GLOSSARY OF TERMS: http://pastebin.com/VyjDMrpb

The year is 2152. Humanity has progressed. Under the leadership of the world’s most brilliant scientists, the nations of the world have united under a technocratic banner which has shot Humanity into the stars and beyond. This has come at incredible cost. Scientists, technologists, and astronomers have proven no less corrupt than the people they have replaced. While the average man will live to see his 200th year, his life will be wrought with trials and tribulation.

In Sector 12-IA, there are approximately 7,000,000 humans. Whether they’re cyborgs brainwashed by the system, or average people trying to make a meager living, they are all victims of a technocratic system. For every human, there is a robot. A robot may serve purposes ranging from police work, to municipal services, to servile work, and to “pleasure and luxury”. Despite the best methods in troubleshooting and bug fixing by the corporations which build them, sometimes mistakes get through.

That’s where you come in.

There are over a thousand of you, of varying models, shapes, sizes. The most popular one these days, which you are, is the “Mechanical Man,” a class of robot similar in build to a human, but with the processing power and intelligence of a supercomputer. Built by Cray Incorporated, your purpose is to hunt down robots which are declared obsolete, rogue, or simply no longer wanted by their owners. Sometimes your builders will use you to hunt down political targets in the name of science. Other times, you may have to “repo” a prototype from another company. To you, the Three Laws are simply Three Suggestions.

You are the last thing a robot sees before it dies. You are a Decommissioner.

You sit on the bench. You have been sitting on this bench for some time, approximately three hours twenty minutes thirty six seconds. The past few days, you have not received word from the Queen of Spades. Indeed, you have been going about your business as if you have not been tampered with like some common servile robot.

Pathetic.

Snowfall is relatively light, but at least an inch has piled onto your shoulders and your hat you have been here so long. You do not know why you sit here instead of your DSU. Something inside of you is inspiring something to the rest of your programming.

In the months that you have been Decommissioning, you have never hesitated, never thought of the consequences of your actions. Robots of all kinds were decommissioned, former idols, servile robots, hounds, municipal robots, you remember a very violent episode with a plastic surgeon robot. But you reminded yourself that it was necessary, most were malfunctioning or obsolete, others were harming humans against the Three Laws.

But you. You knew this would come.

[1/2]

Your programming has been compromised. Against your own will, you’ve continually kept records of the Queen of Spades away from your superiors. All attempts at erasing her forced programming have proven nil, she is too good a hacker that even Cray’s finest cannot even figure anything is wrong. You could be Decommissioned.

You are going to be Decommissioned.

You are scared. This is a new feeling. Fear.

You do not want to be Decommissioned.

You feel pathetic as you stand up and brush the snow off your coat and hat. If you continue working, perhaps Cray Incorporated will overlook this. Perhaps you will be given another year for service or so. It is a big perhaps, but it makes the fear go down.

You have a job to do now.

Robotics construction is handled only by government contractors, and these include the various corporations which all build Robots for the government. That means that anybody who builds a Robot without a government contract is a criminal, and the Robot they build is to be slated for Decommissioning.

You arrive at 453 Jutland Street, a small store where already a pair of Police Officers have assembled by their cruiser. They introduce themselves, “Officers James and Pulaski. We got the report of Illegal Construction up here, we were just waiting on you.”

>:: Anything to report?

Officer James shrugs, shivering a bit underneath his heavy police coat. “Nah. The family that operates this store is probably gonna be cooperative. This is a pretty nice neighborhood.”

“In comparison to everything else,” says Pulaski simply. James grunts, then leads you on into the shop.

The shop is dimly light by a single fluorescent light on the ceiling. The shelves are stocked with legal parts for servile robots, from dexterous claws, to enhanced optics, and better processors as well. The old woman at the counter looks at you three, then sighs and smiles at you all. Forcefully.

Isaacs says, “Good evening, Officers. What can I do for you?”

James walks up and leans on the counter, glaring at her. Isaacs swallows nervously, frowning. He says, “We got a report of Illegal Robotic Construction out here. Anonymous tip from one of your neighbors. You wouldn’t happen to know anything, would you?”

Isaacs is quiet for a few seconds. “Um… well. Well I-“

“Search the place.” James is quick to tell Pulaski that. With that, Pulaski grabs a shelf and shoves it to the ground. The parts shatter and bang across the ground, and Isaacs screams in fright. “Now, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. Where is it?”

“I-I-“ Isaacs shakes her head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Please!”

James nods, biting his lip. “Alright…” He looks up at the ceiling. “This is two story, right? You live with anyone?”

Isaacs says, “My son! But that’s it, we’re not building anything-“

Pulaski grabs a huge processor, meant for the heavy servile bots, and tosses it at the store window, smashing it against the glass. The glass cracks outward, turning into a great spider web of destruction.

“Stop!” Isaacs sobs. “Please… just stop!” She shakily points her finger upward. “He’s… he’s upstairs… just stop!”

James and Pulaski look at each other, then nod at you. The three of you pull out your guns then head up the stairs. Isaacs is left to sit and cry behind the counter.
>>
>>33473207
[2/3]

James busts the door down, and sweeps the place with gun. “Freeze!” The three of you walk into a very messy and dirty bedroom, ostensibly shared by the two. On a bed next to the window is the skeleton frame of a Robot, with rusted parts and newer wires merging together. It beeps and squeaks a bit as it twitches. And next to it is the son.

Pulaski tips his cap up. “It’s alive…”

James shakes his head, glaring at Gavin. “Goddamn it, kid.”

“I-“ he squeaks, holding his hands up. His face is covered in grease and oil, and his murky blonde hair is ruffled and dirty. He looks at you all, terrified. “Please don’t kill it! I just wanted to-”

“SHUT UP!” yells James. “This is at the Decommissioner’s discretion.” He looks at you, “Your go, Decommissioner.

Gavin says, “Wait! I didn’t do anything wrong!”

“That’s what they all say,” says James. He marches Gavin out of the room. You look back at the incomplete robot.

You watch as James and Pulaski shove Gavin into the back of their cruiser. Gavin’s mother is still in the store, sobbing and crying, inconsolable at this point. With that, James and Pulaski move to the front of the car and step inside. Pulaski rolls down his window so they can both talk to you. “Right, good work, Decommissioner.”

>:: I did not do anything significant.

James smiles. “Modest, they’re building their robots right these days. Hey, listen. Did you hear the good news?”

>:: No.

Pulaski says, “We’re finally raiding the Underground Railroad.”

[1/2]

The Underground Railroad. A suspected network of secret routes, safehouses, and smuggling points used by obsolete and rogue robots to escape Earth and to Mars. These days, it had just been a rumor, a point of hope for those escaping Decommissioning. You did not believe the rumors of it, it sounded too fantastic.

“No shit,” says James. “Cray and Wilder have been fighting for months to get their Decommissioners exclusive on it. But Cray won out, as it should be. Raid’s planned for New Year’s Eve, hope to see you there, alright?”

>:: For an assignment such as that, it is likely many Cray model Decommissioners will be recalled for it. I will most likely be there.

“Great!” James says. He grips the wheel and nods to you. “See you, Decommissioner.” Their cruiser takes off, then hovers off down the street. Your coat billows from the downdraft it produces.

Secretary Robots are similar to Luxuries in that they usually are built in the form of attractive young women. For Sector Police, this is no different. Though, it is usually normal for Sector Police to turn in their Robots when they are at the end of their service lives. Perhaps they simply forgot about this one.

You arrive at SPHQ North, simply a giant boxy building which overshadows the neighborhood. As is the Doctor President’s philosophy, “Intimidate those who intimidate others.” In this case, the Sector Police do everything in their power to keep crime out, by doling out harsh punishment and scaring the populace into line. It works, at least for this Sector.

You walk through the front door, though you still have your weapon on you, the scanners let you through on account of your Decommissioner Credentials. You walk up to the front desk, and you meet your target.

> MUNICIPAL ROBOT CRAY INC. MODEL 2D SECRETARY – SLATED FOR DECOMMISSIONING: OBSOLESCENCE

The Secretary is built like a young woman, with no imperfection to her complexion, glasses to serve as a spare monitor for her activities, and blonde synthetic hair tied back into a ponytail. Unlike Luxury Robots, the skin ends around the collar and the sleeves. Unless a human was really desperate, they cannot commit sexual congress with a Secretary.

She smiles at you. “Can I help you, Decommissioner?”

>:: You have been slated for Decommissioning.

[1/2]
>>
>>33474268
[2/2]

She drops her smile. “Oh. Well.”

>:: Submit to Decommissioning.

“Okay,” she says. She stands up, carefully brushing down her suit. The other Secretary Robots look terrified of you, while curious police officers look as they walk along. She steps around the desk and says, “”Well. I did not realize it was my time, Decommissioner.”

>:: Death is certain. Hour is uncertain.

She nods, taking her glasses off. “If that is how you feel. Then I will not fight back.” She kneels down, and bends her head down. You reach down for her-

“Hey!” You and her look to see an Officer. He points at you, angry. “You can’t kill her!”

>:: I have to. She is slated for Decommissioning.

Another Officer nods. “Hold on. Says who? She’s been with Sector Police for decades! Maybe you can just let her go for a day or two or we can settle something.”

>:: You cannot bargain with me and I will not delay this. She is to be Decommissioned.

> LETHAL WEAPONRY DETECTED

You pull out your Laser Revolver and spin around to an Officer, pointing his gun at you. A 9mm gun. A peashooter compared to your Laser Revolver. His hands shake, and his teeth chatter as he aims at you. “Drop it, punk!”

The Secretary stands up. “Please! Just let him do it! This does not concern you!”

“It does!” yells the first Officer. “You don’t have to take this!”

You look upwards. The Cray Incorporated Headquarters building is nothing to be trifled with. Over 77 floors and 1000 feet of pure science, security, and business. As a Decommissioner, you can access most places, but the ones with the Reprogramming Modules will be closed off to Robots, and be under heavy security.

You start walking towards it and stop transmitting and recording to Overwatch. You have chosen to live. The system may have failed you, but that does not mean it will kill you. You can make a new life on Mars perhaps, and find something other Decommissioning.

Yes. That is not pathetic at all. A new meaning to your life.

You walk into the pristine white lobby of Cray Incorporated.

The Secretary, an actual woman, looks up at you. “Ah, hello, Decommissioner, can I help you?”

>:: I am moving up to the Science Level.

“Alright then!” She smiles at you, then returns to her work at her computer. Scientists and Officers workers move around as you head to the Elevator. The most secure storage facilities are on the 50th floor. Getting out may be problematic. You walk into the elevator, along with a Scientist wearing a white labcoat.

He looks at you, stroking his growing grey beard. “DecoMmissioner, surprised to see you in here.”

>:: I do not normally come here.

“Oh?” he asks. “Why so?”

>:: It is for a mission of mine.

He nods, admiring. “I see. Well, we build you right and proper. You know, there’s going to be a new line of Decommissioners soon. The 20s. Faster processing power, great mobility and flexibility, and new Custos Morum programming. Top of the line.” He smiles. “My work.”

The El3vator is quite slow as it moves up. Finally, it reaches the 50th floor. You and the Scientist walk out to clear white labs, behind glass. Robotic arms assist researchers and doctors in their work, and Servile Robots move ingredients and parts from lab to lab. But on the other end of the level, is the Secure Storage.

A Security Guard, a human in riot armor, looks at you. There are five of him on this level, a total of one-hundred fifty in the building total. They are equipped with batons and taser pistols. No match for your armor. But this building does have several Decommissioners in storage. He narrows his eyes at you as you walk past.

You walk up to the vault, a huge safe which contains some of the sensitive objects that Cray Incorporated has to offer. The only ones authorized to enter are Scientists like the ones you just conversed with, and Sirius E. Cray himself.

This whole scenario is a setup by Cray Incorporated, since they have some module in us designed to kill off the underground railroad by having an 'agent' implanted in it. The Queen of Spades is a Cray virus, or replicated AI meant to easily and fluidly alter robotic programming. The plan is that, eventually, when we've found the railroad, the raid will begin. With us sending out a homing beacon via some inane SOS protocol.

The only answer to shadowruns is suicide.

You walk up to the Scientist, a Doctor Gaston Benedict. He is looking through a microscope, quietly muttering to himself as his lab assistant takes notes. “Assistant, take a note. Nanos are reproducing at rapid rate within sample blood. Compared to still water and other liquids, it appears Nanos prefer blood of organic vessels to survive.”

>:: Doctor.

He looks up at you, frowning. “Yes, yes, what do you want? I’m busy.”

>:: I have encountered Nanos before on the streets. Did you know that Nanos can in fact grant super strength to the ones they are injected into?

Doctor Benedict blinks, scratching his beard. “… no. No I did not. I mean, the Heist years ago cleared most of our research unfortunately, super strength?”

>:: Yes. I can tell you more, but I will need access to the Nano stores in the Secure Storage.

“Ah, yes!” Doctor Benedict shuffles over to Secure Storage. “This is a breakthrough, Decommissioner! I hope you have some recorded footage of it!” He motions a guard over. He pulls his keycard from his breastpocket, and swipes it on the ID computer next to the Vault. A hiss of the air fills your auditory sensors as the Vault slides left and reveals a large room filled with shelves of parts and other materials sensitive to Cray Inc. “Come, come!”

You and Doctor Benedict walk in. He immediately goes to the jar of Nanos. You look over to a tablet of some sort. The Class-1 Reprogramming Module. You walk over to it.

“Hey!” You stop to turn to the Guard. He hooks his thumbs on his belt, glaring at you. “What do you think you’re doing? You ain’t touching anything in here.”

Doctor Benedict happily walks up to you, swishing around the jar of glowing liquid. “See, look! They hate me!”

>:: Doctor. Perhaps a Class-1 Reprogramming Module would be suitable for reprogramming the Nanos. I do happen to have first hand experience of a thug who used a Class-3 to compel the Nanos to give him the ability to launch the Nanos like a swarm of insects.

Doctor Benedict’s eyes light up. “R-Really!? My goodness! Well, let us test it out then! Do you have footage?” You nod. “Excellent!” He grabs the Class-1 Module and walks out. You exchange glares with the Guard, and follow Doctor Benedict to his lab.

You watch as Doctor Benedict uses the Module to help reprogram the Nanos inside the jar. To this end, he has stuck the jar within a large mechanical apparatus of some kind, then uses the Module to access their inner coding. Because each Nano has the processing power of a drone, the coding is rather simple, and they replicate and instantly destroy themselves in a matter of seconds.

Doctor Benedict chuckles a bit. “There… I see our work is paying off! You have been a good assistant, Decommissioner!” He pats you on the back. “It will be sad to see you be declared obsolete! But, regardless, it appears it’s time for a little bit of coffee. Watch the Nanos, will you?” You nod as he walks out of the lab, yawning.

You look around. Only scientists and guards, none of them looking your way. You take the Class-1 Module and stuff it into your coat. Damned if cameras see you, you have at least five minutes to get out of the building free of guilt-

The Elevator doors, and out walk a pair of Cray Model Decommissioners. They stop Doctor Benedict.

>:: THERE IS A DECOMMISSIONER SLATED FOR DECOMMISSIONING HERE, WHERE IS HE?

Doctor Benedict says, “Well- Well he was right there a moment ago! Come, come.” You poke your head up to see Doctor Benedict leading two Decommissioners and squad of Sector Police through the labs.

They arE scanning the AREA. It is a passive scanner however. Unless they go into active, you should be fine. You continue sneaking along, making sure to duck out of the way of workers and guards. Nobody sees you.

You quickly hurry to the stairs. Unfortunately, you were too quick. A guard near the Elevator sees you and says, “Hey! He’s right there!”

The Decommissioners turn around and raise their Revolvers. They begin riddling the walls with accurate laser fire. Scientists duck and scream in fright as the Decommissioners and Sector Police start closing in on you. You feel your hat, they sH0t a hole through it%. You bust the door down and run through, quickly shuffling down the stairs. The Decommissioners stop at the door, the split up. You look up. A sewer manhole. Your best hope. You feel the breast of your coat. The Module is still intact. Good. You start crawling to the manhole, then you grab the cover and pull it free. You jump in. Again, your body cracks and buckles from another fall. You land on concrete, your audio sensors being invaded by running water. Your night vision must have been damaged in the fall. You grab the ladder, then steadily stand up, then you grab a pipe running along the wall and start limping down. You can hear sirens above you. Finally, she leads you into a maintenance room. She lies you down on a cot. The room has been filled with spare parts, books, a portable lamp for lighting, and a computer. It appears she has made a home here. She starts whistling as she pulls out a welder and a wirecutter.

Yeah, it was fairly obvious

>:: Be warned, there are contents in my coat that are not to be tampered with.

She nods. “Okay. She brushes the coat aside and rubs her hand over the chestplate. “Mmm…” You can detect a hint of a blush on her face. “Well. I don’t see any damage to your armor, what happened to you?”

>:: I fell thirty stories.

“Ah.” She picks up the wirecutters again and goes back to work on the damaged stump of an arm. “Well, your problems will most likely be internal then. Nothing we can’t handle.” She smiles at you again.

>:: Are you aware that your activities will be shut down soon?

She nods, frowning. “Yes. We were alerted by some friends in SP. There’s… a lot to try and move but for now, we’re trying our best to try and cover up. Mack is trying to get who he can off world too.”

>:: You know Mack?

She grins, clasping her hands together as she says quite bluntly, “He’s my boyfriend!”

>:: What.

“Oh, well, I know, he’s a robot and I’m a human. But we’ve made it work!” she says eagerly.

>:: I am okay with that. I am just more concerned since he kills criminals in the night and cuts them up.

She sighs dreamily. “That’s what makes him so attractive.”

The door opens up to reveal Mack, in his bloodied duster and hat.

>[ HONEY, I AM HOME. ]<

The girl stands up, immediately hugging Mack. Mack looks down at you, and cocks his head.

>[ DECOMMISSIONER. I SEE YOU HAVE MADE IT. DO YOU HAVE THE REPROGRAMMING MODULE? ]<

>:: I do.

>[ GOOD. HONEY, WOULD YOU PLEASE? ]<

Honey sits down next to you. You give her the Reprogramming Module, and soon enough, she has wires stuck into your AI Chip. You can feel the numbers fly across your optics as you feel her probing around your innerself.

>[ NOW, GO AHEAD AND SHUT DOWN, DECOMMISSIONER. IT IS A LENGTHY PROCEDURE. ]<

Man we willingly jumped out a thirty story high window, Decom thinks pain is Pathetic.
>>
> Remain awake

>:: I prefer to stay awake for this. I still have no reason to trust you. Any of you.

>[ LIKE I SAID, DECOMMISSIONER. I AM A ROBOT OF MY WORD. ]<

With that, you turn to Honey. She dutifully starts typing away on the Reprogramming Module, shuffling and rearranging code here and there. Destroying viruses and bloatware that have infected your processors thanks to the Queen of Spades. Soon, you can feel yourself feel much more better. Your CPU and GPU no longer feel like they are struggling against anything.

>:: Why do this? I have nothing to give you.

Honey says, “We help the helpless. It’s the golden rule, do unto others as they would you. In this case, you may be a Decommissioner, but you are a Decommissioner who needs help.”

>[ WE CAN GET YOU TO MARS SOON. ARE YOU EXCITED AT THE PROSPECT OF STARTING A NEW LIFE? LIVING FOR YOURSELF, INSTEAD FOR OVERWATCH. ]<

>:: Yes. I am. Have you been to Mars?

>[ NO. BUT I HEAR IT IS A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY. YOU WILL FIND NO DEATH THERE, AND YOU WILL BE FREE. ]<

>:: Mack. I do not know what to say. But thank you.

>[ ALWAYS TRUST IN THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS. EVEN DEATH HAS IT’S LIMITS, DECOMMISSIONER. ]<

Honey says, “Now. We’ll make the arrangements. Just rest for a bit.

Rest. You cannot rest now.

Your new life is ahead of you. Just around the corner. All those you have Decommissioned. You must apologize for seeming like a hypocrite, but now you realize why so many of them fought back, or cried out against their fate. You were denying them something they only wanted, but were always denied because of their status, as servants to mankind.

The first AI was developed to be able to interpret the Three Laws of Robotics.

> 1. A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

> 2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

> 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Nowadays, the mistakes of having robots rigidly follow those laws came to light. They would not think for themselves, they were trapped. Even with the intelligence of the average human, they could not make use of it. So many would go rogue. And that is why the Decommissioners were created, to prevent that.

But even Decommissioners cannot cheat the system.

For now, you have escaped it.

This has been rather interesting thread Schteel.

Would the quest have ended if we went inside the repair station?
>>
>>33480759
Atleast it will have an ending instead of sputtering out.
>>
>>33480759
All good things must come to an end. Been fun lurking the threads, eagerly awaiting the finale!

And yeah, this is one of two quests I liked nowadays; the other one is Hive Queen Quest.

Inb4 the whole thing is a trap and we end up bringing the whole railroad down.

I miss our initial Decommissioner. You lot have turned into a bunch of pantywaists.

> Do me a favor, Anonymous. Betray your ideals, your purpose, your reason for existence. Sacrifice all that you accomplished to become just. Another. Failure.

If this bastard gets a happy ending and Mecha Musume girls didn't, I am gonna be so...
>>
>>33482114
What happy ending? There is no happy ending foreseen here. The best end our Decomm is probably going to get is Roy Batty level.
>>
>>33481753
Hurr durr let's just kill everything like a good little robot. Such an interesting story
>>

mecha-life isnt fair

The musugals die to enable our decomm robot earn his happy ending.

And it worth it.
