Kiki-hime looks confused, while Akari makes tea, and Er Yin gently checks to make sure her diminutive lover is all right and that her bandages are fine. It is interesting to see how Miko-Kiku tolerates the care and the gentle touch that Er Yin uses to check the bandages. Yui sits quietly at the table, quiet and calm, though there's an edge of worry around her which you suspect has to do with the impending contest with her uncle.

“Well, first, I can't make any calls or receive any calls, which is kind of important since Jinyuu-onee-sama appears to have been taken hostage.” Miko-Kiku's hair immediately explodes and Er Yin jerks her hands away from her examination, while Akari makes a soft “tch” sound from the kitchen. Kiki-hime looks worried, but calms down immediately as you stroke her horns. “Second, they might send another spirit here and I'd rather not have another fight with a youkai right now.” You're good, but that still took a lot out of you.

“So what're we gonna do, aniki?” Yui asks, her glowing eyes bright and worried.

“Well....”

While your primary objective is still to protect Kumatori Kiki – she has the most people after her still – truth be told everyone is now in danger. Miko-Kiku betrayed Oba-san, you Betrayed Oba-san, Er Yin is wanted by Oba-san and by the Kaga Clan, and Yui is pretty much collateral damage waiting to happen, because her uncle will be by to beat the crap out of you in a couple of days, making her the least endangered of all – except of course if you lose.

“....why are you laughing like that, Aniki?” Akari asks, and you struggle to contain your giggles.

Er Yin guides Kiki-hime through the barrier lowering, and to your vast relief your skin becomes normal. Your newly reattached left arm is mostly normal, save your fingers are made from smooth, dark-blue-almost-black sapphire, merging at your knuckles and then changing into normal flesh half-way into your palm and an inch or so into the back of your hand. Otherwise your arm looks normal flesh and blood. They flesh and move and have sensation equal toy your flesh and blood hand, but you can sense that the muscle and bone up past your elbow is anything but normal flesh and bone.

You could probably wear a glove and no one would be the wiser.

Akari hands you tea, and the first sip makes your stomach clench hard. Yeah, food is first. You've burned up a ton of energy and you need to eat. “Right, I'm going to make lunch. Anyone have any suggestions on where we can move to that isn't a Clan Ryo holding and isn't a Hojo Group holding?”

You hop up and wander into the kitchen, and open up a half dozen cupboards and the fridge and the freezer, taking a good look around.

“I have a few places, aniki, but they're not well protected,” Akari claims. “I have three, but they're small, not meant for a group this large at all.” You sweep several packages of noodles together and throw some water on to boil, which happens much faster than it should, because, well, Water dragonette.

Kiki pipes up softly, “Well....if we have the money, wouldn't a hotel be acceptable? There are some that have suites, and they can be trusted to be quiet is they are paid enough.” You nod as you slice the tako into perfect pieces with your claws and your claws – they're just as sharp, and maybe a little stronger, but nothing you're not going to be able to use perfectly.

“I am afraid I am of little help. My information is rather out of date,” the perfect cadence of Er Yin drifts over as you pour rice into an industrial sized steamer and set it to 'nicely sticky.'

“Please forgive this useless oni, aniki!” You toss a bean onto the kotatsu, and she squeaks in terror; you spill the rest of the already softened beans into the egg drop soup.

“None of that now – you are just as out of your element as Er Yin! You're not useless, and if you say it again, you'll really get beans!”

“HAI, ANIKI!” Yui salutes you and looks totally gun-ho until Akari pokes her in the side and makes her giggle and squirm. They are so good together, those two. Though, you might find out how good later....food! Rioght, food. Um....hmn. Pickled radishes! Yes.

“Well....there is Hinata-hakase's.” Miko-Kiku's soft voice is a little uncertain. To her credit – which makes you glance back to make sure she's okay, Kiki-hime actually says nothing, only looks worried.

But they'd SEE....shit. It doesn't matter. You have to make the ultimate sacrifice. It's going to be awful but it's safer, and more importantly, you made damn sure not even Jinyuu-onee-sama, not even AKARI knew about this place. Because....well, it was private. But not anymore. You're just going to have to suck it up.

“I've made a decision – but it's not any of those places.” The others look at each other as you set up the plates and place a large jar of sake next to yours, because damn, you're going to need it.

Maybe our resident destruction god knows a place to hang out? I bet nobody would look there.

Still, there is one other serious matter to consider, and as you start laying out the table, you bring it up. “In addition, I am going to have to go to Jinyuu-onee-sama's workplace, and see exactly what happened. And there's no way we can all go, so I'm going to have to take someone with me, and the rest are going to the safehouse.” You set the places and note that once again, Er Yin and Kiku are on two sides, forcing you and Kiku to one side and Yui and Akari are connected at the hip anyways. You really should bring out the full size table...but this is so much more cozy. “Kiki-hime's still got the most people after her and the least training, so she's still the principle as far as that sort of thing goes, though.”

The way Er Yin's tail slowly slides around in the air behind her is almost an accusation of deceit, that is. Miko-Kiku doesn't look convinced, but Yui looks perfectly fine with it. Akari's too good to let anything slip, but she probably knows better than anyone how much that just isn't true anymore.

You lay out the plates and everyone is staring at the food, except Akari, who is placing the dumplings and pork buns on her plate with the ladle as though you made lunch every day.

“....how....how do you DO that, aniki?!” Yui is staring at the delicious sukiyaki tako, the egg noodles, the egg drop soup with beans (except hers, you're not that mean), the rice with pickled radishes, the pork bow buns, and the vegetable dumpling with hot-savory dipping sauce.

:”Do what?”

“....baka dragon,” comments Miko-Kiku as she starts filling Er Yin's plate and bowl for her.

Kiki-hime is looking somewhat stunned as well. “I think she means make....this much beautiful food so quickly.”

“What?” You look at the clock, and sigh, your tail drooping. Five minutes. Five, freakin' minutes. “....gomen.”

You settle down to the chorus of itadakimasu, and drain about a third of the sake jar. “Well, be that as it may....Kiki-hime, Yui and Akari and Miko-Kiku are your bodyguards again.” Miko-Kiku looks down. “You were surprised, but everyone else was too, including the psychics. Anyways, they won't do anything so quickly. Not to mention, where I am sending you no one will find you. Not even Akari—niji-chan knows about this place.” Kiku seems heartened by the vote of confidence, even after her injury, and Er Yin doesn't protest, nor does Yui, who knows her injuries well enough to let you know if they were too serious.

“Er Yin-sensei, you are going to have to come with me. You might be able to sense things I won't notice....Jinyuu-onee-sama isn't exactly helpless, so I am betting they did something weird.” You munch on a pork bun, the stroke rice wine not really hitting you at all, sadly.

Er Yin inclines her head. “I am honored by your trust in me, Ryukusa-san.” Miko-Kiku smiles faintly and mouths a 'thank you' behind the bowl of soup she is about to start in on. You give her the flicker of a smile – and then Kiki-hime is feeding you a dumpling.

“You have to eat Ryu-chan, especially if you are going to drink that much.: She offers another dumpling on her chopsticks, looking very serious.

….that might be more than you bargained for.

Especially when Yui-chan turns to Akari and opens her mouth, her eyes closed, her tail twitching ineffectually. Akari blinks several times, and then, somewhat bewildered, offer Yui a dumpling. Yui slips her tongue out and slowly slides it along the dumpling before closing her lips over it and the chopsticks, which she slides her lips from very slowly.

You're not sure which is more fascinating, the way Akari's cheeks are slowly turning more red than the tassels on Kiku's dress, or that everyone ELSE finds it equally fascinating save Er Yin.

Needless to say, after lunch, which turns into a sort of confused, slightly embarrassing, everyone feeding everyone else situation, which is all fun and games....until they all offer you something at the same time.

They're all smiling, they're all looking at you – with the obvious exception of Er Yin, who seems to have a silent rapport with Miko-Kiku as strong as yours is with Akari-niji-chan – and it's very obvious that they planned it at some point.

Solemnly you close your eyes, remembering with perfect clarity where each and every delectable offering is, and pick up your chopsticks. You do take a quick glance through one eye to make sure they haven't moved their offerings too much, and are quite gratified to see that they are looking at one another in confusion.

You open your eyes and give a sharp cry, as you take Er Yin's rice and pickle and tap it up, sending it towards the ceiling! With deft speed you steal Kiku's noodles, and whip them around, capturing Akari's piece of pork bun with the whirling noodles! Spearing Yui's dumpling, you sweep down and catch the falling rice and pickle, only to take with it the delectable tako slice from Kiki's chopsticks, sweeping the whole stack into your mouth in a roller-coster of maneuvers!

You chew solemnly, and the entire table breaks into soft applause and laughter, though Akari looks smug.

“It is true, Ryu-chan cannot be beaten!” admits Kiki-hime. You grin at her as you struggle to swallow way too much food at the same time, and immediately go into a coughing fit which you drown with sake.

After lunch, you take Akari aside, and give her the exacting, difficult directions to your lair. When you reveal how it's reached, she actually seems impressed, and you entrust her with the only key. “Just....” You take a deep breath. “Just remember, it's only because there isn't any safer place right now.” Oh, this is going to suck so bad. They're going to be so disgusted with you.

“Okay.”

You can't even bring yourself to poke fun at her about it, your stomach is so tied up in knots.

With nothing else for it you take a deep breath, and craft a barrier that extends to just beyond the sidewalk on the other side of the road. It's quite a bit larger than what you usually craft, but it doesn't feel any more difficult to do so. Still, you send the others on their way, and decide that you should actually get dressed, now that you remember your in gym shorts and have a sash tied around your boobs.

“Well, it's just you and me, Er Yin. I need to get changed, you're welcome to come with.”

“I am going to take down the shrine, Ryukusa-san. I will join you after it is done.” You nod, and go to face the REALLY difficult decision....

While Er Yin-sensei may be blind, she has a distinctive and elegant style, but this is to solve a mystery and she's your beautiful sidekick. She's also Chinese, which would make things difficult....but she is wearing white silk with embroidered with silver longevity symbols and butterflies....Obviously you should be totally contrasting, but this is her first outing in a hundred years. So, it must be a date!

You pull out a pair of sleek black tux pants pressed perfectly, a very plain black belt (silver buckle of course), and a pure white dress shirt. Silk, with snaps though, instead of buttons. A very nicely tailored silk jacket, and smart black spats, of course! And a very lovely fedora, black crushed felt with a nice, white silk band – brim down in front, up in back, and with a nice diamond crease. Oh, and a silver trimmed white silk ribbon to tie your hair back, naturally. Slightly messy, just barely holding a lock in.

And cool black leather driving gloves with thew wrist strap. Yep, covers your hand perfectly.

You walk back out, and take off your hat, and blink, because Er Yin-sensei has also changed slightly. She is still wearing pure white silk, but she has exchanged her qipao for a longer cheongsam, with blue and silver embroidered bats and dragonflies. Her hair is elegantly combed back and set in place with black jade sticks that have silver chains with tiny bells on them (sans clapper, thank kami), and she has silver hoop earrings as well. She is wearing white slippers with black and silver trim and she bows to you slowly.

“Please take care of me, Ryuu Ryukusa. I wish for nothing more than to serve you and love my Precious Gem, however you require of me. “

Well. Even if she has a strong fashion sense – which is really odd for a blind girl, but perhaps not quite so odd for a Void dragonette – she is still who she is. And who she is is a lover concerned for her Precious Treasure and who wishes nothing more than to be part of the family she used to be part of long ago.

Stepping forward lightly, purposefully making a soft noise so she is aware you are moving, you reach out and gently take her hand. She allows you to, and you can feel the faintest of tremors; not fear, not fear of you, but the fear of hope. It's in her dead eyes and her careful poise. “Er Yin-chan....I have told you, that it is nothing less than who and what I am. With all my heart, I will protect your Precious Treasure, and keep you at my side.” You kiss her hand softly, the black jade of the her ring warm under your lips. She shivers ever so slightly.

“While it is a terrible poor first date, Er Yin-chan, one day we will have another outing, perhaps even with your Hougyoku-chan to accompany us.” The idea of the three of you, on a real date....it sparks a hot desire in you, to be able to do so for each of your loved ones: mother, father, child. “It would be ungracious of me to do anything less, considering what you have given me.”

You take a deep breath, the words sending a shiver down your spine; taking her hand, you walk your Seer to the door, and from there, to the edge of the Barrier, in silence.

Once out of the Barrier, it does not take long for you to find a taxi, and have them take you to the Offices of Professional Fortunate Teller Ryuu Jinyuu. Er Yin-sensei tells you about some of the historical sights of Tokyo, and it would be to visit some of them now. You tell her of the changes that have happened, how the Great Kanto Quake made Tokyo rebuild and yet hold fast to many of its great monuments.

All in all, the driver is totally bored by the young lovers, and finds you utterly forgettable, just as planned.

The offices are in fact closed, but that doesn't mean all that much to you. A quick look to make sure that no one is paying special attention, and you prepare to do nefarious and secretive things.

I'm not really great with magic, in case you hadn't noticed.” You open your own Water Eyes, and another slow glance around and above indicates nothing out of the ordinary. You suspect they will tell you much more inside.

“Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado has never been truly concerned with subtle powers, Ryukusa-sama. The subtleties of the heart are another matter, one which you have made abundantly clear you hold a firm grasp of.” She closes her eyes, and when they open, the dark pits of her pupils burn with white fire. “There is a seal upon the door, one which is meant only to alert the maker of the seal that it has been opened. The artistry and style of the ofuda is that of a scholar. It is an elegant brush held in a steady hand, and not made by pure magic or by the might of a spirit-child's will.”

Most likely not the half-demon Taisho Ryoga then, or one of Oba-san's people or a Kaga sorcerer from Hojo Group. Yet it doesn't sound like Kushinada's style either.

You look at the door more carefully. No signs of breaking an entering, and there is no indicator that there is any sort of trap mechanism, though it is locked. Stepping back, you slide your arm into Er Yin's and she immediately claps your arm with her other hand, two lovers on a date, nothing more. Apparently they teach scholar-warriors all sorts of interesting things in China.

“Let's not keep her waiting, Er Yin-chan.” You take the door handle carefully and press your thumb over the keyhole. Just enough water pressure, and not too much or too little, to push the tumblers just so, to the easiest place for them to be moved too. A twist of the thumb and the lock is undone, and you step inside – ready to take the brunt of any assault.

As the door closes behind you, you re-lock it, noting the ofuda Er Yin mentioned plastered on the inside of the door. It looks almost exactly the same as the one that burned up when you ended the spell on the mukade youkai. Slightly different scribble, but otherwise same style, and if there is one thing you do know, it is style. You look around the room, taking it all in, your arm still held in Er Yin's arms.

The lack of destruction, blood, and mayhem is very telling. The hum of the computer, the whine of the electronic screen, and the slight disarray of the desk are all good indicators that Jinyuu-onee-sama's secretary was interrupted, but not killed or even injured. Er Yin mentions that there is a faint magical presence, something not associated with the normal feng shui of this place – a slow breeze of chi moving from the back room into this one.

Seeing nothing immediately dangerous, you lead her to the desk. As you suspected, your water eyes show you the tidy but still being worked at papers and pens, notations being made that were not finished. Interruption, and a little fear, the tremor of ink at the trailing of a kanji. As you feared, they used the helpless secretary, dragonette that she was, to control Jinyuu-onee-sama. Not entirely Kushinada's style again. It had to be a spirit-child, to invoke such fear in a dragonette.

You close your eyes – not your Water Eyes, but your eyes – and feel for the chi for yourself. It's faint, very faint, barely registering from your feng shui, and not because of the door being closed. A tiny trickle, hardly more than would be caused by white marble in a field of polished white pebbles. Nevertheless, the fact that it exists at all in the place of your sister's work makes it scream for attention.

“Er Yin-sensei....if you have any thoughts or concerns, or even a hint, please do not keep it to yourself, for any reason at all. This is the kind of situation where that sort of thing can be very dangerous.” You slowly guide her towards the office, where you met Jinyuu-onee-sama last time you were here. You take special care to keep yourself and her out of the line of the odd chi flow.

“I understand, Ryukusa-sama. But, there is another seal, on the floor in the room to our left.” That would also be the back office, since you are both rather hugging the wall at the moment. “It contains a moment of time.” Pausing, you ask for an explanation. “It would be....what you could call an illusion, a sort of, ghost play. A re-enactment of something which has happened before.”

“I think I understand.” you slowly move to the door, and touch it gently. Your connection to the wood is tenuous, through your Water element, but you can sense there is nothing connected to it that would be dangerous. Your Water Eyes see nothing unusual either.

Thanks to Er Yin's warning, you have no fear of the power of the ofuda, so it burns and the chi flow is caught by the apparition that forms above the ofuda, giving it strength. Your first reaction is to glare at the ghostly figure that resembles Kushinada....but you quickly realize it is not Kushinada. Not because of the slight differences in armor and armaments, but because her expression is calm, knowing, and faintly dangerous.

This is an intelligent, dangerous person, who has been classically trained and above and beyond that, studies much on her own. A demigod, definitely, but unlike Kushinada, one who knows how to use what she bears and understands her place in the world. This is the clever, charismatic, dangerous sort of person who could make or breath those above her. And you can guess her name before she says it, even as you allow your Water Eyes to close.

The chi dissipates, and with it the specter, the last remnant of the paper charm disintegrating.

“I can sense no further magics or strangeness, Ryukusa-sama.” Er Yin blinks slowly, and the white fire fades from her eyes.

“You did more than enough, Er Yin-sensei, thank you.”

Her smile is gratifying. “Don't mention it at all, please.”

The message scratched into the windowsill is a message for you, obviously, a simple pictograph code that you, Akari, Jinyuu, and a few select, trustworthy others know of. The pictograph is of a sunset with two dogs on a mountainside, barking at the setting sun. Meaningless, unless you knew the bedtime story Jinyuu-onee-sama told you when you and Akari were children. Two dogs chased the sun at their master's behest, but it fled across the entire sky, until they could chase it no more – they remained on the mountain, barking until the night fell, helpless to do anything else since they had been told to chase the sun. Blindly obeying an uncaring master who remained at home, eating good food and drinking good wine while his loyal dogs suffered in his place.

That brings a smile on your face. “That would be nice, yes. I dunno about the Kamuy thing, but being left in peace....I'd like to take care of my family. But I think the only way they will let me is if I take care of all of them first.”

I can usually pre-write certain amounts of things if I have a fair idea of anon's drift. But when I have to give out a set of entirely open choices like at the beginning, I can't prewrite musch at all. while the basic situatiosn would have been the same, anon could have picked any dragon (or even no dragon) to accompany them, or anon could have chosen any safehouse at all.
