You leave the church as quietly as you entered, trying to keep the smug grin off your face. Unsuccessfully. With one short conversation you've gained yourself leverage with a corrupt priest, though you're not sure how far you want to try pushing him. He might well take up on the threat and simply confess his sins to the Inquisitor. If he's sincere enough, he could probably escape with a flogging. Anyone he admits to working with, though, would become fugitives and likely sentenced to death by torture if captured.
With that in mind, you're rather pleased your disguise worked so well.

The predawn light is quickly giving way to full dawn as the Sun crests the eastern horizon, only now blocked from you by the Adventurer's Guild building. The townsfolk should be waking soon, and you feel the need to get out of these clothes before someone recognizes you.
Back at the store, you quickly change back into your usual clothing, just in time for Euria to wander down the stairs.

"Oh, hey, morning Recette!" She grabs an apple from the fruit bowl in the kitchen and moves to leave the store. Charme is lounging on a chair in the back room, apparently ignoring Tear who is speaking to her in harsh tones.

>Open the store for the morning?
>See what's wrong with Tear?

Oh, and a reminder, Golem-girl is stopping by today to pick up the weapon. And I for one don't want to explain to her to just wait a bit whilst we go pick it up.

You let Euria pass, instead focusing on the noise from the back. You walk in on Tear loudly proclaiming something. "-ung up and left to rot like the petty thief you-"

"Hey Recette." Charme greets you nonchalantly, completely blanking the angry fairy yelling in her face.

"R-Recette?!" Tear twists about, flustered. Seeing you in the doorway, the look of utter panic on her face disappears to be replaced by a calm one.

You ask her, "what's wrong, Tear? Did something happen?"

She shakes her little head, "do not worry about it. Charme was simply intruding into matters that do not concern her. I apologize for losing my temper." She bows her head, hands clasped before her.

Charme leans over to speak around your financial adviser, "she's annoyed I found out about the test." The panicked look returns once more to Tear's face as she frantically tries to silence the lady thief. But she's too late.

A pause. Charme sits, grinning mischievously, while Tear slows her wing flaps, gently lowering to the tabletop to stand motionless. She stares at Charme, mortified.

"Eh?" Your head lolls to one side. "Test? What test?"

Charme upturns her palms, offering the floor to Tear. "You tell her, or I will."

She turns to face you. Her jaw starts working, moving up and down but her mouth refuses to form words. You can almost make out the cogs in her mind turning, trying to work over this scenario.
Taking a pause to take a deep breath, the fairy finally begins.

"Mr. Terme wanted to... gauge your abilities. To see how effective you might be as an asset. This store, and the freedom to act that it has given you, were to see how you might act when given certain pieces of knowledge, and the power to act on them. I was assigned to you to observe, and guide you if necessary. Needless to say, I should not be telling you this." Throughout this speech, she refuses to look you in the eye.
Charme, on the other hand, isn't looking anywhere else, carefully examining you.

>?
>>
>>33601948

>>

Would it be remiss of me to not start thinking of ways of torturing fairies? Because I truly think that we might need them.

Torturing Tear isn't going to accomplish much. She only knows a couple of things more than us: above all, she's a fairy servant.

Also, she's not very fun to torture. It was funny for Euria, but we didn't even do very much to her, nothing permanent or mindbreaking.

It seems as though I shall reserve my murderous desire until it has proven that Tear is fucking with us in a way that necessitates torture.

"Eeeh." You try to wrap your head around that statement. "Heeeeeeeh."

There's a long silence as you contemplate what this means, and how this affects what you thought you knew.

"Recette?" Tear probes you gently. You wonder if she's fearing your wrath. You guess this could be considered a betrayal of trust, if she's been manipulating you. But you don't really feel angry. Just curious.

"...This store is like, really expensive though," you think aloud. "That's a lot for just a test."

Tear corrects you quietly, "as far as Mr. Terme is considered, this store is nothing compared to what he hopes from you."

You blink. "You mean, he's not just trying to get his money back from me faster?"

Tear seems to quickly regain some confidence at a question she can answer positively. "The profit this store is bringing would be nothing compared to what you could do for our organisation. It is hoped that this taster of potential wealth will sway you into staying loyal."

"But... how? What does he want me doing?" Tear's confidence begins to slip once more.

"Ah. I am afraid I cannot disclose such information as of yet."

Charme butts in, "you mean you don't know." Tear doesn't answer her.

You nod slowly, forming a solid idea of what's going on.
"So," you prepare your final question. "How am I doing?"
You blast Tear with your most dazzling smile.

Taken aback, it takes your adviser a moment to collect her thoughts. When she answers, she does so very carefully. "Your profit margin is phenomenal. By no means did I expect you to fall into the role of a merchant so smoothly. However..." she hesitates, "your extra activities -that is, the tasks you would be like to engage in as an agent- have been few and far between. I am somewhat concerned at your... caution in breaking established laws."

>Ask something else?

You frown, "well I haven't really had any chances," you protest, "and we don't have either the customers or protection to try anything that might make enemies!"

Tear folds her arms over her tiny chest. "As one of Terme's merchants, you are under the same protection as any of Terme's assets. And requesting muscle is commonplace among merchants when a transaction might go sour. As for opportunities, I seem to recall the filthy thief here," she glares at Charme, "has herself previously offered her assistance in legally questionable endeavors, all of which you have refused. And when was the last time you checked up on the new girl's progress? I do not believe we hired her to be a cook and bed warmer."

You grumble, but let the business go for now. You have money to make today. With the conversation coming to an end, you tell Tear you're headed out again. She responds that she must bring her daily report to Terme and will be stepping out of the store as well. Charme mentions needing to see a man about a horse. Which you find odd. You didn't know Charme rides horses. She doesn't comment further, leaving you alone in the store.

Locking the door, you make to- GAAH!

As if from nowhere, Arma has appeared in the road behind you. She stands motionless, staring at the sign on your door. [CLOSED].
"Gosh, you scared me! Are you here for you weapon?"
The girl's head swivels in place to regard you. After a moment, she nods a greeting, before her gaze returns to the sign. "Well, I was just no my way to pick it up now!"
She makes no further movement.
...
You leave her where she stands and hurry down the hill to the blacksmith's.

Where do we do that?

Also, we've been working on getting our own muscle. More competent, more trustworthy, and more adorable. When we take things farther in fusion or adventuring, they'll be better equipped, too.

>when was the last time you checked up on the new girl's progress

The store is already open for the day and you make your way inside, greeting the lad at the counter. "G'morning again, Miss Recette! You be wantin' to see the Ol' Man again? Lemme go let 'im know you're 'ere!"

He takes off pretty quick, and soon enough Jacob the Smith appears from the workshop. In his hands is a golden blade. "Some good crystals you brought me," he states as a greeting. "A fine blade this. One of my better works, if I say so myself." He inverts the blade, handing it to you. You have no idea what to look for in a good sword, but... It's pretty. Very, very pretty. The blade seems to shimmer with a hidden fire in the morning light, as if it burned to be used in earnest.
There's an inscription in the hilt, though it's in a language you can't read. You ask Jacob. "What does it say?"

He only shrugs in response. "Fusion forging uses magic. The process takes a mind of its own. I have almost no idea what I made."
Still, you thank him for the work and pay the half million you owe for delivery. "Pleasure doing business," he tells you.

Heading quickly back up the hill, you find the morning crowds are finally starting to build. Though they're giving your store a wide berth. It seems Arma is still stood in the exact same spot, staring at your door.

You hurry up to the door, unlock it and flip the sign to [OPEN]. She wordlessly follows you inside the store.

"Hi! Sorry about the wait! I got your sword though." You show her the sword, and you could almost swear you see her eyes brighten and change color as you watch her take it from you.

Turning it about in her hands, her face remains passive. It makes you a little uncomfortable, though she does seem to be assessing it carefully.
Finally, she lifts the blade up, over her head, and smashes it down on her own golden fist.

[2/3]
>>
>>33602786
The most beautiful sound, like the ringing of the bells of an angel, fills the store. It resonates and holds, overcoming all other sounds and blanketing the store and outside street in its purity. All sense of time seems to disappear as you focus on the clear hum.

After what feels like a lifetime, the noise recedes and you can once more hear your thoughts returning. Arma is carefully examining the blade. There is not a mark on it. She nods in satisfaction at the result.

"I want it," she states simply.

Your brow creases in thought, "if I go any lower though, the store doesn't make profit which is kind of the point. If I don't make profit, I'd have to close and nobody else would be able to buy stuff like this!"

The girl remains impassive. "Hmmm... okay, how about this? I can let you have the scabbard from the other sword for free, and drop down to, say, two million two hundred thousand."

She stands motionless for many seconds. You can feel your heart beating in your throat. If she walks away now, you've just spent the last day and a million pix forging a sword you won't be able to sell to any idiot. No-one needs a sword as hardy as this! The folk around here are happy with an iron scrap that looks nice for decoration...

"Understood."

"Eh?" You're pulled from your self-inflicted panic spiral by her acceptance. She drops a bag of coins on your counter, then swiftly leaves with the sword.
You open it up and find all-gold coins summing up to 2.2 million Pix.

With the major sale you were hoping for out of the way for the day, you idly note that you've almost made enough already to pay off this month's interest. Anything else you make over the next three weeks, you could keep for yourself or use to start paying off the debt.

That in mind, you decide to close up the store for now and head to the town square and the market. Your stocks are looking a little low, and you could probably do with getting some new items in. You quickly lock up once more and begin the walk down the hill, noting with some foreboding the growing grey clouds on the horizon. It's been hot and sunny for a whole week now, unusually warm even for Summer. You just hope any storms that might kick up won't be too bad.

Reaching the marketplace soon enough, you consider what you could

That's for tonight, I think. Most underground dealings aren't made on the marketplace on the middle of the day.

To be honnest, I don't even know what most of our custommers wanted.

Customers want what you give them reason to believe you're selling.
>>
>>33603859
We had people lurking and buying stuff, but I don't remember what our usual sell was.
>>
Anyway, I vote that we replenish our stock tommorow with the things we couldn't buy today
>>
>>33603870
Varies a fair bit. But a huge part is probably still just what we display at the front. Arms, clothes, food, art. If you display it, the interested people will walk in.It seems reasonable to me to aim at changing that display regularly like in the vidya. That in itself would be an experience for the customer of done well. "I should go see what kind of things Recettear is selling today!" As long as it is at least clear what you're selling today.
>>

You head to the clothing district, and find the store you recognize easily enough. The one owned by Percival Roberts. As you enter the quiet store, the bell above the door tinkles to alert the owner to your arrival.

"Ah, my darling Recette Lemongrass! I feared you had elected to refrain from returning to my establishment. I am most pleased to see you once again." The young gentleman in his fine clothes steps up to you and bows low.
"Please let me know how I may be of service to your lovely self on this most dreary of days."

You recoil a little from him, gesturing for him to rise. You know it's supposed to make you feel important as a customer, but he comes off a little too overbearing for you.
"Oh nothing much," you inform the man. "I was thinking my store needed some more stock and thought I'd ask the only clothes merchant I knew."

He nods sagely in understanding, "yes, yes. Such a scenario would indeed seem logical. Very well, as you are a good friend of Charme's, and a fellow merchant, I shall offer a special deal. Choose ten outfits of any size and I shall offer them to you at a hearty discount."

You smile your thanks at him, "thanks Percival! That's really great!" You start to take a look around the selection of fashions he has on offer.

He lets you browse a few items before calling out once more, "is there anything else I might be able to assist you with, or was this your only business?"

"Actually..."

>Ask him to recommend you a new outfit?
We may need another outfit that looks good, but it also rugged enough for outings. The current default outfit Recette has is pretty nice, it'd be nice to have a spare just in case.

>Ask him to keep an ear out for interesting rumors?
>>
>>33604002
>Ask him to recommend you a new outfit?
The default outfit is modest and practical looking, not too imposing. Trustworthy. Great for connecting with and appealing to commoners.

And the one we got last time makes us look adventurous.

How about one that's more... fine? One that won't make the higher citizenry walk out on us for appearing too plebeian but without giving off an air that we think we're better than them? Is that something he can do?
>>
>>33604002
>>Ask him to keep an ear out for interesting rumors?
Information network is important for merchants.
>>
>>33604135
If you want to change the theme, you might want to start redecorating, first.
>>
>>33604135
The last one made us look whorish. Remember how everyone could see our underwear if we travelled at anything more than a leisurely walk?
>>
>>33604205
I don't, really. I don't want a store specifically for the high class, I just want Recette to have an appropriate outfit if she has to operate in such an environment for whatever (criminal, obviously) reasons.

>>33604229
Sure did. We don't have to buy anything we don't like though, and could certainly just say outright that we think it might be sending some signals other than what we intended. But yes there's a distinct chance this is just flat out the wrong store. I just want to ask him.

How about a fancy mantle? Lots of folds to look elegant and conceal items, with a hood or a hat if we need to hide our face.

That being said, this can wait.
>>
>>33604485
I'm partial for the black cloak. It practicaly screams " You know I'm suspicious, but you can't do anything about it". And this is a display of strenght.

But yeah, that can wait
>>
Please pardon the delay. Life keeps happening.
>>
>>33604603
We could discuss outfits and whether or not to renovate while waiting?

>>33604514
Black cloak is more nondescript: good for alley deals, but not so much for actual black markets. Besides, black is actually quite easy to see in a town with streetlights. Various shades of grey or bust.

I'd post pictures of some outfits, but they're anime style.

fine

Don't know how much of this Recette can pull off, though. Fur lined collar seems a bit much for someone her size.

> Besides, black is actually quite easy to see in a town with streetlights. Various shades of grey or bust.

Quite true. I was only saying that anyone in a black cloak is so obviously up to no good that they're either a) stupid or b) badass enough to get away with it.

>Black cloak is more nondescript: good for alley deals, but not so much for actual black markets

Also true. It depends if we want people to know us a criminal (with no factual evidences) or only as a vague shadow. In any it's quite dangerous making deals when the others can't see your face.
>>
>>33604776
Recette isn't really tiny. She's obviously still small, but keep in mind she's old enough to be treated as an adult for most purposes. There are actual little girl NPCs in the vidya, and Recette is a good deal larger than them.

pretty sure she's still flat as a board though
>>
>>33604826
Something classy, but discrete? For example, a good quality ensemble that doesn't make stand out of the crowd?.

I'd say functional clothes of a mix of earthly colors and shades of gray could work quite well.
>>
>>33604886
Well, a black cloak has its uses. Too sleepy to keep talking.

>>33604932
I know I suggested it, but I don't really know where I was going with it.

>>33604826
with that, just chaulk one vote for the fancy mantle. Good night.

"I was actually hoping to get a new outfit for myself while I was here," you mention to him. "Do you think you have something that might suit me?" He hums to himself, intently studying your figure, then begins sifting through his stock looking for a few particular items.

"I have a few choices in mind I believe would suit someone of your stature. It may be the case that such ensembles would not match what you are hoping to achieve... ah, here we are." He produces the first set of clothing for you.

[1/2]
>>
>>33605197
He holds out a thick, deep red velvet mantle, with short but flowing sleeves and an intricate flower pattern woven in red and gold silk along the seams.
To accompany it, he also hands you a dark red ankle-length dress.

"How- uh, how much are these?" you ask in wonder, having never seen clothes as fine as these in your life.

Percival tilts his head a little, "a hundred thousand for the pair, though I guarantee the craftsmanship is worth the steep price."

"Uhh, maybe we could try something else?"

He sighs, as if a little disappointed, before rummaging a little more. "In which case, perhaps this would be more suited to your particular tastes. For thirty-five thousand."

He offers you a deep purple dress, so dark it almost appears black. The material itself is smooth, but it's lined with unnecessary frills all across the body, with bright purple fabric looping around the hem, the half way along the skirt, around the waist and another two crisscrossing the chest. Not to mention the white frills at the neck and cuffs. The throat is closed off with a single red silk rose.

You frown. "This... seems a little pretentious," you comment, "but not in a good way."

He shrugs, then pulls a ready-assembled outfit from a hangar near the front of the store in the "popular" section.
You don't even need to ask about this one, it's the infamous 'Sailor Suit' that's apparently the height of youth fashion with the girls of a country to the east somewhere. You've seen a few girls wandering Pensee with them on...

It's expensive, but it seems appropriate for a super-formal setting where Recette's work attire might not be allowed. Or if we have to meet with foreign nobility for some reason.

>>You look between the three outfits. You hate to say it, but... that mantle is beautiful. "Fine, I'll pay the price," you grumble a little, taking the mantle and dress from him again.
He beams a glorious and satisfied smile at you before running up the cost of all the items.

"Very well. I shall package these up for you to transport with you safely, and I shall have the stock you have selected delivered to your store promptly. It has once more been my utter pleasure to serve you, my darling."

You take the small holding bag he offers you, now filled with your new silks. "Thanks, Percival! You're the best!"

He returns your smile sincerely. "You are most welcome."

And I'm afraid that's all for this week, folks!
Hopefully I'll be able to scrounge up an image representing our pretty new clothes in time for whenever we need to wear them!

The rest of the thread, as always, is now open to discussion and Q&A, I shall be lingering for most of the evening on and off.

Other than that, thank you all for reading and putting up with my terrible pace! I hope you're enjoying this as much as I am, and I hope to see you all next week!

Hey, guys, if this buy proves to be too much for us, we can still sell it to Alouette.
