IRC channel is #ngeq on Rizon

Sorry we're late, I spent like twenty minutes messing with my cats by playing wolves and lions and shit making noises.

You are Declan Cryan, NERV Special Agent, assigned to NERV-Tokyo-3's Section Two. You're in a C-130 with two other men, Johann Kerenz, the pilot, and Agent Peter Smith, your backup gun for this trip to Nevada which started out badly, with a C-130 meant for you exploding as the C-141 you were in was taking off.

When flying a cargo plane, there's two schools of thought when it comes to insertions into possibly hostile territory: Come in low and fast and they'll never see you on radar. Come in high and fast, so the pilot has time to react to surface to air missiles and MANPADs, like the Stinger.

Most of the time, this doesn't work because radar is good, and the C-130 isn't meant for stealth. You've been expecting to be hailed for the past hour, once you hit Mexican territorial waters. Surprisingly, it doesn't happen.

“Smith, have you heard any news out of Mexico recently?”

“Negative, sir. Last I heard the federales were still engaged with the cartels up and down the country, with civilian militias engaging both sides as the opportunity presented.”

“Right. Johann, I don't want any part of a civil war. Change vectors, for San Diego. We'll put down under Johann's name, and then we'll try to talk to the Admiral in charge of the Americans' Pacific Fleet, see if we can't get them to let us borrow a carrier group to get the objective back to Tokyo.”
>>
Confirmation comes from both Johann and Smith, and Johann changes the plane's course to reflect your altered orders.

[]Try to contact Subcommander Fuyutsuki, so he can let Commander in Chief Pacific know you're going to need to borrow a carrier group.

Johann's satellite phone manages to connect to NERV-Tokyo-3 fairly quickly, and you're thankful for that. You get a receptionist, and she asks for your name and ID number when you ask for the Subcommander.

You easily rattle off a false alias set up for use in case of situations like this one. The beauty of the thing is, every Agent gets access to that specific name and ID number, to ensure no one specific is compromised. With the signal being bounced from a moving airplane to a satellite to Japan, your voice is fairly unrecognizable.

“Agent,” the Subcommander greets, as only Section Two has access to the false person you used.

“Subcommander. If I were to tell you I was still alive despite being in an exploded C-130 and on my way to California, could I ask you a favor?”

“There's not much in California, these days. Mainly the bases for the US Pacific Fleets, actually. Why?”

“Well, let's say on the off-chance I needed to speak to the American commander for the Pacific about transporting a fifty-five meter and fifty-five thousand ton machine of war....”

“Agent, I'll let them know you're on the way. Is there anything else?”

“Yes, sir. Is there anyone in Nevada I can trust?”

“Commander Davis. He's old Northern, well, aristocracy, for lack of a better term, I suppose, and he places his duty to the United States above everything except his family. No one else.”

“Goddamn it. Thank you, sir.”

“Enjoy your time in the States, Agent.” He hangs up on you, and you're left with a distinctly bad feeling about this.

>Check over all of the equipment.

Experience has taught you that packing your own parachute is the best way to ensure there's no tampering with it. So you find the parachutes, stored in a locker along the side of the craft's hull, and go through all of them, unpacking them, and then repacking them with care. Smith watches you for a moment, and then he asks, in your opinion, a stupid question.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking the parachutes. Unpacking and repacking them. I don't know who did it to begin with, and I never trusted the little old grannies they got to do it for us when I was with the 22, so we went back and redid it ourselves.”

“Why?”

“Because if granny cut a string or three, that's one flat trooper, isn't it?”

“Yeeeees,” he allows. “But why are you doing it for all of them?”

“Because if you and Johann need to parachute, too, I don't want you cunts going splat yourself.”

“Ooooh,” he finally realizes that you're quite possibly saving his life.

“But why the Jeep's, too?”

“So it doesn't plummet into the ground and break, in case we need it to actually DRIVE!” He falls silent and you resume your work, idly fondling the steering wheel of the Jeep. Eventually it ends, and you move on to the Kalashnikov Johann brought you.

It's Bulgarian-made, and firing the 5.45x39mm round the Russians developed in the 70's. With a side-folding stock, this is an AKS-74, meant for paratroopers and police units. And special forces, you reflect quietly.

1/2
>>
>>33320264
Do just immediately assume his family's been abducted, then?
>>
Johann brought fifteen magazines for each rifle. He's clearly expecting a firefight of some kind, and you hope he isn't right. With four magazines total for your pistol, if it comes down to pistols, you're probably fucked anyways. For some reason, the crazy German brought bayonets, too. You're already wearing your body armor, and there are no helmets.

Well, you grin, it's not like you need a helmet anyway. There's no hats, either, but who honestly assaults their own base wearing hats? Certainly not you, and it's not like you're definitively assaulting NERV-Nevada.

Explain the situation to Johann. We'll probably take the Jeep, but he'll need to park his plane somewhere if he wants to come with. Could probably find a safe place for it.

We'll ask for US Military credentials and clearance to get into NERVada, hopefully the Navy cooperates and the security there don't ask too many questions.

He's welcome to come along because he's more trustworthy than anyone we'd encounter there, probably. Also we need to get a 14-year-old girl and a giant death robot onto the navy carrier, avoid getting killed or sabotaged, and not die en route back to Japan. If he's still up for it, ask for second opinions or bright ideas.

Making your way up to Johann, you buckle the chest rig on and tighten the straps. You might need to exit the plane quickly with it.

“So when we land in San Diego, Johann, we'll park the plane on the naval base, and take the Jeep to CINCPAC's offices. From there he'll help Smith and I get into Nevada, while you stay with the plane. In case we need it.”

“Is good plan. How will you be coming out of Nevada?”

“Possibly fast, possibly hot and heavy.”

“I like coming in hot and heavy, Declan. Especially with under-mounted rocket pods on my wings.”

“I know you do, Johann. I know you do.” Patting him on the shoulder, you turn back to Smith, who's looking decidedly sick.

“You mean to tell me we might be having to shoot our own people?”

“Life's never clear cut, Smith. If shooting our people here in the States means we can get Unit-04 and the Fourth back to Japan, where they stand a chance of helping the First and Third.”

“But still, Special Agent, Section Two like us?”

“If you say so, sir.”

“Trust me, Smith. I've been doing crazy shit since I was sixteen.” He nods and swallows. You hand him his rifle and chest rig. “Be ready to go out the back in that Jeep. Just in case.”

He nods again, and you realize how young he is in comparison to you. He can't be more than twenty-three.

“You all right?” He nods again and gives you a brave smile, and you pat him on the shoulder.

“That's the spirit, lad. Chin up, stiff upper lip, meet death with a cup of tea, eh?”

Slipping back into the co-pilot's seat, you lean back and fall asleep, despite what nightmares that might be lurking. You learned to catch what sleep when you could, and lurking nightmares aren't going to stop you.
Instead of your mother or girlfriend, it's your father, Captain Alexander Cryan, as he appeared in a half-burnt photograph, Royal Air Force uniform, fighter's wings, brave smile. He's sitting at a table underneath a single lightbulb, swinging from the ceiling of the dark room you're both in.

“Have a seat, boy.” Swallowing back the emotions bubbling up, you do as the dream-apparition says, and sit across from him. He pours you a drink, and you knock it back.

“So,” he begins. “A nine year career in the Royal Army, and then you give it all up for being a mercenary. You're a coward and a drunk, Declan, and no son of mine.”

“So not only are you a coward and a drunk,” he glares at you, “you're a blasphemer against God.”

“You've been dead since 1991, old man. Don't fucking lecture me about God. While you were off faffing about the afterlife, Mam and I were struggling to survive. But no, can't blame the mighty Alexander Cryan for getting himself shot down over Kuwait, he's a hero!”

“You don't talk to your father that way, boy!”

“You're not my goddamned father,” you snarl. “You abandoned any pretense to that when you didn't come back from the Gulf and left Mam alone.”

He settles back in his seat and pours you another drink. You knock that one back, too, then throw the glass against the wall, where they both shatter.

“You're right. I'm not your goddamned father. I'm not even real. I'm a figment of your subconscious telling you what you want to know.”

“I figured. I'd like to wake up, now.”

He nods, and then your eyes are open, staring out of the glass of the C-130's cockpit.

“Welcome back to the land of the living, Cryan. We're approaching San Diego.”

“Land outside the city, Johann. Smith and I'll find the naval base on foot or in a vehicle. That Jeep's looking pretty good,” you grin at him slyly. He sighs, and shakes his head.

“We are beginning descent and approach. Try not to shoot anyone, please. It would not do to piss the Americans off. Their Patriot batteries are effective against planes, too.”

“Roger.” You unbuckle from the seat and head back to the cargo area, where Smith is just waking up himself. Nodding approvingly, you wait for the plane to touch down. When it does, with a gentle thump, you order Smith to open the rear ramp. It goes down, Smith climbs into the Jeep, and the C-130 begins rolling to a stop. You unhook the Jeep and it rolls gently out the back. You follow it out and climb into the rear seat, feeling for all the world like Monty or Patton.

“To the naval base, my boy,” you throw on your best English accent, “we've Americans to meet and greet!”

The Jeep rumbles to a start, and you unbuckle the chest rig. Don't want to look like you're assaulting the base, after all. You have Smith do the same at a STOP sign, and then the Jeep continues forward. Aside from military personnel and families, San Diego is largely empty, a result of Second Impact.

Poor bastards. When you get to the Naval Station, the sheer amount of warships the Americans keep around is staggering. It's like they're expecting World War Three to be entirely water-based. “We need to see your superior, son. Specifically your base commander.” You pull out your wallet and show him your identification, and the Marine nods quietly and telephones the watch officer, who in turn, you assume, is telephoning the base commander. Hopefully he's telephoning the Commander of the Pacific. Going straight to the top would be nice.

Eventually he motions you forward, with a “You'll be met by someone,” and Smith motors the Jeep along. Whistling Killaloe, the Royal Irish quick march, ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7RSUYjOSdM ) a Seaman in work clothes motions your vehicle onwards past the dock yards and ships to the barracks and offices. Smith manages to find the commander's office without getting lost, and you dismount the Jeep with the bearing appropriate to a NERV Special Agent. From the signage out front, you see you're going to be meeting with Admiral William Jackson, Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command.

Awww yes, exactly what you'd been hoping for. You stroll to the door, knock, and enter. The secretary refers you to a chair, and you begin waiting.

It's a wait. By your watch, it's at least an hour and a half before the secretary lets you into the Admiral's office. He doesn't stand to greet you.

“Sir, I'm going to be blunt here. I need to get into Nevada, so I can assume escort duties for getting the Fourth Child to Japan, and I need to talk to you about the transport arrangements for Unit-04.”

“We'll start with the transportation issue. According to my intel reports, the Eva was supposed to be flown across the ocean on one of those giant planes NERV was developing. What happened to that?”

“I'm not sure of the security of such an arrangement now, sir, due to recent developments.”

“Understandable. What were you thinking instead?”

“I was wondering if I could borrow a carrier group?” He stares at you. You stare back. It's dead silent for a moment, and then-

“HA! Good joke. Seriously, what were you thinking?”

“Carrier group, sir,” you insist. “Unrivaled security, and they're definitely hard to infiltrate.”

“I'll talk to my boss about that one,” he allows you, then motions for you to continue.

“I need to be able to get to Nevada without being pulled over and arrested for entering the country illegally.”

“I'll call the highway patrols of Nevada and California and let them know I've got a man coming through on a mission. They'll let the local police departments know.” You nod gratefully, and he stares at you for a moment.

“Do I know you?”

“No sir,” you insist. “Not at all.”

“I remember a man with your surname going down over Kuwait during the First Gulf,” he insists quietly.

“NOSIR,” you say loudly. “NO RELATION AT ALL.” He accepts your insistence, and then sighs.

“I'll take the military car, sir. Legitimacy will only help my mission.”

“Understandable. I'll have my secretary order you one from the motor pool.” You stand and shake Jackson's hand, before leaving his office. Thanking the secretary with a quick grin, you head back outside, to Smith.

“Take the Jeep back to Johann, I'll meet you at the plane, and we'll head for Nevada.” Smith accepts your orders with a sketched salute, then rumbles off in your lovely Jeep. Ah, what a wonderful piece of machinery.

You wait another ten minutes, and the secretary tries to flirt with you, but you ignore her in favor of fondling your rifle and waiting for the undoubtedly nondescript dark sedan the military favors. Your expectations regarding the car are true; it's a dark blue Ford Crown Victoria, driven by some enlisted flunky. A quick check for car bombs reveals nothing. You slide into the back, still feeling like a General or some shit, and give the man directions to Johann's C-130.

Like you ordered, Smith's there waiting for you. The driver stops when Smith waves him down, and he slides into the front.

“No bombs, then,” he asks cheerfully. You confirm as such, and he leans the seat back to take a nap.

“Onwards, then, mate, to Nevada!” The driver, also nondescript and quiet, does as ordered and sets off down the still being revitalized American Interstate system. Admiral Jackson was true to his word, and the police and highway patrols don't bother you, even when you urge the driver into speeding.

Eventually, NERV-Nevada rises out of the distance in the desert, and you wonder briefly if they know the US Navy's sent a car. Putting on your sunglasses, just in case, Section Two waves you through the front gate with no trouble at all. Americans must work closely with their NERV branches, then.

You and Smith exit the car in the motor pool and the driver turns around for his drive back, with a cheery wave. A Section Two agent escorts the two of you to a nondescript briefing room in one of the office buildings, and you both have a seat. Your wait is brief, before an elder statesman looking gentleman enters the room.

“Welcome to NERV-Nevada. I'm Commander Davis. You are...?”

“Special Agent Cryan and Agent Smith, sir. We're here to help protect the Fourth while the Evangelion is finished, and then take her to Japan. Rumors of our deaths have been greatly exaggerated, sir.”

He throws his head back and laughs, a deep, throaty one that puts you at ease. “Excellent! Excellent! We'll tell no one else, then, and I'll let you operate behind the scenes to find out what there is to be found out.”

“Sir, what brought me here so fast was the report of a bomb threat. Can you confirm that there was one?” At that, he looks startled for a moment.

“What? No, there was never anything of the sort. Our Section Two is highly competent, they're all former Special Forces, much like Tokyo-3's, at that.”

[]”That's startling, sir. Come along, Smith. We've business to attend to”

“Thank you, sir. Could I meet the Fourth, while my second here, Smith, sets up our rooms and catches up on his sleep?”

“Shouldn't be a problem,” the Commander booms. “Now, since you're supposed to be dead, we'll just keep this our little secret. I'll call Gendo from my daughter's cell phone and let him know not to send a replacement, pretend we're sending our own Section Two man with Mari.”

“Excellent, sir,” you tell him. Being a dead man is oddly refreshing, you realize. You're not accountable for your actions, and really, you could do probably anything you wanted, like rob a casino or shoot an Eva unit with a rocket launcher.

That last is a bad idea, though. You file the robbing a casino idea away, however, as that might could be useful. The Commander gives you a tour of NERV-Nevada, and you have to admit, it's quite impressive. The Eva unit is black and pink, an odd coloration, but then he tells you that they allowed the Fourth to pick her own colors. There's something off to the side that you can't quite make out under a tarp, but you dismiss it as unimportant. After all, if it wasn't, why would it be under a tarp?

The Fourth's living quarters are with the officer rooms, away from those of the enlisted personnel, and you wonder at that.

“Brits insisted on commissioning her in the Royal Air Force, for some odd reason. I think they said something about 'keeping up with those perfidious Germans'?”

“Odd, sir. The Japanese haven't commissioned either of their Children.”

“Well, despite we're making them fight a war, these Children deserve a chance at life. A salary and pension are a small attempt at making up for forcing them to give up their childhood.”

(1/2)
>>
“Quite so, sir. I'd much prefer to be driving one of the units myself, honestly. I'd have no compunctions taking the place of one of the Children.”

“Well,” he says when you stop outside a door. “Here we are, then.”

So let me get this straight.

Some infiltrating or corrupt assholes:
Get a mole next to Rei and almost kidnap her
Kill our boss, captain Thierry
Supposedly get "cleared out", then after that:
Shoot at us while we defend Rei
Have a firefight in front of Shinji
Get us transferred to Nevada on false pretenses
and try to blow us the fuck up with JC A BOMB.

What was the name of that IA asshole who moved up the schedule for getting our asses out here?

I kinda want to make a comment about how insulting it is that whoever the traitor(s) is(are), they are seriously half-assing their attempts to kill us.

Seriously, we're basically a foul-mouthed James Bond/Brit-Irish Rambo. And the last guy who tried to kill us basically admitted to such, lied about us needing to go to Nevada post-haste and then ASSUMED we would just get on the plane he provided.

This is AFTER he claimed the guy with no family had a non-existent daughter kidnapped. It's some seriously amateur hour bullshit here.

At some point we need to have a cathartic rant about how the badguys SERIOUSLY need to get their shit together.

>Knock on the door.

You knock on the door, and the Commander turns to leave. Bidding him a farewell, you wait for the Fourth to open her door. When she finally does, she's clad in t-shirt and panties. Averting your eyes to look elsewhere, you greet her.

“Ma'am. Special Agent Cryan. I'm to escort you to Japan in a week's time.” Her eyes widen behind the glasses, and she appears thoughtful.

“My uncle knew a Cryan. He said they met in the Eastern Ukraine when the Cryan parachuted in to get him out after his recon bird went down.” You swallow, and she continues. “Uncle said Cryan stood in a freezing river in December waiting for a Russian patrol to pass, so he could get to Uncle. “Yes,” you say slowly. “That was probably me. Standing in a freezing river sounds like a terrible idea, and I'm all about the terrible ideas.” You remember that. The river, the Russians, the separatists, the Ukrainians- all of them wanted Langley's head, and they definitely wanted your head. Sometimes you wake up, clutching a rifle that isn't there, unable to feel your legs because of the remembered cold, and you wonder why you did the things you did. And then you push it all back and hope they don't finally cart you to the loony bin.

“Ohmygod!” Mari emits a high pitched noise that almost instantly worsens your tinnitus, and grabs you in a hug. She appears to be doing her best to crush your ribs. Wincing slightly, you pat her head, and she pulls back, blushing. “S-sorry. It's just that Uncle always talked about the grim-faced SAS man coming out of a freezing river, steam rising from his body heat like some kind of demon and it was always SO COOL!”

“Right,” you say with a blank face. “Cool. It was definitely cool when I was hacking my lungs up for two weeks with pneumonia. I loved that shit, lemme tell you.”

“Really? Were the nurses cute? Did they inject you with rad new antibiotics?”

“No. I didn't love it at all. I was miserable the entire sodding time. Christ. What, you think it's all glamorous and shit?”

“Yes! You get to operate and go pewpewpewpew with your cool rifles and black kit!” Does she really think like this? Is she really looking at you with puppy dog eyes?

Are you saying we should waifu Asuka to cut her off from Shinji? Why the fuck would we do that?

Oh ok you're not Shinji.

Ok good. Try and be manlier than him, it shouldn't be too hard.

I'd sooner go for Mari than Asuka or Rei (not really up for clockblocking Shinji), that and if Decan's gonna dick a pilot, might as well go for the one that's the best lay.

We're Declan Cyran and we're trying to teach Shinji to man the fuck up. We're just some Section 2 who did stupid shit and is kind of a big deal.

“Hey, Mari. You wanna know my favorite part of being a trooper?” Her eyes go wide and she sidles closer to you, the better to hear your wisdom from the ages.

“It was seeing men I'd eaten with, fought next to, slept beside, knew as intimately as their wives, mothers, or girlfriends- be shot to pieces beside me, for no good reason at the time. It was handing folded flags to grieving spouses, childen, brothers, sisters, parents. It was asking a priest why and never getting a good answer. C'mon, Mari, I'm a good Northern Irish lad. God Save the King, let's go to church, all that, right?

It was hugging a six year old boy because his daddy's gone and he's never going to see him again.” At this point your voice is positively dripping sarcasm and self-loathing, and Mari's wilted back.

“It was showing up on some poor mother's doorstep, letter from the King in hand, to let her know her son had been killed doing something she couldn't know about someplace she couldn't know we were, for a reason she didn't know we had. It was shit, Mari. Pure and utter shit, and if you can avoid it, do so.”

“O-oh.”

“Oh indeed. Any more questions?”

“How old were you when you joined?” Jesus, she just doesn't give up.

Speaking of the underage issue, I couldn't find anything about the age of consent in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is where Tokyo-3 is supposed to be. If anyone wants to try to help, I'd appreciate it.

I think that the age of consent should be the same as Japan's. For both clarity reasons and that it's easier to find...

Maybe, unless someone finds out the age of consent in Kanagawa Prefecture.
>>
>>33326544
Federal is 13 but, apparently, city & prefectural laws have set it higher. Like 17/18 higher.

Considering the amount of humanity killed off a lowering of accepted age on some things wouldn't be too surprising.
>>
>>33326651
As long as it doesn't interfere with NERV's plans, I doubt it.
>>
>>33326672
That's what really gets me. In the United States, in 99% of federal versus state laws, Federal trumps. The Feds leave AoC up to the states. So does federal trump state in Japan?

>>

Dunno unless someone tries to make a federal case of it but, with the way the Japs are, there would probably be too much famiry shame and they'd just try to do whatever made it go away the fastest.

“I was fifteen-almost-sixteen when I strangled a man and then fucked off out of Ulster to join up. Look, do you want to know anything else about my life story or can I go do my job?” She shakes her head, and you turn and leave. That tarp was extremely interesting. A tarp in a hangar with no need for one?

Checking your pistol, you make your way back to the hangar, pretending for all the world like you belonged. Which you do. You are definitely NERV-Nevada Section Two and you absolutely belong. You are KING of this base and no one can stop you.

A fun fact about human nature is that if you're belligerent enough about being where you are, most people will back down. This worked in your favor, as after an initial attempt to halt your progress, the two Section One rent-a-cops you encountered backed down when confronted with your superior sunglasses and determination.

The tarp itself is interesting enough, in an abstract sort of way. Although there's nothing under it NOW, there's traces of red on the ground. Kneeling, you stick a finger in it and bring it up to your face. Sniffing doesn't reveal anything odd. It smells like concrete and a hint of blood?

You lick the little bit on your finger, and it does taste slightly like blood. Concerned, you see if you can find any traces of it leading away. You can't, which leads you to suspect they stuck it, whatever it was, on a truck.

The reason the federal law is so low is because it's not worth going through the legislation to change it when everyone has already set stricter standards. It's literally all down to not being worth the effort.

It's pretty much accepted fact that it's 18ish in Japan, everywhere.

Send Smith to watch Mari while we investigate.

We are NOT going to investigate this while she's unguarded. We're not taking any actions that leave her unguarded.

This is a possible security breach.

Security breaches are very deadly if there is a VVIP nearby. Hence it is in our best interest and that of our VVIP to make sure no foul play is afoot.

Like say, someone removed guards, stole their positions and had their bodies removed by truck.

I had no clue what the fuck was going on with that voting, heh.

With the handy power of your cellphone, you shoot a text to Smith ordering him to guard Mari, and a text to Commander Davis, asking for access to surveillance footage of the hanger. You're curious what they've got to say about you, so you head for a computer terminal, and using the false ID common to all agents, log in and pull up your personnel file. “Extremely dangerous... Best pointed in direction of enemy and let off leash...” Jesus, they make you sound like some kind of single-minded dog.

Shaking your head, you head back to Mari's room and meet Smith. Telling him what you know, suspect, and think, you direct him to finding something that 'tastes and smells of blood but was in the hangar'. Looking at you like you're a madman, he finally nods and buggers off, and you resume standing post outside the Fourth's door. The Commander complies with your request for the footage, and sends it to your phone.

Pulling it up, you're treated to a video of a group of techs using a crane to lift the tarp covered round object onto the back of a flat-bed truck. Someone tosses another tarp down on the spot where the object was, and then hops onto the back of the truck, which pulls away. Of the object, all you could catch was a glimpse of red.

You receive a text from Smith while you're trying to puzzle through the mystery of the red, round object- “Found the truck. Going in.”

we nees to ask her if she knows anyone who wants to kill her. Could give us a lead. Should also ask Mari how much she knows about unit04 and if anyone wants to sabotage it.

This commander calling with his daughter's phone somehow sets off some of my alarm bells.

I think we should place a separate call on our own, to make sure that the Sub-Commander over in Tokyo actually got the call.

Asking Mari about Sabotage doesn't seems like a great plan, since I'm not sure she thinks about people betraying her, wheras we are more paranoid than a veteran runner in a backstabbing contest at a Dragon convention.
