Previously, on Avatar Quest......

Things went bad when you interfered in a duel between your father and Lee. Your father, angered by your action turned his attacks on you. In the ensuing fight, you revealed yourself as the Avatar by using Firebending. Your father panicked and prepared an attack that might very well have killed you had your mother not intervened. Your father went off by himself and you spent some time speaking with the others before going after him. The two of you made up, and your father left you in charge along with your mother and Sena while he left to deliver a report to the Queen. That night, while the others slept, you used Waterbending for the first time. The next morning, you woke to find yourself under attack by a group of bandits. You and the others were captured, but Felna managed to escape and kill several bandits. The survivors fled. Having previously revealed themselves as servants of the infamous Ming the Bandit King, it was certain that they would return in far greater numbers. Determining retreating to be suicide, you instead used your bending to create a fortress on the beach made of sand. You spoke with some of the others and got some last minute Firebending training from Felna. Now, the battle begins.
>>
>Welcome to Avatar Quest. Here are the rules.

Decisions are made by vote. Each vote has a ten minute interval, after which, the option that receives the most votes it the one that is chosen.

There are no write-ins unless explicitly stated

Some options require rolls. In that event, rolls will be out of 100. Whether rolls succeed or fail is decided by the first three rolls. If one passes, then you succeed regardless of the other two. Rolls will really only occur during training, or when trying something new.
All decisions are final. If you regret voting for something, too bad. Think carefully before you make decisions.

Try to keep waifu bullshit to a minimum.

let's try to avoid death.
>>
>>33587429
Impossible, we're simply trying to delay our inevitable death for as long as possible
>>
>>33587429
I'm in favor of this plan.

You decide to wait for the bandits to arrive.

It is over an hour before you hear anything; everyone remains relatively silent as time passes, either training, resting, or talking quietly to one another. The tension in the air is thick, as is the fear. Everybody is well aware that they may not be coming out of this alive, but they're all ready to fight until the bitter end.

When you hear the scream of the first bandit, you know the battle has begun.

Well, perhaps that isn't entirely accurate, as there is no actual fighting for several minutes after the first scream.

You don't see what is happening outside of your fortress, but the sounds you hear paint a pretty clear picture.

The scream is followed immediately by another, then another, then another as bandits either fall into the pits, or try and fail to leap over them, falling to be impaled on the spikes below.

There are cries of shock and outrage from the other bandits as they watch their friends perish. You hear some calling for your head, and the heads of all those with you. Others demand to know how they're supposed to get over the trenches.

"Silence, all of you!" a deep voice bellows.

All other voices immediately go silent.

"Our friends here have been preparing for us," the voice comments. "But I doubt they are prepared for Xing and Xang."

Loud cheering begins outside of the fortress, and you suddenly see someone just outside the entrance. He leaps over the spiked pit you set just inside, and lands in the center of the fortress.

He looks about Bulo's age, with dark brown eyes and a bald head with a faded tattoo on it.

Galda rushes at him, only to be hurled into the far wall when he thrusts a hand in her direction.

Another young man, identical to the first, enters seconds later, flinging Bulo, who was preparing an Earthbending attack, into a wall with a thrust of his arm.

"Airbenders," your mother tells you.

Lee begins to slowly walk towards them, actually managing to dodge the first two g-

-usts of wind before the two Airbenders manage to throw him away as well.

Sonyo and your mother manage to send sandblasts at the pair, but their attacks are easily dodged, and soon your mother and Sonyo are knocked back by the wind.

Sena grabs a spear and hurls it skillfully at the pair, only for it to be knocked to the side with a wind blast, the same happening to Sena an instant later.

Only yourself and Felna are left standing, and the looks on the faces of the two Airbenders suggest that they aren't at all worried about you.

"We'll take them together," Felna tells you.

If we can get them buried they are completely fucked. Also its sad so the pits could very well collapse in on themselves once the airbenders have fallen in

They'd knock away fire or sand, and just float of any pits we open, but even if they recover from the fall they're still going to be hurt if we uppercut them with some pillars.
>>
>>33587839
They'll get right out of those, I think it would be better to use the earth to grab hold of their ankles and draw them into the earth, it would also make them distracted and Felna could then finish them off.

You stomp on the spot in front of you and thrust your hands downward, focusing on the patch of ground beneath the two Airbenders.

Looks of shock appears on their faces as the ground opens up beneath them and they fall into the pit below. You prepare to pull sand down on their heads and bury them alive, but before you get the chance, they leap from the pit and send you flying backwards with powerful blasts of wind.

Felna launches a pair of fire blasts at the Airbenders while they're focused on you. However, they notice what she's doing and quickly set about dodging. However, even as they do, one of the fire blasts scorches the first Airbender's left arm.

He lets out a pained cry, and the other Airbender sends Felna crashing into the nearest wall. As Felna attempts to reorient herself, the Airbender hits her with another wind blast, pressing her against the wall and preventing her from doing anything.

"Xing, I will keep her occupied, deal with the other one," the Airbender orders.

Xing nods, turning his attention away from his badly scorched arm and to you. He pulls back his good arm, but before he can strike, he is hit by a trio of sand blasts from his right side. He falls onto his left side and winces in pain.

Looking to where the blasts came from, you see your family already preparing another strike. Before they can finish, however, they are knocked back by a wind blast provided by the second bender.

"Xang, the girl!" Xing warns.

Behind Xang, Felna take a deep breath and brings her hands down in front of her before thrusting them towards him.

Xang turns, and barely manages to leap away from the blast. As he knocks Felna back into the wall, Galda hurls a dagger that impales him through the side of his dead.

Xing lets out a horrified cry as Xang falls to the ground. Galda rushes towards Xang, but is thrown back by an enraged Xing. Xing then rushes to Xang's side, completely disregarding everyone ar-

Before anybody else can reach them, you create a fast-rising pillar beneath the two Airbenders, sending them flying into the lake with a pair of loud splashes.

You see a familiar shape begin to rise to the surface in the center of the lake. The gigantic fin of the Shark Turtle cuts through the water as the massive beast travels beneath the surface towards the two Airbenders.

Xing struggles to keep himself afloat while holding onto his brother. With his scorched arm already causing him intense pain, it's clearly extremely difficult for him to do so. So caught up is he in keeping himself and his brother from sinking, he doesn't even notice the approaching beast until it's far too late.

The Shark Turtle rises above the pair of Airbenders and lets out a mighty roar, opening its great jaws wide before its head descends and it swallows the pair. The Shark Turtle looks towards you, lets out another roar, and then submerges, vanishing from sight.

"Well, that takes care of that." your mother comments indifferently.

"Yeah, great, you just made me lose one of my new daggers," Galda grumbles at you.

"Perhaps we should announce our victory to Ming," Lee suggests.

"What, do you expect him to surrender?" Galda asks.

"Ideally, yes, though I understand your skepticism," he replies. "But, as those two were obviously of importance to Ming, and held in high regard by the others, news of their deaths should serve to demoralize them."

Liking Lee's idea, you make your way to the entrance of your fortress. It is there that you get your first look at the enemy force.

There must be hundreds of them, every last one armed with weapons ranging from daggers and swords to spears and bows. Several archers immediately take aim at you, but a man in front raises his hand, and they stand down.

He is tall and powerful looking, with long dark hair and a beard to match it. His brown eyes stare at you intensely, waiting to see what you will do.

"Xing and Xang are dead!" you announce.

The crowd roars in outrage, several of them drawing their weapons and preparing to attack you, though you find yourself wondering what the majority of them intend to do seeing as they're holding melee weapons.

"Silence, all of you!" the man in front yells. "Tell me, you who killed two of my best men, who are you?"

You leap to the side of his blast.

"Everybody, move!" you hear your mother shout as the others scramble to avoid the blast as well.

Keeping your focus on Ming, you stomp the ground in front of you. Ming's eyes narrow, as he clearly anticipates an Earthbending attack. Still, what you do catches him off guard. As you thrust your hands downward and the ground opens beneath his feet, Ming's eyes widen in surprise.

He quickly throws himself forward and catches the edge of the hole, pulling himself up and immediately moving, firing a series of fire blasts at you as he runs.

You now have multiple fire blasts coming at you and an opponent who won't hold still. You need to change your strategy.

As the fire flies towards you, you create a pillar beneath yourself and launch across the trench, your pillar being obliterated by flames seconds later.

As you move through the air, you shoot several rapid fire blasts at Ming, who avoids most of them, but does get hit in the shoulder by one. He growls in anger, but, considering how weak the blast was, you can't imagine that it did much to him.

As you land, he shoots a powerful blast of flame at you, which you step to the side of, countering with a powerful flame blast of your own. Ming steps to the side and begins rapidly firing fire at you. You dodge and shoot blasts back, throwing in a few sand blasts for good measure. This pattern continues for a few more seconds, until your right arm is caught in the edge of one of his fire blasts. At the same time, one of your sandblasts causes Ming to stagger back, and a quick fire blast from you knocks him over. Your arm hurts badly, but you have a temporary advantage.

Not wasting time, you take a deep breath and shoot a powerful blast of flame from your left arm.

Ming attempts to avoid the attack, but still gets his left arm badly scorched. He howls in pain and rolls onto his knees. He breaths heavily and deeply as you fire another blast of flame at him, not even seeing it coming. He lets out another pained howl as your attack strikes him in the back and falls to the ground, rolling onto his back and staring up at you.

You don't ask him to surrender, and you don't give him the chance to attack again.

You quickly thrust your left fist towards him and launch a small blast of flame at him. Ming rolls out of the way, but when you fire another blast from your right fist, he is struck on his right arm. He grunts in pain, but the weak blast does little to him. However, another blast from your left hand hits his already horrifically burnt left arm. He cries out and collapses, rolling onto his back once again and pulling his legs in, glaring at you hatefully.

You're not sure why, but every instinct is telling you to dodge, and quickly.

You leap to the right, and begin breathing in deeply even as Ming thrusts his legs towards you, flames pouring from his feet, and moving through the air where you were less than a second ago, barely missing scorching your legs.

You land on your side in the sand, and let out your breath with a mighty roar, or, as mighty as you can manage. A torrent of flames pours from your mouth, enveloping Ming, who shrieks in agony, rolling in the sand to put the fire out.

You rise to your feet as he screams and rolls around. Perhaps you should finish this.

"I think this counts as 'unable to continue fighting', don't you?" you ask.

You step back as a jet of flame flies up at you from down in the pit, shooting into the air before evaporating. Around you, the bandits stare at you with shock and horror. You see that the group is already significantly smaller, many of them having retreated already.

I'd hardly call that an attack. More like one last protest of his defeat. He's pretty badly hurt, I don't think he's a threat anymore. He might be later, if he somehow manages to heal from this, but we've still dealt him a huge blow. Look at how many of his men fled. We've destroyed his reputation of invulnerability and power. He claimed he was the greatest firebender in the world and we took him down without any real injury. I think he's going to see some serious desertions. He's done for.

You turn to the remaining bandits.

"Honor the deal," you tell them. "Take Ming, and leave. Never come back, this city will be impenetrable from this day forth."

Turning back towards the pit, you stomp on the ground and slowly rise your hands, rising the sand within the pit and bringing Ming to the surface. He seems to be barely breathing, but he manages to look at you, and you see nothing but hate in his eyes.

You know what's coming before it happens, and you move out of the way as he chambers his legs and kicks towards you, shooting a jet of flame from his feet. It misses by a mile, but heads right towards the fortress, causing the others to once again scramble for cover. Turning away from them, you see that Ming has collapsed in the sand, his chest no longer rising and falling, and giving no signs of life. Cautiously approaching Ming, it takes only seconds for you to confirm your suspicions.

Ming the Bandit King is dead.

"Take Ming's body," you instruct the bandits. "See to it that he gets a proper burial."

Two of the bandits cautiously move forward and approach Ming. Stooping down, they pick him up, look at you, then carry him away. One by one, the other bandits follow until they are all gone.

"Well Shin, I've seen some impressive things in my time, but I'd say you just topped the list," your mother comments.

Looking back, you see that part of the trench in front of the entrance has been lifted and the spikes pulled out, creating a bridge for everyone to cross.

Your mother rushes over to you and hugs you tight, accidentally touching the spot where you got burnt, causing you to hiss in pain. She pulls back and gives an apologetic smile.

"Sorry about that," she tells you.

"That was awesome!" Sonyo tells you. "When you launched yourself into the air and shot fire at him while you were flying, it was the coolest thing I ever saw!"

"Not bad," Galda admits. "Ming the Bandit King is an impressive kill. Of course, you had the advantage of using two elements when he only had one."

Felna grins at you. "Now that was some impressive Firebending. Good thing I taught you that technique, isn't it?"

Well, that's what I'm afraid of. We've placed a mark on our head, effectively. It was going to be put there eventually, but still not fun to know we have. We can take out Ming, but can we fight an army? Even if it's an army that's probably not very good yet, due to the fact that war was only recently invented. Like, I doubt they'd need it to overwhelm us, but I'm not even sure if cavalry exists yet. Could you confirm that, Som? Has mankind domesticated the horstritch or the komodo rhino yet?

"Yeah, thanks for that," you tell her.

"No problem," she replies. "I'm just glad you're such a fast learner."

"So, is everyone alright?" you ask.

"Yes, we didn't get hit by any of Ming's blasts," your mother confirms.

"And our injuries from getting thrown around by those Airbenders aren't bad," Lee tells you.

"Gotta say, I'm impressed," Bulo tells you. "Your Firebending was pretty great, and your Earthbending was pretty much flawless. That pit strategy was great, too."

Bulo gets a grin on his face, and Sonyo groans.

"Bulo, don't say it," Sonyo begs.

"What? I'm just saying that Shin is the master of holes," Bulo says.

"Can I kill him?" Galda asks you.

I doubt it. She'd have to overcome her issues with benders first. And while she might be okay with us and (potentially) her sister, Bulo's triggering her anger response. He's a bender and he's smarmy, that's two reasons for her to hate him.

"I want to say yes, Galda, I really do," you respond. "But, I have faith in Bulo's ability to grow as a person."

Galda raises an eyebrow.

"Or, at least, I have faith in Bulo's ability to associate his actions with pain," you clarify.

She nods.

"So, don't kill him, but feel free to inflict injury on him," you tell her. "It's the only way he'll learn."

She grins. "Well then, let's see if I'm as good a teacher as my sister."

Galda grabs Bulo by the collar and drags him towards the fortress.

"Don't break anything!" you call after her.

"Why don't you just tie my hands behind my back and throw me into a pit?" she shouts back.

"Kinky..." Bulo comments before Galda kicks him in the groin. "Ow!"

"I feel like I should probably stop this," your mother comments.

"He'll be fiiiiine," Sonyo assures her, even as Bulo starts begging for mercy.

Well, yes. He's definitely the underachiever of the family. Come on, Bulo, even Sonyo is outdoing you in Earthbending. Mom and Dad have experience on you, we have the advantage of being the Avatar, but Sonyo's just a kid. If you're getting beat by him you're embarrassing yourself.

Thanks for running. If you're sticking around for questions, would you mind addressing how we're going to feed the settlement? It's just something I'm curious about. A few generations ago human survival depended on being hunter-gatherers, so it's not clear what sort of agriculture exists. Likewise with domesticated animals. Are we going to need to clear land for fields and pastures?
>>
>>33595374
How dead is our father?
>>
>>33595395
Gonna need to clear land for foods. Domesticated animals are a thing, but mostly as pets. Livestock is kind of a rare thing. The woods are full of animals, plants, and the lake is full of fish.

Good luck

Okay, that fits with what is believed to be the case in actual human history at this equivalent point, so I'm on board. Though we'll definitely need to tame some animals, just to add some more to our city's legend. Being the place where the foxalope or the possum chicken was first domesticated would just be neat to have in our history.
