Sorry about the delay, weather was shit on the drive home, so I stopped at work and hung out for a little bit to wait for it to slacken off, and then I had to help cook.

Slouched in a hammock, flipping through a pocket copy of the bible that your grandfather took with him to Normandy, you wonder why people still go to church after Second Impact. Same reason you did, probably. It's expected or they've got issues they're trying to work through and they think the priest can help. He didn't really help, in your case. Just a “God works in mysterious ways, my son,” and an “How have you been handling the stress?”

Same way you always handle stress, with a bottle and a smoke, padre. The hammock is in a good position, a little down the hall outside Mari's room from an air conditioning vent, and you've got the AK-74 Johann brought you propped against the wall. No one that's walked past in the last two and a half days has actually stopped to ask who you were, but they know what you're there for- Mari's security.

Slipping your grandfather's Bible back into your breast pocket, you pull out your phone and check your mail. Nothing new. Smith managed to falsify those orders like you wanted him to, and now all he's doing is waiting to either reinforce your defense of Mari or send those orders. Mari is listening to some kind of British pop, which you never cared for, and trawling the web or something on her laptop, waiting for something interesting to happen, since she'd finished her synch tests for the day.

Your phone buzzes in your hand, and you look at it. It's a text from an unknown number. “Level 5 Charlie, Room B405.”

Well that's certainly interesting.

[]Send Smith to check it out.

You. I like you.

It's probably some kind of clever trap. That said, the thing about knowing something was a trap is that you can spring it early and fuck everything up, or let it go off as planned and still fuck everything up. Either way, you'll be fucking something for someone up. Shooting a text to Smith to come spot your guard of Mari, he responds in the affirmative, and you drop out of the hammock.

Stepping into Mari's room, the pop she's blasting assaults your ears more directly, and you can almost feel your tinnitus getting worse. Tapping her on the shoulder, she shuts off the music and leans back in the chair, to look up at you from behind her glasses.

“I've got some investigating to do. Anything you need before I go?”

“How about a beer,” she asks hopefully. You shake your head.

“Ask Smith, but I'm not gonna contribute to the delinquency of a minor.” She pokes a lower lip out, and you turn and exit the room. You're not gonna deal with that kind of teenage girl bullshit, you're not paid for it. Smith shows up within the next ten minutes, and looks at you inquisitively.

“I've got to go walk into an ambush. Watch out for Mari, for me. Her safety's your first priority, etc, etc, we both know the spiel.”

“Roger, sir. Have fun, try not to die.” Fun? You exist in a state of fun! Fun is your middle name! (Not really, it's something highly embarrassing.)

If something does go wrong in this ambush-busting, you could very well die. To that end, placing a diversion for whoever killed you to discover might be a good idea.

Basically I'm free to do whatever as long as I help with the car insurance and buy my own gas and pay for the car's upkeep.

My suggestion about the money thing is don't spend it all on alcohol and carry out pizza. Try to find a work-study job, to at least put a little back. As for the out of your depth thing, I was too- talk to an academic adviser if it happens. They're there to help you.

Haha, who knew trying to Google “sabotaging a plane” would take so long?

>Cargo-planes.

The walk to the base's air strip is brief, and you emerge into the beating sun with a grimace. There's a string of C-130s along one end, and some of them are being loaded and unloaded with various crates of things. You don't think it's food, since that's brought in by truck, but it's possibly ammunition or something similar being unloaded. As for whatever is going on the planes, you have no clue and the faintest idea.

Casually strolling to the first plane being unloaded, you kick one tire, check the other, and examine the hydraulics. Something smells vaguely reminiscent of chocolate chip cookies, and you don't think it's the hydraulic fluid. Ignoring the scent, for now, you think. Sabotaging the planes would only put people just doing their jobs at risk. What can you do that would be good enough to distract people?

There's big tanks of aviation fuel underneath the ground, across the tarmac, and they've got a big fuel truck sitting on top of them. That'll work. Meandering your way over there in as nonthreatening a fashion as possible, you regretfully slip off your watch. A tasteful analog model, it'll serve as a basic countdown clock for the primitive bomb you'll be making.
>>
Slipping behind the truck, you take a seat behind one of the fat wheels and pull out a spare Kalashnikov magazine. Removing three bullets, you slip it into the 'possibles' pouch on the chest rig you're wearing, where you keep half-empty and empty magazines. Opening up the little disposable phone all Section Two Agents are supposed to keep on them in case things go tits up and their main phone is dead or something, you pull out the battery and begin fiddling with wires, you watch, and the bullets.

Twenty minutes later, you have a respectable improvised explosive device created from three 5.45 bullets, a shitty cellphone, and your watch. With a sigh, you climb the ladder on the back of the truck's tank, open up a valve, and attach the IED to the side of the hole with some duct tape you found in the truck's cab. That done, you leave the airstrip and head for the level mentioned in the text. The stroll through the base is mercifully brief, as there's a handy map someone posted.

>Distraction elevator

You're clever. Being intelligent is one of the most basic requirements for getting through Selection. So you press the down button for the elevator, and it begins descending. Turning towards the stairs, you too, begin descending. You shoot a text to Smith, telling him to get off base and as far away as possible with Mari if he hasn't heard from you in four hours, as you set your IED for five. Slipping the phone back into your pocket, you bring up the Kalashnikov and begin moving down the stairs.

You slip in a rock and almost roll your ankle, but your boots are sturdy enough to save you from such a horrid fate, and you kick it off the stairwell and down to the next flat platform, where there's a door. It's not your door, so you keep going down. When you do make it to the level you need, you ease the door open, sending your rifle's barrel in through first, and sweep the hall. It's empty, and the light is dim. Following it, you're not instantly riddled with bullets, so that's a good thing. You can't hear anything except the sound of the ventilation system, so you decide it's safe enough, for now, and let your rifle drop.

That's when the bullet takes you in the back, low, near a kidney, and you're spun around in time to glimpse a man holding a pistol, before you feel another impact in your stomach, near your navel, and you go down, hard.

(1/2)
>>
You're calm, though. You've been hit before. Nowhere vital that you can feel, right now, and you've got enough time to shoot this man. So from your back, you lift your rifle and put a burst through his chest, and he goes down, hard. Rolling, you push yourself into a crouch and check the corridor on either side of you. He must have been waiting by the elevator, just past the door to the stairs you came through.

Coughing, slightly, you don't taste any blood come up. That's good. Unless you're bleeding into your guts, which would be bad. The corridor's clear, aside from you and the man, a blond in his mid-twenties. He's wearing the coveralls common to all mechanics, and the pistol he was using was a common one in America, an M1911 clone. Ears ringing from the tinnitus, you shake your head to clear them, and you almost are able to hear someone humming Orinoco Flow, which you've hated since you were twelve.

Protip, in portraying Rei, she's not simply a standard clone.

That's just a regular human y'know. Rei's pretty much all alien, with all the human looks.

The idea is that if you tell her the right things and convince her of it at the same time, she'll be overpowered and possibly unstable.
>>
>>33480846
Well, she displays pretty human emotions from time to time. Though, I think the only time she displayed any powers was when she was Rei 3.
>>
>Police the body and check your hits

Forcing yourself to a stand, you make your way to the body, and kick the pistol from his hand. Kneeling, you ignore the pain in your gut and back to force the man over and take his wallet from him. Checking the hallway again, you dash back to the stairwell, where you take a seat and prop the rifle against the wall. Ripping off your shirt, you look at the hole in your stomach.

There's only a slow trickle of blood.

What.

Running a hand behind your back, you check the injury over your kidney- the same.

What.

You'd given Mari your Kevlar permanently and had been meaning to check out another vest from the base's armory, but never got around to it. On a hunch, you stick your pinky finger into the wound. It bounces off of something hard and metallic.

Oh. They put some kind of armor in you while you were out for those two weeks. “Ha,” you chuckle weakly. Probably they replaced your liver with a cloned or pig liver, and then installed this armor. Medical magazines you'd read had had articles about pig organs being able to replace human organs, or using pigs as tubes to grow human organs, and some had talked about protein bonded metal replacing joints like knees or elbows but you'd never expected NERV to be involved in probably highly illegal medical research.

“Ha,” you chuckle again, and stand back up. A look at the man's ID reveals a legit NERV ID card that checks out. He was Percival Robards, aged twenty-four. He was an Evangelion maintenance technician. Roughly translated, he took armor off and put armor on the giant robot, after a fight, or before a test or after a test. Well, tough luck for Percy there, but your new armor was handy.

(1/2)
>>
>>33481091
Because she effectively is all human, emotions and all. She's just like a wolf child raised in a lab on drugs instead of love. Plus she thinks she's worth less than other people because she can be replaced and all that.
>>
Rapping your ribcage, you think you can hear a faint metal ting. Chuckling once more at your luck, you step back out into the corridor, grab Percy's corpse, and drag it back into the stairwell, leaving a trail of blood. Checking your shot placement, you see your grouping was extremely tight- instead of four holes, there's only one large hole, with ragged edges from the different bullets.

Emerging into the hallway, you need to make a decision.

So, taking that into account I do not see why the age of consent laws would be 16-18, especially with a third of the entire population being extinguished. Eternal summer probably doesn't help either.

While I'm neutral on the whole subject of waifuing, if this Mari ever finds out that we're now some kind of combat cyborg, given how she's been developed in this quest so far I don't think it would be too out of character for her to make some kind of unwarranted advances on/towards us.
>>
>>33482066
Oh god why
I can barely stand it being summer here even for a day
>>
Eternal summer isn't all it's cracked up to be.

There's no replenishment of the soil or plant and animal life like what happens during winter. There's no winter monsoons to help growing seasons in places like India, Afghanistan, or the Philippines.

Eternal summer means consistent drought, with no relief brought by winter snows, especially in places like the United States and Canada, which are the world's breadbasket, basically.

Granted, you're probably able to grow stuff in Siberia, but that soil had been frozen for how long? It's worth piss to a drowning man.

So yeah, unless Gehirn and NERV have been working on genetically engineered crops as well as giant robots, don't forget the (probable) mass starvations and famines that are probably rampant in third world countries without the ability to desalinate water, pipe it, and use it to irrigate croplands, like the USA would be able.

Actually, after something like Second Impact, I can legitimately see countries crack down on underage sex and divorce in marriages, as the strength of the family would be more necessary than ever, in order to have prosperous families with more than one kid.

How common is it for a couple to have a kid together, then split, and the kid never has siblings? I knew quite a few kids in that situation when I lived in Alabama, DEEP IN THE BIBLE BELT.

When suddenly over 1/3 of the population dies, and then everyone else in shitty area's are dying out from starvation the few countries that do have their shit together would make it as easy as humanly possible to have a kid.

The thing is, the underage law is simply to keep the women in education long enough so the government has more workers, which means a better economy.
So you have to balance which is ore important after the second impact, future workers or over working your workers to keep the economy from collapsing?

Personally considering the point about Kaji, I imagine Japan brought it's age of consent down but made it a lot harder to divorce

Also spreading the "seed" further would be better for humanity. More diversity in the gene pool would be desired so they would probably encourage as much partner swapping as possible

>Start checking rooms.

The first room you check is across the hall from the elevator and stairwell, and it's.... An empty storage room. Working fast, they're all the same. Empty storage rooms, judging from the crate markings in the dust. Swearing, you check the hallway again. You take off up the stairs at a sprint, rifle leading the way.

Your burst into the hallway and come face to face with a woman. She looks startled at your appearance- shirt half hanging off, chest rig, and rifle.

“Son, you're bleeding!”

“It's only a flesh wound.” You dash past her, headed for Mari's room first. Sprinting through the hallways of a secretive base while heavily armed isn't exactly inconspicuous, but speed and assuring the safety of the Fourth is. When you arrive, Smith is sprawled out on the hammock beside Mari's door, rifle leaned against the wall. He looks up at you from behind his sunglasses and novel, something about games and thrones, and stops whistling Johnny Cash long enough to greet you.

“Sup?”

“Is the Fourth safe?”

“Yup,” he nods slowly. You nod as well, panting. Now that you've had to exert yourself and the adrenaline is wearing off, you've just been shot twice. Granted, the bullets didn't penetrate, but you're pretty sure that there's still some kind of internal damage. .45 ACP is designed to kill, after all. (Most bullets are, but that's quibbling.)

“You been involved in something,” Smith asks you with a glance at the half ripped shirt. You nod confirmation, and he sighs, before sitting up and shrugging out of his own shirt.

“Where are you off to now?”

Not sure about talking to Commander, but it's probably an OK idea. The moles know we're still alive, so whatever cover we may have had will soon be blown or is already blown.

The scientist in charge of the Eva (or the commander) should know who Robards is, if that's even a real person, and should be able to check on access logs. It would be very easy to slip A BOMB into the Eva armor, and that's no good for anyone involved.

“I need to speak with the Base Commander,” you tell him. “And probably the check the Eva for bombs,” you add as an after thought while you throw his shirt on. Feeling torn on the issue, you finally prop your rifle next to his, and hand him the chest rig. “You've got thirteen full magazines, twenty-six shots in the rifle, and a possible with twenty-seven in the possibles puch.”

“Gotcha, hoss. 's a shit ton of ammo, yeah?”

“Yep. If you need to, use Mari's bed to barricade the door and her desk the window and hold out until I can get to you. Just in case.”

“Gotcha. Can I go back to reading?”

“Sure, I don't care. Just take care of the Fourth.” He nods his acknowledgment of your orders, and then you're off, subdermal armor plating and all.

You eventually track the Commander down to his office, where he's having some sort of late lunch, a sub sandwich of some kind.

“Come in, come in! Can I offer you anything?”

“No thank you, sir. While investigating a lead earlier I wound up in a gun fight with this man.” You slide poor Percival Robards' ID card across his desk, avoiding a stack of papers, and the sandwich's wrapper. Davis takes a sip of his drink, and then examines the card.

“I remember young Robards! An intelligent young man, quick on the uptake. Are you positively sure?”

“I swear on the two bullets he put in me, sir.”

“Such a shame. He was such a bright young man...” Davis sighs heavily and leans back in his chair, before looking sadly at his sandwich. “I'm afraid I'm no longer hungry,” he comments.

“Quite, sir.”

“Well, Special Agent, what would you suggest?”

“I've knocked their manpower down by one, but they know who I am, probably. I would suggest letting me check the Eva for explosives.”

“That's alarming, son. What do you think the odds are that they've wired the Evangelion Unit?”

“At least better than even. Robards WAS an armor tech, sir.”

“True, true. Still, this is disturbing. Such penetration!”

“Indeed, sir.”

“Well, I suppose I'll leave you to it, then. Please, try to refrain from shooting more of my staff, Special Agent.”

“I'll try my best, sir, but I can't make any promises.” He nods and dismisses you, and you head for the hangar where the Evangelion is stored. Inside you find the chief scientist, a youngish looking man with wild eyes and a decent looking goatee, holding court over an experiment to see if the Evangelion had a Babinksi reflex.

“Nice goatee,” you say by way of greeting, and he looks up from the notes he's scribbling furiously.

“You fool! What are you doing, you'll contaminate the experiment!”

“I need to speak with you,” you tell him, and he sighs heavily, before calling the experiment off.

“Do you know a Percival Robards?”

The scientist looks offended. “Of course I do! I am Dr. von Franken, head of NERV-Nevada's- that's classified information you're not privy to. Who are you exactly?”

“I found a man with his badge trying to kill Section Two Agents.” Dr. von Franken pales noticeably, and begins stroking his chin, muttering under his breath. Finally, he shakes a fist at the sky.

“Percival? Percival is a good helper! Never complains, always willing to work harder and longer! Where is my Percival?”

“Robards is being detained right now,” you lie smoothly, “for questioning.”

“Ah! Let me see my assistant, we will clear this up!”

“Sir, can you tell me what Robards looked like?”

“Twenty-four, blond, if I were a fag I would say he was good looking enough, why?”

“I'm afraid I need you to know what's under the Evangelion's armor, Dr. von Franken.”

“Impossible! Highly irregular, highly illegal!” He's agitated, now, you think. Now might be the time to....

>ID.

Reaching into the back pocket of your pants, you withdraw your wallet, and flip it open, making sure your thumb is covering your name. He takes it in, and he's seen enough Section Two identification to know the real deal. Sighing, he leads you to a computer that's set up to display scans of the Evangelion. He takes the seat and boots it up.

After about four minutes, he finally manages to get the most recent scan, taken yesterday, up. To your untrained eyes, it looks completely regular. Apparently, von Franken agrees.

“See? Nothing out of the ordinary. Alles in ordnung, Special Agent. Now if you will please, I have work to do! Be leaving!” Biting back a curse, you leave and head for a bathroom.

Once you find one, you take off Smith's shirt, a size too large for you, and set it on the counter, examining your wounds in the mirror. They've stopped bleeding, but that doesn't mean they still can't get infected. There's a first aid kit in every bathroom, on the principal of the matter, and you find it. Taking it off the wall, you open it and withdraw a bottle of bactine. Grinning, you apply it, and then apply bandages, like the kind to go on a papercut. Wounds taken care of, at least for now, you put the first aid kit back, and put on Smith's shirt.

When you find him outside Mari's room again, he's idly tossing an American football into the air and catching it again. When he sees you, he throws it at you. You catch it and toss it back, almost on reflex, and he begins interrogating you.

“So, boss, what did you find?”

(1/2)
>>
“According to the chief scientist, everything is alles in ordnung.”

“'s probably bullshit. He show you images of the robot?”

“Yup, nothing was out of the ordinary, that I could see. What'd you do while I was gone?”

“Read some more. Played catch with myself. I coulda gone pro, you know, I played for Ole Miss.”

“Nope. I'm not a handegg fan.”

“H-handegg? It's FOOTBALL,” he tells you indignantly. You merely nod, instead of ribbing him some more, and he takes a closer look at you. “Why don't you get some sleep, boss?”

“Yeah, that's a good idea, thanks.”

“No prob, boss. Enjoy your sleep.” You nod your thanks and head for the airstrip, first. You'd rather not wake up with the base on fire because you got careless. Carelessness gets people killed, and getting people killed gets you in trouble with the bosses.

The truck at the tarmac is where you left it, and you shimmy up the ladder at the back of the fuel tank, and open the valve where you duct taped your IED. Ripping it out, you set about getting your watch back. When you finally succeed, it smells of aviation fuel and despair. Knowing you'll never be able to get the despair smell off of it, you settle for placing it back around your wrist, before heading for the room you share with Smith.

It's a Spartan affair with two cots on either side of the room, a window in the center of the far wall, and two footlockers, one of which is where you store your things. Shooting a quick text to Johann to let him know everything is okay, you're struck by curiosity regarding your new armor. Taking your utility knife, you use it to make a cut. Pulling the skin up, you see....

Metal. Intrigued, you begin tapping the flat of your blade against your chest, listening to the distinct ring of metal on metal, dulled by your flesh. “Ha,” you chuckle.

“If I had to take a guess at what they did to me, they probably used titanium or something as an outer layer, bonded with proteins to bond to my ribcage, sternum, and spine, in order to facilitate three hundred sixty degree protection of my vital organs. Titanium to deflect bullets, something like calcium carbonate for an inner layer, to absorb the impact,” you tell yourself. Pleased with your observations, you put the knife up and bandage the new cut, before settling onto your bed and waiting for sleep to take you.
