Empty.

My arms are empty. But she was right-

"Huh?"

I open my eyes and look to my side, and Charlotte's nowhere to be found. Did she get up before I did? But it's still dark out...

Reaching over to the nightstand, I grab my glasses and put them on. My Branch might let me see in the dark, but my actual vision's still pretty crap. Not that I'm complaining, of course. I mean, I look weird without them and everyone I know says that I shouldn't bother with contacts since I'm cuter this way.

I wonder what Charlotte would think?

Er...

Shaking that stupid concern from my mind, I look over at the alarm clock... it's two in the morning. Yeah, that's definitely too early for her to have gotten up, but maybe she went to the bathroom or something?

Dammit, this is gonna keep bugging me until I find out where she went. and so, I hop out of the bed and peek out of the cracked door...

...oh, she's on the phone. Okay.

I still consider Charlotte a person of interest in regards to the Andy tongue cutting.

The lets mention that I don't have human control seems too easy for her, and she could easily be lying to us. That cute girls were around Andy's work place. Gunther buys up businesses in branch related areas, she is the only one we know of who's powers seem close or related to making someone slice off their tongue. She is most likely to hear what we said to Mina right before the slicing and she has the most to gain from it.

Going to vote for eavesdropping.

I mean, she even went so far as to give me the key to her place so I can come and go as I please so I'm pretty sure I can trust her... but there's still a lot about this whole thing that I don't know.

Quietly, I move to the side of the door so I won't be spotted and lean against the call.

"...no," Charlotte says, "there's no need to apologize. You know that I'm a light sleeper to begin with."

That's not too surprising, I guess.

"I was worried about leaving her at home by herself after what happened so I invited her over here to spend the night," she sighs. "...yes, but her sister wasn't going to be coming home. I don't think it'll be a problem, I've walked her home in the past."

She's talking about me?

"No, not that I've noticed. And she was sleeping peacefully when you called... I don't think it's even possible to sleep with such a cute expression and have a nightmare," Charlotte laughs. "N- no, nobody's -that- cute, though she is a pretty good model for my dresses."

"M- Mr. Gauthier!" Charlotte shouts. "Don't make jokes like that, you sound just like Rhaccy!"

So she's talking to her boss? But why was it so important to call at this hour just to go on about how cute I am?

"Ugh... would you mind getting to the point of this phonecall?" she asks. "-I- might be fine with you calling at this hour, but I don't want Cecile waking up and freaking out because I'm not there."

Too late for that.

"PLEASE stop with those jokes, it's not like that!" Charlotte shouts. "It's not funny!"

Then she stays quiet for a few minutes, I guess he's telling her about something. All I can hear from this side are sounds of acknowledgement.

"Ugh... so it's them?" Charlotte asks, her tone a lot more seriously than before. "Are you sure? Mmhmm, I know, but... damn it, this is only going to make things more difficult. It won't work on me, but I will need to tell her and her friends to be careful about what they say."

Hopefully we're smart enough to quietly back away from the door before she finishes the phone call so we can look like we just got out of bed.

"Once I get the address of where he worked, I'll get right on staking out the area," Charlotte says. "Yes, once I get his information. I don't even know his full name, but I'll call you once Cecile's friend tells me."

Oh, I guess they're talking about how he's paying for Andy's hospital bills.

"Myself and Cecile, the two from the Tree of Life, the man that Cecile ran into the other day... have you been able to find out anything about him? She thinks that he might be mafia and that would definitely fit with what you told me, but... oh," she sighs. "I see. Well I'm -fairly- certain that they don't have the book, but I will be careful. Thank you. Mr. Gauthier."

With a long sigh, Charlotte hangs up her phone and stretches out her arms. She still hasn't spotted me, I don't think.

Crap.

She'll probably hear me if I run back to the bed now... but maybe she won't realize that I was just eavesdropping if I play dumb.

Yeah, that's it.

After positioning myself so that it looks like I'm coming straight from the bed, I swing open the door and walk out into the hallways while rubbing my eyes.

"Charlotte...?" I call out.
"Wha-" Charlotte staggers back to keep from running into me. "Cecile!?"
"Whass goin' on, you were gone when I woke up..."

Rubbing my eyes, I roll over in the bed and see that Charlotte's gone just like before... but it's actually morning so she's probably up doing whatever it is that she does when she wakes up. Probably feeding Milla an entire turkey for breakfast or something.

I throw off the covers and snatch my glasses off the nightstand, then hop to my feet and head out the door. As I enter the main area of this hotel suite thing, I look around and don't see Charlotte anywhere... but I do hear the sound of running water coming from the bathroom. I guess she's taking a bath?

"G... good morning, Loki..." I choke out while staying as still as possible so I don't end up getting pecked or pooped on or my hair pulled out or any of the things that crows can do to innocent girls like me.

Goof off with light powers, try to use our light powers to see fine without glasses.

All glasses do is refract light, we can bend light directly. It just takes precision. It'd be a good trick to have in case we lose our glasses, and it gets us started on being able to see things miles away.

>>33594554

I doubt it's a case of all sides being equal, as much as a trade off depending on what side you choose.

My guess on how it works is:
The police group: By far the strongest of the three choices, but with the most internal strife and politicking.

Mr. Gauthier's group: Not nearly as strong as the police group, but unified and generally good willed.

Our own group: We still have the option of forming our own group with our friends, but we lose out on any of the support we would have. On the plus side, it would be completely us calling the shots, and we could do anything we wanted for as far as our power could take us.

Each choice gives us different perks and drawbacks, so they're all viable, but they are definitely not all the same.

"Hm?"

Looks like I have a few unread messages... best to start with the old ones first. And it looks like this one's from Mina.

"Not going to school today, visiting Andy at the hospital with Marcus and my parents," it reads, and then she included the information on what hospital it is and the room number. I guess I should head there after school.

And now for the next one...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH I OVERLEPT! And it's like a forty-five minute walk to school from here, not to mention that all I have are my gym clothes since I refuse to wear one of Charlotte's dresses to school and I was gonna stop by home first to see if Allison came back and dammit dammit DAMMIT!

What, was it because I didn't get much sleep two nights ago? Or was it because I woke up last night so my sleep schedule got all messed up?

...or maybe it's because Charlotte-

Screw it, I'm just gonna skip. It's not like I really felt like going to school today anyways.

"i just overslept but minas dealin with som stuff now cal me when u get the chance nd il tel u the details," I text her back. And then I collapse on the couch.

Andy's in the hospital and Theresa's worried about me and Allison's sure to give me an earful when I get home too... ugh. This sucks.

...and as I stew in anguish at the crappy turn this day's already gone, the door swings open and out comes Charlotte.

"Cecile?" Charlotte turns to me and adjusts her towel. "I was just going to grab my clothes since I left them in the bedroom, I didn't know you were already awake."
"Yeah, though I overslept," I sigh.
"Eh?"

And then she glances at a wall clock and suddenly looks REALLY guilty.

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention to the time at all," Charlotte sighs. "And you're going to be late for school now, too..."
"No," I shake my head. "I'll just skip, there's no point in going there at this time of day."
"Are you sure? Because I could always call a taxi for you and-"

"That's fine," I nod.
"Great!" she says, smiling. "I'll do that right now..."
"Um, maybe you should get dressed first?" I say.

I don't think I'd be able to take her going around like that much longer, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to answer the door in a towel.

"Oh... that's right," Charlotte says with an embarrassed laugh. "I'd better put some clothes on before I do anything else!"

With that, Charlotte runs into the bedroom and comes back a few minutes later, fully dressed.

"Alright, time to order food!" Charlotte says.

"After you call, could we maybe talk about whatever you boss said to you in that phone call last night?" I ask.
"Oh, of course!" Charlotte nods. "...actually, if you took a bath now, the food should be done by the time you get out. That way, we can discuss it over breakfast?"
"Sure," I reply. "Sounds good."

With that, we both go about our respective tasks.

As I walk into the bathroom, I take a look at the tub... while I -could- take another long wonderful relaxing bath, that'd end up eating up a lot of time and I'm already at a deficit for that thanks to my oversleeping. Besides, Charlotte gave me the key to her place! That means that I can come in here and take advantage of the facilities whenever I want!

Charlotte said that she'd be willing to talk about that phonecall from last night while we ate, so I'm gonna ask her about that very thing.

But first, there's some other stuff that I wanted to know.

"Charlotte?" I call out.
"Hm?" Charlotte replies, idly spinning her fork around her fingers. "What is it, you don't like the food? I can always order something else if you want."
"No," I shake my head. "I wanted to ask you aboout your boss."
"Mr. Gauthier?"
"Yeah," I nod. "What's he like? As a boss, I mean. You've been working for him for a while, right?"

"He was nice enough to take me in, and I've been working for him ever since," Charlotte says. "Since my Branch is suited for such things, he put me on as his daughter's bodyguard, and I was tutored along with her while I acted as such. If not, I'd still be going around with a fourth-grade education," she says with a bitter smile.
"So he's really nice, huh," I say.
"Yes," she nods. "He can be rather... cutthroat when it comes to some of his business dealings, but as far as face-to-face situations go, he's always been very amiable."
"...cutthroat?"

I can't help but feel a little bit alarmed by that word.

"Nothing horrible, I mean," Charlotte says, holding her hands up in the air for emphasis. "It's just that he's made a few enemies in the business world and has to respond in kind when they move against him."
"Hm."
"Aside from that, umm..." Charlotte twirls her fork some more, "...no matter how busy he is, he always makes time for his daughter," she says, smiling. "That's the main reason why I'm closer to him than most of his other employees, I guess. Not to mention that he felt that he could trust me more than others thanks to the fact that my Branch is a Control-type..."

I would also guess that and don't think it's super-urgent, but it's nice to have confirmation.

If that is true, it's non-sensitive enough that we could tell Irene if we ever talk to her again.

"Why does that matter?" I ask. "That your Branch is a Control-type, I mean."
"Oh yeah, you should probably know this..." Charlotte says as she eats a forkful of waffle. "Of the five main classifications of Branches, Control-types are kind of special."
"Special?"
"Well it's not anything really major," she shrugs, "but active-type Control Branches don't work on other people of the same type. Basically, that means that there's no danger of me falling victim to something like your friend did yesterday."
"Wait, really?" I say, staring at her.
"Yup," she nods.

...huh. That's pretty interesting.

>[1/?]
>>
>>33598951
That sounds lame and arbitrary.

Does CC get anything for having an Elemental type?
>>
>>33598951
Although it does mean that you could have been the one behind it and are lying about it.
>>
Wait, didn't somebody mention that the books were called Books of the Gardener? Does that mean that a secondary power of a Gardener might be to 'infuse' their ability into a book? Does that mean that its still Gardeners behind the books?
>>
>>33599020
If you're really that anal about it, we could always tell Irene her branch name and find out for sure.
>>
>>33599012
I can see it, actually. They're wired to control others, which makes it harder for others to control them.
>>
>>33599012
You mean aside from lasers, illusions, opticamo, being grossly incandescent, and the ability to tan without burning by controlling the amount of light that hits us?

I mean yeah Char can't be mind controlled, but our branch can vaporize someone's head at the speed of thought if we really feel like it.
>>
>>33598951

But wait- I'm pretty sure what Theresa's Branch would fall under that category, so does that mean that Charlotte would be able to see her even when her invisibility's up?

"So..." I say, trying to figure out a way to ask this question without giving Theresa away, "if someone had a Branch ability to make everyone around them see like a mental illusion or something, it wouldn't work on you?"
"Well," Charlotte replies, "it'd depend on how that ability worked. If it was like a general 'everyone around here sees such-and-such' thing then I'd be affected too. But it wouldn't work if it es directly targeted at me."
"Oh," I nod. "I think I get it."

Theresa's invisibility doesn't have a single target so it should work on Charlotte... okay.

"So what's your boss's Branch supposed to be?" I ask. "is he a Control-type like you?"

Suddenly, Charlotte starts coughing really really hard. I guess she wasn't expecting me to ask that.

>[2/?]

"I- I never said that Mr. Gauthier had a Branch," Charlotte stammers while hitting her upper chest in hopes of dislodging whatever it was that went down the wrong pipe.
"Well you said that you had your first Synapse with him when you were talking about it yesterday," I say. "So I put two and two together, and..."
"damn it why was I so careless," Charlotte mutters under her breath while covering her face with her hand.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to be nosy-"
"No, it was my fault to begin with," she sighs. "Yes he has a Branch, but I can't tell you what it is. Remember what I told you the second day we met?"
"Oh yeah."

Keeping your power a secret and all that. Yeah.

"If there was anything aside from that that you wanted to ask about, I'd be willing to..." Charlotte says, laughing nervously.

"So you like girls, then?" I ask.

And immediately feel like throwing myself off the balcony because I am clearly a total retard who shouldn't say anything ever again.

"Please, Cecile..." Charlotte sighs, her face noticeable redder than before, "...I've had enough of those jokes for a lifetime."

But then I remember about that phonecall from last night, and that's actually an important thing that I should know about probably. And there's no chance of making myself look dumb by asking her about it.

"Um... what'd he tell you last night?" I ask.
"Hm?" Charlotte looks up at me with her fork sticking out of her mouth. "Oh, the phonecall," she sighs. "I thought you were going to ask another- never mind," she shakes her head.

I really hope she isn't mad at me.

"I sent him the information you gave me about the circumstances behind your friend getting hurt, and he got back to me last night,' Charlotte says.
"So he knows what Branch it was?" I ask.
"No," she shakes her head, "but he told me about a number of cases involving organized crime where potential witnesses committed brutal suicides while in police custody. People would go into police stations claiming that they wanted to give information and end up driving their thumbs through their eyesockets in front of the investigators instead, that kind of thing. He mentioned that there were some particularly gory ways that it as done, but thankfully he kept those to himself," she sighs.

I'm trying not to freak out here but clearly it's not working.

"Calm down, Cecile," Charlotte says as she gets up from her chair and walks around to where I'm sitting. "If they target you, I'll take care of it."
"But what if-" I stammer. "I mean, they already got Andy and-"
"I don't think that had anything to do with you," she says, resting a hand on my shoulder. "From what you told me, your friend probably mentioned something that whatever ranch holder this is didn't want known, and then his power activated. That's it."
"Okay, I guess..." I mumble.

Once I calm down, Charlotte goes back to her place at the table and we finish eating our breakfast. I'm still a little it freaked out, but I think I'll be able to handle this... maybe.

"So what do you want to do now?" Charlotte asks as she collects the dishes. "Since you're skipping school, would you like me to walk you home instead?"

"Oh," she sighs. "For a second there I thought you meant physical training..."

The thought of the two of us jogging in the park with these frilly dresses on is way too weird to consider.

Once I'm done dumping all this on her, the phone goes silent for a good while. Did she hang up on me?

While I -would- like to figure out how to use lasers wirhout blacking out, it's probably more important at this point to learn something more practically useful.

"Defensive, I guess?" I say. "Whatever you think would be useful, I mean."
"Alright," Charlotte nods. "Well, there's throwing up illusions, though that's a bit advanced, I think... oh!" she snaps her fingers.

Looks like she has an idea.

"You know how birds of prey like eagles catch fish?" Charlotte asks with an excited glint in her eyes.
"How they... what?" I reply.
"You know, like whoosh!" she says, swooping her hand down in an arc. "They snatch it right out of the water!"
"Okay?"

Wouldn't that be easy to notice if they're staring straight at you when the plane goes up?

Can we see around corners with this?
>>
>>33600883

"Well most animals have trouble doing it at first, since the water that the fish are swimming in bends the light so it's slightly off," Charlotte explains. "Simply reaching at them won't work, they're not where they appear to be from the air."
"I'm not really sure what you're getting at," I reply.
"Well it should be simple in practice," Charlotte says, nodding to herself. "Take an area... a set plane if you will, and treat it like the water's surface. All the light that's passing through it an bend it at a set angle so what seems to be in front of you is actually off to the side. That could make for a pretty good way to throw off a potential attacker, right?"

Ohhh, I think I get it!

>[2/?]
>>
>>33600961
We pulling Slaaneshi defensive shit.
>>
>>33600982
>Wouldn't that be easy to notice if they're staring straight at you when the plane goes up?
It would be noticeable if they see you change, but that wouldn't really help them. All they will see is you jump from a location to other. And even if they figure out the trick, it will be hard to adjust to it. Also if CC changes the angle while also moving in the plane herself, they will never be able to determine the angle.

>Can we see around corners with this?
We could.
>>
>>33601005

"So like..." I scratch my head, "I bend the light to make myself to -appear- to be somewhere else. But I haven't actually moved."
"That's exactly it!" Charlotte says cheerfully. "And it's pretty basic so I think this should be easier to do than something crazy like full optical camouflage."
"I'd assume so."

I get the gist of what Charlotte's saying, so now it's time to put it into practice!

Backing towards the window in the living room, I have Charlotte stand at the opposite end of the room with a pillow she picked up from off the couch. If I get this right, then she shouldn't be able to hit me... I think.

And if I screw up, it's a pillow fight with a cute girl.

>>
>>33601073

Alright, concentrate.

The area a few feet away from me, catch it and bend it so that it's... there, I think I've got it.

Slowly, the entire room in front of me seems to bed to the left, like I'm looking at it through a mirror that's being turned at an angle. Charlotte too, I know she hasn't moved but she doesn't -appear- to be right in front of me anymore, it's more like she's standing off to the side.

"Wow, you actually did it," Charlotte giggles. "I'm glad that my idea actually worked."
"You're the one who knows more about this stuff than I do," I reply. "Now let's see if I actually bent the light enough for this to have been worth it."
"you sure?"
"Yup," I nod.

And then she chucks the pillow as hard as she can.

WHOOSH

It zooms right past my head and hits the window with a loud thud. Thankfully, the windows up here are made of that plexiglass stuff instead of real glass... if not, I'm sure that it would have went right through.

"Not so hard," I say as I walk over to the pillow and chuck it right back at Charlotte. With a surprised squeal, she ducks before it can hit her... and Milla leaps through the air and catches it in her mouth.
"C... Cecile!" Charlotte shouts. "Why'd you-"

Then she glances at Milla, and then back at me.

"...wait, the field's still up?" Charlotte asks. "You're still bending the light?"
"Yeah," I nod. "It doesn't take more concentration to keep it up, I guess."
"But you threw the pillow -right- at me."
"I did?"

"The refraction isn't throwing you off at all?" Charlotte asks.
"Umm, I guess not?" I shrug. "I mean, you look like you're right there," I say, pointing at Charlotte's image, "but I can just... tell that you're actually right here?" I point to the left. "I dunno how to explain it."
"Hm, that's interesting," Charlotte says, crossing her arms.

Under the guise of "practice," Charlotte has me throw up refraction fields of different angles while she tries her best to actually hit me with a pillow. But while her efforts are definitely adorable, she misses every single time.

I hit her a bunch of times on the rebound, though.

We keep at this for a long while... but while it's definitely fun, I'm starting to get bit of a headache from overuse of my Branch so Charlotte takes that as a sign to call it quits.

It's worth it, though... both for the new trick I learned and the opportunity to see Charlotte breathing heavily.

I am not a pervert. Nope, not at all.

>>
>>33601392
I'd argue that would actually be a good thing.

Cecile will have to do some fast talking one way or another, and at this point Mina and Theresa are just vacillating over a foregone conclusion and tempting disaster. Them "accidentally" running into one another would really just save us a lot of time in the long run.

>>33601448

If we do that we need to talk to Theresa about it first and we need to actually tell Charlotte instead of just allowing her to find out.
I'm not against telling her but just going "oh by the way my friend has powers too and we had the books all along whoops sorry" isn't the best plan of action. At the very least not right in front of mina after all this shit she just went through.

Of course it's not the "best" plan, but considering both Mina and Theresa seem content to just shuffle their feet forever it might be necessary.

We don't even need CC to do it intentionally, just have her dun goof and fail to prevent them from meeting, then everything will fall into place out of necessity.

I don't see how the players consistently choosing to spend time with one waifu could be considered a routelock, anon.
>>
>>33601788
Or it could be the Charlotte-related choices being consistently voted for every time they come up almost without fail. Because, ya know, if people are consistently voting for something that thing tends to happen consistently.

But nah, you're probably right, that would make far too much sense. Clearly railroading.

If things had gone differently we could be out smiting heretics and crushing canines RIGHT NOW... but you don't see me being all salty about that, a frilly dress is fine too.
>>
>>33601803
Look at the options considering girls, it was clearly a railroad.

Mina: Yeah I think we know that one.
Irene: Guilt by association got her rail roaded out.
Theresa: Sort of viable if she got half the screen time Charlotte did.
Charlotte: All the choices could be custom built to have us arrive at this destination and not one thing would change.

>>33601825
>The players.
A carrot was dangled over the Charlotte route most of the time and she gets more screen time then rest of the girls.
>>
>>33601839
You are too goddamn stupidç
>>
>>33601825
Well realistically that's how they happen, unless you're under the delusion that, after planting ourselves firmly on the off-ramp to Char town, we do a sweet Need For Speed jump off of a conveniently placed ramp that can somehow support the weight of our giant muscle car and propel ourselves onto a different off-ramp at the last possible second, which is very nearly the point we're at.

I mean it still might be POSSIBLE at this point, but we'd be breaking a few traffic laws and probably give the granny in the next lane over a heart attack.
>>
>>33601829
People are voting for it because the choices have been weighted to give Charlotte the most screen time and then it snowballs because people vote for her because she has the most screen time. (I could link and example if I have to but I'd rather not).
>>
>>33601839
I don't think Archibald was supposed to shut Irene out like that. I mean, he totally did, but it was a freak accident and we had a good chance of defusing the situation by yelling for Irene.. and didn't. For some reason. Despite knowing Charlotte has no backup.

And that's not getting into how we could have easily chosen to eat lunch at Mina's house that day.
