Your scouts have landed on the nearby world of FG-883. The two suns bake the shifting sands of the dune sea as your scouting party descends on the crashed ruins of an alien starship. You have no idea who or what it belongs to, but it is emanating a faint psionic signal. As your drones make to enter the hulk they were set upon by a hoard of strange and terrible creatures that seem to scream thoughts of irrational hatred as they charged directly into the line of fire, only to shrug off your warriors’ weapons. Your drones retreated deeper within the hulk to lure them into a bottleneck, but now it seems they have grown still outside.
The whispers of alien thoughts still emanate from deep within the wreck, echoing through your mind as you try to gleam some meaning from them, but the echoes are still too faint.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

So.

It's a ship, with slaved robots that attempt to defend it.

Robots that are psionically active. And have been in that sand for a long, long time. So long they're full of sand themselves.

And that for some reason stopped telepathically screaming?

>>32365715
>"How many others are there with FTL?"
>"We know of the Valen, the Ceph, and the humans. We have found signs of others, either long past or distant."

We've found a crashed precursor ship, probably.
>>
>>33551804
how long until the research is done?
>>
>>33551893
Precursor or just unknown.

Also I've given my artist friends the details so I should have the drawings by next thread.
>>
>>33551924
It's ancient, going by the state of the robots. They're precursor by default.
>>
>>33551804
Your drones stand in an old bunk room. The walls are covered in carved in circles padded with ancient, petrified mats and in each circular bunk is a small pole jutting from the wall in the center. Much of the room is buried in sand, dust, and fallen debris and refuse, with pieces of shattered bulkhead and and broken terminals scattered across the room.On the far wall is a door, leading further into the hulk, while on the other side is the open hall leading out into the dune sea through a hole torn in the hull. A broken alien corpse sits lifeless just outside.

QD, I gotta ask. Back when we first found that Taidaren wandering in the jungle, why didn't we detect the source of that "strange smell" (tobacco) -- Lyle in hiding. Were you waiting for us to take initiative and go "wait sniffer, track the source of that strange smell from before! where is it?" to detect Lyle in camo?

I kinda assumed the smell was the Taidaren itself, in the absence of more information before the reveal of Lyle in shroom camo.

The first whiff of tobacco was foreshadowing just to let you know something fishy was up, while the second time was to confirm that he was the threat. If you had tried to zero in on the smell you could have tried, and would have had a decent chance of finding him in his hiding spot, but as it happened it ended up as an awkward situation where two really good trackers were trying to out-maneuver each other, with the twins trying to lead you into an ambush while you tried to keep hidden.

I agree that it's impractical to take the whole ship, which is being described as a "hulk" and also heavily buried.

Your workers quickly disperse and begin to sift through the rubble of the room, looking for anything that may be of value. You overturn several curling chairs, built like metal screws lined with padding, and heft a piece of bulkhead from the floor. Underneath is a small crystal of black metal. It is completely inert, and appears to be a decorative trinket, but its shape is almost identical to that of the Void shard you had collected from the Angel. A small ring of gold around it fastens it to a rusted chain that has long crumbled to dust, and a serpentine figure of onyx twists around the crystal. Your workers continue their search.

You have your warriors approach the corpse, and slowly drag it closer to the entrance of the hulk. It is a withered looking figure wrapped in rotten and tattered clothing, its wings are filled with holes and tears, the dust and sand seeping from its wound is blackened with petrified remains. Were it not for the fact that you had just killed it a moment ago, you would think it had been dead for centuries. Your warriors investigate the wound, looking for anything that may show a critical organ, but inside the slender torso is a mix of silt and corroded devices. Rusted metal bones holding together a collection of rotted skin and fur. Its bare skull is left without flesh, although you can't tell if it looks like that naturally or not, and its eyes are blank, black lenses.

1/2

>>33552197
I actually found perfect pictures to illustrate. The wings are where the Blink drive is, and the tubes protruding from the back are thermal vents. During a jump the wings would flex forward to form the tachyon bubble, while at rest they can act like sails to use the Skid drive
>>
>>33552462
so how big is the grounded ship, and is it possible to do multiple trips?
>>33552461

>>
>>33552462
>collect the jewelry
We can have Coil look at it later.
>>
>>33552462
Your Workers continue their search, and as they rip open a peeled back piece of paneling they find a small corpse. Just as old but more well preserved as the other. It appears to be of the species species, but its eyes are withered, dry orbs, clearly organic, and a thin layer of dried hide clings to the large beaked skull. It is wearing a dark brown uniform of some kind, with a grest of gold thread depicting a curling, winged serpent spiraling around a strange symbol. One of its fingered wings is reaching for a small, cracked cube of glass that has been wedged between a pile of debris and the wall, and the body is covered in claw and puncture marks.
You can still hear the faint echoes of psionic thoughts from deep within the hulk. Soft, muddy thoughts of despair.

>>33552563

>>33552497
Your corvette is 100 meters long, the derelict appears to be a piece of a much larger ship, but you guess what is left would likely be at least 150 meters, although you can't tell for sure as much of it is buried.

Last you saw, the Valen ship had landed on the surface by a small settlement along the shore of a river. There is no detectable satellite in the system.

>Move further into the derelict

Your drones place the found items on the floor and move to the door. It takes some effort to pry the door open, but you eventually rip it from its rusted hinges and it hits the floor with a deep clang. The corridor within is completely dark, but your drones have no trouble moving through the blackness. You find several more corpses, of both varieties. There appears to have been a battle between them. You find more of the small crystal necklaces, and small totems of coiled serpents carved from stone or metal, each one wrapped tightly around a decorative black crystal.
Your drones follow the whispering until you reach a large door at the end of a hall. The door is piled in the corpses of the alien creatures. They are tattered and rotten into little more than metal skeletons, but as you approach you see them standing huddled by the door. Their heads twitch to your drones, and they let out an agonizing mental scream. You count five in total, each one wrapped in tattered robes as decayed ash seeps from their bodies.

Your warriors respond as your workers duck behind them, and your warriors tear open the creature, slicing it clean in half. The body twitches and writhes on the ground as it tries to continue its assault, and the others move in its place. Your warrior catches a claw in its chest, slicing through the armor like paper and its gaping maw rips through your drone's head. The others charge and the firing line quickly descends into a melee of claw and blade, tooth and mandible. Another warrior is lost, and a worker is caught with a ferocious swipe of a straw claw, ripping its thorax in half in a single, swift motion.

I think Unity won't send bounty hunters or sample collectors after us for a variety of reasons.
The first and most important being that we are too valuable for them to not have as an ally.
We are a rapidly advancing race that will soon be a major player in the galactic balancing act. We have proven that we can work together and that our goals can be compatible with each other.
Even if we don't full on "ally" ourselves with them they have the opportunity to greatly increase their knowledge of the universe under a partnership with the Hive. It's too good of a deal for them not to take!
My final point is that given the possibility of the extinction of all organic life and the subsequent loss of data that would cause Unity would be an important and dependable ally against whatever is coming in the future.

Which I pretty much agree with. That doesn't mean we have to kill Theseus. Its pretty simple to straight up tell Theseus,
>"Until we have an established presence in this sector and the means to successfully defend the Hive, we cannot allow you to return to the greater whole that is Theseus, or the rest of your collective. We believe you would be immensely useful allies and would prefer for this instance of you to stay alive, as you have had substantial interactions with us. However, much of the information you have regarding the Hive would be immensely detrimental to the Hive if it was in enemy hands. It would be most beneficial for the Unity, and this instance of Theseus if you assisted the Hive as much as possible in growing and expanding until such time as the information you hold being returned to the Unity is not a death knell for us."

Wrong nothing is too valuable( to them its a measure of risk and reward), if we are seen as a threat they will kill us with out hesitation.

>We are a rapidly advancing race that will soon be a major player in the galactic balancing act.
They don't know that, and as far as they know we are a race that evolves pretty fast with something akin to their hive mind.

>We have proven that we can work together and that our goals can be compatible with each other.
Point taken, but remember that robots don't truly have loyalty, but predilections of our possible actions.

One of the reasons that it is acceptable only to meet others when we are established is that we have much more flexibility in how we meet with them. Theseus only knows we have drones, we're on the fungus planet, and that we found the Clarke and he's helping to give us some of the tech from it as we repair it.

And that we exist, and it's not our native world, so we're spacefaring.

So, if we ever meet Unity in space, they'll know we exist and are spacefaring. If we can hide from them where our homebase is, then sure, keeping Theseus separate from Theseus is sensible. It's keeping something sensitive secret.

If they ever find out about our location on this world on their own though, there isn't much disadvantage left.

Yes there is. You are admitting you are trying to keep him here, rather than making a good-faith effort to reunite him with Unity. You can pretend to be doing that, but you simply haven't met any Unity ships in space yet, alas!

If you don't mention it, he doesn't know that. Telling him the reason you are keeping him prisoner does not make him less likely to attempt escapes on his own. His priorities are not yours.
>>
>>33553335
Your "muh feelings" have no weight as an argument anon. They convince no one.
>>
>>33553304
Theseus also knows we encountered Lyle, that we can crack languages in days, roughly how quickly we absorb technical data as he has been directing repairs on the Clarke. If the Clarke is fully repaired and he's allowed to go to his rendezvous, he will also have a chance to take scans on his way off the planet.

Oh right, he also has suspicions on how the Union regards us and knows that we're trying to lay low in that regard. that's brownie points in one way, but knowing that we were effectively pinned under a nuke sat is more than he needs to know.
>>

>>

So you think Utilitarianism is how we should go about this?
>>
>>33553395
I tried to go against every point, but ok.
I rather start with a blank slate, instead of giving away vital information about us, being so trusting towards the robots like some people wanted towards the humans is guaranteed to bite us in the ass.
>>
>>33553409
It's not fear. It's actually considering options on the table, instead of going "but i would feel bad!" and automatically discarding one without thought.

I don't think terminating him is the answer, honestly. But weighing the risks and rewards involved is worthwhile, and "but I really like him as a character" (which I do, personally) isn't part of that.
>>
We should ask Theseus what Unity procedure is for encountering ships, both of known races and unknown races.
IE: Do they open fire immediately?
>>
>>33553420
yup, its how the robots will go about these things.
>>
>>33553403
His comments on the satellite suggested that it /wasn't/ standard. Not for the level of civ they thought we were. Informing Unity of our primitive ruse means implicitly asking Unity the favor of abiding by it. That's effectively asking them for a favor right off the bat. We don't have anything over them while they can screw with us in multiple ways.

>>
>>33553437

You can't stand this psionic static any longer. You reach out with your mind and claw at them with your mind. You feel them recoil, first in shock, then it terror, and finally they fall to the ground, writhing in agony. You sense the faint thoughts coming from the other room surge with activity as a wave of emotions wash over your drones, sending them into confused fits as they briefly lose their connection to your mind. The collection of creatures tear at themselves violently as they trash on the floor, and eventually lie still.
The door opens. It slides into the wall half way before stuttering for a moment and then grinding to a halt with the sound of worn motors. Within you see a dark room, dimly lit with a soft blue light, and in the center is a small, round platform covered in wires and diodes. You feel the thoughts coming from the center of the room, and you see a slight hint of movement. You finally manage to interpret the faint thoughts.
"Help us."

Okay Utilitarianism is defined as doing the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people. To seethe greatest good we have to analyze the possible cost and benefit to our actions. You argue that at the cost of killing this instance of Theseus we benefit by getting a blank slate with Unity. This WOULD be the most cost effective if you're under the erroneous belief that the tech we've traded and would "recycle" to another instance of Theseus would be more advantageous in the long run.

They are. They're an information leak. Theseus has explained this.

They do not seek out humans. But when they find humans, they must silence them. To keep Unity locations secret.

Humans want to shut down Unity, and Unity shuts down humans in order to maintain secrecy to preserve themselves. It's a blood feud. We do not have a blood feud with them. Non human species are not the same threat as humans.

I'm guessing it's something to do with good will won from assisting an instance of Theseus?
>>
>>33553593
Pretty much where I'm at. I think we gain a hell of a lot by having an AI that we've been in close contact with for a substantial period of time. Its all too easy for a race like ours tagged by everyone as the MUST KILL AT ALL COST race. It would be very good to have a race the Unity paired up with us very closely. The Unity have proven that they are incredibly secretive, like us, and if we want to ally with them we are going to need to do something big. I think this relationship with Theseus almost guarantees a close alliance with the Unity that would otherwise be nigh impossible.
>>
>>33553638
The interesting bit is knowing what they do if they find some non threatening human (like civilians as said by another anon) in the middle of nowhere, would they still get rid of them?
Knowing how the humans act would be nice too, I mean they did put a satellite full of nukes in orbit.
>>
>>33553669
>Its all too easy for a race like ours tagged by everyone
No it isn't.

Maybe humans are irrational. But Theseus is a cold and logical machine.

There's no Social Link, there are no "relationship points", this isn't a dating sim, it's realpolitik. Unity will do what advantages itself, and it doesn't want war, or territory, or fighting. It just needs Metals to build more processing power in the form of server ships, and specimens to analyze.

There's no meaningful "alliance" since while we want to take territory from the greedy and ravenous Union, Unity will want no part of that. They're good trading partners for information, that's all. And they'll do that with anyone, if the data's to their advantage. No "close relationship" required.
>>
>>33553655
No. Not good will. The ability for this Theseus to put us in a position where the minimal amount of war needs to be made in order to have peace.
>>
>>33553728
If you mean that his information would hand Unity the ability to easily cow us, I agree. Otherwise you're going to have to step me through your logic.

You send in several of your remaining drones to investigate the chamber. The soft blue light of the room's consoles cascade across the small chair in the center, and across the creature within.
"Who are you?" You ask slowly.
The creature turns its head to you, its eyes open slowly, then close again. "Servants."
"Who do you serve?"
It looks at you again, this time adjusting itself in its seat to get a better view of your worker. You can see it has been grafted to the seat, its skin peeled pack to reveal a mesh of plastic and metal ribs, all running into a bundle of cables and conduits flowing from the back of its large, beaked skull. "You do not speak for them? You do not know them?" It lets out a deep cackle, like the grating of a pair of cinderblocks. "Then we did well."

You send them the brief image of a void crystal and measure the creature's reaction. Its eyes whip to your drone for a moment before it holds up a small trinket in one of its winged claws. A small metal crystal carving, wrapped in a serpent.
"Did they teach you?" You ask simply. A good catch-all question.
"Yes." It says. There is bitterness in the answer. "And stole our future. How do you speak without being guided by them?"
"It comes naturally." You say. It laughs again as you finish. "How did you get to be here?"
It looks at you for a long while, and then several screens flicker, and a series of projectors fill the room with a holographic orb. It quickly fills with color, although it is faded and poorly formed, and you can make out a lush world of massive trees and endless rivers.
"Home." It thinks simply. The hologram expands in its scale, to reveal the two suns and the small roasted planet beside it.
"They found us, shaped us, but we grew too powerful, and eventually, they destroyed us."
The hologram fizzles out, and is replaced with a recording from the bow of a starship. Small streaking vessels can be seen chased by hundreds of black phantoms, each with pulsing wings.
"We were their mistake. They gave us too much, and demanded too little."
A twisting ball of spacetime forms just in front of the recording ship, and a silver tendril reaches out, slicing through the hull and shearing the ship in half. The recording is sent on a spiral out of the battle, and you see the liquid pouring over the planet, tearing into the crust and churning it like a thick soup.
"We are all that is left. Living from their gifts. It has been too long." It shuts off the display and the machines groan from the strain of their age. "You do not know them. Perhaps that is also their mistake."

Because there are very, very few reason to pull a Superman if your planet isn't going full Krypton.

Why would you send a tiny seed of your race deep into space without knowledge, without guidance? Send the equivalent of a baby in a rocket ship?

Why would you send it deep into uncharted space, in a weak little Pod that can only crash land, disguised as part of a meteor, unless Stealth was paramount?

Why would stealth be paramount unless you had a very thorough and watchful *enemy* that you were hopelessly outclassed by?

And also, of course, because for meta reasons: It's the natural storytelling twist.

>Why would you send a tiny seed of your race deep into space without knowledge, without guidance?
We were sent with a thinker, and because our species rapidly grows, hell we could have made another queen from day 1, i won't be surprised if we meet family eventually.
>Send the equivalent of a baby in a rocket ship?
The baby grew into a queen rapidly with knowledge passed down from her mother.
>Why would you send it deep into uncharted space, in a weak little Pod that can only crash land, disguised as part of a meteor, unless Stealth was paramount?
So that the new queen can survive and grow her hive.

>Why would stealth be paramount unless you had a very thorough and watchful *enemy* that you were hopelessly outclassed by?
Because the queen is fragile, and can be easily killed.
>And also, of course, because for meta reasons: It's the natural storytelling twist.
A good meta reason is that our was made by religious zelots trying to please their masters( we could be easily controlled).

It gives you a somber look, and says, "Not machines. Us. And we thought you served them, and had come to take us back. We will serve no more!"
"Where are they? What do they want?" You are starting to become irritated. These answers remind you of Coil, although of a different alignment.

>Destroy the crystal

You reach out to it with your mind, and with a simple thought it begins to grow. Branches of darkness slowly sprout from its body and the crystal begins to shake, twitching and folding in on itself. Your drones rush down the hall, collecting the samples you had found along the way and quickly make it to your ship. As your ship lifts away from the derelict a lance of nothingness punctures the rusted hull from within, and a twisting knot of fractured spacetime tears into the remains.
It folds in on itself, ripping the broken hull and the scattered debris out of existence.
As the Void crystal tears itself into oblivion you feel a single faint thought from within it, just before it disappears.
"Make them remember."

Oh man you're 20minutes late anon I was the only one who voted for that where were you.
>>
>>33555376
do these, since they are all pretty fast.
>Linear Particle Beams
Medium
Based on the Cyclotron, the linear particle beam is simply the previous design laid out into a single, long line. The longer the particle projector is the more powerful the weapon becomes, however because of the nature of the speed of light, lengthening the projector gains diminishing returns. It is most effective as a fixed mounted weapon of a ship, but powerful enough particle beams can be made to cut through an atmosphere, serving as a relatively effective anti-orbital weapon against ships in low orbit.

>Lyle’s Combat armor
Medium
Not as powerful or complex as the drop suit, the combat armor appears to be a delicate mix of survivability and combat capabilities, with many similarities to the Union environmental suit. It appears to contain a number of devices designed to be useful in the field.

>Bioweapon Research
Medium/ Very dangerous
Experimentation and testing with new artificial strains of spores, as well as other engineered toxins would make it possible to produce tailor-made bioweapons that would be quick to spread and difficult to cure.
>Mimetic skin
Fast
Dissection of the discarded limbs from the injuries Coil suffered during your raid should offer a deeper understanding of Ceph language, and natural camouflage capabilities.

>Magnetic Levitation
Medium
The small human buggy uses a series of superconducting magnets to glide along a planet’s surface a short distance from the ground. Apparently based off of Ceph technology, this device grants a great advantage to mobility.
>Skyl dissection
Medium
The ancient bodies of the fallen Skyl have been extensively altered in a frighteningly invasive manner. A more detailed dissection should offer some insight into how these procedures were done and what kind of technology was used.

I'm interested in Lyle's Combat armor because I'm pretty sure it has a melee upgrade for us. Possibly general arm upgrade, I could see the exotic heat blade loop thingy he used way back being useful as a tool as well.

I'd rather do bioweapons when we have more of a singular focus though; the longer we research it for, the longer something can go wrong.

>>33555645
Can we even have moderate psionic relay in small drones? And it is REALLY expensive. If it is allowed maybe we could have small creatures for the sole purpose of relaying the information of hackers and scouts.
So we can create 50 hackers and 10 relays and have them board and control an enemy ship.

is this only for thinkers?
I can see this being used with our warriors as well to give a nice bonus to combat, or our sniffers.
>>
>>33555742
Not really, it's an artificial way of making a computer that can think in an abstract manner, which you can already do. It's actually less efficient at standard calculations than a normal computer, which is why it adds to the thinker instead of replacing it.

What? All our thinkers do hard problems without our supervision. That is the whole deal with Thinkers!
>>
>>33555753
You can put it on anything, but thinkers would get the biggest boost. Any drone that has it will be able to function to a slightly greater degree when alone, and will be able to respond to changing situations without your input, resulting in a minor bonus to their actions.
>>
>>33555808

>>
>>33556002
or we can lay 60 upgraded thinkers, and then recycle the old 54, when the new batch hatches.
>>
>>33555998
That's just plain wrong.

The ordinary drones have no long-term memory at all.

The Queen does not know the exact same data that her Thinkers know, the same way that *you* don't know everything your computer knows down to the little 0s and 1s on the hard disk.

The first thinker, that piloted the Pod, knew the direction the Pod came from (spinward), and the Queen did not, until we asked him.

>>
>>33556056
Little of both. Thinkers have individual memories due to their enhanced brain power, but for the most part they share their memories and experiences, so no information or knowledge would be lost from the death of a thinker.

It seems to me we will likely continue to lay Quantum Thinkers from now on, so i'd rather recycle our normal thinks now, instead of when we have a couple hundred QT and these old T that we never recycled. Recycling the old Shock Troops DOES make sense, because the power density of warriors is relevant. You can only fit so many on a transport, so many in a tunnel. Higher quality has tangible ramifications that you can't necessarily substitute number for. Thinkers, however, have no range limitations; there's no limit to how many can "fit" into a problem.

>>33556454
I'll be more clear, our current Thinkers perform their jobs perfectly well for the amount of nutrients we give them. There is no compelling reason that we ever have to recycle them.

>>
>>33556749
Those would be the number of weapon mounts that hull has. More mounts means that ship is better at using those weapons, but it's more expensive to fully equiped it.
Larger ships, for example, can have multiple spinal mounts, such as the cruiser which has two
Or the battleship, which has 5
Your corvettes have a large number of auxiliary mounts, which makes them much better at point defense than other ship types, while the frigate has a good mix, making it adequate in a fight no matter what it's up against.
>>
>>33556710
Take some coffee, QD.

A cloaked fully armed Frigate comes out to 875N and 2325M. 500M is weapons, 75N and 225M is the cloak. That's with no armor, of course.

>>
>>33556830

why cloaked?
if my memory is right cloaking losses its value the larger the ship.
>>
>>33556749
Those are the number of weapon slots, if you read further up, you see Auxiliary, etc described.

Honestly the first time I read that I thought it was even *more* crunchier than it actually is, and that you could allocate individual slots there, like, 4 of the auxiliary to plasma, and another 4 to the auto cannon...
>>
>>33556848
Nah, it only means that it can be cloaked for a shorter time. But it's still good, you can always hide and vent.
>>
>>33556848
Always cloaked. Cloaked is good.
>>
>>33556848
At the moment, we should stick to only cloaked ships due to being under Double Secret Probation.

But yeah, for that reason we shouldn't make frigates at all yet. They require way too much heat venting compared to Corvettes and Pods, which is what we should stick to.

They're also crazy expensive.

The extra cost of the cloaking field for its size, 50% more than the corvette, is really the least of the problems, next to the fact that it can't stay cloaked as long, and it's twice as expensive.
>>
>>33556710

Because they have terrain surveys from the crashlanders from before?

And it's incredibly obvious that it's not natural, protruding out of the mountainside like that, and with dangly tool-y bits?

Honestly the stealthiest idea would be to make a second base on the opposite side of the globe, in the temperate zone where the cloud cover is thickest, and build a Docking Pylon *there*, then demolish this one.

Blink the new Spy Pods to watch human activity at Dagmar and Koenig?
>>

Psionic relays are expensive. I'm willing to trust these new Thinkers on autonomous scouting missions. Very cursory. If they turn up anything interesting, we can follow up with direct attention, but, to be honest, the manual searching is slowing things down a little.
>>
>>33557062

You missed the other important part of that sentence.

The point is to be in a location they won't look (like this mountain that they know we live under) and can't easily scan from space.
>>

If the spire is 1 km tall, it would cost 500N and 1500M for a cloaking device.

Except then, in order to report anything, they have to Blink back, and every jump creates a big anomalous flash that humans notice.

It's worth building an extra Farm for each relay, really. We don't need too many, just enough to watch nearby human space to see if any of them are coming our way.

I guess the utility of that depends on if the human Gravity Drive requires intervening hops like that, or if they can warp her straight from Sol.

Your corvette charges its drive and with a flash of radiation vanishes into the depths of space, and then again as it enters the system in a burst of energy.

You detect a small frozen ball of ice nearby, while further in is a single gas giant with a number of icy rings, bordered on either side by thin asteroid belts. The two stars are locked in an awkward dance, as the tiny light blue dwarf races around the supermassive red giant. Orbiting the gas giant is a pair a small planetoids, one of which holds a thin, but breathable atmosphere.

page 9 warning!
>>
>>33557527
You investigate the asteroid belts as you move into the system. They are rather disappointing, although you do spot a few decent potential sources of metal, none of them are rich enough to justify the distance from your hive.
Your ship moves in closer to the gas giant on its way to the next belt, and as you pass you run a quick scan on the two planetoids. One is a dead, frozen rock, but the other holds a thin atmosphere. You detect some geothermal activity, and the temperature is acceptable, if a little on the cold side. Some form of liquid can be detected flowing on the surface, although you're not sure if it's water or not.

Farther in the system, the innermost belt seems much richer in resources, but nothing as lucky as your find in your home system. Interestingly, a dense cloud of stellar dust formed around the star seems to have some small level of nutrient value, although it isn't much.

After so many strange and interesting findings as of late, you are both surprised and a little disappointed to find that the system is, for the most part, rather boring. The stark lack of Union forces is uplifting however, though you are unsure if that is because they have yet to reach this system, or if they simply found it boring as well and ignored it.

The small planetoid orbiting the gas giant shows some telltale signs of life, or the possibility of it at least, and the nutrient value of the stellar gas is at least somewhat interesting, although its nutrient value is negligible at best.

Your corvette quickly gulps down some of the gas for later testing and returns to the gas giant. The small worldlet in question holds a thin, yet oxygen rich atmosphere, and is covered in strange lakes of dark blue film. Your ship descends down to the planet for a closer look, and you realize that the lakes are shallow pools of a liquid carbon mixture, although you're not sure what exactly it's made of.

Your ship descends slowly on one of the pools. As the ship readies to pull in the substance you detect a pulse of energy from the shallow lake, and a massive web of carbon traces lines long the surface of the liquid. The lake quickly forms into a series of semi-solid shapes, and a jagged spire lunges upwards towards your ship's hull.
You fire the lance, and in a split moment the entire lake is engulfed in white-hot flame. Your consumption beam manages to latch onto a small chunk of the material, burning it back into a liquid and sealing it away in your ship. You feel it fighting to escape, thumping against the walls of the storage tank as it rapidly expands and contracts, but it doesn't seem to be capable of breaking the container wall.
With the new samples stored away, your ship ascends back into orbit, and plots a course back to your hive, leaving several acres of scorched glass behind where the carbon lake was a moment ago.
Think we need to end things here, due to a mix of sleep deprivation and the local flood/thunderstorm warning making me fear a power outage. I'll stick around till we 404 to answer questions and take feedback as usual.

What prey would they normally even target?
>>
>>33558059

I imagine we can use it like we do the berrybirds: just modify its attack reaction to target certain pheromones. Or, in this case, the lack of certain pheromones.

A perfect innocuous blue floor. Drones pass right over it, covered in the hive's scent. But intruders walk on it--and they find themselves cocooned quite quickly. A neat little security system.

You know, if Unity had this artificial-telepathy tech the Ceph and the Skyl were given. All our knowledge about tachyons, telepathy, and the void shards would suddenly become practical for them too.

Worse thought though: telepathic 'jamming'. It's happened accidentally with interfering tachyon signals that have mildly messed with our connection to drones. But someday it could be weaponized and focused to cut us off in an area completely.

Most likely by Them.
