Periodic Table of Dragons #7

1d4chan page: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Periodic_Table_of_Dragons

Previous threads are at suptg with the "periodic table" tag

Almost all the dragons are described now! If you want to write one you'd better get in here!

Added bits to both Lanthanum and Cerium dragons, anyone think whether or not they're better now?

Lanthanum dragons, despite their soft scales and lack of a breath weapon, are nonetheless highly valued by others.
Silver white and bearing large wings, the appearance of Lanthanum dragons is standard for a dragon, except for their eyes which are unusually large and appear to be spectacle lenses, translucent and completely lacking features such as whites, irises, or pupils.
Lanthanum dragons have among the best vision of all dragons, capable of distinguishing an individual's facial features from miles away. When added to their ability to fly and produce incredibly bright light, they are in frequent demand as sentries and scouts. Their scales are also highly valued as components for vision related spells such as scrying, as well as ingredients for telescope and spectacle lenses.
As a result of their superb vision and relative lack of combat abilities, they will generally avoid any confrontation, and will flee from hostile beings from miles away. In addition, most of them have learned how to lipread, and due to their superb vision, are very capable of telling whether or not approaching beings are hostile. Nevertheless, they are capable of producing light bright enough to cause permanent blindness, and are still formidable opponents to most non-dragons.
>>
While many dragons are known for having some ability with either fire, electricity, or magnetism, Cerium dragons are notable for having skill with all three.
Cerium dragons are silvery dragons, with unusually variegated scales that are much darker on the dips, while being highly reflective on the ridges. Their teeth are much darker and harder than the rest of them, and produce sparks every time they strike together. When angered, they have been known to grind their teeth together, producing large amounts of sparks.
Though Cerium dragons lack a breath weapon and possess soft scales, they are far from defenseless. Due to the fact that striking them causes the area hit to produce gouts of flame, melee attacks are a poor choice. Furthermore, they are capable of producing and controlling electricity, fire, and and magnetism, although not to the degree of more specialized dragons. Nevertheless, they are formidable opponents due the sheer variety of their attacks.
Cerium dragons are notable for being much more prone to boredom than most other dragons, and will vary their pursuits every few years, generally to new pursuits related to one of their natural abilities, although some have been known to range far from their natural abilities, leading to them having highly diverse skillsets.

Should there be a colorwheel of dragons?
>>
>>33274136
Uh... it's called the Periodic Table.
>>
>>33274172

No no I mean like...

okay the Periodic Table of dragons was obviously made in reference to the metallic dragons in D&D.

The Chromatic dragons comparatively should have a similar deal except theirs is like, a color wheel.
>>
>>33274225
actually it was more like, "Ok, so there's Fire, water, air and earth dragons... what if we make real-life elements into dragons?"
>>
>>33274225
Colored dragons have never been a part of this. It was always intended to be Periodic Dragons.
>>
I'm now imagining an evil king trying to take eggs from a Helium dragon so he can eat them.

He's just like "YES! I HAVE FOUND THE DRAGONS NEST!"

He then rides into town carrying what appears to be a bunch of balloons.
>>
Ok, so my religion ideas are as follows:

Elves worship gods of non-periodic elements and magics. Each tribe/city of elves worship different gods more than the others based upon what magics they have specialized and where they live. These gods names are in the runic alphabet and are considered to be the "true names" of such gods. In this sense the gods names are base runes that could be mistaken for a simple or even complex spell. However, there is a prefix and/or a suffix attached that makes the rune non-functional. To those not affiliated with the religion it is considered a waste of runic potential. To those of the religion it is what makes them the essence of the gods themselves through which they perform their holy deeds and will eventually return to the world.

So for example there could be gods concerning sound, light, electricity, radiant energy, water, fire, ice, earth, void, life, death, and magic itself. So for example an elf group near a volcano would likely worship fire and earth over the others.

Dwarves on the other hand would be in two divisions. The undersea dwarves would worship the gods of innovation, invention, and machinery. The ground dwarves on the other hand would worship metals, especially those that they mine. There would be a small fraction that forms cults based on the worship of a type of dragon, but these would be few and far between.

Kobolds would be similar to the earthen dwarves, but they would be split amongst that and the belief of the progenitor dragon due to their close relationship with Cobalt dragons.
>>
>>33274501

Orcs with their affinity for philosophy would worship the great philosophers of old. So each tribe would worship one or two of those great philosophers. So their analogues of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, et al, would be worshiped. New philosophers would be akin to prophets or messiahs.

Halflings due to the way they live and their affinity with the environment itself would worship gods pertaining to biomes, with the one they live in being the most important.

Finally humans would either have a menagerie of the others based on their proximity to them. Other humans would most likely worship variations of a monotheistic sort of religion.
>>
>>33274520
Someone in a previous thread suggested monsters that feed on faith, and prey on orcs.
Maybe we can cast them as "spirits", and have them pose as pseudo-gods or spirits, ruling over shamanic orcs. But to break the cliché a bit, those orcs would be like the jaffas in stargate, instead of "muh noble savage".
>>
>>33274414
draw it
write it
I don't care, I have to see this
>>
>>33274649
but everyone hates the jaffas, the idea was to make orcs fun instead of 'GRAGH RAPE PILLAGE KILL'
>>
>>33274649
Just a precision: shamanic orcs would be an exception, rare, "infected" tribes that normal philosopher orcs try to cure by killing the faith predators.
>>
>>33274687
Better idea
>>
>>33274757
I never intended to replace the philosopher orcs, those are totally awesome.
I just wanted to expand on an idea from a previous thread, and at the same time take a jab at the "muh noble savage" trope.
Those also could provide some quest ideas if someone ever run a game in this setting.
>>
>>33274848
ahh... I seem to be misunderstanding a lot lately.... I need to sleep more
>>
One thing to note is that the belief eaters are called protean because I figured they might adopt forms based upon what belief they were eating.
So one eating belief in a fire god would be wreathed in flames.
Also, to prevent religious debates, i figured they aren't affected by whether or not the belief is true, the y just eat belief in general.
>>
>>33274966
This world is getting better all the time
>>
>>33274687
I'll agree to this idea if they are very rare, most times being squashed when a shaman type orc is young.

>>33274966
I do like this a lot.
>>
>>33274966
Don't tell players that there are no definite gods in this setting

I've seen mention of Fluorine dragons a few times, has no one written them up yet?

As much as I can tell they are: arctic-dwelling fluid dragons, extremely dangerous and aggressive, use corrosion attacks and are disliked and feared by other dragons.

I'd suggest that they are yellow and have nice teeth.
>>
>>33280863
I thought about writing it once, but I've been hesitant to try due to the high expectations of such a dragon.
>>
>>33280863

Someone did write up Florine Dragons; IIRC they never touched the ground and always stayed in the air, lived surrounded by a fluorine cloud. They were constantly regenerating and dissolving. I think the writer had a concept that they'd have violent mood swings but nonetheless be constantly desiring some sort of social contact with other dragons.

I liked that because it differentiated them from the Chlorine dragons.
>>
>>33280965
yep, I feel the same way. The good teeth idea is kind of funny... if I do end up writing it I might use that.

>>33280863
It's really really hard to overstate how dangerous pure fluorine is. it's an acid that turns everything it touches to more acids and poisons
>>
>>33281159
I remember that one... it was so sparse that I kept hoping that they'd flesh it out

I think it's in thread 2, and that's saved
>>
>>33281177

You could put Florine dragons into the category of nearly mythological because they only live high in the atmosphere. The only ones who known anything about them at all are the Helium dragons, because they're the only ones that share the habitat and aren't killed on contact. If Florines descend into the lower atmosphere their wings dissolve in the moisture.

Hmmm... There's a concept; 20 odd tons of elemental fluorine coming down at terminal velocity. You'd just have a blasted toxic hell out of nowhere at all.
>>
>>33281343
they're already mentioned in the fluff about saint giles, though...

hmm... I'm too tired tonight, spent a lot of the day stacking wood, but I think I might give it a shot.
>>
Original drawfag here, I've been having a hellish time at work but I have been reading the threads also at work. When I quit working overtime I will do some more pictures
>>
>>33281232
we should copy it to the article then, and wait for somebody to flesh it out further or do it yourself
>>
Besides writing dragons, what should we flesh out more right now?
>>
>>33282119
The arctic race, and also halflings.
>>
>>33282506
I guess I'll do soem dragons and halfling ideas tomorrow/
>>
>>33274414
More like, he picks up the egg, and then his hands freeze to it through his armor. As the superfluid helium coating creeps up his skin and into his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, he hears what few ever shall hear.

The second sound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_sound

Flickering ripples of heat, so tenuous in the sea of cold. Jumping from incredible cold to slightly less so, ever so slightly.

He should not be able to sense this, and yet, with the dragon's egg in his hands, something makes it so, and he hears the cry of the Helium dragon to its young.

The first thing all Helium mothers do, when they have finished cementing the egg to the ground, is set up a very special pattern of second sound, sloshing through the thin layer of superfluid around every egg. The child inside hears this every minute of every day. It is by this means that they know their parents, how they are educated about the outside world, and how they know what to do when they hatch. They sing back to their parents, too, modulating the ripples instinctively, and this is how the parent meets their child, before it is ever born.
>>
>>33281417
Guy who wrote Saint Gilles here, I intentionally left Gilles' treatment at the hands of the Fluorines vague for this exact reason, because the dragon hadn't been described at that time.
>>
>>33285240
Marvelous! And then he breaks free, perhaps at the cost of his arm, manage to go back to civilization, and put the knowledge he picked up o good use?
We have some potential for epicness there.
>>
>>33282119
The arctic race
>>
>>33285240
this is actually incredibly sweet
>>
I've been thinking, a lot of rare earth elements are all found in the same minerals, should there be some kind of RE valley or region (or regions) where they congregate?
>>
>>33290850
I think that sounds reasonable if its a spread out region so that there isn't a really high density of dragons so it would be explorable. Or on the flip side it could be smaller area with a high density, and as a direct result the area is almost completely unexplored where nothing goes in and nothing comes out. Either way I think that the promethium dragons would be exiled due to them being radiants.
>>
>>33287690
No, I think he dies as a statue of supercooled human flesh. One does not venture into a Helium's freezer without great preparation.
>>
>>33291292
or maybe both... two or three regions in the world that are irradiated death valleys and then a few country-sized areas where they're just a bit more common than other places
>>
coming up with a glossary, so we don't get confused with language. Quote and add words you think of

Glossary:
Tarnish: any oxidation that changes the color of the scales, analogous to dead skin cells on a human. Having untarnished scales is a sign of health and fitness in a dragon, with a few exceptions such as Coppers and Neodymiums.
Patina: desirable tarnish, such as what happens with older Copper dragons
Rust: an infection caused by runaway oxidation, can progress to the point of gangrene.
Super-alloy or superalloy: an alloy which possesses extreme strength, temperature resistance and oxidation resistance.
>>
Ytterbium dragons, which look nothing like Yttrium dragons despite the similarity in spelling, are a bright silver similar to freshly polished Silver scale, with a white tarnish powder which they take great pains to remove. A Ytterbium dragon with any white on its scales is greatly weakened, perhaps even one of the Inflicted. Ytterbiums are one of the few dragons that become less dangerous when Inflicted, since they are unable to use their scale powder.

Ytterbiums have a vivid green flame that comes close to a Magnesium's in intensity. In fact, some say that though it is not as bright, it is even hotter. It is not their flame that their opponent should fear, however. The head and tail of a Ytterbium are covered in scales that are perhaps unique among dragonkind. Each scale is sharply curved, giving them an appearance that looks much like hematite. Under these scales is a powder that causes intense stinging upon contact with the skin or eyes. The scales can also be flared in a desperate measure, releasing all the powder at once, after which the dragon will ignite it with their flame. Few beings can survive this, as the air instantly becomes hot enough to melt glass. Some Ytterbiums have been known to selectively flare the scales above their mouth, giving their breath additional intensity for short periods.

If using electrical runes against one, it should be done early. The more strain they are under, the higher their resistance to electricity becomes. One that is nearly exhausted has been known to shrug off even a Silver's breath. In fact, if they know they will face a dragon with electric breath, a Ytterbium will sometimes pick a fight with a dragon they know they can beat, then deliberately fight poorly in order to gain this resistance.

For unknown reasons, Cesium dragons value Ytterbium scales for crafting sundials above all other materials and will do anything to get one.

I assume Fluorine-Chlorine hybrids would be massive rape machines. and can travel in space
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorine_trifluoride
>>
ok, my IP has been blocked from 1d4 for some reason, something about being an open proxy or something. the block seems to be indefinite.

fuck

could someone email/post on the discussion page of wikifag about it? I can't
>>
>>33295973
We've already discussed this. Because gases form so many more novel, well known compounds than metals, there's far too much complication to be had when allowing gaseous-gaseous hybrids, or gaseous-metal hybrids.
>>
>>33296142
well, we don't have to have a description for every single hybrid, just the one that are interesting.

all i want is my exploding space dragon
>>
>>33296114
or assistantwikifag, since they seem to do a lot more blocking/unblocking
>>
>>33296183
It's a question of consistency. It's better to restrict the combinations, rather than selectively pick and choose, because then people get mad if their personal favorite isnt included, and if the rules aren't consistent, things looks messy and arbitrary.
>>
>>33291690
>>33291292
>>33295973
Anyone? Please? I can't do anything with 1d4chan until this block is removed and I can't change my IP
>>
>>33296183
As much as I love chlorine-tetrafluoride and FOOF (dioxygen-difluoride) I have to agree with >>33296418 for sanity's sake.
Also so hydrogen, carbon and oxygen don't go around doing all sorts of crazy shit.

This being said, for Fluorine dragons I'd like there to be a note about a Uranium dragon fighting and beating a Fluorine - the biggest application of free Fluorine is Uranium enrichment - making it much, much more deadly
>>
>>33297904
>be a note about a Uranium dragon fighting and beating a Fluorine - the biggest application of free Fluorine is Uranium enrichment - making it much, much more deadly
noted. I think I will try to tackle the fluorine

Cool.
I was considering giving it a shot when I asked after your panic bump, but I was using my phone and hadn't read much background.
Now that I have I think I'm just happier letting the established setting creators do it, and just watching. Also I'm kinda lazy.

Uranium and similar nuke-breath dragons better look like Godzilla. There will be hell to pay otherwise.

don't let that stop you. I just read the wikipedia page on it and tried to make something that included everything I found interesting about the element

is anyone working on an element? I read something about Erbium earlier.

No, I don't want it, I just want to know if there's anyone who's actually working on this or if it's just the three of us with nicks
>>

Godzilla is the bastard lovechild of a plutonium and a cobalt.
>>
one last bump before bed, I'm giving F my best shot
>>
>>33302364
Good luck to you sir.
>>
>>33295231
Looks good, especially the fuel air explosive.
The electrical resistance is also neat.

Actually, on a related note, since metals get tougher when stressed via work-hardening, do dragons get tougher as well as stronger from exercise?
>>
>>33302507
I would think so. That doesn't just apply to metals, biological creatures get stronger from exercise, so I don't see why a metal dragon wouldn't.
>>
>>33302607
Ah, I think you misunderstand.
I already figured they got stronger, I wanted to know if they also got tougher.
>>
>>33302783
You mean like hardened scales? I think that would depend on the dragon species. For example gold probably wouldn't but iron would.
>>
>>33303202
Thanks. Also, new dragon, cause this element had really neat properties.

While many of the Rare Earth dragons have magnetic abilities, Gadolinium dragons are the only ones who are so drastically affected by being exposed to magnetism.

Gadolinium dragons are notable for lacking a membrane between the bones of their vestigial wings, with the bones capable of moving independently and tipped in needles that inject venom. This venom only affects Radiant dragons and mortal races, but is exceedingly effective on both. For Radiant dragons, it temporarily suppresses their ability to generate Radiant energy. For the mortal races, it causes rapid development of scar tissue throughout the body, causing chronic pain, and death in more severe cases as organs are rendered inoperable by excessive scar tissue.

Unlike many related Rare Earth Dragons, Gadolinium dragons do not tarnish in dry air, although they are still susceptible to tarnish in moist air. Material from Gadolinium dragons are better at protection from the effects of radiant dragons than even Boron, but Gadolinium dragons are significantly dangerous and harder to kill, and the improvement is not sufficient to be considered worth the danger.
>>
While Gadolinium dragons possess magnetic skills of average strength, they have one unusual quality relating to magnetism. When Gadolinium dragons are exposed to a magnetic field, they increase in temperature, with the increase scaling with the power of the magnetic field they are introduced to. Because of this, Gadolinium dragons have been known to turn their magnetic abilities on themselves to superheat their bodies for added damage. Furthermore, once no longer exposed to the magnetic field, they cool down by the same amount they were heated. Since they usually lose heat in the meantime, this means they become colder than when they started.

Gadolinium dragons are unusually social towards other species of dragons, and prefer to ally with dragons with magnetic abilities. They are especially dangerous when allied with Neodymium dragons, who can superheat them to tremendous degrees.
