Previously on your adventure, you returned from the desert with the Wind Dagger as well as a few ingots of mithril and some helpful books that may prove invaluable to you in slaying the dragon Dordak Khan. You left Jirad to study the books, and also sneaked out at daybreak to find Pietra, Kor, and Maurice who had not yet returned from the north. Leaving Jirad and Annalise behind without warning, you ventured through the northern forest, crossed the white field known as No Man's Land, and made it to the northlands. Soon, you came upon a friendly merchant who gave you a ride in his veggie cart to Ferris, the city of stone and steel, where you contracted a man to forge you a shield that can defend against magic. Sadly, he perished during this, leaving you with three remaining ingots and a brand new mithril shield that is resistant to all forms of magic. Later, you met with the mayor, Viviana, who offered a trade: She would provide you with the resources to slay Dordak Khan and conquer the north, and in exchange you declare her undisputed queen of Ferris itself. She even offered her body to you, but you resisted. Seeing no other way, she attempted to trap you, but you overpowered her and tackled her to the ground.

Now as you lay on top of her, the office door is sliced open with magic flames, and Annalise stands in the doorway. She looks disgruntled.

You stand up, releasing Viviana. You raise your hands up to Annalise, and explain to her that you mean to arrest the half nude woman for attacking you. Viviana rises to her feet behind you, stepping back toward the window and brandishing her wand at both of you.

"What's going on? Is that the woman your spouse told me about?" Viviana seems nervous. It's clear she had no plan in case you somehow received reinforcements. When you turn back to Annalise though, you're not sure which of them is the greater danger. Annalise takes up her sword in both hands, blazing with golden-white flames.

"I guess this is why you left early. To feel up some old hag while I wasn't looking?"

You raise a finger to pause Annalise for a moment, then do a quick 180. You drive a mailed fist into Viviana's stomach, surprising her and taking the wind out of her so quick that she collapses. With that, you turn back and assure Annalise that nothing uncouth occurred. She seems to ease up, but there is still tension in the air. You tell her about Pietra's plan, which aggravates her even more, but at least now it's not directed at you.

"Alright, I believe you." She stows her sword and crosses the room. Looking away, she spreads her arms and waits for something.

When you turn back to Annalise, her warm smile is back. Still carrying Maurice, you head over to the corner behind the wooden desk and scoop up Viviana as well. Two full grown people prove a bit challenging to carry, but with a little help you get out the door and make it into the hallway.

Outside, you see several guards splayed on the ground, most of them burnt. You can assume Annalise is responsible. Together the two of you make it up the hall and down a flight of stairs before you reach the main entrance of the town Municipal Building. There are more guards here, as well as bureaucrats who will spot you easily if you try to make it out as you are. And of course, Annalise wouldn't be able to carry both of your charges on her own.

You tell Annalise to move ahead and case a ruckus, affording you some time to make it out. She nods and steps out from behind the wall hiding you and enters the lobby. You listen as a woman addresses her, asking if she found the office without any trouble. Annalise keeps her talking for a moment, but suddenly there is a gasp. A flash of light fills the room, blinding you just slightly, and causing an uproar. People shout and scream, and when you turn the corner you see the majority of the room is on the ground or feeling around with their eyes shut. Annalise calls for you, and the two of you run out of the municipal building together.

You rush down the steps and hit the street. People walking by notice you, but none of them seem too worried yet. If you act casual, they may not realize there is a problem.

You both walk toward the entrance to the town, the great road which runs to every one of the northern citadels. People turn to see what you're up to, carrying a half nude woman in fancy dress and a scraggly man in dirty robes, but nobody thinks to stop you. Even the handful of guards who pass you seem more concerned with watching out for pickpockets than kidnappers.

After nearly an hour, you reach the road east. Looking back at the city, you regret not being able to enlist the people to your cause. Still, you feel confident in yourself and your allies. As you make your way to the forest, Maurice stirs, and you let him down.

"Afternoon, sir, Miss Annalise. I trust our meeting with that abysmal woman went well." Maurice speaks through sleep and confusion.

You turn to show Maurice your captive, which seems to amuse him. The three of you head into the forest together, walking until you reach a relatively safe distance from the town. You and Annalise set to work building camp, leaving Maurice to watch over your guest. Maurice draws a bit of blue paint from his robes and draws a vertical line across her lips. According to him, it will prevent her from opening her mouth so long as it remains.

Soon you have a decent camp with two bedrolls, and a bit of stew on the fire. It's mostly dried meat and veggies, but it will serve. As Annalise cooks, you go over to see how Maurice is doing. "We gave to Dordak Khan what he wanted. Steel to outfit his army. Food to sate the hunger of his slaves. His emissaries come to pick up shipments, and pay nothing. If it continues for too long, my people will be poor and destitute. I won't let that happen." You scratch your chin. She doesn't seem to be bluffing, but it's hard to forget your first impression of a person. You ask why she wants to rule the north at all.

"I don't want to rule the north. I want to rule Ferris. I've clawed my way up from the slums, the daughter of a whore, and made it into the government with wits and looks. I'm not ashamed of how hard I've worked. And yet since I came to work for the people, every leader we've had was a corrupt, selfish, lecherous coward. They siphon tax money into their own pockets, birth bastards to poor women who only want better for their children, and laugh while doing all of it. I would be the most virtuous, kind, and fair ruler this city has seen since the age of the Iron King. If the price of that was offering myself to the future ruler of the north, it's more than fair."

And if we'd been informed of that prior to acquiring the hammer, that would matter. We'd likely have found a way to pay up, or negotiated an alternative.
But editing the pricetag after purchase is not acceptable business practice.
She couldn't accept an established loss, and screwed herself out of potentially profitable partnership in the process.
Yell back that if we cant return amicably, she'll never get the hammer back. Or any other form of profit from our passage.

"I've already explained sir. My school of magic isn't anything like that which is described in the book. To emulate it would require components I don't have, nor do I know where I might obtain them. That being said, if there are any formulas I can salvage, I'll need the book fully translated first." You nod, and tell Jirad to keep working at the book. He agrees. With that, you all set up a watch and turn in for the night.

The next morning, you continue heading east toward Pietra's presumed location. Jirad is quiet, reading softly from the magic book as you go. He says so little that you honestly begin to grow worried. Maurice does not share your fear, stating that this is merely a common state achieved by students of the arcane when they are ensconced in their work.

You allow Jirad to continue studying the book as you travel.

After a few weeks on foot, glad to have the road, you finally arrive at the Holy City of Anukk. You look in awe as you stare up at titanic walls of pure ice, and the white towers that peek over them. The road passes both around and through the town, and the path that leads in is blocked by a wall of sheer ice. There is a guard station at the base, filled with clerics in blue robes and wielding maces and hammers. They watch as you approach on the road.

"If Miss Pietra spoke true, she came here. She is likely still inside." Maurice dances in place, trying to protect his feet from the cold.

You tell them you plan to meet a friend inside, as well as browse the marketplace. The two clerics glance at one another, then bow. They tell you to follow them, and you do, reaching the ice walls in just a minute. The two clerics kneel in the snow and make grand motions with their arms as they bow their heads. Suddenly the wall begins to shake, and the ice cracks apart. It shifts and moves, making room for your group to enter. Once the wall is fully open, the clerics stand and motion for you to enter.

You proceed through the entrance, marveling at the thick walls of ice that now form a tunnel for you to pass through.Once you arrive at the other side, the wall slides closed again. You look around and take in the city. It resembles Lumen, in an odd sort of way. There is a large tower at the center of town, made of white stone. All the other buildings are normal rock and wood, and most of them have plumes of smoke from fireplaces.

If Pietra is talking to the leaders of this town, they'll be in the tower. However, there's no way to know that's where she is for certain.

You all four journey to the tower together. Along the way you pass by several people, all solemn and silent. This place seems very calm and serene for a major city. There aren't so much as good mornings exchanged amongst the populace, and all talking seems to be done in whispers. There also appears to be a great deal of bowing as well. You notice a great many clerics as well, dressed in furry robes of aqua and white, all carrying blunt weapons and round shields. They speak not at all, and merely patrol the streets in stoic silence.

When you arrive at the tower, you look up and realize that it is not white stone, but ice. It reaches high into the sky, easily twice as high as the Holy Palace in Lumen. There are no doors, only a great and beautifully sculpted archway guarded by four clerics. They stand shoulder to shoulder, at attention. For some reason, they're presence makes you nervous.

Bludgeoning through bureaucracy involves very little in the way of bludgeoning.

You and the others begin looking for a decent window, low enough to climb to. You spot one around the side of the tower, and begin climbing.

"If I may interject sir, I've neither the footwear nor the skill to ascend this obstacle." You turn back and see Maurice shrugging. As you are about to reach the window, you look back and see Maurice struggling to lift his weight up the side of the tower, while Jirad playfully dangles like a monkey. You chuckle and grab onto the sill, lifting yourself up and into the building.

Inside you see a large storage room full of shelves packed with various sized boxes. There is only the one window, and one door leading out. Across the room are two chests, up against the wall. The first one is open, likely empty, and the second is currently covered by a red-haired woman, with an olive skinned woman straddling her as she sits. You hold out a little longer and continue observing silently. Annalise continues to protest meekly, even as Pietra moves from her lips to her neck. As Annalise begins moaning lightly, Pietra lets her own coat slide off of her, revealing her usual leather vest. After a moment, Pietra pulls away and returns to occupying Annalise's mouth, and begins pulling her robes out of her belt. Soon Annalise's chainmail is revealed, but Pietra keeps going, lifting that as well. Beneath that of course, is Annalise's tunic, but as Pietra lifts that away, you begin to see her bare, well toned midriff. Pietra continues kissing Annalise, and now she ceases protesting. She accepts Pietra's hand as it slips under her tunic and makes it's way up and out of sight.

Maurice gives a loud groan as he heaves himself into the window, falling on his back. You turn around in surprise, and watch as he crawls away to catch his breath and allow Jirad to hop in behind him. When you turn back to the girls. Pietra has already pulled her coat back on, and Annalise hastily stuffs her robes back into her belt, red as a strawberry in spring.
