You are Sireyi Valyenya, 18 years old, you are on your first quest.

You have retrieved the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn. But now you’re lost on another plane, trying to find your way home.

You've recently escaped being sold on the slave block, and are on your way back to your friends.

After letting the slavers and the slaves go, and ensuring they have gone in different directions, Gendric, Jal and yourself head back towards the Island of Storms. Gendric estimates that without the slave caravan it should only take 5 days to get back to Ravensport.

You decide against riding the lightning for now, partly because you’re not certain of the distance to the Island, and partly because you can sense Ebonsong and the Horn in a direction that, whilst roughly in the direction of the Island, doesn’t seem quite right.

Your suspicions are proved right when you see Bokin on the road in the distance, 10ft tall towards you at speed, Princess Sofia is riding on his shoulders like a child, and Ebonsong is held in her arms. Catching sight of you, Bokin lets out a bellow and comes charging forwards, Ebby shrieks and takes flight, out-distancing Bokin. Bokin is wearing his usual travelling clothing and Sofia is wearing the form-fitting outfit you saw her fencing in, though without the armour.
>>
Jal and Gendric are not too sure what to make of a charging giant, even a small one: Jal decides the best place to be is behind you and Gendric put his hands on the hilts of his swords but stands his ground.

Sofia kicks Bokin, demanding he put her down, he stops long enough for her to dismount and then they both come running up to you.

Ebby gets to you first, hitting you in the face, all claws and scaly wings, she latches on to you and starts nipping at your face. You can feel how happy she is to see you, and how scared she was that you abandoned her, seems she feels you disappearing was her fault, somehow.

You’ve just got Ebby off your face when Bokin sweeps you up into a bruising hug “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry I let you go”.

Seems like Ebby’s not the only one experiencing self-blame.

You hear Princess Sofia kicking at Bokins ankle and demanding he put you down.

As he does so, reluctantly, Sofia grabs you and hugs you tight, burying her face in your chest and bursting into tears “I found you, I found you” she sobs “I’m not leaving you I’m going with you.”

Sounds like she’s upset about something other than your unexpected disappearance.

Now that he’s let go of you, Bokin has noticed Jal and Gendric, he frowns at the half-demon and his hand goes to the hilt of his sword over his back, and he turns towards Gendric. Gendric doesn’t move but his hands tighten on the hilts of his swords.

Jal is hanging back, her wide eyes taking in the scene and says her herself “stone the crows, I’m in a jig hall.”

Lets deal with that first off. Last thing we need is problems in the party.

Btw Pally, is it possible or even recommended to do Redeeming Touch on Gendric at this point, sort of like to help him along and shit, or would it just cause problems?

Questions and Answers
Can peripherals that can be chosen multiple times only be chosen an equivalent amount of times to the number of ranks you have in their parent skill, or can you just select them over and over again infinitely?
- They are capped at number of ranks in a particular power, this is not a hard cap, but more purchases cost extra XP, see rules pastebin for more info.

Does Intense lightning have a 1/2/3 x2/x3/x4 kind of doubling, or is it x2/x4/x8?
- It stacks as x2/x3/x4, added to rules pastebin

Do skills have any kind of cap to how many times they can be taken?
- Skills cap at rank 5 under normal circumstances, added to rules pastebin

The Favored of Velya discount only appeared after we got our full suite of powers, but was this intentional or was it that the idea of discounting powers aligned to our god only occur to you later?
- The Favoured of Velya powers were always supposed to be easier to gain, I toyed with the idea of certain powers appearing under specific conditions but settled on cheaper XP costs. Partially because it might have felt like forcing powers on the players (uh oh guys, check Blessed Health power OP made us get, magical realm ahoy!) and because I didn’t want to encourage certain behaviours (we got poison immunity after being poisoned? Fuck it, let’s go headbutt some trolls to see what power we get!)

Thank you autism anon, and anyone else who makes such helpful suggestions, you're helping us all enjoy a better quest.

If I missed anything, or missed any questions asked, please let me know.

As you are now, a RT on Gendric would have no effect other than give him some closure on some of the people he's hurt.

Oh damn I like the shit out of that.

>Heavens Rebirth: When you have successfully used Redeeming Touch upon a demon or part-demon you may chose to use this power immediately afterwards, transforming them from a demon to an angel, you can only do so immediately after using Redeeming Touch, you cannot chose to use this power later. The targets demonic heritage is transformed into angelic heritage (i.e. demons become angels, half-demons become half-angels etc), who they are does not change, not does their overall focus (i.e. a warrior demon becomes a warrior angel, a succubus becomes an angel of love and pleasure etc), though their powers and appearance will certainly change. This costs 50 extra Divine Energy. These angels owe no allegiance to any particular Lord Helix, for all intents and purposes, you are their divine overlord. You have no special power to control these angels.
>Raising a large angelic host of your own may not make you popular in some parts of Heaven. Requires Redeeming Touch 3, Reform Demon, Willpower 35

I definitely think I'd like to hold off redeeming touch then until we can try and do that. Also it would be a damn awesome way of dealing with powerful demon lords

I've got to ask. Where the hell are you getting all of this lore and this system? Did you build it yourself and are you using it just for Paladin of Joy Quest or are you DMing with it elsewhere? Cus holy shit I'd love to play with this system and world in a normal players/DM situation.

You decide to step in between Bokin and Gendric, before they start fighting. Sofia seems unwilling to let you go, but you gently pry her off you.

“Boys” you say gently “calm down, Bokin, this is Gendric: Gendric, Bokin” you introduce the two to each other. They ease down a little bit, for now, but you get the feeling it’s going to take a while before they trust or like each other.

They don’t start fighting but Bokin is casting suspicious glances at Gendric, and Gendric looks ready for a fight at any moment.

You turn back to Sofia, who’s standing there looking utterly lost, wiping tears from her face occasionally.

I don't think using it on the Demon Lords is really a good idea.

>Who they are does not change

So unless the Demon Lord in question has already repented and begun to redeem himself, you'd just have a hyper-asshole Seraphim instead.

Also we can't use it yet, our hypothetical maximum willpower is 24, 34 if you count Lightning Halo's bonus.

That's assuming the Lightning Halo bonus even works for this purpose, which I doubt it does.
>>
“I’m sorry I left” you say to Sofia, opening your arms, she rushes back into a hug, clinging tightly “I didn’t plan to leave but I was in a bit of a bind.”

“I’m not going anywhere now” you say soothingly to Sofia, “I’m glad to see you too” you stroke her hair comfortingly, and wait for her to let go of you, she doesn’t.

“What’s wrong?” you ask “What happened?”

She cries harder, tears rolling down her face and trickling down your armour, gasping out her tale in-between sobs “Th-th-the day you left L-l-lord Lenda was murdered! Ninver convened the council and said, said he had a witness you’d k-killed him!”

“He tried to arrest Bokin!” she says in between sobs “And convinced the council that in this time of crisis strong leadership was needed and I had get married immediately” she pauses for a fresh flood of tears before continuing in a miserable voice “Ninver is now my husband...”

>Who they are does not change
Yes indeed Heaven's Rebirth does not change them, thats what Redeeming touch does.

>Redeeming Touch (1): You touch the target creature and flood their mind and soul with positive energy, showing them all the harm, all the pain and suffering they’ve caused others in their life. To the target this feels like a lifetime, but it only takes an instant, when it is over they know that they can make a choice: either continue down the path they are on, or try to make up for all the evil they have done. Costs 2 Divine Energy to use, every extra point of Divine Energy used increases the chance the target will repent. Demons are immune to this power.

>when it is over they know that they can make a choice: either continue down the path they are on, or try to make up for all the evil they have done.

If redeeming touch is successful then we can transform them into an angel and they'll attempt to make up for their evil ways. Otherwise it fails and we don't use Heaven's Rebirth and just smite the shit out of them.

I was also wondering about our hypothetical maximum willpower myself, as I have no idea how we'd get 35. I'd like to have Pally mention whether he planned to give us more options to increase our stats like that.
>>
>>33510955

>That bastard. Ninver set me up as well. We'll have to deal with him later.
>How did you get away? The wizard is still at your side?
>>
“How did you and Bokin get away?” you ask Sofia

“Ninver had me locked in a cell after...afterwards” sniffs Sofia “Bokin ran away from the guards and hid, I’m not sure where, later that night he came to get me and tore the wall right off the cell!”

“We ran away with the guards chasing us and ended up in the harbour” She pauses “Sireyi did you know Bokin can make ice rafts? he’s amazing.”

“Anyway Bokin pushed the ice raft all night through the waves and we got to shore and hid, then we decided to come and get you, Ebonsong was terrified” says Sofia “But I knew you were fine.” Ebonsong chirps her agreement.

“Ninver didn’t ah...consummate the marriage did he?” you ask carefully

She looks up at you and shakes her head “He tried, but I pulled his dagger off his belt and cut his face with it, I used my powers just like you taught me to.”

“We can't leave the Island of Storms in Ninver's hands, he's the one who sold me out to the demons.”

“That sounds like him” says Sofia grimly “but I’m not going back” she continues sulkily, her head still buried in your chest “I hate it there, I’m not going back, I’m going with you.”

Well it seems you have a choice, you could either take Sofia back to the Island of Storms and try to help her retake her kingdom, a difficult prospect now that Lord Ninver is now in charge.
Or you could head deeper into the Drache Empire and try to contact the rebels, using the lead Gendric has, or possibly try to contact the Rebels another way.

I'm thinking we might as well.
>Head into Drache Empire, you can always return to deal with things on the island another day.
>>
>>33511021

Our main objective hasn't changed: deal with the demon lords or puncture the barrier so that help with that can get in. I'd go find the rebels, unless there is some sort of severe damage about to happen to the island of storms - something more than "just" a power grab.
>>
[Metagame]

Lightning Halo does count for Redeeming Touch, as it is a spell-like ability or to put it another way 'it's close enough'. Yes there will be a way to boost your Willpower later on.

If you redeemed a Demon Lord (and I'll not confirm or deny if this is possible) then it's specialty (warrior, sorcerer) etc would not change is what I mean.

By virtue of Redeeming Touch + Heavens Rebirth they would now be a very powerful angel, and thus good rather than evil, but would still solve problems the same way - a former demon warrior would still use violence, a former demon sorcerer would prefer a magical solution etc.

They would not be a demon in an angels body, but they would still have some parts of their old self, the intellect if not the morality.

>Head into the Drache Empire
Dark Sister it is, then, as long as we make sure to come back and deal with Ninver after that.
Keep in mind, OP has stated several times that this quest has far more pitfalls and trap options than any other, so keep alert.
>>
Heading to the Drache Empire to meet the rebels seems to be the best option now, you’ll come back later to deal with Lord Ninver.

You ask Gendric about what contacts he has with the rebels “I don’t actually have any direct contact with them” he says apologetically, whilst Bokin and Sofia introduce themselves to Jal, with some linguistic confusion.

“Elven is a really confusing language” you hear Bokin say.

“I received a written note from Mistress Ilveyen, of the House of Flesh in the Imperial City of Arrowgate, which is in one of the inner imperial provinces. The note said she knew about the prize the priests where after and offered a sum of money if I would deliver it, er, you to her instead.”

I don't exactly want to put the princess back in power, but Ninver has to pay. We should at least RT him, and if it doesnt work, we can let Sophia beat him a duel maybe? There has to be some way to solve this, but I don't want to barge in without a plan, even if we very well could probably kill the whole council now that we're together and rested.
>>
>>33511105
We could kill the council, yeah, but what about the fact that they're defenseless and killing them would make us fall?

How was that? Not too force I hope?
>>
“In the province of Malgor” he says, “it would be about a month away, by airship.”

Airship? What’s an airship? Ships float on water, not in the air.

“What makes you think she has rebel contacts?” you move onto the next topic, airship indeed.

“The money she was offering” he replies “A Mistress of Flesh would be rich, but not that rich.”

“And what makes you think of the rebellion?” you picture a bunch of rag-tag scruffy rebels made up of farmboys and scoundrels with decent hearts.

“The rebellion started amongst the merchants” he says “A lot of the political elite are now thought to have secret rebel sympathies, they can put a lot of money behind a plan if they want to. I’m not sure if they can actually raise ‘that’ much money on short notice, but they are rich.” He pauses “and they have a reputation for reacting to events before they happen, like they have a really powerful seer on their side or something.”

“What other ways could I contact the rebels?” you ask, Gendric shrugs “Not sure” he says “They have spies all over the inner provinces, so any sort of spectacle, or you using your powers in public could draw their attention, you’d just have to hope they’d get to you before the Crimson Guard did.”

“Airship?” you say disbelievingly “you’re pulling my wing, ships float on water, not in the air.”

Gendric looks at you strangely “They don’t have those where you come from?”

“I seen a cloud ‘opper once” volunteers Jal, breaking off her conversation with Bokin and Sofia “Great big bag of fizzy gas and a boat unnerneath wi’ another on top.”

“I’ve heard of them” says Bokin, “But never seen one.”

Sofia chimes in “They are a commercial transport of goods and people, though they are quite expensive and only wealthy merchants and nobility can afford such a thing. I’m told they use a special gas that somehow pushes them upwards, enabling them to fly.”

Well, this world does have some strange things.

“What’s the crimson guard?” you ask.

“The Imperial police” says Gendric with a grimace “elite guards supported by sorcerers, and summoned demons, they have the best weapons and armour money can buy, and pride themselves on never letting criminals get away.”

“Yeah” says Jal, who seems to have permanently joined your conversation “Never cross the redshirts.”

Now seems as good a time as any "Now that I've gotten to know you all and we are all in this together I figure I should introduce myself better. I am Sireyi Valyenya, an 18 year old, half-angel Paladin of Veyla. I'm so glad I've already found such good of friends as you all."

There’s a pause and then Sofia gasps out “Valyenya?! They betrayed Hanse during the war against the Empire, they’re now one of the most honoured Houses of the Empire, tell me you don’t belong to that house Sireyi, oh please be joking!”

“I’m from another House Valyenya on another plane” you say gently “I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.”

“I hope so” says Sofia distantly.

“Where can we find an airship?” you ask Gendric.

I remember us talking about redeeming touch on evil magic items, and I'm wondering (if it works at all) what it'd do to the Infernal Collar. If it does work its possible it could suppress Demonic Energies. Thoughts on trying that?
>>
>>33511325
Weren't we going to mention that our name sounds similar to the one Gendric mentioned, and that if it might be possible that the Valenya house is with the rebels? I'd like to do that if srill possible.

We xan train with the others during the trip, and we could still decide to get the IoS business over with once there (besides, do we even have enough fooda nd water for the 5 of us?)

I know OP doesn't keep track of our financial accounts, that's why I'm wondering how much we'll be able to afford.
>>
>>33511440

His willingness in dealing with demons will probably make him seem a cooperating sovereign that is low priority for invasion.
>>
You decide a quick detour back to Ravensport would be a good idea. The trip is uneventful.

Whilst in Ravensport you take a while to gather essential supplies, food, clothing for different weather, adventuring gear, weapons for Jal and Sofia, and disguises.

You have the gold you took from the ogre king, and Jal is able to find a money-changer willing to give you a decent rate for the gold weight of you ‘foreign’ coins.

Money is not an issue, for now.

What weapons would you like to get for your two newest companions?

Light armour would probably be best for them, given their lack of sheer physical strength

Jal has no weapons training, but is eager to learn.

And for disguises, you make sure you have a variety of clothes for different occasions, but what are you going to have as a cover-story whilst spending a month on an airship in the company of other passengers?

>I’m a dragonblooded noble or merchant, Sofia and Jal are my servants, Gendric and Bokin (as an ogre) are my guards.

Only the wealthy tend to travel on the airships, after consulting with Gendric, your funds will cover the cost of the trip, though it will use about half your remaining coin.

Yes I’m time-skipping, you have a month on the road ahead, plus a month on an airship, plenty of time for things.

Because a dragonblood with half-demon servant could raise more suspicious than a half-demon with a dragonblood wife, for instance. Or to try and direct spotlight to Gendric as a party leader for casual obserers. Although I have no strong preference one way or another.

You pick out a sturdy shortsword and dagger for Jal, she’s got nimble hands, she can learn how to use 2 weapons at once.

With a little help from Sofia and Jal, you manage for find some outfits suitable for ‘Lady Victoria Sammi’, Purveyor of antiquities and arcane.
Jal sniggers every time you say your name, she helped you pick it out, why does she think it’s so funny?

Jal and Sofia seem to have no problems playing maids, though their styles are...very different.

You think Sofia should stick with her rapier for now, though you buy her a blunted longsword to start training her with.

Bokin has no objections to being a guard, Gendric explains something to you “A demon-blood who’s a guard or servant will be seen as an unacknowledged bastard, or the offspring of criminals or traitors. I’ve dealt with that my whole life, so don’t worry about me, but be prepared to face questions about it.”

You’re all in a quiet corner of an inn, eating lunch and sorting your cover stories out.

>What’s the joke, Jal?

>He's fine with being a guard, him pretending to be my husband could get embarrasing

>What's the joke, Jal? C'mon, tell me.
>What if Gendric posed as something more than a guard? How are such pairings viewed? And how likely we are to run into one of his acquaintances? Those might have trouble believing he became a mere bodyguard.
>As for excuse for keeping a guard of such reputation, we can always pretend we have motive for keeping him around, or that for whichever reason he is indebted or otherwise reliably under our control.
>>
>>33511624
>unacknowledgable bastard, offspring of criminals/traitors
That could come in handy actually, if someone wants to get rid of us they might try and bribe Gendric if they think he's a scumbag. On the other hand, I wonder if having a husband would be more desirable on an airship
but
>What's the joke, Jal?
whatever we choose.
>>
>>33511624
Definitely should get an idea from Gendric about what him posing as our husband would entail and the implications and advantages of such.
>>
“Care to share the joke Jal?” you ask

She starts sniggering again “Sammi” she giggles

“Yes?” you say

“You’re a Sammi,” she laughs and indicates Sofia “and she’s your Jill.”

None of that made sense.

A little questioning reveals the joke ‘Sam and Jill’ are an ongoing joke in rude plays. ‘Sam’ is a women pretending to be a man, and ‘Jill’ is a woman romantically interested in ‘him’.

Sam and Jill have become terms for lesbians in the dialect of the lower classes, a ‘Sam’ is a masculine woman, or one pretending to be a man, and a ‘Jill’ is a more feminine woman.

Seems Jal read a lot into Sofia hugging you, or maybe she just has that sort of a sense of humour. Either way, you might want to change your surname.

>Leave it, the upper classes won’t get the joke
>Leave it, it’s not important
>Use other non-descript name
>Use House name (Valyenya)

“Maybe you should pretend to be my husband?” you ask Gendric “I mean, demon-blood and dragon-blood couples aren’t a problem are they?”

“Not a problem, no” he replies “Officially dragon-bloods have all the rights of demon-bloods, though a few demon-bloods can be assholes about it. We’d not attract any attention for that, but I don’t know how to act in polite society.”

“Would an unaccompanied dragon-blooded lady be an issue?” you ask

“Not from most” he says “but those without much demon blood in them may try to court you, seeing you as a good match.”

>Good point, best to be a guard then
>We’ve got a month to teach you about the correct use of salad forks, that’s more than long enough.

Once that is resolved, it’s time to hit the road

Nice

The nobles won’t get the joke, so you decide not to change it.

You convince Gendric that posing as your husband is the best strategy, despite any embarrassment this may cause you. And with Jals mind being in the gutter all the time, embarrassment might not be hard to come by.

You have two weeks ahead of you on the road, plenty of time to do things. But pick 4 things to focus your time on

You already know your own strengths and weaknesses, so you focus on the others. These choices select default tactics for the party, in case you get knocked down, or are unable to give orders.

Bokin is first, as a giant he can soak up punishment, and can easily attack multiple smaller foes, he could either focus on attacking tougher foes, or target hordes of weaker enemies

>Target tough foes
>Target lots of weaker foes

Gendric is fast, able to run about three times as fast as a normal human, he has 2 flaming swords, and can use an area fire attack. He’s pretty tough as well. He could stand shoulder to shoulder with you, or maybe target specific foes.

>Front-line fighter
>Target mages/archers/other specialists

Sofia has powers giving her martial skill, as well as a magic weapon that can pierce armour and hurt demons (well, it will affect them more later), but she’s physically fragile compared to you, Bokin and Gendric.

>Keep next to one of the tougher fighters (who?)
>Target specialists
>Front-line fighter

Jal is a thief, with very few combat skills. Right now in a fight she’d likely die on her own.

>Avoid fights
>Keep next to one of the tougher fighters (who?)
>Target specialists (risky)
>Front-line fighter (risky)

Writing Gendric
>>
>>33511970
>Target lots of weaker foes
Its generally easier for us to tank big hits from tougher foes.
>Target mages/archers/other specialists
>Keep next to one of the tougher fighters (Bokin)
>Keep next to one of the tougher fighters (Bokin)

This was Sireyi and Gendric can focus on the tougher targets and specialists and leave the scrubs to Bokin and the two weaker party members, it also lets them get experience fighting without being massively dangerous. Also its not like Bokin can't just lift them out of combat in a pinch.
>>
>>33511970

Bokin is frankly pretty shit at tanking compared to Sireyi. But I guess
>focus on the Big Guys
(or just stand back and throw stuff at enemies)

Gendric is the fighting man, no questions there.

Sofia should stick with Gendric where he can protect her.

Alternately Gendric could deal with specialists while Sofia stands side by side with us, but I think Sireyi's mobility (wings, RTL, dimension door...) makes her better suited for that.

Jal should just stay out of the fights altogether imo. She's not even a sorc/ninja like Jianxi.
>>
>>33511970
>Target lots of weaker foes
Don'tray too far from the others though
>Front-line fighters
If Bokin is getting fried by specialists and we're not there to take them out, he can help out
>Keep next to one of the tougher fightees(us)
She can watch our flanks and heal/look out for surprise attacks
>Avoid fights/keep next to us if unable too risky/next to Bokin or Gendric if we're engaged and they aren't
just try to stay safe
>>
>>33512004
I prefer this option.
>>
You spend a lot of time with Gendric, finding out about his life in the circus and talking about the doctrine of Velya.

Gendric hates vampires and still has a lot of bitterness towards his old ‘family’ at the circus. He has a few issues to work out. You can’t solve all his problems at once, so which one thing do you focus on now?

>Religious teaching (gives extra XP towards protector powers, boosts loyalty)
>Let’s talk about vampires
>Let’s talk about your circus family
>Other

You spend the rest of your free time teaching Sofia and Jal how to fight. Sofia has had some good training, she just needs to move her thinking from ‘personal duels with rules’ to ‘larger combats without any rules’.

Jal has had no weapons training but she’s a fast learner.

tactics is left open for discussion for a little bit, until the quest hivemind kicks in, or I need to force a vote or roll a die to pick
>>
>>33512062
Forcing a vote would be better than a dice roll, probably.

>Circus family

>>33512034
>Keep next to one of the tougher fighters (us)
The problem with that is our battlefield mobility can be pretty extreme, I doubt anyone short of Gendric could keep within 10 ft. of us for the duration of a battle.

>Religious teaching (gives extra XP towards protector powers, boosts loyalty)

>>
>>33512092
which is why I think its best they stay next to Bokin, if Bokin is taking out the small fry. That frees us up to go where we are needed and take out the biggest of the baddies.
Having them keep with us severely restricts what we can do and thats not a good thing when we need to go all out on a target.

You are unable to contact Velya

You talk to Gendric about his time with the ‘Carnival of Death: Come See the Mysteries of the Afterlyfe!’

He has a lot of fond memories of the place the clowns were skeletons, with a wizard using a spell to throw his voice to make it seems like they talked, the performing animals were animated corpses, the strongman was a 10ft-tall...thing stitched together from dozens of corpses. ‘Gregory’ was the ringmaster, dressed in a suit and a top hat, with a skull painted on his face.

They travelled all over the empire, putting on shows in cities and towns for both rich and poor.

And some not so fond memories...the acrobats were overseen by an old vampire who liked fresh young boys to walk the high-wire...and feed his bloodlust.

“I was his plaything for years” says Gendric “And no one did anything.”

Oh...this could take a while to sort through. You try to get Gendric to talk more about it, but it seems the memories are too painful and he doesn’t want to discuss it.

Something happens on your trip....
>>
One morning you see Sofia talking to Jal, looks like she’s trying to make friends...though the two are having a few misunderstandings. They are crouched by a stream, just having washed their faces.

“Sireyi has told me that you grew up poor in Ravensport” says Sofia “That must have been dreadful”

“Nah” says Jal dismissively “I always could find clink, easy one was blessing a pull.”

“Uhm, yes, I’m sure. I’ve often spoken to my nobles about the terrible economic conditions in the Drache empire and how many of the lower classes are held in contempt by the lords and the legislature.”

“Are you calling me a blower?” asks Jal, angrily, standing up “because I never chauntered, never” she pokes a finger at Sofia angrily

“All I’m saying” continues Sofia earnestly “if that the economic policies of both the executive and legislative arms of the Drache government seem to make hurting its poorer citizens a goal of its governance, not as a side effect but as a end unto itself.”

Jal cocks her head to one side, digesting this “Are you downy? Cos I feel like I’m spreading broads here.”

You cast the spell on both of them, they chat for a few minutes, the misunderstanding resolved, though you’re not 100% sure about what they talk about.

After Sofia leaves to get ready for the days journey, Jal wanders over to you “So what was that bit o’ fizz eh?” she asks, wiggling her fingers.

“A spell that translates” you say “called ‘Tongues’”

Jal thinks about that for a moment and then asks innocently “So you’re saying, at the same time, without either of us knowing, you slipped us the Tongue?”

The rest of your trip passes uneventfully, though you do learn that Jal’s mind is constantly in the gutter, willing to make rude jokes about even the most innocent of things.

You eventually arrive at Kendleton at midday. You check the airship schedule, there’s one leaving early tomorrow going in the direction you want, though it’s not going direct – over the next month you’ll be taking 4 different airships in total.

Jal is excited and wants to look around the town for the afternoon, Sofia is tired and wants to get a room at an inn and rest. Gendric and Bokin have no preference.

>>
You and Jal spend time walking around town, looking at all the sights. It’s clear that the Empires culture is more prominent here. Humans or those with no demon- or dragon-blood are second class citizens, such ‘no-bloods’ holding the worst jobs. Dragon-bloods are in a minority but are shown the same respect and deference as the demon-blood for the most part. You see a few full demons around town, they are afforded the most respect.

You made the mistake of taking your eyes of Jal for a moment. You’re walking through the town, the crowds thick around you when you hear a masculine indignant bellow and then you hear Jal shouting at someone.

You push your way through the people to see a demon-blooded man in fine clothes with a tight grip on Jals wrist “Thief!” he cries “Pickpocket! Guards, guards arrest this thief!”

You see a couple of town guards strolling casually in his direction.

You would not have noticed me taking your purse because my touch is too light, and you are both blind and stupid. I take offense at the slight to my skills. You delight in sexual liaisons with animals, your favourite is being rectally penetrated by an angry stallion.”

The merchant honestly seems to think Jal was trying to steal from him.

Jal is telling the truth that she was just looking at his handkerchief because it was a make she'd not seen before.
Though she's stolen plenty before, from what she's told you.

The guard is sort of honest, he'll let Jal tell her side, but in the event of doubt, he'll side with the demon-blood over the 'human'.

Jal is pretending to be human at the moment because elves are almost unheard of.

If she was known to be an elf, you'd be facing constant attempts to buy her from you (all elves are slaves in Drache) ans well as kidnapping attempts (elves are a rare and sought-after commodity).
>>
Jal turns to the guard (subtitles) “I reiterate my claim not to be after his purse, I was admiring his handkerchief. I believe you are of untrustworthy character because of your employment as a city guard. Your mother sold her sexual favours to beggars for as little as five coppers; your father enjoys the consumption of pig feces; your sister is of unsurpassed ugliness; you are a homosexual who enjoys sexual liaisons with his fellow guardsmen whilst wearing a bucket over your head. Your daughter, (or daughters?), plans to celebrate her 16th birthday with a 3-day sexual marathon involving a dozen orcs, 3 donkeys, a troll, and several of your fellow guardsmen. I would advise that all of her partners in this endeavour seek professional medical help afterwards, due to the impressive collection of venereal diseases your daughter has. Your wife, whom makes disparaging remarks about your genitalia when you are not present, is known carnally to every man in the city, and most of the dogs.”

Uh oh, looks like he understood some of that: grabbing her by the collar and lifting her up on her toes Right me lad” he says, his face going a deeper shade of red than it normally is “You’re off to the cells for pick-pocketing you scrawny little no-blood!”

You decide to step in “I’m so dreadfully sorry you say” taking firm hold of Jal and pulling her away from the guardsman “he’s so terribly behaved” you say to the merchant.

"You're receiving another lashing tonight... again. I swear it's almost like you're enjoying them." You say to Jal

“If he’s taken or damage anything I would of course compensate you” you offer to the merchant.

After checking his possessions the merchant replies somewhat dubiously that nothing is missing or damaged. “As long as you keep the little sneak away from me, that’s all I need” he says.

The guardsman looks like he still wants to arrest Jal, but is unwilling to cross a dragon-blood, without a demon-blood to press charges. From his appearance the guard looks at best 1/16th demon. He lets you drag Jal away without comment.

Jal opens her mouth to give the guard a few parting shots, but a firm grip on her wrist and a slap across the mouth that looks harder than it actually is, keeps her quiet.

You both go back to the inn, that’s enough excitement for one day. Jal looks a bit shamefaced the next morning as you prepare to board the airship.
>>
>>33512856

No need to be so draconian.
>>
>>33512905
So I take it we didn't find anything interesting in town, then?
>>
>>33513026
nope.

The next morning you all board the airship, along with other wealthy and/or noble individuals. The airship is a vast, gas-filled balloon with a huge wooden structure hanging beneath it, inside a long chute leads up inside the gas bag to a smaller structure, used by the crew.

This vessel carries about 30 crew, and 100 passengers, a quarter of whom are nobles or wealthy merchants, the rest are servants.

As an ogre, Bokin is expected to stay below decks most of the time so as not to bother the guests or crew, he doesn’t seem to mind, and given his size, it seems unlikely anyone will bother him.

As humans (or at least, pretending to be) Jal and Sofia are expected to be seen and not heard, though as your personal servants, it would be an affront for anyone else to give them an order, or to punish them. Servants are normally given the run of the ship, except for crew-only areas, though letting the girls go of alone might not be a good idea.

You spend some time in the company of your fellow nobles, making small talk. Your cover story seems to hold up. As the only dragon-blood on the voyage you elicit a little curiosity but not much.

Mostly you receive complements from the other women for such a fine catch of a husband, as they seem to think you’ve married above your station.

Having a dragon familiar also seems to kick up your social status, especially when you are asked about how you received one and you give a non-specific answer to the effect that the hatchlings relative trusted you enough to care for her. It seems true dragons are worthy of a great deal of respect in the Empire.

During dinner, Gendric proves he’s learned his etiquette lessons well and manages to comport himself without too much embarrassment.

Your maids are amongst the younger maids on the voyage, and are probably the most attractive. Something not lost on some of the crew members.

Judging by some of the looks and muttered comments, none of the younger maids should be going anywhere on the airship alone.

You make sure that Jal and Sofia are aware of the danger. Jal takes it far more seriously, Sofia seems a bit disbelieving. You impress upon them the importance of staying together.

Bokin will be staying below, though you make a mental note to visit him from time to time.

Thank you for spotting

That evening you retire to your cabin. It’s split into two rooms. The main room is large enough to have a small table and chairs, and also holds the master bed, a big four-poster thing.

The smaller room is for servants and the bed is barely wide enough for one person, let alone two people.

It’s late and you realise that you haven’t discussed sleeping arrangements with Gendric yet. Jal and Sofia are getting dressed for bed and Jal is warning Sofia that if she starts snoring, she’ll get smothered with a pillow.

Gendric pulls a spare blanket from a box and lays it over one of the chairs.

>Good idea Gendric, you sleep in the chair, I’ll take the bed
>I’ll take the chair Gendric, you can have the bed.
>Us girls can all fit on the master bed, Gendric can have the servants room.

character sheet should be updated now, thanks for spotting.

“If someone comes in ‘husband’ it will look very strange if we’re not sharing a bed, look I’ll even put a pillow between us to preserve your virtue, ok?” you say to Gendric in a bantering tone.

He chuckles “Whatever you say ‘wife’.”

As the two of you lay there trying to get some rest you hear a brief but intense argument between Sofia and Jal over how much room Jal is taking up on the bed, and the likelihood of Sofia falling out of the bed in the middle of the night.

“Fine, fine” says Jal, giving in, “cuddle up all ya want, but keep yet hands to yerself Jill”

Sofia’s long groan of frustration is muffled by something, probably a pillow.

Whilst you’re on this month-long trip, weapons training probably isn’t a good idea, but you’ll have plenty of time to chat with your companions. This happens over the course of the whole month.

The first leg of your journey, a quick 4 day jaunt to the coast, passes without incident. The next part of your trip is a 10-day trip over the ocean, to the continent where the heart of the empire lies.

You spend a lot of time with Jal, getting to know her better. You ask her about herself but she’s tough to pin down, preferring to joke, or talk about someone else.

You talk to her regularly whilst trying to get her to use an understandable form of common.

Eventually you manage to get her to discuss something with you seriously (pick 1)

“Tell me about your past” you say. As you know Jal was raised by a gang of child thieves and an old man who taught them how to steal.

She lived her entire life in Ravensport until the day you met her, and finds life outside it quite scary. She’s quickly latched onto your small party as her new gang.

What can she say about growing up on the streets? She’s seen friends die, she’s seen horrible things done to people that don’t deserve it. To her, law and government mean brutality and oppression.

She recalls a story about a free shelter run by a charitable wealthy merchant. Initially suspicious, her gang avoided it, but once it seemed to be safe they spent the odd night there, when they couldn’t find other places to sleep.

One night, they went to visit it and it was closed, asking around they found that the merchant had build a magical circle under the shelter and, one night when there was enough occupants, summoned a powerful demon and used everyone in the shelter as a bargaining chip to gain power from it. Everyone sleeping there that night was either dead or in Hell.

“Some will down yer as soon as they can” she finishes “Other’s wait as long as it takes to get ya into their clutches, trust nobody”.

Seems she has a rather bleak view of the world. Roll Fellowship 1d20+3

3 days into your 10-day voyage, something happens.

You and Gendric return to your room late one night, an elderly demon couple invited you to play cards and kept protesting when you tried to leave, saying that none of the others would play with them.

After a while you understood why, they cheat a lot. Fortunately, between the two of you, you managed to hold onto your money and even won some from your card-sharp foes, thanks to your exceptionally sharp vision. They really shouldn’t play cards near reflective surfaces.

The door to the servants room is closed, and quiet, looks like the girls had an early night.

You’re woken up by a knock at the door a couple of hours later, upon answering it, you discover it’s one of the crew. He apologises for waking you and says the duty officer asks that you come to the bridge. He closes the door to let you get dressed.

Crewmen are part-demons, but not very pure-blooded ones.

You send Gendric to check on Sofia, he kneels down next to her and holds her head, talking softly to her.

“Unhand my servant!” you command “And explain yourselves, you” you point to Jal “what have you done now?”

As Jal opens her mouth to explain the duty officer interrupts “Regrettably ma’am, your servant attacked one of my crew without provocation, badly injuring him.”

“I’m afraid your servant will need to be whipped, and you will need to pay a large fine”

As you consider your response, Gendric returns and whispers in your ear that Sofia was given a drink spiked with a lot of alcohol, and what smells to him like a drug used to induce short-term memory-loss.

You focus your senses, most of the crew here are evil, the duty officer and the ‘wounded’ crewman radiate slightly stronger evil.

You decide against using Arcane Sight

You ask Jal for her side of the story, after casting a tongues spell on her, and the officer, though he seems suspicious of what you’re doing.

You decide that using healing magic here is not a good idea.

Jals story is that she and Sofia were invited to a party by some of the crew, with some of the other servants invited as well, Jal didn’t want to go, but Sofia insisted.
Jal kept an eye on Sofia, who had only had two drinks when she seemed to become completely intoxicated. Jal only took her eye off Sofia for a moment and then saw her being led away by the crewman, to a crew-only area.

Jal chased after, and tried to pull Sofia away from the crewman, who threatened her, so she sliced him with her knife.

Sofia is unable to confirm or deny this, as she’s too busy dry heaving, and doesn’t seem to understand questions.

The crewman claims he was taking Sofia back to her cabin so she could sleep it off.

“I want to see the captain” you say to the duty officer.

“The captain won’t be happy to be woken up.” He replies

OP said it was a 'ping' of angelic energy radiating outwards from us.
I'd guess about 10 yards or so, more if we pump more energy into an ability.
There's likely at least *someone* on the ship amongst the passengers that can tell.

Pretty sure using any kind of paladin or angel ability on the ship is a trap option.

Jal is telling the truth
Crewman is lying

The captain won’t be happy at being woken and will undoubtedly punish the crewman, but is likely to try and punish you as well

Jal pulls free of the crew holding her, Gendric collects Sofia, and nobody stops you when you leave.

And get Jal to inform us when Sofia wakes up in the morning if we're not asleep. I think we might want to confine the both of them to quarters to the next few days as a guise of punishment. Remember people, we have to appear like we punished them as that is the normal thing around here.
>>

Also, from now on they stay with us or Gendric, only going to places we know about.
At least until we leave the ship we're currently on.

You decide to let Sofia sleep it off normally, she wakes up the next morning with a hangover and no memory of the previous nights events. She and Jal decide to stay closer to you from now on.

The next 3 days pass uneventfully. None of the crew seem to want to meet your eye and any request you make is met with indecent haste. One of the other passengers asks you how much the extra service cost you.

You’re standing at the ships railing, looking out over the water, there’s storm clouds in the distance.

“Looks like we might be having weather” says one of the other passengers standing nearby. He’s wrong, the storm is definitely coming your way, no maybe about it.

You keep watching as it approaches, even when it starts to rain, you don’t mind the storm, it feels comforting to you. Everyone else has gone inside.

You tell your allies and get Bokin, you all quietly ready yourselves for battle but don’t tip the crew off.

Eventually the crew see the pirate ship themselves. The captain gives the orders over the tannoy

“Attention all crew, battle stations!”

“Attention all passengers, we have spotted a pirate ship. It appears to have a functioning Lightning Core. We will not be able to outrun it, and it is unlikely that we can outfight the stormwings.
I advise you return to your cabins and hide what valuables you can. I remind you that stormwing harnesses often allow the wearer to detect magic, so please do not rely upon concealment spells alone.”
