“Dear grandchild,
If you have received this package I am most likely dead. We have never met, in fact I do not even know your name as your mother refused to have any contact with me since she left and I have respected her privacy. There are many things I would like to know of you and many things I would like to tell you but all you need to know is that I am your grandfather and that as my heir everything within this package is your inheritance.
Use them as you wish.
-Albert Aaflyn VI”

So goes the letter that arrived to your apartment door this morning. It came with a huge box you have just opened. In it you found several items:
An old book, a pouch full of small cylinders made of some strange metal and some symbols carved on to them, a hollow metal rod, two more boxes, one full of clothing and the other filled with various small bottles with different kinds of powders and liquids in them.
>What do you want to do?

[X] Bottles
You take the box with the bottles and start unpacking them on the floor. They are filled with various kinds of liquids, powders and… things. One thing that strikes your eye is some kind of ball with spider legs and a scorpion’s tail attached floating in some kind of red liquid.
There’s red powder labeled “PHX.meat”, yellow liquid called “A.tears”, green liquid “Nature”, some acid, eyeballs, spider legs, almost transparent powder “stuff”, blue liquid “G’s tears”, feathers and whatever the fuck that thing floating in read liquid is labeled “C:SPESC”

[X] Drink G’s tears.
You take the bottle labeled “G’s tears” and open it, releasing a heavenly smell into the room. You have never smelled anything quite like it before.
Raising it to your lips you take a sip. It tastes like water.

As you put down the bottle you feel something strange in your stomach.
A sensation unlike anything you have felt before spreads through your body as you find yourself in darkness, something dripping on your head.

It takes you a moment to realize you are lying on your apartment’s floor with a huge hole on the ceiling. Luckily, you live in the highest floor.

It’s nighttime and it’s raining and you don’t have a roof anymore. The bottles are scattered all around the room undamaged though the same cannot be said about the furniture. There is a sizeable chunk just missing from your sofa and your microwave oven is broken into small pieces and scattered all around the room. You hear sirens somewhere in the distance.

You put the bottles away and turn your attention to the other items.

While on the surface level a juvenile act, it actually serves an important function. That anon getting mad was ruining the mood for me and (turns out) other anons, so demonstrating to him that getting angry most definitely won't lead to the result he wants was vital. It's one way to police these threads.
>>
>>33403252

>>
>>33403272
>Boohoo his tone hurt my feelings
cry me a river.
You ruined a perfectly good quest by taking the opening hook (inherit priceless magical trinkets) and destroy them for lolrandumb behavior
And no, drinking strange potentially lethal chemicals is NOT in character for anyone who survived to adulthood
if you believe its magic, you wasted priceless stuff and risked random magical mutation
if you don't believed its magic you just tried to commit suicide via ingesting random chemicals.

>This one serious player is wishing death on the retards
>Therefore every serious player is a humourless cunt
Logical fallacy there anon.
>>

But that's an ultimately self-harming method, and can be easily manipulated into causing more harm than good by damaging the narrative or intentionally removing things that the players want.
>>
>>33403370
>All anons are the same person

[X] Book
You fetch a flashlight, grab the book and crawl under the dining table.
You might as well check the rest of the inheritance if your single room apartment is going to flood anyway.

You can tell it feels warm to touch and you assume it’s made of leather or something similar.
As you try to open it you feel something prick your finger. Unable to pull your finger away you can do nothing but watch as more and more blood gushes from your fingertip and is absorbed by the cover until it’s bright red.

An eye opens on the cover and looks around the room for a while before focusing on you. It stares at you for a while before growing a mouth just to grin. Then, as if nothing had happened, the book opens.

You read the first lines of the book.

“This is the grimoire containing all knowledge of the Aaflyn bloodline and only its heir can open it.

You may ask questions from this grimoire and seek the wisdom of your ancestors, but only if you are deemed worthy of those answers.”

Under those words there is a list of chapters.

[X] Basics.
Giving up on that, you decide to turn to the chapter one.

“Chapter 1: Basics.

Awakening.
Every child who embarks on the path of magic must awaken.
This usually happens upon the first successful casting which is instructed and supported by an elder mage though is possible through other means. The simplest spell, ‘bolt’, is usually used.
This spell’s nature, much like many other spells’, is depends on the caster’s affinity.

Instructions:
Focus mana on your hand and release it.”

You stare at the broken window, then your hands, then the window again.

Something within you is pulsating, sending this energy, mana, to all parts of your body. It makes you feel better in every sense of the word.

You break into laughter, letting out all your pent up frustration. After all that has gone wrong today, at least something went well.

After calming down a bit you sit on a corner of the dinner table.

The rain has stopped.

[X] Reading.
You grab the book from your hip, its single eye giving you a smug look, and open fling it open.

“Affinities.
Every mage has a unique affinity, though they may take similar forms; it has been described as the colour or fingerprint of one’s mana. It determines how a spell appears and what it does.

Using ‘bolt’ introduced previously as an example, some affinities may make bolt a spell of healing while others can make it a dangerous attack or curse. Other such first circle spells are ‘calling’ and ‘shield’.”

There doesn’t seem to be any more spells on this page.

[X] Read a bit more, pack your stuff and find shelter.
You turn the page.

“Magic types and the first circle.
Most spells can be divided into categories by types which are ‘pure’, for spells that use only raw mana, ‘barriers’ which are defensive, ‘master’ for spells that control others, ‘curses’ which affect and hinder others, ‘healing’ which is quite self-explanatory and ‘enchantment’ which improve some aspects of target somehow.

The other way to classify spells is by circles, first circle spells being the simplest that almost any mage can cast without needing external help and the final sixth being long rituals requiring ingredients, multiple casters and sacrifices.

List of first circle spells:
Bolt: Focus mana on your hand and release it.
Calling: Draw a symbol to the ground with mana.
Shield: Spread mana on air and materialize it.
Endure: Pour mana into and object and form it into a web-like structure.”

With that you put the book away and begin to consider your options tonight.

You could call someone, or spend the little money you have on a hotel room. You take out your phone and check your contacts.

[] Call your friend Dan. You’ve known him for a year now and while he’s kind of a dick, he’d probably lend his couch for the night, though you wouldn’t be surprised if he made you pay or owe him something for it.
[] Call your old acquaintance Cecil. You used to be close but her family got into an accident and she shut you out. You haven’t seen her for almost a year now, though you know she moved out of the facility where she used to live some time ago.
[] Call your father. He lives with your little sister in the next town. You could probably catch the last bus of the day, though you’d have to explain exactly why you suddenly need a place to sleep and you aren’t sure he’d buy that you drunk magical liquid that blew a hole in the roof.
[] Call no one. You have enough money for a hotel room, though it would be out of your food budget for the month.

[X] Cecil.
You pick the number. Saying you feel nervous would be an understatement.
As close as you were, she was in a pretty bad shape the last time you saw her and suddenly calling for a place to sleep… this is going to be awkward.

You tap the call button and after a couple of beeps she picks the phone.

“Hello.” You hear from the other side of the phone.

“Uhh… Hi. It’s me. You see, my apartment has suffered some… water damage and I was wondering if you could let me sleep there for the night.”

You sit there in silence for a while until she makes an affirmative “Uhm” noise.

“I’ll text you the address.” She mumbles before hanging up.

>cont.
>>
>>33411365
You’ve known Cecil for most of your life; you came from the same neighborhood and attended the same schools. As you were on your first year of high school her family and your mother got into an accident leaving her an orphan.

She was always a bit introverted but since then you haven’t really seen her interact with anyone. You did try to support her but she ended up pushing you away.
During the last year of high school you barely met, exchanging some occasional texts, though she refused any invitations to meet face to face.

You get the text as you finish packing your stuff, having gotten spare clothes and other necessities, along with your inheritance and the book that now hangs form your hip and refuses to leave.

The address is not far from your own apartment.

[X] Moped.
You walk out of the apartment building to your moped. It’s an old thing you mother used to drive with some space under the seat where you can stuff one of your bags.
You swear they weren’t there before but turns out the crate your grandfather sent you actually has loops on the side that allow you to keep it on your back.

While it’s a bit clumsy, you somehow manage to keep balance on the still wet roads as you drive with a huge box on your back and bag on your hand.

You thank your luck as you stop in front of the apartment building and find out the address you’re looking for is in the first floor.
You press the intercom button next to Cecil’s name and soon you hear a small click of electronic lock.
You enter the building and knock on the door to the room.

Some noise comes from the room before Cecil opens the door.

She is a short girl with a long straight hair, some of it covering even her face, wearing a loose t-shirt and blue panties, though you’d never admit paying attention to that particular detail.

[X] Greetings, old friend!
You decide to do your best to avoid any awkwardness and try to act like it hasn’t been a long time since you two actually had a normal conversation.

“Hey, it’s been a while!” You blurt out, sounding way too energetic.

She stares at you with the almost expressionless look she’s had for years now and nods, making the “Uhm” sound you recognize as an affirmative as she takes the bags from your hands and moves deeper into the room.

“So, how have you been?” You continue, following her and doing your best to not let the either the tiredness or the high from your recent experience into your voice.

She sets the bags down by a sofa and gives a questioning look to the huge crate you have on your back before answering. “Fine.” She says. “Been better but… fine.”

“Hmm, that’s good.” You set the box next to the bags, Cecil actually helping you put it down. As she moves towards the kitchen-part of the studio apartment you take a look around the room.

It’s a decent sized room, actually built in the same way as yours. Her bed is in the far corner from the room, to left from the door there’s a small sofa with a blanket and a pillow on it, while to the right there’s a dining table and television with an old DVD player. Further into the room from them is the kitchen, with cabinets, an electric stove with an oven. The sink is next to the fridge, which is in the far corner of the room, right opposed to the bed.

Between the sofa and the bed there’s a cabinet full of miniatures you recognize as something belonging to foreign shows about giant robots. That actually seems to be something of a theme, as both her blanket and curtains have pictures of such. She always did have a thing for those.

Your trail of though is interrupted by your host as she walks up to you with two cups of coffee, offering you one.
>What do you do?

[] Take the coffee.
[] Refuse, you really need some sleep now.

[X] Coffee.
You accept the cup and following Cecil’s lead you take a seat on the couch. She stares at you in the eyes with her usual blank expression. Feeling awkward you try to start a conversation about something, anything.

“So… you’re still into the robot stuff?” You ask, pointing at the answer to your own question on the shelf.

She turns to look at what you’re pointing, looks at it for a while, then turns back to you and nods. “They’re…” She spends a moment just staring again, as if looking for the right word. “…cool?”

“Seen anything new lately?”

Once again the girl spends a moment just staring before shaking her head. “Umhn.” You assume that means ‘no’. You take a sip of coffee.

This is going to be a long night.
