Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

After several days of scouting, planning, and team gathering the day's finally arrived. You and your motley band of ten will take on a small army of gangers in order to acquire illegal xeno firearms stolen from Tau sympathizers in order to give them back even though you're trying to foil them and their plan which is still a mystery. Throne, but you miss the simplicity of the Guard.

You awake to the typical sound of your alarm, though it takes you a moment to actually hear it. Already last night’s memory is fading, but you struggle to try and remember as you lean up. This time it’s different. Before you always ran, or tried to, but this time… you stayed. Better than that, you won. It leaves an odd, but welcome, feeling in your gut. You don’t have long to think on it though as, ever the dutiful servant, Jeeves greets you with a mug of recaff balanced atop his head.

“Good morning, sir,” he says.

“It’s a morning, alright,” you answer groggily, taking the mug. “Thanks.”’

“My pleasure, sir.”

While normally the servo skull would go on about his business, this morning he putters next to you nervously. Or what you think is nervousness. It’s hard to tell with him.

“Begging your pardon, sir,” he says, “but may I ask if you slept well? Last night you seemed… perturbed”

>”I dreamt of a woman, but I can’t say I enjoyed it.”
>”Nothing to worry yourself over, Jeeves.”

"I dreamt of a woman, but I can't say I enjoyed it," You chuckle, playing it off.

"Ah, women," Jeeves tuts. "Dreadful creatures. Lady Massey and yourself prove much better company."

"...Lady Massey isn't a woman?"

"Inquisitor first, Lady second. Her words, not mine."

Thinking this over for a few moments, you go about preparing for the day. You have a few hours before final preparations begin, so you don't feel too pressured for time.

`

>>33402069

The mess holds an air of anticipation this morning, and it's not difficult to figure out why. You doubt anyone was dumb enough to give serious details, but word had no doubt spread of something happening soon.

Today, everyone but Mikel is at their usual place. You're not sure where the Father is, but with him not being part of the mission you don't give it too much though. You spot the men Vincent picked for his team sitting with him, talking among themselves. Alpha is, as usual, off at their own table and having what looks like an argument over something.

Food in hand, you decide to eat with...

>Vincent and his selected cronies.
>Alpha.

Curious, you decide to see what Alpha's gotten so engrossed in. Approaching, only Gabriel notices you as you take your normal seat by him. The others look on as Dominic and Jonah glare at one another, though the latter is much easier at either keeping his cool or hiding his anger.

"-ust can't throw them away like that, can we? After all they did?" Dominic asks.

"They gave away their rights as humans when they left the Guard," Jonah answers calmly. "Killing these men that left us for the Tau is the same as killing those that would leave us for Chaos."

"Bullshit!" Dominic scowls, tone a bit too loud for your tastes. "You can't possibly tell me those two are alike. The guys we're up against still have their sanity. And a proper cause."

"They're enemies of the Imperium, and you'd best be wary of that tongue of yours."

To your chagrin, Dominic decides now would be the time he notices you.

"Lieutenant!" He says, relieved. "Tell this ice cube he's wrong."

"I'm afraid I'm gonna need a few more details," You deadpan.

"The main people we're fighting here are Guard," Gabriel answers warily. "Ex-Guard, but still Guard. Dom thinks we should try to talk them down, while Jonah says all they deserve is a firing squad."

"Just about everyone's given their two thrones," Roxy finally speaks up, smiling at you wanly. "What about you, LT? What do YOU think we should do?"

>"Jonah's right. They're our enemies, and that's that."
>"I think we should do as the Inquisitor tells us."
>"They have a vendetta, but they're not fanatics. Maybe they can be saved."

Jonah and Jami seem pleased by your answer, Roxy and Gabriel accept it, but Dominic still obviously holds reservations. Even so, it seems to have ended their bickering.

"So," You say, moving onto to more pressing matters. "We're all set?"

"Waiting on you, LT," Roxy grins. "Just hope Vinny and his people keep up."

"I wouldn't say that too loudly," You suggest. "No telling what trouble he and his could get into trying to show off. On that note, no showing off."

"I didn't know we were good enough to be show-offs," Jami notes.

"Show-offs?" Dominic asks. "I think the word your looking for is 'experts.'"

"Uh huh," You reply, utterly convinced.

"Don't worry," Roxy chuckles. "We'll get in, get out, and be done in time for drinks. No worries."

>Say something else. (What?)

"I'll keep you to that," You tell her lightly, though you both know you mean it.

With that settled they return to their usual banter, and with that you move on to Vincent and his crew. Of his assembled crew you recognize all but one. Hassan eyes you nervously as you approach, while Grover is too intent on consuming his meal to care for anything else.

The fourth member of his team is one you've yet to meet before. An older man with full but graying hair with a matching bushy mustache, eyeing the room-and you as you near- with a curious eye.

"Mikkey," Vincent says with an accusatory tone. "You keep hanging out with those Alpha people and a man might start getting jealous."

>Greet the Commander!

>Hey, hey, don't get jealous Vince, you know you're still number one in my heart.

>>33404218

"But Vincey, you know I love it when you get jealous," You say, straight-faced.

This lasts all of three seconds, and you both grin.

"So, the Tiny Toys are ready to play ball?" Vincent asks as you take your seat.

"Are you?" You ask.

"Anytime, anyplace," Vincent boasts. "The Lady says, and we follow. Isn't that right, Grover?"

The man doesn't answer at first, and even after a whack to the back of the head from Vincent the man only grunts.

"And how about you?" Vincent asks. "The Lady's put a lot of faith in you, Mike. Not feeling just a bit nervous?"

>"Nervous? I'm terrified."
>"I've got a plan and good people. Why worry?"

"I've got a plan and good people," You shrug. "Why worry?"

"I could think of a few reasons, but I'll keep'em to myself," Vincent says. "Oh, and this here's Jeor. He keeps to himself and does as he's told. I think you'll get along just fine."

The man in question simply nods, and in return you do the same.

"So, uh, question," Vincent says, voice dropping to that low 'the Inquisitor doesn't know about this' tone.

"The Inquisitor doesn't know about this, but I've got a few ID tags just laying about. If we wanted, we could slap a few on the crates we'll be using to transport the weapons. See where they end up."

"Or be found by the sympathizers."

"What happened to no worries?"

"It's possible, isn't it?"

"Well... yeah, but it's not likely. My people are good at this sort of thing. Might show a bit of initiative on our part, get you in her good books."

"And why would you want that?" You ask, growing suspicious.

"You never know when I might need a favor involving the Lady," Vincent gives you a wink. "Who better to act as my messenger than lucky thirteen?"

You bid the Commander and his crew farewell before departing. With breakfast out of the way you decide to...

With time ticking down you retrieve your hellgun, now sporting a new and improved aiming system. With hope, you won't have to be locked inside a barn to actually hit it. Sadly, Cachino isn't too confident on the matter.

As night begins to fall over the capitol and it begins to fall asleep you depart with your team. Transports holding you and the chimeras begin to descend into the hive, and around you everyone does one last weapon check. Everyone is kitted for maximum firepower, and you wonder for a moment if Mikel could have been useful. Then it passes and you look over your own equipment.

You set down in a private, secluded landing zone and the chimeras rumble off the transports. Jonah, Dominic, and Jami act as drivers for the chimeras while Roxy, Gabriel, and yourself man the weapons. The lead vehicle, coincidentally yours, sports a melta cannon, while the other two have standard lascannons.

Before long you're zooming down deserted hive streets, inbound for the stronghold.

Following the road alongside the map in your head, you know it's time. You key the team vox and give the best advise you can think of.

"Keep your eyes open, and shoot everything that looks like it'll shoot you," You say, to positive replies all around.

You round the corner and see the compound just ahead. Not a soul seems to be moving, which suits you just fine. You set your sights on the main entrance, pitying the loss of a quality door, and pull the trigger.

A stream of super-heated plasma goes flying forward, illuminating the poorly lit street before slamming into the gate. It lasts all of a few seconds before sizzling and melting away, providing a serious gap for you.

You and your convoy go speeding through, bee-lining for the structure pinged for holding the weapons. It's near the center of the complex, next to a barracks of sorts. Said barracks goes up nicely as you discharge another shot of plasma into it, quickly eating into the building and its contents.

You swear and grip your chair as the Chimera comes to a screeching halt in front of the now burning barracks. Looking down, you see an oddly calm and concentrated Jami seemingly rather pleased with himself.

"Hit it!" Vincent calls, and the Trooper opens the troop bay.

On either side of you, forming a half-circle around the entrance you made, the other chimeras begin firing at the handful of defenders that had been sleeping at their posts.

"We're on the clock, Vincent," You remind him.

"Too bad I don't charge by the hour," is the Commanders only reply.

"Way to make a lady lady feel special, LT," Roxy replies. "Nothing fancy, people. Just keep it nice and tight while we wait for His Highness."

"I heard that, princess," Vincent adds.

"I know," She says.

At first the gangers are still on their heads from the initial assault, but it isn't long before they rally. Groups begin to appear more often, and it begins to be an effort keeping their heads down.

"First bunch, coming up!" Vincent calls, and you look back to see the Commander and Hassan carefully loading up an oddly designed crate onto the transport. By that, you mean they simply toss it into the troop bay and run back for more. Given the circumstances, you can't exactly compla-

Swiveling the turret, you send a wave of super-heated plasma that engulfs the corner of building and the crew itself. Though you can't hear from inside, their brief screams of agony seem to give some of the less brave gangers pause.

"Last batch, coming up!" Vincent calls.

With their rocket team dead the gangers have much less of a challenge for your chimeras. Slug rounds bounce off and the occasional lasround does little but scorch or scratch the paint.

Behind you, boots thunder against the troop bay floor and another heavy thud heralds another crate.

"Crate's secure," Roxy reports.

"Same here," Gabriel adds.

"Gun it, gun it, go, go, go!" Vincent barks.

The Chimera roars to life and shoots forward, splattering a few unlucky gangers and sending the rest scattering. At the final stretch to the gate a few men fire from the walls, but you make it through all the same.

However, looking behind, you're not out of sight of the compound before you see four dark shapes appear through the destroyed gate.

"We got a tail," You warn.

"Hassan ain't on the gun, so we're fine," Vincent said, ignoring the grumbling from said armsman.

"A couple of souped up cars versus three APCs?" Roxy chuckles darkly. "Well, it's their funeral."

"She's getting cocky," Vincent notes, mindful to keep the comment to your vox alone.

"She's fine," You assure him.

The ganger vehicles easily gain on the Chimeras, covered in crude armored plating and gang markings. Two of them are open-backed, sporting gun mounts that fire sporadically as they bounce and swerve down the road. One of them quickly goes up in a gulf of flames from a well placed lascannon round, but the other three prove irritatingly persistent.

As another vehicle goes up the surviving turret car pulls alongside Dominic's Chimera. The gunner is a large, muscled man covered in scars and white tattoos. He easily avoids the turret, hopping atop it and throwing something on the front of the APC.

He attempts to return to his vehicle, but a quick jerk of the wheel from Dominic sends him careening over the side and in the path of your own vehicle. You don't have time to hear the crunch of bones, however, as an explosion rocks your vehicle. Peering through the auspex again, you see Dominic's Chimera belching fire and smoke and swerving out of control.

Turning hard and crushing a ganger car in the process, the Chimera hits a stationary civilian vehicle and flips over it, crushing it and landing in the side of a run-down building.

"Dom!" Roxy calls out, to no response.

Nearly pulling you from your seat once more, Jami, send your Chimera spinning around. The last ganger vehicle, seeing the odds not in their favor, quickly does something similar and speeds away. Roxy's ride pulls up next to the wreckage, and the Sergeant is out before the ramp fully hits the ground.

"Fucking had to say something, girl..." Vincent mutters. "Go. I'll take the gun."

Nodding, you quickly dismount with Hassan. With Roxy is the man Jeor, who inspects the scene with a shake of his head. Both of them are attempting to pry the troop doors open, and both you and Hassan join in their efforts. After several attempts it springs open, allowing more smoke to pour from inside.

Used to destroyed Chimeras with the addition of a fully sealed suit, the smoke is little more than a nuisance to you. Activating your armor's flashlight along with Jeor, you inspect the wreckage.

Inside, Grover lays unconscious; head bleeding, bruised, bloodied, but alive. One crate remains relatively unharmed, while the other has a shard of metal lodged in the side. In the gunners chair, Gabriel sits with his legs a mangled mess and his chest in little better condition. However, when you touch him a pained groan escapes him.

However, at the driver seat...

"No," Roxy says from behind you, voice breaking. "No, no, oh Emperor no please..."

Again you're glad for your helmet for protection from the smoke. And the smell. The last time you smelt burnt human flesh wasn't a pleasant experience, and you don't plan on reliving it anytime soon. Turning away, you see that Roxy a short ways away on her knees, helmet off and retching.

"We can't just leave this... him... for the scavengers, can we?" Hassan asks.

"I'll set a charge," Jeor finally speaks, tone gruff but well-meant. "They'll get nothing."

With Hassan's help you get Grover and Gabriel into your Chimera, and Jami is quick to take the roll of medic. A forlorn look passes over his face a moment as he looks on at the destroyed Chimera and his half-dead squad-mate.

"I thought I was up next," He sighs. "Guess not."

As he goes about stabilizing Gabriel you transport one of the crates to either of the remaining Chimera's. By then, Roxy's recovered and looks the part of a soldier again. Jeor looks between the wreckage and her, hesitating.

"Do you want to-" He begins.

"Blow it and let's go," She replies, turning and heading back to her Chimera. Shrugging, he follows after, fiddling with what looks like a detonator.

You return to your own transport and take your old place at the guns. Vincent then takes Jami's place, busy treating both wounded men with quiet efficiency.

You start again, and behind you there's a muffled explosion.

A drive later you arrive back at your landing pad to find someone waiting for you. Markus, Sal, and a half dozen other men with no visible weapons await you with a pair of transport trucks similar to the one you hijacked.

As you dismount, Markus greets you with a quiet nod while Sal simply eyes you warily.

"I was told there would be three vehicles," He says. "Did you run into trouble?"

>"Nothing we couldn't handle."
>"Just take your damn weapons."

"Yes," is all you allow. "Everything's accounted for, if that's what you're asking."

Sal asks no more questions.

He inspects each crate and their contents in turn, scowling at the damaged crate. After a few minutes he seems satisfied with what he found.

"I suppose it could have gone worse," he says. "Since this seems to be in... less than mint condition, you may use this as recompense for any material loss."

He taps a foot against the damaged crate, and with a snap of his fingers his men begin loading them up.

In no mood for much of anything, you make haste to get your wounded back to the Antebellum. The trip back is a quiet, subdued ride compared to the one coming down. You note Roxy and Jami casting glances at Dom's empty seat, while Jonah attempts to catch some sleep. Vincent and his men are little better, with Hassan helping Jami tend to their wounded.

Sending word ahead, you set down in a hangar bay of the Antebellum to be greeted by a half dozen Medicae staff led by Melodi herself. She gives you a quick nod before carting off both men to be tended to.

Standing in the middle of the chaos, hands clasped behind her back, Christina waits patiently. When you approach, she waits for you to speak first.

"The mission was a success, ma'am," You report, standing at attention. "Corporal Dominic Beaudoin was killed in the line of duty, and one Chimera was lost. One crate of xeno weaponry were acquired. I'll have a detailed report on your desk by tomorrow."

"Good man, Lieutenant, and good work," Christina nods. "See to your team. We can talk more later."

With the Inquisitor dealt with with no trouble, you turn to your people. Jami left to help, which left Roxy and Jorah as the remaining members of Alpha still standing. Vincent, Jeor, and Hassan watch you curiously.

By now you remember why you didn't like being in command. Situations exactly like this.

"Dismissed," You say, and with that the team begins to break up and depart.

Though like before, you catch Roxy before she leaves.

Or at least, attempt it.

You catch her by the arm, but she shrugs you off and continues on toward the door. You understand what she's going through, but you still have trouble holding your tongue.

"Rox..."

She falters for a moment, hesitantly turning back to face you.

"This wasn't your fault," You tell her. "What happened today... you can't blame yourself. We all did our job. Dom did his part, and nobody can say otherwise."

For a moment it looks like she's about to reply, but then she reconsiders and turns away. This time you don't try to stop her, instead lowering your head and letting out a weary sigh.

After leaving the hangar, you feel a serious desire to...

With the mission still weighing heavily on your mind, you decide to blow off a bit of steam at the drill yard. There, you find a number of armsmen training. Some are curious at your arrival, and you're fairly sure you could convince some of them to train with you. At their own risk.
