We went for a week without finding a proper place to settle, when the second family showed up, you and one of them got into a fight, you were nearly killed by that same person shortly after. With everything that's been going wrong under my watch...well, it's made me feel unbelievably stressed and...inadequate, I suppose. Them, when something went right, it was because of you and Felna, not I. Despite me being the leader, I've made no meaningful contribution. When you and Felna wanted to speak in the meeting, I was so desperate to accomplish something myself, that I rejected your help because I thought you'd do better than I. Then, when you stopped me in that fight, well, my ego and feelings of inadequacy took over, especially when you revealed yourself as the Avatar, and clouded my judgment. I know that is not an excuse, but it is what happened. I was trying to keep you down for the sake of my own pride when I should have simply been proud of you."

Oh, almost certainly not. We're the fourth avatar, it's likely that hasn't even been discovered yet. No, all the Avatars whose training we've seen followed the cycle. Korra, Roku and Wan did it that way, too. The reason Aang refused to learn firebending until Zuko taught him was BECAUSE he tried to skip the cycle, and wound up losing control over his fire in the process. He was afraid to firebend again as a result. And the opposite of your starting element being the second you learn appears to be intentional, based on some of Roku's comments. It's meant to be some sort of coming of age test, forcing the Avatar out of their comfort zone.
