You are Melarracal, a recruit of the Renais army, and you have recently had your sternum mended.
Current Stats:
Recruit
Level 4
Weapon Rank: Lance D
Supports: Forde E

I spent the whole night in the medical tent after the healers made sure my sternum was the only thing broken. Sergeant Hearthsted came by to tell me to be more careful, and tell me that we had an assignment the next day.

Well, that was last night. And now the sun is rising and I have been given the okay to leave the medical tent!

First things first,

[] Find Hearthsted and get my orders!
[] FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!
[] Find ________ and talk about _________

[X] FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

FOOD! I need food!

The Healers gave me an early supper last night, so I’m starving right now! Figuring I should save what little gold I have, I head to the mess tent. Only to find it nearly devoid of people.

The only other person here is the green haired knight, Kyle, who appears to be in charge of preparing breakfast. Which is a big job for just one person, and I’d offer to help, but, uh, well…

>What do I do?
>>
>>33535943
Get some food on our stomach and then help the man.
>>
>>33535943

[X] Get food
[X] Offer to help a bit after eating and if we have time before the assignment

No loss in being nice.
>>
First things first, I walk up to Kyle, who is just wearing a green tunic and a pair of slacks. He looks up from the large, and I do mean LARGE, bowl of oatmeal and smiles. “Good morning, help yourself to whatever you want.”

“Thanks!” I say as I fill up a plate full of eggs, sausages, oatmeal, and toast. I’ve often been told that I eat a lot for one so small, but I’m still a growing girl so I need to eat a lot! Of course, I also eat fast too. So I’m done with my entire plate in a matter of minutes, and boy, that hit the spot!

Now that I’m fed, it’s time to see if Kyle could use some help. “Excuse me, Sir Kyle? Would you like a hand?” Please say no, please say no, please say no…

“That would be much appreciated.” He says warmly.

Darn it!

Trying not to let myself sound disappointed I ask him, “What would you need me to do?”

“I just need some more sausages and eggs cooked. I can handle the rest.” Oh. I can do that. It’s just making sure they don’t burn, right?

I wonder if I should make small talk while I’m here?

>?
>>
>>33536289
Mention our upcoming assignment. Perhaps he has some advice for his juniors' survival?
>>
>>33536289
>>33536376
Seconded.
>>
“So,” I say as I plop some sausages down into a pan, “My sergeant told me I have an assignment coming up, but I don’t know what it’s about. Do you?”

He simply shakes his head. “Sorry, you’ll have to ask your sergeant. But, I wouldn’t worry too much. From what I’ve heard, you have a good team. They’ll back you up.”

“It’s kind of weird. I’m used to always being told what to do and how to do it. But here, everything seems so free.”

“That’s a good thing,” he says, starting to make even more oatmeal, “We need to have some freedom outside of battle, even in it. If everyone just followed orders, we wouldn’t be able to rally ourselves if our plan was ruined.” I nod in slight understanding.

“Do you have any advice for a rookie like me?”

“Hmm, I would say, trust in your allies. Trust is one of the most important things between us right now.”

>Anything else?
>>
>>33536485
Ask him if he has any advice for fighting armored foes, given how our sparring match last night went.
>>
“How do you think I should handle an armored foe?” I say as I start scrambling some eggs.

Kyle looks at me critically, and then his expression softens considerably. “Don’t go in head first. Try and attack from their sides or catch them off guard. Failing that, make sure you have an ally to back you up. Also, aim for their joints. The armor is weakest there.”

“Anything else?”

“Not that I can think of.” He says eyeing the sausages that I nearly forgot about.

I continue to help for another couple minutes before excusing myself.

I should…

Poor guy. He gets hit by Dark Magic, which starts giving him nightmares, and then he goes and accidentally breaks our sternum? He must be feeling like shit by now.

What Orpheus said. Gareth Support could be useful.

>>33536694
Talk to Gareth.
Like >>33536930 and >>33537000 point out, Gareth may be in a dark (pun partially intended) place. We need to show him we are okay and make sure he is not't beating himself up over it.
>>
I should really check up on Gareth, make sure he isn’t beating himself up over what happened last night. It was an accident after all. Now, where should I look?

Training field.

Of course he’s out here.

“Hey, Gareth!” I call out to him and he abruptly stops his drills.

“Mel, are you alright?” He sets his training lance aside and walks over to me, armor clinking the whole time.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Those staves work miracles!” I laugh, trying to help ease his tension.

“I am so sorry for last night. It wa-“

“It was just a reflex, yeah. Don’t worry about it.” I say firmly. “I learned my lesson, ‘always be ready to dodge’.”

“I suppose that’s one thing to take away from that.”

>What now?
>>
>>33537938
Rematch time? "The best way to learn is to fight someone better than you."
>>
>>33537938
Rematch, rematch!
>>
>>33537938
Put Kyles advice to good test.
>>
“So~” I say musically, “How about a quick rematch? First one to score three good hits is the winner?”

“Are you sure?” He asks, looking a little uncomfortable. I nod confidently. “Alright, you’re on.”

With Training lances in hand, the two of us make our way to the center of the field, and we get a couple spectators.

>How should I handle this?
>>
>>33538076
Oh, right roll d100, best of 3
>>
Rolled 52

>>33538076
Follow Kyle's advice: go for the joints, and get behind him/get him from the sides.
>>
Rolled 34

>>33538112
Pretty much. We're more agile, we need to abuse the fuck out of that. Especially cause we don't have much armor compared to him.
>>
Rolled 28

>>33538076
Do what Kyle said.
>>
>Rolled 52

I should focus on doing what Kyle suggested. Aim for the joints and use my speed to my advantage.

I move in quick and give a thrust to his shoulder, but he deflects it with his lance goes to counter. I dodge his counter by jumping to the side. This time I feint left, but quickly change it up to hit his right knee. It doesn’t take him down this time, but it does stagger him. “One,” I say smirking.

He responds by sweeping me off my feet with his lance. “One” He responds, waiting for me to get up.

>New Strategy?
Three more rolls please.
>>
Rolled 68

>>33538285
Agility works well. We should try to feint him with out entire body - make as if we're gonna go left, but jump right instead when he goes to hit us.
>>
Rolled 36

>>33538285
This time, try getting behind him. If need be, distract him with a feint.
>>
Rolled 11

>>33538285
Keep going, we seem to be doing well enough. Though I do wonder if he's holding back after yesterday.
>>
>>33538352
>>33538354
I swear, the dice are trying to kill us...
>>
>>33538411
I think it's my and Orpheus's fault. RNGeezus seems to hate PACYOA participants.
>>
>Rolled 68

Almost as soon as I stand back up, Gareth is right there going for another thrust. I spin my lance and deflect it, but it was a trick. His lance was lower than expected and gets me in the shin. “Two.”

I disengage and try to think of a new option. Simple feints won’t cut it here.

Right.

I move left and make it look like I’m going to thrust, and he takes the bait. Quickly, I jump to the right and get a good thrust to his elbow, causing him to hiss in pain. “Two.” I quickly disengage again, knowing full well that going for a second hit would be pushing it right now.

Gareth adopts a highly defensive stance. His weight on his heels, allowing him to pivot easily should I try that trick again.

>?
Last d100 roll for now. Best of 3

Rolled 48

>>33538654
Go for it. You can do it.
>>
Rolled 16

Of course. Good rolls when they don't count...
>>
>>33538752
No. Why would you do this!? We NEEDED that dice roll for later, EQ! And you just stole it from us T_T
>>
Rolled 19

>>33538654

Got here late, but going to roll anyway for the sake of rolling
>>
>>33538788
Even worse, it is probably the likelihood of another curse flare-up. Let's just hope it is a low-roll type and he doesn't try to kill us again.
>>
>Rolled 48

I should hold back. Going in now is just reckless. Let him come to me.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I won’t try to fake him out.

Step, thrust, pull back! I repeat the process of taking a step forward, doing a half –thrust, and jumping back. Each time he gets more and more jumpy.

There’s a small crowd around us now, watching and taking bets. As I notice this, this seems to be the moment Gareth was looking for.

He moves in, thrusts towards my chest, but I dodge with relative ease. I return the favor with a thrust of my own.

But…

I missed. And now Gareth is thrusting his lance towards my face! I close my eyes reflexively, but nothing happens.

Slowly, I open them to see the tip of his lance stopped just before my nose. “Uhhh…”

It quickly taps me on the nose. “Three!” Gareth announces, laughing loudly.

“Good match,” says a familiar, authoritative voice says from behind me. I spin around to see the Sergeant standing there, once again, in full armor.

“Sir!” I quickly snap to attention and Gareth does the same.

Behind Hearthsted is the rest of your squad, who quickly move in line with you and Gareth.

“I have orders from Lord Ephraim himself that we are to move out ahead of the main army and secure supply points along the road.” Hearthsted announces. “This will be a difficult job for us, but we have been given funds to equip ourselves with, as well as the authority to hire any mercenaries we may encounter.” He nods to Christine. “These supply points are fairly well guarded, but nothing we won’t be able to handle if we work together.” He looks at the five of us and quickly asks, “Any questions?”
>>
>>33539163
>Yes. Can we buy Siegmund?
>Seriously, though...

What sort of resistance are we going to be expecting?
>>
Rolled 55

>>33539163
"Have our scouts given us any intelligence reports as to what we might expect?"

We need to know, or at least try to know, before we buy equipment.
>>
Okay, feel free to ask more questions. Candlewick can answer anything about the setting. I need to take a break to mow the lawn and what-not.
>>
>>33539606
Indeed. I am EQ's right hand dude. Feel free to ask questions, talk about FE in general, etc. Who knows, maybe I'll ask you guys some questions. Have at me, /tg/.
>>
>>33539672
>En-garde, then! Nah, seriously though. SS. What sort of strategy would you recommend? I've been focusing on trying to level up Eirika at the expense of, say, Seth. Not sure if that's completely wrong to do, though.
>>
>>33539760
Seth can handle himself for the most part. He's a crutch character ala the "Jeigan" archetype, but unlike most he's still usable by the endgame. I would say try to keep Erika leveled, since she's required for most stages when she's there, but do keep in mind the Tower of Valni can help you grind later, which is the main advantage of SS over other FE games.
>>
>>33539825
The... Tower of Valni?
>>
>>33539869
First time playing, eh? Basically it's a tower map that opens up filled with enemies for you to fight through. A very typical strategy for that game is to grind the lower floors to level characters up.
>>
>>33539932
Ah. I presume the levels are repeatable? And yeah, I was the guy in the first thread who had never played FE before.
>>
>>33539951
Yeah, you can repeat them. I believe you get the choice at the end of each floor whether or not to go on. There are 10 floors I think, each tougher than the last. But the Tower isn't too hard. That would be the Ruins that open up at the end of the game. Fuck those Ruins, man.
>>
>>33540001
Heh. Sounds... Interesting. BTW, is there anything stopping me from just savescumming my way into perfect levels for every level for every character, aside from time? Or do save-states not work that way?
>>
>>33540033
I don't think there is, though I never have done it myself. Typically perfect levels aren't even close to being necessary.
>>
>>33540033
I can help with that one. In Sacred Stones, there's a sort of 'seed' that dictates how things will turn out. So, if you save, level up, and then load and level up the exact same character with the same weapon against the same enemy, with no other characters moving, the level will turn out exactly the same. You'll have to change SOMETHING before every attempt on leveling up, so it'll take quite a long time.
>>
>>33540061
Unless one is the kind of person who obsessively trains his Pokemon with perfect EVs. Who levels up his FFTA Viera as Assassins and his FFTA Humans as Blue Mages before swapping their classes.

>>33540071
Thanks, I figured it would be something like that.
>>
>>33540033
at the outset of each level, a long, long list of numbers is randomly generated and used to determine the outcomes of combats and level-ups

It is actually possible to abuse this RNG via abusing the pathing, but even that is an imperfect method as you can only force the system to dig further into its list, rather than generate the specific numbers you want
>>
>>33540094
Ah. I'm not one of those people so I basically just take what the RNG gives me. It makes characters different each playthrough too, if only by a small margin.
>>
Alright, fielding a question. For those familiar with Sacred Stones, where in Magvel would you like to see us go? Personally I'm hoping we make a turn towards Jehanna. Love me some deserts.
>>
>>33540895
I'd like to see Jehanna too. Maybe Rausten?
>>
>>33540895
It's been quite some time since I've played Sacred Stones, but I'd like to visit Frelia or Rausten. Jehanna would mean trouble from a tactical standpoint for Mel, but it'd be nice too.
>>
>>33540959
>>33541014
Rausten is as fine a place as any. I would like to run into L'archel.
>>
>>33541100
And what's-his-face. Dozla. Hiring a Thief might not be a bad idea, too.
>>
>>33541310

Alright! Done mowing my lawn with a push mower in the warm and humid hell that is where I live! Give me a little bit to cool down and re hydrate and we'll be up and running again!

Aye, we're basically Amelia if she started out as a Knight of Renais.

>>
>>33542065
>>33542086

Correct, Female Recruit in blue armor is all I've said at this point. In part because I want you to use your imaginations, but if you want you can choose what Melarracal looks like.

Funny, this is basically what we were gonna go with, except with brown hair. The all important question now: hairstyle?

I'm going to suggest a ponytail, but if any of you want another one, please chime in.
>>
>>33542269
Hmm. Ponytail could work, I guess. Personally I prefer long-ish hair. Maybe with one of those weird little braid-things that starts from both temples and joins together in the middle?

Also, I'm guessing we don't want to use any of:

Forgot my name. I hate trying to post on multiple boards. So we have one for a ponytail, one for Amelia, and one for long hair?

>>33542489
Honestly, if everyone's dead-set on the ponytail, the second pic I suggested should be pretty easy to shoop for a char sheet or something.

“Just one sir, what kind of resistance will we be encountering?” I ask, feeling a little antsy.

“Our targets are occupied towns and one mineshaft.” He explains. “From what we can gather, there are just token forces in the towns. Enough to keep them sending supplies to Grado, but not enough to properly defend them from an attack. The mineshaft however,” Hearthsted hesitates for a moment before continuing, “it is not a priority target, but the ore we excavate from it help keep us armed. It is the farthest south, just bordering Grado, and would likely be our last stop.”

“Sir,” Gareth says. “When do we move out?”

“As soon as you all prepare.” He goes down the line handing everyone a hefty pouch of gold. “Each pouch contains two-thousand gold. You are to meet back here in no more than two hours. Dismissed!”

As soon as he says that everyone takes off to prepare.

Alright, I bought a new Iron Lance, two vulneraries, and an antitoxin. Kellen gave me a weird look when I told him about the antitoxin, but it never hurts to be prepared. Gareth bought a shiny Steel Lance, Chris bought another Iron bow, and Christine bought some vulneraries. Since this is all we are being given, we need to make it last.

Even if I only have seven hundred and three gold left.

Hearthsted has us fall into formation. Christine in the air as lookout, Gareth and him up front, Chris and I in the middle, and Kellen bringing up the rear. We set before noon and made great time. Hearthsted informed us that we would be reaching our first destination by midday tomorrow.

Right now, we’re setting up camp for the night.

Just as Chris is about to set out on his hunt, I run up to him and offer to help.

“You can hunt?” He asks skeptically.

“Uh, well, not really. But who knows what you’ll find out there. It might be best if you have someone watching your back.”

“Hmm,” he thinks about it for a moment before assenting. “Alright, thanks.”

It’s a relatively open field around where you made camp, and even after a long walk I can still see the light of the campfire. I can’t help but marvel at the beauty out here. The night sky looks so big down out here. Nothing like back in the capital where we had towers and mansions all around. Looking back to the field, I see something off in the distance. “Chris,” I whisper, “ what’s that over there?”

He looks where I’m pointing and nods. “A deer.” He knocks an arrow, takes aim, and fires.

The shot looks high, but looks can be deceiving, which in this case they are. The arrow strikes the deer and it falls over. We quickly rush over to it, me feeling sorry for the poor thing, and Chris being excited over his amazing shot. The arrow was a perfect shot, right in the eye, killing it immediately.

“Help me haul this thing back to camp, will you?” He asks, retrieving his arrow.

“Alright.” I say as I help lift the beast. It’s a young deer, but it will definitely keep us feed tonight.

Back in camp, Chris sets to work skinning and cooking the deer over a flame when he admits that he hadn’t seen it. “I was eyeing a rabbit, to be honest.”

>>33544409
And you did, which is sad cause we coulda used a roll that high for when we actually need it.
>>
>>33544517

Good, because pompadour wouldn't work on a girl, especially in this setting.

Keep that hairstyle in the many, many KLK quests.

>>33544520

Rolls are determined by the time of the post, so it really wouldn't matter anyway. Rolls are pointless until the QM calls for it. There's no such thing as wasting rolls.
>>
>>33544517
sorry for fowling this up with the pompadour thing, hue. Didn't expect it to actually cause a ruckus
Mel is in training to become a knight, right? I'm guessing that's why people opt to spar Gareth so much
>>

>>33544607
We just like Gareth is all. We could still go Cavalier or Knight.
>>
Christine looks like she’s almost done eating too, so I ask her if she wants to spar.

“Hmm? Sure. I take it you want me off my Pegasus.” I nod. “Alright, give me just a moment.” When she’s done, the two of us go off to the far side of camp, where we can still see because of the campfire, but won’t accidentally hit the tents. Everyone is looking on intently, especially the sergeant. “So, you ready?”

“Yep!” I heft a training lance that the Sergeant brought. He seems to have brought a fair bit of other supplies too.

“Alright then!” Christine shouts as she makes the first move. She goes for a low sweep with her lance.

>Response?

Anyway, plan. Chances are she'll attack from an oblique angle. Plant our feet, keep the guard up, and when she gets close enough, lunge.
>>
>Rolled 93 (Halleluiah!)

Even with her erratic movements, I feel really calm right now.

Her movement has changed and she’s now going for my left, so I take a page out of her book and give a wide sweep to her legs. She jumps, as I predicted, and I quickly raise my lance to hook her leg midair, screwing with her jump and making her fall flat on her face.

I move back as she stands back up. “Not bad kid,” She says with a smile. “Not bad at all.” She spins her lance around herself deftly and advances slowly, still spinning her weapon.

If she's spinning her lance like that, she's just trying to hide the angle (Or she got a crit, depending on her class without the pegasus). Probably want to either go defensive and hope for a counter, or just go full charge and hope for the surprise.

I'm voting for the second one off hand. This shot will end it, regardless of who wins.
>>

If the QM wants a difference dice system, 3d10 is a better system than 2d50, less variance.

1d100 is usually decent though, just not coming through today.
>>
She’s showing off with that spinning. It also leaves an opening that I don’t plan on ignoring!

I swing my lance to deflect her spinning, but she quickly swings her lance to counter my own, knocking me off balance before going for another swing, hitting me in the side and sending me sprawling.

“Owww…” That really hurt! It’s definitely going to leave a mark, even through my armor! Luckily, it doesn’t feel like anything is broken, so I can keep going for now.

Urgh, Christine is smirking cockily as I stand back up. “Had enough?” She asks in her usual polite and soft voice.

“Not yet!” I spit back. Finding it a little hard to keep my cool when she’s acting so arrogant. She’s not making any moves to attack, so I guess this means it’s my turn!

>ATTACK! (HOW?)

>Rolled 67 (Improving)

I go in fast and hard with a feint to the chest, she attempts to block my lance but it’s too late. I’ve changed my trajectory and successfully clipped her upper thigh, in the same motion I spin my lance and smack her in gut with the butt of it.

She jumps back quickly, looking a little worse for wear, but it didn’t seem like that was too effective. Still, it makes me feel a little better.

Christine starts strafing me, but I keep my eyes locked on her. After a moment of this she breaks into a sprint around me!

Hey guys I just realized something: the bad luck is /tg/'s version of that freaking retarded 'battle flow' system they used in FE10 (I don't remember if that was in 9). Hated that thing. It basically never worked in my favor, except when it didn't matter at all.

No way! I am not letting her get behind me! I spin in place and keep her in my sights the best that I can, ready to block any attack.

She keeps this up for almost a minute, and I’m starting to feel dizzy, but I won’t let it bother me! But if this keeps up, I’ll surely fall.

Then it hits me!

I stick my lance out and start spinning the OPPOSITE direction.

Christine did not see that one coming, and she gets a chest full of lance for her troubles, as well as a back full of grass.

Despite my dizziness, I manage to put my foot on her chest and hold my training lance at her throat.

Good news and Bad news /tg/.

Bad news is, I'm falling asleep at my computer.

But hey, you guys were great! Keep being awesome /tg/!
>>
>>33546044
No, it was this weird chart that every character had. Different characters had different wavelengths that moved up and down steps depending on their chart with each turn.

It was terrible. Being in a bad 'step' killed your accuracy and dodge, among other things, so you couldn't hit crap even with good characters (and that's even worse when it hurts the Dawn Brigade members, who mostly have terrible stats and don't get enough EXP for later on).

Being in a good step was great, but those basically never happen except when it doesn't matter one bit.
>>
>>33546084

the dice gods are fickle, heh
>>
>>33546262
Yeah, it was an interesting idea, but terribly implemented.

It's worse on Hard mode, where being in a bed step can kill your characters. It didn't help that which step they started the battle on was random. So during the crucial opening of a difficult level, you could end up with a lot of your characters on a poor or bad step, while your enemies were on good steps.

AAGH! All my hate.
>>

So we're actually half-way to promoting? Neat! I'm guessing we're planning on heading towards Knight then General? At least, that was the impression the first thread gave me.
>>
Honestly? I'm more interested in possibly going Cavalier myself.

The dream of being a knight in shining armor, atop our valiant steed.
>>
I've been wondering, do we HAVE to follow the pre-set promotion routes? I mean, is it possible we could become a Pegasus Knight ourselves? We're already using lances.
>>
>>33546524
There's an interesting thought. I didn't consider that!

I think we're still thinking too much in game logic.

Something to ask EQ, I think.

The image of Mel sitting, terrified in her saddle as the Pegasus flies through the air for her training is a tempting image.
>>
>>33546524
Or if we wanna get really crazy, a Wyvern Knight, perhaps?
>>
>>33546392
We could split the difference and go Great Knight in the end.
>>
>>33546573
Nah, nah. If we can promote outside the traditional paths, Wyvern Knight is the only way to go.

>>33546585
Yeah. Because fucking DRAGONS.
>>
>>33546524
Class choices were tied into our starting character. Pegasus knights were one of the Frelia choices. Renais was knights and Cavaliers.

>>
>>33546618

So how would we have gone about getting a Wyvern Knight?

I'm not above kidnapping a Manakete into slavery if that's what it takes.
>>
>>33546715
Grado start. Also Manakete are not the same mounts as Wyverns.
>>
>>33546736

Mounting Manakete is not a thing. At least not in this context.
>>
>>33546736
That's what I thought. Man, classes being restricted by nation is kind of a downer.
>>
>>33546736
I know, I know, I was kidding. In retrospect? I wish we had gone with Grado. Redemption stories are always cooler.

As are Wyverns.

If we kill Valder, can we steal his mount?
>>
>>33546763
Humorous though it would be, no. Mounts are fiercely loyal. When we put down Valter, the wyvern gets put down too.
>>
>>33546828
>Mounts are fiercely loyal
That's funny considering Awakening's class change mechanic.
>>
>>33546828
Yeah, figures as much. Ah well, too bad. Maybe next time someone does a FE quest we'll make sure to ask how the classes are governed.

Unless we can get a Wyvern Knight to train us while we're still a raw Recruit, full of unbridled (get it? Cause flying mounts? It's funny) potential...

>>
>>33546618

>>
>>33546940
Oh well! Maybe next FE quest then.
>>
>>33546951
Thinking about it, riding flying mounts is a highly specialized career choice I would imagine. You'd need training in getting used to it, which we sorely lack since we didn't grow up in Frelia or Grado.

We'd have to learn on the field and that would just get us killed.
>>
>>33546951
The QM's mechanics. I understand some of you want to be something else, I wanted to be a Myrmidon, but no one else voted for Jehanna. It's just how it is.
>>
>>33546618
Aw man, really? That's the kind of information we shoulda been told before voting for where we started out in.
>>
>>33547027
Yeah, I'll relay this kind of thing to EQ. It is his first quest. He did try to imply it in the names a bit like "a mercenary in Jehanna", "a knight of Renais", but if we do this again we'll have to be a bit more clear.
>>
Sorry guys, I tend to forget my thought process doesn't follow everyone else's.

Meaning when I thought that the choices were "obvious" means they really weren't. I'll keep that in mind from now on.

So sorry for that, but hey, think about it like this. PERFECT GUARD MOTHER FUCKERS!!
