I need pictures, pictures of Mars! Or creepy space things in general. See, I'm planning on running that classic Martian absolute horror scenario that an anon posted four years ago, but I need images to put on my 6-panel custom GM screen.

I'm thinking a great shot of the Face on Mars would be good, maybe some red landscapes, but that leaves three or four more panels that I don't know what to put up. Anything space-related is welcome.

For those new to the scenario I'm talking about, here:
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/12130366/
It's a long read but it's one of the best sessions I've ever heard about in my entire life.

so I don't have pictures but if you want to play sounds for your players I compiled some plasma waveform spectrometry data recorded by voyager 2 as it enterd jupeter's magnetic feild, literally the sounds of space propegating through the thin interplanetary plasma. heres the site I got it from if you want more. also in the folder is a number of other feild recordings if you want them some are pretty edgy though so be warned.

This stuff is great, thank you. The OP of the original thread linked all the sound files he played but two of them, including one of the most important, are no longer functional. I emailed the address he left in the thread but that was four years ago, so I'm not expecting a reply. I need something to replace those.

Are you sure you don't want Saturn? All your pics are Saturn. Mars is a tiny red speck of dust by comparison, without rings and only 2 crippled moons. You can do with one moon of Saturn what you can do with all of Mars.

No Cydonia on Saturn's moons though.
>>
>>33710896
I found the youtube link you were talking about, I don't think that was the original data. someone took the data, cleaned out the annoying noises and added some synthisyzer shit in there to make it more interesting. In the first link they have the raw voyager data split into ~30 second chunks, in the mega link I just saved those and compiled them into 10 longer tracks ~15 minutes each. but its the actual raw data and it sound really noisy.

I can think of a few reasons to do it on Mars rather than on Saturn's moons, yeah. First it's a lot more rooted in popular culture so my players will have more of a framework to imagine the adventure in. Second, it's much more realistic to suppose three manned space missions would have been sent to Mars within the next 50-100 years than to Saturn.

I'm mostly posting pics of Saturn because that's what I have, and much of the other stuff I have is too large to post.

This pic reminds me of something else I wanted input on. In the linked thread, the OP bought gas masks for his players to wear IRL any time their characters are wearing a space suit, obviously to simulate the effects and increase immersion. I want to do that too, but he neglected to say what kind of gas mask he bought. Should I go for a full-head model like the Russian GP-5? Something more like a firefighter's mask that has a full glass front but no hood? This is probably my second most important question, after the sound replacement.
>>
>>33712479
Full head models are probably going to cost you more, but I think they'll produce a better experience due to hearing difficulties produced by the helmet. Either would be fine, and definitely an interesting way to immerse players.
>>
>>33712715
I've found some sweet deals on GP-5s on eBay so I'm having my players measure their heads right now without telling them for what. I hope wearing the gas masks for like 5 hours straight will be tolerable.

Reassuring. I'm going to tell them not to worry about bringing food or snacks but to eat ahead of time (no food will be provided to increase realism, and snacking is a definite no-no), and instead of spending the money on that bring a $10 bill. That's what I'll exchange for their gas masks of course. Oh, and I'm going to make a big point of insisting they shave right before the game since apparently the GP-5 pulls hairs like a bitch

OP here, back from sleep/work. This stuff is awesome! I appreciate you guys coming forward, especially with new images and sounds and factoids. I've called around some army surplus stores in the area and I think I can get GP-5 gas masks (pic related) for $10 at at least one of them, which I think is a reasonable price to ask my players to pay. I see on Youtube that they can cause real sweat and discomfort after even short wear, so I hope my players can toughen up. The only problem is they don't have voice diaphragms so the players will have to shout, and I cannot for the life of me find anything on how much it muffles your hearing. There are no holes and it's fairly thick rubber so I'm guessing I will have to shout to be heard, and the players might have to lean in to hear anything at all from each other.

The original GM did not use a system, merely having the players roll a D6 to see if they detect things or succeed in actions. I was intending to increase that to a D10 but other than that keep the system the same. I have never run a rules-lite game before (nor a horror game for that matter), but adding lots of rules to the game seems like it would distract from the experience.
>>
>>33733654
But you still want a sheet?
Why not make it a personnel file?
Are the players NASA astronauts or Weyland-Yutani employees?
>>
>>33733733
I don't really know what I want TBH. I stumbled across this while researching horror techniques for a Call of Cthulhu campaign I wanted to run, so I was in the mood for handouts. I want at least one, and I thought a character sheet would fit. What do you mean by a personnel file?

As for the plot, I'm going to change it a bit from the original. Instead of 2158 it'll be closer to 2070, maybe earlier, since I would imagine we'd have sent at least two Mars missions by then. The PCs will all be American, OOC because I don't want my players trying to use accents or think like other cultures because that would disrupt the atmosphere, IC because there wasn't time after the second mission's disaster to gather non-NASA astronauts, since it was an emergency.
>>
>>33729335
Well, all the probes sent did provide us with a lot of information regarding the planet. So there's that. Mars is less hostile... but that's like saying living at the bottom of the ocean is more feasible than living at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Hm, I don't know which of these I prefer. Some kind of blend could probably be whipped up in shape. But I don't even know what to put in some of the blanks on the first one- like, what do I put under "mental assessment"?

Either way, what is your guys' opinions on premade or fresh? I'm kind of leaning towards filling out most of the info, like medals won, rank, age, marital status, while leaving things like name, signature, physical descriptors, etc, to the players.

Alternatively, I was also thinking of going fully-premade and having the characters that are not chosen become NPCs. I was thinking that when those NPCs die or have bad things happen to them it would increase the emotional impact, the players knowing that those NPCs could have been PCs if they had chosen differently. Thoughts?

I would go with pre-made. You know your players, right? Just make the characters fit the players. I'd suggest making them as close to the players as possible to help form immersion. Not exactly the same of course, but race/sex/etc.

I'm a fan of the thread you are working from. And remembering, there really wasn't any kind of need for skills. So just go with what makes sense.

I actually like the look of the first one you quoted the most. If you can replicate the entire 'i pulled this up off the web' look. If you can't think of something that would fit in a line, change the line. Use the NASA files from above for examples.

Like I said, I would mostly match the physical descriptions (although likely more physically fit) to the players. But really, they should mostly be forgettable. Everyone is going to be about the same height and weight - cause standard gear. And really, none of that stuff matters in game.

>>
>>33735369
>what do I put under "mental assessment"
Mental and physical assessment are the placeholders for attributes. Sure, you can't put 'anemic' on an astronaut sheet. But you could have the players define their body-stat and their personality. Intelligence will be in the occupational specialty.

Actually that's a good point, with the gas masks on you wouldn't be able to see each other's faces, making it easier to picture one another as the one on the sheet, especially after a long hot session when everyone's tired and hungry and (hopefully) scared

Still, attaching a picture removes the imagination aspect and also dictates some of the few choices they really have, like hair and eye color
>>
>>33736395

where are you finding appropriate images? For this campaign NASA seems the only source, but I guess you have all kinds of WW2 images to draw from, right?

>So how does the sound register on sensors?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_wave

It's not 'sound', its electromagnetic waves that have been transferred into a sound medium. Kinda like the static from an old TV when stations used to go off air
>>
>>33736502
makes me wonder, if space really was filled with aether or some other medium that *did* transmit soundwaves, would Earth just be hyperloud all the time? I mean, I've heard the Sun is extremely loud, plus all the planets and even Earth itself. Although I guess we can't exactly hear Earth and we live on it, so...
>>
>>33736501
There's actually very few useful pictures of actual submarine crews who perished in WW2. I don't want to use a picture of somebody whose children are still alive. And I need the correct uniforms that only submarine crews had. I guess I'll take some license eventually.

Here's how I describe my Uboat to the players. I guess a space ship isn't all that different from a game perspective.

NASA astronauts have Facebook pages. I'm sure a little research will turn up tons of pics with Nasa flight jackets. It could be useful to distinguish different specialists. The pilot could have an image in a g-suit, the scientist one in a lab coat...

The atmosphere is our cushion. It dampens EM and most nuclear radiation, it would also muffle sound.

>where are you finding appropriate images?
Try this: Look up NASA missions on Wikipedia, copa the names of the cre members, do a Google image search with each of those names. Set search tools>size to medium or large, full color, type to photo. Open one or two in a new tab and paste the next name.

Should energy or caffeinated drinks be supplied for players of a horror game? I know food and snacks are bad ideas but caffeine makes people more on edge, right?
>>
>>33737646
Depends. I cook setting food for my Laundry group. But that's more pulpy and I don't want them on edge all the time.

You don't want the players to fall asleep. When they're wearing those masks and sweating they'll need electrolytes after an hour or two. You could get jogger cups with straw and fill them with Gatorade. Vacuum sealed small peanuts packs without cardboard box could fit right in. Just make sure nobody stuff themselves with cheetos, chips, chocolate bars, and gummi bears, that kills any predisposition for adventure.

But there's no point in keeping your players hungry in a longer session. Order pizza or have astrofood ready. From the top of my head: spaghetti meatballs sealed in portion packets to be reheated in hot water, complete with plastic spork.
>>
>>33737868
Also: instant coffee.
>>
>>33737868
The idea of hunger is to induce stress on the players, same thing with the masks, the dark, the heat, and (possibly) the caffeine. It wouldn't be ravenous hunger since they'd have eaten just before the session but enough to make them agitated
>>
Get some cheap velcro strips and use them to strap down things like pens and handouts.
>>
>>33737947
...why?
>>
>>33737938
Just make sure they have the capacity to concentrate. If you make it too strenuous their attention will wander or they'll get grumpy. It's a very ambitious game you're planning. You will have to adjust to your group during play.

>>33737975
Because they're in a space ship. They don't remove the velcro after touchdown.
>>
>>33738018
I am worried about how ambitious this session is. My pedigree as a GM isn't long. Two simultaneous 6-month IRC campaigns of WHFRP 2e with 4 players each is my best, then I GM'd two sessions of Dark Heresy for two different groups a year apart from each other, and I have played in exactly three sessions of any RPG. My players have even less experience. For three of the four that one session of DH I ran most recently is their only experience with RPGs, while the third has that and a handful of Pathfinder games.

I've never done horror, I've never used props, I've never done atmosphere...
>>
>>33738258
*fourth, and I forgot that I played in about 8 sessions of a Black Crusade campaign earlier this year. Still, I have more experience GMing than actually playing, but even that's limited
>>
>>33712897
Gas masks are uncomfortable as fuck. I have a GP-5, and it's as uncomfortable as all hell. To be perfectly fair, it's a size too small. Still, wearing one for five hours straight without any training or a life or death need would be unbearable. Also, talking through one is downright impossible. These things were designed for civilian use, so keeping your ass alive was held way above comfort, hearing, or communication.
>>
>>33738740
Some of the videos on Youtube I watched described the GP-5 as painful to get on and off but fairly comfortable if sized correctly. Others disagreed wholeheartedly.

I don't know, if I can find a mask with a voice diaphragm that's no more than ~$15 then I could go with that. But the GP-5 is iconic, my friends might recognize it, and it's dirt cheap which is important since my friends and I are broke, and one is even quite poor.
>>
>>33738740
Now that I think about it this will be closer to 10 hours, not 5
>>
>>
In the soundtrack what do you think about incorporating two actual songs?

The first is Gyorgy Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna", the piece used in the scene that the original OP in the Mars thread linked where they find the monolith on the moon. The voices reaching a crescendo, while human, would be very unnerving and perfectly fit reaching somewhere deep inside the catacombs, or maybe while approaching a distant corpse that they can't see the face of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha6iydrIxSc

The other song is "This Is Not the End" by Fieldwork from the Edge of Tomorrow soundtrack. It's very atmospheric and would fit great, except it's also very popular right now and fresh in everyone's minds after the movie and its trailers being all over, so you'd have to use it early on. Maybe like the ship's AI as they're making landing checks suggests it in the background as a throwback piece to 70 years ago (or whatever)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32eywT-bQhQ

Once the session is over you could play it again. It's sort of reflective and melancholy while still bearing hope and defiance in the beginning, while the second part is kind of joyful mixed with sadness for what's happened, making it a nice full-circle
>>
>>33738258
>>33738294
You can start smaller, see how your group does horror. Play a few games of Dread and DRYH, get used to the genre, get your players used to the genre.

If your group isn't prepared for something like this then it could go very wrong. You cannot force something like this on players.

The implied contract is that everyone shows up and has fun together, directed by the GM. If they feel there's no fun to be had, or they become suspicious of your intentions, then they won't want to play your game.

Awake's round on Mars is a one-in-a-million game. I play a lot of horror with my years running group. But my players wouldn't be up for a game in gas masks. Maybe yours are.

But a round like this is a level that needs to be unlocked first. Don't set yourself up to fail. Be realistic about what you can do, and next time do a little better.

>spaghetti meatballs sealed in portion packets to be reheated in hot water, complete with plastic spork.
I like this a lot. The daily things on a space ship could be a great way to convey atmo.

I'd be autistic about tidiness with sealable small trash bags prepared. If a player leaves a tissue or torn paper lying around for too long roll for a system malfunction because it got caught in an air filter or shorted out a console. Have metal dice stuck to a magnet.

This >>33737947

Also make the players bring extra socks and make them take off their shoes, maybe suggest sweat pants.

Put occasional reassuring beeps in a long track and loop it on an old iPod with the headphones set to loud, then hide it in the corner.

When they go on EVAs the gas mask could be too much quickly. A paintball mask could work well, with a snorkel mouthpiece for Vader breathing. Add skiing gloves and get two of those voice changing toys to pass around and play radio calls. This will also cut down cross chatter at the table.

I have been working on incorporating an old timey radio into one of my horror games. I got a $5 car radio transmitter that sends out your sound signal on a low power FM antenna. Mindfucks to be had when audio handouts can be listened to on an actual radio or a phone with radio reception.

I don't have the time to prototype other horror games. All of my friends, including myself, are completely booked solid until September, then classes start again and other responsibilities take over and we're all booked again. Even in the days we don't have classes we all have personal responsibilities, work, etc, that mean gaming is difficult. Besides that, I'm really enthusiastic about this session and it would be unbearable to have to put it off even longer than I already am. Granted, the game will suffer for my and my group's lack of experience, but that's one reason I came here, so I can find ways to minimize this

>>33745084
The game won't take place on a spaceship except for maybe the first half-hour. After that there's maybe another half-hour in a small Mars colony, and then after that it's nothing but walking about. There would be no breathable air (except at the end IIRC one player took his helmet off and could breathe, I forget), so food is out completely. Drinks I could see since suits have those camel straw things. I'll looking into the runner cups though, that's clever.

I'm worried that introducing other props into the game beyond gas masks could make the game feel more pageant-like, silly instead of serious. I want them to feel the atmosphere, not like they're wearing a costume. But where's the line between those two?
>>
>>33751745
I neglected to find out if any of my players are claustrophobic. I suppose that will shortly become clear...

The microphone is a neat idea but I don't see a way to make it work. IRL everyone would have a radio so I suppose I could find one for each person, but I don't even know what to search for for that. "Personal microphone amplifier"? A shared one is right out, both because everyone would have one IRL and because you'd have to slip it under your gask mask to use it, getting it sweaty and gross for the next person.

>>33752409
Eh, I thought it was less horrifying and more stupid writing on the part of the creators.
>>
>>33756516
You know what else you can do?
have each player in separate small rooms with only a candle light and a radio if they get split up from the rest of the group

increases the feeling of isolation
>>
>>33757304
That sounds awesome, and super useful. In the original thread one guy does get separated fairly early on and it forms a pretty important plot point. The rest of the group split into teams after that and for a long section all the RPing was done through notes, and that just sounds like a nightmare. Again though, I need some kind of radio or walkie-talkie or something, and that's pretty different from the mic-under-the-gas-mask idea.

Related question, if I do do that and a player gets split off then obviously I would have to spend some time with the group and then get up and go spend time with the other guy. When I'm out of the room the game is essentially paused, right? So would it then make sense to allow the people in the paused room to take off their gas masks? Or would that break immersion?
>>

Not only do some people apparently still believe the Face is Martian-built but that the whole Cydonia region contains a city, a "Tholus" and multiple pyramids, including pic related that they've helpfully scrawled all over. It might be best to view this extremely atmospheric game as an experiment in its use with the group, and it explain it to them as such. That way if it bombs and atmosphere is still attempted in later games it can be explained that a lesson was learned and the atmosphere toned down in intensity.

You could always get throat mics for everyone; they pick up sound from vibrations in the throat, AND they tend to distort the voice.

Not that anon, but 3 is incredibly important from a mystical/folkloric point of view. It's regarded as a magic number in most western traditions and some eastern ones as well--the trifecta of past/present/future, heaven/earth/hell, the three wishes a genie grants, and so forth.

4 and 5 are just as important in a practical sense, but 3 has a lot more spiritual and literary significance, at least in western cultures.
>>
3 is a spiritual number and one that induces a natural flow

5 is a familiar number, 2 hands make a decimal number system.

7 is a hard limit. Have more than 7 of anything and you can start with the Venn diagrams because you need to structure it in order to manage it in your head.

50-150 is the final range. More than that and you'll be hopelessly lost without some structuring. Evolution brought us here, and it may take us further. But that's where it's at: 50 for chimps, 150 for homo sapiens. It's the maximum social group size we were made for. Beyond that there anonymity and stereotyping.

I bet for ancient Martians it was something like 1200...
>>
OP here. I did some digging and throat mics are at least $15, usually more, and that would double or triple the buy-in price. I went looking for alternatives on /g/ and someone had a great idea that I legitimately hadn't though of: handsfree headsets like pic related with their activation buttons pressed down, plugged into smartphones/tablets that are running a walkie talkie app, and for power reasons connected to wall chargers. It's so simple, means they only have to buy an extra $3 headset that I might even just pay for for them, and utilizes tech we all already have!

Dude, can you imagine. Can you imagine the moon cracking open one day and there's a damn gigantic skull at its center. And it's staring directly at Earth. And it's been there for billions of years.

We thought it was a mere novelty of astronomical bodies.
We were wrong.

If someone puts that in a game, do tell how your players reacted.
Also makes moonlight makeouts really fucking uncomfortable.
>>

I've found my next wizard mission. Terraform the moon into a giant skull.
>>
>>33785988
I was just thinking about that, I remember learning in astronomy years ago that one side of the moon is much denser than the other. We thought it was just because a different kind of rock formed on each side. We didn't know it was because one side housed the back of the skull

>We thought it was a mere novelty of astronomical bodies.

But it isn't novel. That's just what tidally locked objects do. It is the exact opposite of novel. It is entirely mundane.

The moon is gradually slowing down the earth's rotation. Eventually the Earth won't spin in relation to the moon.

So I read through the original thread (great read and I highly recommend it) and it occurs to me that the game ran from mid-afternoon until dawn the next day, and that it only came to an end when every PC was dead. Wouldn't it be better to have a specific end to the session, and maybe offer a way for the players to escape?
>>
>>33789894
How would it even be ended? It seemed to just go on forever. I guess once a certain threshold of horror or PC deaths occurs they could mysteriously find their way out?

Oh yeah, speaking of props.

Ozone. Run a large unshielded electric motor for a few minutes before game (disassemble a fan, get one from a junkyard, whatever) to generate that ozoney smell that puts people on edge.

Plastics. Find some cheap dollar store toys and unwrap them before game. Store them in an opaque bag and lets the weird chemical funk filter into the room.

Spices: weird ones like cloves, saffron, and red tumeric for catacombs, caves, or esoteric strange sites.

Blood: Serve a steak the night before, keep the juice. Soak paper in the juice. Use during game. Make sure to throw it out within a day or so, or it'll get really disgusting.

Remember, the whole point is subtlety and unsettling setting, so don't go overboard. If you're using gas masks, dose them during breaks or when a player's not looking.

New car smell vehicle deodorant

Light arcs make ozone, like a tazer or a spark gap and a neon lamp capacitor.

Patchouli oil.

Mars isn't aromatic. The methane is in the ppb and the rest of the atmosphere cannot be detected by smell. Near a vent the methane could be detectable though.

If everybody is okay with drinking... you don't have to DRINK the alcohol. If you close the windows, cover the crack under the door with a towel, take a bucket of boiling water, and pour a bottle of hard liquor into it, then everybody without a gas mask will be squinting and drunk in 20 minutes. And I'm not sure which filter will keep out ethanol.

OP here, got half of the gas masks! Went to a local army surplus store and the owner helped me pull out a crate of GP-5 gas masks that hadn't been opened since it was sealed in 1981. The crate only contained infant masks, size 0, size 2, and size 3, so I was only able to get two size 2s, but they came with the bag, filters, and the entire crate's worth of anti-glare stickers since the guy had just been throwing them out. So now I just need to find a size 1 (small) and size 4 (XL). Hopefully the other surplus store near my home has them for a decent deal, if not I'll have to go online.

Now I just need to catch up with this thread!

Something that bothers me about the original thread is that the players had access to a rock saw but only ever used it as a weapon. Why would they not try and cut into the walls of the tunnels, or some of the buildings/art that they find? Since that was never covered, what if players in other groups that attempt this try and cut into the walls? What would happen?

Upon slicing into the red rock of the walls a chunk falls off and reveals absolute darkness. Whatever ambient music is playing has its volume increased to near-maximum for as long as they're near the hole. No lights shone into it make any difference. A suction effect is sucking the air out of the corridor, pulling anything not strapped down on the astronauts towards the hole. If a tool or hand is stuck inside it is violently pulled in, and only great strength or teamwork will free it. If a head is inserted the player is jerked forward until his whole helmet is through the hole, held in the tunnel only by the width of his shoulders, and before the group can act he is bodily sucked into the hole through the ripped-open top of the suit. His naked body is dragged out of the suit and into the hole, leaving the suit intact but crumpled up, like a vacuum had been formed inside. The PC's screaming can be briefly heard but any look into the hole reveals nothings. Occasionally over the session his screams can be heard coming from walls or the floor, and eventually he is found in the fetal position, naked, and covered in bizarre but non-life threatening injuries and markings. He has no memory of his time beyond the walls.

Floors are supposed to be flat. Nobody builds a hallway with a 20 degree slope towards one wall. Nobody builds a circular room with a raised dome for a floor. On earth and on our space stations, we like nice flat floors, or floors that curve pleasingly where spun gravity is available.

But this shit. These narrow bands of raised stone, these ridges and whorls and wave-like crests from all directions... who carves rooms like this? What sort of thing found this comfortable to walk on?

Julian tore a hole in his suit using the rock saw. I saw him. I saw him patch it, and carry on, but the patch isn't good. I can see the thermal layers underneath. The others haven't noticed; it's dark down here, and the dust is everywhere. But Julian should be dead. His air gauges are reading nil. I saw the oxygen frost in the air. I saw the hole in his suit. He should be dead.

He needs to be dead.

Our EVA suits are well designed. Outer layers, radiation foil, heat radiators, fluid recyclers, the whole nine yards of earth science and fancy-pants engineering. Literally. These are fancy pants.

What they don't tell you about is the sweat, the smell, and the pain. Your suit smells like ass and oil, baby powder, plastic, wet cotton, rotting food, and stale water. Your fingers are jammed tight into six-layered gloves. They hurt all the goddamn time. Your fingernails fall off after a few days and if they grow back you pull them off with pliers. We all pulled ours our and scorched the roots before we left Earth orbit. They... didn't tell the folks back home about that one. Or about the catheters, the IV lines, the spinal braces, or the thousand other indignities astronauts go through just to function where man wasn't meant to function.

And now we're on Mars, and I swear to god I can feel something crawling inside my suit, between the coolant layer and the rad foil. It keeps... sliding. Hiding from me. I can't feel anything in these gloves. I can't bend my neck in this helmet. I haven't told the others, but I think they know, somehow, and they're keeping away from me.
