You are Sireyi Valyenya, 18 years old, you are on your first quest.

You have retrieved the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn. But now you’re lost on another plane, trying to find your way home.

You are searching for a Black Dragon called Brearax whom you believe can help you find your way home. You spotted a large cave opening that looks like it could be the entrance to his lair.

A half-dozen 9ft-tall brutish humanoids come roaring out of the cave mouth. Some have clubs or crude swords, and two have large leather bags full of clay pots that they prepare to throw.

Ogres, Wonderful.

What do you do?

Target?
>Attack the four ogres running at you
>Attack the two hanging back with the clay pots

Action?
>Storm (hit 4 ogres or the 2 hanging back)
>Lightning (can hit 2 ogres at once)
>Halberd (smite optional)
>Forceful Gust of Wind (knockdown 2 ogres)
>Area Wind (penalty to ranged attacks, affects whole battlefield)
>Other

These Ogres don’t look like they’d listen to a parley.

Halo is assumed to be active unless specified otherwise.

Bokin is currently 10ft tall, he tends to travel in that size whilst chatting to you.

He’s pulling out his greatsword and preparing to pull him armband off. Looks like he’s going to go large and counter-charge the 4 ogres moving towards you. What orders do you give him?

“Bokin” you order “go big and take out those two ogres” indicating those hanging back “right” he says, rushing forwards and pulling off his armband, growing to 30ft in height.

As the four ogres rush towards you, you summon your elemental powers and a storm of lightning erupts around them, arcing between them and making them convulse (Divine Energy 21/23).

Grimly they push through it into melee range with you, though they look hurt and are moving slower after that shock. As the four swing their clubs and swords at you, you easily dodge or parry all of their blows.

Bokin rushes towards the two ogres, who both hurl clay pots at him, one goes wide, the other hits him straight in the chest, eliciting a scream of pain. A viscous black liquid has splashed on Bokins chest and is eating away at him like well, acid (Bokin HP 39/52)

Nevertheless he smashes both ogres down with a single swing of his greatsword, their blood hitting the snow as the two of them go flying. They’re wounded but not dead yet.

Aww, just to late to vote against immediate violent reaction. Remember: Our goddess considers demihuman lives to have value. Killing them is generally bad, it's just their natural reaction to attack those who invade their territory!

We are way faster and can teleport, even with our giant-friend. We should simply have lead them away for a bit, then teleported to the cave entrance.

Attempt 10 or so. Internet doesn't like me. Hopefully, I can participate later!

>We are way faster and can teleport, even with our giant-friend. We should simply have lead them away for a bit, then teleported to the cave entrance.
Not saying this is a good idea, but there is absolutely no mention of parley, discusion, conference, truce or other such things.

“Keep at it Bokin” you urge him to fight through the pain.

You swoop away from the four ogres attacking you to line up a proper shot with your lightning bolt. Lightning crackles briefly between your hands and you launch it at the ogres as they turn to face you, your power arcs and dances between them and the three you hit drop and don’t move (DE 19/23).

Seeing his allies drop the last ones looks indecisive and then flees back to the cave mouth, possibly to summon reinforcements.

The two ogres Bokin is facing split up and circle him, hefting their acid bombs carefully. He brings his greatsword down on one, almost splitting it in two, its partially bisected body falling to the snow. The other throws its bomb but it goes wide and misses Bokin. The acid on his chest continues to eat into him (Bokin HP 36/52).

RE: Parlay. Though very much in character for Sireyi to try and solve this without violence. I discouraged it for specific reasons, to be revealed later. Attempting to talk to foes is ALWAYS an option (assuming intelligent foes) but if I mention it's unlikely to work, the DC is higher than normal).

I acknowledge parley is not the only non-violent solution. I did not think of leading the ogres away, so did not include it as a standard option. As a write-in option it was a perfectly viable solution and had it got more votes, would have been the chosen course of action.

I specifically mentioned parley not just for this encounter but for future ones as well.

You fly over next to Bokin and touch him, healing him (DE 17/23, Bokin HP 45/52).

Bokin swings at the last ogre, killing it. He looks around and sees the one fleeing for the cave entrance. The ogre is almost there and is yelling out a warning. The acid eats into Bokin (HP 43/52)

“Shouldn’t we stop him?” asks Bokin, as he furiously scrubs himself in the snow to remove the acid.

Thanks for waiting.

You soar over the ogre just as he is about to enter the cave and hit him with a focused blast of wind aimed straight down, forcing him to the ground. Unable to stand he attempts to crawl slowly away, until Bokin catches up and grabs him.

“Why did you attack?” you ask the ogre, though you suppose that maybe you attacked first.

“This our place” the ogre growls “ogres live now, you no be here.”

“Ogres are pretty territorial” comments Bokin, as he holds the ogre down as you speak to it.

“Where can I find the black dragon?”

“Dragon, deep, down very deep” says the ogre. Well, that’s something at least.

“How many Ogres live here?” you ask, the answer takes a while to untangle, numbers are not his strong suit.

Eventually you estimate that there’s maybe 100 ogres of fighting age, with perhaps another 50 very old, very young or otherwise not fighters, led by a chieftain called Ironguts.

“Ironguts eats you” threatens the ogre.

“How can I end a fight with Ogres without killing them? Is there a nonlethal way to fight ogres?”

The ogre looks confused, you ask the question several different ways but the only answers he gives are ‘run away’ and ‘give up and get eaten’.

You tie him up, you’ll let him free later.

You leave the pots for now, you can come back for them later.

>Success
As you look at the entrance you see what you originally mistook for a cave mouth, isn’t. The area around the mouth of the ‘cave’ shows dwarven runes and symbols, and remnants of the original stonework can be seen as you go inside. It looks like this was a dwarven stronghold before the Ogres moved in and crudely expanded all the doors, rooms and hallways to suit them.

Well that makes things slightly easier. If these dwarves are anything like those back home then the fortress layout should roughly be: A great hall far below (a suitable lair for a big dragon); the settlement itself (homes, shops etc) – probably where the ogres live, in the middle and right at the top would be the kings home – perhaps the ogres chieftain is up there.

Exploring the entrance you find what was once a guardpost turned into an ogre lair, the smell makes you feel queasy, refuse and rotting food scraps are everywhere. The place has been crudely enlarged to ogre proportions, Bokin will have no problem in this place in his smaller form, but only in certain places will he be able to fight in his larger form.

There are some stairs leading up, some leading down, and a level corridor leading deeper into the stronghold.

You decide to head down first, you’re here to find Brearax after all. You wonder what deal he has struck with these ogres, if they worship him as a god, or perhaps he controls them with threats or promises of loot or food.

You head down, deep into the old fortress, several times you and Bokin hide from ogre patrols. The patrols are loud and you can hear them coming long before they get close, giving you ample time to hide in one of the many side-passages.

You wander through a series of maze-like rooms, following staircase after staircase down. The further down you go the few patrols there are, until all you can hear is yourself and Bokin. And the stone walls closing in around you, in Velya’s name being underground creeps you out. Bokin doesn’t seem bothered though, and you draw courage from his example.

You enter a vast cavern, its dark in here, even with your eyesight you can see very little, and Bokin is probably blind. The ceiling is far overhead and the whole place has an empty feeling, a low wind moans through the cavern.
There’s an awful smell coming from up ahead, like rotting meat. As you advance cautiously you realise that’s not wind, it’s breathing, something....big is here. As your eyes search the near-blackness you see a vast shape rear up in front of you and you instinctively light up your halo, ready for a fight.
Ahead of you rears up a massive black dragon, it’s head turning towards you as it breathes in deeply ready to unleash its acidic breath. Its jaws are vast and it could swallow you whole, and probably Bokin too, without needing to chew.

Bokin lets out a surprisingly high pitched “eep!” of fright and crowds in behind you.
>>
>>33421058
You ready yourself for the hardest fight of your life only to hear a deep voice wheeze out “Ah, it’s too early for the ogres to be back for more acid, who are you?”

Nostrils flare as the dragon breathes in your scent “Hmm, frost giant, young and strong with a hint of the mountain peaks and....and...it cannot be!”

Now that you have a moment look at this dragon properly you see that it’s scales are dull and flaking, more grey than black, empty sockets are where it’s eyes should be and long thick chains are secured to its neck and forelimbs.

You see that its wings and hind-legs have been hacked off, the wounds are festering and leaking pus. As it speaks you see that its mouth is bereft of teeth, containing only rotting gums. Its forelimbs have short digits with no claws, the digits slowly weep blood. There is no tail to be seen.

It brings its head down towards you and snuffles in your direction “Has it been so long, have I been trapped here so long that the demons have fallen and the Gods returned?”

It chuckles, a sound full of bitterness “Tell me, messenger of Heaven, have you come to punish me for my crimes? As you can see, you’re a little late.”

“I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya” you say, after all, manners never hurt “And this is Bokin”

“A Paladin eh? I’ve not seen a Paladin in centuries, nor tasted one for longer, shall I eat you little paladin?” he smacks his gums “Perhaps not, too long on a diet of refuse, fresh meat would give me indigestion.”

“Welcome, Sireyi and Bokin” he says, pushing himself up in his two remaining limbs, the stumps of his wings twitching “To my home, I’m sorry about the mess, all of my orc servants are dead. And the ogres won’t clean up.”

“The demons are still here” you say.

“Well, that must really be inconvenient...for you.” He responds, seemingly unconcerned.
“And I’m not actually a full angel” you say, you wonder if everyone is going to confuse you for a full angel, with nothing to compare you too.

“No, no I suppose not, Heaven wouldn’t send one of its Host for me anymore” he says wistfully “They did once, a whole host of them, very tasty. I kept one in a cage for some time, but she died, poor thing.”
He focuses on you again “Hmm, half-angel, half-human, smelling of rain and lightning and new life. Why, why did you come here, to laugh I wonder, hmm? Are you sure you don’t have a little dragon in you?”

You decide to leave that jibe alone for now “Are you Brearax?”

“Brearax, Brearax” it says “Yes, that was once my name, Brearax the Mighty, Brearax the Black Shadow, run, run and hide little ones, Brearax is coming!” it booms “I come to eat the naughty and the wicked, mighty Brearax...” he trails off.

“Tell me of your crimes.” You say “Perhaps you can be redeemed.”

He laughs, a wheezing cough that ends in a croak “yes...yes” he says “redeemed, perhaps I can, do you have 20 years for me to recall each of my crimes?”

As I have been misunderstood before: This is not a vote to heal him right now. This is just asking whether it would be reasonable, given the information Sireyi possesses, to attempt to heal the dragon, should we decide him worth the DE.

In this case I vote to, if there's a chance that he would commit himself to fighting demons, give him the amulet and help him with the ogre infestation.

“I don’t have any dragon in me” you say, trying to sound regretful, no point in insulting him
“No dragon in you?” he says skeptically “would you like some?”
Unbelievable, half-dead he’s still trying to....nevermind.

You move on to more important matters “A Frost Giant Mountain-Speaker named Wegenthal sent me, he said you could help me.”

“Hmm, I’ve never heard of him” responds Brearax “But I know Mountain-Speakers, all cold wind and stone and avalanche. I’m sure the idiot sent you to me because of fate, bah!”
Bokin steps forward at this insult to his grandfather but you thrust out an arm across his stomach, stopping him.

“He said you could help me” you say “I’m here by accident, I need to find a way off this plane. I wish to break the world-barrier. I know you will not help me from the good of your heart, but I'm sure we can come to an agreement. Not like there are many better ways to get back against the demons for you.”

“Ah yes, that makes sense” says Brearax, “Clever Mountain-Speaker, needs magic not of the gods to break free from this little Hell the demons have created. I was once a mighty sorcerer, could have cracked their silly barrier like an eggshell” His voice lowers, regretful “Once, but no longer, too long just keeping myself alive, used up too much...energy” he wheezes.

“I was told to look for a dark sister of mine” you say, though you’ve no idea if a dragon that’s been trapped for so long will be able to help you.

“Hmm” he says “what’s your name again?”

“Sireyi Valyenya, formerly of House Valyenya”

“Perhaps” he says “you should try House Valyenya, they were a noble family in the kingdom of...Hanse I think, perhaps the demons killed them all.”

“I was told you defeated Villathrax” you say, hoping to keep the dragon talking.

“Villathrax” he says, his voice deepening “I remember him, they said he was stronger than me. That he was unbeatable” his front paws clench, leaving trails of blood on the floor “But I proved them wrong, I proved Brearax was greater!”

“I fought him because I was the greatest, because no dragon could match me” he says “They used to come at me in flights you know” memories overtaking him “threes and fours altogether, and I still sent them fleeing.”

“And from there” he says mournfully “I knew it would be all downhill, I wasn’t getting younger, and it was getting harder and harder to be the Black Shadow of Terror. And when the demons came, they sent emissaries to me, tried to get me to join them. Stupid demons” he smiles in memory “Fun to play with though.”

“And Villathrax’s name spread across the land ‘oh, Villathrax burned this city’ ‘oh did you hear Villathrax demanded a sacrifice of a hundred virgins to spare a country, ‘oh Villathrax kidnapped a princess’. Bloody Villathrax this, Villathrax that.”

“I really thought he’d kill me, you know” he continues “but I didn’t care, I wanted to be remembered as the greatest dragon of all, I didn’t want to just fade away, hahahah!”

“Ah, all this” he gestures around him “Was once a great dwarven hall, but I took it from them, and kept my treasure here....where is my treasure....? I stole it all you know...”

"While I have been told I could potentially live for a few thousand years, staying 20 years to hear your crimes does not seem advisable right now. Perhaps another time."

“Not even the lewd ones?” he asks hopefully.

“You said something about orc servants” you steer the conversation “what happened to them, and to you?”

“Ah yes, I had a clan of orcs that served me, worshipped me really, when I came back after my fight with Villathrax I was badly wounded, so very badly. I needed time to rest” his voice drops to a whisper “But as I lay here, an ogre tribe came in and slaughtered all my lovely orcs. Orcs are great, as long as you bring them food, and some human or elf women, they’re happy, but ogres are horrible, horrible creatures” he sniffs “They cut my wings off, cut them right off” He pauses “And every now and then they come in here to collect some acid, or they won’t feed me, I’d refuse but, I don’t want to starve to death, I’d rather die in battle.”

“So you can’t help me then” you say, dejected.

“Oh I didn’t say that...” he responds in a crafty tone of voice “But first I want you to help me.”

“You want me to free you?” you ask hopefully

“Hah! Yes, off this mortal coil!” he barks out a laugh “but first I need you to fetch something for me, and then....we bargain.”

“What am I fetching?” you ask warily

“One of the last eggs of my line” he says “My great-great-great-something-great grandchild. The orc chieftain hid it in his chambers before he was killed, the ogre chieftain has probably taken the same chambers at the top of the keep. Find it and bring it to me and then we’ll talk”

He settles down, laying his head on the floor “Now go, I’m tired, we’ll talk more when you get back.”

It seems you won’t get anything more out of him, until you return with the egg.

Time moves differently on different planes.

Alright, own up, who is posting on /tg/ from another dimension?

You begin the tough job of climbing back up all those stairs and heading for the top of the fortress.

It seems like you climb for hours, and your legs ache, you wish you could just fly up but the air in here is so still that you’d use more energy flapping than you would walking, and using your power over air would drain your magic.

Again you encounter patrols, and again you easily avoid them due to the amount of noise they make.

As you’re walking along a corridor you hear a rumbling above you, the ceiling is caving in! Your mind fills with panic as you see you and Bokin trapped under a pile of rubble, with no way out!

You run back as fast as you can, Bokin following as rocks, grit, ogres and pebbles collapse into the space you were just occupying.

Wait, ogres?

It seems the whole mountain isn’t falling in, just this level, and there were some ogres above you. Somewhat stunned, they begin pulling themselves out of the rubble. It looks like it was a patrol in force, a dozen ogres, though 4 died in the rockfall and the rest are bruised. One sees you and growls out a warning to his allies.

“What do we do?” asks Bokin

That's hard to say. They can be very crafty about not being found out. Sending agents out to incite violence and spread genocidal propaganda abroad is one of the indicators though. Being generally oppressive and genocidal at home is another one.

“Stick close to me” you say to Bokin, getting separated would be foolish. As the ogres come lumbering towards the two of you lightning stretches from your hands, blasting in to them (DE 15/23), lined up in this corridor they make the perfect targets. Your lightning rips through them, those struck are burned and twitch when they move, but still able to fight.

By your side Bokin waits until they get close before unleashing a powerful attack, killing one of those your lightning struck.

Fortunately for the two of you, in this partially collapsed corridor, they can only come at you 3 at a time, any more and they’d be tripping over each other.

One attacks you, a clumsy swing you easily avoid. Two attack Bokin, and one hits, opening a deep wound in Bokins side (HP 10/26).

I get the feeling that when the current empire crumbles, the demons (if they are demons, and not just evil men) are going to profit from it somehow.
I've seen some of their plans that got leaked - a worldwide treaty to remove Barons and Lords' abilities to respond to natural disasters and economic collapses, instead putting that power completely in the hands of the Kings.
Roughly a century ago, we had a global disaster that was engineered for the benefit of the corrupt wealthy nobles.
I know the empire will crumble. But I expect that this will be intentional. Ruins are cheaper to buy than castles, after all.

You decide to stick with what works and pour on the lightning power (DE 13/23), your power rips through the ogres like dry leaves. One of the ogres you’ve already hit falls, and two of those you hadn’t before are now badly burned.
As the three ogres try to hit you with their blades, Bokin retreats and starts throwing chunks of rubble at them, distracting them.

One of the ogres hits you, but a blow that would have split an ordinary person in half has little effect on you due to your enchanted armour and divine protections (HP 56/58).

One of the three ogres next to you decides to head past you to attack Bokin.

The point still stands though, empires crumble. The ogres follow you, hooting and growling and commenting on how you’ll taste in their cookpots, arguing over who will get to eat your wings.

You draw upon your remaining powers and catch all 5 ogres in an intense lightning storm, 3 of them die instantly, their charred corpses dropping to the ground, the other 2 take longer to die, falling to the ground and twitching as they try to climb to their feet or crawl away. When the storm ends, your powers almost exhausted, you see that they are all dead (DE 1/23).

You certainly didn’t enjoy that, but it was them or you and Bokin.

Your bracer will heal you in minutes, but you’ve exhausted your powers and Bokin still isn’t on full health. You have a tough decision to make.

You could push onwards to the ogre chieftains chambers before the alarm is raised, and hope you can either bargain with him or defeat him.

The two of you could hide in this vast fortress for a day or two to allow your powers to recharge and heal Bokin, but the ogres would discover their dead kin and be watching for you.
They might even find your hiding place.

You could retreat from the fortress altogether and return later. The ogres would be on guard but the chances of them coming after you and finding you would be very slim.

Giving the bracer to Bokin is possible, yes.

You'd need a day to recover your divine energy anyways, the only downside is that it'd take another day to re-attune to Sireyi afterwards - if she wanted it back.
>>
>>33422959

>>
>>33422959
>>33422936
>>33422926
Personally I'd rather have Sireyi keep the bracer. With it we can go from battle to battle shielding Bokin every time. With Bokin using it, we'll still be guarding him, so he'll rarely get hit, but we will still be getting worn down.
>>
You decide to hide in the fortress, you’ve passed a lot of good hiding places in your trip upwards. There’s a few of the dwarven-carved houses set straight into the rock that would make ideal hiding places.

The ogres haven’t carved them all out to their own size, making it unlikely that they go there, and they’d be very defensible if you did get caught. It would be pretty cramped but safe.

You find a suitable place after giving your bracer of healing to Bokin and the two of you settle down to rest.

>>
>No encounter, it is ogre, you do not get shrekt in the night

A day later you are both fully healed and the pool of divine energy within you has been restored. Undiscovered in your dwarven house you both emerge cautiously, though you have to wriggle underneath Bokin and pull him out after he gets stuck in the doorway, much to his embarrassment.

Bokin seems to want to say something about you saving his life, but this really isn’t the time, you tell him you’ll talk once you’re out of this place.

Creeping through the fortress you make your way to the top, avoiding patrols as best you can.
Eventually you come to a big set of double doors at the end of a corridor, they are unguarded, but look quite sturdy.

You move quietly up to them and you can hear loud ogre voices from within, apparently someone in charge is displeased at his underlings for being ‘Tiny-bellied weaklings’

As the four ogres turn towards you, you bring down the thunder, arcs of electricity flashing between them (DE 17/23), they are thrown apart from one another by your attack, smoking and burned they nevertheless climb to their feet and start towards you.

As they get close, Bokin, at his full size, cuts two of them down with a sweep of his greatsword.

Of the two survivors, one misses you, the other hits you full force, not that it matters (HP 56/58).

The two of you engage the ogres in close combat, they don’t back down, but the two of you cut them down easily. Just as you do so the Ogre Chieftain comes barrelling out of the doorway and attacks you.

He is noticeably larger than the others, perhaps 12ft tall, he is wearing massive chain and plate armour and is wielding a huge axe, ornate bracers decorated with gold cover his forearms.

You can sense moderate evil emanating from the axe (magic, divine).

His axe cleaves into your side and sends you flying across the hallway, your flight only arrested when you smack! into the wall (HP 42/58). You slide down the wall to the floor, take a moment to gather your wits and then climb to your feet.

He turns to Bokin. “It’s been a while since I’ve killed a giant” he says, grinning and revealing a fang-filled maw. He holds the greataxe one handed and starts whirling it around his head in a threatening display.

He pays you no attention, either he doesn’t think you’re a threat, or he believes he killed you with that attack. You could attack him whilst his back is turned, or try to divert his attention away from Bokin, but lose the element of surprise.

With a silent gesture you order Bokin to fall back, he retreats until his back is against the wall, the Ogre Chieftain stalking after him slowly, clearly wanting to savour the moment.

Your halo blazing above your head and a corona of lightning wreathing your halberd you smash into him from behind, pouring both the power of your goddess and the power of the storms into the strike. Lighting crackles over his armour as a burst of divine power illuminates everything (DE 11/23). He stumbles forward with the force of your blow, though his own armour blunts some of the damage.

Actually we requested surrender. And besides, its a bit different to just randomly tell some evil dude to be redeemed and hitting them with redeeming touch
>>

If he declines this surrender request than I'm voting killing him. Or interrogating him before using him as a bargaining chip with the dragon.

Also it's Konig, spelling it Honig makes you look like an idiot or a newfag.

But anyways, I didn't say we wouldn't redeem him, I meant that if we don't beat the fellowship DC on an 18, we're just giving him openings with further attempts.
We'll still try and redeem him, just not by asking politely for him to surrender.
Beat him into unconsciousness/near-death and then redeeming touch him.
>>
>>33425144
I'm going to have to agree, if he doesn't surrender than hes dead
no mercy, no redeeming touch bs, death

Potatoes, totatoes. My point is that once he's defeated we can safely give him an extra chance. No need to go full autism on your fellow posters.

Beating him would make it even harder to succeed. We'd be pigeon-holing ourselves into being an enemy. Saying these things then doing it is the point. We are weakening ourselves do the ogre can be strong.
>>
>>33425201
I'll agree with the bargaining chip thingy magingy only because I know in my heart that he'll probs get eaten by the dragon so it fills my need for him to get killed

“I offer you one choice, throw away your weapon and bow or die” you say. He grins a toothy grin and says “To live is to fight” and advances towards you, axe held high.

Well, you tried.

You swoop towards him, halberd ready. He stays where he is, ready to meet you. The two of you strike simultaneously. Your lightning and holy power clash with a burst of dark energy he releases from his axe.

You fly backwards across the hall again, agony briefly twisting your limbs before it fades (HP 21/58). As you pick yourself up off the floor a second time, you see him in the distance, walking slowly towards you, as Bokin looms behind him, bringing his greatsword down in a single blow, your young giant friend smashes the massive ogre to the floor. In the silence that follows you hear Bokin say “Don’t you hurt her, she’s my friend.”

The ogre doesn’t respond, he’s dead.

Bokin rushes over to you a look of concern on his face “Sireyi, Sireyi are you ok? Sorry I disobeyed but he was going to hurt you.” He seems to be seeking reassurance.

>Thanks Bokin, but next time, please follow orders
>Thanks for the assist Bokin
>Don’t disobey orders in battle Bokin!
>Other

With the ogres defeated you have a chance to search the ogre chieftains quarters. A quick inspection shows that the regular ogres have nothing of value on them, but the Ogre chieftain has the axe that radiates evil magic, and those ornate bracers.

You don’t think of yourself as thief, but that axe is dangerous and should be destroyed. Although you have plenty of gold on you, your letters of authority from the church mean nothing here. Funds could be hard to come by, and those bracers look valuable.

You bring your Halberd down on the Axe hard, forcing your divine power into it (DE drops from 5/23 to 3/23), when the burst of light fades you see....that the axe is unharmed. Hmm, maybe you can try again later once you’ve recovered some of your strength.

As you remove the bracers from the ogre chieftain they shrink as you hold them in your hands, becoming the right size for you to wear, huh, they must be magical.

>Put them on

You cautiously explore the suite of rooms that make up the ogre chieftains home. Fortunately it is deserted. Your start searching for the black dragon egg.

You put the bracers in your bag, you’ll figure them out later.

The two of you search the rooms from top to bottom. You find an impressive collection of trophies from foes the Ogre chief has killed, all sorts of ogre-sized weapons, and even a large stash of gold, enough to maybe double the funds you already have. You’re definitely taking that. But no egg.

You can keep searching, but someone may come to see the chieftain. Or you could go back to Brearax and tell him you couldn’t find the egg.

Eventually you find the egg, hidden in a secret compartment in the floor, right under the ogre chieftains vast bed.

By the gods it’s filthy under that bed.

The egg is well, egg-shaped, black in colour and slightly bigger than your head. You return to Brearax to give him the good news.

Your trip back down is uneventful, the only patrols you encounter are all loud enough to easily avoid.

“Ah you’ve returned” says Brearax, lifting himself up with his ruined front limbs “Excellent, good, yes, put the egg here” he indicates a shallow depression in the floor.

As you lay the egg down he coughs several times and then spews forth a gout of black acid all over the egg, you jump back to avoid getting spattered “Eww, nasty” comments Bokin.

“There” says Brearax “That’ll hatch it in a few moments, we black dragons can’t hatch without a bit of acid to soften the shell. Now do you have the bowl?”

“Er, what bowl?” you reply, he said nothing about a bowl.

“The bowl to put your blood in” he says impatiently.

“You said nothing about me bleeding” you counter.

“I didn’t” he says, confused “No, I suppose we didn’t get to that bit yet. You have a bowl for the familiar ritual I hope?”

>Well I have a cup in my backpack...

So lets say for example we cut off the head of the ogre chief or whatever (pretend we succeed the roll for Ooc if its Ooc). Would the dragon recognise the head and would have killing the chief responsible for taking out the dragon's wings be a good enough bargaining chip?

“Well I have a cup in my backpack...” you start, before realising what he just said “wait, familiar ritual?”

“The deal is this” he says, trying to wink at you with a ruined eyesocket “I will awaken your powers of sorcery, and give such power as I have left, and you will take the little dragonling as a familiar.”

“And why am I bleeding again?” you ask

“The familiar ritual involves my blood mixing with yours, and both you and the hatchling drink the mixture, and then you have a familiar of course” he says “Normally such a bond is celebrated with feasts and presents, but as long as you don’t tell the little tyke when he grows up, he’ll be none the wiser.”

Hmmm “I have some magic items I need you to identify” you say, wondering if he’ll agree to it to sweeten the deal “Yes yes, of course” he says impatiently “will you take the little one as a familiar or not?”

“I didn’t agree to this” you say indignantly, he could at least have explained things to you first.

Brearax laughs “No” he chortles “you didn’t, but you’ll do it anyway, it’s the price I demand for helping you.”

“How will this help me get home” you say, this being the key issue after all.

“As for how this will help you” he says, “divine magic cannot breach the barrier, and any sorcerer with the power to break it either works for the demons, or is a dragon in his prime who will demand a much higher price for their help, so you only have yourself to rely on.”

“You” he says, pointing at you with a bleeding digit “Will break the barrier once your powers grow strong enough, and when you learn the right spell, I’m just going to wake up your own powers and give you a little boost.”

“Why your blood, why not the hatchlings?” you ask, more out of curiosity than anything else.

“We’ll be using my blood” he says “Because you need my powers, and because I can act as a stand-in for the hatchling, without you having to cut him as soon as he hatches, what a way to enter the world.”

“What side-effects will this have?” you ask, you’re not sure you want to grow a tail.

“Side-effects, eh” he says “Nothing bad, my powers aren’t strong enough to make you into a dragon, though you’d look good in scales I’m sure. The blood will just help tie it all together.”

“Why do you trust me with one of your own...descendents?” you ask finally, recalling the legendary pride of dragons.

“Trust? Trust!” he says “Who says I trust you?!”
He leans down until his head is next to you, on the floor “Let me tell you something that idiot wizards usually find out the hard way.”

accept, fuck the possible corruption.
if QM is going to bait us than we're going to bite it. fuck thinking this though, chance at dragon familiar more important
>>
>>33426153
“A dragon hatchling familiar is all curiosity and trust, a familiar bond with one will...link your minds together, he’ll feel what you feel, and vice versa, mistreating him will hurt you. Wizards are too focused on the fact that having one as a familiar gives them access to certain draconic magics. They never think about what happens when they grow up.”

“A hatchlings mind is without any willpower, but as he grows and gets older, the link will remain, and his mind will be stronger, maybe stronger than yours. I know your kind lives a long time angel-blood. I....haha...I...trust....that you’ll treat him well because one day who can say who is the master, and who is the familiar?”

>Alright, if that is your price
>No, I won’t do it

You are either sarcastic, in which case you should add a /s at the end, or cancer.
There's no chance of corruption, the QM flat-out stated that this quest had no trap options.
Island of Storms and Dark Sister do, though, so we should be more careful there.
