots you a look, like he knows you want everyone stuffing their faces so you don't have to talk, but a chorus of agreement hits you, and you grin. “Awesome. Carrier food is pretty okay. I've definitely had worse.”

Mari is angry at you, you surmise, when she doesn't ask you when or where you had worse food. That, or she can imagine. Either way, at least she's not trying to burn your couch. Leading everyone down to the galley, you manage to catch it between breakfast and lunch. The cooks manage to throw together some sort of brunch that's fairly okay, and you wind up sitting across from Asuka while Mari grills Kaji about his time in Germany.

“So you're from Ireland, Special Agent Cryan?” You look mournfully at the egg sandwich you had put together in hopes of eating, and sigh internally. So much for enjoying your food.

“Yes. Northern Ireland. I'm a subject of the British Crown.”

“How's it feel to be working with someone that's saved you Brits twice?” You look at her askance for a moment.

“What?” You ask slowly. She can't really be referring to-

“The World Wars! America is back-to-back World War Champs,” she insists. Mari looks decidedly angry, and you stifle a grimace.

How to handle this, you wonder. Thankfully, you're saved when Ryoji chimes in with a well timed comment.

“Well, I don't know, how's it feel to be working with a citizen of the country that burned Washington DC to the ground?” Forcing back a chuckle, you let Ryoji deftly distract Asuka while you eat as quickly as possible. That done, you lean back and eye the time. Another couple hours or so until Misato arrives. Damn. How to distract two teenage girls?

Gods, no.

Taffy 3 was the name of an escort carrier squadron that engaged the center fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy off Samar, in the Philippine Sea. It was a battle they had absolutely no business being in, and even less business winning.

They drove off the center fleet, but at a huge cost.

>>
>>33732041
A couple of stories that kind of drive the point home how ridiculous the whole thing was? When their air wings ran out of ammunition, the pilots ended up making dry runs and one of the airmen resorted to firing his .38 revolver out the window.

After attacking the battleship Kongo on its own and later being sunk, sailors on the destroyer Johnston reported that the officers of a nearby Japanese ship saluted them as they passed, still in the middle of the battle. As if the idea of a destroyer attacking a battleship and surviving wasn't already insane enough.

Thanks for being patient while I resolved my internet issues.

>

They're both officers in their respective services, the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe. They probably know all sorts of inane shit. Playing on this, you ask a question.

“So, can anyone tell me why the ship is named the Taffy Three?” Mari and Asuka both look at you, and almost as one start speaking simultaneously.

“It's named after Task Force Three, which fought the centermost action, the battle off Samar, at the battle of Leyete Gulf-”

“They had no business doing such, of course, as under gunned and outnumbered as they were-”

“-but they achieved victory, even if at huge cost to themselves-”

“-the survivors wouldn't be rescued for another two days, after suffering even more casualties to sharks, heatstroke, and lack of water-”

You throw your hands up in defeat, and they look at you again.”In my defense,” you tell them, “I'm a ground pounder. I left this ship business to men more inclined for it than I.”

“Pleb,” Mari tells you disdainfully. “You call yourself a loyal Brit, and you don't even like ships?”

“My status as a plebeian aside, how do you both know so much about this?”

“History is interesting,” Asuka tells you, “but I prefer mathematics.”

“History's interesting,” Mari confirms. “I can't believe you don't like it. Can you even name some of the battle honors the Royal Irish have accrued?”

>Yes.

“Yes,” you tell her. “I can. You want the lineage as well or what we earned ourselves?”

“Lineage,” Mari grins at you evilly. You give her a shit-eating grin.

“Do the words Somme, Talavera, Ypres, Suvla, and Withdrawal to Escaut mean anything to you?” Mari looks put out that you're passingly familiar with the Regiment's history, and shrugs in defeat.

“This has been interesting,” Ryoji declares before Mari can throw anything else at you, “but we've got to go. The NERV person that will be showing up to oversee transfer of the Pilots and Evangelions will be arriving fairly soon, and I want to be on the Over the Rainbow to greet them.”

“Understandable,” you tell him, and the both of you stand and shake hands. “Nice meeting you, mate,” and he nods.

“You as well.” The Children stand as well and follow you and Ryoji up to the flight deck, where you shake hands once again. The Second and Ryoji board the helicopter, and you turn to Mari.

“What do you think of the Second?”

“She's a bitch,” she tells you without a backward glance at the helicopter.

“Well, they say that those you hate are the ones most like yourself at your worst, you know. Besides, what makes you think that?” She scowls at you.

“She's a bitch,” she insists. “She's arrogant, proud of skills with no real-world testing, and completely infatuated with that man!”

“Oh?” You raise an eyebrow. “Like you with me?” This is going to end well, you can tell, but better to force the issue now, you think, and get everything in the open. Now that the helicopter's gone, flight operations are resuming, slowly, but they are.

“That's different. You're-” She falls silent for a moment, and you don't press. She'll get there in her own time “My father and uncle are never around. You came out of nowhere and you were this tall soldier with killer eyes and you took bullets that saved my life because no one tampered with anything and I don't like liking you, you bastard,” she says in a rush, and takes a breath. “But it's there and I think it would be best if we avoided each other for now, so I can think this through. Whatever this is,” she adds with disgust.

You want to say something. You want to tell her that it'll be okay. But you don't. You're her guard and here to make sure she's okay to pilot. You're not here to hold her hand and whisper sweet nothings. You're here to make hard decisions and hard sacrifices to keep the pilots alive.

At the end of the day, when all's tallied up, you're just a pawn there to be taken out to delay the bishops and rooks from being taken out. And you're okay with that. It's what they pay you for, it's better than kicking your heels doing nothing in a third-world shithole, and it's a fight with fighting, stopping the destruction of humanity.

You want to call Shinji, but telling someone 'sorry for playing dead and leaving you hanging for like, a week,' over the phone doesn't really cut it. Besides, you want to talk to him face to face so you can high five him for killing the Fifth Angel. There's not much else to do. You don't want to talk to Mari anymore for now, afraid of sticking your foot in your mouth. Yelling at the Evangelion will only have you garner odd looks from the Navy dudes on the ship.

You head back down to your room and kick off your shoes, collapsing onto the bed... thing. You were never the best at Navy terminology. You spend a moment with your face in the pillow, before rolling over, uncomfortable. You want a cigarette, but this isn't your bed. The poor midshipman would probably get flogged or something for having cigarette ashes in his bed after you left.

Fucking Navies and shit, with brutal hazing and shit. You don't know, you were British Army, not Navy. You fall asleep, visions of interservice rivalry dancing in your head.

You open your eyes, and you're standing across from the woman that you last saw riding you like you were a stallion, standing over some sort of empty chasm, staring at you.

“Oh my darling Declan. So cunning, so determined- so doomed to fail, but so brave.” You swallow as she steps across the gaping canyon like it isn't even there, and runs a hand down your arm. It tingles and feels warm, and you're seized by the strangest urge to kiss her. You force it back, and look at her. Really look at her. She's some kind of amalgamation of all the women you've ever known, and she looks up at you.

“What is this? What's going? This isn't tableflip,” you declare petulantly. It's your mind, right? You should be allowed to be petulant, at least once or twice.

“Oh my brave Declan Cryan, always marching forward, head held high. I'll show you, love.” She leans up and kisses you, and she's everything she was before, soft and warm and heaven and delight and you fall backwards.

You land, and watch the world end. Tokyo-3 burns in the fires of an N2 bombardment. Nine white Evangelions rip apart one red one. There is no blue one. The purple one fails to act. A huge white First Child begins growing from the ground, and as the first people in the Geofront begin dying, you avert your eyes. “Third Impact. A controlled version, instrumented by humans themselves, to attempt to bridge the gaps between everyone. At the heart, Shinji Ikari. “And then- you. Bleeding, dying slowly, you make a deal with me as I gather everyone to my bosom. Send you back, you said, slowly fading. Send you back so you could stop it. And I could have you for eternity. Both of us together forever.”

You watch as what she describes happen- you see yourself, dark hair, gray eyes, fist shoved into a hole in your chest as you desperately make a deal with something from beyond your comprehension.

And then it's all gone. The end of the world, everything. It's just the four of you, two Declan Cryans, and two whatever or whoever she is. You're watching as the you with blood stains on his chest is kissed slowly, and brought to the ground by the other her.

>inb4 this is only like loop number 8

So, the easiest two solutions to this that I can see are learning to accept things and just preparing Shinji as best we can or killing Gendo and SEELE.

Given this link to Lilith, how much are we going to freak when we meet Kaworu?

“How many times? How many times have I tried?”

You're sitting on a park bench now, one arm curled around the thing that did this to you, and she nuzzles against your side.

“I lost count around the fourteenth thousand, darling.”

“So I can keep trying until I get it right, right?” She looks up at you, then, and plants a slow, lingering kiss along your neck.

“I'm afraid not, love of mine. This isn't the last draw of the cards or the last roll of the dice for you, but it's getting close. I'm getting tired. I can't say when, but it's soon. And then you'll be with me forever.” She shudders against you with a sad smile, and you feel something inside you wither and die.

“Well the bastards I'm up against have to get it right every time. I only have to get it right once, right?”

“Right, love. But what happens if you fail for the final time before you get it right?”

“Then I'm yours forever,” you tell her grimly, and stand. “Now wake me up. I've got work to do.”

“Oh Declan, always so determined. But you're tired, too. The debt on your soul is heavy, so heavy. It hurts, doesn't it? I can keep you with me forever now, you know.”

[]”No. Work to be done. I'll be damned if I quit.”
[]”I- I've tried and tried. Let someone else carry this torch.”
>>
>>33736782
Well, while we're metagaming, killing Shinji MIGHT work, but SEELE might just be able to trigger 3rd impact without unit01.

Killing Gendo won't do anything, ultimately Gendo didn't have much to do with 3rd impact besides getting Adam in touch with Lilith. Kaiji is currently bringing Adam to Geno, so unless we kill Kaiji now and dump Adam into the ocean or something, we'll have done fuck-all. This might even turn out worse, too.

Preparing Shinji might be the best thing, maybe.

“No,” you tell her. “Work to be done. I'll be damned if I quit. The woods are dark, lovely, and deep. And I've miles to go before I sleep.” Turning, you lift her up by her arms and crush her against your chest, kissing her hard. When you let go, she's blushing faintly, and you shoot her a shit-eating grin.

“Hold on to your butt, I'm just getting started.”

And then you're awake. You look at the ceiling, force yourself out of the bed, and try not to puke your fucking guts up. You slip your shoes on, and pad to the flight deck, where a helicopter is landing. Misato steps out as soon as the bird is on the deck, and she looks distinctly angry. Aw yes, nothing like an angry woman to reaffirm you're alive.

She locks onto you like anti-aircraft missiles lock onto civilian liners, and begins stomping her way across to you. Grinning at her, you wish you could knock back a jigger or two of whiskey. She smacks you, hard, as soon as she's within striking distance. You let her.

“You stupid son of a bitch,” she yells. “I couldn't just tell Shinji you were still alive after he'd been told you were dead! What was I supposed to do?!” You shrug silently, and let her smack you again. She continues yelling for a couple of minutes, torn between tears and sheer rage. Finally, she stops, her chest heaving, and glares at you.

“Well,” you tell her. “I'm certainly glad to be alive.” Then you kiss her, hard, and she leans into for a moment, before punching you square in the fucking nuts. You stagger backwards, hard, even as one sailor behind you lets loose with a whistle.

“Act like a fucking professional,” Misato hisses, as she steps around you. “I need to go talk to the Admiral in charge of this carrier group, and then you're going to tell me what the Hell you were thinking.” You take a knee, hands cradled protectively around your junk. What the Hell were you think with what, you want to ask. But you don't.

Grinning, because you just kissed the smoking hot Tactical Commander and aren't dead, you raise one fist slowly into the air, and pump it up and down once. A pair of school uniform shoes appear in front of you while you're stilling facing the deck, and you dread looking up.

When you do, you see Shinji, staring at you, with two fourteen year old guys standing next to him. Eying them for a moment, you shoot him a grin. And then he punches you in the jaw and you go backwards, wondering what you did to make God hate you. Probably something to do with fucking something beyond your knowledge and comprehension to make a deal involving the end of the world, but you're digressing.

When you finally stand, he's cradling his punching hand in the other.

“Gotta form a tighter fist,” you offer, “and punch the soft parts. Punching the soft parts helps.”

“Cryan-san, you jerk, I thought you were dead!”

[]”Well, see, about that...”
[]”I was! I'm not now, see? You just punched me!”

It's called 'Shiny red button' syndrome.

If there's a big obvious button that does something, there will be a line of morons to press it because it's a button that exists to be pressed.

The CONSEQUENCES of actually pushing the button are irrelevant. It is a button, therefore it must be pressed. The tiny inner lizard brain associated with such primitive thoughts as 'eat fuck fight' short circuits in some people at the sight of an unpressed button.

On /tg/, these people are almost always the majority. They might even be highly intelligent, capable beings when not exposed to a Button. However, when the Button enters their field of view they go after it like a starving man after a steak.

>>33737597

He nods, and then grimaces. “Why did you kiss Misato-san?” You shrug.

“I'm alive, Shinji, and sometimes you gotta do something to remind yourself of that.”

“You sent a note? You're sure?”

“Positive, mate,” you tell him. “Why don't you introduce me to your friends?”

“Oh! Sorry, these are Kensuke Aida and Toji Suzuhara.” You shake both their hands, and introduce yourself. Kensuke seems like a nerd, and Toji's wearing a tracksuit. Probably an athlete, then.

“Special Agent Cryan, Section Two. Toji, I think there's a basketball game in Hangar Bay 2, if you're interested, and Kensuke, I think there's an F-18 being taken apart down in Hangar Bay 1.” They exchange looks, and then shake their heads.

“Nah, we'll stick with Shinji, if it's cool with you, sir. Bros gotta stick together.” You nod approvingly.

“Good,” you tell them. You turn on an instinct, and see Misato not so much storming towards you instead of gliding sedately along. Ah. This must be the calm before the storm, then. Turning back towards Shinji and bros, you tell them, “Run along, then, lads. I've got to talk to the Tactical Commander.”

She advances upon you as the three teenagers behind you beat a hasty retreat. “Tell me what you were thinking regarding playing dead, and then explain your thought processes behind kissing me, Special Agent.” And then your blood runs cold as you recall she can demote you.

The child is then bitten by the rattlesnake inside the cookie jar, and spends the breif remainder of his life being beaten and mocked by the man who offered him the trapped cookie-jar for daring to think a cookie was in the waiting.

That's the kinda logic we're talking about. Actively screwing someone for picking a choice offered under false pretenses.

By disagreeing with me, you said that kind of behavior is perfectly acceptable. I'm not going to bother responding to you further, because if you can't follow a chain of basic logic to it's conclusion (situation is bad, bad situation needs to be avoided) then there's just no hope for you.

You head for the bridge at a sprint. When you pass Misato, you give her a jaunty wave. When you make it to the bridge, you have them start calling for the Fourth to report there in between calls of “ALL HANDS REPORT TO BATTLESTATIONS.” Making sure they'll take care of Mari if she arrives before Misato, you have them call for the Third to report to the flight deck.

Aircraft carriers are huge. This is one of the immutable facts of human life post WWII. Supercarriers, are, in the words of one wise American sailor, “Fucking huge as shit, dude, like holy shit.” You can't deny the wisdom his words held. Today, you can curse the drive that made the Americans build everything bigger than everyone else.

Your hunt for Shinji is desperate and leaves you sweating and fearful for his life. When you finally find him and his friends, he's staring at a map of the Taffy Three, trying to figure out where he is. Grabbing him by the arm, you sling him over one shoulder and take off running again, Aida and Suzuhara doing their best to follow.

Clearing the way in front of you by bellowing as loudly as possible, when you deposit Shinji in front of the bridge, you're panting like a convict that had just been chased across state lines. Misato doesn't spare a glance at you. She's ordering the Fouth and Second into their Evangelions, and Shinji balls his fists up, feeling useless.

“Welcome to my world,” you tell him as the bridge swirls with chaos. “I hate having to sit and watch you kids drive those goddamn things when I'm paid to soldier and protect you.”

“Well, the Second and Fourth should be able to protect us, right?”

“Right,” you tell him. “Until the enemy's dead, not much we can do. I'm stepping out to smoke.”

“Have fun,” he tells you, and you make your way from the bridge and into some sort of controlled chaos of a sort entirely different than what you're used to.

WELL I FOR ONE AM GOING TO UPVOTE YOUR QUEST, SER, mostly because it made that one guy hilariously mad, keep doing more of that
>>
Dammit, I was gonna write my usual fun shit people liked but the shiny red button and the resulting shitstorm kinda sucked all the fun desire to write out of me.

Sorry guys. Maybe if I catch the next thread.

>I'm going to encourage poor QMing practices.

I know that one dude kinda overreacted, but there was an entirely valid point underneath all that anger.

I mean, aside from that one.... hiccup, it was a good thread. I was gonna upvote too. But really? Claiming you want to upvote the thread out of spite? Are you five or something?
>>

Yeah, it might be best to save that for the next thread.

BECAUSE HOLY SHIT, WE'VE GOT A CHANCE TO GIVE SHINJI HIS BEST FISHING TRIP EVA!

Poor QMing practice didn't give that anon autism, he was born with that gift.

Not that guy, but offering a Red Button guarantees it will be pressed 100% of the time. It could have a sign next to it that flat declares it will kill everyone in the Quest you like, and morons will line up around the block to beat their faces against the button until their heads are unidentifiable mulch. I mean, look at all the posts of 'no, fucking button, goddammit'.

It's one thing to let us shoot ourselves in the foot. It's entirely another to give us a loaded gun and say all the cool kids are blowing their toes off.

I can pretty much guarantee that if you didn't offer the option up on a silver platter, it wouldn't have occurred to anybody. By suggesting it, you presented it as an equally valid choice as anything else. This combination is why the button is both deadly and hated. It will draw uninvolved people walking by into the storm of smashing the entire control panel the button is on to try and make it activate faster.

Someone is butthurt.

I get what you're saying, but honestly, if I'd had her kick you in the dick and stomp on your throat and demote you and bust you to scrubbing latrines on level whatthefuckever in NERV HQ, okay, be pissed.

But, "That's a thing. Don't do it again," is literally all that happened. People pressed the button and they panicked. Besides, praise in public, punish in private, right?

She was pissed, yeah, but you don't chew a subordinate out that's delivered as consistently as you guys have been in front of foreign officers and whatnot.

If you honestly think I'm butthurt, I'm not going to burst your bubble.

The real problem isn't we did something stupid, the problem is the existence of the red button entirely.

That's the crux of the thing right there. The button itself.

The button has a long and storied history with Quest threads. Some have treated it comically, some have used it to screw people worse than you just described. The presence of the button skews the likelyhood of the choice going one way or another so dramatically the choice might as well not exist.

And therin lies the problem. Shiny Red Buttons are basically railroading that pretends it's an actual choice. Every case of it coming up will be greeted by exactly what the fuck happened here: a mix of samefag, morons, and mornic samefags spamming the button vote while everyone else either begs them to stop, desperately tries to counterspam a remotely sensible option, or begins screaming angrily at the guy who thought triggering button syndrome was a good idea.

That's why I was personally upset earlier. I saw the choice and my first thought was 'goddammit, you're better than this'. And then I had a long ass shitstorm proving me wrong. I don't even know if I was thinking about you or my fellow players either, if I'm being completely honest.

One is just a fluke, now 3-5+ in each thread? That'd be repeating SWQ's dork ages.

>I don't even know if I was thinking about you or my fellow players either, if I'm being completely honest.

You weren't. You were being the typical jackass that whines all the time in a quest thread about how nobody listens to YOUR suggestions, about how EVERYONE ELSE is an idiot, but not YOU, you're fucking sublime.

Christ, get over yourself.
