Sorry for the late start, had to help troubleshoot the cappuccino machine. this involved a soldering iron and a multitool, so I feel like it wasn't a waste of my time, even if I don't drink the stuff. haha!

And there's a pastebin character sheet/really short plot synopsis here

and... that's all i got.

“You sure about this?” Mav asks, eyeballing the drop off the side of the tower.

“Sure about what?” You return, gently testing the old wooden bench with a hand before sitting down. “Not like anyone's going to think we're doing anything lewd. They think I'm too dense.”

She snorts. “You are too dense, ya dink. But no, I meant your first agressor. You really want to fly against her first?”

You shrug. “What's it matter? I have to fly against her sometime, right?”

She shakes her head. “Kid ain't natural. Gives me the creeps when she's around.”

“Everybody says that about her, what the hell am I missing?” You ask, frustration mounting. “Seems like a normal witch to me, just quiet.”

“What was that about not being dense?” Mav says, chuckling. “She's not. You ever see her when she looks at someone? Feels like she's just figuring out how to kill you. Ain't any emotion in it, she's like a machine.”

1/2
>>
“And so I shouldn't fly against her..... why?” You ask. “I mean, maybe she is just a living robot, but what's that got to do with a single hop? Go up, give her a working over, come back, listen to the matrons hem and haw and make all kinds of learned noises about shit Ice is utterly convinced they have no clue on.”

Mav looks back at you. “You gettin' cocky all of a sudden?” She asks with a grin.

You shrug. “Well, you know. Hard not to.”

“Shit like that gets pilots killed, ya know.” She says. “And while I'd be fine since ya already left me all your stuff, I'd really rather not hear Ice and Katya and Slider cry their eyes out for the next year and a half, so I'd appreciate it if you got that shit in check, ya know?”

[] Combo answer (cos the votes are close enough and why not)

You nod, mentally reprimanding yourself- she's right, and you should know better. You hadn't had a problem with it up till after Berlin, and even since then, it hasn't been a problem for you. Only recently have you had an issue- as it happens, being told how good you are, even with the caveat that it's probably killing you, does tend to do amazing things for your ego.

Which, as Mav pointed out, is the kind of thing that gets pilots dead. You get cocky, get careless, and sooner or later someone or something you discounted is killing the hell out of you.

“Yeah, I guess you're right. I'll work on it.” You say, nodding again. “But I don't see- hey, wait.”

She looks back at you, a grin already tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“How did you know you got all my stuff?” You ask. “Shit, I'll have to re-write the will, leave everything to Rufus and Merlin.”

“You told me, remember?” She says, laughing. “Maybe you don't. We got piss drunk that one time, right before we went on our first cruise, both willed everything to each other.”

1/2
>>
“I... honestly didn't remember that.” You say, grimacing. “How drunk were we?”

“Well.....” She says, looking back out over the crenelated tower wall and towards the shore, a little ways off the island. “You'd gone through a bottle of Vodka and two of Rum, and we'd split a bottle of that moonshine granddad sent me.”

“The shit that's like, fruit flavored rocket fuel?” You ask.

She nods. “That's the stuff. Wish I still had some, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get any here.”

You snort. “Shit, we could probably make it, it can't be that hard.”

She shrugs. “Would it be worth the trouble if we got caught? Man, Ice would about eat the both of us alive.”

[x] That sounds lewd enough to risk it. You know where we can get the parts for a still?

“Ya know, that sounds lewd enough to risk it.” You say, and her head snaps back around, grinning.

“You mean...?” She asks.

You nod. “You know where we can get the parts for a still?”

“Well, hell yeah I do!” She responds, truning around and nodding. “Shit Frank, I thought after all that time you been spending around Ice all her nofun would rub off on ya. Maybe along with some other things that might be rubbin, ya know?”

You hold up a finger. “None of that, ma'am, none of that. I am a gentleman and an officer.”

She snorts. “Yeah, sure. One problem, though. Where can we set it up? Ain't too much abandoned space left on the island.”

“Well, there's a space under the derelict tower.” you say, thinking. “Down where I found all that old wine that's sitting in the squadron lounge.”

“No shit? There enough space down there?” She asks.

You nod. “Sure, as long as we keep it small. What about water? Can't brew with salt water.”

She grins. “You leave that to me. I got a fix for that.”

You look at her. “You better not be thinking what I think you're thinking.”

“What? The hot springs water would be fine!” She protests.

“Oh no. No no. I can imagine what goes on in there late at night. No.” You state, shaking your head. “I hope that wasn't your only idea.”

She grins. “I was joking anyway. Nah, water's easy. It'd turn out better if we had some spring or mountain water to work with, but we can just get some of the distilled stuff, no problem.”

1/2
>>
You nod. “Alright. So, under the derelict tower... what about sugar? And grain?”

She shrugs. “Put in an order for it, or put it on the list. Easy enough. Shit, I could do that too, it's not like I order anything anyway and they won't blink at sugar too much, not like they're having trouble with shipping.”

“And grain?” You ask.

She nods. “Yeah, I was thinking about that. There's probably plenty of wheat to go around, but I'm not so sure how to use that, I think grandpa uses corn, and someone's gonna ask questions if we start asking for forty pound bags of corn. We could probably go smaller, but it'd mean we're not able to make as much.”

“Well, if we're not here too long, it wouldn't matter if we wanted big bags of corn or not.” You point out. “That's only a problem if we're here for more than a month, say.”

She shrugs. “We could probably sneak a few bags in, yeah, or you could see about getting a squadron hack, we could go into town on a no fly day and get it ourselves.”

“Shit, I didn't even think of that.” You admit.

[] We'll order local wheat. Less chance of getting caught.
[] We'll go with smaller shipments of corn. I think it's worth the risk, and we can buy off some people if we need to.
[] We probably won't be here that much longer anyway, let's risk getting a couple big bags of corn.
[] I'll look into getting us a hack. We won't be able to brew as soon, but there's a lot less risk of getting caught.

You think for a second, then nod. “I'll look into getting us a hack. We coulda grabbed one from the boneyard up in the aleutians, I guess, but no way it'd have made it here with us. Do the brits have boneyards?”

She shakes her head. “Naw, not like we've got in the states. Matron Knight says the RAF stations sometimes have smaller scale yards, ya know, maybe twenty-thirty aircraft, but nothing like the the big boneyard in the deserts.”

“What about the civilian airports?” You ask. “I mean, we'd have to be able to get in and out of Barin, and this runway ain't the best.”

She shrugs. “You'd haveta look yourself, I don't know. But didn't they operate some big steelwings here during the war?”

You shake your head. “Biggest I've heard of is a widow that flew out of there. They aren't exactly the smallest birds in the history of ever, but they weren't huge, either.”

“Would one of those work?” Mav asks.

You nod. “For a hack? Yeah, it'd be fine. Pull out the magazines and there'd be some space in there for stuff, but at that point we might as well get a greyhound, and Ice could probably just as easy get one assigned. Besides,” You continue, “Warbirds like that are old and not always still in decent condition.”

“Well, I'll leave it to you. Next liberty you get, we can go looking.” She says. “Meantime, we can start getting set up downstairs. I'll start pulling the stuff to make a still togther, maybe Kitty will help.”

[] “Kitty?”

You raise an eyebrow. “Kitty?”

“Uh...” She pauses, then nods. “Yeah. Kitty. What, it's not like you didn't have pet names for your girlfriends!”

You laugh. “Yeah, but not kitty. And none of my exes are, ya know, shit hot leading NATO aces, either. She good in bed?”

“Officer and a lady.” Mav retorts, sticking out her tounge and crossing her arms. “I ain't tellin.”

“Spoilsport.” You grouse. “Not even a hint?”

She shakes her head. “Nope. Get bent, I ain't tellin you jack.”

“Hmph. I never get to have any fun.” You complain, trying not to laugh.

“Yeah, thats cos you're too busy playing dumb.” She responds. “I'm sure Ice would love to actually have, ya know. Fun.” She makes a gesture, making a ring with her finger and thumb, then running another finger in and out of it. “I bet she's kinky as hell, too. As hardassed as she is? Oh yeah.” She nods, then pauses.

“Or Slider. Or Katya. I mean, damn, son, you dumb. You could pick any of the three, and you pick... none?”

“What about all three?” You ask, grinning.

“Thats...” you pause. “That's actually kinda disturbing.”

Mav shrugs. “Hey, welcome to the twins. 'sjust how they work. Anyway, yeah. Good luck though, you'd probably need it.”

“How is it we always end up talking about women?” You ask.

Mav shrugs. “Cos the student-” She indicates you, “Will always seek advice from the master.” She points at herself, using the thumbs of both hands.

“Now who's being kinky?” You ask, grinning. “Isn't it chow time yet?” You look at your watch.

Mav shrugs. “We can head down if ya want, but it's probably too early. 'course, if chow isn't ready, we can always go check out that room you were telling me about, so I can get a look.”

[x] Yeah, let's head down and take a look, might as well.

Even as hungry as you are, the allure of a steady supply of hard liquor, even questionably made moonshine, is too much to pass up.

“Let's go down and check out where I'm thinking.” You say, sliding off the bench, noting it's dangerous creaking as Mav nods, walking over to the roof hatch and opening it. “We can see about chow afterwards, anyway.”

“Anything I'm going to want?” Mav asks. “Crowbar, gas mask...?”

You shake your head. “Flashlight and pants, maybe, but Konstantina was down there without pants, so it can't be that bad. Just wouldn't want you to get brickdust or dirt in your skivvies.”

She grimaces. “Me either. Yeah, lemme grab a pair out my room, I'll meet you at the stairwell, deal?”

You nod. “Yeah, deal. It'll give me time to grab a bag anyway, might as well see if there's more loot down there while we're out that way.”

It takes her a few minutes- apparently, you think, she either doesn't have a lot of pants, or the ones she has are buried somewhere. Soon enough, though, she shows up in a pair of baggy jeans, complete with a belt and a holstered pistol.

You indicate the pistol, noting the gerber tool right behind it. “What, you scared of monsters?”

“Ha-ha.” She says, shaking her head. “It was already on the belt. I probably wore them the last time I was at the ranch, just forgot to take it off.”

“How do you forget a fucking colt?” You ask, laughing. “I mean, damn, what is that? A thirty eight?”

She makes a scandalized squawk. “Fourty four, fuck you very much. Thirty eight, like I'd have some bullshit saturday night special.”

>>
“A real cowboy's gun, then?” You ask, testing your flashlight and shouldering your empty bag.

“Cowgirl, ya dink.”

“Oh, so you like being on top?”

“Frank, you know it's loaded, right?”

You laugh.

The corridor downstairs has been cleaned out some- the boxes of old paperwork are gone, and the floor looks like it's recently been swept. The tower basement looks cleaner, too, some of the rubble gone and a pair of new supports in place- steel I beams, each bolted to a plate at the ceiling and floor.

“Someone's been doing work down here.” Mav notes, and you nod.

“Yeah, it looks like it. What do you think?”

She shakes her head. “If they're putting in new steel supports, they're planning on renovations, I'll bet. How much exploring did you say you did down here?”

Up until that point PF had this subplot going on where we thought that the Witches killed or otherwise suppressed (at least thats how i took it anyway) any male magic users. Because it threatened their positions as yknow, dominant and powerful. It was a nice counterpoint to the waifu wars.
The basement scene ruined all of that subplot entirely. "Oh no there's nothing wrong with male users. We have all of this info on them and everything."
After that all 3 threads a night were devoted to NO YOUR WAIFU A SHIT!!!!! A-BLOO-BLOO!!!

PF also stopped writing in any tension or threats after that. The whole RAWKITS vs Fuel thing. He wrote in the Dread to give us something to blow up with the rawkits. Had we picked fuel he would have given us something to discover with it that was "important" And ill be honest im not in to /tg/ quests to waifu the fuck out of things. It was cute for a while, but it stopped being funny VERY fucking quickly.

>>33280128
It wasnt even that. They just flat out had, unaltered, record of how male magic had historical example. Hell we basically straight up did a few of those ourselves.
>>
>>33280014

Look i dont care about waifu shit as long as it doesnt consume a quest whole. Like here for instance. Sure we have the whole Ice, Slider, Katya thing, but we also have the subplots about our magic killing us slowly, Merlin being threatened by everything /tg/ freaks out about, and finally catching up with the bastard that shot us down over Alaska. These are more than suitable plot points that keep me reading to see their resolution. That is a good thing.

[x] Not a lot, just here and the tower above, really.

You shake your head, taking the time to look inside the wine room- the racks all stand completely empty. You wonder, briefly, who got the rest, but decide it doesn't matter, the stuff you pulled up is apparently worth it's weight in diamonds.

“Not a lot, honestly.” You say, shining your flashlight around, seeing clear evidence of more work- conduit being run, repairs to the stairs along the side you'd completely missed. “Just down here and the tower above.”

Mav nods. “Well, this place is out. Ain't no way we can set up here and someone not notice it. Didja check the other way, over by the old bomb shelter?”

You shake your head. “Nah, too worried I'd run into monsters.”

She looks at you like you're crazy, and you laugh.

“Kidding. Just didn't have the time, didn't care that much.” You say.

“Well, there's supposed to be a bunch of old rooms over the other way.” She says. “Stuff that hasn't really been opened since the mid forties. Maybe there's something over there we can use?”

You shrug. “Worth a shot, let's go.”

1/3 (sorry... got a bit carried away)
>>
The walk back the other way doesn't take long, though you note that a couple of the rooms along the hall are now blocked with contractor's plastic- the stuff they hang over doors to prevent dust from getting out. Looking up reveals florescent lights- not wired in, yet, but hung.

“Wonder what's with all the construction? And who's doing it?” You ask, looking around. “I mean, I haven't seen anyone, and I can't imagine the witches just use general contractors for this shit.”

Mav shrugs. “Ask Tabby. Think there's a construction crew hanging around out in the guest housing, on the north end, but they wouldn't be allowed into the castle proper, men usually aren't. Hell, mister mack's only here 'cos he's married to Georgette, and the ground crew has their own barracks down off the hangar.”

You frown. “Really? I thought they had rooms in here?”

She shakes her head. “Nope. Never have, either. The guest housing on the south side used to be technician housing, but they got moved inside in the seventies, right before they closed up the runway for steelwings.”

As you get closer to the bomb shelter, you start noticing faded signs, like the ones you used to see around town when you visited your grandparents, designating a fallout shelter. Shining your light over one of them, you note that the sign isn't that badly faded, and is, exactly as you guessed, a fallout shelter sign, displaying the radioactivity symbol over a black bar.

“Wow.” You say, pausing to look at it. “You don't see these too often.”

“The hell does that mean, anyway?” Mav asks.

2/3 ( i hope...)
>>
>>33280460

Finding the guy who shot us down over Alaska was a subplot? Since when?
>>
“Fallout shelter?” You ask, and she nods.

“Back in the late forties, and early part of the fifties, before marswatch and the UN really got going the way they did, the UNEDF's war plan if the martians invaded again was to nuke their landing sites.” You say, shaking your head. “The idea was that you'd send big bomber formations loaded with nukes, only one had to get through and boom. No more invaders. Or anything else.”

Mav nods. “And the shelters?”

“Well,” You say, shining your flashlight on it again. “They started to make these when people started realizing that groundbursts and low altitude airbursts kicked up radioactive debris, and it had to start coming back down eventually, and that it wouldn't be real good for anyone's health when it did. So they funded fallout shelters for cities and towns, so if you had to nuke invaders nearby, you could ride out the radiation in a shelter, then get back to living life. Of course, all that went out the window when marsnik and mariner happened and came back with solid proof that if anything was left down there, it wasn't a threat to us.”

3/4 (welp)
>>
>>33280527
I always though he was still alive and would be a suitable boss battle. But i could have remembered it wrong. Ill admit that.
>>
You look at the sign then down the hall, making out a door at the end. “Most of 'em were decommissioned and shut down, there's a couple still around in like, churches and shit, but really they're just there because they were part of the basement anyway.”

The door is jammed, though not nearly as badly as the wine room's was- though that's a good sign, you think, as you force it open. Inside the shelter, dust, undisturbed for decades, sits on the floor, along with signs of disuse- folded wall cots, stacks of cardboard boxes and wooden crates, metal wallshelves with a few small cases left on them, things of that nature. Two doors run along the right hand side, another pair along the left, and a single door in the back leads deeper into the shelter.

“Well,” Mav says, shining her flashlight over the doors. “Where should we start?”

The KGB was a very large organization. They had their own border troops, so having their own spy frigates to subhunt off the Motherland isn't too out of the ordinary.

Hell, the thing showed up in Red Storm Rising. The three US subs launched their attack on Kola practically right in front of it.

the nuke sub that was 'scuttled' a couple hundred kms from Hawaii that was dredged up by the CIA and the Global Experorer (IIRC that was the ships name) was a really interesting and terrifying event

the KGB managed to get some party loyal spetznaz on board as replacement crewmen, tried to take control of the sub and launch nukes on Hawaii, but they failed to properly countermand the security and failsafes on the missiles so the warheads det charges went off when they tried to launch

nope

the GSF Explorer (formerly Glomar Explorer) and its tale is real, although a bunch of conspiracies have been based off it
>>
>>33281104
No, I know the Glomar Explorer is real. I was saying the theory that the Soviet sub had gone "rogue" and tried to nuke Hawaii was a conspiracy theory
>>
>>33280977
That's just a pipe dream. There's no way we can ever find out what happened on that sub. All we know is where it sank.
>>
>>33281131
they managed to recover enough from the sub and an intact R-21 as well as wreckage from the one that detonated that they pieced together what happened, they found enough of the codebooks and comm relays and personal effects in the 2/3rds of the sub they brought up to piece together that the 6 'replacement' crew members tried something and the R-21's failsafes activated from a failed override launch.

>>33281157
they pulled 2/3rds of it from the bottom of the ocean, they got plenty from it
>>
>>33281188
Do you have any credible sources or citations to back that up?
>>
>>33281188
Or someone could have fucked up a test launch, or Glorious Soviet Engineering could've done what it did best and failed. Also, the official story was that they only got the first 1/3rd of the boat, but that's whatever
>>
>>33281188
derp, they managed to recover 1/3rd, they lost the other 2/3rds when they had a mechanical failure with the grab arm

[x] Right side first, we'll just work our way around.

You shine your light around before settling on the right hand doors. “Let's check these out.” You say, motioning with your head.

Mav nods, and you notice when you look back at her, she's got the retaining strap for her pistol unbuttoned. You grin. “Scared of monsters?”

“What? No.” She says flatly, noticing your gaze and reattaching the ends. “I must have just forgotten.”

“Uh-huh. Sure.” you say, opening the first door on the right.

Inside, you see a chow hall- one about the size of the main room you were just in, long tables with chairs stacked neatly on top lining the floors, casting weird shadows along the wall. The entire interior, you've noticed, is covered in white tile, even the walls the the barrel roof. The left side wall is open, with a serving counter revealing a kitchen just beyond.

“Man, that must have been a bitch to put up.” You remark, looking at the tile. The ones on the floor are noticeably larger, but it's still an awful lot of tile.

“You know, this room seems a lot bigger than they'd need.” Mav points out. “There weren't that many bunks in the other room, and this looks like it'd serve everyone in the castle right now, all at once.”

You nod- she's right. “Probably means there's more racks in the back or one of the other rooms.” you say, shining your light through to the kitchen. “'Cos the doors along the back back there are probably cold lockers, maybe a dry pantry.”

“Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, do we even want to go in there?” She asks.

[] Yeah, might as well, and if there's a pantry or something, it might make a pretty good place to hide the still.

[x] Yeah, might as well, and if there's a pantry or something, it might make a pretty good place to hide the still.

You nod, turning around and heading back towards the door. “Yeah, might as well. One of those pantries might make a good hiding place.” You say, and mav nods.

“I wonder how long they could have lived down here?” She says, looking around. “I mean, you couldn't stay forever, right?”

You nod. “Depends on when it was built, and if they kept it modernized or not.” You say. “Early on, radiation wasn't really all that well understood, and people thought it would clear out in a couple of days, so, what? Maybe a week, assuming they were paranoid and built in some oops time.”

“And later?” Mav asks.

“Well, later on, in the mid fifties, we were starting to get that there's some shit that hangs around a lot longer. If that's when it was built... who knows? Months? Years? Some of the latest ones could house their occupants for a hundred years, maybe more.” You say.

“hey, how do you know all this anyway?” she asks, suddenly. “You some kinda expert, ain't been telling us?”

You shake your head, opening the door to the kitchen. “Naw, I just studied it some in school. Took a lot of history courses, they helped keep my GPA up. You'd be surprised how fucked up the military was post-war.”

“I can only imagine.” Mav says, somewhat dryly.

What happen to that quest?

Dunno, just stopped
>>
The kitchen is set up to handle larger meals- you note a large, flat grill, like you'd see in a restaurant kitchen, as well as a pair of large ovens and a deep, tub sink in back. Turning on the faucet experimentally, you're rewarded with a stream of brown water, almost black, and a distinct metallic smell.

“Well, can't use that.” Mav says, looking at the water under her light. “bet that's been sitting for years.”

You nod, leaving the water on. “Yeah, but if that's from a pipe, it may be connected to the purifier, or have one of it's own.” You say. “Could solve the water problem.”

Mav shrugs. “Do you think they'd have built a separate one for that? Bet it's like on some of the smaller ships, where they tank the drinking water.”

You nod, noting that it's not clearing at all. “Yeah, probably.” You say, shutting it off. “Well, let's check the cold locker, then.”

The door hangs slightly ajar, held that way by a block of wood. Inside, it's as dusty as the rest of the shelter, the shelves along the walls and down the center empty. “Nada.” You say, looking around, though the tile in here is a green-blue. “There's a drain in the center, though.”

Mav nods. “Might not be a bad idea. Only problem is we're going to need cold water pretty constantly.”

“It won't actually go into the drink, right?” You ask.

She nods. “Yeah, it's just for the warm barrel, you need something to cool down the alcohol steam.”

“What about the faucet then?” You ask. “I mean, it's cold, just not potable.”

She hesitates, then nods. “Yeah, that should work. We'd have to rig up a hose or something, but it should work.”

“Alright, well, let's check the pantry then.” You say. “Might as well, since we're down here.”

2/3 (haha nope)
>>
>>33282600
>hahaha intensifies
>>
She nods. “Lead on.”

The pantry contains a few small items- a couple boxes of baking soda, long since hardened into solid bricks, and a few boxes here and there, and a crate of C rations that are, most likely, so far past their date they're worthless, though maybe a hard core collector would be interested.

Mav looks around, sighing. “Looks like they cleaned the place out pretty good.” She says, kind of glumly. “I was kinda hoping we'd find something neat, like you did last time.”

[] Looks like they did, kind of sucks. We found a good spot for the still, though, so there's that.
