Stage 20: A Priestess, a Scholar, and a Warlord walk into a Temple....

You eat a little bit, less because of nerves than because you don't want to fight on a full stomach, and watch your family. Akari is less jocular, but smiling and Yui is nearly hip to hip with her. Yui's gotten a lot of comments about her eyes, which she boldly makes up all sorts of outrageous lies about. Er Yin is feeding Miko-Kiku from their shared plate, which seems to have calmed the delicate two-hundred and more old dragonette immensely. She looks adorable, sitting in the Void dragonette's lap like that. Kiki-hime is siting on a side to herself this time, smiling, but you can see the worry in her glances, the concern in her eyes. You smile reassuringly, and let the fan of your tail slide across her thigh slowly. She smiles uncertainly and you give her a little tickle, which makes her blush and giggle.

You glance at your right palm, the sliver of ruby shining from the place where Yui healed the cut you made when you made her your blood-sister. Well, at least it's on matching sides. Not that you could have managed to cut your left hand. Which reminds you, you'll need to dress appropriately for a fight – you're still in the black silk kimono with the blue dragon trim. Of course, there is something far more critical to decide before that.
>>

You are going to take one of your loved ones into Hinata-hakase's temple with you to serve as both second and witness. Between the rather fearsome guardian of your apartment complex, the landlord who won't let anyone harass her tenants, and the rest remaining here, there really is no safer place in the city, unless you count the Meiji Shrine. Taking them all to the temple is a logistical nightmare, but you considered that too. This is the best compromise. Mostly because if you left alone they'd all show up, because that's what you'd do in a fuckin' heartbeat.

[] Take Kiku-chan. She knows Hinata the best and she's got the training, and she could use some Ryukusa time.
[] Take Er Yin. She's probably recovered by now, and while she won't make a great witness, she's got the magical know how to cope.
[] Take Yui. She's tough, strong, will obey orders, and has a bit of her own magic, as well as that nifty cloud.
[] Take Akari. She's been your right hand dragonette for years, even before you were on dangerous missions. And being indestructible (to a point) helps.
[] Take Kiki-hime. The safest place for your principle is at your side. And despite all that has happened, she's still got the most people after her.

[X] Take Kiku-chan. She knows Hinata the best and she's got the training, and she could use some Ryukusa time.

With the extra power gained by splitting your Pearl, you've been told that you can take both of the demigods in Barrier Combat even without calling on the power of Horobi. Taking on that mantle is an action, once taken, will irreversibly transmute you from a dragonette into a demigod, and undoubtedly cause a massive rush on the part of any enemies Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado had – which is not coincidentally easily matched up to a lot of the people you are in the process of pissing off in multiple ways – to take your head and the heads of anyone with you.

All of whom you care about a whole freakin' lot.

When dinner is finished, and the dessert of green tea ice cream served and devvoured by all, and the thanks are given, you stand up and walk around the table. “Sorry, Er Yin-sensei, I have to borrow your bed-warmer for a little while.” As Kiku-chan's hair bursts into flaming activity – so cool! – her sister blushes and looks down, hiding her smile, while Yui blinks and whispers a question to Akari – who responds with what sounds like a slight tail-swat to Yui's rear, despite the fact she is sipping her tea and doesn't otherwise indicate she's moved.

“Itaiii....” Kiki-hime is confused by Yui's reaction, and gives her a questioning look. Yui has the grace to blush and shake her head, holding her hands out. “Nothing, Kiki-hime, nothing!”

Akari smiles to herself, and to you, because she undoubtedly knows you'd look.
>>
You help Kiku-chan out of Er Yin's lap with a hand. “Please return her in one piece, Ryukusa-sama. I have become somewhat fond of her.” Kiku-chan turns and kisses Er Yin deeply, an unusual display of public affection immediately returned. Kiki-hime is turning a shade of red you more commonly associate with her sister's hair, and Yui watches with great interest.

You give a salute to the Void dragonette. “Aye-aye, miss!” Kiku-hime gives you a glare that could melt steel, and you blink at her non-plussed as she ineffectually stomps towards your bedroom. “You know, she might like you a little, Er Yin-sensei,” you commend at you follow Kiku-chan to your bedroom.

A bigger apartment might be a good idea. Maybe talk to the Landlady and see if he's had a move-out, later. Pausing in front of your door, you look down at Miko-Kiku. “No laughing or I will turn you over my knee and turn your derrière as red as your hair, Kiku-chan.”

She looks at you dubiously, as you open the door, and then stops, taking in the incredibly feminine room. But it is not the room which captures the most of her attention, but the painting on your vanity. You walk in, the tightness in your belly slowly relaxing as she looks at the delicately done painting of Akari in the pond.

“This is beautiful, Ryukusa-aniki.” You sigh, but don't bother correcting her. It never works. “This was a few years ago?”
>>
>>33721792
Sometimes you have to work at remembering the loli-dragonette is freakin' ancient. “Hai. She doesn't know about it, and I plan on giving it to Yui-niji-chan when we have a place we can truly call home.” You open the closet, and take several sets of clothing out of ~Nowhere~ to hang up. “I am sorry if it makes you uncomfortable, but I have some questions about Hinata-hakase and her temple, while I get ready.”

“Hai, Ryukusa-aniki.” Turning you see she is kneeling in the center of the room, but not looking at you. Her head is lowered and her hands, hidden entirely by her sleeves, seem to be resting on her lap. You think. You're pretty sure.

[] Ask about her relationship with Hinata-hakase.
[] Sit with her and see if you can find out what exactly is wrong.
[] Ask her about the Temple of Forgotten Stones and Flowers.
[] Gently point out you are going to duel Kushinada and maybe fight with Hidesato, not Hinata-hakase.
[] Ask her what's bothering her so much that not even her Clan training can't help her hide it.

[X] Sit with her and see if you can find out what exactly is wrong.
[XX] Ask her about the Temple of Forgotten Stones and Flowers.
[X] Gently point out you are going to duel Kushinada and maybe fight with Hidesato, not Hinata-hakase.

You carefully hang up the outfits you've called up, and glance back at her. She's been both subdued and worried all evening, and it is all about Hinata, you suspect. Which is kind of understandable. She's served at Hinata's temple for at least one-hundred years, maybe more, and they may have been friends before that.

“You know, I'm not really going there to fight with Hinata-hakase. It's kind of her temple, and I may be a dumb lizard, but not even I am that dumb. Well, usually. I'm just going there to beat the crap out of a couple of demigods. Only one if I'm lucky.” Her smile is rather wan despite your attempt at humor; she doesn't even call you stupid.

Setting the remaining outfits back in ~Nowhere~ you walk over to her and settle down slowly, sitting next to her rather than in front of her. “Tell me about the temple, Kiku-chan?” You run your fingers through her soft hair, and along her horn lightly. She relaxes, but not nearly enough.

“The Temple of Forgotten Stones and Flowers is a shrine dedicated to those kami and youkai who are not venerated very often by enough people. It serves to sustain them and appease them so they do not turn on humankind. The specific ones change and shift over the years, as humans remember or forget those spirits and gods that the tales and stories they tell speak of.” She looks up at you as you stroke her hair and her horn, and then off to the side, her golden eyes shimmering. “The youkai around the temple are dangerous because they are desperately hungry. Not merely physically, but spiritually.”
>>
>>33722088
Well, that explains the various rumors and fears that surround the temple, especially for spirit-children of any stripe. Half flesh, half spirit, any dragon-born and oni-born would be incredibly filling for any starving youkai.

“The temple donations are often given to various creative anime and manga producers and writers, to help keep the strange and less known youkai and kami in the public eye.” She squirms as you study

“That explains a lot of Junji Ito and Uroboshi....” you murmur as you look down at her, your hand lightly gathering the quartet of thin, delicate braids. She glances at you and you can sense, more than hear or feel, her repressing her desire to fidget.

You move so you are directly behind her, and undo the braids. She looks down, shifting slightly. “You are starting to worry me. Are you so certain that I am going to have to deal with Hinata-hakase harshly, Kiku-chan, or are you worried that Oba-san or Hinata-hakase will come for Er Yin Long?”

Ah, there it is – she's worried about Er Yin Long. You recognize that tension in anyone now.

When she doesn't immediately answer you gently pull on her braids; she gasps and her head tilts back and you lean over to look into her bright golden eyes.

Note to self: Kiku likes her hair being pulled.

“Surely you're not doubting ME, the invincible Ryuu Ryukusa, are you, Kiku-chan?” you kiss her forehead and slowly release the pull on her braids, though her breathing has sped up and she is blushing quite a bit. “After all, you still believe in the you that believes in me, right?”

“You mangled that beyond all repair, baka-dragon,” she says softly, though there's just a hint of bite in that accusation. Baby steps, but still steps.

“....really, you watch TTGL? I thought you miko were supposed to be all pure and stuff, she says to the masochistic submissive as she braids her hair.” That produces a soft laugh, and her hair shivers a little. “Hey now, I'm working here, stop with the whole head on fire thing, you pervert.”

“Baka, hentai-dragon.” That sounded a lot more like the Kiku-chan you adore and tease. She sighs and looks straight ahead. “I am worried because Oba-san has powerful ties to Hinata-hakase, stronger and older than my friendship with her.”

You consider carefully. While you won't have access to a lot of the coolest – and strongest – abilities outside of a barrier....you're still a great deal more than you were the last time you faced Kushinada. It's possible, even probable that could could take her outside a Barrier with your left hand being what it is now. That still leaves Hidesato and Hinata as very large unknowns – they both have a lot of power outside of a barrier, being trained in magic.

“If it makes you feel better, I will try to extract promises and make sure none of them can tell. If you believe Hinata-hakase is really that trustworthy, I will make her promise not to reveal anything about Er Yin Long. As for the other two....well, I'll make sure they're not going to tell anyone anything, Barrier or not.” You finish her braids, and then rise up on your knees and wrap your arms about her neck. “I worked hard to bring her back to you. I will work just as hard to make sure no one can take her away from you, just as I promised each and every one of you. I want you to be happy and safe, Kiku-chan, not worried like this.”

She lets her tiny hands slip free of her sleeves and places them on your arm, much as Yui did in this very room not an hour ago. “I believe in you, Ryukusa-aniki.”

“Good, because proving my worthiness to you would be a bitch after the things I've managed to do already. I mean, next you'll want me to fight Orochi-oji-san, or shooting extra suns out of the sky, or some weird stuff like that.” You kiss the side of her neck and she makes a soft, delicate whining noise, and you give her another squeeze.

So tempting.

I just had an idea: We should see if we can't use the temple as base of operation. As a rising deity, there is much we can offer to the half-forgotten youkai and kami (and they're desperate to stay relevant).

I say we look into it

It's bullying AND she likes it
>She makes you cry, makes you laugh, causes you to scream. And you love her for it all, even the things that make you cry and bleed.

We are definitely behind on our game as a god of doom.

[X] Time to get dressed! No more fooling....well, not much fooling around.
[X] Just one little love bite.
[] Cool it, and get back to dressing.
[X] Ask her how she became friends with Hinata-hakase.
[X] Give her horn a lick, and tell her you really do love her and Er Yin.

You give her another soft kiss to the side of her neck, and she tilts her head slightly away, allowing you greater access....and who are you to ignore an invitation like that? You open your mouth and give her a soft, firm bite along her throat. Which she definitely wasn't expecting given that she just tried to drive her nails through your left arm. You are exceedingly glad it WAS your left arm, because you still felt it, despite the invulnerability of the flesh there. You hold her that way, like a kitten, and she squirms in place. You slowly release her and she gasps and starts breathing again.

The whole breath holding thing not being your fault at all, that was all her.

“I love Er Yin Long,” you murmur as you start to rise, “as much as I love you.” You remain crouched behind her....and then run your tongue from the base of her horn along the back side, of iy, to the tip. She makes a soft, oddly strangled sort of noise. “And don't ever forget that, Kiku-miko-chan.” She is panting, and thoroughly distracted from all worries now, as you make your way to the closet. Shedding, along the way, your kimono. And your panties.

“You seem....very close to Hinata-hakase. Even when you were young, you were close to her. May I ask how that became so, Matagama Kiku?” There is a moment of hesitation, and you add softly, “You don't have to tell me, you know.” Though you suspect the hesitation was partly due to the way your ran your tail along your leg and brush non-existent dust from your derrière.
>>
>>33722955
“Hinata-hakase was more directly involved in Ryo Clan when I was young. The spirits and kami and youkai were more honored, until the Tokugawa Shogunate started their efforts of modernization. She was less frightening and the temple was a brighter, safer, warmer place. I used to go there often, to make offerings to my mother and to the kamuy. I did not tell anyone that is what I was doing, but she knew, and she understood.” Kiku considers, glancing at you again, her gaze following your movements as you slip on something of satin and lace for underneath your clothing. “She is a reflection of her temple, in many ways. Even if she is going to do you harm, she will not deceive you about it, or lie to you. She will tell you why she is going to do this to you, and give you the opportunity to defend yourself.”

Much like a true youkai, her danger is the straightforward and vicious danger of something that is simply dangerous, rather than the sneaky, vicious, often less than obvious danger that humans or demon-born represent. “I promise I won't do anything to anger or hurt Hinata-hakase as long as she doesn't do anything to hurt my loved ones, Kiku-chan.” Sadly, you think it is the best you can do at the moment. “That's at least one promise I can make on her behalf.”

There is a long silence....

“I am afraid....I cannot promise that she won't. I do not know what the demigods have offered her. I worked very hard to ease her darker aspects. But even then there is only so much that I can do. Hinata-hakase serves a purpose, Ryukusa-aniki. I think it would be worse to kill her than to make her give you promises.” Her voice is steady and sure, and lacks the despondent note that it carried previously. Also she has a certain breathlessness to her voice that isn't exactly the sort of thing pure dragonettes would have.
>>
>>33722990
Well Kiku isn't pure at all so no mystery there.
>>
>>33722990
You smile and fasten the equally lacy satin bra, then sigh as you realize you have come tot he hardest part of the day.. This was where you hid many of your nice dresses, but you doubt a gown is appropriate for this. Though....it might be fun to shock everyone by walking out into the living room in a beautiful dress, just to prove for once and for all you're a young woman!

Nah.

“....hai, hentai-dragon....” Oh, that's a new tone. You've never heard her sound....that's what they must mean by 'mixed emotions' because she sounded pleased yet so very unhappy, and just a touch of needy too.

You move over the gowns – which Kiku, being a very wise dragonette, does not comment upon, though it could also be that you have your leg leg lifted for her to hold the leg of the tailored hakama to step into – and place a few other things in the gap there. You step into the leg of the hakama, and let her slide them up a little, before you lift your leg and point your toes for the other. Her hair is moving slightly, as if in a nonexistent breeze, and she is very careful not to touch your skin too much.

Apparently, Er Yin beat you to this game!

But watching her eyes, her slightly shaking hands, her tail-twitches, it gives you a lovely idea of what she likes to see and do. You have her wrap your breasts – not too tightly but tight enough – with silk....after you make her remove the brassier you put on. By the time she's done with those two tasks her blood is literally boiling in her veins. A light inner gi, and then the more traditional men's style kimono, which you check to make sure she has done correctly.

And then you nearly give yourself a head-smack for forgetting she grew up in the time of ACTUAL FUCKIN' SAMURAI.

You add a war fan, and your wakizashi. You kneel, and she carefully folds, tucks, and pins your hair, until you look like a very pretty young man.

Kind of disturbing, you just reverse trapped yourself. The way Kiku-chan is breathing though, you look HOT.

[x] Her turn! Reverse Trap part two!
[x] Her miko outfit is just perfect.
[X] Prettiest kimono EVER!
[] She can be the shinobi!

You stand up and take a deep breath, making sure the bindings and the accouterments aren't going to do anything weird. When you have taken care of that....

You turn towards Kiku-chan and her eyes get wide. “....noooo....” You nod and she tries to bolt. Tries, because you cheat and whip an obi from your closet and sweep it around the room, catching her around the waist and then yanking her towards you. You are careful about her sacred outfit, but you still manage to get it entirely stripped in less than fifteen seconds, and once that's done, entirely naked in less than three more.

Blushing and breathing hard Kiku-chan stares at you as you pull some very delicate golden silk and satin panties and half cup bra from ~Nowhere~ and then very slowly dress her in them. Unlike Kiku-chan, you have absolutely no qualms about touching her skin, and make sure you do so constantly and with great intent. Her breath catches, especially when you make sure that the panties are nice and snug.

“How did you know my three sizes, Ryukusa-aniki?” Her voice is very quiet and very heated.

“From the last time I undresses you of course – oh hey, careful, that'll stain the silk!” You gently pinch her nose and get the bleeding under your control before continuing. Well, at least the pressure from her blood being hot enough to scald human flesh won't give her an aneurysm.
>>
>>33723856
You pull a kimono of bright white silk and copper trim from ~Nowhere~ and gently dress her in it, the red phoenixes at her back and along her right side glistening like ruby. Rather than a dress, though, it is a boy's short kimono, and you then slip white silk pants on her, the legs ungathered and trimmed in copper as well. Finally, you pin her hair to one side of her face with a slender golden pin, until she too looks slightly boyish, though her gentle curves help reduce that just enough. A red and copper silk belt, rather than an obi makes the outfit perfect.

With the bleeding stopped, you kiss her deeply, and she responds instantly and almost violently, her hands trembling and fingers nearly clawed as she resists the urge to grab you. Yeah, that date with Er Yin and Kiku-chan is going to end VERY well, you have the feeling.

Dressed and armed, you make your way out into the living room. They have done some rearranging, and the couch is under the picture window (which never made much sense since the only thing you can see is a wall unless you are a Stone dragonette), and the table has been cleared. To your surprise, everyone is kneeling in the middle of the living room, waiting for you. Of course, whatever they had planned is disrupted by you looking like an elegant your warrior, prepared for battle and looking every bit the part of the noble samurai that your enemies are not.

Kiki-hime is turning as pink as her hair, while Yui nods sagely. Akari is staring like she's never seen you before. That counts as close as you can get to a total win.

I'm not sure stanching her nose-bleed will protect ALL the silk, Ryukusa...

“PLEASE RESCUE JINYUU-ONEE-SAMA AND COME HOME SAFE, RYUKUSA-ANIKI!” The chorus is imperfect, but earnest, and almost as one they kowtow to you. Kiku-chan is kind of flabbergasted as well, but she too goes to her knees and kowtows

[X] The D'awww, it cannot be resisted!

You stare at them and resist the urge to laugh. It was total coincidence that you dressed like this when they decided to honor you as the head of the household, but you couldn't embarrass them like that. So you gently get them up, back to sitting and bow to kiss each and every precious one upon the forehead.

Er Yin. “For Inari....”

Ryuu Yui. “....for my family....”

Ryuu Akari. “....I, Ryuu Ryukusa....”

Kumatori Kiki. “....will move the very world.”

Matagama Kiku. “I will not fail!”

With that you draw them all into a hug, and you try to ignore the sniffles and soft sobs, and merely try and hold them all, as near impossible as it is – well, having a tail helps a lot. “You all forget that I'm invincible and such....so embarrassing! But since it is my family....then it will all be as you wish. It cannot be helped at all!”

There is laughter and hugs and not a few kisses, and the sense of deja vu is nearly overwhelming, almost painful in its intensity.

Finally, you extricate yourself and Kiku-chan from the group hug (and a little more, there were an awful lot of wandering hands and tails there), and slip outside, walking to the main gate. You straighten your clothing and make sure that Kiku-chan is perfect, resisting the urge to grab her and cuddle her to death, and realize....

It's only a short walk to Shinjuku of course. On the other hand you and Kiku-chan look like you're lost out of time or going to a cos-play of some kind. Still, Tokyo sees stranger on a daily basis – and no one in Harajuku would dare cross paths with you. Even in a man's outfit, the instant they see your face, they KNOW it's you. You're even more famous than Tao Okamoto in that subset of the world.

Ironically not one of them know who you are.

The train station is as busy as every, but people give you a wide berth, though the number of looks Kiku-chan collects is unsurprising on several levels. Unlike someone who looks her age, she walks with the steadfast confidence of a dragonette, and that more than the presence of your (presumed) fake sword is what keeps you and she unmolested.

Until you get in the train of course. The problem with the later routes is the other gangs. And whole Clan Ryo is well known, you can't exactly bare your tattoos in this outfit. Kiku-chan doesn't even have tattoos, which is actually pretty remarkable, and you'll have to ask her how she managed that later. The first time someone approaches you, calling you otaku and making fun, you ignore them for a short while....but then someone gets rude.

He's only human, and that means he's off limits to a large amount of what you could do to him, but he's just ~obnoxious~.

“Oh, hey, that's not a boy....that's a GIRL....hey man, can we borrow the kid for a little while? We'll give her back, she'll only be a little bit used! Hey yeah.....wait, you're a chick too? Holy shit, no way....”

If you didn't have to put up with it for a half of an hour, you might tolerate it. As it is, Kiku's blood is starting to burn, and she's a lot less patient than you can be.

[X] Maybe he needs a trim for that ridiculous pompadour hairstyle.
[+] Humiliations galore!

A leather wearing gang of Japanese toughs isn't really a problem in most cases, even if they're pompadours. Usually they have the occasional dance-off, or hand around looking mean. And being Harajuku types themselves, they normally don't bother even young Harajuku types like Kiku-chan appears to be.

But when they turn nasty, they can turn VERY nasty, and being in reverse trap outfits seems to have given them the wrong idea. Or at least their leader. And like any pack animal, the pompadour is only dangerous as long as the leader is dangerous.

You gently pull Kiku to the side, getting her away from them – not for her safety at all – and look at the leader. “Do you have ANY idea who I am?” No, his eyes are dull and glazed, and he's not a girl, which means he isn't into the style aspect but into the culture aspect. And right now he's in gang leader cool. You carefully temper your emotions, and study him carefully. A couple of his flunkies might have weapons, but he doesn't – the chain around his waist doesn't really cunt, he's got it padlocked on, like an idiot.

Well, the reasonable approach isn't cutting it. And when he moves closer, his hair, which stick out about a foot and a half further than any other part of his body, nearly takes out one of your eyes. The sound is a soft ~shick~, a dull ~hiss~, and another soft ~shick~; you glare at him, the silver flash having caused most of his compatriots to blink and step back. “You could have put an eye out with that thing.”

His eloquent response is, “huh?”

“But don't worry, I fixed it.”

The way his eyes widen in horror as his perfect hair falls to the floor, a neat bald spot revealed as the massively sculpted and gelled hairdo falls to the ground with a sickening ~splatch~. You take another step forward, your left hand on the hilt, and your right barely touching the hilt.

And then you pull a really, really, really nasty trick.

You have total control over your own Water. You also can control it within other people, as Kiku-chan found out when she suffered her nosebleed. Humans, of course....The high pitched wail as his bladder lets go is deeply satisfying, and shame does what no amount of terror can. He flees, crying and wailing, and his gang with him, leaving the car empty save for you two.

The instant the door complete shuts, Kiku-chan is giggling like mad. And you lean back against one of the poles, sighing. “Sometimes I wonder what the kami were thinking....”

The rest of the trip passes without further incident – aside form your priestess breathlessly and somewhat ineffectually pointing out a peculiar yellow sign on the train as you make sure she is safely intact and not spoiled by the presence of unclean humans in her train car.

You're only about a mile from where the temple lies – some seven or eight miles from the property that belongs to Clan Ryo. A sobering thought, but not one you bother indulging in. You take a deep breath and let it out, calming and cleansing yourself as you and Kiku-chan walk silently up the road.

The torii before the steps is large and well maintained, the shimenawa ropes that extend along the trees to either side marking the boundaries of the shrine, the paper shide rustling softly in the breeze. The forest is darker than it has any right to be, even though it is evening, and you can sense movement out there.

You wish it was your imagination playing tricks on you but unfortunately you really don't have that foible.

“Stay close to me please, Kiku-chan,” you murmur softly. You've only been here a few times, and you are absolutely certain the place is much darker, more oppressive than it used to be.

“This is a much more powerful aura than it used to have, Ryukusa-aniki,” she murmurs softly.

“You were only here last week.”

“Yes.”

“....oh.”

You know of two entrances: this one, the public one; and the less used side entrance, which is a meandering path from Clan Ryo lands. You wouldn't need to venture near the Ryo lands, but you would have to venture through some of the unsealed forest. On the other hand, you're you, and you have Kiku with you.

[X] Front entrance.

“I think there is no help for it but to take the front entrance. Unless you know another way?” A hope dashed by Kiku-chan shaking her bright red hair back and forth. You sigh, and bow trice before the first torii, and then enter, moving cautiously up the shallow stone steps.

There are two more torii on the way up the hillside, and the stone steps are swept clean and dry. It's a long, quiet walk, and it only brings home the eerie silence of the forest on either side of you. Even the breezes, what there are of them, are subdued. Then you reach the flagstones of the temple itself.

The temple grounds are of slightly uneven and old flagstones, and despite the care that has been taken care some roots and pebbles and breakage has occurred. The main temple is ahead of you, while a smaller purification area is off to the left, and what is undoubtedly the storage place of the scrolls and libraries off tot he right. Behind the temple you can see the rumored fourth torii standing tall and dark, the supposed Gateway to Yomi. It actually connects to the forests of the mountainside, and those forests connect to the Aokigahara forest.

Which really does kind of make it a gateway to a hell of sorts, now that you think of it.
>>
>>33725964

The Feng Shui in this place is powerful, and it is clearly designed to cultivate the oppressive atmosphere and make the place more appealing to the less wholesome and more dangerous kami and youkai. Which is only appropriate since it is a shrine to them. The door to the main temple opens, and you can see the cowled figure of Hinata-hakase standing in the open doorway.

She slowly walks down the steps, holding the cowl open, the headdress with its polished horns helping the silken covering away from her face. Her face and build are somewhat androgynous, though that's mostly the outfit, and her garb is of red and white, though much more red than you like to see on a holy person. Combined with beads and matagama and a jade oni mask at her side – the latter reminding you of the one destroyed by Goto – she looks more fearsome than you remember her. The red lanterns and the ofuda hanging from the various buildings are ominous as well.

“So, it is Ryuu Ryukusa, still a lovely young dragonette. So, I expected you much sooner than this. Yet you have recovered from your injury far more quickly and with help other than mine. So, I wish to welcome you, and regret that the circumstances are this way.” Her smile seems both permanent and hints at a strange, hilariously dark view of the world. As you take a slow, deep, breath, you can smell her lack of corruption, though not truly purity.

[X] “Greetings. How are my sister and her secretary?”
[X] Get a better – an accurate – feel for the local Feng Shui before greeting her.
[X] “I bring greetings and a dear friend with me.”

You let your connection to the elements open wide, and fell the Water-Wind of this place. The red lanterns and the many shimenawa ropes help guide and control the local flow of chi through the area, adding to the oppressive sense of the place. The woods are thick, and the wind nearly non-existent as a result, adding to the stillness of the temple's presence. Even the positioning of the temple is designed to restrict the flow of chi, rather than encourage it.

Despite that, there is no truly stagnant chi or miasma of corrupted energies here. It almost seems to be designed to limit the chi flow away from the temple and into the forest. The other side of the main temple is similar – though there is definitely chi being allowed to flow in small amounts from the temple proper, which seems to be properly designed according to the rules of Feng Shui.

Water Eyes shows you a very clever, very ~old~ creature, a being of darkness and grace that has been redeemed, and now serves the kami. Yet there are still threads of darkness in her nature, not elemental darkness, or even fundamental darkness, but simply something so old it has fallen into that grey area just outside of evil than can only be described as apathetic. There is more, much much more, but it is hidden behind a veil of knowledge and skills that only the very old and very powerful could craft.

“Greetings to you, Hinata-hakase. I have brought a dear friend of mine to visit, since I understand she is a dear friend of yours as well.” Though, 'visit' isn't quite what it is all about, that will work.

“I see that you have taken away my prettiest shrine maiden, Ryukusa-san. So, I am sorry to lose her, but I suppose it was inevitable.” She does bow to Kiku, and Kiku bows back deeply.

“Please forgive me, Hinata-hakase. My duties have changed, and I must return to Koshinto now, futile as it may seem.” Kiku remains bowed until Hinata-hakase gently touches her shoulder.

“Uso, you will taken from the lists of our maidens. So, your duties will fall to others while you undertake a spiritual journey, one which is hoped will take you to those whom will accept you as their teacher and guide, yes?” Her yellow eyes – not like those of a cat, simply yellow – flick to you, and you recall Kiku's mention of how she used 'truth' and 'untrue' to couch her words and hide her meanings.

Of course, Kiku-chan might not have realized that would make her capable of crafting lies, not just hiding the truth. Still, she is helping protect Miko-Kiku from Oba-san's wrath for a while by claiming to have sent her on a pilgrimage. You do have to give her credit for that.

“May I ask of the health of my sister and her secretary, Hinata-hakase?” Oh, how polite and pleasant and patient you sound. All that work is finally paying off!

“So, they are well, though bound and sealed by other than I. So, they ave been cared for well, aside from that instance.” She gestures and tugs the veil up and over her head slightly. “Please come with me, Ryuu Ryukusa, Kumatori Kiku. So, I will take you to where the others wait.” You follow the mysterious, somewhat intimidating miko, in silence.

You bow before the entrance of the temple twice, and follow her into the main temple, where there are many tiny shrines and places to give offerings to a wide variety of small gods and spirits. While you do not give thanks or call attention to yourself, Kiku-chan does take a moment to stop at the main shrine, clapping twice and holding her hands together as she prays. You feel a momentary rush of giddiness; while you hide the effect her prayer has on you Hinata-hakase peers at you from under that veil with knowing eyes. When Kiku bows and releases the prayer, you feel that rush fade, but only slowly.

[X] Shrug mildly and smile.
[X] Place a finger over your lips, and bow slightly to her.

With a small shrug and a slight smile, you gesture for Hinata-hakase to lead on, which she does in silence....at least while you are in the main room of the temple. As Kiku-chan catches up to you, Hinata speaks softly, though more for the reverence of the temple than any need to keep secrets – your Water Eyes tell you this much, at least.

“So, it seems the shrine maiden has found her own way already. Uso, I will speak of it to her clan ruler and strike her from the roster twice over.” she pauses and turns to you, and smiles a very creepy, knowing sort of smile. You place a finger over your lips, and bow to her, and she does the same, bowing back. Your Water Eyes show that she intends to keep that as a promise, for respect for your potential.

Apparently, she's not willing to cross Oba-san OR you. Which is kind of a frightening thought.

You pass through the main temple, into the private rooms and secondary rooms, where people may worship in private or discuss things with the few shrine maidens that serve under Hinata-hakase. Of which you notice there are none in attendance. Probably for the best, especially if you can avoid Barrier Combat. If you can keep the full extent of your changes a secret, so much the better!

The back door opens into a secondary courtyard, this one with standing lanterns of stone, all lit, and more of the red paper lanterns, also lit. There are more shimenawa ropes, but these have actual ofuda rather than the simple shide papers. You can feel the calm almost reverberating through the entire courtyard. There are living quarters off to one side, and few storage sheds to another, and of course the stairs leading to the black torii and into the woods....but more important are the other three occupants of the courtyard.

Tied against two of the lantern posts are Jinyuu-onee-sama and her secretary Yumiko, a Void dragonette. Both are tied only very lightly, but they are held not only by ropes by by a pair of ofuda in a familiar script which has left them slumped in the ropes, helpless and perhaps unconscious. That script belongs to Hidesato-chan, who stands boldly between the two lanterns.

“Greetings, Ryuu Ryukusa.” She doesn't have any weapons drawn, but that doesn't mean much. “Kushinada is finishing her meditations and preparations. I am certain you have harsh words for me, but let us save those for after the duel, please.” Her voice is incredibly smug, and her expression is one of superiority.

[] Harsh words ain't even gonna cover what I'm gonna say to you, bitch.
[] Why are you involved in this – what's your gig, lady?

>>

No. We don't have magic so we need Barrier Combat for that.
>>
>>33727113

To what purpose? A clean decapitating strike with the Mukade-possessed blade, and it's all over. No lose ends, no complications, nothing. It's even called "poetic justice".
>>
>>33727113
No, it's specifically a function of Barrier Combat.

And the power of Horobi is definitely not something to tap for that - it's a little more permanent in nature than temporary bindings, as Anonimous can attest.

[X] Dead silence, Water Eyes are still on. Fuck her, she can wait her turn.

This isn't the first time you've seen Hidesato, but it is the first time you've seen her in person. And while your Water eyes were active the first time, that was just an image, as Er Yin said, a Ghost Play. This is the real thing.

You can see the essences of a peculiar code of honor – she used no more force than was absolutely necessary to convince Jinyuu-onee-sama to obey, and the power of the wards is such that it keeps them deeply asleep and otherwise unharmed, and it was only recently applied. Likewise, she is confident enough in her connection to the Art of the Void that she has not secured them too tightly, only enough to keep them upright and relatively safe.

Still, this person is a wickedly intelligent person, one who can see the means to the ends and the consequences of using those means. Hidesato's sense of duty is less bound than it would be in another day and age, and her power is still that of a true demigod. Classically trained doesn't even cover it – she's a polymath, and smart enough to be dangerous without the Grass-Cutting-Blade. And for some reason, she is finding this all terribly, terribly droll.

You turn your head to the side, and speak softly, something which seems to annoy Hidesato – you can see that she's trying to read your lips, so you deliberately avoid using them as much as possible. “Hinata-hakase....did you give your word that my sister and her secretary would be allowed free, so long as I arrived for this duel? Miko-Kiku-chan claims you may be trusted absolutely....”
>>

“So, my word is true and safe. Those whom I serve would not allow it to be any other way, Ryuu Ryukusa-san, but you must participate in the duel for the release to be secured, and participate until the end.”

“....Would a Barrier be a necessity then?”

She blinks, slightly confused, which is understandable – that is a lot of power to be given up, under ordinary circumstances. “No, Ryukusa-san. That is between you and Kushinada.”

[] Ask her the price of her word.
[] Ask her how likely it is that Hidesato will either challenge or participate afterwards....or during.
[] Step into the obvious dueling ring and await Kushinada in silence.
[] Ask her how Kushinada is doing.
[] Nod and tell Kiku that retrieving Jinyuu-onee-sama is the first responsibility, and the secretary is second.

[x] Nod and tell Kiku that retrieving Jinyuu-onee-sama is the first responsibility, and the secretary is second.

You consider for a moment, and then realize that there is no way Kushinada would give up the power of a barrier. The power of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi to command the air would not work without one.

Head still down, you ask another near voiceless question. “Do you believe that Hidesato will challenge me as well? Or do you think she might....intervene on her friend's behalf?” There was nothing more than a sort of basic loyalty there, no sign the pair of demigods were more intimate than that.

“So, I have permitted her to raise a Barrier on the behalf of Kushinada, but no other influence or effect would be allowed. As for a second challenge....that I do not know. So, I would not put such a desperate attempt to end your life past her. Her friendship is real.” Hinata-glances to the other doorway, off to the side. “Kushinada comes now.”

“Is she well?”

Hinata-hakase gives you a look, the kind of look that an adult gives a child for asking a foolish question. “So, there are wounds that cannot be healed, though Hidesato and I were able to cleanse them between us. So, the one who inflicted them intended death by inches, to be sure.”
>>
>>33728171
>there are wounds that cannot be healed, though Hidesato and I were able to cleanse them between us.
So they are unhealed, but cleansed in the sense that they didn't lead to corruption or unclean spirits? Does that mean she is most vulnerable to attack of the same type since she already carries those wounds?

Kiku-chan glances at you, and before you speak, she makes several slight, quick gestures – rescue and retrieve. You add in the warning that you will have to kill witnesses. You cannot afford anyone leaving knowing of the power you have gathered – though undoubtedly Hinata-hakase knows, and is going to keep her mouth shut. She nods and you make your way to the large courtyard. Hidesato smirks as you approach, and before she can speak, you turn your back on her, towards where Kushinada should emerge.

You know, if that had been Yui glaring like that, your clothing might have burst into flame.

Then Kushinada steps out....and the horror you have wrought becomes crystal clear.

Kushinada looks like she hasn't slept in days. She is still strong, powerful looking, but the darkness under her eyes, and the self inflicted wounds along her arms speak of unbearable pain and torment. Her teeth grind as she sees your outfit, nearly pristine, and truly samurai, as opposed to what she was, and still is – a broken half-measure of a creature, her mind scarred by fear and guilt, her soul ravaged by her murderous nature being revealed to her in a manner she can no longer justify or hide from.

She draws Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, and you respond by drawing your wakizashi. Kushinada sees it immediately and actually gasps, while Kushinada remains ignorant. Hidesato mutters a curse word under her breath, but says nothing more.

You smile, and take the most casual pose you possibly can, an almost careless pose that makes it seem as though you are leaving yourself wide open....

>You stumble, just a little, and you see her triumph, at your vanquishing...and then you cup the cheek of her armor, lightly, your eyes fixed upon hers.

>You pity her.

>Her ruby red eyes glance at you under the mask, horror dawning in her eyes as she realizes what she has done. She leaps backwards, drawing the sword from you, splitting organs and slicing flesh like it was merely paper. Only the faintest film of blood slides free with the blade, and you can feel your control slipping.

>But now it is your turn, and she is in pain, emotional, yes, but it is pain. A single bead of blood drips from the wound, a trickle, but it is the evidence of your power failing you.

Then later:

>Despite her weapon, despite her status, she is weak in the arts, and it is obvious. Without the power of the Grass-Cutting-Blade, she could never kill a spirit-child by herself. You step forward, fearless, uncaring, your bloodied fingertips stretched towards her.

>"This is what you have done, Child of the Kami.”

>For a moment, she seems to be confused, not understanding. You fall to your knees....you are spent. While your Shen is still strong, you have lost a not-insignificant amount of chi, and your power is required to keep you alive now; you can do no further harm.

>But you see what Susano-dono has not, and you smile at her.

>For her part, she shakes for a moment, then goes to one knee, her mind overwhelmed by Hell-alone-knows what. She screams in rage and towers over you, the blade rising high for a killing stroke. You smile beatifically up at her.

>"Too late, Child of the Kami.”

>She hesitates, her towering rage so mighty that she shakes even as she prepares to bring the Executioner's Blade down. Terrible form, really pitiable. You tilt your head toward the other half of the car, and she hesitates, her hate of you overwhelming. But you remain where you are, helpless to defend yourself. So she looks, a quick glance at where Kiki is no longer.

Depends. The attacks are tailored to the opponent, and even the most stable person has regrets and questions. Hidesato or Kiku would fare better, and it would be suicide against Hinata or Akari

That is a good question.

Ryukusa is fairly self aware and very stable, and she is entirely straightforward with her loved ones. But she is a container of very potent destructive power, which she has used and can use.....depends on the person attacking her, more than anything else.
>>
