Old thread

>>33443749

You are Sireyi Valyenya, 18 years old, you are on your first quest.

You have retrieved the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn. But now you’re lost on another plane, trying to find your way home.

You are walking in the gardens with Princess Sofia, and Lord Lenda, an old noble.

“What was your question?” You ask Sofia.

“You said earlier about how my powers made me a Paladin, and how a Paladin should always do the right thing, no matter the personal cost, is that really what I should do?”

Ok, that’s a bit of a heavy question this early in the morning.

>Ask further questions, what is she getting at specifically

Addendum:
>The way I encourage is to help others in a way that you yourself can stay happy. This is not always the most efficient way to help the most people, as some proclaim is the obligation of a ruler, but it will keep you sane and of a fresh mind. And if you lose those, even the best philosophy won't make you a good ruler.

“I think everyone should strive to do the right thing, no matter who they are. Paladins just formalize that idea into a way of life. Contrary to popular belief "the right thing" does not always mean sacrificing yourself for others. Your own life is important as well.” You say “but was there something specific you were thinking about Sofia?”

She closes her eyes briefly and then looks at you, her gaze unwavering “Yes, she says, I think I know how to solve this whole mess, and stop the Empire of Drache getting stronger.”

“Ok...” you say, encouraging her to say more .

“The Sorcerer” she says “The Third Demon Lord, was a terror in his own right. If I am married then sooner or later I’ll be expected to provide an heir, and my vision has made it clear that if I become pregnant, I’ll die.”

“If that happens, then he’ll be free, and the whole world, not just this tiny island, will be in even greater peril.”

“If we could kill The Sorcerer, that would be a far greater service to the world than anything else I could do.”

“You’ve convinced me that you could probably kill him if he had just emerged from the Heartfire. I think you should kill me, and when the Heartfire fails, kill the demon lord.”

There’s a moment of stunned silent before Lenda gasps out “Absolutely not child, I forbid it, what would happen to the Island, your people? Don’t be in such a hurry to throw your life away!”

“It’s my choice!” she insists “Yes, I realise I would be abandoning my people, but I don’t want to get married, I don’t want to live under some nobles thumb, just to sign the degrees Ninver pushes in front of me. I can do something to help the entire world!”

My last reply >>33450560 still fits. This is not a sane choice. There is not just a binary decision. Even if she lives, she does not have to live under the thumb of politicians. We will help her.

Logical argument:
>Assume I can kill the demon lord. Now the other two will assimilate this island and soon the rest of the world. You might destroy one Lord, but you would give the others the whole world.
>Second idea: We really don't know if we can kill him right now. There is a good chance it would just release the Demon, destroy the island and, with that, give even more of the world to the demons.

Question: do we know Any really powerful paladins who would be interested in courting her from our home plane? Or, hell, Any noble. The support that they could provide would make it impossible for the council to force a marriage. Assuming we can use the Heartfire to power a planar portal of course.

It would only take a month and a few days assuming we can get Blessed Health 2 and 3 soon, since 3 lowers it to only one month of gestation.
We do have a 3 month time limit, if you'll recall.

Blessed Health 2 can work on others, but it only lowers gestation to 13 weeks, or 3 months and 1 week.
In order to make our time limit, we need Blessed Health 3, which lowers gestation to one month.
>>
>>33450838
>>33450843
Ah, that's what you mean. I do not consider that a problem because:
a) I assume it would take far less than 3 months.
b) Given their current plans to only have her marry at 18 they seems to assume that the weakened barrier can still hold for at least 9 months.
>>
>>33450923

>>33450947
Good catch. Didn't think of that
Still, they plan to have her try to have a child after she has turned 18. Which, given human physiology, might still take a month or more of trying. They assume that the barrier will hold, even if weakened.
>>
>>33451015
I'm not sure what they are thinking then. Might have to ask her for clarification.

All I'm saying that voluntary sacrifice is something completely different than murdering someone and it's a good act on part of the one giving.

It's a shitty solution, but not an evil one.

Blessed health also allows to assure pregnancy. One intercourse would be enough.
>>
>>33451162
That part doesn't work on others, and we don't know if she can learn Blessed Health.
Personally, I'm part of the camp that believes being descended from Konig means she'll learn mostly combat-oriented powers.
Yes, healing is combat-oriented, if you don't see how useful it is then go play fire emblem.

“Your willingness to give yourself honors you as superior to most rulers I know” you say, knowing you have to handle this carefully “But let's figure out a better way before you throw your life away in a sacrifice.”

“The way I encourage is to help others in a way that you yourself can stay happy. This is not always the most efficient way to help the most people, as some proclaim is the obligation of a ruler, but it will keep you sane and of a fresh mind. And if you lose those, even the best philosophy won't make you a good ruler.”

“As for myself I could not commit an act of evil just to stop a greater one, I'm sorry. There is another way, I know it, I believe in it.”

Princess Sofia looks thoughtful as she considers your words.

“What was that about marriage act, Lord Lenda?” you ask, grateful for another topic.

“Ah, what, eh, yes” he says “Thanks to um, a few favours I have a copy of Ninvers amendment to the Royal Marriage Act. It has everything we feared it would: a transfer of certain powers to the husband; that the Regency Council can choose a husband for Sofia; a few sops about voting thrown in for Michol; and it limits the nobles the Council can choose from to those under the age of 55, with no current wives, and that they must be ‘the most senior member of their house currently present within the Kingdom of Hanse’” He snorts “which limits it to 3 people, Ninver and 2 of his cronies.”

“But what they forgot to include” he says “Is far more fun, they forgot to exclude foreign nobles, and they forgot to specify what happens if Sofia wasn’t present at the ceremony.”

“What?” says Sofia

“Yes” he cackles “If the islands protections are going to weaken when you turn 18 anyway, it makes no difference if you’re present on the island or not.”

“Now” he says to you “Where did you plan to go next?”
>>
>>33451258
>After we break the barrier
And how do you propose we do that?
Oh wait, you don't know how.
Because the entire reason we're doing this quest is in the hope of a way home.

“I had a few places in mind” you say evasively, not wanting to reveal too much.

“Hah good enough” he says “Sofia used to convince one of her maids to dress up as her when she was younger, so she could run around like a hellion, I was think a bit more of an elaborate ruse this time, complete with a young baby to ensure that the spies of Drache have no reason to believe the islands defences are weaker.”

This idea sounds crazy, you need to discuss it further

She can reach out in the form of answering a prayer, but the second time we prayed she couldn't reach us.
I doubt she can send a miracle our way until we get the barrier down.

You selected the option to reject the plan on account of being too dangerous in addition to the question.

>>33451472
>>
>>33451334
Well, we gain a level or so in sorceress, and then we hit the barrier with concentrated shaft of energy, and shatter it.
>>
>>33451346

>Sofia would still end up in an arranged mariage?
I'm pretty sure it not being her who got married in first place would be valid grounds to nullify the bond though.

>What of the island. If we don't find her a match she would like, the island will weaken.

Although hopefully once we get into Drache heartland, we'll manage to wreak some havoc so that invading the isle will be last thing on their mind.
>>
>>33451579
That's...
There are so many things wrong with that, I can't even start.
There is literally no correct part of your statement:
We don't gain levels in the Dungeons and Dragons manner, we gain ranks in sorc magic of which currently 3 are available.
Literally none of the spells effect barriers in that manner, and none of them would work on a presumably 10th rank spell.
NONE of them use a shaft of energy, and if you meant freeform magic then that isn't a thing.
The barrier isn't even a physical thing, it's an effect across the whole dimension that makes it so even the gods can't reach into it.
If we want to get magically powerful enough to break the barrier it would likely take months or even years.

You cannot solve the quest to find out a method of how to break the barrier *by* breaking the barrier.
>>
>>33451473
Yes, of course we are, we are finishing this quest in the best possible manner, no matter what, but that doesn't change that this quest *is* a subquest of the Break the Barrier quest and was obtained and started for that reason.
>>
“Sofia would still end up in an arranged marriage when she returned” you argue “this is a temporary solution at best”
“I don’t know how they do it where you come from” says Lenda “But in Hanse marriage only 1 husband or wife is permitted. Provided Sofia found that special someone, they cannot simply marry her to whom they choose, although” he concedes “They could kill her husband, but that’s a problem for another day.”

“The other nobles won’t go along with this” you know Ninver certainly won’t.

“They won’t have a choice” he says happily “I’ll only tell them after you’re long gone, they’ll have to help keep up the pretence, or risk the Empire of Drache finding out – if nothing else their own self-preservation should win out.” He pauses “They may send people after you to bring her back of course.”

“The islands defences will be weaker” after all, this is the whole point of this discussion.

Sofia watches the two of you batting arguments back and forth, turning her head to watch each of you in turn.

“Bah” he says “The Empire hasn’t actually attacked the island in 5 years – and that was a single ship. Yes, the defences will be weaker, but they won’t be gone” he says significantly “They’ll only discover the defences have weakened if they come in force. And if they attacked when the defences where at their strongest they’d lose thousands of their own men, tens of thousands, in the attempt.”

“They won’t attack until they know the defences are weaker.” He insists.

Hmm, maybe. But it’s best not to choose right now.
1/2
>>
>>33451879
“And what about the assassin?” you ask.

“I don’t know” confesses Lenda “The timing is suspicious, there may not even be an assassin, or there could be one that Ninver is over-exaggerating the skills of. The only thing I can think of is to contact the Guild for more information, which will take days given the back channels of smugglers we use.”

“Or you could go and spring whatever trap this is, whilst the palace guard watches Sofia, I’m not sure.”

Sofia’s situation
>Make a choice now
>Don’t make a choice yet
>Talk to Lenda and Sofia some more (saying what?)

Assassin
>Get more info from Thieves the usual (slow) way
>Go hunting him myself
>Go hunting him with Bokin
>Other
>>
>>33451902
>Don’t make a choice yet
>Go hunting him myself

If we can take care of the assassin first I'd feel a lot better about taking her with us
>>
>>33451808
Shhh. Calm down. It might not be correct in any way, but if viewed in a positive light in might resemble the scaffold of an actual plan.
>another level in sorceress
Might just mean purchasing more sorceress skills /powers.
>hit the barrier with energy
Well, we were told we could break it once we have enough power. We might learn a powerful spell, that could be sloppily described as a concentration of energy. We might also find a sort of "magic gun" or artefact that can turn our magic in a barrier-shattering bolt of energy. Who knows.

Unrelated: I have to leave now. Don't kill Siyeri while I'm away.
>>
>>33451902
Okay, so all our arguing is completely pointless since this third option is better, potentially.
We need to make sure the old guy isn't a demon spy, first.
I think we should try and find out who's responsible for all the damn assassins getting in, too.

>Detect evil on the geezer
>Don't make a decision yet
>Go hunting him myself in dragon-form
>>
The issue of marriage can be avoided by her becoming Queen without marrying first. Once she is queen she should have enough power to change the rules regarding marriage. What we should deal with is creating an heir. That's important and should not be delayed.
>>
>>33451902

Does Bokin count as royalty, being son of the mountain giant chief?

I kid, I kid.

I'd like to know how Sofia feels about the idea herself. Although I suspect we may happen across a fugitive prince of some conquered kingdom on our next adventures...

Anyway, as for the assassin, if there is one, he definitely needs to be dealt with or he might ruin Lenda's plan. Could we go slumming - I mean, hunting with the princess disguised?
>>
Lenda does not detect as evil. You also viewed him with Arcane Sight earlier.

He does not have non-detection on him, he does have an item that boosts his health though.
>>
>>33452009
The problem is the nobles are going to force a vote on who she should marry *before* she's 18, and then have her marry on her upcoming birthday.
>>
>>33452159

Nobles can go fuck themselves when she already returns with a hubby and a babby and of age, dismissing their entire lot. And if they try something funny, like impeaching her (if that's even possible), they'll pay the price in getting curbstomped by demons.
>>
>>33452206
Yes, that's why we should take her with us, something I am in favor of.
It appeared that he was talking under the hypothetical scenario in which we don't bring her.
You definitely can't impeach a queen, especially not one with a badass demon-slaying angel for a friend.
Also, even if the nobles are assholes, we aren't going to let demons just roflstomp them.

Because the demons are worse.
So much worse.
>>
>>33452280

Of course not. I'm just pointing out why the nobles will keep their traps shut even if they don't like it.
>>
“What’s your view Princess?”you ask Sofia.

She puts her hands to her head, looking a little overwhelmed “I...I don’t know, I mean, I don’t ‘want’ to die, I just thought that was the best way to help everyone. And I don’t want to be forced into a marriage either. I...I want to be free” she says, almost whispering at the end.

Well that’s a decision to make later, for now you have an assassin to hunt. Lenda has one of his assistants obtain the thieves guild contact info from Ninvers cronies and you set off for Ravensport alone, after telling Bokin to look after Sofia in your absence.

You soar high above the water and land some distance from Ravensport, assuming your draconic disguise you head into town, looking for the thieves guild.

You wander through the town, watching everything cautiously. You can sense evil all around you. This place is populated by a mixture of demon-blooded people of various races, including orcs, humans and beastmen. Although how much demon-blood they have doesn’t always set the humans social standing, generally the more human they look, the lower they are in the social order.

Most take great pains to emphasise their demonic features. Here and there people with draconic blood can be seen, although they’re in a minority they’re not so rare that the appearance of one causes comment.

You encounter problems when the tavern you were supposed to meet your thieves guild contact is closed, and boarded up. You take a look around the outside of the building, but it looks abandoned.

"Sireyi, my champion, you are in great danger!" says Velya, and then nothing.

As you wait in the abandoned inn praying, you hear boards being ripped off and doors being forcibly opened. Footsteps enter the building and a hushed voice says “find her”. You can hear a lot of footsteps.

It won’t be long before they find you, what do you do?

Do we still have passive paladin abilities?
If we do use paladin abilties in dragon-form, how far away would the 'ping' of paladin energy travel?
If we use angel abilities, would anything less than a moderately experienced full demon be able to identify it as such?

Although, a warning from a goddess is nothing to be sneezed at. Maybe it would be more prudent to escape out of a window instead.

You wait in your room upstairs for them to come to you. And they do. The door is eased open and two part-demons stand in the hallway. As they see you they raise their shortswords threateningly and one says “come quietly, and you won’t be hurt, much.” The other one shouts to his compatriots that he has found you. You hear more of them coming your way.

They are dressed and armed the same as the two observers where before, though they are not the same two individuals.

In this smaller space, they can only come at you two at a time, though one could always burst in the boarded up window of course.

How do you respond?

Depends on how good the receiver was, out in the street for sure.

>If we use angel abilities, would anything less than a moderately experienced full demon be able to identify it as such?
Not properly, but they could tell it was something unusual and anti-demon.
>>
>>33453472

For the invariable coming fight, do NOT allow the chains to touch you. They are no doubt enchanted something perfidious. Blow a hole in the wall with maxed out storm if necessary.
>>
>>33453497
I forgot to ask, but I assume that angel abilities would send a ping for a similar length as paladin.

Would using our storm-given abilities count as angel, or would most people identify it as a storm elemental doing it's thing?

Angel: Yes

Storm abilities detect as Angel abilities, since that's how you gained them.

“Did Ninver send you?” you ask.

“Ninver? Ninver who?” asks one, looking slightly confused.

“This doesn’t have to end in violence” you say, hoping for a peaceful solution. One chuckles and the other says “right you are, so very right, all you need to do is put these chains on” he rattles them for emphasis “and there will be no violence, none at all.”

They cautiously await a response.

Yes

You take advantage of the fact that they’re all bunched together and a lightning storm explodes in the hallway, you can hear screams and smell burning flesh, as well as smell burning wood. It seems the corridor is now on fire (DE 22/27). Your attackers retreat momentarily.

At the same time...something comes bursting through the boarded up window and attacks you in a whirlwind of flames. You dodge and block its attacks as best you can. It’s moving very fast and it’s hard to make out from the haze of heat what you’re fighting but it looks like a half-demon wielding 2 flaming swords.

One of his attacks hits you, hard (HP 48/58), damn he’s as strong as you are, if not stronger, and those flaming swords hurt.

What do you do?

You throw another lightning storm into the hallway, intensifying the flames there, you hear more screaming coming from that direction (DE 17/27).

The half-demon in the room with you blasts you with a wave of fire, though it does no damage to you. When the flames subside you realise your arms, legs and torso are wreathed in hot metal chains. You can’t move, though you can still use your powers

What do you do?
>Lightning Bolt

Pretty sure that we need our hands free to cast.
Even then, the things are probably designed with the victim of them being a mage in mind.
>>
>>33454487

I suppose that is a possibility. But apparently we can still use powers.

this guy >>33454480 offers a good alternative too though
>>
>>33454508
>>33454487
If we can't cast then I'll second >>33454480
>>
>>33454508
Well, most of our powers are just spell-like abilities, not proper magic.
Divine Energy and Arcane Energy are two different things, as well, and I doubt they'd be expecting to go up against DE in a godless world, ergo we can still use DE powered abilities.
That's what I'm assuming, anyway.
>>
>>33454558

In that case we may have an edge in it that the commander thinks we're finished and may be able to goad some info out of her. Maybe we should do that?
>>
Ok, dispel chains it is.

Yes they are magical, and yes you can cast spells whilst restrained, it's just harder.

Roll 1d20-1 for dispel, first 3 rolls count

Please also decide how much (if any) extra Arcane power is to be used, average of first 3 choices will be used.

You can roll and pick arcane power with the same post if you like.

Pour 2 extra energy into the dispel (not sure how much of a difference that makes)

>>33454653
>>33454674

I'm telling you guys, we should go with 12 like I suggested.
>>
>>33454720
If it actually adds to the roll then sure. While I know it boosts the spell, I have no idea by how much.
>>
>>33454746
Throw enough AE at the problem and I'm sure we can slide by with a shit roll by overwhelming the magic with raw arcane fury.
Not mention we have 34 points and our most expensive spell is 2 points by default.
I'd rather have 20 points left and not get abducted.
>>
>>33454800
eh good point. I'll support trying to burn 12 on it then
>>
You focus your arcane powers and attempt to dispel the chains, but they remain wrapped around you. The Half-demon facing you smirks raises one hand in front of you says “night-night Miss” and clenches the hand into a fist.

Burning hot agony flares through you, and you black out.

End Thread

Next thread will be at 12-noon BST on FRIDAY. I am not planning on running tomorrow.

Thank you for playing, I hope you enjoyed and I apologise if the quest was a bit slow today.

I’m leaving now but please post any questions or comments you have in the thread, I’ll make sure I read the archive before the next thread and do my best to answer any questions, respond to concerns etc in the next thread.

>>33454880
12 arcane energy burned for no additional effect?

>>
>>33454880
Well tits. That sucks.

Anyway, can we get a more thorough breakdown of just what exactly pumping more DE or AE into a spell does?
>>
>>33454929

Well the rolls were really shit.

On the plus side, I guess we'll finally meat our mirror counterpart at least (if we haven't already)
>>
>>33454959
Possibly, but I doubt it.
One guy seemed to think the half-demon was a female, but he's a dude, and therefore not our Dark Sister.
I just hope Sireyi doesn't get raped, really.
>>
>>33454880
Oh, and thanks for running Pally. Guess we should have just gotten out of there when we had the chance.
>>
>>33454946
Damaging spells and effects do more damage.

Otherwise extra AE/DE adds to roll to use spell - as it does for Dispel. But he dumped a LOT of Arcane Energy into his spell too.

After all, you were going through his men like blades of grass.

You scared the hell out of him and he dropped the big guns on you.
>>
>>33455039
Next time we're dumping all 34 onto it.
That'll show them.
>>
>>33455039

>>
>>33455089
Of course we are, but there will be chances to get off on the way.
>>
>>33455089
OP said he wouldn't bad end us, I trust him on that.
Consequences and shitty situations, yes, but no VN style bad ends, only character death will end the quest.
>>
>>33455089
You're not going to wake up in a good place.

But you'll have plenty of opportunities to escape before something truly bad happens.
>>
Not calling for a retcon or anything, but can we make it to where if someone doesn't put the correct modifier on their roll, it doesn't count?
>>
>>33456067
Like, I take the .5 seconds needed to add a modifier, and some other guy beats me to the window because he didn't. It's kind of annoying.
